Solved: Visual C# Serial Port - Semaphore Timeout

Q: Solved: Visual C# Serial Port - Semaphore Timeout

I am trying to connect to a serial device. The sp.Open() method throws these two exceptions in the Output window:

The semaphore timeout period has expired
A first chance exception of type 'System.IO.IOException' occurred in System.dll

What's going on here? I'm running Windows 7, and using the exact same code that was already tested and worked perfectly on Windows XP. No code changed, and the hardware is identical - just the OS changed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greetings,

My environment is: Win'7, Visual Studio 2010, C#

There is another message on these forums with almost exactly the same title. It's closed, so I couldn't post there.

I'm getting that exact same response from Win'7 in a try /catch scheme.

i.e., "...The semaphore timeout period has expired..."

I am quite confident that the serial port is really there, as he will open and will transfer data from time to time.

It's the whims of the hardware that have me so confused.

The exact same code worked perfectly last night. In fact, it has worked for weeks.

The statement which I believe is causing the error is...
TheUsersChosenSerialPort.Open();

Much like the other thread mentioned, the port is a BlueTooth connector, and Win'7 is reporting him okay, and so on.

I welcome responses from those with useful knowledge on this topic.

Good Morning All,

I am having issues installing Windows updates, they have been failing upon install for the past 3-4 months.  I get the error code 80070079, "The Semaphore timeout has expired".  So I tried backing up my data to just wipe it and reload the OS, the backup fails as well, same error message.  Then I tried moving files manually to an external drive and that as well timeouts on the larger files.  I have searched the Internet and it many people seem to have this issue and it relates to the network adapter, but I am not trying to do anything over the network (Updates are already downloaded just waiting to install), so I feel it is something else.  Does anyone know of a fix or possible solution?  I searched semaphore through the registry and there are a lot of entries, but not sure if i need to change any of them or not?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Machine is a Dell Optiplex 780, Windows 7 32-Bit, 4GB Ram, 800GB HDD, Broadcomm Network Adapter.

Thanks,
Brent

Hi, I use Windows XP Pro and I am getting this error message in the system event log everytime I log in. Now I only get one, but just recently there are like 3 or 4 in a row many times during the initial log in to the internet network.

I have tried to search everywhere and google and yahoo for an answer but never was able to get a clear solution.

Luckily, I am able to get online just fine but the idea of this showing up constantly bothers me. It was fine, for about 4 months it stopped showing up after I did no changes to my system but its now back.

Also for a while I was getting something about user cancelled something but I have not seen that in a long time.

I tried to unplug the modem and cables to reset the IP , but that doesnt help. Also not that my service uses a Dynamic IP and I cant switch to static IP.

Its called Event: 1003 Source: DHCP

hello again...

dang this thing is a pain!!

new issue today, trying to save a tiny .rtf file to external USB drive, and get "semaphore timeout period has expired" message and have to save to local drive instead. also get the message if i drag and drop into the desired location.

perhaps related to the issue i occasionally have: the machine loses connection to the external drive and either the folder shows empty (it's not!) or doesn't show as even being connected. little blue light on the drive will sometimes go out, sometimes not, but still no access...

EDIT: i have two verbatim USB drive attached... one or the other of them will occasional disappear from This PC and when i look at device manager there is an error on that drive. i disconnect and reconnect and the drives show up and the error in device manger goes away... there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why this happens. when it does and i try to save something to the drive, that's when i get the "semaphore timeout period has expired"

i have tried to update drivers using windows search online and it always says i have the best drivers loaded....

the drives have been checked for errors and windows reports none... there is still quite a bit of available space on them (80+ gigs on each) and when they are connected and live, i can access files with no problem... it just decides to seemingly drop the drive randomly...

thanks for any help...

I maintain some software that makes a tcp socket connection to a different piece of software and sends data back and forth (pretty basic stuff there). We use boost asio to handle reading and writing of data over the socket connection. We have a client that
has deployed this software on Windows7. The client has been having issues with our software not being able to maintain a reliable socket connection. One thing I have noticed is that quite often the networking callback are receiving the error: The semaphore
timeout period has expired.

This error is not coming from anywhere in our code (or the boost code). I've done some research on it and I found a Microsoft Knowledge base article on this error for Windows XP (support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/325487). I've seen a few people ask questions about
this error on Windows7, but they're all in regards to moving files to different drives, nothing regarding network connections.

What does this error mean in regards to Windows7? Does the knowledge base article I mentioned still apply to Windows7?

Hello Ady,

Thanks for your post!

