USB device not recognized - but there is no usb device connected

Q: USB device not recognized - but there is no usb device connected

It's recognized in device manager as "Unknown device". But I've not connected anything to pc. Also all of my usb ports are working at 1.1 speed. When I try to connect any device, I get the message "that it could work faster, if i connect it to hi-speed usb port".

Any suggestions?

Preferred Solution: USB device not recognized - but there is no usb device connected

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: USB device not recognized - but there is no usb device connected

It could be two unrelated issues.
1. You could have a device that needs a driver.
2. Some motherboards use a mixture of 1.1 and 2.0 ports, so that's the reason for the message.

You could check to see if you can get a hardware id for the device, from the device manager.

I'm about to loose my mind..
So today I've pluged-in an Arduino device and everything gone great until for some unknown reason my computer just ignored the device and started to pop-up "USB device not recognized" the same device works perfectly fine in my other computer.. after trying, I think, everything, including deleting all usb devices in "dev_show_nonpresent_devices=1" mode.

Desperately, encourged with a long time's will upgrding my OS, I've formatted the primary partition and installed all clean windows 8 (don't worry, everything is legal).

Surprisingly enough, the same problem continues, but with a twist, in the device manager I have a persistent "Unknown USB device (port reset faild)", with no external usb connected.

All the other unknown devices' drivers I've found and updated.

I have "HP Compaq 6703b" laptop with Windows 8 64 bit.

Thanks for reading and sorry for my english,
Hope anyone could help

Hello everyone,
i hope you can help me sorting out this issue that is causing me a hard headache at the moment.

I've bought this new Lenovo Z50-70 laptop with windows 8.1 preinstalled on it. Fresh new.

I'm trying to connect via usb a guitar audio interface (Line6 POD HD500) so i installed the drivers via the .exe setup file i downloaded from Line6's site.
The device worked fine on my previous HP pavilion with windows 7.

Now when i completed the installation, i connected it and i had this error:Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)A request for the USB device descriptor failed.
I used slimdrivers to update all the other drivers, in case it was a conflict causing the error.
I checked via command prompt with command "pnputil -e" and i saw a driver from the vendor of the device listed, so it is installed correctly i think.
I tried all USB ports i have, 3.0 and 2.0 on one side of laptop and 2.0 on other side.

When on device manager, if i click update drivers and choose the "let me pick from a list of device drivers.." i don't see the company name of the device.

i saw that another guy posted a really similar problem on SevenForum and he figured out how to force windows to use the drivers but he didn't post the solution.. Here is the post: Can't get Windows 7 x64 to use the drivers I've installed repeatedly Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums

I have a Dell notebook, with what I believe is a USB 1.1 port on it. I recently bought a Microsoft wireless notebook optical mouse. There is no installation CD with it, you are just supposed to plug it in and it should work. Well when I do that, I get an error comes up saying USB device not recognized. When I look at the properties it says "no drivers are installed for this device", and I have the device usage as enabled. I've tried updating the driver and it says I have the most recent updates installed. It comes up as an unknown device as well.

Other things like my printer work in this USB port, so I don't think the port itself is defective. I also plugged the mouse into another computer and it works with no problems. I am running on XP with SP2 installed.

The product specs say it should work on USB 1.1 or 2.0, so I don't think that is the problem either. Any ideas? I've gone through all of the troubleshooting with no luck.

This has become a great annoyance to me.

Whenever I have my keyboard and mouse plugged into my computer (the mouse uses a USB port on the KB (it's a G-15)) I keep getting messages of "USB Device Not Recognized", however, the mouse and keyboard work perfectly fine. It's not really a problem, it's not restricting me, but it is extremely annoying.

Any solution to this problem?

Note: I recently re-installed Windows (literally about an hour ago), it did not do this beforehand.
Note 2: I have tried to restart the computer.

A search turned up some easy things.

Does this happen coming out of sleep or hibernate?

I think you said you rebooted - no change. If you haven't rebooted, give that a go.

Last one: right click on the device in Device Manager and select "Scan for update". Could be the USB, mouse or kb - scan all asscociated devices

I have a PC which is having a lot of trouble recognizing a USB data acquisition device. Starting from a situation where the PC *does* recognize the device, here is the basic pattern:

1. PC shows device in Device Manager under "Data Acquisition Devices".

2. If the PC is power-cycled via the power plug itself, the device is no longer recognized under Device Manager ("Unknown Device").

