USB device not recognized - but there is no usb device connected

Q: USB device not recognized - but there is no usb device connected

It's recognized in device manager as "Unknown device". But I've not connected anything to pc. Also all of my usb ports are working at 1.1 speed. When I try to connect any device, I get the message "that it could work faster, if i connect it to hi-speed usb port".

Any suggestions?

Preferred Solution: USB device not recognized - but there is no usb device connected

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: USB device not recognized - but there is no usb device connected

It could be two unrelated issues.
1. You could have a device that needs a driver.
2. Some motherboards use a mixture of 1.1 and 2.0 ports, so that's the reason for the message.

You could check to see if you can get a hardware id for the device, from the device manager.

I'm about to loose my mind..
So today I've pluged-in an Arduino device and everything gone great until for some unknown reason my computer just ignored the device and started to pop-up "USB device not recognized" the same device works perfectly fine in my other computer.. after trying, I think, everything, including deleting all usb devices in "dev_show_nonpresent_devices=1" mode.

Desperately, encourged with a long time's will upgrding my OS, I've formatted the primary partition and installed all clean windows 8 (don't worry, everything is legal).

Surprisingly enough, the same problem continues, but with a twist, in the device manager I have a persistent "Unknown USB device (port reset faild)", with no external usb connected.

All the other unknown devices' drivers I've found and updated.

I have "HP Compaq 6703b" laptop with Windows 8 64 bit.

Thanks for reading and sorry for my english,
Hope anyone could help

Hello everyone,
i hope you can help me sorting out this issue that is causing me a hard headache at the moment.

I've bought this new Lenovo Z50-70 laptop with windows 8.1 preinstalled on it. Fresh new.

I'm trying to connect via usb a guitar audio interface (Line6 POD HD500) so i installed the drivers via the .exe setup file i downloaded from Line6's site.
The device worked fine on my previous HP pavilion with windows 7.

Now when i completed the installation, i connected it and i had this error:Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)A request for the USB device descriptor failed.
I used slimdrivers to update all the other drivers, in case it was a conflict causing the error.
I checked via command prompt with command "pnputil -e" and i saw a driver from the vendor of the device listed, so it is installed correctly i think.
I tried all USB ports i have, 3.0 and 2.0 on one side of laptop and 2.0 on other side.

When on device manager, if i click update drivers and choose the "let me pick from a list of device drivers.." i don't see the company name of the device.

i saw that another guy posted a really similar problem on SevenForum and he figured out how to force windows to use the drivers but he didn't post the solution.. Here is the post: Can't get Windows 7 x64 to use the drivers I've installed repeatedly Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums

I have a Dell notebook, with what I believe is a USB 1.1 port on it. I recently bought a Microsoft wireless notebook optical mouse. There is no installation CD with it, you are just supposed to plug it in and it should work. Well when I do that, I get an error comes up saying USB device not recognized. When I look at the properties it says "no drivers are installed for this device", and I have the device usage as enabled. I've tried updating the driver and it says I have the most recent updates installed. It comes up as an unknown device as well.

Other things like my printer work in this USB port, so I don't think the port itself is defective. I also plugged the mouse into another computer and it works with no problems. I am running on XP with SP2 installed.

The product specs say it should work on USB 1.1 or 2.0, so I don't think that is the problem either. Any ideas? I've gone through all of the troubleshooting with no luck.

This has become a great annoyance to me.

Whenever I have my keyboard and mouse plugged into my computer (the mouse uses a USB port on the KB (it's a G-15)) I keep getting messages of "USB Device Not Recognized", however, the mouse and keyboard work perfectly fine. It's not really a problem, it's not restricting me, but it is extremely annoying.

Any solution to this problem?

Note: I recently re-installed Windows (literally about an hour ago), it did not do this beforehand.
Note 2: I have tried to restart the computer.

A:"USB Device Not Recognized" but the device is working fine.

A search turned up some easy things.

Does this happen coming out of sleep or hibernate?
Does this happen in another USB port
I think you said you rebooted - no change. If you haven't rebooted, give that a go.

Last one: right click on the device in Device Manager and select "Scan for update". Could be the USB, mouse or kb - scan all asscociated devices

That's all I have,

I have a PC which is having a lot of trouble recognizing a USB data acquisition device. Starting from a situation where the PC *does* recognize the device, here is the basic pattern:

1. PC shows device in Device Manager under "Data Acquisition Devices".

2. If the PC is power-cycled via the power plug itself, the device is no longer recognized under Device Manager ("Unknown Device").

