I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Background: clone the entire contents of the HDD to a SSD with the aim to replace the HDD, including the OS.

After having cloned a HDD with Windows 7 laptop to a SDD successfully, and replaced the HDD with the SDD, resulted in a smooth boot exactly the the same procedure failed with a 2007 laptop Vista 32bit.

Procedure with support of the guidelines of the SSD Vendor (Sandisk):
1. Initialize SSD
2. Clone the entire HDD to the SSD
3. Replace the HDD with the SSD
4. Start the laptop.
5a. Result with a Win 7 laptop: OK
5b. Result with a Vista 32bit laptop: failed

Failure with Vista (I'm not that technical):

The BIOS indicates: no IDE device found.
When starting up, the message 'Operation System not found' appears

A major difference between the Win 7 and Vista laptop is the transfer mode of the (former) HDD and the new SSD: Win 7 had a SATA 300 installed, while the Vista has a SATA 150. The SSD is SATA 600.

What I did?
1) I created a ISO Vista 32bit file to get the laptop into the repair mode. This repair mode does not recognize a drive c: (checking out with the installed DOS).
So, i'm turning in circles. There is no way to get the internal SSD recognized.

2) When connecting the new SSD drive with USB to check the SSD status with the Computer Management/Disk Management tool, this is displayed:
The internal HDD (containing the system) shows: Healty (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). The USB connected SSD shows: Healty (Active, Primary Partition). Further, the ... Read more

A:No bootable device found-please enter a new boot device

Try, removing the battery, unplug the device and holding the Power button down for at least 30 seconds. Re install the hard drive, making sure of proper connection. Replace battery and Power plug, go into bios and set optimized defaults. Then see if the hard drive is recognized. Try to listen and see if the hard drive is spinning up.

Hi there guys,

Originally i had windows 7 installed on my laptop and i had four partitions on my computer.

C - Windows 7 installed system,primary parition
D - logical partition - where windows xp was installed
E - logical parition - where my documents word files and so on
K - 160gb for applications to be installed (primary partition, system)

i installed windows xp on drive D after formatting and everything was working but when i installed easybcd to add windows 7 to boot...i encountered a problem. I cannot have xp + win7 together in the boot due to windows xp installed on a logical partition and its boot file is in a unknown primary partition. I Decided to convert Drive K to Logical and Drive D(XP INSTALLED) to primary. After my computer restarted., it brought up a new error saying no boot device(S) FOUND...

i ran windows 7 setup cd to repair but no operating system was found....i ran cmd repair typed in bootrec.exe /scanos - it found windows 7 then i tried bootrec.exe /fixboot - not working, tried /rebuildmbr computer restarted but same error. I Ran windows XP CD it said no installation sources available/found that means no harddrive. however windows 7 setup repair option i saw all the drives but i can't install a freash copy of windows on any of partitions.

Can anyone help me with this problem. what i have done wrong and how can i fix a problem like this...
thanks in advance

Asad

Sounds to me that you now have no system (boot) partition. If you can't fix this (mark one of the partitions "system" or "boot") with the Windows 7 installation DVD or the XP installation CD use a bootable partitioning program, such as GParted.

A:Boot device not found

sudhanshukumar Since the PC passed the UEFI test, the drive should be OK -- which implies this is a Windows problem. You will need access to a working PC for this step in order to create the media needed to repair your PC boot loader.Once you have that, please download and create Win10 install media from this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10Yes ... I know that is for Win10, but it uses the same generation boot loader as Win8x, so it can be used to do boot loader repairs for Win8x as well as for Win10.Boot from the media you created, and follow the directions in this link:  http://www.windowswally.com/how-to-fix-error-code-0xc0000185/You will probably have to run Startup Repair three times for it to fix all the boot loader problems. When done, your PC should boot OK. Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

Hi, Shutdown the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Diagnostic Menu option ( f2 ) and run the tests on the Hard Drive. Post back with the results, including any error codes that may be generated. Can you also post back with the full Model No. and Product No. of your 15 series notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information. Regards, DP-K

