How to use T480s Built-in display and two external Displays through DisplayPorts at the same time

Q: How to use T480s Built-in display and two external Displays through DisplayPorts at the same time

I'm trying to figure out on how to get a working setup where the T480s (20L7001UMX) is connected to a Pro Docking station 40AH0135EU. The laptop has only the built-in GPU from Intel. What I would like is to have both the built-in display and two external displays. But my issue is that once I hopen up the laptop, one of the external displays go dead. Is this a feature as it should or am I missing something?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

There are two physical USB C sockets. 1. The "official" one, it's known to be Thunderbolt 3 capable, controlled by an Alpine Ridge LP so x2 PCIe lanes and 1 DisplayPort is available when in TB3 and also the USB C port is DisplayPort Alternate Mode capable.2. The "docking port" one, nothing is known about it except it's very unlikely to be TB3 capable. But what about DisplayPort Alternate Mode ?  In other words, if you bought two USB C to DisplayPort adapters could you run two 4K @ 60Hz monitors? To compare my TP25 (and so the T470 and very likely the T470s) can run DP from the USB C port and another from the Pro/Ultra dock but the T480s dock is different.

Hello, I have a Lenovo T480S running Linux and am trying to connect two external monitors without the use of a doc station. Since I cannot use both HDMI and USB-C ports at the same time as described in the documentation: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/pubs/t480s/html_en/index_en.html#Using_an_external_display_(topic... I connected as following : The first display is connected via HDMI to the HDMI port and is working without any problems. The second display is connected to the  the USB-C (Thunderbolt 3 compatible) port, using an USB-C to HDMI cable like this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075V5JK36/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  But the second monitor does not work, even with the HDMI port not in use. Any pointers on how to connect two displays at the same time to the T480S without a doc ? Is that even supported ? Thanks and best regards,MMV.

Hi everyone!I recently purchased a T480s with the following specs:- i7 8550u- MX150 Graphics- 16GB of RAM- WQHD Display I am running a Setup with the following Displays: internal Display @ WQHD, external Display 1 @ WQHD, external Display 2 @ FHD.Everything works perfectly fine, if I connect External Display 1 via a Thunderbolt Dock and DisplayPort and External Display 2 via HDMI directly. The problem I encounter is the following:I have some "small Adapters" for Thunderbolt -> HDMI or Display Port. They used to work fine until yesterday, now all adapters, except for one (USB C -> HDMI, USB and USB-C) have stopped working. All I get is a message stating that there is a malfunctioning USB device.Funny part: All adapters work fine on a Dell XPS15, Lenovo MIIX 510 Tab, and so on. Whats the problem? I already tried System Restore to a few days ago, did not help... Thanks,Jakob

Hello everybody, I've been scouring the internet for the answer to this question but haven't been able to find anything absolutely concrete. Does the P51S support three external displays + the built-in LCD, all at the same time? The Quadro M520 within claims to be able to do so. I have beeen attempting to set this up using two different docks - the USB-C ultra dock (40A80045US) and the 170W ultra dock (40A2017US) - and I've yet to get it working. Windows can see all four displays, but will only use three. If one attempts to extend the desktop to the fourth, it disables another monitor, keeping the total count at three. I've seen some topics about this already but it's always about the P51 - which seems to do it just fine as long as you know what ports to use.  If anybody has any additional information or insight, it would be greatly appreciated!

I have several users who are on T480s laptops with intel graphics connected to Ultradocks. They would like to have 2 external monitors in addition to the laptop screen and use all 3 as extended desktops. When I try and set that up, one of the external monitors mirrors the built in screen. I cannot seem to get all three to work independantly. The graphics display properties won't let me say all three should be extentions. What am I doing wrong?

I've been using my ProDock for well over 9 months with two displays connect to it.For some reason, I've always been forced to limit myself to one VGA connected display and one connected via HDMI or DisplayPort. Now today for some reason, it suddenly will only connect one at a time. The moment I connect the second display, they both turn off. If I connect one of them to the dock, that monitor will work fine with the laptop.Did some update roll out or what is happening here?

I have a Dell XPS L521x with Intel 4000 graphics as well as Nvidia GeForce GT640M. I currently only have one external display using the display port and I want to get a 2nd external monitor but I'm not sure if I can. I have read elsewhere that Intel 4000 graphics only supports up to two displays whether or not one of those is the internal display. So since I have a dedicated graphics card am I able to go up to go up another display? If you need more information let me know. Thanks!

A:Can I set up 2 external displays and my internal display?

