Compaq Presario shutting down repeatedly

Q: Compaq Presario shutting down repeatedly

Um.. I'm really confused now about what's wrong with my laptop. It was working beyond fine when I first got it years ago. Way better than our top of the line PC! And then about a year ago almost now I got pop ups saying I had virus/trojans/etc. And after that it started acting really weird. I called tech support since I had that whole norton antivirus crap. They were completely USELESS. They said my problem was um.. malware or something? And that the only way for them to fix it was to send it in to be removed.. for an additional $100. So why buy anti-virus protection if I have to pay again? I told them to bite me.

I then had help from a friend who knew tons about computers and told me all this good virus protection stuff. I downloaded it and it seemed better but still acting odd. The new problem that developed was the whole system just getting incredibly hot and then shutting down. After it shut down I had to wait at least 2-3 hours before I could restart it for like 10 minutes before it shut down again. I got a cooling pad and that really worked wonders. I could use it again.. But now the pad is broken and it just keeps shutting down.

Im confused because I saw on some pages here people talking about BIOs and batteries and what not. I notice that my fan never even turns on on my laptop.. it just gets super burning hot and shuts down. Usually by the screen/power button area in the upper left hand corner on the keyboard part.. not screen part.

I have a Compaq Presario V2000 with windows XP Professional HP.

Do I need to take it to a repair shop? Anything I can do to fix it? Granted.. it shuts down super fast now so I don't have time to like do that whole crazy BIOs floppy thing.. I dont even have a floppy drive.. on a laptop.. thats crazy. So any help would be GREATLY appreciated.. I love my laptop like my baby..

And in the simplest terms possible, detailed if possible.. I'm not a computer genius.. I'm sorry. But I'll love you forever if you help!!

(Also I wasn't sure where to post this so if its wrong I'm sorry.. It seems like a software/hardware problem.. but i don't know)

Preferred Solution: Compaq Presario shutting down repeatedly

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If your fan doesn't run, it's most probably a hardware failure. Send the laptop to Compaq for repairs.

Hi, i bought a 6150b from a company auction. Everything worked perfect for the longest time. Then last week i went to go turn it on, and all it does is run the CPU fan for a couple seconds, flash the AC LED about 7 - 8 times, and while thats flashing the power and hard drive LED’s stay solidly lit. Then it completely turns off. This all lasts about 3 seconds at the most. That’s what happens when on battery power.

When on AC power, the same thing happens, except it continues doing the cycle over and over again until I unplug it.

I think it might have something to do with the LCD monitor, since it does not even show a slight flicker at all. No color change like it would from when turned off to a black back lit screen when turning on….simply nothing.

I opened her up (no warranty anyways) and checked all the connections for the keyboard, monitor, DVD drive etc....also reseated them as well, with no luck.

Pulled the both RAM modules and reseated them as well, nothing.

Pulled the battery as well, no change. Still cycles the same over and over again while on AC

There are no audible errors codes (real nice HP...), and im lost at this point.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario 6150b wont boot - no BIOS screen - powers on and off repeatedly

I think instead of just pulling and replacing the CMOS battery you might purchase a new one and install it. Proceed from there. If you get a screen and it's still has a problem try a new PSU. Jazz

Hi! My computer is Compaq Presario CQ40. It's 8 years old and can only be used when directly plugged in to the electric socket. It's been working fine until last night when it suddenly shut off. At first I thought that maybe the plug was accidentally pulled out from the source but when I tried to plug it in again, the light indicator beside the power supply in the unit itself won't turn on. I tried to unplug and plug the charger adapter but nothing happened. May I know what could have possibly happened? Is there a way for me to check the possibile problem? I know that my laptop is very old, but I still find it very useful and I wish to continue to use it in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.Thank you!

A:Unexpected shutting off - Compaq Presario CQ40

If you are lucky the AC adapter has just died. To understand more, no light comes on the adapter brick when you plug it in the wall and no light comes on next to the AC jack when you plug into the laptop? Where do you live? On an 8 year old laptop you can find a useable "3rd party" charger for a few dollars.

