Dell Latitude D600 black screen.

Q: Dell Latitude D600 black screen.

I am trying to fix a friends Dell D600 Latitude Laptop.

They are not very good with computers, and they thought it had a virus so gave it to me to look at.

But when i try to turn it on all the lights light up and it makes a sound like it is going to boot, but doesnt actually boot up. The screen is completely blank. I have taken out the memory and put it back in, tried pressing every F button and using Fn which some people suggested online.

But nothing works, i have also tried putting in the XP disc and also connecting it to another monitor and pressing Fn +F8 but still nothing.

I don't want to give up on it. :(

I am not a computer expert but it makes a noise when i press it on, so to me it still has life

Is there anything i can do??

Preferred Solution: Dell Latitude D600 black screen.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just got a new Dell Latitude d600 laptop. I used it today at work sometimes without power cord and sometimes with. I left it up for about 1 hour and later today for some reason it wont power up. I suspect the battery has run down but I have a power cord and it still wont power up. Does anyone have any insight on how to trouble shoot to see what the issue is?

Hi ALL, I am in dire need of some help so I can hopefully fix this laptop before I leave abroad Monday.

I bought this laptop about a year ago, and a few months ago a cd walkman (of ALL things) fell onto the keyboard and smacked it really hard. It pretty much broke the toshiba hard drive inside, (i know next to nothing about hard drives) but I KNEW it broke because of the constant clicking/squeaking and beeps.. thus resulting in me buying a new hard drive from Ebay, from an ad stating it was a hard drive compatible for the d600. So I went ahead and took out the caddy, carefully slid out the old hard drive and slid the new one in. Screwed it shut, made sure everything was in place and of course I boot up, the primary hard drive is showing a big 0 and cannot boot. I boot to windows xp disc, and it will not download onto the hard drive because it is showing up as missing, and showing up as NONE in bios where it says PRIMARY HARD DRIVE. I really did not know what to do. I went into bios and reset the bios, nothing. I opened up the case as somebody mentioned to me to take the battery off of the mother board and put it back on again to erase prior CMOS(?) and I could not even find where the battery plugs onto the mother board to take it off (just two wires, god knows where they connect). I was also told to check the jumpers. I found NO jumpers. I saw where the hard drive plugs to the mother board on that lil caddy but did not find any jumper cables. I also did the Diagnostic test, ... Read more

A:Dell Latitude d600 Will Not Recognize ANY HD Pls Help!!

You can't assume a drive is good just because it's new.
OTH, the fact you can't detect even the old drive suggests you've connected something incorrectly, or there was additional damage from the Walkman crash.
I suggest you start over and double-check all the connectors.

I got an older laptop from my aunt. I finally found a working AC adapter for it and plugged the laptop in and wait a few minutes, then I tried to turn it on, it caused a light in the shape of a battery to turn on. Pressing the button on the battery reveals that all 5 lights come on, so I assume the battery is charged. What happened?

Hello!, My Dell Latitude D600 has stopped working for about a week now and I've been searching through many forums on how to fix it. I have a mixed variety of symptoms. When I try to turn on normally (Just holding down the power button) All the lights, caps lock, scroll lk, power, etc except the battery light but then turn off after a few seconds. Also, when I hold down the power button, and windows button all the lights go on, then the battery light goes red, and then the computer starts to run. (I can hear the fan, and the CD Drive starts working) but the computer monitor still remains black. I have left it like that for a few minutes, but the same symptoms still occur after. Any feed back on this would help, thanks in advance!

A:Dell Latitude D600 won't boot up!

It could be a problem with the power supply or possibly the motherboard. I had that model and im guessing its at least 7 years old.I got rid of mine because the motherboard went and it wasnt worth fixing.

A friend (honest) has the above notebook which he bought second-hand. He used the machine without problems for one year.
He upgraded to Ms Windows XP sr2 but about a month later when booting the machine it displayed -
Hard-disk #***********-595B, the system Primary HDD, is protected by password authentication system. You cannot access data on this hard drive without the correct password.
He tells me that he did not even know that the computer had a hard disk password system and he has never set any passwords on it at all. He has many pictures on the disk which he hopes not to lose.
I cannot find a solution on either the Dell or Hitachi websites and haven't been able to reach Dell by telephone since mid December but a Google search led me here. I have seen replies from Rustam providing generated passwords but his/her private mailbox is full.

