Lenovo Yoga Laptop - Shut Down and Sleep Issues

Q: Lenovo Yoga Laptop - Shut Down and Sleep Issues

Hello, I would like to preface this by saying that I have spent a lot of time trying to figure this out myself and I would greatly appreciate your help. My laptop is a Lenovo Yoga (Machine Type Model 20CDX00) that has problems with shutting down and sleeping sometimes. The problem started after I restored my laptop with a clean copy of windows 10. I installed all of the drivers and I also updated my BIOS. I noticed that sometimes my laptop would not shut down completely and the battery would just drain in the blank screen that I couldn't do anything about. This also happened with sleep to. Not all the time, but sometimes. I tried to turn of hibernate and also fast start-up. But, that did not work. I, then, restored my computer again and I tried to reset the BIOS to the original BIOS. I am still having these problems even after the restore which makes me believe that the BIOS is at issue becuase it is ROM and would not have been changed by my restoring of the laptop. But, I did try to reset the BIOS to a previous version. So, I am stuck and I do not know what to do.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi The laptop was working perfectly until i updated the intel HD graphics driver to version 23.20.16.4849 (27/10/17).  As soon as I did this, the machine would not wake from either sleep or hibernate mode when the lid was shut. When I open the lid it will either enter staright into a black screen, and I can hear the fan spinning with lights to the right hand side but no further activity. Sometimes the Lenovo log appears on the screen first and then enters into a blank screen state. I am on Bios Lenovo C6CN34WW 29/10/15 As soon as I press and hold the power button to turn off, and then turn on again the machine loads into windows perfectly, with a visible display.  Any suggestions how to fix this? Thanks

I bought my laptop in 2015 and unwarranted, I'd like some help to get full functionality back into my laptop. While the subject states my problem, I do have some ways of getting use out of the computer:It can turn on if the battery is fully drained and after the computer is plugged in; it takes 8 days to drain. [Pressing and holding the power button only results in the PC flashing its backlit keyboard.] The battery can recharge and the PC can run on battery just as long the PC does not shut down, go to sleep, or the lid closes.Battery removal with the PC plugged in: the PC can always turn on, but when closing the lid or shutting it off, the power cord has to be unplugged and plugged back in.Additional computer information:-Windows 8.1 with updates-Installed BIOS update and Windows hotfix update from Lenovo.com

Hi, I have a Lenovo Yoga 900 (Intel Core i7-6560U 3.2 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 10) and have been experiencing the following issue since I purchased it: I put the laptop in sleep mode and into my laptop bag. The laptop will wake up by itself later despite the lid is closed. It then stays on as it's inside the laptop bag it gets very hot and drains the battery. Since this has happened closer to 10 times already I'm worried if the battery life is already damaged due to heating. Normally when I close the lid the laptop goes onto sleep mode.  I have already taken many measures to try and stop it from waking up from this article (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stop-windows-computer-randomly-waking/). I have set the power setting so that it should always go on sleep mode when the lid is closed. I don't understand how it goes on even when the lid is closed.  What could be the problem? Thanks in advance!

Hi. My keyboard stopped working out of the blue, and whenever I open the laptop it goes into tablet mode. Switching to laptop mode does not fix the keyboard issue. Any help?

A:Lenovo Yoga C930: Laptop switches modes randomly, sometimes thinks it's shut and just goes black!

Problem seems to have fixed itself, but I'm still worried. It's like something is making the laptop confused. Sometimes it doesn't know if it's in tablet mode, laptop mode, or closed. There's been times where the screen just shuts off, and I need to close and open the laptop again to get it to work. In fact, it was this that caused the issue in the first place. Is there anything that might be causing this system confusion?

I bought my Yoga 13 (type 20175) brand new in 2014.  It shipped with Windows 8, 128GB, 4GB, if I recall correctly.  I had a license for W8 Pro that I used and there was a free 8.1 upgrade that I completed not long after purchase. Upgrades over the last (almost) 3 years have been boosting it to 8GB of ram, installing a Samsung SSD 850 EVO (250GB), Windows 10 (Pro), and now a battery. Sometime in 2015, I started noticing that if I didn't use the laptop and left it off for 2 or 3 days, the battery would completely discharge to 0%.  I chalked it up to age, and could still get several hours of moderate use in a day, so it wasn't a priority.  Finally, I bit the bullet and bought a brand new battery and put it in last week. Nothing changed.  I still have the same problem. In retrospect, it may have coincided with the installation of Windows 10.  Below is a further description of the problem and things I have tried.   PROBLEM:When shutting down, the battery loses an average of 2.5% per HOUR. (i.e. after 10 hours, it goes from 100% to 75%)This is consistent whether I use the Windows Start menu, the power button, or a command prompt (shutdown /s /f /t 0) to turn it off.  By the way, putting it in hibernate burns at the same rate. When putting the laptop to sleep, the battery loses only about 0.75% per HOUR (i.e. after 10 hours, it goes from 100% to 92%).  This occurs regardless of how I put it to sleep... Hi amote,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Battery draiining reports are also visible on other OEM forums as well and most likely related to similar features offered by Windows 10. Such also applies to different model of different macnufacturers as well.

