Explorer crashes/restarts when jpegs are opened

Q: Explorer crashes/restarts when jpegs are opened

I have recently had an issue with my computer...when I open my picture files, Explorer "cannot open, file corrupted" & "encountered a problem" and restarts. I have run spyware/malware programs and can find nothing wrong in the logs. What should I be looking for? Is my flash player needing an update, or a newer service pack for Microsoft needed? I am not I.T. savy and am looking for feedback.

Thanks very much!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

I have Windows XP [Home edition] with SP2, which came already installed when I purchased the laptop.I have a recovery disc,but it appears if I want to run it,I will lose everything on my HD.

something to do with the thumbnail feature in PSP, disabling it seemed to work for those who had it.

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

I first noticed that explorer would crash a few weeks ago after I stumbled across an infected .wmf file while surfing the net. I was logged in under my limited account and my anti-virus detected the .wmf but it could not take action, I believe due to the fact I use system restore. I finally was able to delete the .wmf after which I ran several different scans and could not detect anything except Microsoft (R) HTML Application host had been altered (24,576 bytes to 24,064 bytes), so I replaced the file (note: explorer was already crashing before this point). The only time it seems to crash is once in a while when I click on My Document, Control Panel, My Pictures etc...

Hi this just started happening today. I'm not sure what happened to trigger it. I have run virus scan and it didn't found any infected files.

Explorer.exe will load when my machine starts up. About every 5-10 seconds, it will close, meaning my desktop blinks off. Another 10 seconds later (or around that) explorer.exe will start again and my desktop will come back.

Eventually, it stops trying to load and the desktop stays off. I can go to task manager and run explorer.exe to repeat the process of having explorer.exe run, stop, run, etc.

I don't receive any error messages when this happens.

This machine has the latest Microsoft updates incl service pack 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

When Firefox is closed, Explorer continues to crash and restart, almost every 30-35 seconds. I have Windows 8.1 up to date, with all the latest updates, FireFox is up to date. As of writting this post, Windows Explorer has crashed and restarted (5) times.

My explorer.exe constantly crashes and restarts; however, when I go into safe mode it works perfectly which means it is a driver problem. So I began to use the app, DriverView, to look at all the drivers I have and sure enough I find 3 very suspicious files that are most likely the cause to my problem.They looked suspicious because their file type was listed as unknown and their description was blank.the three files were:dump_dumpata.sysdump_dumpfve.sysdump_msahci.sysThey are said to be located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers but when I looked there i couldn't find them. I tried scanning for viruses in normal and safe mode using AVG but I found nothing. I then uninstalled AVG and installed Avira. I also scanned in normal and safe mode using Avira but I still found nothing. The virus blockers i used also were updated. For some reason I just can't findi them. Hello,

So for the past month or so, explorer.exe has been crashing continuously. It happens on several occasions...

-Most notable when I first boot up Windows 7, it crashes and restarts in an assiduous manner, for maybe 10-15 times until it stops suddenly and starts working again

-When accessing files which force explorer to open, e.g. when I open a document, open the 'My Downloads' folder, and such locations (the crashing and restarting scenario occurs in every situation)

I haven't found a solution as of yet. I even tried ending the process in Task Manager and running it again... with the result of it continuing to freeze and restart even after I run it form Task Manager, until as usual, it suddenly stops crashing and starts working again.

Is there any possible solution to this which doesn't involve any type of System Restore/OS wipe?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. PC is defragged, registry and junk files cleaned using CCleaner and Disk Cleanup, issue still persists. SpyBotS&D cannot detect any malware, and ESET NOD32 cannot detect any viruses or infections either.

A:explorer.exe crashes and restarts when certain actions are performed

This is usualy caused by a bad file filter installed in explorer. And you can usualy trace it down to what type by noticing what files are in the folders you are opening.

Unless this happens at the default "libraries" or "Computer" entries as well...

Can you shed any light on where it does and maybe does not crash?

Did you install anything (Codecs, Office programs etc) just before this started?

A:Problem- Right click on anything and explorer crashes and restarts

Hello Dave84 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You can start up the System File Checker tool at the Start>Run command line. (refer to image attached)

That won't require any right clicking on anything. You could even add the Takeownership option to the right click menu but will need to first repair the present Windows installation since this sounds like one or more system files are corrupted.

