Erratic mouse behavior with external mouse or touchpad on HP laptop

Q: Erratic mouse behavior with external mouse or touchpad on HP laptop

Troubleshooting a fairly new HP laptop. Had been infected with a virus. Cleaned it all up but was experiencing erratic mouse behavior. The customer claimed the behavior started when he got hit with infection. While the pointer itself moves fine the left and right mouse buttons intermittently act like they are being held down causing the pointer to drag and highlight everything in site. At other times the buttons do nothing at all. At other times the left mouse button triggers a rightclick menu. And at other moments all mouse control is fine. This occurs equally on the touchpad or when using an external USB mouse. I tried disabling the touchpad completely but the problem still occurs when using the external mouse. I tried updating the sypatics touchpad driver but that made no difference either. I finally resorted to wiping and completely reinstalling windows but the problem still persists. For the hell of it I then updated the BIOS firmware but that made no difference either. All keyboard function work fine so I have been having to resort to using the arrow keys and alt tab and such to navigate around. I ran a Passmark Burn in Test and everything passed.

A couple of additional points. I ran the Hirens Boot CD which is similar to the Ultimate Boot CD. I then booted into the Mini Windows XP and the same erratic mouse behavior occured so this is clearly not an operating system issue. Also when I wiped and reloaded Windows I used the HP Recovery partition and ran their recovery operation. Their recovery GUI also has mouse capability and I experienced the same erratic mouse behavior there.

Not sure where to go from here. Seems to be some sort of motherboard issue. Wanted some other opinions in case I am missing something.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I've had my laptop for a little over 4 months. I primarily use a wireless mouse with it...and every so often the mouse will take on a mind of its own. I can be typing or even trying to use the mouse and it will start jumping all over the screen on its own...selecting things...even switching/moving windows as if buttons are being pressed as well. At first I thought maybe it was interference with the touchpad...so I've tried both disabling the touchpad when the external mouse is plugged in...and disabling the touchpad altogether and the issue still occurs. So then I thought maybe the mouse is the issue, so at one point when it wents nuts on me, I turned it off and switched over to the touchpad...but the erratic behavior continued. The only thing I can do to fix it is to reboot...and then things are typically okay for several days before the issue starts up again. Any thoughts on what the issue maybe, or troubleshooting tips?

This worked  -  DELL  has  a terrible touchpad  - this is  a hardware issue ONLY that affects  the 3000 , 4000, 5000 and 7000 series .  I bought a screen protector from the dollar store for a dollar, this worked where all software solutions had failed.

Hi everyone!
Like you I have been having all the same touchpad issues. At first I thought it was ESD and troubleshot that for a few days. I finally concluded that it had nothing to do with ESD and moved on to possible driver issues. I installed every driver pack I could find, modified them, turned off driver signing in order to install the OEM drivers, used Windows 7, 8, 8.1, Ubuntu etc... but to no avail.
From the onset, some sort of physical problem seemed to be the most logical conclusion. The question was just what! I couldn't believe that synaptics could make such an aweful touchpad that was incapable of actually working. I made the assumption moving forward that the issue had to be caused by something small. During my last clean install of Windows 8.1 I noticed that the default windows driver caused the touchpad to be EXTREMELY sensitive. You'll notice that once you install Dell's latest driver the cursor movement calms down considerably. The touchpad is still extremely sensitive, the driver is just taking all that raw input and generalizing it into a more... Read more

Hi guys,

New here, so I hope I'm not out of line asking for help, and that I'm asking correctly. I've exhausted my own ideas on this but the problem is driving me IN.SANE.

THE ISSUE:
When using an external (USB) mouse with my ASUS Win7 laptop, the mouse randomly lifts up and re-clicks while clicking or while dragging (despite the button remaining consistently depressed), resulting in selection of the wrong objects, inadvertent double-clicks, and incorrect dragging. From what I can tell, this affects only the left click and not the right.

WHAT I'VE TRIED:
Laptop touchpad - no problem. Everything works fine with the built-in touchpad.
Another mouse - same problem. These are wired mice, so it's not a battery or connection issue.
Another USB port - same problem in all four. There's no visible issue with the motion of the mouse/cursor, so it seems to be communicating OK via USB.
Safe Mode - no problem, from what I can tell. The wired USB mouse seems to click and drag as normal in Safe Mode.
Mouse Settings - no effect. Adjusting the click/double-click/drag settings doesn't seem to change anything.
System Resources - no effect. Clicking/dragging seems to show the same results in the RAM/CPU monitors whether I'm having the problem (with the mouse) or performing the same actions without the problem (with the trackpad).

