How to move app icon from taskbar to tray

Q: How to move app icon from taskbar to tray

Hi, I'm looking for some way to move icon of any app currently working from the taskbar to tray, like for example Skype (with the new version from Windows Store that feature has been removed) or some other programs that just run in the background doing their thing and I don't need to see their icons but I want to keep them on my screen. All the programs I've found so far work in the same way, they put the app in the tray when I minimize it but I want to keep it visible on my screen yet not on my taskbar - is that possible?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey Guys,

I'm not too sure if this may be possible. I've done a bit of "googling" but the key words always bring up "how to move the taskbar" but that is not what I want....

Basically my monitor has developed a small leak down on the bottom right, nothing major, it can wait until I've saved up to get a nice new one. For now though I can't see my tray notification and more importantly the clock. Is there anyway to move the sytem tray (including the clock) further towards thw middle so that I can see it?

XP has been around for years so I would have thought someone would have come up with a way!

Thanks

A:Move the system tray NOT the taskbar

It's built into the program to always be on the right of the taskbar when horizontal (top or bottom) and the bottom of the taskbar when vertical (left or right side).

What I'd like is for a program that normally appears in the system tray to show in the taskbar at all times it is running so i can easily see it and use the exit functions etc.
Specifically for Steam - (X) minimizes to system tray and hides activity in the task bar. I don't mind if this results in 2 icons showing (1 for an active window and 1 for the process) I know you can do the same from system tray for this particular program, but I just don't have the habit to look there for anything other than system background applications.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional x64 and am comfortable tinkering with registry and system files if needed.

So the questions are:
1/ Can a system tray icon be permanently moved to the taskbar applications area?
2/ If not, can a background process be assigned a taskbar icon when active?
Thanks in advance,
Eric

Made a Revouninstaller shortcut icon and placed it on my desktop. Then renamed the Revouninstaller icon to Revo, and pinned it to the taskbar. The position it took was that of the last icon in the row (far right, just before the System Tray starts). However, when trying to drag/drop into another taskbar position, it jumped right back to its original position. How can i move it to where it want it to reside?

A:Taskbar icon won't move to another position?

Remove it from the taskbar and pin the original .exe icon to the taskbar, and don`t rename it.

I have a Skype icon on the taskbar in Windows 7, and would prefer it to be on the desktop as a shortcut. Could you show me how to put it on the desktop please?

A:Move icon from taskbar to desktop

Go to the folder in which Skype is installed. Find the "Skype.exe", right-click it and hover over "Send To..." then click: "Desktop (Create Shortcut)".

Next on the super-bar (task bar) right-click the Skype icon and press: "Unpin program from taskbar."

When I click an icon on the taskbar, then the corresponding application window is not moved to the front of the screen. The taskbar icon flashes for a few seconds and then remains highlighted ,as if it is waiting to be moved to the front. When I want to see a window, I am now forced to minimize all other applications that are in front of it. I haven't been able to figure out the exact pattern of the problem, since sometimes the icons do respond by moving to front. The rest of my machine seems to working fine. I have performed an "sfc /scannow" command, but that gave no results. I have tried to reboot the machine and to restart the explorer.exe. I have checked for programs clogging up the cpu resources but the cpu is hardly used. There is also enough memory left on the machine.

Another sympton is that the taskbar icons on the right do not respond well, their menu's may 'hang' (they stay visible after being used), or the menu does not appear at all after right clicking.

I am runnning windows 7 on a HP Pavilion dv7 notebook.

A:Clicking taskbar icon does not cause move-to-front

Try a repair install. sfc /scannow cannot catch everything, so hopefully the repair will.

This is petty, but it's driving me nuts. A very short drive. I know I need to find iTunes.exe, but I cannot find anything but "iTunes" in Programs. Where is the .exe part?

