thumb drive busted??

Q: thumb drive busted??

Hi,
My thumb drive isn't working anymore.... it won't show up in either my home or offive PC (ME and XP respectively)... it just shows up in the system tray but no drive letter is assigned to it. Its green LED lights up.
Can I recover the data or reformat it?
Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: thumb drive busted??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

ok, here's the deal...I got two drives on my pc. One of them has an apparently "illegal" copy of windows. My second drive has a 100% legal copy of windows. I am aware of how to get your serial number through your registry and how to change it. (microsoft has their own page) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328874/

However, here's the problem: the drive with the good copy of windows will not boot up. I can browse the drive just fine, but the sucker just wont load up with my pc.

Any tips/ suggestions? Can I view the other hard drive's registry without booting from it? ect.

Hi. I've got a computer with XP. It will load up to the desktop with the background showing but no folders/start menu shows up. I have a feeling that there is something wrong with the harddrive, but is there anyway to tell for sure that it's that and not soemthing else like the mobo or a cable before I pay to replace it?

Just so you know, I can get my system to boot all the way with an ubuntu live CD, and I'm trying to save some of my files, but it keep freezing up for no reason.

Gawd I'm an idiot. In a rush I plugged in my external drive casing with the cord of my laptop. This means I gave it more juice than it wanted and I think I burned it out. It never worked, of course, when I did that. Now when I use the right cord it doesn't even turn on. There is a green light on the transformer. It is solid till I connect it to the casing. Then it fades a bit and starts to blink. I think it is blinking "You're an idiot" in morse code...

First Question: Could I just have to reset it somehow? (I'd be looking at the instructions but they are at home and I am not.)

I have checked the manual online and there are no reset instructions. I think I will have to buy a new casing...please let it be just a new casing....

The Enclosure is a Nex Star CX External 3.5" USB 2,0 Interface.

Second Questionlease tell me that the external casing took the hit not the harddrive inside...

Umm Ya if you preface this answer with "Idiot" I'd totally understand...

500 Gig WD Mybook
HD inside is 5000AAKS

Basically now it wont show the file structure and information. It recognizes the drive, USB interface etc,. and sometimes the partition appears and then disapears.

I've tried multiple computers, OS's, enclosures.. nada. they can see it but no dice. I have a recovery program but it needs to see the actual partition for more then a few seconds.

To get it professionally recovered is $600.. I am sure I can find a way, its so close, I just want my pictures.

edit: Now it keeps labelling it unknown/unreadable in disk management..

I have two internal HDs two CD drives, one ext. HD and Windows has assigned drive letters to all and all have been stable over the years the very weird thing , and I can't figure out why, is that for my USB thumb drive - which I always plug into the same USB port it changes letters after an extended period - say about 8 months, it will go from "G" to "I" and then back. It is bothersome only because I use the "Send To" command for many files. is there a way to stabilize this or is it just another XP annoyance I must put up with.
thanks

right click - then choose "change drive letter" a box will appear with the current letter
choose a new letter and click ok then its all done same letter every time

Stinger.exe will run from a flash drive an will seek out and find most of the more recent worms and viruses. You can find it here:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

I would think for any full fledged av program you could put the exe. file on the flash drive and then install it on most any computer. Such programs as Avast, Antivir, and AVG should work in that manner.

The laptop is not connected to the internet at either location
I have tried it on different Laptops same result there dosen't seem any logical reason for this as other usb drives work ok
Many thanks for any help that can be given.

A:usb thumb drive

When you eject the USB flash drive do you click the Safely Remove Icon before pulling it out? If you don't, it will have a hard time connecting next time you put it in.
If the USB Flash Drive is not recognized when you put it in, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager are there any devices with a Yellow Flag or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers is there an Unknown Device? If so, right click it and Uninstall it, then remove the Flash Drive and restart your computer. Put the Flash drive into a different USB port. If you don't want to restart, put the USB into a different USB port and in the Device Manager, Right click Any device and choose Scan For Hardware Changes. You should get New Hardware Found.