WHAT I CANNOT FIGURE OUT:
What haven't I ruled out? What else could be causing the issue?

The problem came on suddenly after about a year, but I... Read more

Hey mate, and welcome,

Possible problem:
1. Mouse itself is bad. Either the button itself or internally
2. Driver is not at its best

Try:
Going to the mouse manufacture website to download the most recent driver for your Windows 7, either 32 or 64 bit. If it doesn't work, try without any driver (so that windows driver takes over).

I have a new ThinkPad X1 Yoga 3rd gen and have issues with erratic touchpad and mouse pointer action when undocked. The pointer suddenly moves up to the browser tabs, opens a new one, just disappears for a few seconds and the like. I have not figured out a systematic behavior yet. I use Vantage to keep drivers updated and they seem to be. And I went through the mouse and touchpad settings and switched off all fancy features that I don't really need. Anybody experiencing the same or with good advice out there?

I have a Thinkpad Yoga 14 (bought from BestBuy) which I understand is identical to Thinkpad Yoga 460.  I have been using it for the last few weeks and everything was fine. In the past few days, the mouse has started behaving erratically.  Specifically: When I drag a window to move it, the mouse loses its grip half way through the motion, and then re-activates itself.  When it does that, the window I was moving stops, and the mouse clicks on (or selects) whatever happens to be below where the mouse cursor is at that moment. When I try to select some words or a paragraph in an editor, the mouse will reset itself and my selection gets reset.  I have try over and over again just to select some text (so I can do copy/paste, etc.).  Again, sometimes it will reactivate itself halpfway and select (or auto click on) random and unrelated stuff. Now, normally I am not moving the mouse very fast, or very slow.  I have varied the speed and movement but to no avail. I see this behavior with an external USB mouse (on different surrfaces), with the trackpad and trackpoint, as well as the touchscreen. It started recently and it is infuriating to say the least.  Lenovo Companion says everything is up to date and I haven't updated anything in the last couple of weeks. Has anyone seen this behavior?  I would be grateful for any recommendation to solve this issue. Thanks!

I strongly suspect malware since mouse problems began about same time pc was infected with malware and FakeHDD virus. Avira, Ad-aware, and Malwarebytes all report clean system now, however mouse still acts erratically (a simple click will often act as double-click opening multiple windows wherever the pointer was resting, drag and drop almost impossible to accomplish, etc).

I booted to safe mode, uninstalled mouse drivers, then using keyboard deleted mouclass.sys and mouhid.sys. I then scanned for hardware changes and allowed drivers to be reinstalled. Is this the correct way to reinstall the mouse drivers? Where is the system reinstalling the drivers from? The mouse behavior is still present, so, assuming malware is the culprit, I am not confident that I am performing the reinstall correctly.

fyi: mouse configuration doesn't seem to be connected with the erratic behavior.

Greetings!

About a month, month and a half ago I started experiencing my Logitech G5 mouse just turn off and then after a random amount of time turn back on. Doesn't not make for a good scenario when gaming especially in clutch moments.

The mouse is five years old and the fabric around the cord has frayed away and some of the plastic sheathing has stripped away as well. I'm figuring the the cord had a short in it. So I order a new mouse.

My new mouse a Cyborg R.A.T. 5. I must have gamed with the mouse for about a week, week and a half and then it started exhibiting similar behavior. It would turn off and not turn back on. I'd have to unplug the USB plug and then wait a few seconds and plug it back in. Some times it would work, sometimes it would not.

I've done the following:

Full virus scan with nothing foundMove the mouse (both of them) to the other three ports on the back of the PC and even the front two ports. Same behavior.100% up to date drivers and softwareSearched fruitlessly for a solution

Any of the other devices plugged in act fine! And those devices would be a web cam (not in use), printer (not in use) and my keyboard.

I've attached my msinfo32 file. I had to pair down the windows errors and program hangs back to December. If you need the whole file just let me know.

msinfo32 .txt

I'm super grateful for any help! Cause this is really un-nerving!

Extremely annoying mouse behavior.