Hi. I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 that is about a year old. These days I have been experiencing problems with my laptop. The problem is that the top hand corner gets hot, and then my laptop automatically shuts down itself. There is plenty of battery on my laptop, and it also happens, while my charger is plugged into it. This mainly happens when I am at school, where  I do not bring my notebook fan cooler. I can basically do nothing, because every 30 minutes it will automatically shut down itself. It even happens when I am in "Battery save" mode. This is starting to irrate me, because I have only had this laptop for about a year, and my warranty just expired so there isn't much I could do. I have read about this being a problem to a lot of people... I am wondering if it has something to do with my battery, because it is really bad. It only lasts for about 30 minutes from 100% to 10%. I do not know what the problem is, because I have no expertise in laptops. I hope  you can help me.

A:Compaq Presario CQ60, overheating and automatically shutting...

You should post your issue on the laptop forum.   If you bought your laptop using a credit card then check with your credit card company about a possible warranty extension.  Some credit card companies do extend the manufacturer's warranty by 1 year on electronics when the device is purchased. It's possible that there is too much dust inside the PC.

A:Compaq Presario SR1810NX Not Getting Past Compaq Logo Screen

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

Well where to begin.... this issue started last week where I was just watching a tv show online and my computer just randomly shut off, I turned it back on and it worked again for about 15 minutes and than shut off again, from there it would only turn on long enough to barely post..... anyways my first guess was maybe my psu was dying or what not, so I took pulled one of my GPUs out and we turned on again. Computer powered on and stayed on for maybe ten minutes... and I'm back to where I started again. I gave my computer a while to sit and I turned it on its side and I started to mess with it again computer stayed on for hours no issues I was testing to see if I was having over heating issues, CPU NB and MB all no where no near over heating, again I tried to stress my GPUs and over all system running Battle field 3 maxed..... no issues, shut my computer down thought I was good to go since I had used it for the day with no issues.... But again the next day same issue, computer powered down after a while of simple tasks.... Anyways I spent the next few days looking up possible solutions.... and I did the following I re-seated every piece of hardware other than my CPU, looked for possible shorts and created less clutter in my system. Driving to work today I figured the only thing I've really changed as of lately in my setup is adding my SSD about a month and a half ago. I never had this problem prior to that so that will be what I try when I get home, however Diablo 3 ... Read more

My laptop imspiron 7520 se  is shutting down repeatedly on its own showing an error  message every time. Mostly it's showing error messages like driver irql not less or equal, system service exception, reference by pointer. It is running Windows 10..At first I thought it was due to drivers compatibility issues which many users of windows 10 have. I reset the pc but it was of no use. Finally I reinstalled windows 7 home premium which the laptop originally had, before upgrading to windows 10 but was surprised to see the similar problems coming again. I ran Dell diagnostics both in windows 10 and 7 and except for dvd drive, all other components passed test. Can anybody help?

I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?

A:Compaq Presario 600 ??

Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.

Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.

I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.

So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart

My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

ok I hace a compaq that is all messed up. lets see one day the monitor would not work after a storm. Bought another, For a while the screen would be blue but change back to normal. The pc also would have a hard time starting up after it was in idle. We would do a hard start and for a while that worked. Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. It runs on XP media center it has a micro ATX form factor motherboard it is also an AMD 64 Anthlon. ram is 256 mb 1Rx16 pc 4200 ddr2 533 mhz. If any here has an HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario PC or Notebook (current models), they will notice that the fan kicks in when needed. The fan doesn't really annoy me as much on my Compaq laptop, but on my HP desktop it is really annoying and loud. I think it forgot that it was only supposed to come on when needed because it is now on almost all the time. Can someone explain to me how this fan works in more detail and how I can possibly adjust when it comes on or at least the fan speed, SOMETHING!!! Thanx in advance.