I found the answer to my question. I went into control panel and looked at my display setup and my external monitor is using the Nvidia chip so I have expansion room for one more monitor.

Hello,
I'm using a Latitude E7440 with a Dock and two monitors connected to it. (Both with DVI)
Sporadically (often already shortly after starting the laptop) one or both of the monitors are going black for about 5 and come back after.
I already tried several things to fix the issue but haven't been able to find a solution yet.

What I've tried so far:

Update to latest BIOS
Use different display driver
Used a different dock
Mainboard replacement
Installed latest MST HUB FIrmware
Disabled Display Port in the monitor settings
At this point I don't know what else to do to fix this issue and I'd really appreciate any help from others.

A:Built computer- first time- no monitor display

Are you really using a 4GB DDR2 PC5300 SO-DIMM KIT? That is for laptops. You should be using 240 pin SDRAM DDR2 667. Also, remove the soundcard for the time being. It can conflict with the onboard sound until you have a chance to disable the onboard sound in the BIOS later.

I have an x1 yoga  20FQ model (i7, 520 integrated).  I am coming from a gen1 x1 carbon and had a gen3 x1 carbon as an temporary machine. On my x1 carbon with the onelink dock (usb 3) I was able to connect 2 external monitors + a 3rd monitor into the mini dp + the laptop built-in display.  Essentially I had 4 monitors. I am surprised that I cannot get the same setup with the x1 carbon gen3 and now with the x1 yoga.  One of my next step is test the vga port on the onelink+ dock to see If I can then enable the built-in port. The x1 yoga and x1 carbon (gen1) intel cpu/gup specs shows that they both support 3 displays.  I am thinking the usb dock is the difference maker.    Is this possible on the newer machines?

Hi, The Dell UP3218K 8K monitor uses TWO Displayport 1.4 cables to deliver its 8K 60Hz, using a technique called MST and DisplayID. The technique is described in this VESA document https://www.vesa.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Display-Summit-USA-2016-AMD-VESA-SAH_Final_r1.pdf at page 10. All of the X1 Extreme gen1's GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q's and gen2's GTX 1650 MaxQ and P1 gen1's Quadro P2000 and gen2's Quadro T2000, support this feature, even see here https://www.nvidia.com/en-sg/geforce/products/10series/compare/ for 1050 they say "Maximum Digital Resolution*: [email protected]" and "* 2 - 7680x4320 at 60 Hz RGB 8-bit with dual DisplayPort connectors". ALL these four Thinkpads have *TWO* displayports, each via the Thunderbolt, and therefore can drive one of these 8K displays by connecting the display to the TWO Thunderbolt-displayports, right?  (Either use an USBC-Displayport converter on each port, OR: Driving the display via both Thunderbolt ports can even be done concurrently with using a Thunderbolt expansion chassi on each of the two Thunderbolt connectors, where the Thunderbolt chassi has a Displayport passthrough slot, e.g. like the Akitio Node Pro has, see on back there https://www.akitio.com/expansion/node-pro there's Thunderbolt in, Thunderbolt out (= daisy chain), and Displayport out. The Thunderbolt cable will have the bandwidth for half-of-8K-60Hz and do Thunderbolt PCIe data at the same t... I have just purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad W540. But currently we have issue with the built-in display. The phenomenon as below: 1. When power on - The built in display can show welcome screen, and even enter the BIOS setup screen. If let it boot normally, the built-in screen then off.2. When booted to Windows 8. The built in display still off. If I connect an external display to the VGA connector, the external display work well. Checked the display option see that it is "clone display --> Built in + External Display". I suspect that there is some thing wrong with the display setting that I don't know how to adjust to get the built-in display works properly. Note that I can see the build in display backlighting but there is no picture shown when in screen cloning setup. Can some one help on this ? Regards Triet Tran

I'm not able to use an external display during the boot process + Bitlocker Screen. T480s on a USB-C 40AF Dock. This functionality exists with T470s and the 40A2 Ultra Dock. There is the proper Display On Dock BIOS setting avaible. This funcitionality exists with the P52s and the USB-C 40AC Dock. It seems like the T480s is missing this functionality, and I want to know if there is a planned BIOS update to fix this issue. I've tried every other possible BIOS configuration, and both USB-C ports on the T480s, there is no way to get an external montior to display during boot when that external display is plugged into a USB-C dock. Please let me know. Thanks!

