External HDD locked by Bitlocker without my permission

Q: External HDD locked by Bitlocker without my permission

I was using my work laptop at work and connected my personal USB external drive to the laptop. No problem. I used the external drive to show colleagues some pictures of my new house renovation and then disconnected the drive.
However, when I reconnected the drive to my own personal laptop at home, it informed me that it was locked by bitlocker and needed a recovery to unlock it!
At no time was I requested to bitlocker it or indeed informed that bitlocker was locking the drive. This totally sucks as I have precious family photos on the drive and now cannot access them!!
Can anyone help?

Preferred Solution: External HDD locked by Bitlocker without my permission

I recommend downloading and trying SP Photo Recovery. It will help find and retrieve your lost files.

I've used it in the past to recover photos, music, videos, and other multimedia files, regardless if the file has been deleted, lost, damaged or corrupted.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/UDbKNE. (This link will open the download page so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello,

I use Windows 8 on my laptop, and my external HDD got encrypted with BitLocker out of the blue.

I have never used BitLocker, I do not even have it on my laptop (Control Panel does not show any icon for BitLocker & forums say it is only available with Windows 8 Pro).

Therefore, I have no idea why Windows has locked my HDD, and I have no means of recovering this as I do not have any recovery key or password (since I have never used BitLocker in the
first place).

Please help.

Thanks,
Jignasha

A:External HDD automatically locked by BitLocker

Manage-bde

This tool can be used to turn on or turn off BitLocker, specify unlock mechanisms, update recovery methods, and unlock BitLocker-protected data drives. This tool can be used in place of the
BitLocker Drive Encryption Control Panel item. For more information, see Manage-bde.exe Parameter Reference. at www.TechNet(dot)Microsoft(dot)com/en-us/library/dd875513(v=ws.10).aspx

Try This:
manage-bde -status (Drive Letter):
Example: manage-bde -status C:
to check if Bitlocker lock your drive.
and
manage-bde -off (Drive Letter): example:
manage-bde -off C:
It none of its works, that means your HDD is blocked by another program, give us prompt massage or screen-shot, for further help.

i have an external HDD that is locked by bitlocker and won`t open
i didn`t lock it i just went on section that asks for password and cancel the process and my HDD worked just fine but after i disconnected it and connect again it has been locked and when i try to open it says :

Bitlocker (D:)
the bitlocker encryption in this drive isn`t compatible with your version of windows. try opening the drive using a newer version of vindows.

i`m pretty sure it didn`t encrypt my drive cuz encryptions take time and my drive is 1 TB
i`m using windows 8.1 and tried 8 & 7 ...even XP :(
i have really important stuff in it
plz tell me what to do :'(

A:Unable to open external HDD that is locked by bitlocker

Farid Rahimi,
If you haven?t already, remove the drive from whatever port you have it plugged into and try another port.
Another thing you can check is to see if there are any new updates available for your BIOS.
Take a look at any changes that it might list and if there have been any changes to the TPM, go ahead and run that update.
You?ll also want to make sure that your system settings are all correct for the port you?re using.
Hope this helps!

Hi I am using a Window Surface and I just got my external drive locked by Bitlocker WITHOUT having enabled it. I need to access crucial data, how can I unlock it? If I double-click on

Hi, Ive pretty much lost my key and recovery key for my bitlocker encrypted win7 partition. Im thinking of going into my winxp partition, doing a quick format on the encrypted partition which im locked out of, then using some sort of data recovery software to get the files on the encrypted partition back, will this work? or will the files I try to recover still be encrypted? also, if that would work could someone recommend some good hard drive recovery software, I dont mind if its not free.

Hello all, first post here as I've spent months researching this in my spare time and have exhausted my patience on trying to figure this out on my own, so I very much appreciate any assistance I can get!

So as to not try and write a novel here I'm going to give as brief of a description as I can while still giving enough info.

Situation:

I have a desktop with the C: drive being most of my day to day items, and the E: drive being a TB drive that stores my music, movies, pictures, etc. A few years ago when I first started dating my now wife, I had decided since she would use this computer from time to time it would be smart of me to lock one of the folders with pictures of ex's (the kind that would get me into trouble with a new g/f if you catch my drift) and basically forgot about it. Fast forward to today, and we are happily married, and as I was going through that TB drive I came across the folder. I decided I wanted to delete it, as well as take one last look just in case there was anything else in there I might still want to keep. That's when I came across the issue of not having the privileges to open/close/copy/delete this folder.

I am the administrator on the computer, I've tried taking ownership of the folder using a variety of techniques including going to command prompt and using: takeown/F E:\media\specials\Misc. << the root of the folder in question, all to no avail. When I tried the takeown command I get "Error: the system cannot find the file ... Read more

Hello Everyone,

I have an issue that started with a rush to encrypt my Windows 7 - HP Pavilion g6 Notebook with Bitlocker.

I started and completed the encryption process on my C drive.

