Packard Bell IMEDIA A3317 Modifications

Q: Packard Bell IMEDIA A3317 Modifications

Hi - I'm new here so please be kind.

I have just bought a Packard Bell IMEDIA A3317 - 3G, triple Phenom core, graphics & sound integrated in motherboard, 320G HD, Vista Home basic. No driver discs included, but 2 created from within Vista for a) Vista re-install and b) Apps Drivers

I need to do ASP programming, so tried loading Win 2000 Professional (SP4) onto a new 320G HD. Sadly, the only screen resolution that works is 640/480 . I obviously need win2000 Pro drivers - since this is a standard package computer, one would imagine that they would be available as a block somewhere, but no joy in finding them.

The screen resolution hinders (prevents) setup of internet access, so I can't access Driver Robot over the net (driver robot needs to work on the machine with the problem)

There is a PCI-E slot, but am not sure if that would be a solution.

This must be a problem others have faced somewhere (or am I the only one!!!!! ) Any ideas on where to get a package of drivers? or what else I could do?

Thanks in advance

P.S. I know it isn't the best of machines, but my needs are very simple - just a little ASP development and writing letters.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have an old Packard Bell imedia 1502 pc which I ma trying to get the data off the harddrive. The harddrive works but the pc will not power up as the on/off switch cables have been coroded (I beleive my friends dog had something to do with that.

There are two parts to this question

1 I have removed the harddrive and installed it as a slave in my own pc and can read the files on it, trouble is there appears to be a large number missing and there is no administrator folder under documents and settings which is where I beleive the data I am after should be. I have tried to boot my pc with this drive as the master with no luck.

Is the admin data etc hidden when a drive is installed as a slave?

2 Does any one know the pin connections for the nive pin front panel connector on a packard bell 1502, I was going to try and force the pc to boot by hardwiring these pins long enough to get the data off?

Hi there,
I currently have a Packard Bell imedia S3720 and I want to upgrade my computer power. I understand that as the imedia is a compact computer with a small motherboard I will need to purchase a larger casing. Basically what i want to do is 'slowly' upgrade my computer. If you could inform me of the easiest and most cost effective way of doing this that would be great. I need information about the types of processors, cases, motherboards etc that i will need to purchase. I am currently running windows 7 on my computer. Is there also a way to transfer my current operating system to my new 'updated' computer as I go? Thanks in advance,

Hi there,

I popped around to a friend's the other week and it appears he is having problems with his Packard Bell Imedia computer. I'm not sure of the exact model but it is definately a Packard Bell Imedia desktop.

The problem is that when the computer boots up, the PC speaker constantly beeps like a siren "on, off, on, off", particularly when the processor seems to be working hard, such as opening applications or loading startup programs. I've checked around inside and found that there isn't a problem with the RAM since I disconnected one of the sticks and moved them around and it was still beeping so my only suspicion is that the processor is getting too hot since the thermal paste must be wearing down now (the computer is roughly 3-4 years old).

However, another problem is that I cannot gain access to the BIOS screen (so I can temporarily switch off the PC Speaker) since it has a password lock, something which my friend didn't know anything about and is obviously something which Packard Bell have put in place to stop users "fiddling" with the BIOS settings. I've tried googling for many different passwords and none of them seem to have worked so please could someone also advise on this?

My friend doesn't really want to spend out a lot of money on it since it would obviously be much more worthwhile to start again but if I can get it to stop beeping I think that would be something!

A:Packard Bell Imedia - Constant Beep

My first thought was that the keyboard has a stuck key. Another possibility may be an alarm, like too high temp, but if you cannot get into Setup, it would be hard to check that. If you have another k/b, it might be worth while, if only to eliminate it as a possible cause.

Just used a new copy of XP Home to reinstall XP on this machine, and all has gone well except for the sound. This machine has Sigmatel onboard audio but device manager says no drivers are installed for MultiMedia Audio Controller, and control panel Sounds says nothing is installed. Tried uninstalling and rebooting but nada. The serial # of this PC is 2667077049.Can find nothing at all regarding this model on the Packard Bell site. Hi rowal5555 This machine has Sigmatel onboard audioIf you're sure about that, then you might want to look at these two instead. One is for a via chipset, the other for an SiS chipset. This is one of those circumstances were you might be better off running a HW utility like everest or sandra for further ID.I'll leave the two links anyways.http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/drivers/234/234389.htmhttp://www.soundcard-drivers.com/drivers/214/214312.htm

Hi anyone out there know what sound driver the 5137 uses? My son in law recently purchased a second hand one and replaced the operating system with windows xp home. Before the reformat he had sound now he has no sound. There is a yellow exclamation mark over the multimedia sound controller icon in the device manager. He says he has been unable to pin down the exact driver he needs. So far he has tried a variety of drivers with no success. Unfortunately I live too far away to experiment. Think If we can identify the proper sound driver we'll get somewhere , any ideas?