I'm trying to setup three external screens configuration and stumbled upon the following. I have 3 screens: 1. 4k (3840x2160) 60Hz2. 2560x1600 60Hz3. 1920x1200 60Hz I was hoping to use all possible outputs on the laptop (2 USB-C and HDMI), but apparently you can't do that - you can pick only two out of those three. I also tried using USB-C docking station, and again - it limits resolution to 1200p, which is not enough (4K display via USB-C, docking station via second USB-C and two screens 1200p and 1600p via docking station, the latter gets resolution only up to 1200p). So, I found this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Thunderbolt-DisplayPort-Compatible/dp/B01DYFI1OE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=....It's a Thunderbolt 3 splitter to two Display Port outputs, claiming to support two screens 4K at 60Hz. And it looks like laptop has Thunderbolt 3 ouput. So, will it support all my screens with full resolutions using that splitter? Again, I envision configuration to be:1. 4K display via 1st USB-C (this will be a miniDP adapter with power)2. Splitter via second (Thunderbolt 3), and two other screens (1920x1200 & 2560x1600) connected using that splitter. Will that work? Thanks,Yury

Anyway, I've just completed building my PC, and I power on, and nothing displays on the monitor not even the BIOS. The motherboard I'm using doesn't have onboard video, so i installed an e-GeForce 7600GS PCI-E (i'm thinking this is causing the conflict). What should I do/try? Hi, I have a T480s laptop with a Dell D6000 USB C Dock connected via USB C. I am trying to connect 3 external monitors through the dock. 2 on DisplayPort, 1 on HDMI. I have checked other posts on this forum but they don't deal with the problem or are incorrect I have updated all drivers on laptop for display and I've updated drivers and firmware on dock to latest. The dock will display 2 of the external monitors in any combination of DisplayPort or HDMI with the laptop screen working as a 3rd screen. I can get all 4 monitors working with the DisplayPort monitors on the dock and the HDMI plugged directly in to the laptop. However I can only intermittently get 3 monitors working through the dock. Usually when I've unplugged all usb ports and restarted the dock. However the second I remove and replace the usb plug from the laptop the HDMI monitor stops working. This is not reliable though and sometimes it just will not work for no obvious reason. It seems to me that USB C Alt Mode is only intermittently working on the laptop and it seems to stop as soon as I unplug and replug the dock. Can anyone help me get 3 monitors working reliably through the dock?

Hi all!! I'm trying to determine if I can utilize 3 external monitors in addition to the laptop screen. I have a T480s with a thinkpad USB - C Dock and my current setup is: - DP to DVI adapter from docking station (for one external monitor)- VGA from docking station (for one external monitor)- Built in laptop screen This works perfect but I'm trying to get a 3rd monitor to work as well. I have a HDMI to VGA adapter that I have tried from the laptop to the 3rd external monitor. It doesn't work. If I unhook the VGA from the dock (one of other monitors), the 3rd monitor will work as expected. It seems trying a 2nd VGA is causing the issue. The 3 monitors I have only have VGA and DVI. I'm thinking about buying either a USB C to DVI/VGA adapter OR a HDMI to DVI adapter but before I do that, I wanted to see if anyone knows if this will work. Sorry for the long message and thanks in advance to anyone that can help! Thanks,

The installed OS is Ubuntu Linux 18.10 (standard flavour, with Gnome). When I set the graphics to "Hybrid" in the Bios, the 2 external displays plugged in the dock are not detected. Network and USB work fine. When I switch to "Discrete", both monitor are detected and work fine. It's annoying, because the laptop heats up more, the fan runs almost all the time and if I use the laptop unplugged the battery is drained much faster, unless I switch temporarily back to Hybrid. I'm grateful for any help!

I am on my second T480s, the first was direct from Lenovo, the second from a local reseller that I am typing with now, and both of them will only display at a color bit depth of 6-bit not 8-bit. To check yours, go to Display Settings then scroll down to Advanced Display Settings and look at your color Bit depth both of my T480s machines are set to 6-bit. Anyone else getting this? If not and yours is displaying in an 8-bit color depth what driver are you using? What I have tried. Called Lenovo and spoke with a very nice tech support person that was awesome. We worked for over an hour trying different things and we could not get the display to work in 8-bit with any of the Intel or Lenovo drivers. I/we went into Services and disabled Windows Update, then uninstalled the Intel UHD Graphics 620 driver and rebooted the system where by default the system uses the Microsoft Basic Display adapter and like magic we are back to an 8-bit display. I then proceeded to methodically load and unload every Intel and Lenovo UHD Graphics 620 driver and every one of them will only work at a 6-bit color depth. The drivers I/we tried that only work at 6-bit:Intel 25.20.100.6577Intel 25.20.100.6519Lenovo 25.20.100.6472Intel 25.20.100.6471Intel 25.20.100.6444Intel 22.20.16.4815Intel 22.20.16.4771 The only driver I/we found that works at 8-bit:Microsoft Basic Display adapter 10.0.17763.1

What I have seen, the October edition is somehow problematic on a lot of machines. So I would suggest you to do what I did myself.....
Uninstall nVidia display driver using Driver Fusion , and then install an older version which was stable there.