A:HP/Compaq Pavilion/Presario Fan

If the fan kicks in more then it used to it might mean that the computer needs a cleaning. These fans are temperature controlled and only kick in when a sensor detects the temperature to be at a certain level. Sone fans need to be on at all times - like the one on the CPU - but it may be possible to control it speed with software or BIOS settings.

Speedfan comes to mind, do a google search for it. It will list the motherboard temps and allow fan speed adjustment if the board supports it. If you have a case fan you can control its speed, as for the CPU fan - thats best left on a full speed.

First, open up the case and see if it needs a cleaning. You can also replace stock fans with quieter ones if they are too loud or wearing out.

Hello all,

My 92-year-old grandfather -- who lives on a little island off the coast of Maine -- has emailed me regarding a problem that he is having with his ten-year old computer. If anyone out there would be kind enough to offer some advice on how to fix it, it would be greatly appreciated. There are no computer shops on the island, but my grandfather has plenty of tools and has worked extensively with radios throughout his life, so with some direction I have little doubt that he can make the repair.

This is an unconventional post, to be sure, and I don't really know anything about his computer ... but I think he has done a reasonable job describing the issue:

Hi Chris!
I have a severe computer trouble that I brought on myself.
First I will describe the computer and it's programs.
It is a Compaq, Presario 1200,
at least 10 yrs old.
Along the front edge of the top it has three indicator lights at the
left of center and three on the right.

The ones on the left are operating lights of which one shows when
the charger is in and the left most one shows when the computer is
started up by the button which is in front of the screen.
The one between these two shows the operating conditions, I believe,
as it usually flickers in concert with whatever is going on.
The three on the right each has a "locked padlock" symbol.
For programs it has Windows 98, Juno V.4, Intel Create and Share
and some other good things.
Everything has been working good.

You should have gotten a Restore CD with your laptop. That is the OS and all specific drivers, apps and Compaq features that were on the system. Anytime you install a "fresh" OS, you will lose all that stuff. With Compaq, I think this is not all bad. If you bought the laptop with something other that Win2K, then you are most likely SOL and on your own.

A:compaq presario 1200

Sounds like your gonna have to get you hands dirty and take the cover off. Remove the cover and start pulling out parts. ;-)

The best way to troubleshoot a machine is to only boot with the bare requirements.

CPU, RAM, VIDEO CARD...over course power supply...

I'd take out all other parts and PCI card, remove all hard drive cables and floppy cables. Take note which way the RED LINE goes when you put it back together...

If you have MOVED the computer recently, IE transported the computer in the back of your car truck, you might want to try and RESEAT the video card, and RAM. Shipping a computer in the mail and it arriving DOA at the customer more than likely points to a video card that needs to be reseated. Lucky for us, most new motherboard come with AGP slot lock thank goodness...

Hi there @stevekra, May the Forums be with you!  It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel.  I understand that you are looking for help with the a printer for your older model computer.  I am happy to help with this. I am assuming the printer connection type you are looking for is an old parallel or Centronics connection.  That connection type is no longer being used in newer printers, and as far as I know has not been for many years, having been replaced by USB, Ethernet and Wireless connections. Any printer with a Centronics connector is going to about as old as the computer you are working with.   Now it is possible you can get a printer with a USB connection to work, but depending on what operating system you have installed and the capabilities of your USB ports this may also be an issue. Your system is likely using USB 1.x ports, whereas the current standard is 2.x or 3.x. Your hardware and/or OS may not be able to recognize newer devices, and the drivers avaialbe for those devices may be for Windows 8.x or 10.  I am not saying it is impossible, but that you are going to have some forseeable challenges getting devices to work. You may find that you will need to make a wholesale upgrade to the system to work with newer devices, and it may be better to look at a newer system. Just my two cents. Please let me know whether that works for you, a... I have the best luck with computers ever. My brother wanted me to format his oldschool compaq presario 5000 computer so I formatted with the win XP setup disk, when I went to restart to start installing windows after the format it takes me to a blank screen that reads:
"Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"

I have booted with floppy and fdisk, fdisk /mbr, formatted about a million times using FAT and NTFS file systems, I have deleted all partitions, did everythinig I can think of.

