x240, no keyboard, no touchpad, only connected monitor/keyboard works

Q: x240, no keyboard, no touchpad, only connected monitor/keyboard works

I'm running out of ideas so I hope you can help. When I turn on the laptop, I see the lights but nothing else. It's only when I connect it to an external monitor that I see the actual screen. Same with the keyboard - only the attached keyboard works. I updated drivers and bios. There's no damage. This is using Windows 7 and I've had no problems with it. Under display, detecting another screen fails, just gives me the external screen. Touchpad is enabled in settings but doesn't work. Any ideas? The laptop is about 4 years old and out of warranty. No spills or damage.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My x240s keyboard doesnt register in bios meaning i cant access the bios menu without an external usb keyboard - wierdly tho it does work  when booted into windows and linux  to get through grub i have to hammer away randomly on the keyboard until something registers before making a selection - its hit and miss. ive reset bios, unplugged the cmos battery, run the bios diagnostics and cant think of anything else to do. anyone heard of this before as the issue is usually the other way according to google searches.

When I am in the middle of using my keyboard, my screen will go blank.  The laptop does not turnoff, the screen just goes blank.  If I press up by the numbers 4 or 5 or press the T or the R, sometime it will come back on, sometimes it wont.  Can anyone tell me if this could be repairable or would it cost more to fix than replace the computer.  I bought it about 2 1/2  years ago.  It shouldn't be bad already should it?

Hi,
I'm having problems with my All-in-One Keyboard on Windows 8.1(64 bit): it doesn't accept input both from keyboard and touchpad at same time (can't walk in a FPS game while looking with mouse, for example).
Is this a product's limitation or should it work?

Thanks

Hi all this is my first time posting anything anywere, here goes on 9-4-08 I clicked on a link to a program and as usual vista wanted me to approve it so I did, my antivirus program went off with a high threat and I thought it stopped anything from happening however after I removed the bad stuff with the AV program I noticed my computer would crash to blue screen every few minutes or so.
So I quickly became frustrated I tried repeatedly to used the vista cd to restore it but it would crash in the middle of the process. Next I checked the Dell support link on my desk top and it scanned the computer for any hardware or compatability issues and said I needed to install bios update. So I downloaded it ,all was ok at this point , when I began installation it completed about 25% then crashed to blue screen again . Now I am banging my head on desk... well I try to restart computer and I now have nothing at all ,no monitor stays blank,no keyboard, no mouse CD drive runs and flashes and the little #4 light on front of tower stays lit now but no HDD activity .
So I remove my HDD and install it in my sons E521 , we have same computers, and it went back to crashing to bluescreen. So now I experiment with boot sequience and boot from cd first then I just had windows vista install cd in drive and restarted computer, and that seemed to take care of that problem , however when I put my HDD back in "my" computer stall nothing ? ? ?
Now does anyone out there have any ideas ? I am th... Read more

Hi, roadan1971, and welcome to the forums.

It sounds like your BIOS was in the middle of being updated (colloquially called flashed) when it died. You'll need to contact Dell tech support and tell them exactly what happened, and see if they know of a way to restore your computer's BIOS - else you'll have o pay to have it replaced.

Hey,

I am pretty desperate now as I recently got a new Lenovo z500 ideapad laptop, which i think its 9 months old only.

All of the sudden, one day the shift key started to automatically been pressed down.. as if its like its being 'possessed' in simple terms.. and it happened at random times

After much forums, some say hold shift key down for 10 secs or x amount of secs, disable sticky keys, filter keys, bounce keys, or even continue press shift keys continuously etc etc..

Did all those, disabled sticky keys, bounch keys, filter keys and now whenever i on my comp, the shift key will automatically be pressed down, so i have to hold the shift key for like 5-8secs to disable it, than it works fine and no more occurence.

However, a new problem occurs.. now certain keys on the laptop is not working like the right shift key.. when the right shift key is pressed down, none of the letters are being capital or none of the symbols are showing BUT the left shift key does the job..

Than, the left shift key could not caps the letter z, t, y, m, and a few more.. but it works prefectly fine with other keys.. Now i am pretty sure its not a keyboard malfunction because without pressing caps, all the keys are fine but only these certain keys wont be caps when the left shift key is pressed..

So i decided to use an external keyboard and everything works out fine.. right shift key is working, left shift key caps those letters which could not be cap... Read more

A:laptop keyboard does not work but works fine with usb keyboard

The fact that a USB keyboard works fine when your built in one doesn't, proves that it is the keyboard itself (or connectors) that is damaged/defective, otherwise, if it were a software problem, the external keyboard would do the same.

Having an issue with all Dell 7510's and associated docks we've deployed to new users at my employer. The external keyboard won't work at the Bitlocker prompt. These PC's are imaged for Win10.
I've sifted through the BIOS settings and have had no luck getting it to work. One thread I found said to make sure the Post Behavior -> Fast Boot setting is set to Thorough. Verified that is the case.
Note: if I undock and dock the PC the external keyboard will work that 1st time at the bitlocker prompt, but at next reboot it doesn't work.