Disabling fast start as discussed here would be a good step to try first.

Our forums are peer to peer community discussion group but Tech support (although maybe limited to their own scope of support) also utilizes the discussions we have for investigation of issues.

Hey there,

I've recently got myself a new ASUS N550JV laptop and one of the first things I did after downloading a few programs was update to Windows 8.1. Shortly after this I noticed that when shutting the computer down or restarting, it would take about 5 minutes before it would finally power off. For most of the five minutes only a black screen can be seen but the computer is definitely still running. The hard drive seems to power off and then power up again multiple times during the five minutes as well.

Another problem, which I believe is related, is that I can't put the computer to sleep without it shutting down. When asking the computer to go to sleep, it's screen will quickly become black and it will enter one of these long shut down episodes. All the settings in the power options menus are set to sleep when the lid is closed, power button pressed etc.

I seem to have isolated the problem to the Windows 8.1 update. After a few days of these problems I decided to do a 'system refresh' and after that the computer was back to its normal sleeping and fast booting state. I then did not install any other programs (apart from the asus bloatware that had installed during the refresh) at all before updating to Windows 8.1 and as soon as I did the shut down and sleeping problems came back.

So, something about the Windows 8.1 update is causing things to not operate properly.

I have tried a clean boot and this seemed to allow me to sleep. But this has since turned out to be q... Read more

Hi Neramusis, welcome to the forums.

Can you please post the full model number of your Thinkpad?

The only idea that I have right now is why do you try to update the drivers of you computer, specially the Lenovo Power Management Driver.

This are my tips about updating drivers on the Thinkpad:

1) Try first Windows Update and update all the drivers and Patches
2) Try Lenovo System Update to get any new/missing drivers.
3) Try to install Lenovo Settings and Lenovo Companion from the Windows App Store, Lenovo Companion also has a "update driver search"
4) Sometimes all that software does not recognize some updated / missing driver. Check Lenovo's Support Site and search for your specific model drivers.

I know that this is "trial and error", but I think that updating the drivers may help with this issue.

I've been experiencing a lot of weird quirks with my Yoga 2, and I'm not sure whether Windows 8.1, my specific combination or drivers, or a hardware issue is to blame.  The most consistent, and annoying issue, is the laptop constantly freezes after putting it to sleep.  It is almost transparent -- I never see the blue screen, because I've already closed the laptop.  I just open it up, the Lenovo logo pops up, and it turns out my computer has rebooted.  The windows event log confirms that a critical error has occurred. I've performed a factory reset and it still occurs.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

A:Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro Freezing after sleep

Hi,I have the same problem with my yoga 2 pro. I've tried to find solutions but none of them work for me. My best guess is that the new hardware have compatibility issues with windows 8.1. My spec is i7 4500 8GB RAM 256GB SSDBTW, you can avoid this frustration by disable Sleep mode. I use Hybernate mode for both my power botton and lid-close actions. Setting are in Power Options.I hope Lenovo take this seriously, it's a shame that we have to experience all this. Don't they care about branding?

My Yoga 920 is around 6 months old and this issue started about 1-2 months ago. Every time the laptop goes to sleep it won't wake up. The only way to get it awake is to force restart it by holding down the power button. The trackpad won't wake it up, the keyboard won't an extrenal mouse won't, nothing will. The BIOS is updated and I have no other updates that deal with power (as far as I can tell) left to download. I have no idea what to do. This issue is very annoying as I have to restart everything any time I put my computer to sleep.

