I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello All, I'm looking under the hood of my 1st gen Thinkpad X1 Carbon, and I'm trying to identify the PCIe slots.  In particular, the following page states that I should have 2 PCI Express Mini slots:  https://support.lenovo.com/au/en/solutions/pd027202 Now I see the WLAN card and the WWAN card, and my natural assumption is that these are both in PCIe ports, but on closer inspection I see that the WLAN card's slot is only 19mm wide, whereas the WWAN card is the standard 26mm width of normal PCIe Mini ports. This raises some questions:  1. Is the WLAN connected to a proprietary slot, or is this just a different type of PCIe standard?  2. If the WLAN is connected to a proprietary slot, where is my second PCIe slot? Any help would greatly be appreciated. Regards,Adam Zebrowski-az

A:Why is my WLAN card slot narrower than my WWAN card slot (PCIe mini)?

On closer inspection, it looks like my SSD connects to a similar-looking slot as my WLAN card.  I guess this means my WLAN card uses a SATA connection or something? I normally work with desktop PCs, so I'm unfamiliar with a lot of these laptop hardware standards. Regards,Adam Zebrowski-az-

Hello everybody.

Since sending a motherboard in for rma is both money-sink (need to ship it to them, a replacement unit and to reinstall windows) and an excruciating wait (weeks? months?) I'd like to try absolutely everything I can before I do.

Two months ago everything was working fine, then I had to take everything to another room to paint the walls in my room. Start getting "display drivers stopped working" as I plug the unit back, this over the span of three days. Case was cleaned last month, I decide to take out gpu and clean some more. Turn outlet and psu off, as soon as I start unscrewing the dvi cable I can feel static. Unplug psu, discharge power with the case button, take 6870 out and remove that little dust there was, put it back: gpu is powered up, fan spins, permanent black screen at boot, no video signal. Take it off, hook the thing to onboard gfx: everything works fine. Try back with 6870, black screen. Go get PSU tested, it apparently works (they didn't give me a full report on load). Go back, test mobo with three different older ati (pre-amd) cards, 3x black screen. Checked bios to make sure, main adapter was on pci-e.

I had other stuff to do so I put the issue to rest for a few days while I had one of the ati cards (2600 xt) double-checked by a store. As it turns out, the 2600 xt works alright, so I decided to take the plunge and go with a z77-a motherboard to replace the asrock (very cheap and couldn't even overclock so). After ... Read more

A:Card not working in first PCI-E slot

Are you cleaning out all the old drivers before switching all these cards? that can cause a card not to work right. But the reason you are switching to on board is because the bios does not detect the card. These motherboards- if they detect a card in a pcie X16 slot automatically disable on board graphics. So, it seems if you are switching to on board, it means BIOS isn't detecting the card is installed.

This is a used Toshiba laptop I got a month ago. The previous owner said he never used the SD card slot. I know why, because it's not working. When I slide any SD card in, the light comes on for 1 second and then comes off. The card is not recognized. Needless to say, I know the cards are good because they work everywhere else, including a USB card reader I have.

I checked Device manager and I don't see a problem. I believe the SD card reader is the "USB Mass Storage Device"?

I ran troubleshooting and it found that there is a problem with PnP devices and an "unknown device doesn't have a driver". It didn't find a solution or the driver.

I went to the Toshiba site and downloaded a couple of card reader driver versions.
Can someone please tell me the sequence, I uninstall, reboot, install new driver?

There is a program called AIDA that you can download from here:

EVEREST Ultimate Edition - PC Diagnostics | Lavalys.com

Run it and under Windows Devices look for unknown devices. Click on the unknown device and it will tell you what the device is, probably the SD Card reader. Download the drivers for it from Toshiba and install.

This is my first post here, so be gentle on me

Since the symptoms of my problem are so specific and easy to reproduce I figured I would find the answers easily.. But after a whole evening of searching on Google, I have found nothing which can help...

I have just built my new PC using an Asus M4A78 motherboard and had surprisingly few problems.

However, today I found that I have a problem with "card readers".

I have a card reader in my printer, an internal 5 slot one (which connects directly to a USB header on the Motherboard), and I also have several external ones.

What I have found is this.

1. If I connect the Card Reader to the PC when its up and running and it works (it doesn't matter if there is a card in the slot or not).. I get the 'bing bong' noise.. The reader appears (I see the drive letter) and then when I insert a card, Windows 'mounts' it and I can view the files.

2. If I Reboot the PC whilst a reader is connected (and empty), when Windows boots I see the drive letters, but when I insert a card I get an 'egg timer' in Windows and double clicking on the card letter shows "Please Insert disk into drive X:"

3. If Boot the PC whilst a reader is connected AND there is a media card (SD, CF, etc) in the slot and it works normally.. The PC boots, the card is readable and significantly, if I can remove the card and reinsert it (or insert another card) and it mounts.

