Horizontal Lines Across Laptop Display

Q: Horizontal Lines Across Laptop Display

Hello! A week ago I bought the Dell 7567 and since the first day I've had it, the display shows a couple of horizontal lines across the top of the display. It doesn't seem to be an issue with the internal hardware because I have an external monitor connected to the laptop which does not show the lines but maybe I'm mistaken. Is this an issue with the laptop's panel itself or drivers? How do I resolve this issue?
I would love to hear a response, thank you
I have an image to show the horizontal lines:

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Horizontal Lines Across Laptop Display

Hi AimeeFritz,Thanks for posting. It's possible the problem lies in the LCD itself but here are some troubleshooting steps that may help.- First, connect an external monitor to the laptop then press the Windows key + P at the same time then select Duplicate display and see if the same problem will persist on the external display.- If you'll still see the horizontal lines on the external display that could mean the the problem is the GPU itself.- Do a clean install of the graphics card driver that may solve the issue.- Go to Device Manager and uninstall the graphics card driver.- Next, open Programs and Features then uninstall anything related to the graphics card.-Once that's done, download and install the latest driver from the manufacturer's site of the GPU.- Reboot the laptop once the latest driver has been installed.- After the reboot and if the same problem persists, then I would suggest contacting Dell Tech support in your country for a repair if it's still under the factory warranty.- Also, if the line does not appear on the external display, try to open the laptop and check the ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the motherboard. If it's still not working after reseating the ribbon cable, the last option would be to replace the LCD completely.

I have been using a Hewlett Packard 8575C PC with a Avitron AV-7TF Display for the past two years with no display problems. Last week, I began to experience gray horizontal lines across the screen. These are particulary dense behind writing or graphics and can be seen in all software applications and web pages. I am running Win98. I have tried making changes to the Display Settings but nothing changes. In Safe Mode, the lines are still visible though more difficult to see since the resolution is different.

Any ideas how to help?

Thanks.

So after continuous incidents I decided to see if someone can help me here. I have a MSI N660 TF 2GD5/OC video card and I connect 2 monitors to it. The primary monitor is connected using a DisplayPort and the secondary is connected using HDMI. The scan line issue only happens on the DisplayPort monitor. I've attached a sample image, the scan lines are worse that what it looks on the image, the scan lines would be racing all over the screen. To fix the issue I would have to turn the monitor off then back on so it goes back to normal.
Another issue that normally happens is that when the computer goes to standby and I move the mouse or press down a key the monitor won't show the desktop, instead it will show "no signal" and will do somewhat light up as though it found a signal then display "no signal" again. There is also another incident that when my PC goes into deep sleep, for those times I am away from the computer long, it goes into deep sleep but then automatically wakes up. And at times when it does go into hibernation, because of not being used for too long, it won't wake up after clicking the mouse or keyboard. It won't resume even if I hit the power button. To make it resume I would have to flip the power switch on the PSU off and the back on, then press the power button just so it can wake up.

I am not sure if anyone has had a similar issue but any help would be grateful. I did read on the updated NVIDIA drivers page that the beta driver solves ... Read more

Columns of Horizontal Lines appear randomly and frequently on my desktop. Not always but sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. Images of the display on my desktop are attached along with my pc specs and a detailed version OURPC.txt. Some days they never appear. My computer freezes as a result and only a reboot (Front panel button on hd) solves the fault - but not always. Occasionally, the lines appear at boot up immediately after the 'Welcome' screen. A reboot into Safe-Mode usually is fine. I got them today once, and a normal reboot was fine and no problems as i type. Adding to this i get the BSOD instead (hardware? i know) but have no way of telling if this is related to the above problem or not. This is increasingly annoying when working online, emailing or viewing. The lines appear over the desktop display or browser. I know when it's going to happen from a buzzing sound through spkrs/headset and The red flashing hd light just switches off. The whole thing freezes and as i've said i have to restart via the start button on the hard drive itself. (the small button on right in image 1054). If i get the lines 2 or 3 times i just boot into safe-mode networking and work from there. Of course i only have the basic windows display available to me so am limited.
The most uptodate driver for the Intel HD adapter is Jan2012 and i have that. Incidently i had the same problem with the previous driver so have ruled that out. Is it something simple like adjusting settings or... Read more

Hi. I have horizontal lines that scan my monitor whenever i play a game. I can see the horizontal lines only on darker colors like grey, dark-green etc. I have a Samsung E2220 display that runs at 1080p on 60hz on a vga cable (no hdmi/dvi support on it). I tried another vga cable, i tried another power cable but with the same result.
I have all drivers updated (monitor and other hardware). My current PC specs are: AsRock N68-C S UCC, Phenom II x4, 4Gb DDR3, Radeon HD7770, 500gb HDD Sata3 and a power supply Sirtec 500W 80+.
If I open Far Cry 3, for example, i get those horizontal lines. If i minimize the game i still get the horizontal lines if i have something dark on my display (a grey/dark-green/dark-blue website).

