Windows 7 64 boots but doesn't work

Q: Windows 7 64 boots but doesn't work

My machine boots to desktop but nothing will open or work. Start button, volume, firefox, task manager, etc. It does this in safe mode as well. It's not frozen as the screensaver will come on and I can move the mouse, I just can't open anything even with keystrokes. I can't restore or run any diagnostics. What can I do?

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 64 boots but doesn't work

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Did it always do this?

Where did you get the win 7 dvd from? Was it downloaded or purchased?

Hi...I'm not sure where to put this request, thought since the Dell Inspiron 15 is running Windows 10 (including latest update) that there might be a conflict between the desktop and the keyboard down in the nuts and bolts somewhere. I can turn the machine on, the capslock light comes on, SOMETIMES the keyboard works well enough to input the pin to get the desktop booted up. Sometimes I have to go through steps to get the touch screen keyboard up in order to input the pin. However, as soon as the desktop is active, the keyboard no longer works. I've updated the drivers, don't know what else to do. When I try a search online for a solution, I get differing ideas on how to solve the problem. I've tried resetting the BIOS to default settings, that didn't work. Any and all help will be much appreciated. I really need the keyboard to be working, my kids do their homework on my laptop.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Tech Support Guys and Gals,
I was using my Hp laptop and the screen randomly froze. I manually powered off the computer and now when I turn it on, I hear one longer beep followed by two short ones. In addition, the screen doesn't work. If I let the computer keep working and boot up, I eventually hear the welcome screen theme play so it seems like the computer keeps functioning, but the monitor won't work. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Updated to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 two weeks ago.
Had problems with Firefox.  Tried to download to replace existing Firefox.  CNET site appeared to be correct but something seemed wrong so I killed the download. But.
- The windows start menu doesn't come up when I click on the icon, but if I right-click, a text menu does appear and lets me, for example, shut down.
.- If I click on the Windows End icon in the task bar, the screen flashes but End does not come up.  Ditto for the Windows Store icon.
-  Somewhere SpyBot S&D was erased, but I was able to download it.
- If I double-click on a photo in Windows Explorer, I get a popup that lists the name of the jpeg and says Invalid Entry to Registry.  If I right click on the photo and go to any of the options the photo is opened except if I choose Photo.
- Firefox cannot properly display the Yahoo mail page, though Pale Moon and Opera can.
- I have Avast Anti-Virus and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and when I run their scans, they find no issues.
SO there are a few issues that I need help with.

A:windows 10 problems - start menu doesn't appear, windows key doesn't work, etc

Well the first thing you should try is to Run System Restore to before all of these problems started or to when you first installed Windows 10.
Then try to download Firefox from there website
Third thing is I would recommend to get rid of Avast it is low end and could be allowing virus I recommend ether McAfee or Norton Security.

Those are some things to think about
but it is all up to you when making your final decision

My wife has a new Macbook Pro and has XP SP2 installed with Bootcamp.
It has been working fine untill today when she went to boot and it stopped after the windows loading screen and before login, it is just a black screen. I can boot into safe mode but can not boot normally nor boot to last known good boot. I can not roll back using a restore point as it just fails. My wife works as a consultant for the Air Force and is required to use Norton security suite. She has to use IE6 or IE7 for the military sites she needs to access. Oh and I can't seem to do a live update for Norton while in safe mode though I have Internet access, I don't know if this is normal as I am a Linux user and when I use windows I use AVG free.

I have been sitting here with it on my lap and while I was typing this I heard the Windows startup tune but nothing else has changed. It took about 5 minutes before I heard that tune

Please, I need some help as my wife is the only income right now and she needs this computer for work

A:Windows boots to black screen (Need fixed for work)

Usually a black screen on normal boot means that the video card drivers are messed up. You can try to get into safe mode, go to start->run->"msconfig". go to BOOT.INI tab and select /BASEVIDEO. Then restart and try to get into normal Windows. If you can, then you know for a fact that it's the video card drivers and you can deal with it.

