search bar/cortana not working

Q: search bar/cortana not working

my searchbar/cortana has suddenly stopped working, when I click I get a message telling me there is a problem, please sign out.
so I googled the problem
I ran the systen file checker which reported a problem and said it was fixed, problem still there
I reinstalled all windows 10 app, problem still there

so I created a new user account, this fixed the problem for that account
so I tried to sign in to the newly added local account with my Microsoft account and entered my username and password
I then got a screen asking for my old password (I assume its the microsoft password)
I got a message telling me its not correct for this device (I only have one password)
So I left it blank (as per the on screen instructions)
The I got an error sccren
'oops something went wrong, its probably our fault'
and thats it, cant get any further.

So I thought Id transfer all the files and settings from my old account to the new account, and Ive hit a brick wall, how can I do this ? the new account has no knowledge og my applications, documents, pictures, etc. I just cant install everything.

Is it possible to just copy everything from one account to another ?

Im left with an unusable computer if I stick with my old account
can anyone help me ?

Preferred Solution: search bar/cortana not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: search bar/cortana not working

Hello, never had to do that, but this may help (from a quick search).
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/transf...ile-in-windows

Note: if you use disk imaging regularly (e.g. Macrium Reflect free) you can always restore your PC to a previously working state- when you created the image.

It's also a full backup.

Presumably you don't have any helpful restore points.
Also recommend you turn on System restore, and set up a daily scheduled task to automatically create a restore point to help recover from such issues.

You will find some results by searching on that 'Oops' message. Not one I've had to deal with, sorry.

Spent all day with new laptop getting it setup. Apart from some hiccups all gone well but one glitch. Cortana works pretty much fine but the search facility isn't working properly. Say I want to 'create a restore point'. I'll type 'res' and it gets found by Cortana as per the first screenshot. But when I click the best match 'Create a restore point' I get the second screen. So it never finds it and opens it. Been like it all day even after allowing the laptop plenty of idle time. Funny thing is it's only doing it for the new settings GUI functions, you know those that have the cog wheel icon next to them. Everything else that is found can be opened, ie. word, old style control panel, files etc etc. Any ideas?

Cheers,
Wayne

A:cortana / search not working properly

Hello Wayne,

The thing that is odd is that the Create a Restore point should not be associated with the new Settings GUI but is actually a control panel function. Here is what I see on mine:
It looks like your search has made a wrong association and maybe you need to reset the search index. To do this type index in the search box and you should be able to open the control panel index options.

Then click on advanced and this will allow you to rebuild the index.

Cheers,
Phil

Yesterday I had my Tablet PC (Windows 8.1) returned after the upgrade by a technician. I have encountered some issues, some fairly minor, others more significant ---- especially Cortana and Search not working:

1. Cortana does not work. She is said to be unavailable because of the language and region that has been selected. The language is English USA (needed for the keyboard) and the region is UK / GB, surely neither of which should be causing any problems?

2. Search does not work. It generates the error 'class not registered'. I have encountered this error before, so from searching in the past I have seen that this can be caused by a number of different factors, hence it is hard to identify what to do.

I will work on the other issues after these two have been resolved.

I have visited the How To site and found that my situation is commonplace, complicated and worldwide. There are many in a similar situation in the UK. On the one hand it is comforting to know that I am not alone and others have resolved the problems --- eventually. However, on the other hand I note that many of the postings date from July, and feel it should not still be continuing to happen now.

If I have understood it, the problems revolve around getting the settings for region / display language / speech language configured in a mutually compatible way.

Help would be appreciated!

Hi All,
I've got a system here which is acting up and I'm looking for ideas of how to resolve. Specs are:

Windows 10 Home (upgraded from W8.1)
i7-3632 8GB RAM 64bit
Inspiron 17R5720 laptop

Here's the problem: Everything works fine upon boot, but then, something happens over time, and things stop working.

Start left-click not working/Start right-click works
Notification left-click not working/Notification right-click menu shows, but open action center doesn't work
Quick Launch opens and works
All icons pinned to the taskbar work including File Explorer
Cortana and search not working - can't type in box
Speaker icon left-click does not work, right-click does

This is all intermittent, and resolved with a reboot.

Something sets it off to stop working - perhaps the screensaver/lockscreen?

Fast Startup is off, hybernate off as well.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated. TIA.

A:Start/Notification/Cortana/Search Stop Working

Hi, I'll assume all is sound e.g. chkdsk, SFC show no problems.