Hey all, I'm having an issue with my new X1/Thunderbolt setup, and I was hoping I could find some help here. Problem:I'm currently having a problem where my keyboard and mouse are cutting out intermittently. This happens at random for about a second or so at a time. With the mouse it almost feels as if the computer is lagging.. but it's not. With the keyboard it can cut out mid press of a key, and the letter (or it's even happened to me while pasting) will just keep going for a second or two before the keyboard comes back in and sends the signal to release the key. Setup:I have a new X1 Carbon gen5. This is replacing a Macbook Air, which I had hooked up to an Apple Thunderbolt 27" monitor (Model# A1407):https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Thunderbolt_Display(These are both from ~2011) This is a Thunderbolt 1 monitor, so the connector is the same shape as mini-display port. I don't game really, so maybe I'd see some flickers if there were fast refreshes going on, but for my use so far I have not seen any issues. The only issue is the hooked up peripherals (which so far is just the keyboard and mouse). These all still work f... Read more

Hi, I have a ThinkPad X240 with an AOC monitor plugged in via a Mini DV to HDMI cable. When turning the machine on the monitor looks like in the video below and keeps turning off and back on:http://sendvid.com/8gaxbjkm If I turn off the monitor and turn it back on everything is fine. I have tried changing the cables and monitor and get the same result - so must be an issue with the laptop. I am running Ubuntu 18.04 on this - maybe a driver issue? Anyone else had a similar problem?

I already have the issue that when I put my E5570 to sleep and wake it up again that the keyboard and touchpad do not work. So I have disable the sleep options in the BIOS.
Now I run into different issues.Yesterday I booted the laptop and it hang on the DELL logo, After a while it stated that my EFI file would not be correct. Force reboot and it booted straight to Windows.
What's more annoying is the fact that the laptop boot, the DELL logo is shown and then the screens go's black, as if it's not connected. SO it looks like it hangs.BUT an external monitor through HDMI does work and show the windows logon. The keyboard and touchpad also do not work.External mouse and keyboard do work.
So pretty much I got a brick when I do not have external display/keyboard and mouse available.
When I reboot the laptop it works fine again.Am I the only one with this?Loads of issues with the laptop and wondering if I just have a faulty laptop...

A:Latitude E5570 - Black display, no resons to keyboard/touchpad - External display/keyboard/mouse do work

I have been spending a lot of hours in troubleshooting this week.
Diagnostics are 100% ok.
Reinstalled Windows 10 about 15 times.Installing drivers by hands, installing drives trhough the dell update management application. The issues keeps existing.
To sum the them up:- Cold boot (laptop is off) to Windows. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and they work again)- Resume from sleep. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and the work again)
After I got the laptop I installed 32Gb of RAM and an 512Gb Samsung 950Pro PCIE M.2 NVME drive. The drive should be support as Dell states on the product page and in the manual that PCIE with NVME is supported.
"Advanced features, like industry-leading M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIe/NVME solid state drives, provide data transfer speeds up to 4x faster over traditional hard drivers. "
In order to get the drive visible and running on PCIe I had to disable the sata controller in the BIOS.This way the drive is detected in Windows as an PCIe NVME capable drive.
Just to verify if the issues I went back to default with the delivered 256Gb M.2 sata drive and 8Gb RAM.To install Windows I had to turn the Sata controller back on.
Installed the drivers manually updated WIndows and tested. The issues do NOT occur.
Retested by installing the drivers using the Dell Update Application. The issues do NOT occur.
So I figured out that the SATA controller somehow is the guilty part for all the issues.I mean when enabled to ACHI or RAID the sleep and non... Read more

Hi all, I have a Thinkpad x240 that I bought refurbrished in ferbruary. It was working perfectly untill recently I've noticed a problem with a bult-in keyboard. So microphone mute key stopped working and when I press down and hold left Alt key, microphone mute indicator powers on. Also sometimes Fn lock led stays powered on even though Fn lock is disabled. I've noticed this behavior after I've used logitech wireless mouse with usb unified reciever. Is there a way to fix this strange behavior? I've already cleaned contacts on the keyboard connector on the motherboard and cable, but it didn't fix the problem. Also it seems like it is not OS dependet, because it has the same behavior in bios/linux/windows 7 & 10.

Hi! I am experiencing a weird glitch that happens to my laptop keyboard.  Last weekend, I have discovered that only 5 and 6 keys work on the top row number keys of my keyboard. Also, F10, F11, F12, Home key and Delete keys don't work. Other keys are working. I have tried the keys multiple times but the don't register anything on the screen. I have tried booting in my linux system and the problem persists. I have tried multiple reboots, load optimized settings in bios  Upon testing the top number row, I have discovered that pressing 6, 7, and 8 key, simultaneously, registers an "equal sign (=)" on notepad, and 3, 4, and 5 keys registers an F2 equivalent click, which proves that the keys aren't broken.  Yesterday, upon booting up my system, all the keys seem to be perfectly working again.  However, last night (up until now)(out of the blue), the aforementioned keys suddenly didn't work again. Anyone having the same problem? Any solutions, guys? Thank you!

