Thinkstation P52s struggling to boot without being docked

Q: Thinkstation P52s struggling to boot without being docked

I have a number of P52s units at a client site. They seem to be having some issues with a driver or two. Today on one of the P52s units, the system undocked wouldn't boot past the Lenovo Red Screen (BIOS)It just sits there until I hit enter to go into the configuration mode. We go to F1Under the Thunderbolt menus we have the following set: Thunderbolt BIOS Assist Mode: Enabled (Was disabled, tech support said to turn it on for some reason)Wake by Thunderbolt : EnabledSecurity Level: I had User Authorization but tech support said to turn that off. Support for Preboot environment is enabled. I was able to get the system to boot today, after changing through some settings. The end user was able to work with the machine docked but stand alone, it just hangs at the Red Lenovo Screen. I do have the graphics in the nVidia control panel set to use the Quadro adapter by default but this was happening before that was set. Today there was a BIOS update, THunderbolt update, Intel firmware update of some sort and some driver updates from Lenovo Vantage. They were all listed as Critical Each one pretty much required a reboot. Once finshed with those I was able to get the machine to load up successfully like 4 times without hanging. The end user took the computer home again today and she is having the same issue. The machine hangs at the red Lenovo screen on boot. We can hit enter to get into the BIOS configuration menus. Any ideas?I spoke with technical support, the first person told me I had a bad system board. THe second tech (after the first one hung up on me for not taking the system board replacement) mentioned I had some settings incorrect possibly. So he had me enable the BIOS assist mode and had me change the security setting to none. THe fans all went on high after we saved and exited then things went back to normal. But the machine still gets no further. Just hangs at the Lenovo screen. I am having the end user leave the laptop over night. I set an alert to see when it comes back online in my RMM tool. Is this a firmware issue? Motherboard (Thunderbolt) issue?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

When I attempt to reboot my T460p (20FWCTO1WW) while it's in its Ultra Dock (40A20090US), it shuts down properly but hangs at the red Lenovo splash screen on restart. If I remove it from the dock and power off/on, it boots normally. I can then put it to sleep, drop it in the dock, wake it up and everything is OK. This only started happening after the application of the latest firmware, R07ET71W 2.11. Has anyeone else experienced this?

Starting several months ago, my X220 either goes into bootloop if docked, or it boots but doesn't recognize USB devices.  I've gone into BIOS and changed any setting i thouight might be related - boot order, USB setting UEFE/Legacy settings, etc.  UI've gone back to defaults, then tried other combinations.  No luck. If I boot untethered, all is well and it recognizes USB devices once docked. Anyomne have any ideas?

I have a Dell Latitute D600 and everything was working fine. Well I started to get the blue screen of death every so often so I ran a chkdsk repair. I guess it found some errors and corrected them. Anyway, now my computer takes at least twice as long to boot. Anyone have any suggestions?

A:XP struggling to boot

First off try going to Start -> Run -> msconfig
Then go to the Startup tab and start unchecking programs that you don't want starting when your PC does. Be sure you know what you're unchecking first though. The name and manufacturer can give some clues, or googling them will tell you what they are. Unchecking all of the unwanted/unnecessary programs should vastly improve your boot time.

Hey guys,

I have a HP Pavillion dv6500 docked into a docking station allowig me to use an external monitor. All works fine apart from on boot, the external screen will come on at the resolution of the laptops LCD rather than the max res of the screen. Simply opening and closing the laptop lid rectifies this problem. Is there a way to solve this that would not hamper the laptop when it was not docked

cheers
macca

A:forced docked PC to boot at correct res

Maybe some else has, but I've not found a "solution" to this same problem. When my laptop is "open", the attached flat panel defaults to the same resolution as the laptop; when the laptop is "closed" it jumps back to full resolution. Merely opening the laptop causes the resolution to reset.

Im not excaly sure where this should go, but admins feel free to move this post if its in the wrong section. I tried overclocking my computer, and to make a long story short, i couldnt get it to OC, so i restored everything to default, and it still has trouble booting. Sometimes it will boot if i let it sit for like 10min, other times it will if i unplug my second HDD. Does anyone have any ideas?

I was thinking it might be the Power supply..

A:Computer struggling to boot

if you were playing around with overclocking, it's possible that you damaged some hardware, keep that in mind. you should probably doublecheck what you have done to the bios (load defaults perhaps) to make sure you haven't made a setting whilst trying to overclock that is causing your problems.

