Error decompressing data. Corrupted installer?

Q: Error decompressing data. Corrupted installer?

I recently purchased Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 (2 disk set). I have the first one installed but I get the error message- "Error decompressing data. Corrupted installer?" when I get to models.bif during the installation. I am currently using windows 8 (obviously) but the recommended specs for the games say windows 7. I do not know if this would effect the installation, if so is there a way for me to get windows 7? Any kind of feedback on my problem would be much appreciated. I would also like to apologize if I'm posting in the wrong sub-forum. I'm a little iffy on what the problem actually is.

Even just a simple- Sorry, we can't help will suffice as feedback at the moment.

Preferred Solution: Error decompressing data. Corrupted installer?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

it could be that disk 2 is a bad disk. you could try installing in compatibility mode good luck
Compatibility Mode - Use in Windows 8

to get win7 you would need to purchase it from most computer stores

I recently assembeled a new PC and every .exe I download has an error (typed out, word for word, below. There is no error number, I promise.). I have no idea why. This is a brand new, fresh installation of WinXP without any updates yet, no viruses, no spyware, no enabled firewall. Initially, we thought it was bad ram or a failed winXP install, but even with new ram and a fresh format, this problem persists. The HD worked fine on my old machine, the pieces are all compatable as well. Can someone help me, either via this post or email, to figure out what is causing this error and how to correct it? Please do not tell me to download adaware or spybot / run an antivirus checker, I've done these steps at nauseum and they are not the issue. I have also determined that an enabled firewall / antivirus system is not corrupting my files.

NSIS Error

The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.
This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus.

You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy.

It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command line switch (NOT RECOMMENDED)

Hi there!

I've got one strange problem over here that is the same as this guys.

All files that I download that are bigger than 50MB fail in the install/decompressing process?

I've had this computer for three weeks and in the beginning I dl the UT2004 demo with out a problem so it seems that this hasn't been there the whole time.

I'm not much of a computer guy myself but I have 3friends in the field that have come up with 3 different possibilities

One thought that Ad-Aware maybe deleted some file?

Do you guys have any idea what could be the problemo ?

Here comes a description of my computer:

Hello all,

My copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my laptop has been having some strange issues lately. I cannot run .msi files, and device manager never populates a full list. Sometimes (rarely, but it does repeat) Windows Explorer will freeze, and if I attempt to close it and reopen it using task manager, the UI reloads, but whenever I click on a folder it claims Windows cannot load explorer. Restarting fixes that. I scheduled and ran CHKDSK, and it repaired a few bad sectors, but it didn't fix any of these problems. I have run CCleaner (both the regular cleaner and registry fixer) and defragmented my hard drive until it's only 1% fragmented. I then tried sfc /scannow, and it read a bunch of corrupted files but could not repair them. I read that to fix sfc, you must download and run Windows System Update Readiness Tool. It has been running and "Searching for Updates on this Computer" for about an hour now, and I'm getting concerned that it's just not doing anything. It's not frozen, the bar keeps moving from left to right and I can click on and off of it. I also have the logs from sfc if anyone wants to take a look at them, they'll be attached. The computer isn't very old, and has an intel i3 and 4gb of ram. If you would like any extra information to help, please reply and I'll get back to you as fast as I can Any recommendations on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for any and all help!

Hi Qujibo,
First comment you said ran ccleaner REGISTRY cleaner, this is not advised, unless you know what your doing

If there is an UNDO backup from that utility RUN it.

SURT can quite easily run for a couple of hours.

There are a lot of Winsxs errors in your log.

Hi everyone..

My external USb Wd mybook box has 1 tb Seagate Sata 3 and i use original Wd disc as W7 installed... in My PC Case as sata II

Today my old problem appears again as Corrupted disc...
I have Get Data Back NTFS (and i used before plenty of times for recovery, loss data or unwanted deletions) but..

This time im stuck.. Becouse the disk i try to recover includes 870 gb (about) used disk space (only audio files) only 50gb (about) empty space... Thats too big for me to recover to other disks.. i don't have enough spaces that my other disks can handle..

I have about 300 gb FREE disk space in several disks or partitions include My thinkpad SL510 Notebook..
So my question is
wit keeping my lost data in corrupted disk first, can i take them slowly to this 300 gb spaces (i know i can) and after create somehow emty space (deleting those recovered 300 gb + 50 on corrupted disk) and
use that empty space for more recovery. ???? Or smilar solutions.. Becouse DISC PRICES IS HEAVY nowadays and really i'm out of budget with buying some
equipments upgrades..
Like creating slowly slowly some extra spaces (don't know how)

I know i look silly in situation becouse i know u should never write to same disc if you dont want to say goodbye to your files..

