I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows XP acting wonky. Text buttons missing, test in IE flashes or is missing, not a valid win32 application

Okay, this is a tough one I believe. Am fairly knowledgeable but there are always tricks and tips.

Have had same PC for quite a while. No hardware has been changed, no software has been added. Lojack is running on PC and has been for a while. Will ask vendor about this.
Windows XP Home, 3gb Ram, 2.4ghx Dual Core E6600 CPU with great cooling, paging file is system managed, also tried custom size, 3 partitions, single boot to XP, one user, 100gb free.
I have not changed my use or habits on this machine. I see no pattern.
Have all patches from MSFT

Problem: A few times a week while surfing in IE with a few windows open as always, I will get text on a web page that disappears. If I move my mouse it will appear. Closing down IE and restarting does not help issue. Using Firefox does not help issue. Closing all windows and restarting IE does not help.
If I then click on Word, Excel, Event Viewer, Task Manager or other program I will get an error: Not a valid Win32 application. Or I might get: Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. Or I will get: Insufficient System Resources exist to complete the requested service.
Very strange indeed.

If I reboot all is fine and worked again.

You could try uninstalling your video card drivers and reinstalling, download them from the manufacturers web site or have the CD handy.

I see that video card is a PCI-E (so I assume it's a plug-in card, not built into the mobo). You could remove it, clean the contacts and re-insert.

While you have it out, clean the fan.

Running the latest edition of Spybot and have run into a problem of portions of certain buttons missing. On the dialog that pops up asking for my approval/disapproval, the box with "Remember" check-box and "Allow"/"Disallow" buttons, the buttons that are labeled "Allow" or "Disallow are each half missing. The bottom half or just ove half is missing, preventing one from reading the labels on them.

This isn't such a big problem for me; but, it is for anyone not familiar enough to know which button does what.

I have downloaded the latest version of the program several times and installed it on over a dozen machines over a period of a few weeks and I haven't seen any different result.

Is anyone else having this problem?

OK, this is very strange. The buttons for search and run are missing when you click the start button and the little screen pops up. Usually, they are right beside "log off"on the bottom of the little pop up screen when you click start...but they are missing now.

I right clicked on start, but could not find an option to put these two buttons back on there where they were.

Can someone give me a step by step on how to do this...I am sure something might be unchecked. (though HOW it got that way I do not know, they were working fine)

It is only a small problem, I know, but I do not want to have to reformat my computer just to get a couple of buttons back on there...LOL!

So can someone help me get these two buttons back on there? I use search a lot and that is why I ask. Otherwise it would be no problem.

anyway ... here goes .........................

i run a desktop running windows xp with firefox and d/l books onto my kindle without any problem. so far, so good.

i also run a laptop running windows 8, firefox and TRY to d/l books but 2 buttons don't show up on the amazon screen, namely "Buy now with 1-Click" and "Add to wish list" until late yesterday because i couldn't see any 'download' button.

i only found out when i had both computers showing the same screen and only then did it became clear.
so, at the moment, when i pass the cursor over the particular area and click, the download starts. that's fine but it's not right.

so ... my question is this ... how can i get these two buttons to become visible in the amazon screen on the windows 8 laptop?

Mysteriously enough I am having the same trouble

I have done all the obvious
- restarted
- create and tried another profile/log on (the problem isnt happening there)
- searched the MS Knowledge base
- Browsed the MS Newsgroups which led me to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm where I tried #240 and http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks2.htm#util - fixes - restore task bar to default setting
- I started in Safe Mode (problem still exists) and swapped to a different user still in safe mode (problem does not occur)

If I close the "Quick Launch Bar" (and dont have any other of the taskbar toolbars active) - I dont have a taskbar/start bar

In the Taskbar properties Keep the taskbar... and Group similar... are on/checked

Any suggestions? While this isnt disabling, its pretty annoying

I can't seem to see some buttons on various webpages. I am currently using IE8 and I seem to have the same problem in Firefox, so I think it might be a computer setting. Some basic display property settings are 32-bit, 96 DPI and I'm using the "windows default" in colors for internet options. I can only tell the buttons are there when hovering my house over them and the "hand" appears. I have to circle the page to see when the hand changes and sometimes I don't know what the button is for. I've tried resetting defaults and noticed a thread from 2008 discussing the same topic. I tried those solutions and still not working. Any help would be GREAT!