This issue may be a little complex and require some steps to troubleshoot:

1.    Update the driver of wireless network adapters in both of your computers.
2.    Temporarily disable all the firewalls and anti-virus applications, then check the issue again.
3.    To exclude the factors from other services and applications, do a clean boot to check the issue and perform Step 4.(KB929135) How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vistahttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;929135
4.    With clean boot, try to apply the hotfixes contained in the following KB articles:(KB932045) Error message when you use a network connection to copy a large file from one Windows Vista-based computer to another Windows Vista-based computer: "The connection has been lost"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932045(KB932063) Several problems occur on a Windows Vista-based computer when you work in a wireless network environment
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932063
If problem still persists after steps above, this issue is very possibly due to network devices or configurations, please let me know:

1.    Whether this problem occurs in wired network?
2.    If strengthening the network signals, the problem can be changed?
3.    What size of files will lead to this error.
4.    Does this error terminate the copy process?

So I did a search and found nothing definitive regarding this particular error in my application.

I have a Dell laptop with an i7 processor, an SSD drive and 8g of ram, running Win7 Pro 64 bit.

I put a 128G micro sd card into the sd card adapter and slapped into the slot. When I try to move files to the card, I get the error.

I formatted the card just for grins. It won't format NTFS, but it did format exFat @ default allocation unit size.

The only file that didn't copy was one that's 21 megs in size. Everything else was smaller and copied over fine.

Donno what to do from here. Any help would be appreciated.

I am planning on buying an MSI P67A-GD55 (B3) motherboard and I noticed it has a serial port header onboard. I would like to know where I wan buy an adapter to utilise this header. I searched it up and found this: http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=3543&sku=28300
But that is just for Intel motherboards. Does anyone know where I can get one for my motherboard?

A:Solved: Where to buy serial port?

That adaptor should work fine on that board as far as I can tell. When it says its for Intel boards it is refering to the motherboard chipset not the manufacturer. The MSI board you have listed has a serial port connector and they are standard as far as I am aware. However, I haven't used or needed a serial port for many years so I am not overly familiar with them.

I install a driver for Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port from Prolific website for my windows 7 ( I also tried my windows XP) but the device has mark on the device manager and when I open it, it says:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

In the Prolific FAQ, I read:

Why do I get an Error Code 10 (Yellow Exclamation Mark) after I installed the latest driver?
A If you are getting an Error Code 10 with a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager after installing the latest Prolific PL-2303 driver, please contact the cable maker of your product for Prolific chip validity and support. Prolific strongly recommend to only purchase USB-to-Serial cables from company-branded products providing technical support. It is not advisable to buy from unknown cable makers (no-brand cables) made in China. Prolific does not manufacturer any end-product cables and will not provide direct support to end-users.
Is there a solution or alternative driver, or I get cheated on a Chinese device that does not work?

A:Solved: Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port

If a driver, any driver, hasn't been fully tested to work on Windows 7 (Windows 7 certified), expect problems with it.
I doubt you'd get a compatible driver elsewhere unless it was for a device with a well-known and famous brand name, which this device certainly isn't.

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 Series PC and am having problems with the serial port for the printer. The owners manual has a diagram for where plugs should go for the printer, but the plug doesn't match the size of the port. The printer has been plugged into another serial port for connecting serial peripheral devices, but the plug doesn't really fit in there either. I've had to unplug it a few times lately to downloan and update printer drivers, but it never really fit right. Maybe that's why I haven't been able to print off the internet, but still can print off notepad. I don't know. Is it possible that some of the pins in the serial port are bent from plugging and unplugging? Or maybe we have the wrong cord for connecting the printer to the PC? I have two serial ports, one is 9 pin the other is larger. The camera requires the 9 pin connection. The 9 pin is on Com 1 and has the settings IRQ:4 Range:03F8-03FF. I am using a cable modem, and I do not have a dial up modem installed. I have checked the device manager and there are no exclaimation points or "X's" by Com 1. Device manager also reports no conflicts with Com 1. Any suggestions for resolving this problem would be appreciated.

i need the pci serial port driver for Elitebook 8460p -Windows 10 64bit

A:pci serial port

Hi: You need this driver for that device... This package provides the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver for the supported notebook models and operating systems. The Intel Management Engine Interface enables communication between the host operating system and the Intel Management Engine firmware. ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp64001-64500/sp64098.exe

I have reviewed the other serial port malfunction thread, but it didn't seem to correct my problem. My computer will not recognize a device plugged into the serial port. I have confirmed the settings for the port which concur with COM 1, but I continue to receive a "device not connected" in the software.

Check to make sure the serial port is enabled in the bios. Sometimes, one will be disabled by default (to make us crazy), but it's easy to fix.

At work I was using a laptop with a serial port, which I used to communicate with an electronic device. The application used for the communication between the laptop and the device is designed to use a serial port.
The problem is I have now got a new laptop without a serial port (this seems to be the thing now!?) and I'm trying to use the USB port instead. My laptop doesn't like this at all!
Is there any way to configure the laptop to make the application think that it is talking to a serial port when it is in fact connected to the USB?
Any pointers anyone?
Cheers

To enable the serial ports you are going to get the BIOS password or override it. What make and model PC is it? Also what BIOS and version is it? You can see them after powering on the PC while it is booting.
