My Windows install is too slow for no reason...

Q: My Windows install is too slow for no reason...

Hi,
I have XP Home install on my HDD as one of 3 partitons (XP Pro and Fedora 7 are the other two). My startup on ONLY XP Home is waayy too slow, and for no reason to boot! I have scanned the computer w/ Ad-Aware, SpyBot, and the ZoneAlarm Suite. I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary in my HJT log but I'm posting it up now too.

Preferred Solution: My Windows install is too slow for no reason...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello,

I freshly installed win 7 pro on my computer, running with a SSD for the system drive, and two other HDD for storage.
16gb of ram and an I7 4770K.

I installed all drivers required, the system was running smoothly for a few days, and suddenly started to boot slowly.

Before, the whole boot process took between 16 seconds to 20 seconds. Now, it takes 40 seconds to get to the windows logon screen ?!

My OS is still free of any third party software except one or two but, I installed them some days ago, and they did not trigger the slow boot process.

It appeared for no apparent reason...

I used "trace boot" to try to identify the issue, but I have no clue how to read it correctly. First, using xperfviewer, it seems that "autochk.exe" is hanging on boot, but using the windows kits analysing tool, it rather seem like "smss.exe" is the culprit. But I'm not really sure I'm reading it correctly.

Here is the .etl file : https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resi...int=file%2cetl

Overall, "Session init" phase takes almost 30 seconds !

Note : I checked all my drives for errors, no error. Windows says all my drives are "not dirty"

Events viewer says in the performance diagnostic tools :
Critical : Session manager initialization caused a slow down in the startup process
Name : SMSSInit
Total duration : 27109ms

-->This error doesn't show up every time in the event viewer, but the slow boot is still occuring...

The cpu sits at like 20% usage and the ram is usually at 60% used......

This also happen recently just out of the blue...I know its not my hardware (except possibly the hard drive) because my Ubuntu install runs smooth as possible so i don't know whats up....

I ran a scan with kesperskey pure 2.0 and Malware bytes and both turned up clean so i have no idea why its so slow..

Hello,

I'm back again with another problem I couldnt fix outright. It is a windows 7 machine, a HP Pavilion dv7. At one time, it was one of the fastest smoothest running new computers (not including personally built machines!) I had ever used. It ran perfectly fine, until one day where it just stopped working properly. Everything became slower than it should be- There is typing delay (sometimes), the volume ticker thing delays (sometimes), IE sometimes becomes unusable it's so slow, youtube videos stutter to the point of a slideshow (again sometimes), and things like word and CPU-z take abnormally long to open. The machine seems "preoccupied"

There are no viruses or malware, it is fully updated, ccleaner'ed, defragged, and overall checked over- no obvious problems. I ran P95 for like an hour to just test general stability and it ran fine in that. There are no apparant bad or too many programs running.

I'm at a loss with this problem- any advice? You guys have never failed me before!

Thanks,
Will

Good evening everyone,

My issue is with today's 'Patch Tuesday' Windows Updates.

[System: Win7 Home Premium SP1 x64]. Computer is a standalone, not on any network, and used only by me.

Description of problem:

There were something like 14 - 16 important updates in today's batch. Most of them did NOT install. (Please see attached screenshots showing this + my current WU settings, at the bottom of this post).
NO error codes are being displayed. WU just keeps saying it is downloading updates. The 'download progress' remains at "0%" the entire time, however.

Resolutions attempted thus far:

1. Ran CCleaner, then tried to update again. No success.
2. Restarted computer 3 times, then attempted to update, without success.
3. UNCHECKED all updates except for 3, and tried updating just those 3.
Problem remains.
4. On the 3rd attempt, after waiting 15 minutes, I cancelled the download/installation.
5. Ran scans with ESET Smart Security (v9), MBAM Premier, and SAS. No issues were found.

My question: Is there an explanation for, & a resolution to, this problem?

The only potential explanation I could think of is the Windows Update servers are too busy???
(Don't recall having encountered this type of problem before).

Thank you for your for time and any help!