I have a Gateway computer running Windows XP with IE 7.0 browser. (Problem existed with IE 6.0, also). My kids would occasionally tell me that my webpages were missing "stuff" or looked different from theirs. I did not really miss anything until I tried the new Yahoo! Mail Beta. It looks and works great on their computers - a Gateway laptop and a home-built computer - both running through a wireless router and same IE 7.0 browser. On my computer, I cannot drag and drop, when I click on an item, it is not highlighted, there are no reply or forwarded arrows next to the messages which I have replied to or forwarded and at the top of the page, my options of "send", "reply", "forward", "delete", etc., are just plain black text on a white background. On the other computers in the house, these options are enclosed in tabs with tan shading. There are probably other differences also but these are the ones I really notice. I have contacted Yahoo through e-mail. They seem to think, and rightly so, that the problem is somewhere in my computer. Either something is installed or not installed or some box is checked and should not be or is not checked and should be. I have sent them a screenshot. I have done all the things they suggested: made sure I had the latest version of Java and enabled it. I temporarily turned off my Windows firewall. I did not disable my McAfee antivirus program. There is nothing wrong with your logs. They are fine.See if this works for you......

1.) Go to your /WINDOWS/Resources/Themes directory, or wherever you may have your themes located.

2.) Go into the directory of the theme your currently using.
Example: Using 'Semplice' by KoL? Navigate to /WINDOWS/Resources/Themes/Semplice

3.) Go into the folder called 'Shell" within the previous directory.

4.) Inside you'll find a folder with a file called 'shellstyle.dll' inside. Now remember the name of the theme your using? (Example: Semplice). You need to rename this folder from Shell to the name of the theme your currently using. If you don't know the exact name, go to Display Properties, and try to Display/Show the theme, the name you see in Display Properties is the name you need to change the 'Shell' folder to.
Example: Using Semplice as an example, the Shell folder for that theme is called 'Shell', in this situation you'll need to rename the folder to 'Semplice'. Easy enough, right?
Note that for multi-part themes, aka themes with more than one variation or color, you'll need to rename each corresponding 'Shell' folder to what is displayed in Display Properties when you try to apply the theme.

5.) Now that you've changed the 'Shell' folder name to correspond with the visual styles name, reapply the theme.

6.) Go to Add/Remove Programs and see if there has been a change..

This is a strange one! My son's computer cannot open certain web pages. It started out shortly after he loaded SP2 but not right away. First thing that is strange is the passport sign in button on the MSN.com web page does not appear. It shows a red X and some text identifying the link but the button is missing. When you click on it it tries to open the web page but stalls and times out with the Cannot Find Server error page.
I then did a full reload of XP pro SP2 and thought that would get rid of it but it didn't. Same missing button.
Loaded Firefox. Same thing but instead of the error page it gives a error box saying data is empty.
We all connect to the internet through a gateway computer which shares a dialup modem. The gateway has PC-cillen for the virus scan and firewall.
I could easily access these web sites from my computer but now it is starting to stall as well and today I could not connect to any Microsoft web pages like their support pages or the passport sign it. We both can open most web pages like yahoo, earthlink, etc. but others we cannot. Is there some setting in the firewall that maybe was updated lately? Is there a virus locking us out of Microsoft so we won't be able to get updates?

Please help!!!!! I'm so confused!!!!!

Please note, I just copied my post from a diff forum. Also Read the last REG entry, i just put that in too. (Below the //EDIT\\)

I'm having a few problems with this, hopefully, this doesn't turn out to be some stupid mistake I caused.

Well, For firsts, i installed window blinds, to check out themes and stuff. I installed one and didn't like it and changed my theme back to Windows XP Style. This is where my problem starts. I'm kind of picky and the Windows Classic look, not so right for me. So i go to Desktop>Properties>Themes>Windows XP. Next thing, its still all Windows Classic Style. So I go into Window blinds and pick the Windows XP theme, still doesn't work.

Methods I've tried.
1. Services Manager
2. Download the Luna theme (That's what the default XP theme is called) and replace it with the old Luna.theme file. Still doesnt work
3. downloaded a whole new "Resources" folder .ZIP file (C:\WINDOWS\RESOURCES\ is where themes are located.) and replaced it, STILL doesn't work.
4. Added a file to registry with following info...

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

And it is not only display properties, anything that uses the same draw tecniques no longer draw. And even stranger, it is this way even in safemode. Any ideas? - Use restore point to where the problem did not occur. (still occurs)
- Update and rollback NVIDIA.
- Boot in safe mode (problem still occurs).
- Update windows 7.
- Just restarting my machine.

At this point I don't know what else I can attempt to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I've had an intermittent problem since the end of 2009 when Google Earth did not display the glove in 3D, just a yellow outline of the continents. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling several times and downloaded the plugin. Now it will open, but in Options everything is greyed out. Things are getting worse.

Also, recently got the popup "Your computer is infected", etc.; I've seen that one before. I don't buy it. (No pun intended). Seems to be masquerading as a MSFT Windows program.