Lenovo T520

Wireless MS mouse
Wired MS keyboard
Wired HP 425 printer

Sometimes a wireless mouse will work just fine and then it will get erratic. Moving the mouse is very laggy (like you're playing an online game and the server is being hammered). Actually clicking something on a page is very difficult and very very annoying as it is so time consuming.

It doesn't happen all the time and I can't pinpoint anything that is taxing the system and making the CPU crawl.

At this point, I have a wired trackball and it appears to be working fine, but if history proves itself my wife will start working and it will staring messing up again.

Main applications that are run are
Firefox/gmail
Quickbooks
Adobe Acrobat X
Internet connection is wired...

Maybe some sort of driver problem? I have uninstalled and installed the mouse. This happens with ANY wireless mouse.
It's not happening right now w/this trackball...but I expect it to.

Hello,

I have noticed this in the last few days. Mostly on FaceBook and reddit. When I am viewing a FB photo in an album and click the left or right arrow to advance to the next image, the next image displays. Then the mouse cursor flashes briefly and the folder advances to the next image. On reddit, when I click the plus sign on the box that expands the image, the image enlarges for a few seconds and then closes again.

I'm also noticing some strange activity in my browser ~ Chrome. I sometimes have to click the back button several times before the previous page will load. When viewing links at Amazon.com, I have to double click the back button to view the previous page. Single clicking only refreshes the same page.

I notice this only seems to be an issue with Chrome. I've updated to the most recent version and also updated Windows. I've disabled any plugins that might affect mouse functionality ~ as far as I know. I've also tried several different mice, both wired and wireless.

These are just a few issues I'm having right now. My system has been running very slow with long load times and strange surfing behavior. But the mouse problem is the most annoying. Not sure if this is a Chrome issue, a browser bug or an infection. I would love to have my system scanned to see if this or any other issues turn up.
I'm running Windows 7 SP1
Chrome Version 36.0.1985.143 m
4GB DDR2 (PC2-6400) Ram

Thank you for your time,

Everything will be working perfectly fine in my laptop, until at some point my mouse starts acting wierd. I am able to move the curser around but I am unable to click and interact with everything on the screen. I am able to open the start menu, but I am not able to minimise it. I am able to maximise the various items stacked on my taskbar, but I am not able to minimise them again by clicking the minimise button (neither am I able to close it. The title bar turns a different color when I try clicking on any of the 3 buttons) and I am also not able to select anything in the start menu with my mouse. This does not happen every time I start my laptop though. Sometimes its like this and at other times its all OK. I tried connecting my wired logitech mouse in different port but the result is the same. When this happens both the mouse and the trackpad have the same issue, so I am guessing this is not a hardware issue. I usually come out of this situation by using my keyboard to put my system to sleep and usually when I come out of my sleep a minute later the problem would be temporarily solved (the issue may come back in a few minutes or it may not come back at all).

OK, I see there are a myraid of posts concerning this issue, but no fixes. Even the HP employee gave a link that does nothing and appears broken. I purchased and installed 8GB RAM and that didn't fix it. What a waste of money. And for HP to ignore all the posts about the problem is, frankly, disingenuine, reckless and bad business. There simply MUST be a fix or workaround for this.  IF I HAVE TO BUY A NEW COMPUTER, IT WILL NOT BE AN HP. Are you hearing me, HP? My statement says a lot. I have been computing for 21 years and only ever bought HP or Compaq. I use the computer for business and the state my computer is in currently is far from a shining example of streamlined productivity. Double, triple, quadruple clicking on single click stuff, no response clicking, clicks bring up multiple duplicate windows, click for new tab and 2 tabs pop up, insert or remove SD card nets low keyboard battery warning and on and on and on. What's going on? WHAT IS THE FIX? EDIT: as with most users, this all started with the Win10 upgrade last Fall.

A few years ago, maybe back in 2014, I purchased a Dell 5547 laptop with Windows 8.1 as a gift. She tells me the system is pretty much not usable now, due to erratic mouse pointer behavior. Regardless of her using the trackpad, which she almost never does, or the wireless mouse, she tells me the mouse pointer has a mind of its own and will often click various things, without her doing anything. The problem for me is she's about 400 miles away, so I can't easily access the system myself. Furthermore, she doesn't have broadband Internet access so downloading stuff is a real pain.