Is anybody able to provide me with the HDD password please, the machine details are -
BIOS rev A14
system number #83P7H1J-595B
service tag 83P7H1J

If the disk can be unlocked, is it better to create a master password and a new HDD password or disable all passwords (in case this happens again)

best wishes and a happy new year

A:Dell Latitude d600 HDD locked

Its unlikely adding XP would set a password, your friend or someone must have set it.

Rustam isnt here anymore, your only choice is to go to my site and find the link for repair station, a website that offers remote unlocking of drives, they charge and dont cover all models.

Good luck

My laptop has been acting up lately. I will be working and suddenly the system will freeze. No matter what I do, there will be no response. Cntl+Alt+Delete does not work. I have to press the power button to turn off the laptop. Sometimes, when it boots up, it gives me the blue screen asking if it should use the last restore or reboot normal. I always reboot normal. Sometimes the reboot will hang too and I will have to turn off the laptop by pressing the power button. Sometimes everything will be OK. Can it be my harddrive is dying? I also notice for the past week that my NOD32 has been abending. Can this be a software issue and not XP or my harddrive?

Hi I am trying to recover some data from a laptop HDD - I already have a caddy but when I remove the HDD from the laptop the connectors are different - (Not SATA V IDE) - it is an IDE but it has different shaped pins to what my caddy will accept ?

Any Ideas what type of caddy I would need to buy - to be able to access this data

A:Dell Latitude D600 pins on HDD

You need a caddy/adapter that includes a 2.5" IDE (laptop) connector.Yours probably only has 3.5 (desktop)
Some have connectors for all hard drive types - IDE,SATA 2.5,3.5

A little less than a year ago I got ripped off on a refurbished Dell Latitude D600. I traded in my pretty much brand new LG 19'' widescreen LCD which was about $200. And my HP Slimline with all the extra stuff included like a burner, laser lightscribe, multi memory card reader, ect...it cost me around $500. The PC was about a year old. Well I traded those things in for this laptop AND paid $300 cash. My girlfriend said not to do it, but the I've known the guy for years. I thought okay well he knows more about computers than I do...considering he has his own computer business. So I did it. Initially the laptop came with Linux and shortly after I had it replaced with Windows XP. Within the first month my hard drive failed and they made me pay about $80 to replace it. They then told me they were not able to pull any data from it. Some how something happened and the screen had to be replaced so they replaced it with a screen that doesn't even fit! It is too big for the laptop so it doesn't close and obviously that keeps it from being able to hibernate or anything-correct? Well they told me it was only cosmetic, that I would never have any problems. Wrong. The left side snapped-not just the hinge-some freakin part under that strip that covers the power button and volume. A guy told me the other day that part can't even be fixed without replacing the casing! On top of alllll of that....

The other day I noticed my battery was critical, but the ac adapt... Read more

Hi Everyone! I thought I would trying posting a question before blowing more money on used computers! I bought this cool little Dell D600 that may have been over priced for $475.00 that has no internal wireless or CD writer! It's a P4 1.6 with 512 Memory and a 30 Gig Hard Drive that had XP Pro with Office 2007 and Adobe Pro with a great McAfree Virus scan program. It was working great until the small hard drive filled up and started that clicking sound before a hard drive crashes. I don't know if I blew it by filling the drive up or if it was a bad drive. This laptop was suppose to be refurbished too.

Anyways, having had buyers remorse over a used computer that no longer works after a few days, and knowing I could have bought a Compaq AMD Athlon Dual Core for $75.00 more do you guys think it's worth fixing my Dell? The only reason I bought this Dell is because I have a Dell now and wanted XP, not Vista. The Compaq Dual Core has Vista and I don't really care for Compaq. So do you guys think its worth fixing this Dell or do you think I should see if I can get the Compaq with Vista. Are Compaq's still that bad? Is Vista really that bad? Or do you think its worth fixing this Dell even though it would cost as much as a new Compaq Athlon Dual Core even though I don't care for Compaqs and may be a stripped down Compaq. Sounds dumb but anything would help.