The other thought on this is a possible malware infection leaving you with corrupted files like the explorer.exe sheil file used by Windows Explorer as well as the Computer desktop icon for browsing drives.

Hello,

After days of troubleshooting via trying resolution methods from various forums, I finally have to submit a help topic, because I am out of ideas short of re-installing windows.

explorer.exe crashes whenever I do one of the following items:
- Right click on desktop to see display properties; the right-click menu never comes up; explorer just crashes. (I can get to the display properties fine through control panel.)
- Open up Start/Programs and enter an application sub-menu. Explorer doesn't crash until the sub menu opens, sometimes instantly, sometimes in a few seconds.
- Hovering over an icon on my desktop. Explorer does not crash when hovering over shortcuts, only when I hover over a file sitting on the desktop.
- Trying to open My Computer. A window opens up and the flashlight appears momentarily, then explorer crashes, which also closes the window.
- Trying to browse files via Start/Run or through Task Manager. Explorer crashes after several seconds, regardless of which drive or directory I am browsing. There may be an additional pattern there too as the time it takes explorer to die varies, but I have yet to determine a pattern if there is one. For Start/Run, the window closes, for task manager, sometimes the window freezes when explorer crashes and restarts, and the task manager icon in the task bar never goes away until I pass over it with my mouse.
- Trying to open up administrative tools from the control panel. Other controal panel options ... Read more

I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

A:Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

Hello,

Explorer intermittently crashes for some reason and it gets annoying. This is not Windows Internet Explorer, it is Windows Explorer. I'll be copying or moving files typically, or dbl click on a movie or picture file to launch it. It pops up a dialog saying explorer needs to be restarted. When I clik on it it restarts the desktop. What could be causing this?

Thanks

Hi,

I have Windows 8.1 running on my Acer Aspire V3-772G. Windows explorer crashes randomly, and restarts instantly. Various solutions on the internet are for problems where explorer crashes due to a specific task such as accessing some programs. In my case, it is just random and occurs once in a while. Help me out!

Thanks in advance!

Hi. Today morning I started my PC and just after the start up Windows Explorer crashed and restarted and then did (and does) the same every 10-15 seconds. I googled the problem and did following steps (not in the same order as below) which didn't resolve the issue:

- restarted few times and switched off PC completely;
- tried to fix registry with Vit Registry Fix;
- did SFC /SCANNOW and it finished with information that some issues couldn't be fixed;
- ran Malwerbytes with no malware found;
- did a full Kaspersky Internet Security scan with no viruses found;
- did a clean boot (all non-windows services were not used) and it still crashed;
- did a diagnostic start up (so only basic windows services were used) and it helped;
- I wanted to do a system restore but Windows doesn't have data on any restores, meaning I probably haven't started the service (doesn't it make it automatically?);

Other info:
- system works fine in Safe Mode and diagnostic start up, thus eliminating issue with external applications;
- when in normal mode and crashing I looked at processes appearing and disappearing and found out that at the crash process the file dllhost.exe disappears then and shortly after appears back (it may or may not be relevant);
- I didn't do any major updates yesterday (only updated Steam platform and installed one new game);
- I can't do perfmon /report as in Safe mode it doesn't display anything and in normal mode I don't have enough time to start the applicati... Read more

A:Windows explorer crashes (and restarts) on system start-up.

Just an update - based on my experience with "fixing" the system, I've decided to back up the data and make a fresh installation (no point in loosing more time on trying to resolve the issue but just spend the time on new system and at least enjoy a faster Windows for some time). Funny though that a year ago I had to do the same due to some dll corrupt file (it was much worse then). I really love Microsoft!

P.S. Thanks for reading this thread, if you think you may add something (so in the future if someone looks for info on how to fix it) feel free to add some advice.

Welcome!

How long has this been going on? You may want to try a system restore.

You may also want to do a repair install.

Since recent XP re-install (now with service pack 3), previously saved Corel Draw 11 files that include JPEGs fail to open fully before crashing the program. I can open files that don't contain JPEGs, but the program will also crash when I import a JPEG.

I've removed and re-installed Corel Draw 11, updated it with service pack 2,all to no avail. All my files were successfully created in XP (then with SP2, but still couldn't open them before I loaded SP3) prior to this re-install and I have not experienced this issue previously.

