Windows will not accept correct password

Q: Windows will not accept correct password

Moved and cannot open windows with correct password. How can I correct?

Preferred Solution: Windows will not accept correct password

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I encrypted several USB drives, using the same password for all. A few weeks ago I tried opening one, using what I know to be the correct password, and it was rejected. The same problem also occurred with all the others. Additionally when I plug in the USB drive an icon does not appear on the desktop as it did before, and still does for an unencrypted drive.

I tried running the disk utility and it says everything is fine. I have tried both USB ports also. I was also told to run the system log but the content doesn't tell me anything I understand.

I have a Macbook Air and am running OSX 10.10.

Hello, so I've just found an old laptop I've had hoarded with windows 8 on it. Everything on it is super outdated, and I noticed it had my account on it which was basically my Microsoft account. I tried to sign in, but it says it's incorrect. I know my
password, and I've changed it over the years, but since the laptop is so old, it wants me to put in the last password I used to sign in on it. Problem is that I had so any password changed and I cannot remember what password I used. It will not let me use
my new password, because it says it's incorrect. Any way to fix this?

I have had a hotmail account for several years with the same address and password.
With this id I was able to access hotmail, windows live spaces, etc., etc..
I am using windows 7 ultimate (activated) and suddenly
I get the message that I am entering an incorrect password.
It is the same password I have used since creating this account and it was entered correctly. Now they say I have entered an incorrect password so many times that I can no longer sign in.
Any idea what's up here.

A:hotmail won't accept correct login.

Hi Michael. . .

There is nothing that we here at TSF can do to help you with a password problem. I can tell you that I use Live mail with multiple accounts and can access any of the accounts from any computer.

I suggest that you take a look at this KB for hotmail issues --> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316659

I must now close this thread.

2 days ago I upgraded my laptop from Vista to Windows 8, I didn't have the router network password handy so I skipped that. I set up a new Microsoft account because I didn't have one and I was able to use the laptop for a while. After shutting down for the night I was unable to get back in (it wouldn't accept my password). I reset the password and verified that the new password worked by signing into my MS account on another computer. I connected the laptop to my router with a cable but it still would not accept my MS password. Many hours later, I did manage to get in and thought the problem was resolved.

Today: still connected by cable, laptop won't accept the MS password.

If I ever get back in I'll set it up so that I don't need to go through an MS account but I need to get in first.

Any suggestions?

Just posted this and tried again and suddenly I can get in - very confusing

Check your keyboard setting. I had set Canadian keyboard, then when you type @, it becomes " (but I didn't know because screen show only dots), that's why Windows 8 didn't accept my password.

Just bought a new laptop Install seemed to be going well until I entered the wrong password for Wireless Network Chose to do a recovery to try to solve that issue. Upon restarting, my password was no longer accepted, although the password hint was still there. Not sure if the problem has to do with the fact that I performed a recovery, or because I somehow entered the wrong password twice during initial setup, or perhaps there's a finite number of password attempts that Windows 7 allows before it locks you out, because I've tried about 200 versions of my password Can anyone help?

I have had w7 installed for about 2 weeks with no prob. This morning I briefly used my tablet pc (hp 2730p) for about 30 min. I put it to sleep to take my gf to work and when I got back about 40 min later i tried to log on and it wouldn't accept my password.

At first, I thought it was just not accepting my password but, at random, I deliberately input incorrect passcodes and nothing happened. It basically resets the cursor and gives me the option to reset password.

So I booted in SM and changed the password and nothing happened, I tried to remove it and nothing happened, it's as if the screen just won't leave or something.

Please don't redirect me to usual tuts about this, because it's clear to me that this isn't an ordinary problem seeing as in how I have tried just about everything to reset/remove my password.

Please help, thanks.

Hello there-- what a way to start the day --and thank you in advance.

Like the title says: Windows 7, won't accept a password I set to it for my HP 620, though with a special character; which goes for Kar?s1990 --that's the password. Password that used to work flawlessly in weeks I have had it in use though until today after coming back from my morning routine, to boot the system, to find out every time I try to write "?" to complete the password properly, it instead adds another black dot to the input field in which case the form ends like: Kar'as1990 instead.

The keyboard isn't Spanish though configured, to international English, so to give me the special character without a problem. To throw as well, I had some virus attack yesterday; but swept them immediately. Nevertheless, I don't know if that have something to do with the keyboard no properly writing the a with the accent I'm seeking it to input. And for my surprise, not to my enjoyment; hence today is college's second quarter starts, yet here am I, with important files to deliver in there. Such a beautiful day.