And, you should install Service Pack 1.

Hello, So - the problem appears when you are trying to use external screen which one is connected to the docking station (there is only two DisPlay ports and no others dedicated to monitors). When you connect it first time - it's ok. But when you trying to un-dock and dock again - external screen says "no input" and goes down. In other words - external screen is not working. The same issue is described over there:https://support.lenovo.com/lt/en/solutions/ht081248 Mine docking station type is 40AH, but anyway, I tried to run ThinkPad Ultra Dock 135W firmware update - but update says "the firmware you are trying to install is older than the version already installed. My Docking Station: Power adapter is 135W. All drivers are up to date. Btw - I have many of those docking stations with machines. For some of them everything is fine. But seems the problem is with docking station. I have two docking stations on my desk right now. And my computer on one is working fine, but with other on - not. So, it's clear that the problem is with the docking station.

This is more of an intrigue than an issue but I'm still curious as to why this happens. Issue: When placing a T480s on top of another T480s both machines will be forced into sleep mode.  How to reproduce: Line up a T480s on top of another T480s (or T480) and the device will go into sleep mode. I've Stacked T480 units and this does not happen this seems to only affect the T480s line. (These test were preformed on the latest bios/driver revisions) What I think maybe happening is that the T480s when stacked are triggering the lid closed sensor of the other unit. Since this is not the case for the T480 units we have I think it may be because of the thickness of the s models. Is this something that will eventually be fixed via bios update? or is this just a flaw in the T480s design? Thanks for in advanced for your response!

A:T480s is forced into sleep mode when in close proximity to T480/T480s

I've seen this happen in the past, it was due to how strong the magnets are that keep the lid shut.

I know on Intels website, they state that the processor in this laptop cannot support 3 displays, but what I'm trying to do is just have 2 displaying, but both of them external.  I'm not sure if my laptop is broken or something as well, because when I close it even with "do nothing" selected for when I close the lid the external monitor does not become the default display, it stays as an extended display with the main desktop still on the laptops screen. Both monitors and their connections work until I try to connect them both at the same time, then one of them always goes to sleep. If this is even possible with this laptop, can someone point me in the right direction?

Hello,  I just bought the HP Spectre X360 15-bl001na and I want to connect it to my two externals LG monitors. Both are 1920x1080 and I want also the laptop screen to be active when I connect the monitors. I hope this is possible.  The monitors have HDMI ports. I have an HDMI splitter that I connect to the laptop HDMI port but only one monitor works that way. I suppose I need to connect the other monitor trough the USB 3.1 Type C port, using an HDMI converter? If yes, can I use this adaptor for example: http://www.emag.ro/adaptor-usb-3-0-tip-c-hdmi-multiport-4k-power-delivery-digitus-da-70838/pd/D7TL2D... and from the adaptor USB Type-C port can I connect this to have also GigabitChipset Realtek  active: http://www.pcgarage.ro/hub-uri-usb/sharkoon/3-port-usb-30-plus-rj45-gigabit-aluminium-hub-type-c-bla... ? Looking forward your answers. Thank you!Gabriel

I work from home some days so the laptop is not on the dock on my work desk.  When I then bring the laptop to work and dock it, the dual (DP connected) displays won't work and Windows doesn't detect them.  I have to the reboot for it to detect the monitors again and everything is fine after that (until I use the laptop off the dock again).  I've tried updating the dock bios (sp71104 and sp65034) but both disappear up their own behinds when run.  A little help please?

Helo, I am trying to connect two external monitors to my HP ProBook 470 (i7-3632QM, AMD Radeon HD 8750M), one with VGA and another with HDMI,  but I haven't managed yet to have all three, two external and laptops built in screen, working. Does this model support having three screens at all? Thanks!

A:How many external displays are supported

Hi!, @freundVonUns: Welcome, to HP Forum !. Only have drivers for OS Windows. You must search if OS support connect more than one monitor.