Does anyone have any idea of how I might solve this and install windows? I know the HDD isn't shot because I can put it in my other comp and actually do a full win install, but when I place it back in the compaq, it brings me to the same error screen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

I almost hate to ask if the volume control is set to mute so we'll pass on that one.

If there's a headset socket on the front of one of the CD's, can you hear anything through that?

We have an old 2001 compaq 5020 computer. The last screen you see when you shut it down is , it is now safe to turn off your computer and then you have to shut it down manually. How can we change this to turn off automatically. We are running Windows XP.

Hello bilmac1. Probably, when Windows was installed, it failed to recongize the BIOS as ACPI compatible. Or simply, APM is not enabled: check under "Power Options Properties" if the tab "APM" exists; if so, check the option "Enable Advanced Power Management Support" (if it's checked, uncheck it, weird as it sounds).

I have a compaq presario. The bios are poop. Does anyone know if there is a way to update the bios with areal manufacturer? Or am I stuck with compaq's bios? It would be really nice if there was a way to find out who makes the bios for them and update it. Any info would be great. Thank you in advance!

A:Compaq Presario Bios

You need to get the BIOS from Compaq. While the board maybe MADE by another company, who knows what slight changes to the specs were made.

When you do your next upgrade, build your own and get a real BIOS.

Like working on a NEW Dell PC, almost NO Options, no Temp monitors nothing.. junk... its a DELL!

I have had a Compaq Presario 1500 laptop for about 2 years now, and I am quite un-satisfied when it comes to multi-tasking several applications at the same time. Sometimes it is so slow that I cannot minimize a full-screen application to read up on something on the net. I currently only have 256 megs of ram, but I read on the internet that tihs model could have up to 1 gigabyte. This is great, but therein lies my question. The laptop has two ram slots, one of which has been empty since i got the computer. Could I get a gig of ram and still keep the 256y meg stick as an added boost? or is the 1 gig the maximum for both slots?

A:Compaq Presario RAM upgrade

Well if your laptop supports a maximum of 1gb then that means 512mb per RAM slot.
Here are a few links on Newegg which is the Maximum Memory you could get for your Laptop. This is if you are in USA

Hello! I am attempting to change a 80mm fan in my Compaq computer. The fan I want to change is, I believe, called the CPU fan. It has a lever next to it and 4 screws holding it down. My question is this: Do I have to move the lever on the side of the fan in order to pull the fan up and proceed to remove the screws or do I just remove the 4 screws?  Also, how do I remove the screws considering the awkward position they are in? (I've been working on trying to remove the screws; however, it is difficult to maneuver the screwdriver into the top of the screws to remove them. This is because part of the fan case is above the screws making it necessary to place the screwdriver sideways in order to remove the screws.) Thank you for your response.

Backlight is out no doubt, screen look fine with flash light held up to it? Not much you can do for that, doubtful you can replace that unless you are pretty seriously technical.

I'm trying to reformat my mom's old Compaq Presario SR1303WM. I've set it to boot from the cd-rom and I almost had it. But after deleting the partitions and starting a clean install it would only load the programs to 20%. After that it locked up and wouldn't do anything. I had to shut down and restart.

Now, it won't load from anything. Of course the old OS is gone so it won't start up on the hard drive and it won't boot from the cd. It just keeps going to a black screen with "Error Loading Operating System". Can someone please help me. I know they can't get a new computer and I just want to get a new install on this one to speed it up for them. They had a ton of malware and such on it.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Since HP now owns Compaq, I am not sure what kind of cds you have in order to attempt recovery.
Per HP Support

HP computers that ship with Microsoft Windows XP do not come with recovery CDs. Instead, they use a hidden space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery information. The use of a separate partition provides a convenient process that eliminates the use of recovery discs that may be lost or scratched. A system recovery from the hard drive may not be possible in some circumstances. Your computer may contain Recovery Disc Creation software. Recovery discs for Windows XP are available from HP for a minimal cost. See Obtaining Recovery Discs for ordering information.Click to expand...