Any idea how do I resolve this? UuU.

Today windows 7 has decided to just stop accepting my password for my administrator account. I have only ever used one password on this pc and I am the only user who has ever even touched it since the day I built it about 2 months ago!

I always thought that my account which I named Polar (based on theme), was THE administrator account renamed, then today I was trying to transfer some files from my ssd to hdd and I was told I did not have administrator privileges.

So then I logged out to switch user to see that there was a 'master' administrator account, there is only one password that i could have set for this. I have also tried every one of the 4 passwords that I ever use and none work, so there is no possibility that I am getting the password that I set wrong!

I have tried to restore to an earlier point in case this is some sort of hacking or virus thing but the system restore will not work without administrator privileges.

I understand that it is against forum rules to ask for a way to reset this password but could somebody help me figure out whats going on? Has anybody heard of this problem before?

A:[SOLVED] Windows 7 will not accept my Administrator password, please help!

I have just managed to get it sorted out. I had tried to restore windows to an earlier point by using the repair function that is available when I insert the windows 7 installation cd but I was not allowed to run the restore or the repair feature without administrator privileges.

So I restarted the computer with the windows 7 installation cd in the drive and went into my bios, I then booted from the installation disc and this allowed me to bypass administrator security and restore the system to a disk image that my wonderful machine created last night while I was asleep.

This was such a random incident and I still don't know how this happened, I do suspect that an external threat of some sort must have been involved. Anyway that's how it can be fixed if it ever happens to you!

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 8 or 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Identify your network if it is not obvious.

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

My brother has a PC with Windows 10 and two Administrator Users:
#1 User: MS Account (the main one, used by my brother)
#2 User: Local Account (Secondary one, used by myself)

Since the login page is usually bypassed in this PC via netwizpl setup, none of us usually need to insert a password at startup, but after a Windows Update the login page reappeared, and my brother can't access his MS account any more because his password is not recognized.

Useful info

It's no keyboard issue: the keyboard layout is consistent with settings and we also checked the correct password spelling with the "eye" icon
Resetted MS password, but no joy: we have tried to reset the MS account password. The new password grants access to the MS account at https://login.live.com, but it's still useless when trying to login to Windows with the MS account.
All OK with the Local Account: the Local Account still grants login, and since it's an Administrator account it still allows access to the other account data.
Haven't done a Restore (yet): An obvious (but not necessarily effective) solution could be a Windows Restore. I'll probably try to Restore a previous System State if I don't find a better solution, but I'd prefer to understand the cause of this issue.

A:Windows 10 doesn't accept Microsoft Account password change

Have you gone into the MS account from the local account and changed to the new password?

I assume that your local account is of the Admin group, which should give you access to the MS account settings.

Hi all,

I got a problem I can't seem to fix. I checked online for help to no avail.

Here's my problem:

I boot my Dell (windows 7 Professional) and when the welcome screen appears all I get is "password is incorrect'"

There are no usernames present nor administrator. When I click on the "ok" underneath the password is incorrect, It brings up my username, but when I enter my password it says it's incorrect (it's not). I can't log in from safe mode, nor will system restore fix the problem.

Since this is an old work computer I was never given the disc that could solve this problem.

Anyone have any idea of what is wrong and how it can be fixed?

Thanks in advance,

I can't remember fully now but I was having a problem with setting up a schedule in Macrium Reflect, it kept failing to accept my Win 10 password. I went to 'netplwiz' thinking I could just login without a password but then after I rebooted I could only get to the win 10 login screen, the one after the pretty picture. It seems there is a scheduling problem with Reflect after the anniversary update and I haven't been able to use it since.

I reset my Windows password but that fails as well so it seems to me that I somehow need to get back into 'netplwiz' again in order to remove the tick 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer' but I don't know how to get to it! I found this very complicated to understand as it seems to worded back to front, but I was told to add the tick in order NOT to have to log in!

As I downloaded the update and installed it I don't have an ISO, but assuming there is an ISO (anniversary build) can I create one on this spare laptop and use it on the one I can't get into ? That's assuming it will help me to overcome the login problem?

Thanks for any assistance.

I recently set a password for my computer. I locked my computer and typed it in (so I know for a fact that its right). But when I started my PC this morning it automatically brings me to a screen saying 'User name and password is incorrect'. I press OK and re-enter my password (WHICH IS 100% CORRECT) it says it's wrong.