But I'm not sure why it would take you 5 minutes to hear the Windows startup tune, that might be suggesting something else.

In these situations it's helpful to think about what was the last thing that your wife did, before this happened, it might help shed some light on the cause.

I cannot get Windows Media Encoder 9 to work at all at home, but I have no problems with it at work, so I know I'm not trying to do something with it that it can't handle.

At home, every time I try to convert either an AVI or a VOB to WMV, either using the wizard or the custom settings, it lets me get through it all and then, when it starts trying to encode, it throws up the message:
"Windows Media Encoder has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. ..."

It never gives me any more information than this, just crashes and closes. I've tried repairing it through the control panel, as well as completely uninstalling it and reinstalling it, but it hasn't helped.

At home I'm running Windows XP Media Center. At work, where I've never had it crash, I'm running Windows XP Professional. Is there something in Media Center that causes it to crash? Is there any patch I can download or thing I can do to get it to work on my home computer?

Thanks for your help.

A:Windows Media Encoder doesn't work at home, does at work

I'm currently having the same problem . I open the .vob file set the output folder , settings etc etc . just as it was about to start converting , WME just stops and crashes . I use windows xp home edition so if your company's xp professional can make it work im thinking it is something in the professional edition which allows it to work not something in our edition that doesnt allow it to work. Are there any alternatives for encoding a video? i dont have much cash right now so i was hoping i might find some freeware alternatives . thanks

Since about 3 days now my pc (windows 7 ultimate x64) has stopped working..
It will bootup normally, but when i log in to my account, the theme will be classic, the internet connection has gone walkabout and the computer won't run or open up any programs, like call of duty.. To make matters worse, system recovery wont work, says something about volume shadow copy, and if i turn that on, all my restore points are gone (i haven't made a backup yet). Not even malwarebytes has been able to fix the problem, so either this is a really evil virus or it's something else, but it totally ruined my PC

please, i really need some help with this one!!

Removed itunes from computer (didn't solve the issue with cd-rom player)

Went back to a system restore point that was before the last time I used the CD-rom player and it worked and that (didn't work as well)

Hi folks!Unfortunately, my 2 year old pushed some buttons on my Lenovo B590 laptop and something isn't right. Upon start up (Windows 7 64), I get a black screen with a moving cursor. Ctrl+alt+del doesn't bring up the task manager.I double checked the boot order in BIOS and that looks OK.Restarting in Safe mode works.I also updated the video drivers, and (strangely) I was able to restart in normal and everything looked fine. However, when I restarted again after that, I was back to the black screen in Normal.I've been Googling all morning, and done what I've found. If anyone else has any other suggestions, I'd be grateful for them. And if you have any questions for me, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks!

What I tried
-clearing cmos
-removing battery/replacing battery
-plugging to the motherboard and gpu
-checking the sticks one by one on different slots

The psu, cpu, gpu and the monitor are fine because I checked if they worked on my old mobo so it seems like its the motherboard or ram. Any ideas on what else I can do before taking it to the repair shop (trying to avoid that due to covid).

Hey guys, this is fairly long so bear with me...

Came back to my PC the other day, and it was turned off, when I had left it it was still on. To cut a long bit short, I discovered it was the fuse in the plug for the PSU power lead. So I replaced the fuse, turned on the mains, and BANG - PSU blew up (while it was still installed in PC).

Took it out, replaced with other PSU - started up PC and it would boot OK, and give me the single beep, but then would stay on a black screen and not proceed to the Windows splash screen.

So I tried booting into safe mode, this gave varied results - sometimes it would freeze when loading the various files at that black screen, other times it would actually let me log into Windows but then freeze straight away and I had to reboot.

So I booted from the windows cd-rom, and it would get as far as saying "Setup is loading Windows" or similar, then freeze.

