Lenovo T420 random freeze and shutdown

Q: Lenovo T420 random freeze and shutdown

Hi have had this problem with the laptop since i got it. Have tried updating all drivers and the system bios, which has seemed to reduce the frequency of the freeze and shutdown, and searched for solutions on the net but I seem to be going round in circles. Please assist me in finding out what the problem is and how i could fix it. I have attached the necessary files.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Your most recent .dmp files were from October. Make sure you have your system enabled for generating dump files. Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD OPTION TWO part 2. will configure them properly. Also, avoid using any disk cleaning software (CCleaner, Windows Disk Cleanup, etc.) after a crash occurs.

Hello, I've owned this Lenovo T420 for 8+ months. I have been receiving random BSODs monthly, starting a couple months back, before then, I dont remember having them ever. More recently it has become weekly. Some days there is more than one. Today I've had 6. A couple of them occurred randomly just browsing on Chrome. Twice after I was connected remotely to a clients VM software. Then a couple times just booting up.

Currently I am connected to another client via RDP, browsing, and haven't had any issues for past hour.

I've ran the dm logger tool instructions and am attaching zip to this thread.

The only virus scanner I use is malwarebytes free and don't have any active ones. I've disabled windows updates because I've had issues with them in the past on this laptop.

Thank you,

Scott

Hi Daimyo21,

Welcome to the 7forums

If you have only Malwarebytes as protection, please install Microsoft Security Essentials
The software from Malwarebytes is NO Anti-Virus program and is not meant to run single on a system as AV.

Please install all updates from Windows Update available and check Lenovo for BIOS updates.

Have you tried to update the BIOS yet?  If not, that would be a good place to start.  You can also try pulling the battery out while having the laptop plugged in and see if you get the same results.  If so please let us know.

My B50-70 doesnt shut down entirely after a period of time. The screen is dark but I can hear the fan and the green power button is still alight. I have to manually shut it down. I already turned off fast-boot option in windows 10. Already checked any problems with drivers and all are uptodate. Already tried the refresh option in windows 10. Didn't fix the problem And there is anothe freeze when I lock it down (energy-saving state) for a period of time and it just freezes. None of the buttons or touchpad are working and the display is dark. I only can shut it down and restart. And according to my lenovo status on my laptop it only has a warranty until june although I bought it new in december. It says it was activated in june 2015. Who can I contact with to solve this problem ? Specs: Windows 10 x64 , I3-4030U,4GB RAM, HD-4400,500GB HDD. With best regards,TheOneAli

Hi TheOneAli ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Did the machine came with Windows 10 when you purchased it back in December ?
How was it if you run diagnostics .

For now what you can try are steps here to fully shutdown windows 10 aside from fast start up and see if that would help.

Regards to the warranty lookup , if this is a mismatch then have your receipt scanned for manual update with the tech guys.  Click here to the support site for Lenovo contact number for your model.  You may also have them check further for recommended steps specially if the above steps failed.

Hope this answered your query, update us as it goes.

Hi I've been experiencing very frequent freezes then shutdown without BSOD. The mouse and running applications just freeze, and if I have audio on, the sound will crash into noise, then a few seconds later, the PC shuts down.
I thought it maybe overheating but I put a large fan directly on the mobo, and the temp is around 50-60
the components are rather recent, well at least the computer shop replaced most components recently, but I don't know how long they've been sitting on the shelf
only the hard drive is older.

it can happen 4-5 times a day, or I can go a day or 2 without it happening. I usually leave the PC on all the time.

You might want to check if something any of the hardware components are overheating too much. For monitoring the heat/celsius of the system, use Speccy or HWinfo:Speccy - System Information - Free Download

I bought Lenovo Y50 - i7, 16 gigs of ram, 256 GB SSD, GTX 860mSince then its been randomly shutting down with a noisy pop sound. It has happened 3 times already, once every week. When its about to shutdown i can still see the game (occured only when gaming) running for 5 seconds but i cant move the character nor the keyboard works, and then pop, its shut down.... I can then start the PC again without no problem... This is really frustrating also seeing other users having this problem, if Lenovo will not respond, i might just return the laptop and buy another one. I updated BIOS yesterday so I shall see what happens... PLEASE RESPOND!!!

I have a Lenovo Z510 laptop which turns off randomly while plugged in. It started intially only while playing games but then happened even while watching videos and browsing. Each time the interval got shorter and in the last stage it turned off the moment I inserted the charger pin. This never happens when its on battery so it not a overheating issue. I tried changing the charging adapter but it did not go away so I figured charger is not the problem. Then as a final solution got my Motherboard replaced and it went away but only for a month. Now even with a new mother board it randomly turns off while watching a video. Im really perplexed as to what could be the reason of such shutdowns. I really need to figure it out so it can replaced under warranty.