This is my third X1 (all different generations) and I was very happy up till now. The problematic one has a Skylake processor and 512GB SSD and it seemed like a really nice config. The problem is that it doesn't want to shutdown nor wake up from sleep.First symptom: when shutting down, the pc seems to have shut down, but is still draining battery. If the keyboard FN-lock button is lighted, you can notice that this stays on. Also the fan will stay on if it was running before. The keyboard is even still responsive and you can turn on and off the different LEDs.Second symptom: when the pc goes to sleep, there is no waking it up. Also here the keyboard stays responsive for fn-lock etc.I've tried many things: reinstall windows 10 from scratch, reset the bios, upgrade the bios. Then Lenovo was actually very helpful to start: they swapped out the motherboard and when that didn't work, shipped the pc to a repair center. From here it went downhil: the repair was done in less than 5 hours according to the ticket (so I was impressed) but when I got the pc back I noticed why: they didn't repair it. They put on an image of windows 7 and since there the problem was not visible, called it fixed. Very frustrating. I put back windows 10 and guess what: the problem was exactly the same. When they shipped the pc, they had created a new ticket in the system, closing the original one. Now they even closed the second ticket although I already commented that the pc still doesn't work as it is supposed... Read more

Today I experienced 4 times a 'hard shut down' of my Yoga laptop when browsing Chrome.- the screen went black within 1 minute after launching google chrome and browsing chrome --> the laptop then 'died' in without any notifications or error. I did not ever experience this before. I was hoping that Chrome was the issue, so I de-installed it. Unfortunately that was not it ... Now the same happens when I pull out the 'power connection', the laptop then shuts down hard, and will not come alive anymore, I can only turn it on when the power is plugged.- this now looks like a broken battery issue, however with the experience of the multiple 'hard shut downs' on the same day (with power plugged) I am not that sure anymore... Is there anyone that has an idea what could be the issue? many thanks, Jeroen

Hi guys,  Got my yoga last month and it's been okay, bit slow to load from sleep but it's done the job. Only thing is its now in a permanent sleep mode. I've tried re-charging it from zero battery, hard reset, putting the lid up and down, combining that with hard reset too. what to do? Do I have to send it somewhere? Obviously I don't want to open the thing up, I'd rather leave that to a professional. cheers.

For awhile, my laptop (Lenovo Yoga 13) wouldn't shut down from the screen (i.e., pressing the shut down option on the screen) so I had to physically touch the power button to shut it off. Now that I can lock my laptop finally, and leave it overnight, I can log into Windows just fine...I'm using Windows 8.1, just s you know. My only problem now is when I shut it down...Once it's shut down, I'm left praying that it turns on again and boots up like normal....but it takes me, like, 8+ (or more) tries before it's back on again. So now, when I use my laptop, I lock it so that I don't have to worry about it powering on; I"m able to use it normally after unlocking it. But what could the reason my laptop shuts down (when I shut it down myself since I can't shut it off from the screen using my mousepad) and the power button being on and glowing but showing a black screen? That's what happens after I shut the power off and turn it back on again.   My laptop is 4 years old, so it's out o' warranty and I can't get it fixed by Lenovo.  I hear it's a hardware issue, but is it an issue with the screen itself or is it a motherboard failure specifically? How can I fix it if I take it to a computer shop and how much exactly is it gonna cost me to fix it? Help is appreicaited!

Is there an older or newer driver for the mouse? If it's the latest driver it could have a regression. An older driver may actually be free of the problem.

If you have a USB wired mouse try that. If the problem disappears then you may have to wait until the bluetooth driver is fixed. On my Toshiba Laptop I use a USB optical mouse I got for $5. I didn't want to go wireless since a battery would add weight to the Laptop bag.

Greetings, I just bought Lenovo Yoga 330. It's been great, but i have one strange problem. When I wake the laptop from sleep, the CPU clock is stuck on 1.1 GHz (Which is its base clock). It won't go to turbo clock which is supposedly 2.6 GHz. The only solution i know is to reboot the windows, and the cpu clock is normal again.I know with ssd rebooting is fast, but still you need to wait some programs to start up. I'm a teacher, there are no breaks between my classes, i really need sleep mode to quickly use my laptop between classes.I know programs such Throttlestop from techpowerup can set the CPU to static 2.6 GHz, but it's not good for battery life. I need the dynamic clock, so the clock will low if the usage is low, and the clock will throttle up if the usage is higher.I am using windows 10 64 bit which was preinstalled during purchase. All the drivers are up to date, the BIOS also is the latest. I am wondering if lenovo team is already address this problem, i really hope they will release new BIOS soon. Sorry for my english, it's not my primary language.

My Yoga 3 Pro won't wake up from sleep / hibernation, the only sign of activity is the keyboard lights just blinking, AGAIN! :-(. This is a common problem with Yoga 2 13 models I have learnt, not only from various boards, but also my self, when I returned a yoga 2 13 after 5 days, and got the Yoga 3 Pro model. The laptop is now only 6 months old. I experienced the same wake up problems 3 weeks ago with my 3 Pro, and the shop here in Copenhagen sent it back to service. When I got it back 4 days ago, the service team had just changed "Cinch Audio" and updated the BIOS. It seems like they never really fixed the real problem. Two days ago the computer again had problems to wake up, and now it seems to be frozen in this blinking mode. I I have tried hard reboot (holding the power button for ca 20 secs), but it won't solve the problem. Has anyone experienced the same problem, and any durable solutions to it? If it stays like this, I'll hand it in, try to get it reimbursed and I will gladly buy another computer, but not from Lenovo anymore.

