Windows automatically scrolls to the bottom when clicking down arrow

Q: Windows automatically scrolls to the bottom when clicking down arrow

I have a problem that bugs me and is very frustrating that has happened since I first had Windows 7 the year it was released officially (not release candidate) when clicking the down arrow rapidly in any window, the scrolling will scroll all by itself to the very bottom of the page or window! it does this about half way to the bottom of the page or window. I Googled the problem but nothing came up on Google. (just stuff about scrolling up and down automatically, but nothing about it scrolling to the bottom at a high rate of speed automatically) I tried using several different mice all with the same problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Perhaps I don't understand the question correctly. You state; "when clicking the down arrow rapidly in any window, the scrolling will scroll all by itself to the very bottom of the page or window!" that's appears to be contradictory. Could you please clarify?

I am having a problem when I try to view certain pages on Listia.com, an auction site where people list things for free and pay for them with credits they have earned. What happens is after you see an item you want to bid on and you click on that item to see further information and to bid, the page jumps to the bottom, I then have to wait for the page to load and then I can move the page back up using the scroll bar. It is very annoying. I have written them, but they don't know why it is doing this. My granddaughter also has a Listia account and she said she does not have this problem.

I am using Windows XP Home and IE7. Would appreciate any advice!

Dear BC community,Computer SetupWindows XPWindows OneCareMain Symptoms:(1) All programs, screens and dialog boxes exhibit this behavior: Once opened, they immediately roll to the bottom and then I am unable to get back to the top by any means (mouse clicking, scroll bar, page up).For example, when I navigate to the download page for HijackThis or Windows Defender, I am unable to download them, since their download links are not at the bottom of their pages, and thus are inaccessible.Another example: When I try to download AVG from ewido.net, I can't select "English" from the dialog box. The only choice is "Slovensky" because it is at the bottom of the dialog box.(I'm typing this from my husband's Notebook, which is not infected.)(2) Safe Mode is disabledWhen debugging problems in the past, I have successfully used F8 to initiate Safe Mode. I've started using the WMP 11, and I've grown to really like it, but there's something about it that's driving me batty.

I like to use the Library and pull out the Playlist on the right side, so I can just pull songs, albums, or entire artists out of the Library and into the Playlist (sort of like Amarok?). I've grown to REALLY like using the library like this, and I've grown to really like WMP 11 in general, but frequently whenever I pull something over to the playlist, the library will scroll down all the way to the bottom of the list.

So, if I'm creating a playlist with songs from, say, the Eagles, I'll pull the first song that I want over to the Playlist pane and the library will scroll allllllll the way to the bottom, so I have to scroll most of the way up to get back to E to find the next Eagles song I want to listen to. It's doing this in both Vista and XP. If it only happened once or twice it wouldn't be that big of a deal, but it happens constantly and it's really annoying. Is there any way to fix that?

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi guys, I'm not sure what the problem is, but whenever there is a drop down option and I select an option, my computer automatically scrolls to the top of the drop down as if the up key was held down on my keyboard.

It even happens when the keyboard is unplugged?

I'm running Windows 7 64 Bit, how can I fix this issue? It's sort of been on and off for the past few days.

It also occurs when I open a folder in the start menu, when I click the folder the start menu just scrolls to the top and opens the top folder.

My mouse scrolls to the end of the page automatically. Even if drag the scroll bar up the computer pushes it back down. In file explorer the last file/folder gets automatically selected so I'm not able to open any other file. The problem lasts for a few minutes then it comes back again after some time.

Its not a hardware issue. It happen regardless of whether I use mouse or touch pad. I scanned with BitDefender and MalwareBytes AntiMalware. Neither of them could solve the issue. I restored to a previous point and the problem persists.

eg, when I open my facebook, it keeps scrolling down through my news feed without stopping loading new stuff and keeps going down. and If i press my windows key iam able to stop it momentarily and i can scroll upwards and when I remove my finger it starts scrolling down again.Help.

I came across this issue on multiple of my machines. usually reading webpage which is fairly long so have to scroll multiple times to get to bottom. I would scroll down and stop where I want it to stop, when it gets there, it will move either a bit up, or a bit down by itself and that frustrates me.

I think problem resides in firefox and not other browser but I could be wrong.

Ive found a solution which may or may not work but so far it's been pretty good. start -> search -> type in mouse. go to pointer options tab and uncheck the box which says "enhance pointer precision" and seems to do the trick.