I recently discovered a program I had downloaded a while ago is laced with a virus and deleted it. I scanned and removed all viruses and spyware, but kept seeing spyware pop up when I haven't even done a thing later in the day. I rebooted and did a max level heuristic boot scan and found 3-4 rootkits and this installer problem.

Documents and settings\(my name)\local settings\temp\GLBBB.tmp|>wise0003.bin error 42145 {installer archive is corrupted}

Some of the rootkits were in the program I had downloaded but one was in the system restore folder which has been dealt with. My system seems to be operating fully again but is there any action I should take about the installer archive?

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, do the following:
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and... Read more

So I've been trying to install kaspersky free for the past few hours but to no avail.

The installer runs fine but during the downloading phase of it, it downloads normally for 51.8mb out of the 156.6mb then starts to "download" very fast all the way to 156.6 mb, after that the installer states that the installer is corrupted and the only fix that I can find online is download the installer and try again. But I've done that at least 5 times already but I keep running into the same issue

I've also deleted the previous installers before trying again, cleared cache using ccleaner, manually searched for my remnants and deleted them before trying again. I've also manually disabled windows defender before the install. But all the while I still come back to the same issue.

Has any faced this issue before? Any other fixes you think I should try?

I forgot to take a screenshot of it but it seems that other people are facing it too, here is a screenshot from the kaspersky forums that matches what I see as well

Hello, i had a bad case of win32.virut.x, after finally getting it away, i realised it infected a lot of files on my computer, ending up with a lot of them getting corrupted in the end (mostly things i can just reinstall or repair without a problem)

so right now, my taskmgr is corrupted giving me an "unknown software exception (0xc00000096) at location 0x7c9ec062" (i'd write down the whole error message but it's in dutch language), followed by a crash of taskmgr.exe (it never really appeared in the first place anyways, just the error), then followed by my visual studio just in time debugger

also, i can't seem to install anything anymore that uses the windows installer, it tells me that the setup failed cause it couldn't access the windows installer and tells me to boot in normal mode if i'm in safe mode (and i'm not)

many thanks for your help in advance!!

i have some big problems with my MSI. Some days ago i realized MSI didn't install anything, because when i downloaded a .msi file, the installation bar remained empty, never progress and the install application freezes and i had to close it with task manager. So, i tried to fix my Win installer with renaming the files with old, reregister, but i get "msiexec.exe" ordinal not found, impossible find the 280 ordinal in the link dynamic library msi.dll (something like that) when i try to install an exe related with MSI, and the msi and exe files of windows i get this insufficient memory... (also with MSI installer for fixing it). So i cannot also fix with a reinstall. I noticed also some system slowness, my audio got silent and i had to reinstall driver but i get a mono sound instead of stereo, msn didn't work and it freezes when i try to contact someone and my Windows Update didn't work, first i got an unknown error, now seems the service is stopped ....I have no viruses which do this, i made a scan too.
Seems a very bad situation...
I tried also to reinstall Win vista with a recovery CD but when i put my ID code key it says isn't valid .I don't have a OEM install cd because you know, never give you these things... I tried also the Acer erecovery thing but when i try to restore like "new" the laptop, it happen nothing, only the system restart. Maybe the laptop didn't recognize anymore the hidden partition for recovery?
Thanks in advance.

A:Windows Installer corrupted and other problems related to it

Go to Start Menu, type "cmd". Right-click on it (when found), and click "Run as Administrator". Then, in the command line, type "sfc /scannow" and press enter, and let it scan.

If that doesn't work, you can (and probably should anyway), run from the command prompt "chkdsk c: /r"

Without the original OEM CD you won't be able to do a repair install.

Hello all, I have a Logitech C910 which I am beginning to regret over the C920 I almost bought instead. Mine has the bigger sensor but is only 720P and slightly less options. I recently recorded an almost 40min high def video that was immediately compressed when finished. I couldn't stop it and wish I could. I was able to find the setting to make future vids high-def / large files but now i'm stuck with this vid that looks Terrible. It's pixelated and the color is all washed out, it's just bad and almost completely unwatchable.

Can someone tell me how to reverse what my webcam did to it? In shorter vids it doesn't compress and the vids look great for a webcam. What is the best app and tool I can use to extract the quality back out?