3. If the PC is power-cycled via Start Menu --> Turn Off, same results as above, no longer recognized.

4. If the PC is power-cycled via Start Menu --> Restart, no problems, device recognized.

When the device is not recognized, unplugging and replugging the USB cable makes no difference to the situation. In order to correct the issue, I disable and then enable via Device Manager (which also involves a restart).

This pattern is extremely repeatable.

I am working with WinXP SP2, Pentium, 2.8 GHz, 504 MB RAM.

This PC was returned from a customer site - the PC and USB device are used in a machine my company manufactures. Apparently this issue just started happening one day. We want not only to correct the issue, but in fact to understand the root cause and ensure it will not happen again in the future.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

A:USB Device Recognized / Not Recognized based on shut-down method

You could try reinstalling the usb drivers.
JohnWill has fix that is worth a try

Johnwill's solution

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the instructions.

I upgraded to Windows 10 a while back. Every time I open the computer I get a pop-up notification telling me the USB device is unrecognized. I have no USB devices in any of my 3 USB ports.
I sent my computer in twice. No help. They just uninstalled everything and reinstalled everything and told me it should be fixed. It is not. I then went about updating every driver in my Device Manager. I uninstalled the Unknown USB Device and then updated
other drivers. Certain drivers (such as PCI Express Root Port #3 - 9C14) when updating would also reinstall the Unknown USB Device, which I would then uninstall and keep working down the list. At the end of updating EVERYTHING I scanned for hardware changes
and "found" the Unknown USB Device.
From what I can tell, and I know very little about this stuff, my computer can't name one of my USB ports. Since it can't figure out what it's called it can't download the proper driver for it. Since it can't download the proper driver it can't work properly.
The practical result from this is that one of my three USB ports does nothing when I put in any USB item (connect my android phone, thumb drive, presentation clicker, etc).
I've looked on tons of forums. My current thought is that if I can tell my computer what the deice is or download the right driver and tell my computer to use that driver for this device it should solve my issue. But I don't know how to know what the name
of the USB port should be (I imagine it woul... Read more

Hello everyone..
Yesterday my laptop pushed a new Win 10 update, and all went fine, or at least I think so.
But today I see that my Sony WALKMAN - which I used with no problem until now, can't be recognized anymore.

Basically it just shows as (E or Usb Drive E: but when I click it it says "Please insert a disk into E:/" like there is nothing there.

Now the interesting part is.. if I go to Device Manager I see it and clicking on properties etc t says it's working fine.

But if I go to Disk Management, the Drive shows as 14 gb of unallocated space and it's greyed out.

However, if I put it on my brother's laptop, it works perfectly and it can be opened, music moved into it etc - it shows as Healthy - Primary Partition in Disk Management. So it doesn't seem broken...

It's the same on each of the 4 usb ports btw. But, other usb devices (2 phones, 1 tablet) don't have any issue and are detected.

What could have caused this? I tried the basic Disable/Enable in Device Manager and also Uninstall Driver.. It doesn't do anything, it appears back when I replug it in.

No change in Safe Mode and no change after sfc /scannow

If anyone has any idea I'd be happy to try anything to fix this..

This problem is being reported by many forum members with many different USB devices. It seems that Windows 10 Anniversary is having problems properly recognizing certain USB drives and devices. So far, no one has come up with a clear fix for this issue but it sounds like it is clearly related to the Anniversary update. For the record, I did a clean install and have not had any issues but most of the people reporting this problem make reference to updating to Anniversary.

Hi guys!!

I've been meaning to ask some help regarding the issue that I am having however I was reluctant because of the fact that I fix computers for a living(I'm not that good at it though..).

I need help!!

I've been getting "USB device not recognized". I got the issue after purchasing a new power supply. I think my motherboard is fried. But I need your opinion guys. Here are the things that I did.

- went to device manager and uninstalled everything under USB controllers
- dismantled my computer to the very last piece and put everything back after an hour of waiting. (i made sure that the power was drained)
- put back my old power supply thinking that the new PSU that I bought was damaged

When I plug it in, it just says "USB device not recognized". I tried plugging my usb to a different computer and it was not working anymore. I did a little experiment and tried a good USB device on another computer. It worked well, for sure. I plugged it in mine, it said "USB device not recognized". Plugged it back in the computer that detected it earlier and BAM! It won't detect it anymore. Power surge I guess??? I am not sure...