Bad driver.  Also do you have your laptop setup to disable the Touchpad, when you plug in a mouse, or is it still enabled while a mouse is plugged in?  Suggest uninstalling the Touchpad device, in Device Manager, then let Windows reinstall.  If it still exhibits the same behavior, then most likely the sensor pad is screwed up, and you may need to contact Samsung to have the unit serviced.

Hey goutham794!

Just because it happens whether you use the touchpad or a mouse doesn't mean that it isn't a hardware problem. The touchpad is enabled when you are using the mouse unless you specifically disable it. However simply plugging in a mouse does not disable the touchpad.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Dell Inspiron 1545. I have had this laptop approximately 3.5 years and have never had a problem until we returned from vacation a few weeks ago. I shut down my perfectly working computer and came back to beeping and auto-scroll. I have run virus scanners, registry cleaners, driver scanners, and pc cleaners and have yet to fix this problem. There is no pattern to the beeping, It will beep anywhere from 2-5 times at the Dell logo screen and then continually for approximately 100+ beeps at the Windows start screen before booting normally. My screen auto scrolls in all browsers as well as my email. I use Chrome and Thunderbird. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I have a Dell laptop that I bought a couple of months ago. From the beginning, when the mouse arrow comes in contact with a link, it automatically opens that link. This affects me when I'm scrolling through a bunch of links or a forum because it is constantly opening more tabs. I would like to change it to "normal" when a left click is required to open a link.

Any ideas??

Greetings, I've had an XPS 9550 since mid January.  Was an Apple guy for a decade but wanted to get into gaming.  While I'm having to get used to video_scheduler crashing my computer all the time and the audio jack isn't plug and play all the time, it's a good computer.
A month ago the touchpad started to rise so that I can now get a finder nails underneath and the bottom corners are no longer clicking.  I can still click near the white line so I'm guessing there is just dirt.  Is this a common problem?

Normally when selecting text in Word, notepad, etc., holding down Ctrl+Shift+Right (or Left) arrow key will automatically advance the cursor to expand the selected text a full word at a time.  However the shortcut currently only works to highlight one word at a time, i.e. I have to re-press the arrow key for each word. The Shift+arrow and Ctrl+arrow both advance automatically a single letter at a time just fine, its just the three keys together that doesn't work the way it should.  And the weird thing is, it's only a problem with the left Ctrl+Shift on the keyboard, the right hand Ctrl+Shift+Arrow combo works fine.  The three key combo also works fine on-screen keyboard.  Have you heard of this and do you know how I can fix it?  Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem. I press the UP ARROW key once the laptop completes booting. This solved the down key lock problem. I started hearing the beep sounds when I upgraded to windows 10. When I went back to windows 7 the beeping stopped during boot up but the down key problem exists. I am thinking of downgrading to XP to see if the noise problem and the keyboard works. I hope its not due to my ram upgrade.

However, I do believe that it is an error in construction and this auto-untightening should not happen.

It does multiple screws so far and my laptop is missing 6 screws so far, with others retightening or saved by tape.

Hi I have been having this problem for a while.

it only effects certain programs and it dosn't always happen but any way...

sometimes in AIM the cursor moves automatically to the left. while in Photoshop and Sony Vegas the bottom scroll bar movies to the left. i am assuming because they are equally moving in the same direction they are the same problem.

I found that if i minimize and resize the AIM window that it temporarily makes the problem go away so that i am not typing backwards but it is starting to be cumbersome and time wasting and i am just getting tired of it.

Minimizing however dosn't help or make the problem go away in Photoshop or Vegas. I have been dealing with it for a while but now that i am using photshop more and need to use the zoom tool and move the window around with the hand tool for class projects i need to resolve this issue. i have googled to no avail. so i am hoping someone can help me.

Windows 7 Pro 64. MS Office Pro Plus 2010.
Today I noticed a few lines of random symbols characters at the bottom of a Word doc where I working near the end of the doc. So, I deleted the file and replaced it with a backup that I made the live version. Shortly after, while typing in that newly
live version, also near the end of the doc but a quarter page of text existing below my cursor position, I paused to read and I actually watched as a new, shorter string of random symbol characters rapidly typed itself at the end of the document.
I restored from an image backup from about four days ago, opened the same doc, left it sitting idle with the cursor in the middle of text, then I worked in a different app, and when I went back to check it one random symbol character had been typed at the
end of the document.

Hi,
I am getting this problem from last few months.

Here are the symptoms in detail:

1. When icons are clicked, they are asked to be deleted. A pop-up window appears multiple times, maybe 20-50 times, asking if you want to delete a the particular icon you clicked. the obvious option would be "no", so you click no multiple times as well. I sometimes use task manager to just close all of them at one go.

