I have recently purchased some on line backup with Norton security and downloaded pictures and music etc, I have inadvertently deleted the picture file. When I tried to re install from the back up it gets as far as initiallising with a progress bar but remains at 0.0 progress and remains like that until I cancel. Howdies,

I know this has absolutely nothing to do with win7 but you guys rock so I thought I'd ask here first.

When I installed win7 my norton 360 sub had expired so instead of having to pay the extra to renew (70 squid) I decided to rebuy the download (40 squid). However my mother paid for it so it got registered in her name instead of mine and now I can't access my online back up so I can retrieve me iTunes folder (which I forgot to back up manually before upgrading). There is an option to change email address when U are on the log into norton account screen but then it tells you the product is registered to someone else so tough ... lol

Any ideas appreciated

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is where I'm supposed to post, so correct me if I'm wrong. Also, I'm a new Windows 7 user, so I may need things dumbed down.

I already had an anti-virus program that I use when I first started Windows 7, so I choose not to install Norton nor have I ever installed Norton on my computer. Before installing my new program, I uninstalled Norton, Control Panel + Programs + Uninstall and it disappeared. I also choose to uninstall the Norton Online Backup. At the time, I wanted to uninstall it not for any real reason, just wanted to get rid of anything Norton on my computer to avoid future confusion, not because I thought it actually did anything. But even though I've tried and tried, and according to the window that pops up and tells you you were successful, Norton Online Backup is still there.

Now I don't know what that program does, or if it's fine to let it hang out on my computer or anything, but the fact that I can't get rid of it is driving me crazy. Every once in a while, few days or so, a screen pops up, asking me if I want to try a free trial of Norton. There's a "remind me later" button, but no "no, never ask me again" or opt out button. I'm not sure why Windows keeps asking me that, or if it's the Norton Online Backup doing it's thing, but I have an anti-virus program, and I don't want Norton!

I've also downloaded a Norton removal tool, ran it, a window said I was successful, and I restarted, but Norton Online Backup ... Read more

So I got infected by malware yesterday and made the decision to reformat my hard drive to get rid of it. I thought it would be fine, because I had backed up all of the files in the My Documents folder using Norton 360's backup function, which had made 8 backup CDs about two weeks ago, before I had the malware. The problem is that Norton will only process 4 or 5 of the CDs before it crashes. Then I have to start all over again with the restore, and the same thing happens. I have tried this four times, to no avail. I am not running any other programs in the background during the backup either. I can't get the files off of the CDs manually because Norton has changed the files so that they are no longer functional--they are in an N360_LONG_FILENAMES directory and the names are all gibberish, with no file extensions. Does anyone know how I can get my files off of the CDs without Norton, or how I can get Norton to stop crashing? Thanks in advance. If you need more information, I would be glad to provide it--I am just not sure what would be relevant to the problem.

Oh, I forgot to say that I'm running XP and have used Windows Update to install all of the updates that have been available.

I have a gateway computer, dsl line with wireless router. Also have Norton 360, which according to most of these forums...its a bad thing!!!
basically I can't get online, I though at first it was my dsl but troubleshot with verizon tech and its working fine. the line is ok, the wireless router is ok (I can get online with my laptop using wireless connection, no I don't have 360 on my laptop)
I feel like its 360 that's effecting my computer, I'm going to uninstall it tonight and see if I can get online afterwards but does anyone have any other suggestions on what it might be.
the computer was working fine (I've had 360 for 6 months) and all of the sudden it wouldn't let me get online.
any help would be appreciated

A:Can't get online, I think its Norton 360 !!!!

Well, since it worked ok for 6 months it might not be Norton. First track down any software changes made immediately before this happened. Sometimes Micrsoft updates which usually come out on a Tuesday can affect applications. Also, have you run a virus checker to see if there are any infections. Please check your internet settings by going to control panel, network & internet connections, internet options, click on the connections tab, click on lan settings and make sure the detect settings automatically is checked. If this doesn't work please try rebooting the router and modem before trying to get online again.