The first time I replaced the SSD I was able to disable the internal battery in the BIOS config settings as per manual instructions. However now my laptop just boots to a blank black screen, and I cannot get to config settings. How do I disable the internal battery? Can I just go ahead and try to replace the SSD without doing so? Should I let it sit there on the black screen and drain power? (but the fan is really loud while it does that)

Hello,I have a T580 P52s 20LB with a 500GB HDD, a ThinkPad T580 P52s M.2 SSD tray and a 500GB M.2 Samsung EVO 970 Pro.  I also have an M.2 to USB-C adapter.  Samsung Magician will not detect the SSD using the adapter so I used a work-around to clone my HDD (all partitions) to my SSD.  Afterward, I installed the SSD using the M.2 SSD tray but I got the boot device not found error.  My tech tried and got the same results. A third tech tried and got the same results.  Even when I had the third tech wipe the M.2, install it and try to do a fresh Window 10 install, it did not work.  I know the drive is fine because it works in other machinces.  I got my SSD tray directly from Lenovo and confirmed before purchasing and after receiving it that it is the correct part. I know the machine is capable of supporting SATA or M.2 NVMe for drive 1 but I can't seem to get this to work.  I picked up a SATA EVO 860 in case help from this forum isn't able to solve the problem.

Hi all,

I'm having some problems with my laptop. It takes an age to start up (5-20 minutes). When it does eventually start it takes a while for the task bar and icons to load (I'm left with a blank screen while it does this). When this eventually loads my background picture disappears.

After a while everything but the background picture loads and it runs OK. I can access everything and seems to be running at normal speed.

It appears to be getting worse each time I start it, and it looks like eventually it's not going to start at all!!

Any help gratefully received! Logs attached.

My computer won't boot. I took it to Geek Squad just this week and they said it's not a hardware problem and that it boots fine in safe mode. Now that I have it home it won't boot at all, which is what it was doing before I took it to them (I have no idea how they got it to boot). Sometimes when I power it on it immediately powers off. Most of the time the power stays on, but nothing happens (i.e., I can hear the fans turn on, or the drive spin for a couple seconds, but nothing happens on the monitor, which is on and works. I know this because I've connected the monitor to my laptop and it works fine). So I'm unable to do anything with the function keys. I've tried booting from the Windows 7 CD, a repair disk, and a bootable hardware diagnostic tools CD and nothing happens (i.e., the monitor remains black). So I can't even run a system restore. However, I took the hard drive (WD10EADS) out of the computer, and using a docking station connected it to my laptop. That worked fine and I was able to see all the files on the hard drive. Is it possible for me to fix the hard drive while it's docked to my laptop? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A:Computer won't boot, but hard drive works when docked to laptop

I'd like to know what's wrong with the computer and how to make it boot again. Of course I'd rather not erase everything on the hard drive (I know that, if need be, I can use the docking station, my laptop, and a new hard drive to back everything up). Thanks!

Have you tried it with a blank hard drive?? None bootable hard drive would do if you don't want to blank it.
It does seem a bit strange. I wonder if it gives you the choice of booting from the second bay and just says it is a floppy drive even if it is a CD

Usually dual-booting two [or more] Operating Systems requires a boot menu of some type at startup where the choice of OS to use is made.

Due to differences in the various versions of Windows it's frequently recommended to install the older version first.
https://www.google.com/search?site=&....0.R1igrBEdrWA

Are the C: and D: drives 2 actual drives or partitions on one drive?

As for the msconfig issue, Win8.1 can't show, the 2 OSes don't know about each other, that's a lot of what dual-booting is about. And yes, I have dual-booted in the past but find it much simpler to use a 4-port KVM and choose the version/computer I want to use, either WinVista, Win7, Win8.1 or Linux Mint 17.

Hi,I'm looking to buy a decent Desktop tower PC that will last me at least 7 years of home use as well as some light video editing and use as a home file server, with a budget of around USD700. Right now I've set my sights on the M720 Tower and the P330 Tower, which I configured to $537 and $643 respectively. Apart from FlexBay, ThinkStation software and a better Wi-Fi card, what am I missing out on on the M720? Or are there any other options in the Think range ? Considerations Reliability. Greeting All,

Happy holidays!

I apologize in advance for any incorrect terminology, but I will do my best.

I need help finding the correct Ethernet (PCIE) Network Expansion Card for my Lenovo Thinkstation desktop.