A:Boot device not found

Helpkyky Wish I had good news for you -- but I don't. That error message indicates that your hard drive has failed, so you will need to replace it. Ordinarily, I would recommend using HP Recovery Media to restore your PC to its original condition. That would erase the entire drive, format the drive, and install the OS, the drivers, and the HP utilities.Unfortunately, there is no HP Recovery Media linked to the HP Product Page for your PC. This could be an oversight by HP, or it could also mean that HP no longer stocks the recovery media for your PC.You can try contacting HP Customer Support directly, using the links below, to see if you can order if from them:If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.htmlNOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!---------------------------------------However, HP Customer Support is generally not available on the weekends, so you might have to wait until Monday to contact them.---------------------------------------Good Luck

Hi, I get  the Boot Device Not Found message at startup. I've tried the diagnostic. Both quick and extensive hard disk check. Get NOT INSTALLED as the result. I did the recovery with Windows 8 step. Gives me he Repair PC option at startup. Didn't work. Gave me the Advanced option. Did the recover step. Still get the original Boot Device Not Found message upon shut down and start up. Two things: 1. How do I recover my files/data? That's all I care about.2. Or how do I fix the startup problem? Thanks! Karen

A:boot device not found

@karenba Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but according to HP, that error message means that your primary storage drive (i.e., hard drive) is in imminent danger of failing. While it could last for several more days, it could also fail immediately! The more you use the drive, the less likely you'll be able to recover anything on it.So, there are four issues to address here:1) Data Recovery2) Drive replacement3) Recovery Media4) System restoration---------- Data Recovery ----------Your best bet for recovering data now is to do the following:1) Remove the hard drive from the PC2) Purchase a USB-to-Hard Driver adapter kit3) Download and install this utility on a working PC: http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/recover_data_in_3_steps_with_minitool_power_data_recovery_free_...4) Connect the old drive to the working PC5) Run the data recovery utility to see what can be retrieved from the old drive. If that tools does not find what you need, an alternative is Recuva: http://www.piriform.com/recuvaAnd, if that does not work well, the best tool out there is this one, but only the trial version is free: http://www.file-recovery.com/---------- Drive Replacement ----------The drive will need to be replaced. A:Boot device not found

Hello @arnesto,  The BIOS can be configured to specify the order in which the computer will access available bootable hardware devices. The most common bootable devices are: Internal Hard Drive, External USB drive, Optical CD/DVD ROM Drive, and Network Adapter. During the process of checking each device for the required bootable files, if a device fails, the computer verifies that another device is available. If it checks all the listed devices but does not find the bootable files, an error message, like the following, is displayed.Boot Device Not FoundHard Disk - (#####) To resolve these boot device errors, perform the following steps in the order listed. If the computer still does not start, contact HP for assistance with this error.NOTE: If the notebook boots successfully after receiving this message running a hard drive test is strongly recommended. Reset the BIOS default settings. The configuration settings for the drive might have changed. To determine if this change has occurred and to reset the original configuration, do the following:To access the BIOS, turn on the computer and immediately press the esc key to display the Startup Menu, and then press the F10 key.Press F9 to reset the BIOS defaults, and press Enter to confirm the action.Press F10 to save the change and exit the BIOS, and then press Enter to confirm.Allow the computer to restart. Hello,
I have a dell Inspiron 3521 that I purchased in December 2013.  A couple of days ago upon starting up the computer, after the dell logo, the computer displayed, "Check Media: Fail" twice and then the following message: "NO Boot Device Found.  Press any key to reboot the machine".  I restarted the computer, pressed the F2 button to see if the hard drive was detected as as you can see on the pic below the "Fixed HDD" reads "St500LT012-1DG142 (4GB).

Then I ran the ePSA Pre-boot System Assessment and as you can see in the second pic below next to the hard drive is a blue circle with the letters "NA" even though this diagnostic tool runs to completion and states that "All tests passed".

So, what should I do?  Reseat the hard drive?  Buy a new hard drive?

