I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Critical Error: Start menu and Cortana aren't working.....Sign out now"

Just some of additional details I can remember after Windows 10 Upgrade.
It looks so good at first, the environment...so cool... Until after 1 day,
1) I cannot play my music using "Windows Media Player"
2) I cannot "PRINT". Printer in my devices was gone. I re-installed it (Brother DCP-J100). And then it appeared in the devices as two copies: One with "Copy(1)" at the end. I tried to print, I cannot print. All were in "queued" all the time.
3) I transferred photos from my mobile phone to laptop via Bluetooth, all were "NOT SENT". I found out: I need to right click on the Bluetooth icon and then press "Receive a file". Ops, before this it is automatic.....
4) My greatest DISASTER: Above-mentioned: CRITICAL ERROR: Start menu and Cortana aren't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in. Sign out now. Seemed like I don't have another choice but to sign out. But I have signed in and out already more than 10 times, when will it be fixed??? I cannot use my laptop well. Just to reach you out here in forum am using my mobile phone to take photo of the screen and patiently typing....I tried to click my "Mozilla browser in the Desktop" it doesn't function. I's forced to use "IE" instead and I don't like it and my time is limited coz anytime now while typing it can crushed....

PLEASE HELP ME ON THIS...if this cannot be solved, please give me instruction on how can I rather go back to Windows 8.1...THANK YOU GUYZ in advance....

P.S. I can only touch folders in the desktop...to open the internet I have to find a file with .html and right click on it and "open through internet explorer" that's why i was able to type long statements here now,,,other than that - nothing

A:Critical Error: Start Menu and Cortana aren't working

hi Hohshua,

Can you try to install all available Windows Updates to get the latest patch and bug fixes for the OS then reboot and observe.

If that doesn't fix it then, try these steps:
1. On an elevated command prompt, paste the following:

bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

When finished, restart the machine then continuously tap F8 then boot into Safe Mode.
  - Link to image

If the error message doesn't appear in Safe Mode, check if you got a free antivirus like Avast and completely uninstall it as it's reported to cause the issue as discussed in this article then restart Windows normally and observe

2. Run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth on the command prompt to repair your Windows image (this may take a while).

Alternatively, ify ou have a Win10 ISO, you can follow this guide (see Step 6) to use the ISO instead to cleanup the image.

3. If the above steps doesn't work then you may want to consider backing up all of your important files and do a Refresh or Reset and observe.

Let me know how it goes.

Hello people,

Hope you can help me to solve this problem!

Since I upgraded my computer to Win 10, I'm trying to deal with this problem. When my computer starts it shows the message: "Critical error start menu and Cortana aren't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in".

I joined to a forum to look for some help, and I found an instruction which said to run the command "chkdsk /f /r".

So, I did it; my computer restarted and it was solved. But, when I turned the machine on in the next day the message was there again! I ran the command another time, the computer rebooted and it was solved. But, every time I turn on my computer the message pops up for me and I have to run the command in cmd to my machine work.

Can someone help me to find a solution without the necessity to reinstall Windows?

A:Critical error start menu and cortana aren't working

There are previous posts on this and also the tutorial on running DISM. The info on running chkdsk is not the solution. See below.

This is an issue caused by Internet Security Software that we are finding out. If you have any third party Internet Security Software installed, uninstall it and the error should go bye-bye.

HElP!  When I turned on my laptop this morning I received a critical error that said "Critical Error - your start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in"  I restarted 3 times after that each time with the same error.  So I reached out to HP support by chat.  Was in contact with a very nice agent, took control of my screen and got to work.  After the 3 restart by the agent the chat did not reconnect.  I waited a bit assuming the agent would call me on my cell (we had already reconfirmed that number) and no call.  So I tried to reconnect on chat and chat would not connect at all.  I restarted again, still no chat.  So I called the support line.  Got transferred many times and then was told that they would have to charge me to help.  And I explained to them that I was in the MIDDLE of getting it fixed with someone on chat for free but we were disconnected and now what was I supposed to do?  He/She was in the middle of doing something to my computer and I have no idea what was done.  I talked to a supervisor who after much discussion found out that the chat system had crashed and they expected it up in a couple of hours.  Well, it has been 6 hours and still the chat is not working and I still don't have a fucntioning start button AND I have no idea what the tech did to my computer.  Help me!!Thank you!