Hi,
I have a laptop (I am using another laptop to enter the forum) that suddenly became very slow 2 days ago. Since then, it takes very long to log in or restart/shut off. Initially, I thought the problem was that many important windows updates (about 35 updates) were missing, and windows update said that it was NEVER updated! So, I installed all the updates, but still no improvement. I have also ran CCleaner, Diskeeper to defrag the disk (both in normal mode and also during start-up, to defrag the pagefile), and Malware Bytes (no important problems detected). The CPU usage does not exceed 7% and the memory usage does not exceed 35%. So, I have no idea what might be causing the problem. I also noticed that when I rebooted in safe mode with networking, the PC performance was much better (still it seems to be slow when trying to open Mozilla or Google Chrome).
Another thing is that, the day the PC became slow, Windows Media Player reported a problem when I tried to open some data (photos etc) and it did some updates/needed new settings etc (this may just be a result of the problem, I just report it).
Any suggestions? Thank you

Hey,

Starting about 12 hours ago I've been getting the pop-up message about Windows detecting slow performance, and asking to switch to a basic color scheme.

The difference in my case versus everything else I've been able to find about this problem, is that my computer actually is running extremely slow.

The problem started while I was browsing CNN's homepage last night...the mouse icon stared flickering, and any actions I took (clicking a link, etc) would be completed a minute or two later.

I built my computer about 2 years ago and have had no problems. Nothing has been recently updated or installed, nothing downloaded...I have no clue why this would start out of the blue, AND why it would affect the performance to the point where the only way I can use Windows is in Safe Mode...even switching to the basic color scheme doesn't provide smooth performance.

Specs:

Windows 7 Professional 32 bit
Pentium Dual-Core E5200 2.50 GHz
4.00 GB RAM (2.99 usable)
Gigabyte G31M-ES2L motherboard, using onboard graphics (don't use PC for gaming)
I'd appreciate any help that can be provided. Thanks in advance.

Note to mods: I posted this here because I found other threads in this forum about this warning message. If this belongs more in another forum, please move it. Thanks.

A:"Windows has detected performance is slow" - no known reason?

get a virus check done and then a malware scan done - both on full scan before you do anything further

you could also check task manager to see what if anything is taking up large amounts of memory

also check services if you like - use run command box and type services.msc and the snap in should appear - check to see if anything is unusual in there

Ok this is my last resort before i sell this piece-of-sh*t PC for whatever price i can get.

First, the specifics of my PC, although they're not really relevant for reasons i'll describe later:
Intel Core2Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 4GB DDR2, GF 8600GT, HD Samsung 500GB 7,200 RPM, etc...

I use Windows Vista Ultimate.

My problem is that the PC always behaves slowly as if it was a really lousy PC (its slower than other PCs we have here in the house that have like 5 times worse hardware).

It's not anything virus related because i've reformatted it countless times (and didn't reinstall/transfer the files that i previously had in the HD) and it always gets slow, with the same symptons, which include:
- Slow start of any software.
- After software is open, it behaves REALLY, IRRITATINGLY slow.
- Often, i have to open the same program (like internet explorer) several times before one of the boots has an acceptable speed (which is still not very good and may get slow again after a while of it opened or if i open "too many" windows -which for this crappy PC means around 5-10 IE windows).
- I used windows XP, then after it was so slow i decided to change to Windows Vista hoping that my PC would magically start running at the speed it should run. It did in the very beginning (a few days), then it went downhill after then and ever since i've reinstalled windows vista twice already.
- My PC runs slow even with ALL FIREWALLS and ANTIVIRUSES and ANTIT... Read more

It seemed like everyone yesterday was having a problem with Microsoft word being very slow because of NAV, and this may be why.

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A certificate which Verisign used for signing SSL certificates has expired. When applications which depend on that certificate try to make an SSL connection, they fail and try to access crl.verisign.com, the certificate revocation list server. This has effectively DOS'ed that site, and Verisign has now updated the DNS record for that address to include several non-routable addresses, reducing the load on their servers. Some applications affected include older Internet Explorer browsers, Java, and Norton Antivirus (which may manifest itself as Microsoft Word being very slow to start). Hope this helps a few people, and if you have other apps with problems, please post about them below.