Before the HD7770 i had a GTS 450 and had the same problems. Could it be the PSU, or the motherboard or what? I also tried a different display monitor (on the VGA) and had the same horizontal lines scaning my display monitor.
The monitor is a year old, still under guarantee same goes for the PSU and the other components.

What do you think ?

PS: Lowering the resolution or increasing/decreasing the Hz doesen't help.

Sorry for my bad English.

That monitor has a DVI-D connection. And the 7770 certainly does.
Why aren't you using the DVI cable?

suddenly my 23" samsung 2333 display started to flicker and give a partial display of my win screen with a lot of horizontal lines.
see image.
although i managed to get into windows the top edge of the screen was not accessible, making it virtually impossible to access controls situated at the top of open programs - i had to guess where the cursor is as it 'vanished' from the visible part.

after uninstalling printer drivers, removing the graphics card and plugging the monitor into the mother board the problem persisted, reminding me it was there in bios as well!

replace display with old one lying around, voila, problem sorted.
the display needs replacement.

so i figure if you guys get a problem display even at bios level, before any drivers start kicking in; odds are good the display is the culprit.

Hi,

I have a problem with my computer's display. If I let the computer start up normally the display is fuzzy, full of horizontal lines and I am unable to make out anything on the screen. When I use safe mode the display is fine like nothing is wrong.
I'm running Vista Home Premium SP 2 on a dell studio 540. I'm using an hdtv as my monitor. It is attached to the hdmi port on my computer. I don't have another monitor that I can use.
This is what I was doing immediately before the problem started. I was running a live boot of Kali-Linux 1.06 but the display was cut off I couldn't see the full desktop. I was unable to shut down the computer because I couldn't see the shut down menu. I pressed the power button on the front of the computer to turn it off. When I turned the computer back on the BIOS screen appeared as usual but then the screen went blank and stayed blank. So I tried rebooting the computer a few times and a few hours later the screen started showing the fuzzy horizontal lines that I see now.
I did a system restore to the day before I ran Kali- Linux but it didn't do anything.
I reset the bios settings to factory default because I read that it might help but it didn't make a difference.

Thanks in advance

A:Fuzzy Blurry Display full of horizontal lines

If the problem doesn't reoccur in Safe Mode it would be your graphics driver.

When you boot into Safe Mode the graphics driver used isn't what you normally use, it is a driver which is native to the operating system.

I would suggest uninstalling the graphics driver, then download the driver from Dell Support.

Today, when I opened the lid of my laptop, the display had thin black lines running from top to bottom of the entire screen. It seems like a hardware issue to me with the connection of the display. If anyone has ever experienced this please let me know if there is a fix. The lines are more visible on a white background and become more visible if I look at the screen from the side. I have attached a photo, I can assure you that it is not just from the camera on my phone, but the actual laptop . I have also connected the laptop to an external monitor, the external monitor did not have lines across the screen.  Appreciate the help!

I recently noticed that my 2 month old M3800 laptop has 2 horizontal lines / bands running across the laptop display.  I have 2 dell monitors setup with no issues, the lines / bands only appear on the laptop screen.
Anyone else encounter this same issue?
I am ready to contact Dell for a replacement / fix...
Mike

A:Dell M3800 Display with horizontal bands/lines across screen

This seems to be an issues with many M3800's I've had 5 different machines displaying this issue. The horizontal lines come at 1/3, 2/3, and at the bottom of the screen (the one at the bottom is easy to miss.) If you run the built in display test, the lines don't seem to appear but they show up quite readily if you use 3rd party screen testing programs (I use PassMark MonitorTest), specifically on Grey and Green colors and screens with horizontal gradients where the color changes along the lines.
Definitely get it replaced, but don't be surprised if the replacement ends up doing the same thing. (I've had two different 'fixed' units have recurrences of this issue.)