Hi, i see there are several cases of audio missing from Pc's and there doesn't seem to be a quick fix. A friend of mine has a Packard Bell BV IMEDIA 2215 PB80135701 32 bit running Vista Home Premium. He wanted to connect the PC to a TV and put a lead with a scart plug on one side into the TV and a jack plug on the other end into the black socket on the back of the PC. The connection wasn't successful but he noticed after there was a red x instead of the speaker icon and a message "No Audio Output Device Is Installed" I dont know if the lead damaged the drivers in any way. In Device manager there are no warning asterisks but some things including speaker stated that there were no drivers. I tried update and was told the drivers are the newest. I have tried driver sites that scan the pc and will update drivers but they want paying. Is there a scan facility in the Packard Bell site that will scan and tell me what drivers i am missing. I have returned the PC back to factory settings via All Programs and i would have thought the drivers would work but they dont. Thanks for any advice

I have a Packard Bell iMedia quad core, I switched it off last night working fine, but this morning, when I press the power button, the red light comes on, all the fans start then after about 5 seconds it just switched off..

Im taking it that it is not the power supply as it starts up, and I have tried removing the ram one module at a time, and that makes no difference... what else could it be?? as it is not even booting to bios, could it be the motherboard??

Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved...

Hello everybody,

All the installation process was OK, but there is no sound.
I tried downloading and installing the Realtek HD Audio Codec R2.55 but it doesn't work.
I also tried installing the driver from the Packard Bell Download Center but I can't find my brother's model there.

I appreciate any help.

According to what you listed you have a "VIA High Definition Audio Controller". Doing a google search I can come up with XP drivers but no Win 7. I didn't check out every link in the google search so do a google search for VIA High Definition Audio Controller and see if you can find a Vista/Win 7 driver.

Hi, I have just cleaned a whole load of dust from my PB computer, removing the processor fan carefully to clean it, and replaced just as conscientiously. After that, I upgraded my 2 x DDR2 512mb memory to 2 x DDR2 2gb, then slid the side back on and powered up. It then threw out two beeps then one continuous blare until I turned it off.

I switched back to the original RAM, but the same thing happens. Is this to do with the possibility that this machine can only take a certain amount of RAM? Or could I have maybe damaged something in the computer whilst cleaning (with canned air), despite my extreme care? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi all

I have a PB iMedia 2215 pc that will NOT power up !
I have read alot of other posts ref this prob and come to the conclusion PB pcs stink haha
however I have also tried all manner of tests for the PSU and come to the result that the PSU must be ok because when I disconnected the CPU power lead then switched on the PC remained on !!!!!!!! would this be correct ?
The amount of data etc on the PC is very important and I need to find a quick fix for this prob and as cheap as possible as I am looking to upgrade to another PC soon but have not backed up the data stored on the PB yet

My question is also should I replace the Motherboard or just the CPU etc ??????????
The CPU fan is running fine but when I try to power up with the CPU power jack plugged into MB then the pc switches off after 5 seconds !
any help & advice would be much appreciated

Hey guys,
My son's PB Imedia 1408 pc stopped working last week after he thought he had a trojan on his system after downloading it with some music. To cut a long story short, he tried to get rid of it by using Spyware Doctor at which point his system froze and then shut down. Then he called for Dad's help ( dont they always?) once the horse had bolted!
Anyway, now when you press the power on switch, the power switch just flashes orange and the HDD light stays on. There is a small beeping noise as the pc pulses but not the usual 'beep' you normally get. Inside the PC, the fans are working but you can hear it struggle to get going as it is pulsing. The PC can not boot.
I took out the Hard drive and checked it in my system and it appears good. I have since formatted it as whatever trojan was on there seemed to be pretty nasty. I have checked the CPU in my system and that works ok as does the RAM. My only thought is that the motherboard is fried? Are there viruses out there that can do that? or is it something more innocuous that i am missing?

Thanks for your time.

Virus cannot hurt Hardware (well indirectly yes, like a "crash")

Hi All

I'm trying to fix a Packard Bell iMedia 1539 for my friend. She said that she was browsing the internet one day and the screen suddenly went black, with just a white mouse cursor and some weird blue lines to the right of the screen.

I tried to boot to last known good configuration but it restarted and won't even load to the black screen anymore.