Next, ordered another hd, removed old one - installed the new blank one, ran the Windows bootable cd, and this time it installed Windows fine. There I was thinking everything was now OK - not so. The PC was very unstable and kept crashing while installing new programs and using programs etc. I've gone back to it today, and now I am having the same problems as the previous hard drive. Windows won't load either way, and I can't even re-install from the Windows cd-rom as that freezes like before as well.

Basically all this leads me to believe it's gotta be something... Read more

I have a HP/Compaq nc6000 laptop that is a few years old running Windows XP. All service packs, etc are up to date.

Sometimes the laptop boots up normally and works fine and sometimes it doesn't. After pressing the power button, the power light comes on, the fan starts, (I think I hear) the hard drive spin and then it all stops. The power light goes to amber (charging) and then it turns off.

Typically when it boots properly, at the very beginning, the number lock, caps lock, and a third light all blink together, then turn off and it boots. When it's not going to boot, these lights don't even come on. (That's when I know it won't work.)

I've tried re-seating the memory. That worked twice but now I think it was just luck.

The first time I opened it, I also pulled a huge dust bunny from the fan. The rest of the insides were pretty clean and dust free. I blew everything out anyway.

Before this started happening, the machine was having some weirdness waking up after hibernating.

The problem happens sometimes after I shut it down properly and sometimes not. It's also booted up fine after a crash.

I've tried setting all the power controls to everything always on and leaving the computer on. But sometime in the middle of the night, it powers down. (I don't know whether this is a gentle power down or if it just shuts off instantly.)

The last time, it wouldn't start for a couple days and then I tried... Read more

I am not Even Sure if Its Freezing

There is a computer of a friend of mine. We took every single piece out and cleaned the dust on the pieces. After putting everything back together, it doesn't boot up properly. I see the bios screen than it asks me if where to boot, I choose HDD option. Then windows xp asks me what type of start up i want to go with. I chose normal, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt but whatever i chose didn't matter, it didn't started up.

When loading with safe mode option, it always freezes while loading amdagp.xxx file. When loading with normal mode option, i see gray bar at the bottom progressing and when it gets fully gray, there suppose to be a windows logo but instead i get a black screen.

I thought it might be the hard drive damaged and replaced it with another hdd of mine which also has xp professional on it. But it had the same problem. What are the possibilities? What can be wrong? Computer is HP Pavilion XT928.

Thank you

You did actually re-install Windows 7 after formatting the hard disks yeah?

Your post isn't very clear, it would help those that can help you to know more. Why did you format it to begin with? What exactly did you do once you formatted it?

The more complete the information the easier it is for a member to provide you with assistance.

P.S. If you had formatted the hard disks during Windows 7 install, you wouldn't have any virus issues if it was a genuine disk.

Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive, and then restart the computer. Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive if you are prompted. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.Type: chkdsk /rIt's important to have a space before the "/".To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Someone said they fixed it by running msconfig, unchecking explorer.exe, restarting, then rechecking explorer.exe [at least thats how I read it.] When I run msconfig.exe I do not even see the words 'explorer.exe' to uncheck at all. If that is a way to actually fix this, could someone tell me where to uncheck? It's not under the startup tab or any tab for that matter.

A:My Documents boots, Explorer.exe doesn't.

Hi -

"Explorer.exe" is probably in thousands of registry keys in English, binary and hex form. Not knowing how Explorer got this way makes finding a fix all that more difficult. I have a feeling that you may have done additional damage with the registry cleaner(s). I will just say that you really never need to "clean" the registry unless instructed to do so. They are not errors that were "fixed", rather lost file associations that account for about 0.1% of the total registry keys.

If the registry cleaning was not to long ago, it is likely that you still have a system restore point on hand and can restore the system back to that time. I suggest that you do so. Then run the system file checker/ repair utility - SFC and see if it helps with Explorer.

START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select run as Administrator | the black command prompt ("DOS") screen will appear | type the following:

sfc /scannow
Upon completion re-boot to allow files in use to be repaired.