3. If the PC is power-cycled via Start Menu --> Turn Off, same results as above, no longer recognized.

4. If the PC is power-cycled via Start Menu --> Restart, no problems, device recognized.

When the device is not recognized, unplugging and replugging the USB cable makes no difference to the situation. In order to correct the issue, I disable and then enable via Device Manager (which also involves a restart).

This pattern is extremely repeatable.

I am working with WinXP SP2, Pentium, 2.8 GHz, 504 MB RAM.

This PC was returned from a customer site - the PC and USB device are used in a machine my company manufactures. Apparently this issue just started happening one day. We want not only to correct the issue, but in fact to understand the root cause and ensure it will not happen again in the future.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

A:USB Device Recognized / Not Recognized based on shut-down method

You could try reinstalling the usb drivers.
JohnWill has fix that is worth a try

Johnwill's solution

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the instructions.

I upgraded to Windows 10 a while back. Every time I open the computer I get a pop-up notification telling me the USB device is unrecognized. I have no USB devices in any of my 3 USB ports.
I sent my computer in twice. No help. They just uninstalled everything and reinstalled everything and told me it should be fixed. It is not. I then went about updating every driver in my Device Manager. I uninstalled the Unknown USB Device and then updated
other drivers. Certain drivers (such as PCI Express Root Port #3 - 9C14) when updating would also reinstall the Unknown USB Device, which I would then uninstall and keep working down the list. At the end of updating EVERYTHING I scanned for hardware changes
and "found" the Unknown USB Device.
From what I can tell, and I know very little about this stuff, my computer can't name one of my USB ports. Since it can't figure out what it's called it can't download the proper driver for it. Since it can't download the proper driver it can't work properly.
The practical result from this is that one of my three USB ports does nothing when I put in any USB item (connect my android phone, thumb drive, presentation clicker, etc).
I've looked on tons of forums. My current thought is that if I can tell my computer what the deice is or download the right driver and tell my computer to use that driver for this device it should solve my issue. But I don't know how to know what the name
of the USB port should be (I imagine it woul... Read more

Hello everyone..
Yesterday my laptop pushed a new Win 10 update, and all went fine, or at least I think so.
But today I see that my Sony WALKMAN - which I used with no problem until now, can't be recognized anymore.

Basically it just shows as (E or Usb Drive E: but when I click it it says "Please insert a disk into E:/" like there is nothing there.

Now the interesting part is.. if I go to Device Manager I see it and clicking on properties etc t says it's working fine.

But if I go to Disk Management, the Drive shows as 14 gb of unallocated space and it's greyed out.

However, if I put it on my brother's laptop, it works perfectly and it can be opened, music moved into it etc - it shows as Healthy - Primary Partition in Disk Management. So it doesn't seem broken...

It's the same on each of the 4 usb ports btw. But, other usb devices (2 phones, 1 tablet) don't have any issue and are detected.

What could have caused this? I tried the basic Disable/Enable in Device Manager and also Uninstall Driver.. It doesn't do anything, it appears back when I replug it in.

No change in Safe Mode and no change after sfc /scannow

If anyone has any idea I'd be happy to try anything to fix this..

A:USB device not recognized on my laptop but recognized in other pcs/lap

This problem is being reported by many forum members with many different USB devices. It seems that Windows 10 Anniversary is having problems properly recognizing certain USB drives and devices. So far, no one has come up with a clear fix for this issue but it sounds like it is clearly related to the Anniversary update. For the record, I did a clean install and have not had any issues but most of the people reporting this problem make reference to updating to Anniversary.

My problem is can be understood by reading this windows xp article. Im running xp with SP1A. The dll s in question on my PC are not at the recommended version even though I have the SP s installed . Anyone have any ideas? Is it possible to just obtain the latest dll s and copy them to the correct location?

A:usb device not recognized

If you can find the dll's and download them, yes you can replace them.

You will likely need to do it in "safe mode" or access will be denied.

Rename the old ones to dllname.old for safety sake so you can revert if needed.

Firstly, sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I wasn't sure where to put it.

For the last week or so I keep getting this error message in the bottom left hand corner of my screen.

"USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"

After clicking on it I get another window which consists of "USB Root Hub (2 Ports) and a drop down of Unused Port and Unknown Device. I have attached screenshots of this to help.

The only things connected by USB are my Wireless Adaptor, Speakers, Mouse, Keyboard and occasionally printer. Everything seems to be working fine so I can't see the problem, probably something simple that I'm missing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go into the Device Manager and see if you see any yellow question marks. If so post a screenshot.

Try unplugging each USB item until the issue goes away seeing which is the issue.

This has been a problem for some time now, and one by one all of my flash drives seem to be malfunctioning. When I insert the devices into the USB port it comes up with the message on the bottom right side of the screen saying "USB device not recognized" and when I click on it it says to "reconnect the device, if Windows still does not recognize it, then please replace the device".