Tried it in our laptop and drive was indicated in "Computer" (using 7). I'd try copying the files it won't play over to the local drive. Then you can find out if it is a problem with your drive, files, or if you are just using to much RAM on other things- netbooks typically can't run tons of apps at once since they usually only come with 1-2GB

HELP!!! I just bought a new PNY 8gb thumb drive for my Dell E6400 laptop running XP. It worked great for the first few tries. Today, every time I plug it in the USB port I keep getting "Cannot find HOnEq.Exe"
I don't know why it's not auto-playing, and allowing me to read the files I put on the thumb drive earlier. But, I can go to My Computer, and right click on the thumbdrive to view the contents. But why did it stop automatically recognize the thumbdrive and why is that warning constantly popping up. There is no virus..I scanned that. All devices appear to be working. Should I return the thumb drive and get a different brand/model? Or is there a simple fix? Also, I checked to update the driver but it said I already had the latest driver. Did something get corrupted? HELP!!!

A:PNY 8gb Thumb Drive

The most likely situation is that the thumb drive got a virus which was later removed by your antivirus or someone else's. In that case there will still be a file (probably a hidden and system file) called "Autorun.inf". If you delete that file the drive will be back to normal.

In case you don't know, to show hidden and system files go to tools>Folder options>view, check show hidden files and folders and uncheck hide protected Opperating system files.

Hi, I am completely new to the Bios/setup, and I am trying to boot up from a thumb drive using an Gigabyte E-350 (usb 2.0 v) motherboard.

I've held the delete key and gone to the advanced section and set the first bootable device to USB-HDD. I have put the thumb drive into one of the usb sockets, but no luck so far. Just keep getting "Loading Operating System ..."

Thanks in advance

A:How do I start up from a Usb thumb drive?

Write the latest official ISO with SP1 for your licensed version to stick using UltraISO Software To Create Bootable USB Flash Drive which always works when others don't.

If it wont' boot, change HD to boot first in BIOS, trigger stick using one-time BIOS Boot menu key given on first screen.

If you have an EFI mobo (check in BIOS) you'll need to install in UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums with an UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows .

If you don't want UEFI after watching this video to understand it better: Technical Note: UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS - YouTube then you can Bypass UEFI to Install WIn7

Someone tried to access their thumb drive but was denied. Dialogue box said something about needing to be logged in as admininstrator to access thumb drive. Not sure what this is about. I was able to use my computer (admin) and access the thumb drive and print his files but still not sure why accessing a password protected drive would not be possible unless logged in as admin.

Right-click My Computer and select Manage.

Click Disk Management on the left, and it should show in the right pane. If so, right-click on it and assign a letter.

Greetings and salutations!

I'm working on an HP Pavilion ze5400 laptop.

The CD-ROM does not work.

It's got some nasty viruses on it which limit what I can use it for...those constitute another story which has already been adressed.

I need to run a repair installation of XP.

I've tried using the program PeToUSB and when I try to boot from the thumb-drive it just tells me "Disk Error. Press any key to reboot." Pressing any key just brings the message about again with no actual reboot.

Thoughts? Ideas? Does anyone have any insight into how one might copy an XP installation disc to a USB drive for installation?

If worse comes to absolute worse...I understand one of the problems trying to install XP from a USB drive is that it resets the usb device and loses the boot-source. Would an external CD-ROM work? I don't have one but I'm not against acquiring one if need be.

I wasn't sure where to put this question.

I have an 8GB SanDisk U3 Cruzer thumb drive. I have always been able to use it on both my Mac and my PC, however after formatting it for a startup disk to install Mavericks on my Mac then reformatting it on the Mac to Fat32 so it should be able to be read on both, the PC does not see it any longer. I can write to and read it on my Mac. I tried to go into Disk Management on my PC, but when I click to format it, it gives the following message:

"An unexpected error has occurred. Check the System Event Log for more information on the error. Close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer.

I looked at Event Viewer, which I presume is the same as System Event Log, but don't know what I'm looking at there.

This has happened on both my PC with OS Vista and my laptop with OS Windows 7.

Would appreciate any suggestions on a way to fix this.