Hello all.

I have a Dell Latitude D600 and at random times the display will flicker with horizontal lines. I can sometimes agitate it by gently twisting the LCD and it will flicker. I've done some research before and thought the problem would be the flex video cable, which I ordered and installed, but it still flickers. The LCD looks cosmetically perfect, as well as the inverter. The display backlight isn't flickering, rather there are white lines that flicker randomly, so I don't think it's the inverter.

I hooked it up via VGA to an external machine and only the laptop suffered the flicking so I believe that the graphics card is fine.

Here's a video on what I'm talking about.

I have a Dell Vostro 3450 running Windows 10 and I have a issue with my laptop screen (please see the attached photo)  .

This issue comes only when I use my laptop screen sometimes and it goes away after some time but when I connect it to a external monitor the screen display works perfectly. I tried taking a screenshot of the laptop screen when this issue happens but the screenshot doesn't show this issue. What may be the problem and can this issue be fixed ?

A:Display problem in Dell Vostro 3450 (Horizontal colored lines)

Hi,
Based on the troubleshooting performed if the display is good on external screen then the systemboard works fine. Now that the issue is seen only with the laptop screen I would ask you to initiate the LCD BIST( Built in Self Test) on the system.
To initiate LCD BIST restart the system along with the FN key pressed or restart the system and keep tapping the D-Key. During the test solid colours will be displayed on the screen if the distortion is displayed during the test its confirmed that the screen is faulty.

Hi Guys,

One of my first posts on this forum, as its my first DELL machine.
The workstation is:

DELL M3800
CPU i7-4712HQ
GPU NVIDIA Quadro K1100M
W10 Pro

Over the last few months, the screen has developed two horizontal lines (Splitting the display into 3 segments) that appear to flicker when showing certain shades of colour. The flicker is completely invisible under white or black backgrounds, but becomes extremely noticeable under different shades of grey, and other darker colours. The lines appear to start approx .5 cm from the left edge with a sharp contrast, and fade away towards the right edge.
The flicker appears to be getting progressively worse over the past couple of weeks, but does go away sometimes altogether.

I have reinstalled my video and chipset drivers and am running out of ideas.
Tried a HDMI connection to a TV, and the lines are not present, which seems to point towards the display being faulty?

Any suggestions on what could be causing this would be greatly appreciated!

If you are also using the same HDMI to connect to your regular monitor that you connected to the TV, then, yes, the display is probably faulty.

They happen randomly in short bursts like it will last 5 seconds then stop or if not I close my laptop and open again and its back to normal. I'm not sure if its a driver problem or hardware since my laptop is still fairly new and this issue only started not too long ago.
Its an MSI laptop using windows 10

It sounds like a bad LCD panel, video cable or the connection. Power on the computer and keep tapping the F8 key then select Safe Mode with Networking. See if the problem appears on screen. You can also choose Low Resolution VGA mode (or something like that) from the F8 menu. That will help determine whether it's hardware or software related.

I have a hp dv6000 running vista that has recently put a lot of horizontal lines in the monitor. They are lines that are discolored and make it very hard to read, like it's every other line of resolution. I have raised my font to get through a project, but need to get this fixed or get a new laptop. A local repair shop said it was probably the monitor ribbon cable, that's where they would start. They wanted around one hundred dollars for the cable and time, and it may not solve the problem. My thought, is that the cable would be an intermittent problem, power would be black screen, and vid card would be black screen. The laptop runs as usual, its just missing half the info on the monitor. Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts? The laptop is disassembled because I was going to order a new LCD for it, but came here before clicking on buy.

A:Solved: Laptop monitor has horizontal lines

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Any repair place worth its salt should have a look at the machine and do some tests (which may cost an hour of time) before suggesting a replacement part, which may not even be the faulty component.

If you can get the laptop back together and do a simple test (below) it can help to narrow down where the fault lies. It could be the LCD, the Graphics Card, RAM or a cable / connector, drivers or something else, hard to say at this point.

Plug the laptop into an external screen and see if the problem occurs there. If it doesn't then it could be the LCD itself or a cable / connector between the GPU and LCD. If the problem occurs on the external monitor it is more likely to be a problem with the GPU itself which would likely require the entire motherboard being replaced.