2. When I do open the task bar, whatever I click on that, even without clicking end process, is automatically closed. With processes, it asks to end process immediately. But when I do try to end that particular process, another window pops-up saying error.

3. In any program that I use, say microsoft word or excel, it auto-deletes wherever the cursor goes. Say you have one line on an word file, one sentence, if your click in the middle of the sentence, it autodeletes everything that comes after.

4. I use Autocad and that delete thing is also there. The moment I click on any drawing, it automatically deletes it without any command.

5. Lastly, in browsers, when I type anything into the address box, even to search, it's fine. However, when I try to type in the search box, there every letter will have a space, or maybe even more.

This is really annoying. I've tried malwarebytes, microsoft security essentials, etc., all listed above, none worked. What did happen is it worked with Malwarebytes for a while (I had to clean everytime I used my computer). But af... Read more

Today when I started up my computer it seemed fine until I went on the internet. I use FF but IE had the same problems when testing. It would start right clicking randomly all the time, only when online.

I ran a hijackthis scan and noticed it had something like.. internet, proxy= xx.xx.xxx.xx . I did a whois on the IP and it was coming from turkey!
I fixed that problem as I never setup any proxy and it seemed to remove the right clicking problem, however I am not 100% sure it is gone or if it will be back after a restart so I wanted to post this while I can without the constant right clicking making it impossible.

Here is my DSS log (followed the 5 steps system) hopefully I can get all my laptop issues fixed before something serious happens again.

A:DSS/HIJACK log. Computer was automatically right clicking, not sure where came from.

Still looking for some assistance please. I am a webmaster and everyday I am a little weary to enter my passwords (even though I use roboform). I just want to clear my computer of any potential threats, especially after that proxy/hijack from turkey issue!

Thank you, any help is greatly appreciated.

Today I noticed that when I select text it automatically deselects just after I select it. Then in Outlook I clicked on an email ONE time and the entire email opened in a new window. I know you can only open an email in a new window if you double click.

Both the selecting text and email problem only happen if I try to click a few times in a row.

This mouse is only a few months old.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium.

I find this very strange as this just started happening today.

Thanks.

A:Solved: Mouse automatically double clicking

What kind of mouse is it? I had the same problem with a Labtech optical. My technical son told me it was and internal hardware problem and there was no way to fix it. - But that was just the Labtech, before you trash it!

I routinely prefer to open a web page link in a new browser window. To do so I have been right-clicking the link and selecting, "open in a new window".

I have looked in both IE help and Windows help for a way to select a setting so that this function can be done automatically, without my right-clicking and checking each time, but I have been unable to find such an option.

Would anyone know if such an automatic option setting exists, or is the only option to manually select a new page each time ?

A:Automatically open a new browser window on clicking links?

I found these tips...they seem to be the most common fixes.

Quote:

The Solution

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Select Tools from the menu bar.
3. Click Internet Options.
4. Click the Advanced tab.
5. Uncheck Reuse Windows For Launching Shortcuts (under Browsing).
6. Click OK.

OR

Advanced users may edit the Windows registry to disable the default behavior of opening links in existing windows by following these steps:

1. Click Start | Run, typing regedit, and clicking OK.
2. Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main key.
3. Locate the AllowWindowReuse value. If the AllowWindowReuse value does not exist, create a DWORD value with that name by clicking Edit | New | Key | DWORD Value.
4. Specify a DWORD value of 0.
5. Click File | Exit and reboot the system.

Note: Editing the registry is risky, so be sure you have a verified backup before making any changes.

However, neither one of them works for me, darn it. Maybe you'll get lucky though. Using the shift key+link sometimes works.

Basically the title says it. I figured I must have some kind of malware or something because whenever i click on any link or anything like that, i get redirected to stupid ads and useless webpages.
Basically, when i click, the page changes and at first it loads the page, though nothing actually shows up, its just blank, then it will suddenly start loading the ad page. VERY annoying.

Please help?

When clicked from two different locations (the Task Bar and the Desktop), icons that have legitimate URLs will not automatically open and display in the default Firefox browser. To test, I have changed the default browser to IE, but the same thing happens, nothing: there is a momentary hourglass appearance but no webpage is displayed. Firefox is listed as the Default Browser for all other extensions (.com, .htm, .html. etc.), yet no webpage appears when links are clicked outside of the browser itself.

Links do appear as webpages if they are 1) copy and pasted into the browser's address bar or 2) clicked within the browser.