Hello,

I am struggle a lot with Windows 10 honestly.
So all of a sudden, Cortana stopped functioning and start menu stopped working.
I have tried all steps and tweaks available out there to fix the issue beside changing the profile and backing up the entire user because I can't risk doing that and lose my files.
So I tried restarting which Microsoft recommended including their start menu fix which resulted in nothing.
Tried powershell command, no changes yet.
Tried doing updates... NADA
Tried creating a local administrator user and nothing yet.
So I'm hoping there is someone who had similar issue and hopefully got that fixed.
Please help me out from this mess.

all of a sudden my laptop started to give a critical error every time I click in the start menu button. I tried different solutions to solve the issue (disk check, disk scan, stop and start services, uninstaling dropbox) but none of them solved my issue.

My notebook is practically inoperable. Do you have some idea on what else should I do to solve this?

I will be deeply grateful.

My younger brother and I share a computer. It is Windows 10 Pro. I was letting him use it while i was asleep. All I know is that he was playing his video games. Anyways, he left the house to go hang out somewhere and i wake up to see that when i turn on the computer, only his account shows at the sign-in screen. Meanwhile, there are THREE accounts on this computer. My account, His account, and a local that my other siblings use sometimes. I restarted and even shut down my computer about 4 times. I waited until he came back and logged on his account to check what was wrong, and I see that my account is still there with all my files and docs. The other local account is there too. I log out to see if my User name is there but it isn't. I tried to see if my account was deactivated using these methods but none of them worked. I've looked on Microsoft's forums but all I found was how to activate the built-in administrator account. Please do your best to help!! I have important work to do on my account but i can't access it.

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

Virus scan didn't find alerts of any kind

To make a long story short- below is the log file of HiJackThis. Please review it and reply if you see something to be concerned with for repairing my computer.

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

Ok, so, I woke up this morning, came down to my computer which was at the splash screen(pin screen). Assuming some update had occured while I slept, I input my pin to open windows. much to my suprise when it loads up, none of my icons have text labels. I thought, that's a might odd. So I right-click to refresh the screen, and much to my chagrin, there is no text in the right-click menu either. I scroll over to type CMD into the little Cortana window, and that's not functioning either! On to start menu, nope, nothing happens when I click there. Ok, don't panic, let's see what google has to say. Ok, seems promising, many people seem to have had a no text issue with windows 10. Wait, what the hell is Comodo? I don't have that. I just have some crap Aaron's installed. So there you have it, I have no text in windows, windows explorer, Cortana's bar is there but it doesn't do anything, and the windows button does nothing, but I can right-click it, but the menu that pops up has no text, but the buttons in it do appear to function, I'd just have no clue what I would be clicking. A little backstory, yesterday I was attempting to fix an error where I couldn't run a program that was trying to execute a file in the Temp directory. After numerous attempts to allow myself permissions, I changed ownership of the C drive. Following search results, I have tried the "scannow" and 'reinstall all Windows apps' suggestions. Scannow found no errors, and reinstalling Windows apps did nothing to help. When I click on the Start button (that usually brings up the Programs Menu, I get the little twirling blue icon for about 5 or 6 seconds, then... nothing. Cortana is dead, or away on vacation.

BTW, all my Taskbar program icons work, all the system tray icons (except 'Notifications') work, and a right click on the Start button brings up the usual context menu. Also, I tried installing Start10, but that didn't work either.

Is there anything I can try instead of a reinstall?? Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello, sorry to hear that.. join the many who have or are experiencing that (but far more don't).

Please see
Taskbar/Start button not working! - Page 14 - Windows 10 Forums
- you can read the whole lengthy thread if you like of course.

Do not run Powershell commands to try to fix it.. they break apps since build 10586 in November.

There will be a good number of similar threads where this has been discussed, so please feel free to search the forum and then post back if not solved.

Please note that Win 10 is relatively fragile as regards its newer features- e.g. Cortana, universal apps, start menu. A clean install is more likely to result in fewer problems.

Do turn on System Restore (off by default) and 3rd party disk imaging, regularly updated, is strongly recommended so you can restore your system to a previously working state in, say, <30mins without technical help.