Okay, I've fiddled with this for a while now, a couple days ago when I turned on the computer I would get an error message saying how system/config (something like that) was corrupt. I then googled this and did not really find a solution for it. Almost all of the people that encountered this problem did not know where the source of the problem was. I figure I would give reformatting a shot. After formatting, I figure that I can now use my computer with no worries about more problems but then now different problems appeared.

When I turn on the computer sometimes it would boot up nicely with no problems at all but sometimes it would not boot. The computer hangs right before the windows xp flag appears with the loading bar under it. What I see instead is a different loading bar (DOS style) that spans the entire width of my screen. I thought maybe this was just a problem with my installation of XP, so then I go and boot into my Ubuntu installation (I use grub bootloader and the two OS's are on their own partitions on the same physical drive) and the Ubuntu freezes at the loading screen as well. I went through testing each component of my computer afterwards.

I figure that my processor should be okay since I managed to get this far while loading the computer (I could be totally wrong on this part). I also tested the RAM with memtest86+ that was on the Ubuntu disc. I finished one pass with no errors so I guess the memory is okay. The graphics card should also be okay si... Read more

No matter what browser we use - Firefox, Seamonkey or IE, many websites load and use only 1/2 of the screen. Some of these are very popular, widely used sites such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Hot Air.

However, on many other websites, the widescreen works perfectly - for instance, both The Drudge Report, Google Reader work perfectly and fill the entire screen. Which makes this difficult to diagnose.

We downloaded the latest driver for the monitor earlier today, rebooted - but the problem remains.

Does anyone have a fix?

Hi have Windows XP 64 bit installed and am trying to update the system. When I goto windows update I receive the following error:

[Error number: 0x8009200D]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

There were a few fixes I tried, but none worked.
The first one:

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 mssip32.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll

Second one involved disabling cryptsvc, renaming the catroot2 folder an reenabling cryptsvc.

None worked.. anyone have any ideas?

A:Windows Update Doesn't Work

So I was finally able to update once... After a reboot it worked allowing me to actually load the windowsupdate site. I downloaded the 6 or so patches it had available for xp64 pro and then rebooted to install.

When I booted up again afterwards it did not work, giving me the above errors again. Weird! Anyway, eventually it again worked again (It seemed random, I didnt do anything different that I could tell)

But this time, it said there were no updates to download. So my question is now, Is there a Service Pack 2 update for Wnidows XP Pro 64bit? If so it does not show up on the list.. if there isin't... is the 64bit version vulnerable or does it have those upgrades built in elsewhere?

Anyone here familar with the 64bit xp pro?

p.s. Oh yea, it has now stopped letting me onto windowsupdate again. Showing those above errors... anyone have an idea on those either? Heh I'm stumped.

Hey all,

As my first post to this forum, I first want to say hi, my name is Jared and I am running Windows 7 Pre-release 6801 that some select people got ahold of during PDC08. I find it funny since it is a pre-release beta and I thought I would start by testing it with microsofts own virus protection (I don't usually use it). But low and behold it wouldn't even install due to not being able to recognize the os. So I was able to install avast, I have to say though. Windows 7 is better then vista I have to say. Other then the mild compatibility issues with some programs.

I hope they do a public beta for Windows 7 soon so I can take part soon.

A:OneCare doesn't work with Windows 7. LoL

I've been told the Live 3 Beta includes OneCare for the 32-bit version, but I can't confirm it. (Avalable from Downloads - Windows Live)

I can confirm it's not there yet for the 64-bit version.

Hey all at TSF!

I have been having trouble safely shutting down my Windows XP. This issue started after I formatted my computer. When I click Start > Shutdown, the hourglass symbol displays and I can't do anything but force my computer to shutdown by pressing and holding the power button. Since this wasn't going to work, I created a shutdown shortcut on my desktop. When I click it, everything works fine and it begins to shutdown my computer. However, when it gets to the "Windows is shutting down" screen, it just hangs there forever. I have to force shutdown it or else it won't shutdown.