So the bottom line is tha... Read more

I've seen this problem reported for other Dell machines for a year now, since Windows 10 came out, but not for my model.
Since installing Windows 10, I can't use my SD card slot to write to, format, etc. a microSD card with adaptor. I can see the drive, read the card, and transfer files from it, but when I try to write I get an error message that the disk is write protected. It isn't. The exact same cards and adaptors work fine in my son's computer, and the cards work fine in my phone.
I just updated all my drivers and it still isn't working. When will Dell finally provide a fix for this? I can't even find any indication that they're working on it.

Slot was always reliable; Inserted sd card while pc was coming out of standby mode and no longer works.  Device Manager shows PCI Device not working (PCI bus 1, device 0, function 1) but has no details on driver so it can't be found to update it.  Tried disabling then reenabling the driver with no success.  Checked sd card, can still be read in camera.  Swapped different sd cards with same result.  Slot is not damaged, think it is a driver issue.

Hello. I have a Lenovo ideapad 100s - 80R2 that I just bought a few years ago. I thought the card wasn't working. When I managed to insert the card into a USB microSD card reader, the system was able to detect the card, so it means it's working fine, but the microSD card isn't. I tried to find any updates for the SD card controller of the device, but it says it's already the latest version. Any help?

I have a AMD 7870 Dual slot video card on my Asus M5A99X-Evo Motherboard. It is installed in the first 16x slot...and I also have a PCI-e 1x XF-I Titanium Sound card. The problem I am having is that one of the 1x slots is covered by the video card, and the 2nd one is open, but right smack below the Video card. My Video card is the Sapphire 7870 GHz Edition non OC.. Attached is a picture of what I am trying to explain. My other question is: Will this cause issues since one of the GPU fans is semi covered? Its it recommended? Last question: If I move this to one of the 8x slots below on my motherboard, will it cause my 16x PCI-E slot to slow down? Thanks ahead of time for any help you can provide.

A:Question about PCI-e slot below dual slot video card

My opinion ...

Yes, setting up like that will have an impact. The air flow to your GPU will be restricted so it will more than likely run hotter than it did. It may still stay withing recommended specs, but it will run hotter.

The motherboard has onboard sound (RealtekŪ ALC892 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC ), any particular reason why you don't use that? Onboard sound is perfectly good for gaming and the like now, its not like older machines where you needed a dedicated card for decent quality. In my opinion, you only need a dedicated card if you are doing a lot of detailed audio work (mixing, remastering and other specific audio work). This would totally remove the issue.

hi there,
i need to know which know which graphic card will fit for my computer. Ie i want to know which type: DDR ,DDR1 or ddr2 i bought my computer in 2007, but thats not enough to tell.

A:which graphic card slot do i require for my PCI slot

The type of memory doesn't matter, its the type of interface the computer supports among a few other things to watch for.

You likely have a PCI-Express slot, as long as it a x16 slot it doesn't really matter if its a version 1.1 or 2.0 slot.

Is this for your Dell or another computer? Whats you budget and what needs do you have for the video card?

I have thinkpad w530 w windows 8.1 I am trying to capture video footage into my computer using a firewire card that of course plugs into the MEDIA CARD READER SLOT. I can't get the computer to recognize my camcorder- the camcorder connection does not show up in DEVICE MANAGER I am using HDVSPLIT to capture the video and also in hdvsplit there is a message, "camera not recognized" or something like that.  I am not sure if the media card reader is bad, or maybe the firewire card is bad or maybe it is the hdv split that is the problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

A:How do I tell if my Media Card Reader/Express card slot is functioning correctly?

Could it be the ExpressCard slot that the FireWire card plugs into?  I've never seen a FireWire card that plugs into the media card slot used for SD Cards.
FireWire cards can be a little tricky to get working sometimes, especially when interfacing with a camcorder.
Have you checked with the manufacturer to see if Windows 8.1 drivers are available for it?  Even if they are not, it may be possible to use Windows 7 or even Windows Vista drivers.
Once you have verified that the FireWire card is recognized, plug the camcorder in again, amd see if it gets recognized.  If it does not, check with its manufacturer for Windows 8.1 drivers, just like you did with the FireWire card.
At that point, the hardware should all be working with Windows 8.1.

Lately, My laptop is very slow in recognizing my usb stick, or my Hard drive (usb 3.0) or my sxs cards through my express card slot. It 's also slow in recognizing my sd-cards through my card reader. I have a very fast laptop. A lenovo W530.

Can somebody help?

Okay, I did something really stupid. It was late, I was in the dark, and I wasn't paying attention (obviously) so here's what happened...

I had a SanDisk 2GB Micro SD Memory Card that I was using in my cell phone.
I wanted to transfer some pics & photos from my computer to the phone, so I decided to stick it in the Express Card slot of my laptop. Simple enough, right?

....Well being the incredibly smart person that I am, I put the micro memory card in the adapter, but it was the wrong one. So my computer pretty much swallowed it whole. I can't get it back out.
Now I can't use the Express Card slot in my computer AT ALL, because the old one is still stuck in there. You can't really see it, but if you try to put another adapter in there, it won't "click". It won't go all the way because ... the old one I lost is still in there waiting to be rescued, haha.

So my question is: How do I get the memory card out of my computer??