My registry scanning program now opens with the main screen in black and white, minus the radio buttons. It still works as usual, the progress bar shows nothing. No Minimize or Close (X) button. All web pages in IE and Firefox open minus background colors and images; Web mail, etc., and in Chrome and Opera, web pages are fine. Except in Chrome, the thumbnails of visited sites are not showing on the home page.

No download progress bars on anything.

I don't mean to be rude, but it seems you're doing quite a lot of things that aren't good for your computer.

At TSG we do not recommend Registry scanners of any description, as they cause far more problems than they even promise to resolve, and even those promises aren't met.
You should only ever use one antivirus program at a time as they can interfere with each other and leave you less well protected than before.
You should keep your programs, and especially your Web Browser, as up to date as possible. If you don't even use IE you certainly have nothing to lose by bringing it up to version 8 which is the current version.

If you would submit a hijackthis log somebody may be able to pinpoint your problem, especially if it's malware, but it is equally possible that it's just the cumulative effect of so many other problems.

I have no idea where this actually belongs - maybe IE10 - but since some problems seem to show up in various apps, I'm trying here.
First, in IE10.
In a number of web pages (e.g., accuweather), a number of images are missing. Weather for a particular day used to have a background picture - now, just text. Buttons are missing. For example, when I try to buy something or Continue to next page, the buy/continue button is missing. Well, not really, I've found I can tab within the page until a blank space on the screen is highlighted and then I can hit enter. But VISUALLY, it's not there. Some web pages are almost entirely balck and white although on my Vista laptop, they have many images. I'll add, these same buttons/images are missing in Firefox. That's one reason I think it's a W8 problem. I've tried clearing cache/cookies in IE and FF. No help.

In every open app, in the upper right, are three icons - minimize/restore/close. These appear in every app but the location (I'll call it that) is inconsistent. That is, in Vista and all previous iterations, I could hold my mouse over the minimize icon and click - never moving my mouse - thus, minimizing all apps. Not in W8. If I place my mouse over 'minimize' and click, I may minimize the next1-2 apps. For the next app, the mouse may be to the left of minimize or it may be over the 'restore' button even though I've not moved the mouse. I have to hit Minimize, wait to see where the mouse is in the next open app, and mov... Read more

So I have done some research on how to fix the problem of having no 'Remove/Modify' button from the Add and Remove programs list. I read that going into regedit and going through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
\<Program Name>
and changing the vales of NoModify and NoRemove on the program to 0 will possibly fix my problem
My PROBLEM is that in this folder in Uninstall there is no 'NoModify' or 'NoRemove' to change values with... anyone got idea's where or what to do to fix this

Windows XP SP3 installed
Newish Machine bought refurb'd hardly anything on it (could have some virus' but i havent gotten to the scanning part only 512 ram.. takes a while )

Let me know!

!!! also... the one program i could remove was ZoneAlarm... i removed it because i would rather use AVG... but yeah thats all i have to add -_-

I run Windows XP Home, with three users on the same machine. I am the only user with this problem: The task bar does not show windows programs which are open on my machine, even though they appear when I do Alt+tab. I have run msinfo32 and OTMS.exe is definitely not running in the background. I have deleted the reg key

and rebooted without success. I have not found anybody else on the net with the same problem. Adaware 6 doesn't find anything either.

Would appreciate some help!

Why is Miscrosoft paid so much for bad software that needs an army of geeks working around the clock to repair? Maybe they should be sued in a class action for selling defective goods.

Hi Guys! You've all been so helpful so far with a couple of problems i've had in the past, but this one could prove a lot harder to sort out!

I'm running windows XP home with SP2, keep it completely updated and run ad-aware Se (New one), Norton, AVG as well as Spybot S&D, but recently something really wierd's happened.

All of the Internet explorer style buttons at the top of folder windows have dissappeared! Completely vanished without a trace. Instead, I just have a silver title bar across the top, with the Minimise, close and maximise buttons, and the name of the program. Anything underneath, (Such as an address bar, view, file etc buttons and navigational buttons) have gone!

I still have them in Internet explorer, before anyone asks.. But it's most annoying, particularly when i get lost in a folder tree and can't back up without using the backspace key!

Please Please Please help!

Thanks, Tij.

After becoming infected with Antivirus Soft, I removed it without trouble using malwarebytes. Now buttons on different programs are missing the last letter. At first, I thought it was just a problem with malwarebytes. Then, since I got Antivirus Soft because of an outdated version of Adobe Reader, I downloaded and installed the newest version. This is after I had removed Antivirus Soft.Surprisingly, the cancel button was missing a letter too. Those are the only two programs so far I've noticed having the problem, but it's only been happening for about 5 minutes, so I assume there are other programs having the problem as well. Also, as you can see in the pictures, it doesn't affect all the buttons. What worries me is it happened to a program I downloaded after I removed Antivirus Soft. Did malwarebytes miss one of the files?