A:Move iTunes icon from taskbar to start menu

Hi,
If iTunes is open and on your taskbar the exe is already open,
There are a few ways to add it to the start menu programs list,
One simple one is to drag the taskbar listing/ icon on top of the start button and pause for a moment until the start menu list appears, "do not drop yet"
Then drag it up to where you want it to be waiting for a horizontal line to appear and release the drag,
See if that helps,
Cheers.

Hello,

I notice that in Windows 7, when you right click a pinned program to the taskbar, the menu to select options is many pixels away from the program. In previous versions of Windows, the 'Close' function in the menu was a single pixel away from the cursor when you clicked, so you could close programs quickly. Now, in 7, I always have to move my mouse so far away to click the close option. Is there any way to change this?

Example (what all menus used to look like):

Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs easily, Forced Uninstall

Then I'd try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two) to see if any system files were damaged or corrupted by the TIC. If any problems are noted run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

Let's fix the duplicate icon first, open Firefox from the pinned icon you have already after the second one opens up unpin the first one and pin the second one that should stop the duplicate icon.

Now the icon go to C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar then right-click on the Firefox shortcut click on properties make sure you're in the Shortcut tab and click on the Change Icon Button. After you open up Firefox again icon will revert back to the default icon because it opens up Firefox.exe you would have to change the icon in the .exe for a permanent change.

Later, I had to do a fresh install of Windows 10 on a Samsung Evo SSD and this time, it didn't install my graphics card driver automatically, I had to download it from nvidia's website. Quick fix--log off and on again--icons reappear where they should. I am told that this disappearing activity is due to a Windows XP "BUG". What a problem! So a lot of people are complaining about the Windows 10 icon that shows in your icon tray after the KB3035583, which allows you to reserve your Windows 10 copy right away. Even thought you reserve it, it'll stay there. In order to remove it, you simply have to remove it from the start-up (and it's in the Task Scheduler). To do this, follow the instructions below.Edit: Added two other methods, one of which (Method 3) only hides it in the extended icon tray. Only Method 1 and Method 2 will prevent it from launching.Method 1 - Using AutorunsDownload Autoruns.zip from the Sysinternals Suite webpage;Extract the content of the Autoruns.zip folder where you want, then go in the folder, right-click on Autoruns.exe and select Run as Administrator;Accept the EULA on opening, then wait for all the entries to load;Click on Options and uncheck Hide Microsoft Entries, then wait for Autoruns to load the additional entries; In the Filter zone, enter gwx;Entrie related to GWX (Get Windows 10) will appear. Uncheck:\Microsoft\Windows\Setup\gwx\launchtrayprocess\Microsoft\Windows\Setup\gwx\refreshgwxconfigRestart your computer, and you're done;To enable it, simply check these entries back.Method 2 - Using Task Scheduler (credits to Dragonlady24 for the method and instructions)Original post: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/578100/remove-the-get-windows-10-icon-from-the-icon-tray/page-2#entry3723214The procedure has been modified to be more comprehensible and include instructions for both ... Hey all, my girlfriend is running Win 7 Home... she has always had the default Windows speaker "volume" icon down on her task bar by her clock. She uses it all the time to switch between her speakers and her headset, where she right clicks on the icon and selects "playback devices" and then changes between her soundcard/speakers and her usb headset.

Anyway, it disappeared last night.

Now open Taskbar, click on the "customize" link, get the window to select which icons appear... on the speaker "volume" icon under behaviors, it is set to "show icon and notifications"...

HOWEVER.

Then at the bottom click the link for "turn system icons on or off" and on that window, the icon is greyed out and set to OFF and it can not be changed to ON.

She's been bugging the heck out of me ever since to fix it.

We have no idea what changed it, or how it got changed.... we just know its been there and she's used it, for the past two years, and now its suddenly not there.

Any suggestions?

If I understand your question correctly, you are referring to the icons in the taskbar (adjacent to the clock). If this is correct, you should be able to right click an open space on the taskbar and uncheck lock taskbar. This will alow you to right click the offending icon and delete it. You can then go back and lock the taskbar again.