Edit: My C910 is the Pro one not sure if there is a diff one but it is 1080P for video recording, only 720P max for video calling, the C920 does 1080P video but with Skype only just thought I should throw that comparison out there, I am glad I went with C910 I think. Too many reports of blurryness on C920 but I really wish the C910 compressed into H.264 codec like the C920 instead of Mpeg4.

Good Morning.

I was trying to backup some files to a DVD-R. I compressed them first as .rar and then burned them using Nero Start Smart. When I went back to download the files from the disc I discovered that Nero had put the whole group of .rar files into one .nri file. When I clicked on it to open it, it brings up the window where you can add files.
I have tried several different programs and have been unsuccessful in decompressing or extracting the files from that .nri. Regular ISO extracting programs don't work.
Do you all know of any program that will allow you to open the .nri file and extrat the files or decompress them?

Thank you for your support.

Is it a standard NTFS-compressed file? If so, it can be decompressed with the "expand" command, NTFSRatio, or eXPander.

I just had a little alert pop up on my system tray, telling me that a file was corrupted in the Prefetch data folder and to run chkdsk. I think I know what I did, I uninstalled Limewire in favor of another program, and did a search for anything to do with Limewire, including hidden files, and deleted them.

I figure since I don't have Limewire on the computer anymore, there's no harm done, right? It doesn't actually affect the integrity of the XP OS, does it? I'd hate to have to reinstall everything again for the umpteenth time, especially after I just purchased Acronis True Image.

A:Corrupted Prefetch Data?

I think you will be ok. Please do the following :Download install and update CcleanerAttention : the installation package comes with the Yahoo toolbarif you do not want that you have to, untick the box accepting it during installation process. After installing and updating go to options - advanced and tick prompt for registry back upsNow Start up in safe modeDo two runs1) Click on problems and tick all. Click on analyse. At the end you will be prompted for storing a backup. This will be stored, as a default, in My documents.2) Click on cleaner click on analyse and accept all files to be removed.

I bought a 16gb usb key from best buy a few months back. I used it for some normal every day jpg/doc transfer/backup. In the past few weeks I notice that data have been missing or corrupted from the key. Yesterday I copied about 400 images to it, today when I plug the key in, nothing is there. I did a normal format on the key before I made the copy yesterday. This is really strange, I wonder if I am doing something wrong? I have had some no name brand refurbished usb keys from many years before and never had any issues. Is there a way to check if the key is bad?

A:usb key missing or corrupted data..

You can test it with this free program :- http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/H2testw.shtml

It writes data to the stick then reads it back to check it's not corrupted.

Click on the first screen to choose English (unless you know German). Then click the 'Select Target' button and browse to the Usb stick. It's best to format the stick first so the program can test it all.

I was trying to install Cyberlink PowerDVD on my windows, but after running setup, I got this message:
"The contents of this file cannot be unpacked. The executable you are attempting to run has been corrupted. Please obtain another copy of the file, verify its integrity, and try again."
I copied the setup folder to "Folder A" on my pc, tried running setup from HDD, and same error occured.
Then started windows in safe mode. ran setup from DVD again, and there was no problem. then tried setup from "Folder A", and again error. copied setup from DVD to "Folder B" on HDD and restarted windows XP sp2 normally.
Again tried both setups in normal session of windows. Setup will not run from "Folder A" which was copied under normal session of windows and will run from "Folder B" which was copied under safe mode.
I think "Folder A" contains corrupted data.
I also had this problem with some other installations/archives.

BTW I tried to run PowerDVD's setup under Windows vista and there was no problem.

at last you can find my computer info attached.
(my DVD drive is Sata)

What you think the problem is?

Okay, so I have an external harddrive (1tb) which has about 300 gigs of media on it. I was running TuneUp Utilities 2009 and one of the things it suggested was running disk scans of all the hard drives. I restarted the computer as instructed, and when it rebooted it started a disk scan of G: (the external HDD) as expected. It got to about 7%.

My common sense then hurled itself as far away from me as it possibly could and I decided to cancel the scan and run it another time when I didn't need the computer. So, I turned off the computer using the power button. Turned it back on, no problems, except half of the data on the external HDD is messed up. Same amount of space used up on it, but half of the folders all the contents are garbled. Folders and files that can't be deleted because the names are too long/invalid, all screwed up.

Fortunately, the other half of it seems alright. So...I'm willing to cut my losses and copy off the unharmed stuff and format the G: drive, but first I wanted to know if there was anything I could possibly do to salvage the rest of it.