Sometimes the antivirus can cause slowdowns (actually, often). I've heard AVG can be notorious for that. There are faster ones available, or you could use the built-in Defender antivirus instead, up to you. In addition, here are some ways to speed things up:
Optimize Performance of Windows 8
If it doesn't say outright, there are some programs that come with your computer that, if removed, you would experience a faster computer. Dells have all kinds of such programs with big important-sounding names that don't really benefit anything, in all truthfulness.

My computer has been teeth-grindingly slow for months. It takes forever to open a website with Chrome, Internet Explorer and Firefox and to open Microsoft Word and every other program on my computer. My antivirus is Avast Internet Security. I just now discovered that both Avast and Windows fIrewalls are on. Is it possible that this is the cause of the slowness problem? If so, which one should I turn off? BTW, I've uninstalled all the programs I wasn't using and I used CCleaner to up unnecessary files and registry entries. I researched which registry entries were safe to remove so cleaning things up hasn't caused any issues, but it hasn't improved things either.

Also, I used to have the free version of Avast and it worked great. I moved up to Avast Internet Security to have an extra layer of security. Is anyone else who is using this version of Avast having a problem with their computer being very slow?

Thanks in advance to everyone who responds.

it appears you have not just allowed the program to do its own thing...

it maybe you do have some form of malware

Hello everyone,

Before starting to tell you the problem i have to say i have opened another topic, which i had it closed(for my reasons), dealing with another pc.

The problem of the present pc is that it is very slow for no particurarly reason. Infact, this computer have few programmes installed and I don' t use this computer to download programmes.
Here the System Specs:

Windows 8 Operating systemIntel® Celeron ® CPU 1000M @ 1.80 Ghz 2GB RAM (1,82 usable)

I noticed through Task Manager that each time i power up the PC it uses 1,1/1,8 GB RAM  for no reason, even after 30 minutes and over until I shutdown it. However Task Manager don' t state the programme which uses so much memory.

Another annoying problem is that the audio often doesn' t work. i don' t understand: the audio sometimes works but it suddenly doesn' t work anymore.

I have Avast! Antivirus

I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Hello there,

I've noticed my comp has been a bit slower of late mostly not just for the net, but for opening programmes as well - even the 'favourites' list suddenly takes ages to load. Even programmes as basic as notepad seem affected. But the main issue is my 'clean disc' won't work. It got about a third of the way through and stopped, now it won't open at all.

I have AVG and ZoneAlarm running. Tried Spybot and Adaware, nothing. Tried Housecall, no viruses. Tried Pitstop, which said I needed to defrag, I was able to do that but I still can't clean the disc and the comp is getting slower and slower (and now refuses to even display google).

I've also noticed ZoneAlarm has been raising a lot more notifications than usual, but never to a named destination. The last ISP was 194.65.100.117NS.

Here is a HJT log from a few minutes ago, hope it shows something useful.

hi, i got great help here with my own computer, so i'm back again with another question, this time about another computer.

I am currently on a running windows xp home edition, IE 6.0. For some reason, the system has really been lagging lately and i'm not sure why. It was fine a a few months ago but it seems like there's something slowing it down now. It takes a long time to even just open something I double-click on on my desktop. And when i put a CD in, it'll read the information, but then i put another cd in and it will still show the same amount of songs as the previous cd. something's up with the system and i'm not sure what, so if you have any idea, i would greatly appreciate your help!! thanks! :)

A:slow system for no reason?

Could be many things, including a spyware infection. The first thing is to ensure your system is clean.

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, General tab. Select Delete Cookies, and then Delete Files to delete all your temporary Internet files (Note, this also will force the manual entry of usernames and passwords for sites requiring them on your next visit, so make sure you know them). If using Mozilla Firefox, go to Tools, Options, Privacy, and Clear All. We do this as there is no need to scan thousands of temporary files and to delete any corrupt cookies that may already be on your system.

For Windows Me and XP users, as an option, you might consider temporarily turn off System Restore to enable the scanners to clean any infected restore images. See here for instructions. This keeps malware hiding in restore images from coming back and re-infecting your systems. It may also be the reason for spyware scanners finding the same spyware over and over again. If that is happening, you should consider this option. IMPORTANT: This option removes all past restore point images.