My x240 won't boot at all. The backlight for the keyboard and all the other indication lights (power, caps lock, etc) blink about every second. I've tried: * removing the battery and working from mains power* inserting a pin into the emergency-reset* pressing power button for 30 seconds* frequent pressing of the power button, with battery, without, on mains power, and no power at all. None fix the problem. I suspect that either the SSD, or a memory module, is either damaged or just been shifted in its slot (years back I had an old Sony that wouldn't boot. Re-seating the HDD solved it in that case). Any help appreciated.

Hi, everyone. I would really appreciate any help on this to retain the maximum usage of my X240. The special alternate functions of F1, F2 and F3 keys are not completely functioning. I recently replaced my keyboard recently to a backlit one, only to find out that the alternate special functions of F1, F2 and F3 keys (mute, volume down and volume up) are not working completely. The funny thing is that the indicator lights up when the computer is freshly booted and EVEN DOES WORK for the first few minutes, BUT malfunctions after a few minutes. What's weird is that the NORMAL functions of F1, F2 and F3 keys are STILL WORKING despite the malfunction of the alternate special functions. To illustrate, here's a sample scenario: 0-~2 minutes: computer powers up; desktop is shown. keys function as they should, including special functions of F1, F2 and F3 (mute, volume down, volume up). Keylight indicator in F1 (mute indicator) working. 3 minutes and beyond: standard function of F1, F2 and F3 continues to function, but the special functions DOES NOT work anymore. Keylight indicator in F1 (mute indicator) is not working anymore. This happens everytime I boot. I tried to search forums for solutions, but I haven't found a solution yet. While this does not necessarily ruin the whole typing experience for me, it does cause a slight annoyance, especially with the fact that I cannot change the volume without manually going to the controls myself.  C... Hello Everyone,

My problem started after updating windows 8.1 to windows 10, of course!
First the touchpad just stopped working, for no reason.

My solution was to uninstall the drive and restart the laptop. And from time to time I had to do this proceed. Two weeks ago windows updated, and the touchpad issue's gone. . Unfortunately, another one appeared.

The feature "mousekey", which is turn it on at ease access to use the numeric keys to use them as a mouse, It's turning itself on. And doesn't matter how many times I turn it off, few seconds and it's on again.

I've tried uninstalling the drive, which after windows the last updating was "ELAN".

Then I replaced by the Toshiba drivers, which is "Synaptic", and uninstalled the drives ,the problem is the same. Because of that, I can't use my numeric key, which is annoying!! If anyone can come up with something I will be grateful.

The changes to the MS OS'es and touch screens might bring some advantage for me and my CAD work if using keyboard and, if available, a touchpad(drawing board) in one. I work on a large screen attached to the laptop with a wireless KB.
Has anyone of you used or come across anything like that and could a touch pen be used for drawing(CAD) on it similar to a WACOM board? I could do without a mouse then.
Just wonder..........

Their products just recently stared showing up in my locale so I don't know much about them. Too bad they didn't put up English descriptions and data, don't know what they are capable off. I suppose (by looking at other similar touch-pads) that the are in capacitive technology so pens for smart phones and tablets should work on them. By looks of them, they are smaller than drawing boards and even if they are in highres could be too small and touchy for precise drawing.

It could be Static Electricity build up that can interfere with the touchpad and keyboard. To clear it up, try a hard reset; turn off your laptop and disconnect it from any external power source. Then take out the battery. Next, hold your laptop's power button for about a minute. Then replace the battery and power up.

I notice, in your post, you state it works in safe mode, so this may not be beneficial.

What is the installed operatiing system? You have me at a disadvantage while trying to help you since I don't know the installed operating system. As a temporary workaround, plug in a usb mouse.   You will need to mouse to enter the control panel and enable the touchpad again. There is no disable\enable of touchpad in the BIOS. Were you in the Device Manager when you disabled the touchpad? That is another place where it can be enabled and disabled. For Windows 10Enable or Disable Onscreen Keyboard using SettingsSelect ?Start? > ?Settings?.Choose ?Ease of Access?.Select ?Keyboard?.Set ?On-Screen Keyboard? to ?On? or ?Off? as desired.

First, I had problems with my touchpad. The pc not even recognized it. I unistalled and reinstalled the drivers and it still doesn't work. I don't know if I installed the correct drivers (they don't appear in the device page). And now, my keyboard stops working and it begins to work again. some LED's are still on but I press a button and it doesn't work. I couple of seconds later, it begins to work again.

Hi everyone. I made a mistake on a Toshiba laptop. I turned off the touchpad in Device Settings. Now the touchpad is dead & I don't have a mouse to navigate with. I need to restart the touchpad without the use of any mouse. Is there a way to navigate in Mouse Properties to Device Settings to restart the touchpad?

A:Need to restart touchpad using just keyboard.