Thanks in advance

I know I did 2 things wrong:
1) I didn't back up my hard drive
2) I turned off my computer in the middle of a Windows update

That being said, here is the story:

I had a 4 year old machine with XP loaded, and got a shiny new computer for Christmas (2010). I was in a hurry to swap the computers, and figured I could transfer the data later. So, while I was logging out of the old XP computer, I saw that a Windows update was installing. Snickering, I figured I would never need the computer again, and SHUT THE POWER OFF. After much research, and lots of regret, I understand I should never have done that.

When I tried to boot the old XP computer back up to transfer the data, it went into an endless boot/power off loop. Trying to boot in safe mode did not work. All options tried, including boot from a previous time, boot from last known good point, etc. Just a continuous boot/power off cycle.

I bought a IDE/SATA to USB cable which comes with a hard drive power supply, opened the hood, and hooked up the hard drive to my new computer.

[caveat: I did this the previous day to my 7 year old computer running Win98 and it worked perfectly]

I open the My Computer folder, plug in the USB, and 1st the recovery portion of the XP hard drive appears, then another hard drive appears (J:). The status bar progresses like it's loading data, then just stops. I left it for hours, no progress. I unhooked everything, powered down, and tried again, same result.

Is it possible to install this old drive internally in the new PC? If you were to connect the drive with Disk Management open (close My Computer) how are the partitions of the old drive displayed? Do both show normal file systems?

This is my first post in this forum.
The Problem:
Today, I decided to defragment and optimise my 2TB external Hard Disk using Auslogics Defragmenter. Now, a little background here. The partition that I defragmented was a 1.8TB partition encrypted by VeraCrypt, a fork of TrueCrypt. After the defragmentation was completed, I found that several files have been corrupted. The files in which I could detect the corruption were all compressed files, compressed using Windows 10's default compression. I opened the files up in WinHex and I saw a curious thing: The end of all these corrupted files had a block of "DF DF DF" sequence. I am attaching a screenshot to illustrate the matter. Here is the Screenshot of the Problem.

Please note that, though the picture shows it's an arc file, it was still compressed by Windows compression. The curious thing is that, even though the files had those DF chunks, a cursory HEX Search of the raw data hard drive did not yield any such sequence. Of course, I didn't have the time to scan the whole 2TB HDD for those sequences.

I was scouring the internet for any sort of clue and I have found this: farmanager.com/enforum/viewtopic.php?t=318. Is the DF chunk some sort of compression voodoo?
Could you tell me if there is any way to possibly solve the problem? I already ran a Data Recovery Software but to no avail. I am absolutely frantic, and would be grateful if you could kindly help me solve the problem.

Hi All,

My sister went into her folder on out External HDD, and found this:

Can anyone shine a light as to what has happened? I tihnk it may have something to do with a slight power problem we had a couple of days ago, when we suddenly lost power to the computer and once power was restored, I had to unplug the HDD in order to get it to be recognized on the computer. not sure if this could be the problem though as a file I put on there a couple of days a go has also screwed up.

However, the strangest thing is that the HDD is recognising this folder as being 58.5gb. Its not the only folder with this problem. All up theres around 6-7 folder that are all showing the same problem, and all showing a stupidly high amount fo GB's being taken up. however, when added together, they apparently make nearly a TB of Data, yet the 256gb HDD isn't saying its full and in fact has 80 odd GB's free. Also, I cannot delete any of these folder.

Can anyone be of any help?

A:[SOLVED] Corrupted Data on HDD

Hello Matthew, Welcome to TSF!

I would say that due to that power fluctuation you had, the data on this Drive is now corrupt and useless. Sorry!

If you can't read any of the files/folders, the only way to get your external HDD to work again would be to wipe it completely with an eraser-type program, such as, Darik's Boot N Nuke, or Killdisk; then, format it.

Hi guys,

I have a problem installing downloaded things on XP. I've racked various peoples brains about this but as of yet I haven't been able to find a cure to this annoying problem.

I tried to download adobe acrobat reader, and a demo of a pc game called rFactor.
Acrobat downloads but when it decrompresses it to install it, I get an error saying the file is corrupted. This simply isn't true, I have installed the identical file on my pc downstairs and on friends PC's before, and since I encountered my problems.
Similar problem with the rFactor install, the file downloads, but then when I try to install it I get a message saying "Error decompressing data! Corrupted installer?" which again, I know to be not true because I have since downloaded and installed in downstairs.