I really want to get this fixed, and I thank you all in advance.

A:Windows XP Shutdown Doesn't Work

Well you said you "formated" your computer. By that I assume that you reinstalled XP.

Did you install the motherboard (chipset) drivers ?

Is this a desktop or a laptop ?

Post make & model of the computer. (Dell, Gateway, whatever...)

Problems shutting down are either hardware/driver issues or programs that will not shut down like they are supposed to. Sometimes the programs that won't shut down are malware (viruses, etc...) which causes me to wonder why the computer was "reformated" in the first place.

Were you infected before ? You might still be infected. Did you do a low-level format prior to reinstalling XP ?

Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager

click "show hidden devices" and report all flagged devices. Uninstall all flagged devices and report any that do not reinstall normally.

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer

Look up under "Applications" and "System" for error messages that take place during shut-down. Post the full text of each individual error message (not just the label, I want the full description). Event Viewer has a clipboard you can copy this text to, and then paste it somewhere, like in your next post.

I don't know why MS would put a program on an OS that will not even work. I went to use it for the first time to burn 3 video files, and I could only get to the first screen, and if I clicked next, the program crashes.

Doesn't even say what was wrong, just said it encountered a problem, and searching for a solution (surprise, surprise, no solution is found). How do I get this to work?

Hi.So i just bought myself Y500 and second gpu doesn't work. It doesn't get hot and thus there is no airflow from the fan of it. I updated my BIOS and have the latest Nvidia drivers. SLI is enabled in the settings.I tried these settings in the nvidia control panel because someone had similar problem and was advised to do this:SLI rendering mode --> Force alternate frame rendering 1 (and/or 2) Turning vsync offPower management --> prefer maximum performanceDidn't help.I downloaded nvidia inspector and with changing those settings it looked like that the second gpu got active, but still it did not show any activity in the nvidia gpu activity window. However SLI visual indicator shows that both gpu's are active. I guess they are but do not work properly. I tried to play Trials Fusion and it became unplayable with fps around 20. On the original settings works ok but only on one GT 650m gpu.I hope the solution is not downgrading to Windows 8, since someone from Lenovo said that Windows 10 is not supported by Lenovo for Y500. Still someone wrote that Win10 works fine on Y500. What could i do get my rig working properly? Please share your knowledge that might help me =)Thanks in advance.?

Also did the VGA BIOS update. First i thought it's only for win8 users... didn't solve my problem.

The last time an update was installed was in January..since the next time i was offered an update, Windows Update or any of the programs that use windows update fail to update. Also i can't download the updates manually..standalone msu installers also dont work.. windows defender, IE8 installations also fail to update. And unfortunately i have deleted the recent system restore checkpoints before i knew about this problem.
Windows Update gives error 80070002, i have tried the "solution" to delete temp update files, and all other solutions i could find on the internet. Windows defender gives the same error. The updates can be downloaded from windows update, but cannot be download (not even manually in .msu package)
I also lost many shortcut files of MS Office (the icon turned white and they lost their target). Some shortcuts of 3rd party programs are also lost (which were supposed to be in c:\windows\installer\blabla\

I have Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1 (SP1 came with the ssytem when i bought it). This is very weird. I have no other choice than to reformat drive and use recovery disk. Please help.

I purchased a Gateway desktop with Win7 installed, but no installation disc. When I try to run Windows Update, it takes me to the site, but the shield is X'd out, and it tells me the service is not running, although in fact it is. I have seen others reporting this same problem, at sites all over the Internet, and have seen about a dozen suggested solutions, none of which works for me (or for a lot of other people). Any advice on this, apart from waiting for Microsoft to fix it (and deliver the fix in some way other than WU)?