I tried taking it apart, but I couldn't get the part of where the express card slot is, so that was no good. There's a way to do this, I know. I'm just not smart enough to figure it out on my own. Which is probably a good thing, because I might mess it up again, lol.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A215-S7416 laptop.
Any help is appreciated!

My motherboard is an Asus Socket A A7V-E board with 3 PCI slots free. Im just wondering if there is some way around this problem other than buying a pci card.

Maybe is there a ISA to PCI slot convertor or something out there?

I have searched a lot for a simple answer: where is the slot to insert a mini SD card on the Lenovo p50? I mean, it's been an interesting oddessy.  The instructions in the manual say "insert card into slot."  Not so helpful.   Usually, there are lots of videos of people doing this, but for the P50, there is nothing!  I can see in the manual the arrow pointing to the dark crevice, beneath the removable smart card reader.  The hole is dark, hard to see, and quite larger and deeper than would fit any card.  So, it's really not obvious what to do.  Just start sticking a micro SD card into this "cavern"?

A:SD card slot

Is a light coming on when you put the card in? If not, the reader may not be connected, or it may have failed. Make sure you are inserting the card into the correct slot and make sure it is facing the correct direction. Usually the label is up. If the light does not come on you may open the case and see if the reader is connected to the motherboard.

Nothing is neccessarily going to happen when you insert the card - you have to go to My Computer, then find the SD drive (it's going to be E:\ or F:\ or something similar) and view its contents.

I have read several posts about this so I will explain my problem in detail. I put the correct SD Card in the slot of my new Toshiba Satellite Lap Top. I have used it several times before without incident. I know the card works, it is the right size and I have removed it before without incident. So I clicked safely remove hardware. It said the device can now be removed. But when I try pressing it in, it doesn't release. There is no release button or little hole like on DVD drives, etc. I beleive the Windows 8 operating system may have some way to keep this from releasing while it is in use. I can not access the drive right now as Windows Explorer does not show it as being there. This is most likely because I requested to safely romove it. Any ideas? I don't feel like going to Best Buy and waiting on line for Geek Squad. Thank You.

Now I am guessing that my generic SD drive needs updates. But am afraid of screwing something up so I wont try. I figured that the card was locked or something, but I tried it in 2 different positions, and the same result.

Check the capacitors on the motherboard. Around that era of ePox motherboards, there was a big capacitor scandal overseas, and many motherboard manufacturers mistakenly used inferior capacitors, which were prone to failure. I had to replace the caps on my 8rda+ and a few others as well. They're the little 'towers' on the motherboard, and if the tops of them are bulging, then they're no good. Here's a good picture to show the difference. Check all the capacitors on the board, they're probably scattered about in different places.

Other than that, if you really think it's the slot, then there's no real way to fix it, unless you can see a faulty connection somewhere. Socket A motherboards should be pretty cheap by now, or you might want to consider upgrading the whole thing.

But I do notice that if you push in the card the release is not spring loaded and you have to pull it out quite forceably to get the card out. Hi normally this isnt normal there is a spring that normally ejects the sd card from your laptop or computer, but you can buy a external sd card reader to plug in your laptop instead of using the onboard sd card slot if easier.  Please also remember to give kudos as well. Thanks in advance.

My sd card slot has worked fine on my 4 different sd cards since 8 came out, but suddenly all cards are read only (and work fine on other computer). So I believe it is a card reader hard/soft problem.... Any thoughts? Thanks

Open up Device Manager and see if there are any Yellow ! marks on any devices.

I have Vista Ultimate x64 installed on an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop, and it has a 5-in-1 card reader. When I installed Vista, I did a clean install and before doing so, I wrote a list of the drivers I might need to get later, like my graphics card, wireless network card, etc.

I failed to write down the 5-in-1 card reader, so I don't know what model or anything it is, but it doesn't work. On my device manager, I have a section called "SD Host Adapters", with "SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller" underneath it. I use an SD card, so I would assume this is related.

However, under "Other Devices", I have three devices called "PCI FLASH Memory" and they all have a problem. I would assume this is the card slot.

Any ideas what I could do?

Also, does anyone know where I can get x64 drivers for a Synaptics PS/2 Touchpad? It works, but the scrolling features don't work.

A:SD Card Slot

I found the card was an ENE Technologies 5-in-1 card reader, and found a set of 9x, NT, 2000, XP and Vista drivers, and they work perfectly fine.

My only other problem now is the Vista x64 Synaptics touchpad drivers..

I have a camera card, wonder where to insert the card

A:camera card slot

Cullen, welcome to the forum. When requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them.  With this information I will be able to tell you if there is a card reader installed and where it is located.

I just bought a new video card for a computer in out bar, and I didn't notice that the computer's AGP slot is 4x max. (It is in a tight area, so it is one of those compact compaq desktops)

The card is an 8x AGP card and the slot is apparently 4x max. Is there a way to get this card to work in this computer? A 4x AGP low-profile video card with dual monitor output is hard to find at all, let alone something with decent RAM.

I don't remember the model of the computer off hand...I'll reply with that later. Video card is a geforce 4 128 MB DDR low-profile 8x AGP, dell part number F1811.