The pc info is: (Windows 10)

I have already purchased two expansion cards with the assistance of two different technicians. One from Fry's and the other was an on-site tech from Stratasys. Either I am trying to place the card in the wrong slot, or they have instructed me incorrectly.

First please tell me if I am using the correct slot. I think the card should fit in slot 3, because our last pc had the card in slot 3(different pc, so old card does not fit the new pc). Here is a couple photos, and please also reference the spec sheet above if necessary. Slot 1 has the display port connectors.

(Notice the female slot on 3 has only two insertion places and not the required three that are required for the Fry's card that I have pictured below.)

Here is an image of what the Fry's tech support told me would work, and it does not fit:

(The card must have an Ethernet port like the one in this image.)

We will use the expansion card to transfer data between this new Lenovo PC and our 3D printer. There is not any particular required transfer rate. So if you would please give me on card at 1000 mbps and another at 1500 mbps or 2000 mbps. not sure if that even exists, just something faster tha... Read more

I installed Windows 7 Pro 32 bit on a New Lenovo ThinkStation P310 from scratch off the .iso image from the Volume Licensing Web site. I have found all the drivers with the exception of the USB Controller. There is a driver on Lenovo's website that says
it is for Win 7 32 and 64 bit but it does not load correctly evidently. Device Manager Shows it with a yellow exclamation Point. Checking Properties it has the following :
Drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
It also lists the following Hardware Id's :

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A12F&SUBSYS_30C017AA&REV_31
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A12F&SUBSYS_30C017AA
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A12F&CC_0C0330
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A12F&CC_0C03
According to Lenovo it should be using the driver I have loaded multiple times as the Renesas driver. Checked Windows updates, installed all updates but still the same. The only 2 things that work plugged into any USB port is a keyboard and mouse. I can
plug anything else into any of the multiple USB ports and the system never appears to even see a device plugged in. Multiple USB thumbdrives I use everyday in multiple PC's loaded with anything from XP to Windows 10 64 bit.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi all, My company has been in the process of getting our task sequences to auto update our computers' BIOS. We want to utilize smbiosbiosversion/major/minor to accomplish this. Unlike the ThinkPad's,which already list it as "version", the Lenovo Support BIOS page for ThinkCentres and ThinkStations do not tell you what the smbiosversion the BIOS is supposed to be. The readme doesn't tell you either. This has become a huge pain point for us, because we have to install updates first in order to determine what the magic number is. Can this number be added to the webpage or the readme for the ThinkCentre/ ThinkStations like it is for the ThinkPads? It's critical for our detection methods! Thanks! UPDATE-Specifically looking for SystemBiosMinorVersion and SystemBiosMajorVersion values, not smbiosbiosversionChanged title to reflect this.

Lenovo please update the BIOS for your older PC with the available microcode from Intel to help avoid Spectre.  When will Lenovo add Sandy Bridge based Intel cpus, and many others, to the list of products at "Reading Privileged Memory with a Side Channel" linked here https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/len-18282 I see Intel have already released new microcode for Sandy Bridge cpu's to mitigate Spectre and many other cpus.  See the long list here https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27431/Linux-Processor-Microcode-Data-File Lenovo need to post far more target dates for BIOS updates, with the new microcode, beyond the recent PCs listed!  I see HP are ahead here, they have aready published dates for their products using Sandy Bridge cpus.  See this link https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05869091  Several HP products on this page use Sandy Bridgde cpus and already have target dates for new BIOS/microcode.  For example the HP Compaq 8200 Elite gets new BIOS and microcode on 19th Jan 2018 - well done HP - a very simlair business class PC to the Thinkcentre M91p.

I love my P52, even if it throttles the CPU a little too easy.

What I don't love is that is won't receive any charge with a 90W adapter or USB-C unless it's hibernated or turned off (and not always then either).
Previous models would give a message that it's not sufficient and use some battery to compensate, but now I have to drag a huge 170W adapter to meeting rooms at work, which are prewired with 90W which should give me more than enough hours on 90W plus battery to last all day.

Is there a good reason to not support these ways to charge?

Hello sveintore! Welcome to Community Forums.

What is the wattage of the AC adapter that came with your machine? Based on the product specifications, the machine's AC adapter is 170W slim tip AC adapter and USB-C doesn't support power delivery. You may refer to the specs here https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20P52/ThinkPad_P52_Platform_Specification....