I have tried various methods on the internet and I have also tried inserting it onto other computers but it seems to be the actual device and not the USB port that is the problem. What annoys me the most is that I was about to make a backup of the data on another flash drive, and I am really hoping I can recover it (about 13 years of photos etc. on there).

It must be the connecter as when I insert the device it vibrates and I can hear the disc (or whatever it is) spin and it even makes the sound on the computer (at least its picking it up) yet when I access My Computer there is nothing there. Intrestingly when I unplug it for a short period of time a folder comes up titled something along the lines of "General drive" (I forget what it is called and will check later when I have it with me). When I click on this it comes up with an error message saying "J: Drive refers to a location that is unavailable.."

I hope this can get fixed eventually,
thanks in advance.

I recently posted here about a USB problem. The thread is located here: Unkown Device - Usb - Tech Support Forum

Please read my initial post and the responses before you post to this thread.

The solution in that thread worked for a few days until the problem was back all of a sudden. So i uninstalled all USB devices and re installed all under the n7110 drivers in the chipset section. This again worked for a few days until the problem returned. But now, the problem seems to be there no matter what even if I do an entire reinstall of my drivers. Any help?

I am trying my darndest to set up a home network. I finally got done with the main computer last night, and it's working fine with the wireless router - Linksys G Speedbooster, after spending hours on the phone with Link tech support and then the DSL company to get them to see each other.

The problem is now I can't get the older computer to "recognize" the USB wireless adapter I'm plugging in. The computer is an older model HP Brio running XP Pro, and the tech guy from Linksys is telling me that the USB port (there's only 2 on the back of this machine) is too old/slow, and that's why I'm getting the error message in the title of this thread. He said I should contact HP to "update the USB drivers." Is that even possible? Based on what I'm reading, it sounds like I need either a wireless adapter "card" as opposed to the USB type (to avoid the whole USB issue?), or get a new card for the USB to get it to work faster and see the newer stuff I'm plugging in there.

Your thoughts are much appreciated...this is exhausting!

For a little while now I have been getting error msgs popping up on my desktop that say "USB Device not Recognized, one of the USB devices connected to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it, replace the device."
There is nothing connected to my computer, and this error msg comes up ever 10 sec or so.
When I click on it, it shows 6 usb ports, all used except one that is in bold and says "Unknown USB Device" When I click on it nothing comes up.
Now my USBs are not working correctly, since it will pick up a memory stick that I plug in but will not pick up the wireless mouse that I connect.

This problem started last night when I had my printer cord (via an extension cable) USB, and the wireless mouse connected (plus a DVD in my computer). Everything that was plugged has been connceted before and working.
My system is a Vista-64 bit (faily new)

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be great.

Hmmmmm... Sounds like a call to Dell might be the answer to this one. Un less you have had other things in the past pluged into any of the USB ports then that is the only thing I can think of that would cause that problem or it could be that the computer was part of a net work and reading it from there but that Idea is very far fetched. I would call dell or look on ther site in the FAQ section and see if anyone else has had the same problem. This sounds like a dell thing to me. I could be wrong though Its a thought

If I disable "USB2 Enchanced Controller" (USB 2.0) in device manager, all my usb devices magically begin to work and install, but only at USB 1.1 Speed. This is a big setback for me. The strange thing is though, that my keyboard and mouse work regardless. Only things such as my webcam and external hd are "not recognized" or "malfunctioned". I've even tried Vista x64 and Windows 7 x32.

Does anyone have any ideas???

"USB Device not recognized: One of the devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."

This happens when I try to connect either of my smartphones (iPhone 4s, Galaxy s3) to my computer. The computer pretends like it's noticed that there's something there, then either chooses to ignore it or informs me that it doesn't recognize it. The phones think they're connected then disconnected then reconnected, ad infinitum. It's not the phones, I can connect them to a different computer with no problems. I can also connect and use a printer with my USB ports, so I don't think it's the ports either. Thus, some computer issue which I am too nooby to fix myself.

I've tried absolutely everything the Internet has to offer with this problem (uninstall USB driver and restart computer with device still attached, for example) but the problem stubbornly persists. Any further ideas about what to do would be fantastic. Thanks

You are correct - Windows Defender is not "Disabled", that message is a bug in the TSG SysInfo utility, which will be fixed sometime....

As for your USB issue.... have these devices worked previously with this computer using these USB Ports..? Or is this the first time that you are attempting to connect these devices to these Ports..?