Upon re-starting my computer, I was taken to the HP Recovery Manager page and unable to access my desktop. At
this point, I'm unable to access any of my files and I don't know how to process or fix this.

Things I've done to try to fix:

-After research, I've successfully unlocked and disabled Bitlocker with my recovery key and password through the
manage-bde commands.
-I've done a system checkup, and it appears there's an issue with the Hard Disk Short DST - failure.
-I've run a CHKDSK scan, and there are alot of files corrupt, but I have no details on what's wrong.

I suspect that by encrypting my drive, I also encrypted the operating system.

Can anyone give me advice on what I should do next to try and get my computer working back to normal? .

Thanks!!

Ok quick story the previous win xp computer I owned received a nasty virus as it took over my whole computer. Before it completely went to I was able to back up some folders and files. Everything could transfer over to my new win7 with no virus detection except for two folders. Both folders were scanned and no virus was detected, yet it keeps telling me when I try to move them that I don't have permission to. So I reset the permissions to admin and still said I couldn't move the files. Another thing when I take out the drive and put it back in, the permissions go back to normal S-1-5-21-700210099-1368088401-3141378099-1000. HELP!!!!

What is the exact files you are trying to move? If the file in the quote is what you are trying to move, it is a Windows Update file and cannot be moved and would be useless on Windows 7. If this is not a system file, then copy the files to a USB Flash drive and scan the drive before saving them to Windows 7.

My X1 died on me and, according to the sheet of paper that came back from the repair center, had its system board replaced. Unfortunately, when booting, I get a prompt for a bitlocker recovery key - and the key I have (confirmed with Microsoft) is not working. The key id shown on the recovery screen is also different. I've spent about 40 minutes on the phone now with Lenovo support, and haven't gotten anywhere - how can I get back into my machine? It would appear that, since the hard drive was not replaced, I should still be able to get in with my existing key, or am I missing something there?

I had a gateway computer I bought in dec 2002. Anyway in Jan I bought vista ultimate and it ran fine until for some reason it decided to not start up.. no power to anything. the computer went to "sleep" one night and wouldn't start up.

That's not why I'm here though. I had 5+ years of files, pictures, and family videos on the 2 hard drives which I think are now locked with bitlocker. I tried installing them as secondary hard drives in the new computer, and the computer thinks they are blank and wants to format them. Am I correct in thinking they are locked? If they are, is there any way to get my files back?

Hey All,

Recently my company provided me with a Windows 10 SOE image as part of a UAT. The image includes Symantec Endpoint Encryption which utilizes Bitlocker for encryption.

I went through all of the motions with the C:\ drive to be encrypted and even printed the recovery key. Well, at some point I plugged in a few My Passport USB drives and they became locked by Bitlocker To Go. Everytime I try to unlock or click on these drives it asks for the 48-bit key which I don't have because I never was prompted to encrypt/lock these drives.

IT says that there are no keys stored on the servers for these USB drives and suggested that this would be a "local" encryption. However, they also stated that they wouldn't be encrypted unless I was prompted about it. So, there's this mystery about how these USB drives came to be locked.
I've been doing some research and the closest I've come is getting some output about the protectors:

Hello everyone.

Not to long ago, I removed the HD from my laptop and slipped into an enclosure so that I could access information I had saved. When I initially did it all, I thought it was just a matter of connecting the enclosure to my tower and having it pop up like it would on a USB. Little did I know I needed to obtain permission and take ownership.

After reading and searching for some time, I came across the below link, and followed the direction: You don't currently have permission to access this fold

When I click on the folder and then properties, everything as it should be. I even followed the exact same steps provided in the below links as well, but to no avail:

I don't know, and am at a lost right now. For example, when I click on a photo from my laptop HD, it states "Windows photo viewer can't open this picture because you don't have the correct permissions to access the file location."

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One thing very strange is all the setup of firefox e.g. proxy, addons, and the open tab history are gone after I unplug it from the library computer.

Looks like it has to do with the permission setting on the external hard disk.

Can you tell me how to change the permission on my external hard disk?

In addition, say if I want to use my external hard disk as the portable computer that I have all the application installed and ready for use on any third computer. Is there any application/platform can help me to achieve that?

Hello, I converted my old desktop hard drive into an external hard drive for my laptop. The old desktop ran on XP (if that matters).

My new laptop is Windows 7.

When I plugged in the external hard drive, I tried to access the folders and got "permission denied". After looking online I found out that I need to become the owner of the new files/folders in order to set permissions.

I went into Start > Computer > right click on E: drive (E: is the name of the external HD)

Clicked on Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner tab. Now I initially selected "my computer"\Administrators as the owner. Checked "Replace owner on subcontainer and objects"

I then tried to access the folder and was denied. So I repeated the steps and made my username as the owner.

I also went in and gave myself full access to the folders.

Now it is hit or miss. Some folders are OK to go into, some still require me to become owner.

I cannot access any of my files, unless I go in one by one and give myself "full permission".

I have thousands of files on my hard drive, and I really don't want to go in one by one to set my permissions.