Hi guys I've got a Dell D600 laptop just finished reinstalling all the software, drivers etc. come accross a bit of a problem, if I install the video driver (ati mobility 9000)
then the laptop will only output video to an external monitor. It boots up windows splash screen etc on the laptops screen but then as soon as windows kicks in the screen goes black and it switches to the VGA port on the laptop.

However If i then go into safe mode and uninstall the driver the laptop will then boot as normal.

The laptop used to belong to an office and was mostly sat in a docking station could this be a factor?

Ive tried FN + F8 and its not doing anything other than making a black line on the screen, any ideas ?

try entering the bios setup by pressing f2 during the boot post screen.
there is an option to set the default video output (something like onboard / docking - depends on the model).

I hope that someone will be able to help me with a BIOS password for a Dell D600.
The service tag is JGY741J-595B.
The HDD lock (of which I know the password) says #*****3MZ319-595B.

Story: I took the laptop over from my company when all computers were replaced by a newly hired service provider (IBM). The previous IT service provider had put in the password and left. Obviously these guys cannot be traced anymore to get the password or a bill for this particular laptop of a few years old (if existing, guess they bought them in one big order). So Dell does not help.

In fact it is not such a big problem, just annoying. Obviously I know the HDD password, deleted the old windows, ran FDISK to remove the DOS partition, and installed Linux Ubuntu from CD. The annoying thing is that I cannot change the date/time (is blocked).

Thanks if someone can help out.

I just bought two used dell latitude d600 laptops. The hard drives were formatted by the previous owner but he supplied the original XP SP2 OS and gave me a link to download the drivers from Dell Support. I downloaded the drivers using the service tag to ensure the latest drivers were installed. I uploaded the OS and drivers without any problems on both computers. I have a wireless cable modem that has a desktop connected via either net cable and it works fine. When I connect the D600 to the cable, I can access the internet as expected. However, when I try to connect wireless, the laptops are unable to renew the IP address so I have "little to no connectivity". I have read through a few of the threads about this subject and tried all the recommendations I could find without any luck. It sees the wireless connection but just wont renew the IP address. I've tried rebooting the modem by cutting power, I've tried the winsock reset, IPconfig /release and IPconfig /renew, Ive ensured the radio is enabled. Ive even reloaded the OS and drivers (including NSS driver) to no avail. The things I notice that are odd is when I go to START>RUN>inetwiz> the internet conncetion wizard pops up BUT only gives me two choices (connect using phone line and connect using LAN). Shouldnt it have an option to connect using broadband? When I do the ipconfig /renew it cannot renew and says that "no operation can be performed on Local Area Connectin while it has its media... A:dell latitude d600 cant renew ip address

hey zeus. that sounds like a pickle of a problem. first off, always use LAN unless you are on a dial-up connection. it's the same as broadband. broadband wasn't introduced until later with windows vista (at least as far as I know). second off have you tried moving closer to router? might be a weak signal or interference from something like a cordless phone or radio. also if you live near train tracks, you might be getting interference from the trains wireless signals to the train station. theres lots of interference that a friend of mine gets from his router whenever a train goes by.

EDITED ADD-IN: also i know you have tried everything under the sun but are you using windows' built-in wireless network control software or are you using the wireless card's software? a lot of times the issue can be a simple software conflict. try disabling or removing the wireless card's software (not the drivers, just the software). then reboot and just use windows' built-in wireless control software and see if that resolves the issue if not, might be a bad wireless card. but don't take my word for it.

Ok.so recently the computer has been working fine until yesterday.

First when it logged me on, no desktop shows up.so i ran taskmanager and closed explorer.exe and ran it again and it worked fine. But today, while i was using it, it crashed with a blue screen. I couldnt read what the whole thing said because my screen is cracked on the top middle section. But it mentioned somthing with physical memory being dumped. Recently i added a 1gb usb as virtual ram to speed up my computer a bit too. I couldn't read it so i figured if i turned the laptop off and rebooted it up it will be ok. So i realized that the usb got bent and maybe came off the computer. So i turned on the computer and it started up. It showed the dell logo and the bios being booted. But it just pauses when it starts. Nothing happens. it doent load. It's just stuck there and all i can do is turn it off.

Now what? I've had this computer since 2006 and I don't remember it getting this hot until just the last several months.