Seems to be something in the way that it's being downloaded. I have tried it with Firefox and I am trying the download with IE as I type. This is a new hard drive with a clean install of Windows XP Professional, service pack 2 has NOT been installed and windows has not been updated in any way (it fails the authenification tests because this copy has been round the doors).

Thanks for your help, in advanced, much appreciated.

Ok im so damn annoyed! Recently for some unknown reason half my pcs files have been compressed. Its literally a hotch botch of compressed blue files and uncompressed black ones.
Is there any way I can get my pc to uncompress the compressed files all at the same time and leave the uncompressed files ?
Its so annoying , it hasnt even done it in any particular order so i cant just click a root folder and do them all because if theres just one uncompressed file in a folder it wont give me the option to decompress.
Ive tryed a system restore but it doesnt do anything.
Any help on this would be gratefully recieved. Its literally affected every part of my pc in one way or another , some windows files , some program files , some music files , why hasnt it done a proper job and left shed loads in the first place ? ARRRRGH !

Hi All,
I m the newbee here, i read through the forum on windows 7 usb problem, however, i cannot find what i have encounted exactly, mostly you guys have the problem either stopped on the usb data transfer from windows 7 PC to a usb HDD or flash drive; or crashed and give errors. However, i dont encount this sreious problem but rather annoying problem.
As soon as i use my Windows 7 PC to copy a file to usb stick, the process is all ok, but when i read the file, it seems to be corrupted, example, if i have put a avi file in the usb drive, it will play as skipped.
I have updated the hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972 but still doesnt fix my problem. I have updated the chipset driver from nvidia web site, still no help.

I know for sure that problem occured after i fresh installed to windows 7 from xp pro.

I have also tried to uninstall the usb root hub but still give me the same driver as it was.

anyone has similar problem? please advise, thanks alot,

Hi and welcome

One way to narrow the problem down would be to use a different copy utility like teracopy. if the problem changes its in win 7 if not might be hardware or driver

Good luck

Hi there,

I need to extract a file from an old 3.5" floppy disk. However, I am unable to access it using an external A drive. When I try and access it, I hear the drive spinning for about a minute before I get the following message:

"You need to format the disk in drive A: before you can use it. Do you want to format it? Yes/No"

"No," then more spinning, then:

"A:\ is not accessible. The disk media is not recognized. It may not be formatted."

The reason that I'm not just accepting that the disk is a no-hoper is because I have a variety of old floppies which I've been trying to access recently and some I managed to access in spite of this message.

Those that I managed to do this with sounded like there was a mechanical problem when the disk span, so I tore the metal shutter off and that allowed me to access them. However, that hasn't worked with this disk and it's the only one I actually need to get data from!

I have made a cusory attempt to recover the data using EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard but because Explorer won't access the disk, the program doesn't see the drive. I've tried multiple external drives too so I know there's not a problem there.

Does anyone know of any way I might be able to access this disk? Because of the way I managed to access the other disks when they gave the exact same message, I'm convinced it's not entirely corrupted.

I'd be very grateful for any help.

A:Recovering Data from an Old (Corrupted?) Floppy

I know of no way to do that. The floppies are just magnetic media, and given how old the data is, I'd not waste time trying to get it off (unless it's not backed up, of course). But truth told, I'm not certain it can be done satisfactorily.

I have recently been having trouble installing and running various programs on my computer (mainly microsoft office 2007 and itunes 9), when i do try to install the programs a microsoft window pops up and says "an error occurred while trying to create the directory C:DocumentsandSettings/AllUsers/Application Data"

I did try to resolve the problem by using my windows XP service pack 2 CD and completed the sfc /scannow (yes, with the space between sfc and /) yet i still cannot use many of my programs.

I have tried this solution twice now, restarting my computer before the second attempt, the scan took approximately 30mins each time.

Also, whenever i am able to use a program, a beige pop up appears in the notification area of the taskbar (near the clock) above a yellow triangle with an exclaimation mark inside, stating (for example, my security centre) "CA Security Centre: casc.exe - Corrupt File the file or directory \DocumentsandSettings/AllUsers/Application Data is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."

I did run "Chkdsk /f", yet the computer says that it cannot lock the current drive.

I was wondering if there were any other possible solutions to my problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Corrupted Application Data File

DocumentsandSettings is the wrong format - it is Documents and Settings.

\DocumentsandSettings/AllUsers/Application Data is thwe wrong format - it is \Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data

'I did run "Chkdsk /f", yet the computer says that it cannot lock the current drive.'

An in-service drive cannot be checked - usually is asks if you would like to do this at the next boot. Did it?