Hi all, I am struggling with an issue that I have seen in other posts, but they date back to 2015, so I need to understand if this issue has been solved with new upgrades. My PC came with Windows 8.1. I upgraded it to 10 and all was going well. However, because of some issues with Office 2007 I decided to reset it from the system (not from the Novo button). All went well and the PC seemed to be "lighter" and faster, maybe also because all the preloaded software didnýt get installed. However, after working fine for a few days the trackpad became completely unresponsive. I tried a lot of things, including updating the BIOS and updating Synaptic, but nothing. Based on a conversation with Lenovo support I reset the PC again and the trackpad started to work again. Lenovo support told me to use the Novo button in order to go back to Windows 8.1, do all the necessary updated in 8.1 and then upgrade to 10, but I wanted to see first if the same system reset would do the trick. After 2 days the trackpad stopped working again and I realised that, like reported in other posts in this forum, the issue happens when the PC goes into sleep mode or hybernates (bacisally when I close the screen). This never happened before I reset the PC the very first time. In Device Manager the mouse disappears and I can see an I2C HID Device with a yellow tringle. I have tried to update the drivers by choosing the Synaptic device and using the drivers from Synap... Read more

I have a Y2P which I upgraded to Windows 10 a few months ago.  I have updated all the drivers and the BIOS, done the registry fix for the DPTF driver discussed here to fix degraded performance in non-laptop mode, and turned off adaptive brightness.  Most of my use is plugged in with the machine in stand mode, with a second monitor and BT mouse and BT keyboard. After doing the DPTF driver fix, I noticed that a few times when I was away from my desk, the machine rebooted spontaneously due to a critical error which seemed to be from overheating, so I set the power mode to sleep after 10 minutes idle.  Most of the time, now, it has no difficulty waking up.  But so far twice when I have woken the machine, the primary monitor is off, and can't be found by any setting or control panel, and the auxilliary monitor behaves as though it is the primary one.  This can be fixed by rebooting or by unplugging the second monitor, and then plugging it in again. Also, a couple of times now, when the machine wakes, the primary monitor is very dim.  The first time it happened, I went into settings and made it brighter.  But when it happened today, despite my increasing brightness to 100% (through the keyboard, through the display settings, through whatever I could find) the screen stayed very dim.  I finally rebooted, and the screen returned to normal. Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping these things from happenin... New Yoga 700 11. Screen flickers continuously after returning from sleep. Stops after a reboot. Problem started right after unboxing and remains after running Windows Update. Windows now at version 1511. Intel HD Graphics driver now at 20.19.15.4300. Searching for Intel HD Graphics driver updates from Device Manager doesn't detect anything -- though I see the Intel site has a 15.40.14.4352 version that claims to address screen flicker. Automated brightness management is off. The laptop is plugged in, so battery power saving shouldn't be a factor. Question for the community: can I install the 4352 driver from the Intel site? Or do I have to wait for Lenovo to add special OEM features to the stock Intel driver?

My laptop with Win 8.1 Pro x64 has two issues with power states which are not working correcttly. They are:

1-the laptop does not shut down completely; either by navigating to the power down option on the settings charm bar or by pressing the power button on the laptop (I set it to shut down instead of sleeping as default). The computers apparently starts powering down, but the power led never switches off, and the cooler keeps spinning. It won't turn off until I press and hold the power button or the battery drains up.

Of course, the same applies to hybernating; the OS saves the content of RAM and starts shutting down, but never completely shuts down. Ditto with "fast boot" enabled; it doesn't matter if it's on or off, the laptop still doesn't power down.

2-if the laptop sleeps, it simply won't wake up. The monitor turns off and you'd expect to press a keyboard key or move or click a mouse button to awaken it, but nothing happens. Again, all I can do is holding the physical power button to force a shutdown or wait until the battery is drained. When the laptop keeps stuck in sleeping mode, I notice that after some instants the Num Lock led keeps lit, and won't turn off even if I press the key.

What do you think might be happening, is it some issue with ACPI or power states? What do you suggest to fix those issues? Thanks in advance.

Info:

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro x64
CPU: core i5-4200U
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 8850M

Every time it goes to sleep mode, it freezes. It just freezes, and I need to reboot it manually. I cannot roll back the Intel integrated graphics driver as many suggested before. Anybody with the same issue? How can I solve it?