HI, I have a ThinkCentre A51 (8122). I just noticed that the USB ports are not working properly.  The mouse/keyboard/printer work correctly but when I plug a camera or memory stick I get a USB device not recognized error.  If I plug my mouse into one of those other USB ports it works correctly.  My guess is that somehow all the USB ports have reverted back to USB 1.1 configuration.  I don't know when the problem occurred,  but I recently installed the latest MSOFT security updates, etc..,  a new version of Norton Internet Security.  When I check BIOS for USB, there is no setting to 'enable hi-speed USB'  that Intel website suggests for chipset 915G.  Any thoughts on how to recover/enable USB 2.0?  Thanks for any suggestions!

A:USB Device Not Recognized

Hi jmg290, just a small hint, maybe won't help but still...I faced exactly the same problem on another system - first my camera was not recognized, few months later I had problems with USB mouse - intermittent problems..Finally I found a capacitor on the motherboard which was almost "blown up". After replacing it, mouse and other USB devices started functioning properly I think it is worth to have a look... Good luck ! Tomi

im having troubles with usb devices on an xp computer,
computer is virus free,
when i would plug in a usb device it would come up with the messege "usb device not recognized"
this would happen with usb storage devices, a printer, and a wireless adapter, occassionally they would work but most of the time not,
the computer also has a usb mouse but strangely that always works,
i used usbdeview and removed everything in the list except the mouse, i have also gone to device manager and removed all hidden devices from the system,
after doing those things it got a little bit better, but now its starting to give the error again as often as before,
i removed the printer from the system and re-installed it and it worked, now after only one day the printer would not work and its not even listed in the system, i tried unplugging it from the system and plugging it back in, and it comes up with the same error
i dont know what to do next?

This is getting irritating enough I am tempted to go back to XP. Every time I plug in a USB device to charge it, for example my GoPro helmet cam, or just have an empty USB cable plugged in to one of the PC's ports and leave it on my desk so its ready to
plug something else  - I get that P.I.T.A. message popping up every couple of seconds. It won't go away either, it just keeps popping up again and again.
I have the all the latest updates, including the latest service pack. I powered off the CPU by unplugging it for 5 minutes and it still pops up whenever I plug in a cable or a device like one of my pocket video cams just to charge it.
Is there a fix for this or not?

I really understand how frustrating this is for you.  I would like to assist you to solve this problem.

According the issue, I suggest that you may try to upgrade your BIOS and reinstall the USB controller driver.

Download the driver from the manufacture’s website.

Go to control panel>administrative tools>computer management>device manager.

In device manager, expand the "universal serial bus controllers" tree, and delete things from the bottom first, one by one, going upwards. Root hubs
and then host controllers. Reboot.

Install the driver you download manually.

If the issue persists, please copy usbstor.inf and usbstor.pnf (c:\windows\inf) from another known Windows 7 computer to problem computer.

Also I want to know some information about the power supply of your machine, for example the voltage your power-supply device, the quantity of your disk and CD-ROM.
If you use several HDDs or CD-ROMs, I suggest that you may try to uninstall some device and try again. Since I suspect this problem is caused by power supply.

In addition, please collect the hardware installation log file in the path of %WINDIR%\... Read more

Every time I plug in any USB device into my Acer Aspire 5100 laptop, I get the dreaded USB device not recognized pop up message. I have been trying for months to fix this, but cannot find any solution.

some info:
Vista home edition 32bit
AMD Turion 64 x2 mobile TL-52
Acer Navarro MOBO, ATI Xpress 200 chipset

I have tried unplugging the computer and letting the battery drain, updating drivers, system restore... nothing helps.

the problem started about a week after I reinstalled windows on my machine after a power outage caused my computer to cease booting at all. I plugged in my new ipod nano, and updated it one time, and then my USB ports never worked again after that first time plugging in my nano. No devices work, no mouses, no printers, no flash drives.

please help! Thank you!

I use an external hard drive to back up my computer. I plug it in and it takes about 30 minutes. Today I plugged it in and immediately got the message "USB Device Not Recognized." I disconnected and reconnected with the same result. I updated the driver in device manager but was told I had the most recent update. I've tried everything I can think of and my PC still will not recognize the external hard drive. What could be wrong?

I tried looking up what could cause this, but too many results and nothing percise.

I have an custom made computer with an intel motherboard (an old D850GB) all was well and then I reinstalled windows p. I used to have USB when I first installed it, but I think I wound up getting a bunch of windows updates all at once, and then the next thing I know when I tried to access something with USB, NOTHING happened.

I have a PCI USB 2 card that doesn't work and neither do the two slots on the motherboard. I have NO Idea what could have gone wrong. Any pointers would be nice.

The motherboard comes with a cd, and I tried to install the software that came with it but it fails every time.

I'm totally stumped.
