Hotkey to change brightness

Q: Hotkey to change brightness

Hi I was wondering if there was a way to bind a key to increase/decrease brightness of my laptop screen.

I can use the regular FN+Fnkey combo but I am using an external USB keyboard so it would be easier to use a non FN key combo.
I tried reading the scan codes of the FN+F6 key but I couldn't get any, so I can't remap it with a tool like AutoHotkey.

Also, since I have the slider thing in Control Panel > Power Options, this seems doable with a software.

Last note. I do not want a 'screen dimmer' program that does not actually dim the LEDs behind the screen.

Thanks for your input!

Preferred Solution: Hotkey to change brightness

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I shut down my laptops once every week; they're either in sleep mode or hybernating. My P50 is currenly running Windows 7 Pro with all the drivers installed. I have changed bios settings such that the function keys behave as function keys and only act as media keys (or whatever they're called) when pressed in combination with the Fn key. All hotkeys work as they are intended to.However, resuming from hybernation causes only the reduce brightness key (Fn + F5) to stop performing although all other hotkeys work as they should. Pressing the F5 key by itself works normally; its just the Fn + F5 combination that doesn't work.Anyone experiencing this ?

If anyone has any ideas to what could be wrong i would glady appreciate it. I have been at this for a few days now and no answers not even from the Toshiba site.

A:Brightness Control Hotkey No Working On Toshiba P105

I assume this is the "push the Fn button and another key" thingie? If so, check to ensure that the Fn key works by pressing it and one of the other functions to see if that works.

Then test the key that you use to adjust brightness - without using the Fn key. Does that key also perform it's designated function?

This'll let you determine if it's an error with the keyboard.

A:Satellite S5200-903 Hotkey Function (Fn+F7/F6) Monitor Brightness

For this old notebook models the whole thing works a little bit different as on new models. Now you have one package that contains all necessary stuff for FN functionality.
On old notebooks like your Satellite 5200 you must install several different tools to get this FN functionality, not brightness control only.

So, to make all this easier I recommend you to check Installation instructions for Satellite 5200 and install all missing stuff. Please follow the installation order.

If you still need help let us know.

Hi folks

I wondering how do I go about changing the function of a key on my keyboard. what I really want to do is assign the paste shortcut ctrl +V to one of the Fkeys on my keyboard.

The reason I ask is I am creating measurement reports with hundreds of measurements where only the last digit of a five decimal place number changes so I am constantly jumping around the keyboard hitting a number and then back to ctrl V to paste the first four numbers again. It would be a lot easier for me if I could just punch 9 followed by F12 for example.

I'm running on XP. the only program i need this to work on is MS Word really

thanks for any help

My question is this.. Is there a way to hide or remove the "shortcuts" to the history?
The reason I ask is this.. I have a suspicion that one of my family is searching porn. I now think they have found how to open the history.
In the past I could see the history, and add any visited sites to my block host file, but since I belive they know how to open history, I can't do that any longer.

Needless to say those sites are really bad with spyware and other nasties, so I would like to know, without adding even more programs.. (Not interested in any net nanny type programs.)

We are all old enough, but it seems not all are wise enough to stay away.
If I can hide it and keep blocking the sites, maybe just maybe it can give the hint not to go there.

I'd like to change the hotkey (ctlr + H) that opens it, and hide the option under the "go" tab.
I don't think they've found it under tools yet.. at least I hope not.

Unless you know of an anti porn host file I can use.. I know it would be like 80+MB with all the sites that are out there..

I have a Logitech Y-ST39 Internet keyboard that works fine; it has seven assigned function buttons across the top of the board (Search, Files, E-Mail, WWW, Mute, - and + volume) but I've noticed that the one of them, WWW, keeps giving me the "Files" function instead of the Internet.
I've successfully re-set this several times in the Control Panel, so that all works fine, but, on rebooting, the same problem returns. as if I'd made no correction at all.
I have Windows XP Home Edition, and all other hardware (and software) works fine.
Is there something I can activate to permanently set the changes I make?
Maybe Control Panel/ keyboard is not the right place to set changes...
The keyboard came with the PC and doesn't have a separate software CD so I've unplugged and re-plugged so that it detects and installs the hardware drivers just to make sure they're the right ones, but to no avail. Everything else on the keyboard works well.

A:Logitech Keyboard hotkey settings change after reboot

By using a bit of lateral thinking, I have found a solution to this baffling problem, though not a cause for it.
When the WWW button opens Files, the path is C:\Windows\Program Files\Internet where there are some files associated with my ISP, not currently in use. By moving this folder into another (Internet Explorer), the WWW button can no longer find the folder it seeks, so its function has apparently reverted to opening the web browser as it should do.
Why it started opening files in the first place is still a mystery.

A:Cannot change brightness on 8.1

Have you checked for newer graphics drivers or graphics control settings program? If you try different drivers and System Restore works on your PC, make a Restore Point before changing the driver so you can get back to square one if things end up being worse.

Another thing you could try is checking out all the settings in the power profiles. Sometimes there is a brightness setting that may override the main setting.

If all else fails there's the old Jedi Support Trick. Boot into Safe Mode and go into Device Manager. Delete or uninstall the offending device and reboot. Windows will say "new hardware found" and install the driver that you deleted. For some weird reason this seems to fix many device issues in Windows. It works quite often and is very low risk.