Try reverting back to Normal GUI without any themes and see if the issue still remains. If you what you said was true you would see that the Next on the Adobe installer would be missing the T or the >

I was working in Publisher 2002, when I realized that a lot of my normal text box control buttons were not in place. I checked the add buttons arrows at the end of the tool bar (one on the top and one on down the left side), but could not find them. [Font, Font Size, Bold, Italic, Underline, Justification boxes, Line sizes, Line Types, etc] I eventually found them under Tools/Customize and dragged them back to the tool bar, so they will work sort of, they just are not where I am used to finding them. And I do not know what made them disappear in the first place. But what I can not find, and don't know where to look is the page indicator boxes that were down bottom left on the screen. They let you click between pages. Now those boxes are gone and I see no arrows or other way to control what page I am on. The 'help' feature does not seem to address this problem of the disappearing buttons and boxes that is in any way applicable to the problem. Did I unknowingly hit a control of some sort that reconfigured the entire tool bar? Is there a reset default that will put it back properly?

What you experienced is many times the result of using a Registry Cleaner. Everything probably still exists but it might be easier just to reinstall only Publisher from the Office Disc.

I'm working on a computer with multiple issues, but one of them is that no Change, Remove, or Repair buttons are showing up in Add or Remove Programs. I've found several other posts started in other websites' forums that depict the same problem, but the best anyone can seem to do is provide a workaround. Is there actually a way to fix this problem, or is my best bet to reformat?

Good evening from Wisconsin,

I have a client using Print Shop Deluxe 21 on Windows XP. On Monday she expressed concerns that certain buttons did not appear in the Print Shop Deluxe user interface anymore. I am not a Print Shop Deluxe user so I'm not sure what the missing buttons look like, but what she tells me is that there are supposed to be some back/next buttons to the right of the light bulb and newspaper icons, and there are supposed to be some buttons down by the "For help, press F1" message.

I have made a screenshot available at http://www.riverfallsumc.org/images/3580fcb.jpg .

Other than "I'm missing buttons", I don't have much to work with. Does anyone here know what she's missing, and how to get them back?

I upgraded from Vista Home Premium 32bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit today. The install went smoothly (I've installed/upgraded many OS's times in my days), but I'm having a weird issue. Since I've upgraded my laptop, no taskbar buttons appear for open windows - I have to rely on Alt+Tab to navigate. I'm not new to Windows 7, so I'm well aware of the newbie issue of adjusting to the "super" taskbar, and have tried every trick I know. Searching endlessly, I have not come across the exact same issue, and am driving myself crazy.

For reference, I've tried the following:
- Switching to/from combine, don't combine, combine when full on properties
- Restoring to before updates
- Booting off disc and repairing - no issues found
- Checking registry for correct values

I've included a screen grab (desktop.png) to show what I'm seeing. As you can see, I can pin programs - but they don't expand into a window button when opened, hence the Alt+Tab switching. Any insight would be awesome. Thanks.

In addition, my Vista was a fresh install of only about 1 month - original HDD went south.

EDIT: More information - another thing I've tried...
I used to use Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! for XP, and it fixed problems in the past. Since it's made for XP, I passed-over trying it. However, I tried it this morning, and it had some progress.

In the program I chose "Minimized programs are missing" and it semi-fixed it - not really. Basically, once it restarts the... Read more

Welcome to Seven Forums :hello: This is a weird one I have to admit. What if u right-click the desktop and choose a different theme. Could u try, say, Windows Classic and see if that makes a difference. Also could u try locking and unlocking the taskbar and see if that makes a difference. Strange one. Hope others come along with suggestions.

Hello, here's my problem as best I can describe it. When I click on the start memu, the shutdown, restart, and sleep buttons are gone. However, there is a lock down button. I have tried placing the button there by going to control panel, searching power, power options, and changing the settings so shutdown should appear (but it does not).

Also I found a posting for running gpedit.msc, but cannot find it. I have since learned that gpedit.msc is unavailable for my home edition version of vista.

What I would like to know is how to put the shutdown/restart/sleep button back into the start menu. Thank you.

A:Shutdown/Restart/Sleep Buttons Missing

Try this and see if it works
1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor.
2. In the left pane, click on User Configuration, Administrative Templates, and Start Menu and Taskbar.
3. In the right pane, right click on Remove and prevent access to the Shutdown, Restart,Sleep, and Hibernate commands and click on Properties.
4. To Show Shutdown Options -
A) Select (dot) Disabled or Not Configured and click on OK.
O Pari!!
