Um.. I'm really confused now about what's wrong with my laptop. It was working beyond fine when I first got it years ago. Way better than our top of the line PC! And then about a year ago almost now I got pop ups saying I had virus/trojans/etc. And after that it started acting really weird. I called tech support since I had that whole norton antivirus crap. They were completely USELESS. They said my problem was um.. malware or something? And that the only way for them to fix it was to send it in to be removed.. for an additional $100. So why buy anti-virus protection if I have to pay again? I told them to bite me.
I then had help from a friend who knew tons about computers and told me all this good virus protection stuff. I downloaded it and it seemed better but still acting odd. The new problem that developed was the whole system just getting incredibly hot and then shutting down. After it shut down I had to wait at least 2-3 hours before I could restart it for like 10 minutes before it shut down again. I got a cooling pad and that really worked wonders. I could use it again.. But now the pad is broken and it just keeps shutting down.
Im confused because I saw on some pages here people talking about BIOs and batteries and what not. I notice that my fan never even turns on on my laptop.. it just gets super burning hot and shuts down. Usually by the screen/power button area in the upper left hand corner on the keyboard part.. not screen part.
I have a Compaq Presario V2000 with windows XP Professional HP.
Do I need to take it to a repair shop? Anything I can do to fix it? Granted.. it shuts down super fast now so I don't have time to like do that whole crazy BIOs floppy thing.. I dont even have a floppy drive.. on a laptop.. thats crazy. So any help would be GREATLY appreciated.. I love my laptop like my baby..
And in the simplest terms possible, detailed if possible.. I'm not a computer genius.. I'm sorry. But I'll love you forever if you help!!
(Also I wasn't sure where to post this so if its wrong I'm sorry.. It seems like a software/hardware problem.. but i don't know)
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
If your fan doesn't run, it's most probably a hardware failure. Send the laptop to Compaq for repairs.Read other 1 answers
NOTE: THIS IS A COPY OF MY POST ON THE COMPAQ FORUM...getting desperate.
Hi, i bought a 6150b from a company auction. Everything worked perfect for the longest time. Then last week i went to go turn it on, and all it does is run the CPU fan for a couple seconds, flash the AC LED about 7 - 8 times, and while thats flashing the power and hard drive LED’s stay solidly lit. Then it completely turns off. This all lasts about 3 seconds at the most. That’s what happens when on battery power.
When on AC power, the same thing happens, except it continues doing the cycle over and over again until I unplug it.
I think it might have something to do with the LCD monitor, since it does not even show a slight flicker at all. No color change like it would from when turned off to a black back lit screen when turning on….simply nothing.
I opened her up (no warranty anyways) and checked all the connections for the keyboard, monitor, DVD drive etc....also reseated them as well, with no luck.
Pulled the both RAM modules and reseated them as well, nothing.
Pulled the battery as well, no change. Still cycles the same over and over again while on AC
There are no audible errors codes (real nice HP...), and im lost at this point.
Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I think instead of just pulling and replacing the CMOS battery you might purchase a new one and install it. Proceed from there. If you get a screen and it's still has a problem try a new PSU. Jazz
Hi! My computer is Compaq Presario CQ40. It's 8 years old and can only be used when directly plugged in to the electric socket. It's been working fine until last night when it suddenly shut off. At first I thought that maybe the plug was accidentally pulled out from the source but when I tried to plug it in again, the light indicator beside the power supply in the unit itself won't turn on. I tried to unplug and plug the charger adapter but nothing happened. May I know what could have possibly happened? Is there a way for me to check the possibile problem? I know that my laptop is very old, but I still find it very useful and I wish to continue to use it in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.Thank you!
If you are lucky the AC adapter has just died. To understand more, no light comes on the adapter brick when you plug it in the wall and no light comes on next to the AC jack when you plug into the laptop? Where do you live? On an 8 year old laptop you can find a useable "3rd party" charger for a few dollars.Read other 1 answers

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)
If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.
However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.
i dont know anything about computers so i will need a detailed explanation and i need to know how to fix it!! it just stays on the compaq screen
Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?
Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.
Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get
the Advanced Options.
Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

Well where to begin.... this issue started last week where I was just watching a tv show online and my computer just randomly shut off, I turned it back on and it worked again for about 15 minutes and than shut off again, from there it would only turn on long enough to barely post..... anyways my first guess was maybe my psu was dying or what not, so I took pulled one of my GPUs out and we turned on again. Computer powered on and stayed on for maybe ten minutes... and I'm back to where I started again. I gave my computer a while to sit and I turned it on its side and I started to mess with it again computer stayed on for hours no issues I was testing to see if I was having over heating issues, CPU NB and MB all no where no near over heating, again I tried to stress my GPUs and over all system running Battle field 3 maxed..... no issues, shut my computer down thought I was good to go since I had used it for the day with no issues.... But again the next day same issue, computer powered down after a while of simple tasks.... Anyways I spent the next few days looking up possible solutions.... and I did the following I re-seated every piece of hardware other than my CPU, looked for possible shorts and created less clutter in my system. Driving to work today I figured the only thing I've really changed as of lately in my setup is adding my SSD about a month and a half ago. I never had this problem prior to that so that will be what I try when I get home, however Diablo 3 ... Read moreRead other answers
I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.
So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart
My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?
Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.
Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.
ok I hace a compaq that is all messed up. lets see one day the monitor would not work after a storm. Bought another, For a while the screen would be blue but change back to normal. The pc also would have a hard time starting up after it was in idle. We would do a hard start and for a while that worked. Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. It runs on XP media center it has a micro ATX form factor motherboard it is also an AMD 64 Anthlon. ram is 256 mb 1Rx16 pc 4200 ddr2 533 mhz. With all that said can I just replace the motherboard and reinstall the reinstallation disks and be up and running? ( if it could only be so easy) What about the cpu. i know many questions here thanks for patients. Please help me. Tina
does your system have agp or pciex (or even pci) slot free? Is the graphics on board? It sounds like a graphics card problem, even if it is onboard. I'd try a replacement card (even if it's just a pci card) and see what happens...