Please Please Please.. I need your help on this guys..

1. Is my motherboard fried?
2. Is there a way for me to fix the devices that I plugged in my computer?

Many Thanks!!!

I have a customer with a new notebook computer running Windows XP. It's a custom built computer from Nobilis, so I don't have a model number to provide. Hi guys, first time on the SevenForums so go easy on me I consider my self pretty savvy when it comes to computers, but this problem made me question myself. Today while I was repairing my friend's virus-infested laptop, I've made a terrible mistake - I used my very own USB flash drive on his laptop. I was a bit too late when I came to realize this, and his laptop could no longer identify my flash drive.

First off, I thought that this might be his computer's problem, but it wasn't. I tried plugging it into my own computer when I get home, and the computer would not recognize it.

For troubleshooting, I did the following.Plugging it into different USB ports on my computer.
Restarting the computer
Plugging it into another computer
Plug a different USB drive.
I've come to a conclusion that only the flash drive that I used to plug into my friend's computer was not working. Of course I did a virus scan after the troubleshooting - it gave me 5 infections from Trojan Generic and 2 from Trojan Downloader.

My first guess is that the viruses made my flash drive went kaput, and that I will need to reformat it. But now the computer could not even recognize the drive.

I will appreciate you guys' help.

Here is my problem. Every Mass Storage device I put in the USB slots, came with the message USB not recognized...

It happened yesterday, when I plugged in the external hard disk into back USB slots. Hard disk works at other computer normally. Then I powered on my front USB slots (ther were turned off for couple of monts), put the phone, and it normally showed memory storage. Then I plugged hard disk into front slots, and it came with error. Then I again plugged phone in, but now I get the USB Device not recognizad, which is really weird, cause it worked a minute ago.

I tried every possible solution I googled, uninstalling SMS Bus Controllers, reinstalling chipset drivers and so on.

Weird thing is that Mass Storage devices aren't working on Windows 8 which is on the other partition within the same hard disk.

To mention, that all USB slots have normal power, hard disk is getting the power, phone is charging, Wireless Adapter is also working normally. I really don't know what could be the problem.

Is it possible that this hard disk could somehow insert some wrong data, because he is the source of this plague

Thanks in advance, waiting for suggestions

A:USB Device not recognized

Couple of questions. Does the external hard drive have its own power supply? Have you tried plugging the drive in without the phone charging? You may be drawing too much current from the 5 volt supply in your computer charging a phone and plugging in am external hard drive without a separate power supply.
Your English is good.

Welcome to TSF....

It seems that this might be a standard for Dell telling people to rebuild the system from scratch, sort of leaves a bit to be desired.

Have you tried the card reader on another computer to see if it works correctly there?

Also try the card reader on another USB port on your computer or get a USB hub and try it on the hub.

"USB Device not recognized: One of the devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."

This happens when I try to connect either of my smartphones (iPhone 4s, Galaxy s3) to my computer. The computer pretends like it's noticed that there's something there, then either chooses to ignore it or informs me that it doesn't recognize it. The phones think they're connected then disconnected then reconnected, ad infinitum. It's not the phones, I can connect them to a different computer with no problems. I can also connect and use a printer with my USB ports, so I don't think it's the ports either. Thus, some computer issue which I am too nooby to fix myself.

I've tried absolutely everything the Internet has to offer with this problem (uninstall USB driver and restart computer with device still attached, for example) but the problem stubbornly persists. Any further ideas about what to do would be fantastic. Thanks

I posted a similar message under Hardware, but am getting no responses, so thought I'd try here.

Main question: What would cause a relatively new HP Media Center computer to recognize other things inserted into any of the USB ports in the front (for example, a jump drive), but NOT recognize one device (a Lowrance iWAY 500c GPS car navigation device) that is readily recognized when it's plugged into a different computer?

The HP computer is a friend's. The "different computer" is mine, a custom machine from Puget Systems with a P4 on an Asus MoBo. On the friend's computer, we get a "bubble" message from the taskbar to the effect that the device is not recognized -- so it knows something is plugged in, but apparently doesn't have the driver for it. Her system is running Win XP and I assume (but don't know for sure) that she's kept up with Windows updates.