Hi vinayk23 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

There was a BIOS update for power issue on this model .
I would not however advise you to do it on your own since it may need constant ac connection and we do not want shutdowns to happen during the BIOS update as it may brick the pc .

I would rather have you call in tech support for assistance and back up your important files first for safe keep.

I had been trying to speed up my computer and read articles and forums on removing start up items. Everything went good, no issues.  Computer still starting up slow and taking it's sweet time on processing tasks.  Random issues with WIFI connectivity. Telling me WIFI drive not connected, printer not connected....etc.  Just got new NETGEAR Nighthawk x4 smart wifi router model R7500 and the NetGear Genie....my wifi is not the problem. Strong signal in all rooms and even outside house, but computer randomly not connected. Then yesterday, random shut-downs when I am not near my computer?  I walked away for a few hours, had open QuickBooks, internet explorer search, OpenOffice and email.  When I came back everything was shut down and programs had errors, so something is forcing a shutdown.  Backup says drive is not connected and it backed up to the desktop.  Not sure where to begin trying to figure out what is making the computer shutdown. Right now I am planning the precaution of making sure I close items before walking away from computer.  I usually just put it to sleep and then come back and pick up where I left off. I make sure to shut down at least once a week for a back up on Fridays, which is when I scheduled it.  Thanks for your help

Dear all,
I'm looking for some help to understand the possible causes of the BSOD that I've met randomly while using my new Lenovo Thinkpad T430 - 2349-PHG.
The BSOD is not the only problem I'm having. While using the Laptop, sometimes the screen starts to shake, then the laptop shuts down without showing the BSOD. Sometimes, the BSOD appears. Each time I've to restore the Loptop to a previous point in order to make it work.
I've tried to run memory test using memtest86+-5.01, after 10 hours work and 9 runs, there was no errors.
I've tried to use driver?s verifier, however, when I set it up to work, the BSOD appears.
Attached is the recommended ZIP file to analyze the problem, only two dmp files are available.
I hope that I get some help regarding this matter soon.
Thank you in advance for your time and help.

My laptop LCD has been out for awhile and I've been using with an external monitor, but I decided to fix the LCD so I ordered a new LCD screen for it. The lcd screen arrives, install it and picture still doesn't show up. I then thought maybe I just had a bad cable from motherboard to LCD so I replaced that.. still no luck.

I can see a faint image in the background, but it's very dark. Same with my original screen.

What's odd is before my original laptop would show a just scrambled picture of black and white-- which is why I originally thought it was LCD.

What would the next step be? To order a inverter? Do the symptoms above sound like it's a bad inverter?

Hi all,
really hope you can help here, its driving me crazy.
I have a lenovo E320 laptop. which is a really great machine except for one small problem.
since christmas it has developed a tendency to randomly (i havent been able to corelate the behaviour with anything from temp to usage to angle of screen to physical location) freeze the system, the display shows the frozen image with an overlay of dynamic pixelation.

this can occur when playing a graphics intensive game, or while idling on the desktop, while running on an external monitor (both screens effected), during booting, or even while running diagnostic tests pre boot.
I've tried new drivers, i've tried old drivers. i've tried a clean boot. the GPU (and therefore system board) has been replaced and still no luck.

a re-image is on the cards for when i have the required stuff (pendrive with the bootdisc on) but this stinks of a hardware issue.

Memory passes all tests, and it really LOOKS like a GPU problem. but that has been replaced to no help.
Updating drivers and bios seems to have HELPED, but the system still crashes every now and again (better then the "every few mintues" of yesterday)

any suggestions?
Couple of example screenshots:

A:Lenovo E320 with "random" graphics freeze with dynamic pixelation.

Shand, I find solution for you.
This causes Overheating or updating BIOS if you update bios then cause BIOS stop working

Then make sure:
Don't replace GPU and other Laptop Components.
Don't overclock or use dangerous PC jobs.
Don't touching Laptop components and not removing Keyboard.
Run Full system scan with Malwarebytes www.malwarebytes.org or other any malware removal software.