Now scan for spyware. To ensure you have the latest scanner versions, download and install SpyBot Search and Destroy V1.3.1 TX (which includes the DSO false positive fix) from here. Before scanning, use the program?s update option to get the latest signature files, and then scan. Note: If you have been using SpyBot S&D for some time, chances are you have version 1.2. Same internet as roommate who has upwards of 12MB/s download, I have less than 400 kB/s. Same ISP. Tried switching modem ports to no avail. Tried downloading the same programs from same sites with same applications(mainly Steam and BitTorrent) and same background programs running, but we still have a massively different download rates. While this is the case for non-browser applications, downloads through the Chrome browser have had no issues at all. This applies to downloading games, music, video, and anything else we've tried. I have run anti-virus scans and manual checks of the task manager Processes and Details tabs, but nothing problematic shows up. The processes still say that nothing is using up the rest of the Network. Turning off firewalls and add-blockers had no effect. I've made sure that all my drivers are up to date.

This is where the strange part starts. When I run download/upload speed tests on the internet, I get the same numbers as my roommate. When I first start a download, it starts at the same speed as my roommate usually gets, but slows down to between 400-100 kB/s. When I pause download, it doesn't just stop, it slows down to a crawl *or* speeds up to about 600 kB/s and then slows down to a crawl before actually stopping the download (I don't know if this is strange or not but it doesn't seem right). This process can take up to a few minutes. When I un-pause downloads after they've fully stopped, it shoots up to... Read more

Hello, my computer is slow for no reason. I am running on Windows 8.1 with a Packard Bell Computer.
System Specs:
Packard Bell
Windows 8.1 Operating system
AMD A4-5000 APU processor with 1.50 GHz
6GB RAM
( Please thouroughly read everything I am about to say )
I am at the end of my rope here as to why my computer is running ridiculously slow. I have used Norton Internet Security to eradicate every piece of malware, tracking cookie, trojan, virus, etc.
I have looked through my registry and manually deleted any and all useless keys left by deleted programs and every single harmful registry key from there and still no improvement. I have used the Disk Defragmenter many times but my PC doesn't get fragmented much at all. I hae used the Disk Cleanup to free all the space I can and my computer is really clean and uncluttered. It can't be the internet connection I have since this slowness does not affect anyone else in my house, just me.

So to recap:
Perfectly clean registry, devoid of harmful keys or useless software keys
No trace of any piece of malware/trojan/tracking cookie/virus, etc.
Fully optimized using Disk cleanup AND Defrag
No internet troubles for anyone else, just me so it must be my computer.
Also, my computer does not have very many programs or files on it at all.

So, my question is this:
Taking all of that into account, what could possibly be causing my computer's slowness?
I just don't know what to do anymore and it is very frustrating.

A:Slow computer for absolutely no reason.

Welcome to TSF.

3 reasons your computer is slow:
AMD A4-5000,
Norton,
Packard Bell.

A similar PC to yours benchmarked: PassMark Software - Display Baseline ID# 271766

There's a distinct possibility that NIS might have missed something or wrongly flagged something as suspicious and removed it.

If I were you, I'd begin by running a check for any remnant malware and removing heavyweight software like NIS: NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help - Tech Support Forum <- study this carefully and follow it as closely as you can.

Hi there-

I know this sounds like a typical issue and it is, but the problem is, I can't determine what is making startup time for my system, which is not a low-end machine per se, so slow.

I have, in the past, unchecked just about every unnecessary startup program and process I could in msconfig, and have run multiple virus and malware scans, etc. but to no avail.

Perhaps someone can help me through what could be the issue, maybe a Hijack this analysis or something?

My PC:

HP Pavilion dv6
Intel Core i7-2670QM/2.20GHz
8 GB RAM
64-Bit

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

A:Slow Startup, No Discernable Reason

1) Please define "slow". How long does it take to boot to the desktop?

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

3) Rather than unchecking individual items in msconfig, have you tried a selective startup? If not, here's how:

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a dedicated app such as Autoruns (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

Ok, we've had this new PC for about a year or so now. The reason we got a new comp is because our old XP one only had 256 ram and was riddled with "junk" all thanks to my brothers >_>

Anyway this new one is just as slow if not slower and I can't figure out why. Here are the specs (just copying the system information here):

Dell Inspiron 530

Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 420 @1.60GHz 1.60GHz

1013MB RAM

32bit Operating System. Vista (Home Basic)

Hope you guys can make more sense of that than I can.