Since this has previously worked successfully, I surely did something wrong. Woe is me. Where to start...?

A:Clicking on Links Does Not Automatically Open Default Browser

Go into default programs and double check. Then go into firefoxes setting and check it is the default program. The try opening it again. If that doesnt work consider trying with a new link. Or go into windows explorer and write google in the top bar. This should also open the default program as a check

Hello, and welcome to TSF.

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. The logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Hello everyone! I recently got a 11 inch Yoga and although I'm liking it so far, the right shift key is also bothering me. I tried remapping the keyboard using KeyTweak first, uninstalled it, then SharpKeys. Although both do solve switching the keys around, both also lose the ability to scroll up continuously by pressing and holding the newly-mapped up-arrow key. It just scrolls up one line at a time, or moves the cursor up one line at a time, and so forth. Do I need to do something extra to make this work? Although I know it might seems such a little thing to complain about, I just like my things to work like they're supposed to  Unfortunately, if I can't get this to work, this might be a return...

Hello, I recently downloaded hijackthis.exe from this url http://www.sherrylynn.us/privacypolicy.htm I installed it and ran it. Since I already had adaware & spybot and mcafee antivirus and really didn't have much spyware so I decided to run hijackthis. After the report, I read several suggestions that said something about 'extra buttons' so I so stupidly removed those extra button things. It was not until I removed hijackthis that I noticed that my windows screens would scroll on its own up & down histerically. I guess my windows shell needed those extra buttons because now I don't know how to fix this issue. Can someone please help me with this annoying problem?

Windows Explorer scrolls the wrong way. In the left panel, when I click on the + sign to expand a folder to show its subfolders, Windows Explorer scrolls the selected main folder to the bottom of the panel. I then have to scroll the expanded list of subfolders up the screen so I can see it. This happens most, but not all, of the time. Same behavior on my desktop and laptop computers.

How can I keep Windows Explorer from scrolling the selected folder to the bottom of the panel? I would prefer to have the expanded folder at the top of the panel.

Thanks.

Hi, I was layers into an digital art piece on Photoshop, and was drawing just fine. Since it was getting late, I was shut off for the night and pick up in the morning. Since there was an "Update and Shut Down" option instead of just shut down, I let it update and went to bed. When I turned my laptop back on, the Windows Update messed up the pen! Instead of me simply drawing, the pen scrolls/pans around the screen.I tried doing a whole reset, but it didn't work, the pen was still wonky. If I want to even draw with the pen, I have to hold it down then keep it on the screen. So multiple lines (like if I wanted to draw hair strokes) isn't going to happen. Someone please help. It's been over a week and no change/new updates.

I'm using Windows 7 SP1, recently clean installed. The only non-Windows processes I have running in the background are DropBox and the 2 Apple iPod services.

When I use the Start Menu search box to search indexed files, it works fine. But when I click the "See more results" button at the bottom, which should open up a full search window, it opens up but *immediately* redirects the window to the top item in the tree hierarchy, which in this case is "Favorites." If I click "back" in explorer, I get my search results - but this is annoying.

Additional info: when I click the "Windows Explorer" link from the start menu, I hear the navigation "click" sound every time I open it, as if it's redirecting as soon as I open it. This does *not* happen when I open explorer with the Win+E key combo.

Any idea what's causing this? Thanks much in advance for your ideas.

Reposted with more descriptive title:

Dear Forum goers,

Since rebooting today, my mouse and keyboard do not fully work. After start up, the mouse tracks but does not register clicks. The keyboard's windows key works and ctrl-alt-delete will bring up task manager, but I cannot select an icon by pressing the first letter; I cannot hit up or down arrows to navigate the start menu; I can't do anything but hard restart my computer.

Doing some initial research, the forums lead me to believe I had a driver problem. I started in safe mode, both the keyboard and mouse worked (keyboard works fine in BIOS). I uninstalled both drivers and restarted to find the exact same issue.

I had just plugged in my router (trying to connect another computer to the modem) and restarted my computer to attempt to detect the internet. I had no installed anything on my computer since last week. I had been attempting to run some sketchy programs that I had first run thru my virus checker (Norton Internet Security 2007 suite, fully updated). I suspect one of the two exes that passed the norton scan (so they were not promptly deleted) may have done this. I don't think I had restarted until now.

I am running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. I had searched the internet for about an hour before posting, not finding any similar issues. Does anyone have an idea of how to fix this? I'd even take a proper keyword search for this issue. I've been using mouse + keyboard unrespons... Read more