In what may be a related issue, I cannot re-install an isometric tool plug-in for Corel Draw called EZMetrics. This also ran OK prior to XP re-install. When I double click the setup .exe I get this error message 'Unable to open Setup Data File, Exiting....'

This leaves me somewhat scratching my head for answers and I would be most grateful if there is someone out there who may shed some light on a possible fix. There are many hours of work in these Corel files that I'm a little concerened that I may lose.

When i insert a CD or DVD of any kind, it either just restarts or some times an error comes up and THEN it re-starts (I think the error is only linked to running *.exe ie; installing games).

This is one of the errors, i looked around on the net and i think its different depending what program it is, but the issue is the same....

i also attached it in case it don't show up.

I took off "Automatically restart". but all that happens is, all my programs start crashing 1 by 1 and it never loads the *.dll files from the windows XP CD, even if i keep pressing "retry", then after a bit of clicking retry, the 'blue screen of death comes up' so i just have to restart PC anyway...

I think i could do a windows repair through the boot menu using the windows CD. but the recovery console keeps asking me for a password and it does not exist... it did the same thing when i was downgrading from Vista, but i managed to sort it out through Regedit;

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole

but i tried changing the value again and it just didn't work this time...

sorry for long post... cheers for all the help.

Hi. . .

I suggest that you check the Event Viewer for clues. Note the time, then try to go into cmd again and if it re-boots check the event logs for that time and see what is there.

Hey there, new forum-goer here. I've had this issue start up relatively recently, and I haven't the foggiest what could be causing it. Basically, any action taken involving .jpg files will cause windows explorer to crash, showing the "checking for solution to problem" window, followed by "windows is restarting". I haven't seen this happen with .png, so it really does look to only be with that file type. The actions on jpgs that will cause it to crash include:

-right clicking them
-double clicking them
-having an explorer window open (say, a folder) containing about 2 or more jpegs
-hovering the cursor overtop of a jpeg for too long

like I said though, I have no idea what could be causing this. I've tried using alternate programs other than the default viewer to open jpegs with, I've tried doing registry checks and windows updates, and even tried starting the computer in safe mode, but it still happens. Anyone have any ideas on this? Next steps I should take in the process of fixing it?

Also, I've tried running sfc /scannow in comand, and afterwords it said "Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them". Though I'm not sure whether this is due to this jpeg issue or if that's related to a different problem I have of certain windows updates failing to install.

A:Jpegs causing explorer to crash

Okay. Do you have your .jpegs in thumbnail view? Try switching it to icon view. Sometimes Windows has problems with generating thumbnails causing Windows Explorer to crash. If you haven't, try it. In Windows Explorer --> Organise --> Folder and search options --> View --> Check 'always show icons, never thumbnails'.

Tell us if this works.

I have this little weird problem that comes and goes and it is just about starting to get on my nerves now. When i right-click to save an image from the web in Internet Explorer (v6), i choose 'save picture as' and i am presented *only*- with the option to save the image as a Bitmap, and the images filename does not appear only the name 'untitled'??? This happened within the space of a couple of hours of surfing when i was one minute able to save as jpgs and then the next minute i got this problem? I didnt even change any settings it just happened while surfing?

Now i did a bit of research and the only suggestion that i found was to clear you temporary internet files out because it may be a cache restriction. I tried this and then rebooted but it didnt solve the dilemma
I have also manually typed in the jpg extention which isnt much good because the files still save the same size as a BMP?

Any suggestions would be most welcome, no doubt some of you slueths have probably solved this one before.

I notice since upgrading to Windows 7, Explorer shows some quirky behaviour compared with the XP version.

My current irritation is when I open a folder containing (say) 500 jpegs that were in filename (ascending) sequence, the folder opens quite quickly and I can see the file icons, but I get a message 'Searching for items...' and a progress bar at the top of the window which takes up to a minute to complete. The end result is always the same... the files are now sorted into descending sequence.

It seems to be the case only for jpegs, only when sorted on filename, and only when 'Large Icons' were selected. Even then it only seems to display this behaviour when the folders contain a lot of files (maybe more than 200 jpegs).