I have a Toshiba Equium P200D-139 laptop and the screen stopped working. It lights up but the display consists of vertical lines, which slowly fade into a black screen.
I tried it on an external monitor and it worked fine, (so presumably cannot be a faulty graphics card/motherboard). So, I thought it was likely to be either be the inverter or the screen itself.
After trying a new inverter with no success, I bought another second hand screen. However, the new screen has the exact same problem with the ‘horizonal lines’ display. Just occassionally, I catch a glimpse of a partial Vista screensaver for a split second but then its back to black. I’m not a technophobe, so any info would be very much appreciated.
Please help, as it is driving me up the wall!

Computer info:
Laptop, Toshiba Satellite A100

Intel Duo Core 1.6Ghz

Monitor Info:
Samsung 2243SWX LCD Monitor
Connection: VGA

The issue:
I just bought the above monitor for use with my laptop. Everything works great except for one thing. When the laptop is plugged in to AC power there are horizontal lines running up and down the screen. Sometimes it gets worse and the sides of windows open on the screen, and text become jittery & jagged looking.

If the laptop is running on battery power the image on the monitor is perfectly fine.

I have tried the laptop with different monitors, and the same thing happens. I have also tried the monitor with different computers and it works just fine, leading me to assume the issue is with the laptop itself. Thinking it might be interference of some sort I've also tried a heavy duty shielded VGA cable, a different AC power cord, USB-to-VGA adapter, and different wall outlets, all with no improvement.

I can't think of anything else to try short of taking it to a Toshiba service place to have it looked at, but I'd rather not have to pay that much money on a 3 year old laptop.

Any ideas/suggestions/help would be appreciated!

That's pretty much common in laptops/notebooks, it's a hardware issue. Try to connect the laptop to an external monitor; if everything is displayed correctly on the external screen, then your room-mate's laptop has a faulty LCD screen and/or inventer.

I looked for the driver, but AMD evidently doesn't support any more, and of course Medion had one cryptic vgae531xvst driver that I'm afraid to try because it doesn't look pertinent to the problem. Screen worked fine under Vista OS; but after Windows 7/64 Pro install, screen problem began. Another symptom is the speakers make a screeching sound whenever a key is pressed, at the same time the screen lines are present. I've shut down sleep mode in the hope that it will keep the laptop from developing the lines. The laptop works this way, but of course I'd prefer fixing whatever is causing this glitch on my monitor. Any and all suggestions appreciated.

I've a Dell inspiron 15r se laptop which is 1.1years old( model - 7520). It was working fine until last couple of days. Last week it started giving a horizontal white dot line on the very top of screen( like this ............. in white) for the entire width of the screen. From yesterday or so a similar line started appearing at the bottom too. Both of these line will come and go every 2 or 3 sec. And screen will jump a bit (like say 5 pixel or so roughly) and it will also shake sometimes which makes letters difficult to read.
The problem exists everywhere, even in boot screen. In short when I press power button and screen start displaying something problem also starts.
Today I connected an external lcd monitor via vga cable and it works fine. No line and no flickering. So I guess GPU is ok?? What could be the problem?? Could it be just loose contact or something in laptop screen cable?
Another question: I had warranty including accidental damage protection and stuff for a year. But since I'm outside this period now, what should I do?
And since I'm outside the warranty period anyway is it okay if I open my laptop and try something?
Please help!!

laptop will on occation accually work - perfectly- but for the most part starts you can hear the right sounds see the right display lights then it stops nothing on screen (sometimes different color lines , sometimes looks like a moving dark cloud). thought maybe a harddrive issue but looking into it maybe a problem with the graphics chip ,tried external video test ,got nothing .i figured why not go right to HP people for thier opinion and second if problem most likely is the solder and chip .what course of action to take ,the disassembly part dosen't bother me ,but heating up sensative components without right equipment does .i consider myself a novice at this but putting the mobo in the oven,  just don't seem right .any help or advice would be greatly appreciated   thank you

I've noticed in games that there are faint horizontal lines moving across (bottom to top) my monitor. Its not a big deal but once I notice them, it gets to be really annoying. I haven't tried another monitor because I don't have access to another one at the moment. It seems to help a little if I turn V sync on in games but I hate limiting my FPS.