So when my computer is starting up I pressed F8 and went into System repair. It brings me to a screen to enter a password, I type the EXACT same password as before and it lets me in. I am trying to log into my user account 'Tyquan' when my PC starts up AND on the system repair.

I only have one account which is administrator, I never set a password when configuring my windows for the first time, and even if I did it would be one of 3 passwords (I tried them all and all stupid variations of them that they could be)

I'm just confused as to why my computer is rejecting my password in one screen but accepting it in another.

A:Windows 7 suddenly rejecting correct password.

Hello Tyquann, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you set Windows to automatically sign in to the user account that you changed the password for, then that could be the issue. Netplwiz will still use your old password unless you updated it in netplwiz by starting over and setting it up again below.

Hello everyone,
the other day I shutdown my computer, then upon restarting it - I entered my password at the login screen as I always do.

Now I know for a fact it is the right password. And the strange thing is, when I get the error (Wrong username or password) it doesn't happen immediately, it goes like it's about to start windows, then comes back to the error.

Now I have bypassed it somehow by pure will, by entering the password over and over again.
And when I was finally logged in, I did a system restore to see if that would work. But upon restarting it brought me back to the login, and the problem remains trying to get back in again.

Also, I went and set the setting to bypass the password, by unchecking it in the control panel.

So now when restarting my computer, it goes automatically to the error instead of the login screen. So before even typing the password, it just presents the error right off the bat.
This is all very strange, any help is appreciated.

Hello,  newbee here.   Looking for some help with a gateway laptop.  Had a shutdown prompt to update.  Hit that fun button to shut down and came back to a usless laptop.  The computer seems to fire up correctly.  It takes me to the password screen and waits for my input.  When I enter the correct password the system sends message that "you can't sign in to your PC right now.  Go to account.live.com to fix the problem, or try the last password you used on this PC. "
Help.  I do not have any restore disc for this unit.  Is there a way into safe mode to disable the password?  or can I restore to before the last update?  I need past this screen to try anything though.
Thanks for the help

A:windows update from 8 to 8.1 will not allow access with correct password?

The error that you've received is saying that (most likely) you're not entering the right password.
Go to account.live.com and get them to reset your password.
This may help to reset the system (and will wipe everything off the system):
- at the login screen, click on the icon in the lower right
- hold down the "Shift" key and then click on "Restart"
- continue to hold the "Shift" key until the system boots into the recovery mode
- Once in recovery mode, click on "Troubleshoot", then of "Reset my PC" (these may not be the exact words)
Worst case, contact Gateway for a set of recovery disks.
Here's a page that I wrote back in 2012 that has instructions:  http://www.carrona.org/recdisc.html#gateway

My wife's laptop rebooted automatically to apply a Windows 7 automatic update and now it says the password is incorrect.

She has had the same password for several years and uses it every day. It is her middle name so she has not forgotten it and it does not use capitals. Caps Lock is defintely off (although we have tried it with it on also!).

We do not have a password boot disk.

I have read about password recovey tools but logically they would not help as we know the password anyway.

Why would the password suddenly be rejected after the update?
How do we get the computer to work again?

Neither of us are very computer literate, so I hope someone can help (in simple English )

A:Correct password rejected after automatic Windows update

Try starting in Safe Mode and see if you can enter the password and have it work there. If so, go into Start Menu->Control Panel->User Accounts->Change your password-> and choose a temporary password for now (make sure it is something you will remember). Restart Windows and see if you can login with the new password.

After multiple Hibernation events: windows login fails to recognize correct password

After repeatedly hibernating the computer for about a week or 2, it will eventually refuse to recognize legitimate password and fail to login, yielding "did you forget your password" message.

IF I shut down the computer (thus losing all open windows) and reboot, the password works fine. I have repeatedly changed passwords, but this does not help.

Windows XP Hibernate feature has never worked properly and that is why Windows defaults with this feature off and hidden from newbies. I love the concept but have always found it to be buggy on every machine it has been on. Periodic shutdown and restart is needed to flush memory, but this is the first time I have seen this particular issue.

It seems to occur when Hibernation fails to stay off and the computer immediately re-awakens when hibernate shutdown is complete. In other words, unit will not stay in Hibernation but cycles back on, unless power cord is pulled. When power is returned, computer may immediately boot up.

This problem began on a newly assembled computer with fresh XP SP2 install. (AMD dual core 6000; 2GB RAM; Asus M2N-E motherboard). All updates done, including XP's problem with dealing with 1GB of RAM and more.