Does anyone here use the Carbonite online backup service? I know someone who does, but I'm still a bit skeptical of trusting my "priceless" photos and stuff to some company's server.

I've been backing up on separate hard drives. But they're not big enough now, so I'm going to have to buy a bigger one. Is it better to go with an online service, and upload your files to their server, than mirror a partition to your local backup hard drive? What is the best online backup service out there?

My friend who uses Carbonite loves it (though he's never had to restore a wiped-out system with it). They charge $49.95 per year for unlimited space. Their software monitors your system to detect changed/added files and then uploads those, adding to the backup, but I wonder if that extra software being always active is going to slow down my system.

Doubt it, and how long have you got anyway ? A typical PC has often got a minimum of 20Gb of data, whilst a typical 5Mbit download broadband only has 300Kbit upload, and to transfer 20Gb would take approximately 148 hours.

Better buy a cheap USB hard drive

After having installed the cable modem..I notice Norton is always disabled on startup..but as soon as I get online (after everything finishing loading after being turned on) it enables itself. I looked up some stuff on Norton about it..said it was normal behavior..something to do with system resources. But I wasn't sure.

It works fine the rest of the day..it still updates itself every Wednesday, etc. And its only disabled for 30 seconds at the most. Just wondering if maybe the cable modem caused this..or whats going on. Thanks for any info!

I do most of my banking and bill paying online. May bank is offering a free download of Norton Confidence Online, see here: http://www.tdcanadatrust.com/ebanking/norton.jsp

Along with my AntiVir Guard, Kerio firewall, Ad-Aware, MS AntiSpyware and WindowsDefender I occasionally run online scans like: BitDefender, ScanIt Browser and Trend Micro AV+IS tests.

So my Qs are:

1. is Norton Confidence Online a good program to have?
2. does it do anything more or better than the ones I listed?

I suspect it may be a free trial only, but will have to check with my bank on that. Any insights will be appreciated.

TIA

A:'Norton Confidence Online' ... is it worth having?

Norton is a lousy way to go the way I see it. How they can even call anything they make "Confidence" is astounding. I've met many and have friends whom have used Norton products and all of them got infected. None of them are fools either.

And if you use Internet Explorer to do anything with your online banking, you've opened yourself up to tons of threats. There are even programs (which are free and easy to find) that make the asterisks useless when entering passwords. So I hope you don't use IE.

Not sure about those other programs you asked about, but online banking and bill paying is an awful, awful idea. Too many eyes, too many criminals with too much knowledge.

That's my friendly advice. I sincerely hope that your banking information is never compromised, but if you do in fact use IE, at least switch to something more obscure like Opera or even Firefox...even though Ff isn't all that obscure now.

Perhaps this:

Open Internet Explorer. Click on Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan settings > uncheck all boxes under Proxy server.

If that gives you your Internet connection back,

Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Hi:

Bummer.

Obviously, it is no longer entirely up to date on some details.
So I offer it "as is", as far as researching the other companies.
This is in addition to the usual vendors (Carbonite, Mozy) and the big "cloud" file-sharing services (Google Drive, OneDrive, SugarSync, etc.)

I have a feeling that an UNLIMITED account with TRUE ARCHIVING and adequate SECURITY will be EXPENSIVE and/or hard to find.

I've struggled with this problem twice in the past, and the second time was never resolved. This time I purchased the newest Quicken 2017. Quicken Customer Support helped me to delete my old account info for the Online Backup, which is still wonky. Now I'm trying to set up a new account (have the acct # & password ready to go) but I ran into a problem with setup. It gave me this error:
LA4150: Phrase # 24150 (C:\Program Files\Quicken Online Backup\BuEng.dlx
That's all it said, which isn't very helpful in resolving it. I'm not sure what folder to pick in browsing for a place to store my backups, but this is the one that I found. Any ideas on how to make it work? Or a different folder to try?