Am I missing anything? Is there any ownership or permissions that I can set at the top level and have it go all the way to the files?

Thanks in advance (I hope I gave enough information, but if not, please ask.)

There is no backdoor in Bitlocker....unless you can remember the password, your data is irretrievably lost. End of story, no if's or but's.

Hi experts
My external USB disk was encrypted by bitlocker. It worked well until today. Now every time I try to decrypt the disk with no matter the password or key file, the USB disk lost connection.
My local IT said the it can be due to that some track of the disk is broken.
So in the case, is there any way I can get my data back.
Thanks very much. It is urgent. I am looking forward for your reply.

Hello,

We would like to use Bitlocker to encrypt external devices. However, we do already have some external hard disks with built-in encryption. Is it possible to detect this, and not to re-encrypt those disks with Bitlocker ?

Thanks,

Soitjes.

Dear Friends,
I have a Toshiba external hard drive. When I viewed the photos on it accidentally my friend locked with bitlocker in my absence. He has no idea about the recovery key and password. He has given some hints for the password. But all failed. Can anyone help me out of this issue.

A:External hard drive has to be opened from bitlocker

Hello Jenieragav, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm afraid that if you have do not have the password or recovery key, then about the only option is to format the drive to be able to use it again. That's what BitLocker is designed for. No access with password or key.

Hello all,

I didn't use my external hard drive for over a month, and today I decided that i wanted a back-up of some of the stuff on my laptop. I plugged it in and immediately a message popped up, saying that this drive was protected by something called BitLocker. It required me to enter a 48 digit recovery key. I had NEVER heard of BitLocker up until that point. I didn't know anything about a recovery key, and why didn't it ask for a regular password first, before asking for a recovery key? I didn't have a clue. I still don't have a clue. I searched my computer for BitLocker using the regular 8.1 system search. No results. I searched in PC Info. There is something about encryption there. That was, and is turned off. Not a mention of BitLocker anywhere. When i looked it up it said it comes with Windows 8.1 Pro or Enterprise edition. I am fairly certain I have regular 8.1. How in the name of all that is holy did I get saddled with this piece of shit encryption that locks me from my files, while I don't even want it? When I plugged it into my fathers laptop, also running 8.1 it gave the same message. When i plugged it into my brothers Asus tablet with keyboard combo, also running 8.1, it didn't give any problems. Does anyone here have any clue what is going on? Would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Thank you

A:BitLocker and External Hard Drive(WD My passport 2TB)

I'm having the exact same problem. I've been dealing with it for months. Both of my external hard drives had this happen to them at roughly the same time, and I have no idea how. I too had never heard of Bitlocker before this happened. I tried calling WD and they told me to call Microsoft as Bitlocker is owned by Microsoft. I called Microsoft and they told me to talk to WD. I've been led in circles for months and still cannot access my hard drives and the files on them. I do not have the recovery keys and do not know how to get them. I have been searching for answers throughout the internet without any results. I was told that I could reformat them, and that might work, but then I would lose all of my files. I don't have a backup for them because my hard drives were the backups (that's why I had two!). If you have been able to fix this problem, or have any sort of solutions or options, please, please help me out.

We've had a few HP 1020 and 1040 models in recently and all have the same issue. When the laptop is docked, the external keyboard does not work in the Bitlocker screen. It works in BIOS and in Windows itself, but not in Bitlocker. This means we have to open the laptop screen to input the Bitlocker PIN, then leave it open and GPO dictates that the machine hibernates when the lid is closed. We have tweaked the GPO, but to no avail. ANyone else seen this or have a solution?

A:External keyboard not working in Bitlocker screen

if the bios is up to date, i would look at BIOS settings. I believe Fast Boot setting is Enabled in your case, which might cause usb devices not to be seen at the stage Bitlocker requires

Hey guys,

So I was trying to decrypt a Bitlocker-protected portable drive overnight and it seems to be stuck at 0.4% decryption completed (some other drives were encrypted around the same time but I don't think that should affect it much, right?) I guess either my USB 3.0 hub momentarily failed or my computer went to sleep during the process?
Anyway, I then paused decryption and opened up the error checking tool but it didn't complete (I don't think it even opened) but in the process, I agreed to turn off access to the drive during the "error check" that doesn't seem to have happened.

So recap: Not only can I not see the files on the drive, Windows can't even access the drive?

Btw, there's over 2TB worth of some pretty important data on this drive so can someone please help? I'd be willing to pay a reasonable amount for a software solution.

A:Bitlocker external drive seems to have stuck decrypting

Update: the drive seems to work after plugging it into my laptop's built-in USB port. It shows the decrypting screen and everything and after copying all the contents to a larger 4TB drive, they seem to be intact as far as I can tell.

Hi
I was wondering if you can secure a wireless external disk drive (like the seagate wireless plus) with Bitlocker. When using Bitlocker the PC cannot access the drive in wireless mode (only when connected via USB). Any ideas?
Thanks.