I've checked that nothing hidden is eating up the CPU and as far as I can see its ok. So basically Im thinking I should up the memory to 2GB right? Would there definitely be an improvement if I did? Cos it wouldn't be my money getting spent on additional RAM.

Sorry to ask such stupid questions but my family think I'm supposed to be some sort of tech wizard, it was me who persauded them to get a new PC saying it would be faster and I feel pretty bad that its just as crap as the old one

Thanks in advance.

A:Vista slow for no discernable reason?

G'day Pench,
Who hasn't suffered from this occasionally?! Before you try anything too daring, give this app a try, it will do no harm, and has sorted out my Acer/Vista nicely.

http://www.download.com/Advanced-Wi...-AdvancedW&subj=uo&tag=button&cdlPid=10890240

DO NOT use the green "Download here" button - that's something else. Use "Download now (6.24MB)" link. You will be surprised at the errors you'll find. AWC v2 will clean them up pronto. If in the unlikely event something weird happens (it won't) you can restore within the application.

If you still have problems, more basic trouble shooting might be needed, but this is a good start. (No, I am not affiliated with these people!)

Good luck

Last night I used the dell bootup diagnostic utility to run hardware tests and
there were no errors

Hello all,
I built a computer about eight months ago now, and as of the last month, I have noticed a significant slowing down of many functions of the PC. Boot up times taking over a minute, over five minutes for all startup programs to open, things like Chrome and even file explorer taking up to 20 seconds to open, programs not responding a little to frequently, and other odd little things like this. Any ideas as to what this could be? My PC specs are in the computer description linked to my account.

Hi, I got home Wednesday night from work and my computer has been REALLY slow. It also hangs for no foreseeable reason ever since and I've also noticed I/O errors when attempting to back up certain audio files on my external.
Example: "Error 0x8007045D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." (when attempting to move one specific .wav file)

Also, a new symptom that has recently and currently been making itself aware to me is: while typing this thread the prompt randomly moves around at unpredictable times, usually resulting in finishing or starting a word in a random undesired location within the post. Hard to explain really, but i thought i would include it, because it is extremely annoying and thus seems virus-ey. Sounds to me like some program is stealing priority, my friend thinks it's Windows Update.

About 8 hours prior to this slow/hanging activity (before i left for work), it was working fine, though i did notice similar hanging-like activity localized solely in Google maps.

What i've done so far:
- backed up important files on my external
- ran process explorer and checked the CPU, RAM, and I/O usage to find nothing out of the ordinary (low cpu, normal RAM usage, low i/o usage)
- ran a virus scan using Microsoft Security Essentials

I'm at a loss as to what i can do at this point; it's unbearably slow...i can't ... Read more

On the "General" tab, you will see 3 startup options and select "Diagnostic startup" and click OK. Your system will be restarted in diagnostic startup mode to see if it runs faster.

Hey everyone, Im new here, as in just registered like 10 minutes ago.

Anyway, I came across this tech forum in with some confidence after google searching.

Ok so here it goes.

Yesterday I installed Cubase Sx3, a Yamaha Driver for my keyboard, V-stack, and a few other VST instruments.

After doing all this and restarting, I realized my computer was unnaturally slow.

For example, Ill be waiting a good minute to a minute and a half for FireFox to pop up, and everytime the UAC window comes up im waiting on the grayed out screen for a good 15-20 seconds, media player takes forever and whenever i open a new window or program it takes so long to load up i generally encounter "not responding" messages.

Somethings Amiss

I run on 2 Gb of Ram, and 2 GHz processor speed which has lasted me reasonably fine for the past 2 years.

I ran a virus check with Avast 4, and a Registry Scan with RegistryFix
and it found errors but repaired them, assuming that would solve my problems, but it didnt.

Needless to say im frustrated. so, if anyone can help me out, that would be great.

Im uninstalling everything I put into my computer yesterday to see if that helps me at all.

A:Slow Operating System for no reason!?

You could try do uninstall the new hardware and see if performance issue persists or not?
If everything is OK then.. you could download update drivers..

Also is the system slow in safe mode? What is the free disk space available?