In any event, I've been doing a considerable amount of reading other people's problem reports about this issue and most seem to focus on using the touchpad, which she doesn't do. Since the mouse pointer moves erratically when using the wireless mouse, I'm inclined to think it's a hardware issue where maybe there's some interference or maybe something in the trackpad is "bad" even though she doesn't use it. Before I start downloading driver updates to have her install, would connecting a wired USB mouse be worth trying? Any other ideas of things to try? The system has 8GM of RAM and an Intel Core i5 processor.

She also tells me after a reboot, the system is fine for about 30 mins to an hour, and then the mouse starts wigging out.

Thanks in advance!

Peace...

A:[SOLVED] Disable touchpad w/ external mouse

Usually there is a touchpad icon in the lower right corner of the Taskbar. You might find a setting there to disable the touchpad. Some laptops have an on/off button just above the touchpad, but you can accidentally turn it on.

You could also disable the touchpad in Hardware Manager. This is a more "permanent" solution, because you would have to go back into Hardware Manager in order to re-enable it.

You can check the users guide for your Acer product, nearly all have a shortcut to enable/disable the touchpad. If you have trouble, provide us with your model and lets see how we can help.

Because the ELAN touchpad was over-senitive (cursor jumped about), I installed an external mouse. I checked the box on the ElAN tab of the mouse device page and pressed the Apply button and it all worked beautifully. The cursors didn't jump about, just responded to the external mouse. But every time I restart my laptop, I have to go through the process again, as follows:1. Start> Device and Printers > Left-click on laptop and choose Mouse settings2. Choose ELAN. Uncheck above-described box and press Apply.3. Check above-described box and press Apply.4. Close these windows and continue. This it too much to go through. Any solutions?

I am trying to find a way that the touch pad and trackpoint will disable when I connect an external mouse.  Other computers I've used have a setting for this, but I can not find one the Carbon X1. I don't want to disable them permanently (or at least not both of them) for those few times I'm not using an external mouse. My preference would be to disable one permanently, and the other only when an external mouse is present. Thanks

A:Disable touchpad and trackpoint with external mouse on Carbon X1

Hi, mkmchughIf there is such an option available, it would be with the mouse settings. Do you see anything related to disabling them with a USB mouse connected when you go to Mouse under Control panel and go to I believe is the Thinkpad tab?

I have a Yoga 920, which replaced my Yoga 3 Pro, and I love it dearly. I have adjusted to the tiny up/down arrows OK. My only real complaint is that I keep activating the touchpad whilst typing, and since I have an external mouse that I use a lot, I don't really need the touchpad. I would like to automatically disable the touchpad whilst using the external mouse, at least when typing. I decreased the touchpad sensitivity but then the touchpad doesn't work that well when I don't use the external mouse. I can't find any place in Settings or Control Panel or any registry hacks that apply to this model of laptop that would help this. (I'm using to twiddling Synaptics settings but this laptop doesn't have any.) Thanks for any help.

I just got thinkkpad T570 (512 ssd, core i7, windows 10 pro, 16 ram, UHD).Usually the movement of touchpad is perfect, when I just move the point with doing nothing.  However, when I open pictures, setting and access to websites ( even this website), touchpad, trackpoint adn mouse are getting slower, does not move seconds, and losing the cursor, and moves sort time, this happens constantly, then eventuall, the cursor keeps freezing. I tried to move touchpad, track point and mouse, moreover, typing keyboard, nothing happens. but when I turn it off, into sleepying mode, and turn on. Then it works. Is there any solution to this issue?

I've been struggling with this issue from the begining. Basicaly the mouse pointer is jump when I try to make small movements and the problem ocurs both with the touchpad as well as a G602 external mouse. What could be causing this and how can I fix this? I've tried just about every setting available under the Windows Mouse, Touchpad settings and nothing is working. I did find the following post that seems to suggest a Realtek driver might be intefering with mouse movements. Has anyone else noticed this? With a 4K display I really need to be able to better control small movements of the mouse. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Tablet-and/Windows-10-and-jerky-mouse-Urgent-help-PLE...

A:Touchpad not working, usb mouse does, touchpad never works even w/o usb mouse

Hello Tristan,

Welcome to the forums.

Been a while since I had a laptop, but I seem to remember there being a setting on what to do with the touchpad when the mouse is plugged in. Unfortunately I don't remember where and have no way of finding it.