Have you tried a clean boot to see if the symptoms recur?
And if so, Safe Mode?

I.e. start to identify potential conflicts.

Hi guys. I did a fresh reinstall of Windows 10. Worked flawlessly, even the activation (pretty proud of myself lol) but bit of a weird bug happens sometimes. If I left click on Search next to start bar, it will light up but not open. It will on the second click but just a bit of an annoyance. Somethinf similar happened with Store where it flashed them closed. I clicked it again and its been working fine since and it also happened once on Windows Update. Not major issues I know but I'd love to know what it is. Thanks

Edit: I have done a SFC check and its come back with no errors. It did happen prior to the clean reinstall and I did the powershell command but it made all the apps go funny with a @ at the beginning of them.

Is this Windows 10 original version or version 10586? The new Windows version has a lot of bugs and I do believe that was one of them. I reverted back to the original version of Windows 10. If you choose to stay with 10586, you may to wait till Microsoft releases a patch. Although not everyone has experienced this issue.

Ever since Build 14385 and now in 14388, Cortana has been using and opening IE as the browser for showing search web results instead of Edge. Edge is set as the default browser and has been for a long time. Have checked all the settings in both Edge and IE, as well as in Cortana, can find nothing that would or should cause this.

Any ideas?

Hi all,

So basically, my search is just acting really wonky on Windows 10. If I search for an app or desktop program, it shows up and I press enter or click it, and it opens just fine. But, if I search for a setting, say "Windows Update" or "Bluetooth", etc. (basically anything in the new "settings" metro app), the result appears, but I can't actually open it from the search window, clicking or pressing enter does nothing.

See sreenshots:

Note that I can still access the "Settings" app itself just fine, but when I search for an individual setting with Cortana, it shows up in results, but I can't open it.

EDIT: I thought it would be a good idea to add, I have 2 other computers also using Windows 10, and they can open search results completely fine... it only happens on this one computer.
If you need system specs I can provide.

Thanks

I have been on contact support 3 times. they couldnt fix it and they are unable to escalate it to tier 2 because i would have to pay or because i am on an insider build. Things I have tried:

1. A really long powershell command that i dont remember the exact one
2. Restart
3. Rolling back
4. Making a new user
5. Using commands through command prompt
6. a clean upgrade
7. Disable and uninstall anti virus

Hi All,
Been pulling my hair out for months working with this OS and MDT. I'm creating a master image (Golden) on a virtual machine and when the software for our organization is installed, and a test user logs into the Virtual machine for the first time, Cortana and search are disabled. Logs also show errors with initializing "Search". Here are my image build steps:
-Install OS, log into machine with default Administrator account
-Create a local administrator account. Log off of "built-In" admin account.
-Log in with "new" local administrator account.
-Install updates. Rename and join computer to domain
-Log into VM with a default domain account (Used to customize apps for domain users). Install and configure apps.
-Log off domain account. Log in with "new" local admin account
-Copy domain user account profile to the "Default" profile. Use regedit to load "Default" hive. Remove references of domain account"
-Remove domain account SID and user folder.
-Remove VM from domain
-Sysprep, and Shutdown.
When I use a domain joined account to log into the VM, Cortana and Search is disabled. When I log into the machine as the newly created "Admin" account. Search and Cortana work as expected. For some reason it seems to be permissions related to the "Apps" folder, but Im not sure. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is there a way to stop the middle mouse button (i.e. click of the scroll wheel) from opening Cortana/search?

Things I've tried:

1. Searched Google. No useful results. The closest I found was that Windows 10 may be confusing the click of the middle mouse button as the 3-finger tap on the touchpad - which opens Cortana/search by the default. But I don't have a touch pad. I have the Toshiba PX30T (Toshiba Qosmio PX30t 23 inch Touchscreen All-in-One PC - Black/Silver (Intel Core i3 3120M 2.5GHz Processor, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, DVDSM DL, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Integrated Graphics, Windows 8 64-Bit): Amazon.co.uk: Computers Accessories).

2. Tried re-configuring the middle mouse button in (a) Windows 10 Settings > Devices > Mouse & touchpad, (b) Control Panel > Mouse, and (c) my desktop's manufacturer's System Settings utility application (upgraded just now from their website). Interestingly, none of those three configuration tools had any control setting for the middle mouse button.

It is obvious that Windows 10 doesn't "fully" support the wireless mouse that comes with my PC.