For some reason my high speed cable internet is acting slow. It will open my homepage fast (google), it will bring up fast search results for anything i type in, but when I click on any link to a web page it gets real slow. it take like 10 seconds for it to bring up my hotmail email too. It used to come up in like 2-3... I use spybot search and destroy, ad-aware 6, and norton antivirus and it is not picking up anything. I defrag and delete cookies and files often and still no increase in speed. I ran HijackThis and here is what it gave me.

A:Help,My IBM computer very slow for no apparent reason?

Your log is clean, but I will recommend some tools to try:

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Download and install Spybot S&D. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

a few days ago i downloaded auslogics disk defrag, registry cleaner, registry defrag, and speedboost(full version my friend let me borrow his)

And after i use all of the programs my computer got slower and constanly keeps freezing.I had 2 anti-viruses(eset nod 32 and malwarebytes)

i removed those 2 and downloaded mircosoft security essencials then i also removed the auslogics programs.

later my computer got a little bit better(stoped freezing and it speeded up a lil)

but after two days of it speeding up it got back to normal and keep on freezing and getting slow.

i used system restore to the only point i had(when it stopeed freezing and it got fast)

but it still freezes, what am i suppost to do now ? i used ccleaner and defraggler but still doesnt work(slow and freezes)

A:Constanly freezing and got slow for no reason

Age can be an issue
When computers get older, so does the amount of data and metadata, .tmp files, blah, blah, blah It gets gunked up. Solution: Fresh Install of Windows, it clean and fix the slow down and freezes, because it got rid of some software that you've installed in the past.

Hardware deficiencies:
With out knowing your pc spec (please list them on your reply) You might not have enough RAM. Solution more RAM

The inside of your computer might be very dusty. I had this dell that was heavily used by everyone in my family. It ran and ran and ran, until one day it would turn on for a few mins and then shut off and reboot and shut off again. I opened the case and blew out as much of the dust as I could. I was a little better. Instead of a few mins, this Dell would stay on for several mins. What I didn't realized was to open up the fan scoop that was on top of my heat-sink and fan. When I did, it was a dust carpet on top of the heat sink.. Pretty much two or three year of neglect will do that to a computer.
Solution: open up the class and careful clean out all the dust that you can with short burst of compressed air.

Your hard drive might be telling you something subconsciously. It might be getting old and about to kick the bucket. THIS SOLUTION WILL BE EXPENSIVE. Buy a copy of SpinRite @www.grc.com it's about $89. It'll be the best thing you'll ever do. When I say expensive, it will be expensive if you don't use this software. Because your... Read more

I have two computers hooked up. Both ran the internet pretty fast until a few days ago when I noticed a significant slow-down on my laptop. The other one runs pretty fast still, but this one takes a lot longer. It's a hell of a lot newer and faster too. I am wondering if there is a way to check if something bad is installed on my computer that is messing with my internet speed? Nothing suspicious appears to be running in the process window.

Thanks.

A:Internet Is Slow For No Apparent Reason

Try using Ad-aware or Spybot Search and destroy. Thats about the best I've got to say, but i suppose you could also try cleaning your computer to get rid of all the dust...

Also, you can always reboot the router.

Do you leave your computer on all the time? I think it doesn't help for speed either...

Hi!

Before I go on I'd just like to stress how crap I am with computers and stuff, so if someone is kind enough to give me advice, please try and keep it dunce-friendly.

PC: Windows XP
Broadband: Toucan (think it's a Tiscali offshoot)
I'm using a wireless router-come-modem

Recently I've been having lots of trouble with my internet and I have no idea what's causing it. Sometimes it will run as quickly as it's supposed to but most of the time it goes incredibly slow. This has only really occurred during the past week or so.

I'm not sure if it's a virus, because I ran Spybot the other day and it gave me a clean bill of health.

Hi, my computer has been acting really weird lately. Ever since I removed the computer fan to clean it and Installed it back, it starts to get laggy and slow. Everything becomes so laggy and slow. Occasionally, my computer restarts every 5-10 mins. I think it is because of blue screen? Sometimes the blue screen pops up and sometimes it doesnt.
Thanks,
bing

A:PC shuts down by itself for no reason, slow and lagging

What fan...did you remove?  A system has several fans in it.

If you removed the heatsink...did you reapply thermal lubrication?