Internet usage is safe and clean on main sites only. I Use AVAST antivirus, Spybot, Ad-Aware. I used a SmitfraudFix as I thought I had an infection.

Because this involves immediate rebooting of the computer(hardware?) AND a software issue of not recognizing password, I am leaning to CPU issue. I have seen some weird issues in past that were CPU. I do not have a tester CPU; I do have anothe MB and may try that.

I have a new Windows 7 64 bit laptop which I have successfully connected to my home wlan and it can access the web just fine.
The home wlan is wpa protected and behind a router.

The new laptop can see the other Windows 7 PC (old_pc) in the home wlan and when I double click on the "old_pc" icon in Network it opens it and asks for a username and network password.

When I enter the name of a user on the other PC and its logon password I get an error message saying the the user or password is wrong. But, it is how I logon the other PC!

I checked and the "old_pc" does have its printers shared (and that is what I am trying to access from the new PC) so that is not the problem.

What do I do? What am doing wrong?

When loging in.  I to my desktop my HP Envy will not accept my password.  I'd directed to reset my microsoft password at account.live.com.  Changing my microsoft account password has no affect.  I still cannot log in.  The message I receive is "That password is incorrect.  Make sure you're using the password for your Microsoft account.  You can always reset it at accouhnt.live.com/password/reset".  I've never used my microsoft password to open my Envy.

Running XP Home SP3.

Last week the PC began asking for an Administrative password shortly after I turned it on. I was just a black screen with a smallish black box outlined in white. I'd never even heard of such a thing so I asked a friend who know computers to take a look. He told me that the system wanted some sort of password that had been entered into the BIOS settings. I told him that we'd never set up anything like that, and asked if he could get around it.

He took a small battery out of the PC, and left it out for about 30 minutes. When he put it back, it no longer asked for that password, but when it booted to windows, it did not bring up my desktop. It went to a signon page with the name Guest. And only that name. It did not show my user name (which is Mike), or show my desktop. It also wanted a password for Guest.

Since I have no password on my system, I had no idea. We left it blank, but it brought up a message box reading

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted
Please try again or consult your system administrator.

My friend booted into safe mode, where we got essentially the same result, except that this time the user was Administrator. No other users on the page. And once again it asked for a password.

He went home and got a disk called ERD and booted from that, and then went into some utility from the start menu that would allow him to reset the passwords. He reset both Guest and Administrator, and showed me that t... Read more

Good day, I have a user who has an HP Probook 430 G2 which was shipped with Windows 10 downgradeable to Windows 7Pro. They opted for Windows 8.1, and so the 64 bit version was installed. The user has been working fine for a week. Yesterday he called me saying that his PC would not accept his password. I logged in on Teamviewer (it has Windows Login enabled) and logged in without any problems. Thinking that it may be a stuck key on his keyboard or something, I opened word and asked him to type his password. He typed it both with the normal keyboard and numericals, and again with the numbers which are integrated with the function keys. He also typed it correctly with the USB keyboard which he had connected. I performed an Alt+Ctrl-Del funtion, and changed the password. I tryped in his existing password, and asked him to type in the same password, but with an additional ! at the end, for the new one. He typed in the new password, confirmed it, and it was accepted. I then logged out and asked him to type in his password to log in, it still said the password is incorrect. I tryped in the new password over Teamviewer, it worked. I did a bit of research and found suggestions of performing the reset with the battery and all peripherals removed. I guided him through this this morning, he booted the laptop with nothing attached, just the battery re-inserted. Same thing. This completely baffles me. Please could someone advise me? Thank you.

This is a new one on me I could help you via teamviewer if you want me to just message me. Anyways back to your problem there could be some sort of virus on the computer which is making it play up you may need to do a scan just to be safe? Also what happens if you create a new user instead of password do it that way? Also using windows 8.1 you can upgrade to windows 10 and use a numeric password to do that be so much easier then typing it. This is the only thing I could think of its really strange. You could try logging into the adminsitrator and try that see if it still does it then? Or is iit only on that account?  Thanks hope I helped a little bit.

Is the Recovery Console installed on the system? At what point...are you prompted for a password? You might read the following: How to use CHKDSK in the XP Recovery Console - http://pirules3.14.googlepages.com/recovery_console_chkdsk Generally speaking...there is no entry required on the password line, just hit Enter to move to the next line.And...why would you expect your daughter's system...to accept your password?Louis