I have a Dell Latitude D600. It can run on a 65W PA-12 (model HP-OQ065B83) or PA-10 (model PA-1900-02D, don't know wattage) family of Dell adapters. Both models have input of 100-240v 50-60hz, output of 19.5v. PA-12 outputs 3.34A. PA-10 outputs 4.62A.

I normally hook the laptop to the PA-12 adapter. About 2-3 weeks ago, I noticed that the icon which shows if I am on battery, AC, or AC and charging, kept flickering between AC and battery power. Finally, it stopped charging the battery in addition to not powering the laptop. I figured it was a problem with the AC adapter. Luckily, I have another PA-12 at home. So, I started using it. Everything worked for a while. Then, the 2nd PA-12 adapter started to act the same way as the first one. I have a docking station which is hooked up to a PA-10 adapter. So, I took the PA-10 and used that to run my laptop. Again this worked for a while and then the same problem. So far, 2 PA-12s and 1 PA-10 had stopped working. Then, I took the docking station (luckily it is small), connected the PA-10 to it, and docked the laptop. Everything worked. But soon after, I started getting a message that the laptop is docked, but the AC Adapter type is not recognized, and to undock the laptop or use another adapter for the docking station. I took the PA-10 and hooked it back to the laptop and removed the battery. If I play/move the adapter's plug on the laptop, sometimes the PA-10 will work. Hi thomas15, welcome to the forums.

There have been reports that this error can be caused by SATA motherboard drivers. If you can get into the BIOS (usually Del or F1 on startup) you should be able to disable IDE Emulation. This has worked in some cases & is worth a try.

Since I've now recently been ensnared in this problem of Dell computers which suddenly and inexplicably no longer seem to be capable of charging the laptop battery - although the AC adaptor still appears to be fully functional in terms of powering the laptop, I thought I would attempt to post the definitive thread on this issue, in an attempt to identify a solution.

I have a probably 5+ year old Dell Latitude D600 laptop, purchased used, and running Windows XP Professional without any problems for the past 3-4 years. As an electronics engineer, I have no problem in diagnosing and repairing minor eletrical problems, to include laptop computers.

About 3 days ago during a reboot, I got the message saying that "Warning: An unknown AC power adapter has been detected, > preventing optimal system performance. Strike the F3 key (before the F1> or F2 key) if you do not want to see power warning messages again.". Not knowing what to make of that in terms of the implications, I hit F3. Only a day or so later, I noticed that one of my two laptop batteries had drained to zero and appeared to not be charging correctly. I checked my two laptop batteries using the built-in test button, and both showed OK, although one was fully discharged. So, the batteries are OK.

In checking the AC adaptor using a voltmeter, I checked the output, and the output was right up to spec with the output right at 19.5V. I examined the laptop AC connector port and it appeared to be both ... Read more

A:Dell Latitude D600 - AC Not Charging Battery

This can happen when you run a battery right down to 0%. Once there, it may never come back. I had a C600 battery do this to me. I fully discharged it, and it never took a charge again

I hv a Dell Latitude D600 with faulty thermal sensor that show constant 85celcius even just boot and the air that blown out were not even warm. The fan were always at fullspeed. It throttle down to the lowest speed(500mhz).

I did remove the heatsink n clean all dust

I did replace the thermal paste

i replace another processor to confirm that is not a faulty processor's thermal sensor

I tried to change power setting to 'Always On' and is still the same

I tried to overclock it using NHC but its still slow

Anyway that i can disable the temp throttle down?
I dont care if that overheat my laptop as if i have to use a laptop with 500mhz i rather try to cure it.
Btw this is an unused anymore,i just wanna try to fix/modify to make it fullspeed again.

I've got a Dell Latitude D600 which I acquired just in the past year, which is running Windows XP Professional. Earlier this year I was lucky enough to have to go on a business trip to Hawaii, and given the duration of the flight - I invested in a second laptop battery. While on the trip, when the first battery began to run low, I wondered whether it was possible to "hot swap" out the old for the fresh battery. After saving all my work that was in progress, I swapped out the batteries as quickly as possible - and the system remained on somehow. I did this probably 3-4 times over the course of the trip, all with consistent success.