I have the best luck with computers ever. My brother wanted me to format his oldschool compaq presario 5000 computer so I formatted with the win XP setup disk, when I went to restart to start installing windows after the format it takes me to a blank screen that reads:
"Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"
I have booted with floppy and fdisk, fdisk /mbr, formatted about a million times using FAT and NTFS file systems, I have deleted all partitions, did everythinig I can think of.
Does anyone have any idea of how I might solve this and install windows? I know the HDD isn't shot because I can put it in my other comp and actually do a full win install, but when I place it back in the compaq, it brings me to the same error screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

ok the dilemma is simple ok i bought this new laptop for the wife then it came with a built in webcam truth is i don't want that webcam so i bought another webcam that i am trying to use on msn but the laptop states found new hardware but doesn't install my webcam is usb ported it says m style on the cam the only thing it uses my wife states that she can access the cam thru the control panel but not in msn why is this occuring if someone could get to me asap would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance
You may need to disable the original webcam
You can disable it by going to: Device Manager (Start->Run-> Devmgmt.msc)
Then locating your Webcam (that you don't want to use) and then right click on it and select disable
Then go back to MSN and use the settings to set up the new webcam
I recently bought this machine and at first it worked fine. Last time i used it no probs and even shut it off correctly. The other day I went to turn it on and nothing. The led light that says that it is pluged in is on but now it is not charging the battery. I can get it to come on enough to hear that it is running but it is not booting and the screen remains black. I contacted that previous owner but she said she never had any problems with it. I want to see if it can be fixed, cheeply if possible, befor I do anything else. Thanks for the help.
Sounds like your gonna have to get you hands dirty and take the cover off. Remove the cover and start pulling out parts. ;-)
The best way to troubleshoot a machine is to only boot with the bare requirements.
CPU, RAM, VIDEO CARD...over course power supply...
I'd take out all other parts and PCI card, remove all hard drive cables and floppy cables. Take note which way the RED LINE goes when you put it back together...
If you have MOVED the computer recently, IE transported the computer in the back of your car truck, you might want to try and RESEAT the video card, and RAM. Shipping a computer in the mail and it arriving DOA at the customer more than likely points to a video card that needs to be reseated. Lucky for us, most new motherboard come with AGP slot lock thank goodness...
Hello! I am attempting to change a 80mm fan in my Compaq computer. The fan I want to change is, I believe, called the CPU fan. It has a lever next to it and 4 screws holding it down. My question is this: Do I have to move the lever on the side of the fan in order to pull the fan up and proceed to remove the screws or do I just remove the 4 screws? Also, how do I remove the screws considering the awkward position they are in? (I've been working on trying to remove the screws; however, it is difficult to maneuver the screwdriver into the top of the screws to remove them. This is because part of the fan case is above the screws making it necessary to place the screwdriver sideways in order to remove the screws.) Thank you for your response.Read other answers

Hey everyone I am having the same problem again as I was having before with my Compaq Presario 5000. It seems to just freeze up when I am on it or not. Sometimes I try to move the mouse to get back into Windows from the screen saver and it does nothing. At all! And sometimes in the middle of surfing the web and listening to music it just freezes up again and I have to hit the power button just to get it back up and running. Can anyone help out with this? I was asked to run MemTest before but I have no idea how to do this, so could someone help out? Also, since I am not a complete newbie, but darn close when it comes to the whole hardware side of computing, how can I tell what is causing interference with what when it comes to the hardware I am running and wether or not the latest drivers are installed? Thanks again and hope to get this resolved quickly.

Hello. A buddy of mine has an old Compaq Presario 7470 that he is putting a new mobo in. Apparently, the old case has color-coded front panel wires. He has separated the wires and now he does not know which ones go where (in terms of going to reset button, power button, Etc). We have looked everywhere on the net for some sort of schematic for the Compaq case to figure out the color-coded wires. However, not even Compaq site has any info. Also, to note, the wires apparently terminate on some sort of small printed board before going to the lights and buttons. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate your help.
The front panel wireing is one problem with trying to put a non Compaq board in a Compaq case . . the power supply may be another . . a lot of the OEM's use a proprietary Power supply with non standard connectors.
You might be able to Google Compaq Front Panel connectors to see if someone has worked it out ( i know of one guy who did for Dell )
He will almost certainly be better off buying a new case for the new board, and using whatever hardware he can with the new system.