Good luck

Hi: I upgraded from Win 7HP and everything went well.  After a few weeks(and I assume an update) I cannot use the start menu or the search bar/ Cortana. I have to right click it to be able shut down or access control panel. No apps are accessible
either.  I don't get the start menu/smart screen tab when I go to settings either.

Intel Core i5-6200U 2.3GHz
Intel HD Graphics 520

Running fully up-to-date version of windows 10 with no additional software

It seems that whenever Cortana is enabled I cannot use the microphone or speakers because the windows audio srevice turns itself off. As well as some wireless networking and start menu/task bar issues whcih I will explain in detail here. I have experimented with cortana being off and restarting the laptop and it works flawlessly. If i enable cortana I will immediately get a red x next to the speaker logo in the taskbar and i get the error message, "The Audio Service is not Running".

I go ahead and open up services.msc, and can see that the audio service is set to automatic but is not running. I restart the audio service yet I still cannot access cortana. After a few minutes the red x will appear again signifying that the audio service has stopped again. Once this happens I no longer have access to the start menu or the taskbar (none of the icons can be clicked on or selected). At this point my wireless icon in the taskbar will goa way and the symbol for a hardwired connection will come back on. Even putting the laptop into airplane mode and back off again my wireless adapter will not become active.

To gain access again to the start menu, I have to use the windows key on the keyboard to "unfreeze" the start menu/taskbar. At this point I c... Read more

A:Cortana disables Windows Audio Service, Wireless Adapter, & Start Menu

Hi, never seen this reported; I gather this is a new laptop, with nothing installed.

Assuming you have not configured settings in some strange manner or been infected, there's little to go on.

Your first port of call is definitely your supplier. (Mine is good- technically quick and competent- they did a remote session recently to discover what they believed could be achieved could no longer on this model!).

Given it's a brand new configuration, you could try completely formatting your disk and reinstalling Windows, but I would not do that before contacting your supplier.

You may also have a recovery partition which allows you to reset it to ex-factory condition.

On all my pc's I now have a "get cortana for my phone" message in all the cortana action windows. How in the heck do I get rid of this? it is screwing up all my viewing habits for weather, sports score etc.

Why does microsoft keep jamming all this junk in the cortana window, I don't want anything except what I choose to have displayed.

I had a strange error earlier today with Win 10 laptop saying there was a Sign In critical error.  I also experienced recently a strange issue during work on a spreadsheet where the screen would suddenly go black for a few seconds and then return.  I ran Kaspersky's vulnerability tool and decided to remove all flash and shockwave.  After that, I thought the system worked better but I did not go back to the spreadsheet.
One note: I had to manually delete the Macromed file folder by using the Elevate This tool.  That worked well but not sure why I had to do that since the uninstaller should have removed all remnants.
I also own HitMan Pro and CC Cleaner (I do not use the registry cleaner tool) and use them once a week.
Thanks for helping me.

I'm going to need some more information. If you will tell me the make and model of this computer that would be nice. And if you could do the following:Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system, download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.Right-click FRST then click "Run as administrator" (XP users: click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.Press the Scan button. When finished, it will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool was run from. Please copy and paste the log in your next reply.Note 2: The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory the tool was run from). Please also paste that, along with the FRST.txt into your next reply.Reviewing these logs will take a day or so, just for a heads up.

A couple weeks ago, we got an early look at Cortana in Windows 10 and thanks to the new leak of Windows 10 build 9901, we have a lot more to share about the new feature.
As you can see from the images in this post, in build 9901, Cortana is much more refined in her appearance and she appears to be more responsive on our install. More so, we can also dig into the settings of the feature and gain a better understanding of where the feature is headed.

If someone has already posted a thread about this issue, forgive me if this is redundant. Anyway, the start menu doesn't work (Critical Error: Your Start Menu Isn't Working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in.") Also not working are any of the start menu-related apps (weather, news, calculator, etc), Cortana and Edge Browser. Pretty much all the things that make Windows 10 so appealing don't work. An hour on a chat with a Microsoft Support Tech yielded no solution. We tried: runing "sfc /scannow", something with command prompt and Powershell, and another scan with "DSIM". Also tried logging in in Safe Mode and then restarting. BTW, the "sfc /scannow" did find errors and repaired them, but that didn't solve the problem. Go figure.