And it doesn't seem to matter whether or not the folder has recently been opened.

I note that if I click on the 'X' next to the progress bar, to stop 'Loading', there isn't a problem.

The thumbnails have already been drawn, so what's going on during this process? And why the inversion?

Rod

A:Explorer - strange behaviour for folders of jpegs

You can either:

1) Click Names at the top of the Names column to change from an Ascending to a Descending sort order and vice versa.

Or:

2) Right-click the blank space in the right and choose Sort By>Name>Ascending/Descending.

To speed things up you can go to Organize>Folder & Search Options>View>Advanced Settings>Always Show Icons, Never Thumbnails>Apply>OK.

I've had this problem before, and I think it relates to an email that was downloaded that corrupts the .pst.

When we open the Outlook, it stays open for a short time, 1-2 seconds, then immediately crashes to desktop. I have tried the following

outlook.exe /safe
outlook.exe /resetoutlookbars
outlook.exe /F

My next attempt will be to run the scanpst program, but I don't expect that to return anything worthwhile. My guess is that there is an email at the top of the inbox that is corrupting something and until that email is removed, I can't do anything.

In the past I have had to create a new PST, but that is a pain in the butt having to download a couple years worth of emails again and losing calendar and contact information.

Thanks for help.

I am suddenly no longer able to open the My Recent Documents file without it crashing Explore. I can open the folder, but after about two or three seconds the hour glass displays and a message displays that Windows is closing this activity due to an error with the .exe file and is doing so to protect itself. I select OK and another box displays asking if I want to send a report to MS. I did and it also asked for additional information about my system so they could see a more clear snapshot of what was occurring when the "crash" happened. No responses yet. I am concerned that even though I am running the most current version of NAV with current virus definitions and MS Antispyware Beta something has infected my system. I accessed a file on the web about 30 minutes prior to this happening and when I accessed the file I got two messages that a virus was present. It did not look like NAV was posting the message and since the message included instruction to click on it to fix the problem I ignored that. I have scanned my system with AdAware using their most current definitions. Could not access Spybot S & D's site for their most current updates to scan my system. When I left home this morning, NAV was scanning again to see if anything is detected. I have not had time to check whether or not this problem is isolated or a true infestation. Does anyone know what could cause My Recent Documents to crash?

Thanks.

Hello. I've come across the strangest problem. I installed this new app and told the users to open it up and get familiar with it. The remote office has a VPN (point to point) and they access remote computers via RDP to open the app. One user told me that the app crashes on her when she opens it. The error is: unknown software exception 0x0000409
But when I use a computer to RDP into it, and log on as her, the app opens without a problem. The problem is duplicated as she tried to open that same app while RDP'ing into other computers that have the app. And it happens whether she's logged in as herself or another users. But again, I can remote into those computers from other computers and open the app fine (while either logged on as her or another user).
The problem continues even if booted to safe mode with networking. I've also thoroughly scanned for infections on the user's computer.
Now, while using RDP, if the processing happens on the remote computers (the computers hosting that app) why would the app's ability to run vary so much from being remotely opened from one computer to another?

Thanks in advance.

A:App run via Remote Desktop crashes when opened remotely from specific computer

It looks like it was a user profile problem. I created another user on that computer. I was able to use that profile to connect and ru the app. But it's still strange that a small problem on the computer being used to remotely connect would cause an application error on the remote computer (when all the processing happens on that remote computer).

Both problems started at the same time;

When I open firefox sometimes I can get to the start page, and other times it just crashes right away. When it does crash I get the option to send in a crash report and then restart. I see a flash of a new window opening, and then another crash report right away. On the times that I DO get to keep the start page open, trying to open anything (add-on page, new webpage, even sometimes just clicking the page) causes it to close and get a crash report. This happens in safe mode too, even after uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times.

The same time that started happening, my windows live messenger couldn't connect. At least I get some sort of message with that one: "Windows Live communications platform has stopped working". The only way I get to use it is to download another program that connects to all my messaging programs.

A few times I've gotten some message about HP Network Devices having a problem and closing, but searching for a solution online never fixes anything. If it happens again I'll post exactly what it says.

None of my other programs are having any problems, just these two.

If you need any more information please tell me, this has been happening over a period of months now, and I really just want to get it fixed.