I have a Compaq CQ58 laptop that I got a few years ago. I just installed Windows 7 Home Premium on it, and I have installed all of the necessary drivers off of HP's website. However, I can't seem to change the brightness. I tried holding Fn and pressing F2 and F3 to change the brightness. I clicked the battery icon on the system tray, but there was no brightness slider. I tried going to the Power Options, but still, no brightness adjustment. I'm not sure if there are some drivers that I don't have installed, or Windows 7 cannot detect that the brightness of my display can be changed. My brightness is just stuck at full brightness, and looking at the screen in the dark without being able to dim the screen eventually hurts my eyes. Thanks in advance to anyone who can solve my problem.

Hey, Guys.

I just yesterday finished my new computer (16Gb RAM, i5-4470k, GTX 770, Win 8.1, etc.) and I just today realized that I cannot change the screen brightness. The button is grayed out and says "Unavailable" which I know cannot be possible.

Now, i have done my research and people say that the fix is to update your drivers through the Device Manager, and I have tried that to no avail. I have tried all possible combinations of "Display Adapters" and "Monitors" drivers. None work. I have been restarting my computer after every change and I have no idea what there is left to do.

One thing that I might add is that a lot of people remedy this problem by reverting their Intel Integrated drives back to an older version, but I do not have an option to change it's drivers. It shows up nowhere in the Device manager.

My eyes are burning as I am typing this and I would even go for a third-party brightness program (if that even exists).

Thanks in Advance,

Hello Cam, and welcome to Eight Forums.

See if this may be able to help. If this is for a desktop PC, then you'll need to manually adjust the brightness level on the monitor itself.

Screen Brightness - Adjust in Windows 8

Read other 3 answers

I have an Acer Aspire 8930G with Windows 8.1 x64 and Windows 7 x86 as a dual-boot. I use 8.1 as my everyday OS and only boot into 7 to play older games that only work with a 32-bit OS.

Ever since I installed Windows 8, I have not been able to adjust the brightness of my screen. Note that this problem started since I installed 8, not 8.1, and before I put on the copy of 7 as a dual-boot. When I use Fn+left/right (the brightness keys on my PC), the brightness slider appears on-screen and goes up and down, but the brightness of the panel doesn't actually change. Using the Charm doesn't help either, nor does adjusting it through the Control Panel.

I have tried fiddling with my Power Options in the Control Panel and disabling adaptive brightness. I have tried several different driver versions for my GPU, a GeForce 9600M GT. None of this has helped.

In Windows 7, however, the brightness controls work fine. If I want to adjust my brightness for 8.1, I have to boot into 7, change the brightness there, and then boot back into 8.1, where it will keep whatever brightness setting I was using in 7.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Is there some messed-up thing in the Registry? Is my GPU's firmware maybe just not compatible with Windows 8? I took a look at TechPowerUp's repository of GPU BIOSes, but it appears I already have the most recent one.

I am still getting used to Win 10 on a tablet and one annoyance (system design flaw) that I would like to change is the 25% increment screen brightness in the action centre button (swipe left). 0% is way too dim and 25% is too bright in a dark room. I know I can control screen brightness better through desktop settings but that is far from convenient on a tablet. Has anybody found a hack to change the increments to say 10%? I searched the registry for "brightness" and came up with a couple possible entries (one below). But then it also kind of looked like the increment may be controlled by the dll?

Anyone nail this one yet?

Also might mention that I am aware of the keyboard shortcuts but they don't work with the on screen keyboard.

Id like to first start off by saying I apologize if this is in the wrong thread. I know a bit about computers but not a lot so I wasnt sure what thread would be best for a brightness problem.

Secondly, I know my laptop is old. I'd love to get a new one but thats not an option.

So essentially ive been this having this problem for a good long while. It just randomly acts up and then fixes when I restart my computer. I wont be able to change my brightness AT ALL.
FN keys dont work. The brightness slider (does show up) doesnt work, and trying to change from high performace to balanced doesnt work either (and yes the sliders are different in the 2 settings).

Ive looked everywhere for a solution to this problem and just cant find a thing. Either people have a different brightness problem or a different solution which doesnt work for me.

So any help would be greatly apperciated. Im hoping that since Ive come across so many other brightness problems on my search maybe someone will be able to help me with mine.
Thank you.

I'm having this strange issue that I noticed a few hours back ... for some reason when i change power plan from the taskbar batter icon, the screen brightness doesn't change, no idea why/what could trigger this as I've not updated the nvidia driver for a while now, not sure I think 6month + or so .. and it was all working fine.
Also beadvised I haven't updated windows for a while ether ... so its probably not the fact that a win update caused this as I haven't updated for a while and last I check .. and once again about 6month or maybe 8months back .. it was working fine.
Also if i right click on the batter icon "adjust screen brightness > the vertical scrollbar" .. when i move it left or right ... nothing happens.

Strange thing is .. when I use the laptop on batter or there is power outage .. the screen brightness gets reduced as it should be.

This thing really isn't effecting daily usages however as its an issue, I would like to get it fixed if possible, any ideas?