Have you tried rebooting with the mouse unplugged?

Sorry I can't be of more help. The manual for the laptop ought to have that info in it somewhere.

Hello guys,
I recently bought a Dell I15 5557 with touchscreen and I got a issue with its touchpad.
There is an option in Windows 10 which turns off the touchpad when an external mouse is present, but it appears that the touchscreen also counts as an external mouse. As a result, the touchpad is always disabled when this option is turned on, even if an external mouse is not connected.
Is there any way to automatically disable the touchpad when an external mouse is connected and the notebook have a touchscreen?
Thanks in advance
Hugo

New ThinkPad T440p and the first issue I encountered is there is no option to disable the touchpad when an external mouse is detected. I don't want to do it via the bios or some other hack as I use the touchpad when it is not convenient to use an external mouse. So it should be able to do the switching as needed, this is a simple feature that other manufacturers have had for years and years.  I already upgrade the UltraNav Driver to the latest v18.0.7.57 and that didn?t present a solution. I am running Windows 7 SP1 - 64bit.

A:Thinkpad T440P no option to disable touchpad when external mouse is connected

It's technically part of the driver, so try the registry edit here if you can't find the option in UltraNav settings:http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-turn-off-touchpad-when-mouse-is-connected-in-windows-78-1/

Hi,It appears I somehow deactivated my touchpad or something along those lines as my mouse pointer/cursor has completely disappeared? It was working fine yesterday, and I think the only thing that might have triggered this is that I accidentally pressed some keys (unsure of which ones, so I don't even know how to reverse it). I've tried restarting, as well as looked through some of the mouse/touchpad settings to no avail. If anyone can help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it (I'm currently relying on my fingers and the touchscreen which isn't as convenient)

Ok, as some of you know, I just bought a new MacBook Pro. I've been playing with it for the last couple of days, and I think that while the touchpad thing is nice for some things, I'd really like to get a mouse. I've been thinking about getting one of the cheaper ones, since I'll be moving around with this thing a lot, it probably won't be used all of time (in other words, it might become a hassle to get the mouse out of the bag everytime I'm in a new place.)

After playing with it I have two questions...
1. Can you use the mouse and the touchpad simultaneously? Like if I have the mouse hooked up, can I use it to scroll up and down and then use the touchpad to scroll side to side?

2. What kind of mouse is recommended...there are so many choices and variations that I don't know where to start, or even if half of them will work on a Mac. Should I get a wireless mouse? Or a corded mouse? and has anyone had much experience with the retractable cord mice?

Hi all,

Couple of issues relating to touchpad on my mouse. Initially my touchpad broke, as it only worked on occasion, including cursor disappearing and buttons not working.

I bought a mouse to override the touchpad issue and now the mouse is having problems. With the last two I've used, when using the scroll wheel, it disables the mouse. You can only use it again by using the scroll wheel. The mouse I'm currently using worked fine for a few days before developing this issue. It's really frustrating!

Any tips to fix both mouse and touchpad would be appreciated. Using Windows 7.

Cheers

Hello olipoole and Welcome to PCHF

Can you physically disconnect the touchpad?
Find your Notebook's Maintenance and Service Guide (or the equivalent name for Toshiba) and do it.
What Notebook exactly are we talking about here?

My BT mouse (microsoft presenter mouse 8000) will connect to my laptops built in bluetooth dongle just fine, and it works just fine, but the problem begins when i try to scroll.... The issue is this, I have the scroll wheel set to move one line of text per scroll in the control panel. That works absolutely fine with my touch pad, but my BT mouse it barely moves at all. I have to set it to AT LEAST 25 to get it to work the way i would like it to. So my question is... is there any way to make it so when i pair my BT mouse it automatically changes to 25? or even have a whole different setting when the BT mouse pairs?

I used to be able to just tap my touchpad mouse and it automatically selects things like the buttons do on a normal mouse. For some reason this has been disabled, some how, and i now have to move the cursor with my finger then use the buttons to click things instead of just tapping the touchpad hassle free. Any advice appreciated. Im guessing it will be the simplest of things to fix but im pretty much technology illiterate. Many thanks.

Some touchpads require specific drivers installed. Did you install these from the manufacturer? This is the integrated one on the laptop not add-in devices?