I'm thinking there's no real solution to this problem until Microsoft releases some kind of patch, but if someone has any other idea, I'd sure appreciate it. I really don't want to go back to Windows 8.1.

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2.

I have a situation where a program shows on "All Programs" but not in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs in Explorer. How can I see that shortcut or whatever in Explorer?

Also, on C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs there appear items (files, shortcuts, whatever) of the same name. What's going on here?

Thanks,

royeo

I Just had a log in error. I have a Dell Precision 7710 mobile work station with the Anniversary Update. I turned on the machine and tried to log in and got:

---------------
We can't sign into your account
This problem can often be fixed by signing out of your account, then signing back in. If you don't sign out now, any files that you create or changes that you make will be lost.
---------------

Logging out and restarting did not work. I shut it down, undocked (it is a Thunderbolt Cable Dock), and then restarted. Luckily it was back to normal log in. I shut down docked, and booted and it was normal log in again.
Not sure what happened. Hope the issue does not come back.

I read online this happened to others, but cannot find a cause or fix (other than restarting) and wondering if anyone knows why this happened.

thanks

Hi there. This is my first post, apologies if I have skipped forum rules or if this is in the wrong section but facing a slight emergency here.

Started facing this problem since today morning. Start Menu doesnt work upon clicking. Task Manager works when system first boots but then goes into "Not Responding" mode, doesn't work either. Cortana/Search doesnt work. Currently cant click icons on desktop either. Right click doesn't seem to be working either

Third party apps like games seem to be working fine oddly enough.

Tried a system restore, system restore failed. Tried reinstalling windows apps via powershell, command ran for a really long time, before I got the "Server Execution failed" message. Have tried creating a new user, new user creation via "Manage User Accounts" tends to hang again. Have tried running below from cmd, returned with no errors.
=> sfc / scannow

Have run a malware check, returned negative.
Have run the windows troubleshooter, got a message "Fix or work around emerging issue 67758"

Getting this message right now:: ms-settings personalization-background => This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.

I haven't performed a clean install of Windows yet on my system, as I am trying to determine if there's any way to fix this problem without formatting my ... Read more

A:Windows 10 Start, Cortana, Task Manager not working

Hi, welcome to tenforums.

Assuming you are using build 10586, the powershell command previously used for fixing universal apps is broken- it actually breaks the apps. One person has suggested a method of taking ownership of the relevant folder and copying back the necessary files.

However your problems seem more widespread, so I would suggest this:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums
This will let you keep almost everything, programs and settings. It will create Windows.old, and takes as long as installing Windows- effectively it's almost the same procedure.

Limitations:
- your associations will be reset to MS default
- you will probably lose any non-standard fonts
- you will lose any system icon customisation
- system restore will be disabled- you will need to turn it back on again.

** Since we don't know what caused the problem, I would recommend you first
- run
chkdsk /F C:
from an admin command prompt (Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (admin).
- create a disk image of what you have now.
This is a big repair procedure, so you want to be sure you don't lose any data.

Everyone should routinely use disk imaging -
Start using disk imaging. Regularly. Before any major change, and after a big change or a series of smaller changes. System Restore isn't enough.. it can help sometimes, but only if you turn it on (it's off by default.. absurd).

Get a copy of Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backupper (both have free options). The first is more ... Read more

Hi All,
I've got a system here which is acting up and I'm looking for ideas of how to resolve. Specs are:

Windows 10 Home (upgraded from W8.1)
i7-3632 8GB RAM 64bit
Inspiron 17R5720 laptop

Here's the problem: Everything works fine upon boot, but then, something happens over time, and things stop working.

Start left-click not working/Start right-click works
Notification left-click not working/Notification right-click menu shows, but open action center doesn't work
Quick Launch opens and works
All icons pinned to the taskbar work including File Explorer
Cortana and search not working - can't type in box
Speaker icon left-click does not work, right-click does

This is all intermittent, and resolved with a reboot.

Something sets it off to stop working - perhaps the screensaver/lockscreen?

Fast Startup is off, hybernate off as well.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated. TIA.

A:Start/Notification/Cortana/Search Stop Working

Hi, I'll assume all is sound e.g. chkdsk, SFC show no problems.

Have you tried a clean boot to see if the symptoms recur?
And if so, Safe Mode?

I.e. start to identify potential conflicts.