I can't get it to boot at all now. It loads the Packard Bell Recovery Console but then blue screens. It either comes up with:

I can't boot from a disc, as it just keeps trying to start the recovery console and then going in circles. I can't get to the screen to start in safe mode or last known configuration.

Any ideas about what it might be. Initially, before i'd looked at it, i thought it might be a faulty hard drive but i'm not so sure now.

Hi everyone,

I tried to install Ubuntu Linux on my Packard Bell iMedia X2415 desktop PC, but I messed up somewhere along the line and now I basically want to reinstall Vista Home Premium from the master discs I was sent from the last time I had a problem. When I use the disc it asks me to choose which drivers I want to install from a list of drivers for each piece of hardware, last time I did this I was given the drivers over the phone but as the computer is now out of warranty I don't think they will be able do this. I was wondering if anyone here was able to provide me with a full driver list?

Hello rosebryan,
As far as i can see, PB does not have any support for this model any more.
If you install Vista, you may have a problem getting drivers for it. But as there are third party drivers available for most apps, you may be lucky.
The only way to find out is to install it and see, but to be honest, i would not hold out much hope.
Does PB have a forum ?, you may find somebody with the same model who has had more luck with this.
Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

I recently turned on my old PB Legend (after it was off for many, many months) and got a "battery dead" notice. Hi newbie here

A:Packard bell 525 HELP

It would be surpising that the packard Bell would even have recognised the Fujitsi RD, let alone loaded anything from it.

Assuming it did (which I find doubtful), and that you have removed the Fujitsu CD, the recovery files should still be on a hidden partition on the hard drive.

However the system crashing may be due to a hardware failure and totally unrelated to the recovery disk?

The "black screen" probably indicates that the computer simply is not booting more than the incorrect recovery process, which likely never actually ran anyway.

Can you be more descriptive of "the system crashed"?

Someone gave my neice an old Packard Bell computer and she was wondering if I could find some information about this computer for her. I have run around in circles looking and haven't gotten very far.
I know it is a dinosaur and it is bottom of the line but I'm just trying to get any info I can for her.
What I have so far is:
PB 2970
1.2 GB HD
133 MHz Intel Pentium processor
82439hx 430hx chipset

I can't seem to find any info on the IBM MOBO or the processor. "Fresh Diagnose" says, pentium(r) processor, level 5 rev. 2.12, 133 mhz, processor level 5.

Where can I find out what processors are compatible with it? And what kind of RAM is compatible?
I know it's probably going to cost too much to mess with but I told her I would check on it. So I figured if I could find a cheap processor like on ebay and maybe a stick or 2 of ram fairly cheap I would fix it up a little for her. Her and her husband don't have a lot of money, she's just 21 and they have 2 kids and one on the way, So any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. If no help with this computer, maybe you might have an idea where I could get a computer tower for about $100.

A:Help For Old Packard Bell?

I can tell you without even looking it up, you're looking at either paying a ridiculous amount for any RAM you DO find for that (IF you can find any; it's probably either FastPage or EDO), or you'll stumble across a boatload of it for free... either way, with an original Pentium 133, you'll be lucky if the system will handle a total of 128MB.

I did find this page that may be useful - I didn't see any matching numbers for the info you posted above, but you may be able to correlate something from it with something else in the system: http://www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/lakes/8774/syschart.html

Frankly, that machine isn't worth spending the time on, let alone any money. I don't know where you live, but around here, brand-new AMD Semperon or Intel Celeron systems, complete with 512MB RAM, 80GB or better hard drive, and DVD writer, can be had for <$300 (check this pair, for example - under CDN$250: http://a-power.com/product.php?productid=2515&cat=458&page=1 and http://a-power.com/product.php?productid=2513&cat=457&page=1).

That may be a bit out of your or her budget, but it gives you a bargaining chip if you go looking for something used (someone wanting more than $100 for a P3 system, for example, is probably smoking crack).

Now I can't install Windows 98 because, even when CD-Rom support is selected on start up, my computer is "not ready to read drive E". A few people have told me I may need to install the drivers for my particular CD-Rom. I don't have the diskette and have no idea where to obtain the drivers. Any input that anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My kids PC took a lightning hit. It was an old Packard Bell Multimedia 850. When I turn it on the hard drive comes on but there is no picture. I assumed it was a bad video card, but when I opened it there wasn't a video card just an adapter that's hooked to the motherboard. I've tried like hell to get this thing off but to no avail.

Anyone have any suggestions or any ideas on where I can an online manual for this computer?