Hi,I hope someone here can help with this.
For some reason, the taskbar on my desktop has gone from being on the bottom,to going along the left side.I tried to drag it back, but the best I could do was to get along it on the top.Any ideas as to how I can get it back to the bottom?I tried dragging it all over the place, but it just won't go to the bottom.
It's running win 2000.Thanks.

A:Solved: Taskbar/system tray

Not sure if it's the same in Win2K, but won't hurt to try.

Right click on the taskbar and make sure "Lock The Taskbar" is unchecked, then just left click and hold on a blank area in the taskbar and drag it to the bottom, Lock it again when your done.

It seems my problem seems very small in comparison to all the recent worm problems (caught the bug, fixed it), but I have a little bug in the system that gets annoying.

I'm running Windows XP professional, and when I minimze a window, it's icon goes to the system tray instead of to the taskbar. If I click the program's name in the taskbar, it will go to the taskbar, but if I click the little underscore button in the top right of the window, it goes to the tray. Please tell me what's wrong. Thank you.

I'm running Windows 98 and recently upgraded my PC and re-installed the software.

Since then I have noticed that when I connect to my ISP it takes about 3 minutes to transfer the handshake Icon to my Desktop Taskbar tray.

The connectivity is not affected as ICQ boots up well before the transfer occurs.

Someone told me I'd have to reload my software, but I don't want to crack walnuts with a sledge hammer.

Soooooooooooooo, I have designated these as different even though they both go at the bottom of the screen.
The ones on the left seem to be known as icons in the "Taskbar" but the ones on the right when installed usually say they they can be put in the "Tray". What makes them different (at least on my both my Vista and 7 OS's) is that the ones on the left, in the Taskbar, are large and the ones on the right, in the Tray, are small.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo,
Is there anyway to make them all the same uniform pixel size?

(I dun't care about Vista anymore, Lucy)

thanks for the help.

A:Taskbar / Task Tray icons

If using small icons is ok with you, you can set that in taskbar properties.
Then they should all be the same size - small icons.
Right click on the Taskbar and click Properties.

Taskbar - Use Small or Large Icons

If you want large icons in the Notification Area I don't think you can do that.
Here is an old SF Thread about this:
Notification area icons and date/time font sizes

If you're adventurous you can play with customizations and see if you can find something you prefer:

Plz Help i want to solve this fast.

A:System Tray Icon

If you are sure they are running in the background, you can set the properties of the system tray to always display the icons.

right-click on the task bar and choose 'properties'. At the bottom of the dialog click on 'Customise'. Here you set McAfee and Antispyware to 'Always Show'.

Another problem could be that they are not running. You may need to open MCAfee and Antispyware and set them to run at startup.

Would like to be able to use the power systray icon to change power schemes but...

windows 7 fails, how do i enable this?

A:Power tray icon???

Hello, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Unless your computer is a laptop or a desktop with a compatible UPS backup battery, the Power icon will not be available. If you do have a laptop, then sometimes restarting the computer brings it back.

A workaround is to create a shortcut (right click) for Power Options in the Control Panel (All Items view) to make changing it easier.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

In WinXP I had that two computer internet connection icon in system tray that really helped me to know about my internet connection. In my Win7 there is no such thing, how can I get it ? is there anything like this buried in Win7 or should I get some app ?

There's a Network icon in the Notification Area. It has a different look for ethernet and wireless, and neither is the same appearance as in XP. If it does not appear you can Customize the Notification Area to specify that the Network icon always appears.

I have xp sp2, and i have a problem with this irritating icon in the tray (by the clock). It's a hp logo and whenever i hover my mouse over it, it disappears only to come back when i move the mouse away. If that isnt bad enough, if you leave it (dont hover the mouse over) it flickers in a way, it looks as though it disappears and reappears every 3 seconds. Any suggestions? I'll inclue a picture of the icon from a screenshot. Thanks

A:Annoying icon in tray...

If you click the icon what does it do? If it's a program of some kind maybe you can go into it and find where to turn it off from running in the tray.