Specs:
-ATI Sapphire HD Radeon 5770 <http://www.sevenforums.com/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=6>
-Drivers on gpu are up-to-date (10.8)
-Windows 7 64-bit with Catalyst Control Center
-Monitor: Dell SE178WFP (With drivers that W7 found)

I have tried everything short of a new graphics card/monitor. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would suggest downloading a temp monitoring program such as CPU-Z 1.55 here Download starting... - Softpedia
Also try blowing out the card with canned air and try reseating it.
If the temps are not a problem. And you don't have another card or system to try your card in, or a different monitor then it's going to be difficult to say it's your card or your monitor that is the porblem but it sounds like that is what is going on here.

they appear on the web browser, they appear on the search bars, they even appear in these dialog boxes of the forums while I type. These horizontal lines appear when I'm scrolling up or down, or clicking on dialog boxes for typing.

hi folks

I recently upgraded my old 9600 GT for something with a little more oomph - a GTX460. my card has been performing swimmingly until recently - ive noticed strange, wavy horizontal lines/flickering on screen in dark areas - particularly in games. this is usually accompanied by whining/buzzing sounds from the card itself. needless to say i'm concerned. I've checked and rechecked the drivers, booted into memtest for a full ram check and contacted the vendor (palit) without any luck. Its not a heat problem as far as i can tell, under stress the card hits about 61C maximum.

any ideas what could be causing this??

Put the old card back in and if that works ok then it might be a bad card..

Have a fairly new Dell S2740L monitor and all of a sudden it is showing horizontal lines on the right side of the screen.. They are black and evenly spaced apart. Ive tried updating the driver, trying different cables, resetting the monitor, running the lcd saver..... they persist. Does this mean my monitor is toasting itself?? I will try to attach a photo of the problem to give ya an idea what I am talking about . They go about half way across the screen then stop. It is really annoying. Ideas??

Hi Starzfan31 and welcome to 7 Forums. The issue could be your monitor or graphics system. The only was to tell is to hook the monitor up to another computer and also try another monitor on your PC. Good Luck.

Hi there,

I just bought a refurbished 22" Sony Multiscan G500. Looking closely, I noticed that two thin symetrical horizontal lines were always visible on the screen.

Could anybody explain why these 2 lines are showing? Should I return the monitor?

TIA

This is normal for Trinitron monitors - I forget why they appear but I do know its perfectly normal.

Hi there,Most likley the problem is going to be caused by either the screen cable been loose or broken, the inverter behind the screen or backlight. The only way to really tell is to take the laptop apart to find out. If your in warranty I advise you return it to HP for repair, Alternatively take it to a local IT repair shop. Many thanks,James

Hi....I have an nice HP Desktop PC that I have recenytly hooked up to my 46" Sony Bravia since it has a PC input to play movies from in my living room. At first everything was fine but now I am having a problem with HORIZONTAL GREEN LINES running from top to bottom constantly. This is only on the PC input as I have checked all other inputs. My PC is running Widows 7. I have tried restrating the PC, checking/plugging-unplugging the VGA cable in and out of the PC and TV and that did not fix the problem. Before this I had it hooked up to the 20" LCD monitor that the computer came with and I never had any problems with these green lines before. I have even tried adjusting the PC settings in the Sony Bravia and that has had no effect either. Is there anyone who might be able to help me out with this? Thanks.

can you reconnect to the 20" to test it?

I'm running XP, I started having horizontal "shadow" lines across my screen. Especially when using Word, or something with a light background and dark text lines. There is just a shadow all the way across the screen where the text(or dark object) is.

I bought a new Samsung 190s monitor. It still does it. Any clues?

A:horizontal lines across screen

If you already replaced the monitor, then your video adapter drivers are the next most likely suspect.

Locate the driver for your video adapter, whether on your motherboard cd, from the website or just let XP do it. Go into Device Manager, click on Video Adapter then remove. Reboot. XP will see your video adapter and more than likely install drivers. If you would rather use a different driver go back to your Video Adapter in Device Manager, highlight it and click on Properties>Update Driver and install the better driver from there.

hi there. i have a brother HL-1440 laser printer, and i'm getting about 8 horizontal lines (about 1/16 inch thick) smearing across each printed page. three lines one inch apart, then an inch and a half to the next three lines one inch apart. i have cleaned the corona wire using the blue plastic slide cleaner, as recommended, and i have cleaned the scanner slot with a clean dry cloth as well. neither of these fixes had any impact. what do i try next? thanks, randy