Hello everyone,

I've browsed everywhere on the net, and all I find is people saying that Adobe creative suite CS4 works on Windows 7 x64. Well, it does, except one part. Flash CS4!

I was wondering if anyone found a work around to this? I have already tried running in XP compatibility mode, and no luck.

I really don't want to use the x86 version of windows 7 as I'll lose 1gb of ram in the process, and definitly don't want to dual boot, as i'm usually just doing things on my computer, and randomly see my flash icon, and decide I wanna do a little programming in Actionscript for a half hour or so.

Yes, I know I can get Flex, or another IDE, however, I like the convience of in Flash CS4, as inferior as it may be to Flex, of hitting ctrl enter, and my program is compiled, and running in front of my face instantly.

I generally compile once every 2 mins to test changes I make while programming, so the Flash CS4 is best for me as I'm a fairly new programmer, and I only know actionscript 3 as of right now.

Has anyone been in a similiar situation, or gotten flash CS4 to work on the 64 bit version of windows 7? TBH i don't even know if flex works on windows 7, i've never tried it, lol but again, the problem with me enjoying instant compiles is why I'm trying to get Flash CS4 to work in the first place, so it really doesn't matter if flex works or not.

Anyway, thanks for any help

I am running Windows 7 x64 on my Asus G73JH laptop.

I already performed a clean reinstall in the hopes of fixing this problem but to no avail.

So my issue is when I open Windows Update and click on the check for updates button it does one of two things. It either just flashes to the checking for updates loading screen and then returns to normal, or gives me an error stating that the Windows Update service is not running despite it really being up.

I have tried the Windows Fixits and many other solutions such as deleting certain folders and restarting the service but none have worked so far.

Dear reader,

First of all, thanks for having a look at my problem and help.
Since two days ago I installed Windows 8 Pro on my PC.
Previously I was running on Windows 7 Ultimate.

Since the installation of Windows 8 I wanted to use the 'Store' app
on the Start screen, but till now, it doesn't work! (I activated the PC and
confirmed as trust PC at Microsoft Accounts with my mobile phone)

But it doesn't help. When I click on the Store app, it never opens. I see
the App icon making the click move when you press on it, but that's all, no error message,
or window appears why it doesn't open. I also tried with other accounts on my PC but
with the same result.

I hope anyone can help me, because I want to use it offcourse.
Thanks for your help, goodevening!

Welcome to Eight Forums. Good to have you.

Try SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8[1]=Performance Maintenance. A new feature in 8.

Please let us know if that works.

I got this laptop in 2014 (It had windows 8 or 8.1 on it at the time ofc) Then I upgraded to windows 10 and for about a year it was fine but then it broke for unrelated reasons. Not hardware reasons though. And I forgot about it, then I decided to install Linux mint to it and it worked fine. Then I decide to go back to windows 10 and the touchpad didn't work. So I went to linux again. Repeat x5 and now I'm at #6 and it still doesn't work! And it works on linux perfectly!

I have a small problem with a recently downloaded .MSI file. Whenever I try to run it, I first get a window that says: ''Windows Installer is preparing setup'', as expected.
Afterwards, the window closes and nothing happens. No error messages or installation, just nothing.

I tried redownloading, but with the same result. However, when I try to remove the file, I get an error that I can't, because it's opened in Windows Installer.

I remember having the same problem with an older laptop with a different installation file, but after a few weeks it suddenly just worked.
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this (other than just wait )?

A:Windows Installer doesn't work

Are you using MucAfee or one of the paid bloatware AV's? Replace with Microsoft Security Essentials

Try System Restore to a point before the problem occurred.

Try a Clean Boot: in msconfig>Startup uncheck everything (add back in AV later), then in msconfig>Services choose Hide All MS Services then uncheck all again. After reboots check back for any which snuck back in and turn them off in Program Prefs or Uninstall.

Try the Windows Installer Fix from this list #94: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Run SFC -SCANNOW Command

Next try a Repair Install..