Dear Customer, Welcome and Thank You for posting your query on HP Support Forum It looks like your Notebook is showing "No Boot Device Found" error messageWe will surely assist you with this issue This error message also means that the hard drive is so dead, that the notebook doesn't even know it has one installed. You need to replace the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. If you intend to repair the PC, try removing and reseating the hard drive before buying another one. Maybe the contacts are loose or oxidized The "Hard Disk [3F0] / Boot Device not found" Error message could be because of 3 things as shown below: 1. The Hard Drive or the Partition Structure of the Hard Drive could be corrupted or bad2. We need to check if the Hard Drive Data Cable which connects to the System Board has gone faulty or not. If yes we need to replace the Hard Drive Data Cable3. Bad SATA Controller on the System Board replaces the System Board or Notebook We need to perform the Hard Drive Test from the BIOS or F2 diagnostics. If you are unable to access BIOS please remove the Hard Drive and then try to access the BIOS again. Once you remove the Hard Drive boot the Notebook again and press F10 to access the BIOS. If you are able to access BIOS then the Hard Drive is bad Please perform the below shown step if required:Remove the Hard Drive from you Notebook and test it out on a different Notebook. In order to help you, you need to post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact mb, exact cpu, exact pw supply, etc, etc. If this is a big box system ie dell, hp, whatever, post the exact make and model# If you have a service tag, post that as well.

It does sound like your hd has failed or possibly a failed cable, loose pw connector, etc. You can test the drive with the drive mfg's diagnostic. You download this from whomever mfg the drive. Since your system will not boot from the hd, you need the dos or boot version [it runs from bootable media]

Please be patient with me. I am absolutely ignorant when it comes to all things techie.

I have an HP Pavilion TouchSmart with windows 8. Model number 14-b109wm. Yesterday my laptop was working perfectly. This morning when I tried to turn it on I got a message saying, "Boot device not found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk." I clicked F2 for system diagnostics and ran two tests for the hard drive. The "quick test" said "passed." So I ran the "extensive" test and it said "not installed." I dont know what any of this means or how to fix it. I called HP and the lady barely spoke english. She said the hard drive needs to be re-seated. Again, dont know what that means. The F8 and F12 keys dont work either. Can someone tell me what is wrong with my laptop and how to go about fixing it. I would be happy to supply any other information you may need.

Hi, I recently installed a new hard drive in my laptop since my old one messed up, and now eveytime I turn on my computer it tells me that "Boot Device Not Found Please Install an operating system on your hard disk". I've also tried system recovery by hitting f11 but that doesn't work also. What should I do?

Sfaisalshah Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about not being able to boot and wanted to help -- but need more information. You said you "installed" a new drive in your laptop -- but that tells me nothing about the details.  Other than inserting the drive into the laptop, what else did you do? Please provide some details. Also, we need to know the detailed product number of the laptop, so please follow these directions: Finding Your HP Product Model Number | HP® Customer Support Also need to know what OS version you are using.  And, if it's Win10, did that come preinstalled on the laptop, or did you do the Win10 Upgrade? We can proceed once you provide the information. Thanks

I need help with Boot Device Not Found. I've looked at the www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup and it didn't help me one bit. I went to the find my computer then I went to troubleshooting then to Startup and Shut down then clicked the Startup option. I found the hyperlink that said Boot Device Not Found and I tried all of the steps. For the first step I tried to force restart and I did all of the steps and it didn't work for me. It always came back to the black screen with Boot Device Not Found on it. The second one is just setting the BIOS back to normal settings and I did that and guess what. Nothing happened. The one after that which is testing the hard drive using the HP PC Hardrive Diagnostics UEFI. So I followed the video and it says to turn off your computer then turn it back on and click F2 repeatedly, so I did. I see text in the bottom left that says F2...PC Diags or something like that. So that looked promising so I waited and it brought me back to the black screen with Boot Device Not Found on it and when I clicked F2 again at that screen it doesn't bring me to the right thing. Then I was off to do Step 4 which is reseat the hard drive. I did that and nothing happened. So now I had only one more option and that was Step 5 System Recovery. I watched the video and I did as it says, which is turn off computer and then turn it back on and when you turn it on click the F11 button repeatedly. I did as told and it did the same thing as when I clicked F2, it took me back to t... Read more