Lenovo T420, Type 4177-CTO. Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit.  8 GB RAM,  500 GB HD, third party 128 GB SSD added. After inspecting many laptops I chose the ThinkPad T420. The only better laptop was Apple and I needed different software. An important consideration for any computer is support. Lenovo has excellent support at 1-800-426-7378. Tech support and repair happens right here in the United States.  Repairs are done in Tennessee. The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is a solid laptop. It is not as light as some laptops but strength and durability need to be considered. Weight of machine with a large 6 cell battery and a slice battery = 6 lb. 7 oz. (3060 kg). The laptop weighs 5 lb. 5 oz. (2430 kg) with just the large 6 cell battery. The 6 cell battery weighs 1 lb. 1.5 oz. (500kg) and the 6 cell battery would then weigh 1/3 less. You can compute the difference. Keep in mind my battery life with the slice battery installed is about 17 hours. The slice battery also places the laptop on a slight angle with the rear elevated. It is about the same tilt as with the docking station. You cannot have the slice battery installed while the laptop in in the docking station. The 6 cell battery sticks out the back so it is not a perfect cosmetic fit. The 4 cell battery will look nicer, be lighter and probably last about 4 hours. The overall design is perfect in my opinion. I find no problems. Hi I am new to this community, so I would like to applogise if I mist a simillar subject (I did check some but non resolved my problem). I have a thinkpad t420, I bought a used one. It worked great, and I bought it from a friend, that I trust. I installed a ssd drive, was usnig Linux, and everything worked for one month. But then I bought a HDD caddy, and replaced the CD rom. After that my thinkpad worked for a day (although it didnt recognize the second HDD). The next day I tried searching BIOS for some settings, and after restarting my laptop it was stuck on Lenovo splash screen, rebooting in a loop. I tried:- removing and replacing the caddy with the CD rom,- replacing my SSD drive,- replacing RAM (both slots),- reseting BIOS,- running a diagnostic CD (but it will not boot, neither can I boot from an USB) My google search showed that it could bi a problem with one of the USB pins inside of one of the ports (short circuit or something like that), but I could not finde any damage. So I am thinkig that the motherboard could be damaged, but I can access BIOS, but that is the only thing I can do with it. I would be wery thenkful for any advice or help, before I go to an official Lenovo service for help. Hi Zjaz123456,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with not booting to OS on your ThinkPad T420.
Is both HDD &SSD detecting in BIOS?

Check with removing CMOS battery, make sure you have disconnected the system from AC adapter and battery is removed.

Remove both the drive & battery from the system, disconnect the power adapter. Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 sec perform this step for 2 to 3 times and then connect only the drive which is having OS installed in it. Use only power adapter to switch ON the system.

Hope this helps. Do post us back for further assistance!

Best regards,

For updating my T420 in Lenovo support website, I installed the Lenovo Service Bridge. However, my security software detected it as a malware and deleted some files. Then every time the laptop starts, there will be a couple of pop-up windows (see lingks below), which is the same when I click the service bridge installation file. Hi guys, I just spilled a glass of water on m Lenovo T420 laptop. I immediately turned it off and kept it upside down for a while and haven't turned it on for 8 hours now. Is there something I should do to avoid damage? E.g. how long should I wait and  should I do something to dry it more? Help appreciated! Thanks,Joel

A:Water spillage on Lenovo T420 keyboard

Hi Lenoovoo,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I would rather that you remove the battery and take it to a service center for general cleaning informing them of the immediate concern about the water spill. Do not attempt to power it on as tools may be needed to safely dry it up internally avoiding other issues.
How to Locate a Repair Center or Service Provider

If you have such skill and tools then you can use the hardware manual here a reference guide.

Hope this help answer your query.

Regards

The free upgrade to win 10 pro failed several times.  I checked the web for problems and as a result uninstalled malwarebytes, antivirus, some drivers and some Lenovo stuff that popped up.  Finally the upgrade using the Media tool was successful.  Win 10 pro is now working on the T420.  However, only the Lenovo Companion is installed.  I bought a Yoga with Win10 pro and it came with Lenovo Companion, Settings and Account.  I have been trying to find a way on the Lenovo site to download the Settings and Account programs, but no luck.  Any suggestions?  (Probably a simple solution and I am just missing something obvious....)

Hello, I rescently bought a lenovo t420 from a vendor thats not lenovo. It was find for a while, but then it got a malware virus. i did a removal of the malware. I then powered it on again but it displayed the thinkpad logo and the next screen was just black with a blinking underscore in the corner. I downloaded a diagnostic program to a usb and ran it. This is what the log says-> http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/P8H5BrGqmc/ Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community!

Actually, it's not a blacklist, but a whitelist.Anyway, I suggest flashing this modified BIOS version: https://www.sendspace.com/file/0whb9r

In addition to the removed whitelist, it has several other advantages over the original BIOS.