My question then is...

Is there a way to "unbind" the middle mouse button from opening Cortana/search? For example, via the Registry Editor - maybe?

Thanks for any replies!

@Shamika83 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! What happened when you "called Microsoft"?  Did they remote into your PC and make some changes? IF so, we are unable to help you as we have no way of knowing what they did, or what they "broke". Sorry, but this is a Windows OS issue, and you will need to get back in touch with Microsoft to have them correct the damage they caused. If you don't want to do that, an alternative is to do a factory reset of your PC to its original state -- but that will remove everything currently on the drive. And for that, we need to know if your PC came preinstalled with Win10, or if you did the Win10 Upgrade from a prior OS.Good Luck

Over the last couple of days I have found Cortana's 'Ask Me Anything' search box will not work. I can type nothing in. From inspection of other people's problems with Cortana it seems the trouble is often associated with Start Menu malfunction. In my case however I have no problem with the start menu.
Can anyone advise me how to overcome this annoying problem?
PS The Windows 10 updates are all installed.

A:Cortana not working.

Suggestions only :

1. You said " Over the last couple of days ". If that is the fact, do a system restore. Pick a date when Cortana was working , or at least a week ago as your restore point.

2. If that does not help. Try this troubleshooting method..............
Run a system file check to look for corrupt files. It will try to do repair if any found.
Right click at Start button > click Command Prompt (Admin) > at the flashing prompt, copy/paste this.......
sfc /scannow

> press Enter.
It will take quite sometime.
When finished, it will give you one of the 3 reports...............(paraphrasing)
1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupt files and repair successful.
3. Found corrupt files but unable to repair.

If the report is #1, your solution lies elsewhere.
If the report is #2, check if your problems have been resolved.
If the report is #3, use this method................
In the same Command Prompt (Admin) windows, copy and paste this command...........

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

> press Enter.
Again it will take some time.
When finished, it will give you a report.

3. Create another user account with exactly the same privileges > log on to it and see if Cortana will work.

It makes a faint attempt to listen to me, by asking me what I am looking for and not responding. I enter type in the search box, and nothing appears. To find some of the usual sites, I have to enter Win key + a letter.. I did go into settings and turned most, if not all buttons to "ON''. BTW, pretty new to Win 10, but could someone tell me how I can change color of the dark blue fonts that usually appear as high links. With the black background , I have to swipe the mouse across it and it shows up nicely with a light blue background...but its a pain that in order for me to read some of the stuff, I have to swipe over it and change the background light blue which it does automatically.

Hello. I have a toshiba laptop upgraded to windows 10. About a week ago my start menu, Cortana, & several other windows apps (calculator, etc) stopped opening at all. I did a system restore to about a week before. System restore took an unusually extremely long time but seemed to work.

NOW Cortana responds to Hey Cortana, but then the little corner cortana box just sits there, & cortana never speaks, nor searches, nor acts like it hears me.

My start menu opens normal but my xbox app (which i use quite a lot) acts like its going to open, but before I see anything other than the green background it closes (no notification or anything). It does the same thing if i click one of my notifications in the menu that comes from the icon on my taskbar.

Same happens with Edge (from any place including: startmenu, desktop, & taskbar).

Calculator, Word, etc all seem to work fine.

I thought I'd try restoring to previous time again however though i had 3 different restore point options when i restored the 1st time (&i had chosen the most recent), it shows no previous restore points & shows no space being used for restore storage!

Ive found some similar problems when i tried searching for solutions, however they all had AVAST installed, which i do not.

Could anybody help me with a good solution? Thank you very much for your time & assistance.

Is there a way to completely remove Cortana? I disabled it, but it keeps running in the background.
I did find some suggestions to remove it, but it also removes the search and causes problems to other stuff.
So is there a working way by now to do that?

Thanks!

Hello mibaup,

This will only disable Cortana the personal assistant, and not the Cortana process used by Search (SearchUI.exe). These are two separate items. You don't want to disable search.

Acer AX1470 desk unit. Have rebuilt HHD about 4 times now but same issue. Cortana works fine when I start Windows 10. After an hour or 2 nothing happens when I click on it in the task bar. I then go to the Task Manager and end the Cortana process. Cortana then works properly for another hour or 2 before it fails to respond again. I kill the process and continue to repeat the process.