When I check MyComputer, the Lowrance isn't on the list. In Device Manager, it's listed as "Unknown device".

I'm wondering about things like the HP lists a pot full of drives because it has all the camera card slots, etc. in the front panel (I think the drives go all the way up to J:, almost all of which are "removable drives".

Any ideas?

Hi All,

I have come here searching for the solution to the exact same problem. "USB device not recognized".

I have recently purchased an ASUS G750 laptop. For the first 5 days it worked fine. I had my phone linked with bluetooth and running a USB mouse and headset.

Woke up one morning... stagger over to my laptop to check email etc and BAM no mouse or working headset.

I have tried all three of my headsets with it and 3 mice and none work, however they all work on my wife's laptop. It is also stange how no USB thumb drives works... Initially I thought it was a hardware fault, but when I plug in my portable HDDs they all work fine.

I ended up reformatting the system back to factory defaults, but the problem still persists.

If I look it up under Device Manager the faults listed there show as:

Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)

Two days after all this occurred I had to go to work (work offshore) and decided to take my laptop with me (better than nothing right) with the idea that I could buy a bluetooth mouse and headset at the airport on the way to work to cover me until I got back and sort out a qualified tech. This was purchased, only to find once arriving at work that my bluetooth can no longer be found (assumed not working) and when i try to launch my camera it ask me to install one.

I don't know if all these issues can all be in some way related to the original USB issue or if there is just a general driver glitch, but I ... Read more

I have a weird problem.

I recently bought a cheap USB Hub off eBay. I plugged it in and connected my devices and it always works.

However, about 75% of the time when Win 8 boots, I get about a dozen "USB connect/disconnect" sounds and a window that says "USB Device not recognized". (sometimes 3 or 4 of these windows)

I've searched for this issue but every post that I find provides a recommendation for a USB device that is not working. None of these suggestions applies because after all the boot noise, the hub and it's devices work. It just seems like Win 8 is having trouble recognizing the Hub but keeps trying and eventually succeeds.

The Hub is plugged into a USB 2 port with a scroll wheel mouse and a Dymo LabelWriter 400 connected to the hub.

Any suggestions?

A:USB Hub - USB Device not recognized

What happens when you do not have any devices connected to it ? It's most likely it is recognizing those devices, not the hub itself.

I'm recieving the following error "USB device not recognized". I have attempted many fix recommendations I have seen posted aroun the internet with no luck. My usb ports were working fine previously with xp and vista installed on my system. I installed windows 7 and they were working fine until the very first update for windows 7 was installed. Since the update I have been unable to use any usb products(printer, iphone, etc...) other than my mouse and keyboard. I have attempted to uninstall the update. I have also attempted to install windows xp, vista, and windows 7 and have had no luck with any version.

I don't know what information I could provide that would assist anyone in helping me. If I need more info posted, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate any help provided.

What about USB devices that have their own drivers? Open up device manager (start > run > devmgmt.msc > action menu > scan for hardware changes)

While working on my laptop yesterday evening, my mouse & external hdd stopped responding. On ejecting & re-inserting them both started getting this message 'USB Device Not Recognized'.

Now none of my three USB ports are working. Though on cross checking, the devices are working on other machine.

The message is getting flashed repeatedly. Also, observed that my battery got drained while it was switched off throughout the night. Have never faced either of these issues with almost 20months of working with W7 Pro.

Pls assist.

Welcome Parry,

I'm sorry to hear about your problems your having!

Have you unplugged the power cord/charger and then remove the battery completely with the PC off. Give it a good minute or so then reconnect both and reboot

Also check the device manager for any devices (esp. USB related) that have yellow or red symbols on their icon, when nothing is plugged in the usb ports

additionally if you have media card slots check them since they are merely a usb channel, just like the others. - I'm not too sure if the battery has usb connect, i don't think Ive ever heard of that (you know to sense and adjust the power required)

Many internal wireless network cards run off a usb channel so check and see if you have wireless support (assuming you have a wireless transmitter)

Although there are other possible scenarios, that other members will surely offer in time, from the symptoms you described there is, in my opinion:
almost certainly a hardware issue.
it probably involves 1 of 3 things.
A loose or bad contact (corroded over time) or wire connecting the USB ports to the MOB
A problem with at least one of the rails in the power supply, (may also account for battery issue) [Check power levels in bios setup if possible - although sensors aren't always correct either]
a "burnt-out" USB controller IC, or similar issue with a piece literally soldered on the MOB. [albeit, a worst case scenario]

Remember everything breaks, it's just a matter of when, and how bad. Some HD... Read more

My problem is can be understood by reading this windows xp article. Im running xp with SP1A. The dll s in question on my PC are not at the recommended version even though I have the SP s installed . Anyone have any ideas? Is it possible to just obtain the latest dll s and copy them to the correct location?