What kind of disk are you using to attempt restore, and are you using HP's support page?
Are you still set to boot from CD and to attempt to do so FIRST?
Is your BIOS properly identifying your hard drive?
What happens if you unplug the data cable from the hd before trying to boot to cd?
Do you have the "Recovery Console" option at some point during boot?

Hey everyone I am having the same problem again as I was having before with my Compaq Presario 5000. It seems to just freeze up when I am on it or not. Sometimes I try to move the mouse to get back into Windows from the screen saver and it does nothing. At all! And sometimes in the middle of surfing the web and listening to music it just freezes up again and I have to hit the power button just to get it back up and running. Can anyone help out with this? I was asked to run MemTest before but I have no idea how to do this, so could someone help out? Also, since I am not a complete newbie, but darn close when it comes to the whole hardware side of computing, how can I tell what is causing interference with what when it comes to the hardware I am running and wether or not the latest drivers are installed? Thanks again and hope to get this resolved quickly.

Hello-have prev worked with Compaq tech support 3 sessions but still have same problem with video. Until recently, I could watch MSNBC video OK. Have never been able to watch CNN video. No new software has been added to computer recently. Now, when I click to see video on MSNBC, it acts like it's going to open, then get x in corner and says done in taskbar. Then screen comes up telling me to install free software and a link to windows media player 10. I do this, it loads as it should, and I try to install as normal. At end of installation, it gives me error message from Windows Media Technologies. It says"this version of WMT is incompatible with this version of windows. For more info view the info at the Microsoft website". Have tried this several times. Have gone thru several scenarios with compaq and tried many different remedies. Have tried to uninstall all WMP entirely and reinstall. Many restarts. Disc popup blocker, antivirus, firwall, defrag, run programs that compaq had me try. Same prob now. Have the 8 system recovery disc's from compaq if all else fails but don't want to do that if it can be corrected any other way.

Hi All

I realise this is possibly not the right room for this, but here goes.

Compaq presario V5000 laptop started giving consistant BSOD on start up, no boot (even safemode possible)

*** STOP 0x000000c2 (0x00000043, 0xDFFE8000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Ran linux did memory and hard drive check, seems ok. Have got all my data off and trying to recover the computer to a working state, but turns out the Compaq recovery DVDs i made invoke windows XP, this of course brings on the blue screen of im at the end of my tether.

Any suggestions, as I havn't got a scratch startable version of windows (as they don't give away them anymore.)

Thanks in advance.

Please i desperately need help, have got compaq presario 3015us(never buy it) P4/512ram/60 gb h.disk etc etc.... the problem started when i woulds scan norton antivirus, the system would juz freeze, tried it a lotta of times but same prob, then i started gettin error msgs sayin ISAAC.DLL error...then RUNTIME.DLL error.. then i wanted to restore it to a previous date, but there the calender would be stuck at oct and i wanted to restore it to september...

then i tried using the compaq recovery disk, the disk after 2 mins of running, would shut down the computer again, same thing happenned 3-4 times and next time gave some error sayin cant access drive H (dont have drive H) and enter but nothing happenned.... then i got my hard disk formatted but now ot shows "NO DISK SPACE" whereas i have 60gb and same problem of shutting down keeps happenning when the disk runs...pls help....

is it a prob with the motherboard or hard disk or juz something else....pls pls help!!!!

hmmm, when you formatted the hard drive, did you FDisk it prior? When I worked for Gateway tech support, we had a little saying, "if nothing else, then FFR"... which meant FDisk, Format, THEN reinstall OS, in that order. Give that a shot with a windows ME bootdisk. You can find the download at bootdisk.com