On a more recent trip though I tried it, and got the exact opposite result - with the laptop obviously losing all power during the 2-3 second transfer. What's going on there now? Any speculation on what the problem is. In the absence of factual information, all I can do is speculate that on the earlier trip the laptop had somehow gone into hibernate or some other standby mode, and the teeny, tiny onboard energy cell that maintains the clock/calendar and other settings was able to briefly sustain the O/S during the battery swap. Any other theories out there. I've searched online for more information, but all I get is lots of ardent statements that this "hot swapping" is unequivocally impossible - but unless the laptop was somehow energized just by virtue of my electrical personality, these folks are just plain wro... A:Solved: Hot Swapping Batteries - Dell Latitude D600

Okay, although a few folks from some other parallel bulletin boards have gently urged against trying this practice of hot-swapping the laptop batteries, apparently it is both possible - and usually successful, if you just use a little care.

The trick is to ensure that the Hibernate mode is enabled on your laptop and to ensure that the laptop has fully entered the Hibernate mode. Then you can swap out a depleted battery for a fresh one, and the on-board power source will hold the O/S in a powered on state for at least some period of time (a few seconds?), but long enough to get another battery in place - unless you've got twelve fingers and it takes you five minutes, I guess.

I am having the following problems with my keyboard: space bar, back, arrow keys, numbers, letter - you press it once and then it just won't type it a second time until you wait for some time and then go at it again; cannot strike any key twice or more in a row (for example if I try to type "kibble", the second b won't show up)

I thought it may be the keyboard that was the problem so I purchased a new replacement, installed it and the problems still weren't fixed!

Anybody know what the actual problem may be??

I updated the BIOS on my D600 to the latest version A16, last released 2005. Is a BIOS from the D630 released 2008 usable? They seem extremely similar.

A:Dell Latitude d630 BIOS usable on D600?

unless they are the same MB, I would seriously doubt that the BIOS are compatible. Also, are the bios not working on your current mobo? If they are working, there is no need to update.

Hi all!
Sorry for starting a new thread on a common problem...
Been into a strange situation lately...

*short version* Met very nice a girl recently and have been dating her for some weeks. She messed up her laptop couple a days ago by changing the master password and now she canīt remember what is was! (Is she really in love maybe?? ;-) )

I said: - I'll fix it for you, honey! No problem!

I tried to send Mr Rustam_ a private mess and later on an email asking for help, but I didnīt got any response...?! Did I do something wrong???

I had to get back to her and admit that I couldnīt help her out :-( , so she went with shame to her companys IT-guys and they should contact Dell for a master password.

Guess what?? Dell wonīt help them! There are some issues with the purchase order or something! She has lot of stuff on that laptop that she's been working on lately and is really upset about it!

Please! Is there anyone here at this forum that could generate a new Dell latitude D600 master password??

I recently replaced the 20GB, 4200 rpm Hitachi hard drive in my six year-old Dell Latitude D600 with a 160GB, 5400 rpm Western Digital Scorpio Blue drive. I noticed immediately that it was running much hotter than the old drive – to a point at which I couldn’t comfortably rest my palm on the system. I downloaded several utilities to read the SMART chip data, and they all returned temperatures (each utility returning the same value) of 120-125 degrees. I bought a cooling stand, which only brought it down to around 115. I contacted Western Digital tech support; they informed me this was not normal operating temperature, and sent me a recertified drive as a replacement. I installed it, and had the same result. I contacted them again, and the fellow with whom I was working then tried to backpedal – I hadn’t given him all of the info, I had to expect it to run hotter than a 4200 rpm drive, etc. I ended up returning the recertified drive to them and keeping the first one.

I then reinstalled my original 20GB drive, installed a couple of the utilities, and began getting temperature readings of 130-135 degrees! I knew by touch that it couldn’t be that hot; also, when the WD drives are installed, the variable speed cooling fan runs constantly at high speed, whereas when the 20GB Hitachi is installed, it rarely does. I have to conclude that the SMART chips are inherently inaccurate or that the Hitachi drive is simply better insulated (which I find hard to believe).

Hello,My daughter has a Dell Latitude D600 laptop. When she is trying to watch some .mkv or .avi HD videos about 2 to 10 gb in size the video cuts out and will not play without interruption. She uses the VLC player to watch them. She either plays from external usb hard drive or on the C drive. Some of the SD videos seam to play fine. Is it because of her video card or processor is out dated? If so is there setting or other player that will help when watching these videos?