A:usb device not recognized

If you can find the dll's and download them, yes you can replace them.

You will likely need to do it in "safe mode" or access will be denied.

Rename the old ones to dllname.old for safety sake so you can revert if needed.

I have an Inspiron 600M. I have had it about 6 weeks now and for the most part, I love it. About 2 weeks ago, however, I started getting a ?USB Device Not Recognized? message. The problem is there is not a USB device, or any other device, plugged in when it does this. The message comes up and goes away about 5 to 10 times, then it stops for awhile and starts it all over again. Getting to be very annoying. Help.

Hi! Suddenly started to get "USB device not recognized error". It occurs every 5 sec followed by "plugged" and "unplugged" sounds, just like u r trying to plug and then immediately unplug something. I found kinda workaround: unplug from the outlet, remove all the usb devices, wait a minute and then power on, login and plug in all the devices back. But it works until the next shut down. Then I have to do it again. All the usb devices (usb cam, speakers, usb3 drive, mouse & keyboard, usb2 extender with wifi dongle on it) work. Please help me! This is at work video editing pc so I really suffer from the "pu-bum" sound every 2.5 sec.

I have Win7 Pro 64bit
ASUS p8p67 mobo

A:USB device not recognized every 5 sec

Hi there .. Just as a test remove some of the USB Devices and see how it goes .. What sort of Video editing do you do is it on a very large scale .. Also have a look at the Motherboards website and see if they have a BIOS update .. I do not normally recommend this . But it could provide more Stability

Windows is driving me nuts with this pop up message:

"USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."

When I follow instructions to fix the problem it says, "Try to reconnect the device. If Windows does not recognize it, replace it."

I don't have anything connected to the USB port they indicate and my system seems to be operating okay.

I just want to block the pop up message and move on. Clicking the close button only closes it for a few minutes, and then it pops up again.

I have a Dell Dimension 9150 and Windows XP Home Edition.

My usb just stop working on me yesterday. No matter what kind of usb device I plug in, it just doesn't work. I've tried uninstalling my usb drivers and still nothing. Also when I plug my thumb drive in, it's starts off turning blue(2.0), then turns red(1.1), then turns off, and USB Device Not Recognized pops up. Also when I go to Device Manager, under Non-Plug and Play Drivers, Parport has a yellow explanation mark by it. Serial under Non-Plug and Play has an yellow explanation next to it. I have a Dell Inspiron 5160. 2 usb ports. Both nothing is working. I just remember my internet explorer started acting funny about a week ago. I have been using firefox ever since. Until recently my usb scanner, camera and thumb drives (1,2 and 4GB) worked fine...about two weeks ago I started receiving the error message "USB device found" then "Installing your USB device" followed by "USB device is working properly" and then immediately afterwards the error message "USB device not recognized".

Within Device Manager it shows one controller as "Enhanced" so I'm assuming from what I've read that that means USB 2.0 drivers are installed. I've Googled the error message and followed several how-to's but still to no avail.

SP2 Q - how do I tell if I have it installed...within Add/Remove it shows many updates but nothing that says specifically SP2. I've downloaded SP2 but not sure I should/want to open that can of worms (after reading about program compatibilty problems)....any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

1) None of my USB devices work.
2) Do I have Service Pack 2 installed?

A:USB device not recognized and SP2 Q...

Not absolutely certain, but I believe most older motherboards require Service Pack 2 to enable USB 2 support. The older Socket 939 motherboard I had required SP 2 to enable that support. The P35 chipset motherboard I have now has the support built into the motherboard. Follow this link for instructions on how to determine the service pack you have. If you do not have service pack 2 installed, I strongly suggest you download and install it.

Good luck.