Dear Community, a friend of mine has a problem. He upgraded the Laptop to Windows 10 for about 6 months ago. His Webcam is not found. There is no Imaging Device in the Device Manager and there is also no "Unknown Device" in it. The Driver for integrated Camera from lenovo site did not help. I used the Forum search but the entries did not help either. Anyone knows a solution? Greetings from Germany

I just purchased an adapter plug that allows me to connect my Lenovo/IBM thinkpad (T420) to my HDTV by plugging the HDMI cord into my TV and the other end to this adapter plug which converts the HDMI cable into a male plug which fits into my display port (there is no HDMI port on this model computer). It worked, but now I can't remove the adapter plug...it's stuck in the laptop display port. I do not know if the problem is caused by the male adapter plug or the female jack in the computer, but they're locked together now.

I have previously read review comments (on these HDMI/display port adapter plugs) mentioning this jamming happening on more than a couple occasions, but I don't recall any resolutions being mentioned except to break off (and destroy) the plug and possibly damage the display port as well. I called Lenovo tech support but they said I'd have to mail the computer to them to get it fixed. I'd prefer avoiding that if possible even though my warranty is still in effect and it would be of no cost to me.....just time lost without a computer.

I'd greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who may be aware of how to resolve this problem (and also how to avoid it happening again) without doing damage to either the plug or especially the computer display port.

Thanks for your consideration in any case....

My pc was running well and I decided to reinstall windows but this time I have problem...I have windows 10 and my laptop is Lenovo Thinkpad T420  My power plan minimum and maximum processor state are both set to 100% and for some reason i can't change them, they are like stuck to 100%. Even when I try to restore my settings to default the maximum and minumum processor state will still remain at 100%. I want to change my minimum processor state to 5% and maximum to 80%. I did it everytime after reinstalling windows and this time it just don't work. My laptop is overheating a lot while I'm playing games or just watching videos. I already tried to reinstall windows for one more time and first thing I did was changing maximum processor state in power options but it didn't let me type other number except 100%.  To be more clear what is my problem, here is recording of it: Please help, much appreciate, Thank You!

Heya,

So my computer started freezing randomly, getting BSOD randomly, and after rebooting, the screen wouldn't receive any signals a while back and I had just put my computer away but decided to look into it a bit more and to get a better idea of whether it could be a problem with software or hardware. Uploaded the zip as requested, the perfmon file is in the rar as well. About to restart so that windows can install updates has computer hasn't been on for a little while, figured I should post this here before I restart incase I can't get my computer back to here. Also added dxdiag report for system information etc.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit is the original OS installed and still using it, full retail, OS installed when computer was built, never re-installed.
Bought everything for this computer on the same day, 04/01/2011, so roughly 18 months old. System specs are as follows;
Case: Thermaltake V5 Black Edition.
Motherboard: Asus M4A89GTD Pro/USB3.
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 2.8 GHz Processor.
RAM: 4GB DDR3 1600 CL8.
Hard Drive: 1 TB Western Digital Sata / 64Mb Cache.
Video Card: Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5.
Power Supply: Cooler Master 650w.
Monitor: Viewsonic 19" LED.
Mouse: Logitech MX518 Optical Gaming Mouse.
Keyboard: Razer Arctosa.
Headset: Creative Fatality Gaming Headset.

If you need any more information, just let me know, I can use the internet on my phone if my computer doesn't work. Really appreciate any and all help, thanks very much.

The other day, I installed Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista. Since about 2 days after I did, applications have started freezing randomly. I'm not sure it's the SP that's doing this to me though, cause it was a few days after I installed it and not right away. In Task Manager, there are less processes, which is weird. I could be doing anything and the application will freeze out of nowhere and I have to restart my computer to fix it. It's a hassle because sometimes I'm in the middle of something and it does this to me. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anybody know if there is a fix for it?

A:Random applications freeze at random times

This can be caused by a host of different things.

Here's what I would do first:

1. Scan for viruses or any type of malware.
2. Update all of my drivers for my network card, video card, sound card.
3. Uninstall any programs I either don't need or don't recognize in Add/Remove programs

Hi

I've got a bit of an issue with shutting down a PC. Basically when I come to shutdown the PC ('Start' > 'Shut Down'), after pressing the shut down button the PC hangs, and after 3-5 minutes regains itself and then goes to the shutdown options menu ('Shut Down', 'Log Off' etc).

The programs freeze too, however the PC itself is fine, as in the CPU and memory usage are average! Task manager works and responds fine.

Any Ideas?

Cheers
Jonna