When I start using Cortana it will not connect to the Internet. I say, for example, "Hey Cortana" then I say "Facebook Log in" it copies what I say but then comes back with, "The Internet and I are not talking right now." or "I can't connect right now, try again in a little bit." I thought it was a problem with my default browser, Google Chrome, but it works fine. How can I run a diagnostic or debug Cortana? It won't even set up my appointments anymore on Calendar and it's on the hard drive. Can anyone help me with this problem?

Thank You in Advance,

Jay

Hello, Cortana no longer works for me. It was fine earlier. Updates current, microphone works per sound meter (on speaker icon>recording devices) also working per device mgr. Downloaded MS troubleshooter that said "Microsoft Experiences Host" and Microsoft Windows Cortana" need to be installed correctly' What's that supposed to mean? Ran admin. sfc/scannow no problems there. She won't respond to voice commands, also the search box is there but can't type in it. The 'Cortana' button at start menu isn't functional. Can't even find on/off button for Cortana in settings. Only other option maybe go to restore point. Really at a loss. Any ideas anyone? Thanks and please respond soon. Steve ..........

Hi, create a new user for test purposes. Does Cortana work in that?

If so, then see
Apps - Reinstall and Re-register in Windows 8 and 10 - Windows 10 Forums
Section 2
CTRL F and search for Cortana, and use that Power Shell command, noting the instructions at the start of section 2 as to how to do it.

Now sthg must have caused this- have you changed any policy settings, any Settings, changed language..

Another approach would be to use a restore point. Do you have System restore enabled? Do you have any useful restore points?

First, I'd like to point out that I found and read this thread that, in the last post, tells me how to disable Cortana. https://techguy.org/1185771

But for me, that is not enough. I want her file gone completely. I opened the file location and moved Cortana's file onto my desktop. I've yet to delete it because I don't know what harm could or could not happen.

That being said, let me tell you about my laptop, in case that makes any difference.
My laptop is a SonicMaster by Asus, E403S Series (the biggest piece of sh*t that I will NEVER buy again. SO MANY PROBLEMS.)

If any more laptop info is needed, let me know. While I'm considered the tech guru of my house, all of this is way beyond my head.

Hi,

I recently bought a new laptop that came pre-installed with Windows 10 - everything is working fine apart from I can't do anything with Bing. Doing a search from Edge or Cortana just brings up the 'hmm can't access page' error. Trying to go to www.bing.com from Edge or IE just brings an an empty screen with a search box that doesn't do anything. Every other website I go to works fine. I installed the Anniversary update yesterday but that hasn't made any difference.

I am currently using IE with Google search and that works great - but I would like to get Bing working so that I can use Edge and Cortana.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire Nitro with an Intel I7 core 6th generation.

Thanks in advance

Sounds an odd problem. Sometimes one off site access issues can be down to DNS and router issues. Might be worth rebooting your router and flushing the DNS cache on your PC.

Hi all. Just a small annoyance really. The Cortana live tile is not working all the time for me. When I open Cortana I can see my specified news cards etc however it won't live update new news etc on the live tile.

Sometimes I will see for instance "BBC -5 minutes ago" on the tile but it won't show the headline just the Cortana circle icon.

Every other live tile seems to work ok.

Any tips please? Many thanks

I have upgraded to Windows 10 first my laptop and, more recently, my desktop. I use Reliability Monitor daily. Three days into Windows 10, Reliability Monitor on my desktop reported an application failure yesterday: "Cortana - stopped working". There are two further such reports today within a minute of one another. My laptop has not reported this event so far. Everything in Windows+S>Settings is set to off on both machines - I do not want Cortana. Settings>Privacy is set to much the same on both machines, except in Speech, inking and typing. I see that my desktop is set to "Get to know me" and my laptop is set to "Stop getting to know me". I wonder if any other users have advice to overcome my issue in this minefield of settings that Windows 10 offers.

Hello,

I am struggle a lot with Windows 10 honestly.
So all of a sudden, Cortana stopped functioning and start menu stopped working.
I have tried all steps and tweaks available out there to fix the issue beside changing the profile and backing up the entire user because I can't risk doing that and lose my files.
So I tried restarting which Microsoft recommended including their start menu fix which resulted in nothing.
Tried powershell command, no changes yet.
Tried doing updates... NADA
Tried creating a local administrator user and nothing yet.
So I'm hoping there is someone who had similar issue and hopefully got that fixed.
Please help me out from this mess.
I honestly appreciate you for you're kind effor.
Thanks