Need a maintenance manual. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Google Compaq for a contact number - ask them to send you a manual..
My brother recently bought a new HP desktop PC so he wants to sell his old laptop (Compaq Presario 700, Windows XP Home Edition) and we both agreed we should do a full restore to completely wipe the hard drive clean to it's original slate and we have the original Compaq ''QuickRestore'' discs and for whatever reason, they're not working. There is three CD's and not a single scratch or mark on any of them. I've tried to run all three on the laptop and the only thing that happens is that the folder containing the discs files on it is what pops up and no actual setup occurs like it says on the little piece of paper that comes with the CD's.
This is what it says....
First, if your Presario Notebook is attached to a Port Replicator (QuikDock), you must turn the power to the computer off, disconnect it from the QuikDock, and plug it into an external power socket. Disconnect any printer cables or other peripherals from the computer before using Quick Restore.
1. Insert the Quick Restore CD (bootable disk) in the CD drive, and press Enter. A WARNING message appears advising that you are attempting to totally reformat your hard drive. Confirm by following the next step.
2. Press 1 and then Enter to continue. The Power Quest Quick Restore Wizard starts copying and uncompressing data to the local hard drive. This process takes approximately 7-10 minutes.
This warning message never appears and none of this ever happens. Does anyone know why... Read more

I have a compaq presario 7470 in my possession. It used to work, but not for some reason it refuses to. I just bought a power supply for it and it still doesnt work. i have a question...a while ago my Presario battery died -- it wouldn't charge or discharge, the laptop could only work on the AC, but the indicator showed the correct % of the charge... I bought a new battery and it worked fine for a week, but I decided to reinstall Windows XP, and from then on, it's been a rollercoaster ride for me (( First, it worked fine, but the laptop started to freeze every 20 minutes. I followed the COmpaq's people advice and updated BIOS for some battery controller thing and updated the video driver. From then on, the problems with my new battery just started to overwhelm me First, the battery wouldn't charge when the laptop was ON. Then somehow it did charge. I decided to calibrate it, and now it doesnt want to charge -- on or off. The red light indicating the battery is flashing -- as it's not charging, and the indicator says "0" % of course.
Does anyone have any ideas?? Please? This only started after I reinstalled the Windows, so I am sure it's not hardware or the battery, everything worked just fine ((
Please help me!!!! Thanks... I'm desperate....

I have this old Compaq and I used to be able to burn CD's until the day I stuck in my little portable device one would use to store pictures and things..I forget what its called, but you can insert it into a USB port then add or remove pics or anything and remove it and put it back around your neck and go. Anyway after doing this one day I go to burn a Cd and my computer is telling me I have these new drives called E,F,G, & H, which it has now bundled into something called a USB mass storage device. it no longer recognizes that i have a working burner.. it does not even recognize that I have a drive D. All it is reading is those removable device drives that came along with my junk drive. The 'Safely Remove Hardware" option has been coming up and ive used it to disable these other drives..but its still not working..How can I fix this?
Right-Click on My Computer, select Manage. In the left pane there should be a listing for Disk Management - click that.
Now, in the right pane, scroll down and see if your CD is listed, but has no drive letter. If so, right click on the grey part and choose "assign letter". I would use Z: (no chance of a USB device trying to grab that letter).
A friend has a Presario X1300. It has a small problem. The power button only works once in a while (perhaps 1 in 20 presses). I thought perhaps it was a cold solder joint but even after touching up the button's pads its still has the problem.
It could be a bad switch, it looked like the switch had previously been replaced (although he hasn't had it serviced except to put in a new hard drive about a month before the switch went bad).
I found a post that indicated that someone found schematics for the motherboard and I was hoping that someone here would be able to point me in the right direction. I didn't find them on google. I'm going to replace the switch first, but if that doesn't work I have to assume there's some other problem that will need debugged.
I hate to see such a nice laptop go to waste because of a stupid power on problem.
I have found the service manual online. Its great, but has no schematics.
Thanks for any ideas you can offer.

Anyway here is my problem that I am stumped with ....
Reformated a compaq presario 2.1 gig/128ram/40gighd/ with onboard video and sound.
Everything is up and running fine except i cant seem to get the sound to work, says that it is installed and working properly but still doesnt work.
Installed different speakers ..no joy....went to compaq downloaded new software drivers and installed...no joy. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
I almost hate to ask if the volume control is set to mute so we'll pass on that one.
If there's a headset socket on the front of one of the CD's, can you hear anything through that?

I got mine on Oct 26,2004. So far i am very pleased with it. Not into gaming so I can't answer that question. I got $300 US rebates off the price.which brought the cost down .
Yes the software comes on the HD. There is a 'System Recovery " disk that comes with it but I'm not sure exactlly what that has on it..It does restore the orginal files that were on the computer when it came from the factory so it seems that should be all that is necessary to keep the computer running incase of problems.