Hi everyone,

I have been asked to look at an old Packard Bell, it is a Pentium 166Mhz running! Win95. I would be grateful for any help that might get it going.
The problem is, on boot up there is nothing on the screen except a flashing cursor.
I have booted from a boot disk, but the floppy does not light on POST, and doesn't seem to work. Tried a new one with new cable, still nothing, although if the cable is reversed (the wrong way round) the floppy light stays on all the time, like it would do.
Lights flash on keyboard and CD-ROM on boot up and there is noise from the hard drive as if it is going to boot, but no light for hard drive activity.
I have changed RAM, booted with only CPU, video card, and RAM, still no change.
Have checked all the jumpers and everything is in it's right place, except one jumper floating in the case.

Any help gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have a Packard Bell which is about 4-5 years old. I am not sure how to get into the case. There are no obvious entry points or screws. On the front it only says Packard Bell and Multimedia. No other names. I appreciate any inputs. Thank you. LS

Hi can any computer whizz out there help - if so it would be much appreciated! - does anyone have the answer to what happened to my pc? I bought a packard bell platinum exactly a year ago and have had nothing but problems (they had to change the motherboard on it - six months ago?) until finally the ultimate! - I left it on for approximately two hours - connected to the internet - had yahoo messenger and aol messenger on and launch.com thats it! Came back and the monitor smelled really strange and the whole monitor screen was scrambled and all the icons were huge. The resolution on the monitor had switched itself to 256 colors by 640 x 480 when I left the machine it was at its normal settings - 16 bit 124 x768 - why did it do this - no one can give me an answer? Shut down immed. and turned it back on - called packard bell for help and they couldn't help - they couldn't come up with a reason? - suggested reinstalling the device adaptor - that didn't solve the problem - the icons are still showing up askew - to the left side of the monitor and the desktop icons are to the extreme left and right of the screen and the start up text in dos is very big - has been suggested that the monitor is now damaged or possibly the display card - probably the monitor - can someone tell me what caused this and what do I do now - if I try in on a different pc will it ruin that persons computer - or do I now need to get a new monitor - I guess that would be the smart thing to do hu... It really sounds like your monitor bit the dust. Try a differnet monitor on your machine or try your monitor on another.

It could be the video card but I would suspect the monitor if you smelled burning electronics.

PackardBell Ipower X8640, Dual Intel Core2 Quad Q6600, Dual Nvidia GeForce 9600GS, Asus MotherBoard, Dual 500Gb Hard-drive

Hello all,

I bought a Packard Bell Ipower X8640 about a year and a half ago and its been problematic from the day I set it up. At first it was just problems with start up which I could live with as you just had to restart but it started developing problems with gaming which I cannot live with as I play a lot of games.

The problem started slow and has developed into a full blown malfunction. It started when I was playing Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, the whole screen would go black and it would say No Signal but the looped noise in the background (the crowd, music etc.) would continue but sounds such as commentators and the players would stop. I have no idea at all what is causing this and it has started to migrate to other games such as Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and FarCry2. It only happens when playing certain aspects though for instance it has never happened in the Multiplayer game nor in the campaign of the Single Player however it does it in the Special Operations missions which is a shame as I enjoy these missions.

At first I thought it might just be my PC and as it was having start up problems I assumed it was something to do with this but I have replaced the faulty motherboard and the start up issues have disappeared but the game crash issues have not. What makes me believe it is an issue with Packard Bell is my dad recently bought o... Read more

I have questions and need help. First let me explain a bit.

I am a co-founder of a non-profit. We got a lucky break and someone donated a Packard Bell desktop (without manuals etc.) to us. We are happy to have the PC and plan to use it for most if not all of our non-profit activities. Letters, posters and updating our web site.

I used a UK web site and they (as I expected, the back indicates Sacramento CA) did not recognize the Serial Number. I am in the USA as you might guess and am asking for assistance.

The serial number is c6cm29c53j. It is a desktop tower. The video is Samsung (likely not part of the original package). I want to add memory if I can (PNY has a sale locally) but I don't know how to find out if I have SSM or DDM memory. I understand some things about PCs but not near enough.

I would appreciate any help you can give and understand if you cannot. Thank you for your time.

Hiya and welcome, Larry

I've split your post off and created a new thread for you, so you'll get more responses

I buy all my memory from here:

The link above is the US site.

On the front page, choose Packard Bell from the drop down menu. Then, you need to look for the product line. This should be on the front of the actual pc. Then, choose the model.

For instance, I chose A series, then E570 from the next option. This then brings you to a page that explains which memory you can use, as each RAM stick can work fror different systems.

Check to make sure rnaap.exe isn't already open by pressing control alt delete. If not and as long as you have the drivers, remove the modem from device manager, reboot, let windows reinstall.