I run a small business and have my important data backed up in the same HDD. Further as there is always risk of hard drive failures, I wanted to keep my data securely somewhere offsite. One of my good clients recommended me this online backup service to backup my data safely and automatically. He claims that they use if for years and it works well for them but before I use this service I wanted to know your views/ comments on this.

A:Online Backup - Any Ideas?

That is an option. Another option is to have your computer backup to your computer at home. You can use a Dynamic DNS service to connect to whatever computer you wish. As a mater of fact you could have it backup to a external USB drive with the right type of router. http://no-ip.com is a free service. This way you have total control.Just one more dea to think about. You will need atleast DSL or cable on each end.

I am very interested in backing up to an online site, but have done SOME research and SOME seem very reasonably priced and some seem outrageously priced. Carbonite seems the best for the money but I heard you can't retrieve your email. The reason I'd like to backup to an online site is I'm on the road a lot and it would be nice to log on from any system and access my files.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a LOT of info I would need backed up.

A:Anyone BACKUP to online sites?

We connect our clients to a number of such sites... there are at least 125. They work reliably, but their prices keep going up after they have the client hooked. We have no known failures with them.

I tried to renew my Norton Antivirus 2003 subscription...
they took my $24.95 really easy...
but Norton Antivirus won't work...
they refuse to respnd to any emails...
what is one to do?

windows XP... Norton Antivirus 2003 on my computer...
I try to run Norton Antivirus 2003 but it flashes something on my computer too fast for me to read, but does nothing... my computer will tell me to run LiveUpDate, and I try to but it gives me a message to go to their knowledge base online.... I cannot run liveUpDate to get the error message again... it pops up and asks me to run it whenever it wants to... but I can't get anything Nroton to run (I assume because my subscription ran out.)
I think I may have asked for a renewal to Norton 2004 instead of 2003...
but I am not sure... all I know is NOTHING works...

Is anyone familiar with the ISP called CenturyLink and Norton antivirus? Norton has discontinued Norton Internet Security Online and now has Norton Security. But, my ISP which is CenturyLink still uses Norton Internet Security Online that they have provided their customers to use. Does anyone know why they haven't upgraded to Norton Security?

A:CenturyLink with Norton Internet Security Online

I wouldn't use Norton if someone paid me to do it.

I personally use Vipre.

So my very highly coveted HP Upline service was just discontinued today and I need to find another online backup service. I have two local backups, but I really just feel I need that offsite storage, just in case. Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about any other service you've tried? I've looked at the major ones like Mozy and Carbonite, and some others like SOS. SOS looks great, but it's $49.95 per 15GB per year, so that's just cost prohibitive. Mozy and Carbonite are 49.95-54.95 per year, unlimited GB. Just looking for some thoughts before I commit to something. Thanks!

I currently use CrashPlan, but need to backup more than one computer, which doubles the price. BackBlaze used to be a top product, but don't see if even making the reviews anymore...

Looking for unlimited storage, continuous backup, image backup, good retention, all for cheap (LOL!).

Recommendations and reasoning appreciated! Thanks!

A:Best online backup options (Cloud)?

You aren't going to be able to beat the price of CrashPlan and still have the same level of safety and reliability. I prefer Carbonite myself but it will still cost more for multiple computers. Only you can determine how valuable your data is and how much you are willing to spend to protect it. Considering how much data recovery costs, assuming lost data can even be recovered (often, it cannot), unless yu can replace your data pretty much for free, shelling out the shekels for safe and reliable backups is far cheaper.

How good is Comodo online backup? Anyone have experience with this program?
Is this unlimited storage?

Thanks for the help.

A:Comodo online backup questions

The Comodo backup program comes with no online storage as standard; if you want to backup online you'll need to have access to an FTP server or subscribe to the Comodo Online Storage service here.

Adrive offers 50gb of free online storage, but you have to pay if you want to connect via ftp. Fabrik offer 2gb free with no limitations; useful for backing up email and smaller documents.
