I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: windows xp pro screen saver doesn't function

Hello campus56

1.If you are using an old mouse, try cleaning it.

2. You might have a process running in the background that keeps XP thinking it is busy and so the screen saver won`t start.
Go into msconfig and uncheck everything you don`t need, then see if the screen saver will kick in.

Start/Run and type in

Startup Tab
Keep the page open then go to link below. It will tell you what all the entries are and whether you can disable them or not

Read the Key at foot of page, then click on "Here" at top. Use the Search box to check all your entries

3. Try this too

Line 51 left hand side. Click on "Disable/Enable"

It could be that something is resetting the timer. It doesn't take very much vibration to move the mouse a little bit and that sets the timer back to zero. Could something like that be a possibility? Or a pet that walks on the keyboard?

Hello. I use the Windows Live Photo Gallery as my screen saver on Windows 7. When screen saver starts, it gets stuck on this one image and doesn't switch to other images. On the Screen Saver menu, if I click "Preview" then it works normally. It's only when the Screen Saver begins by itself then it won't change images. Other screen savers work fine. Thank you Boaz

I have an ASUS notebook running windows 7 64-bit. I am using the QuietOffice power profile, however the screensaver won't kick in no matter what I do, and the display does not turn off even though I set it to be after 5-minutes of inactivity. I don't know if there is something running in the background... I have turned off my usb wireless mouse, and nothing....

Any ideas?

A:HELP: power option doesn't work - screen saver doesn't start!

This is another case of factory bloatware interfering - in this case a useless factory utility overriding Win7's superior built-in version.

Googling the Quiet Office feature of Asus there are multiple reported problems. Best to default to the Win7 built-in Power Options in Control Panel. Set up a Balanced Plan unless you're a gamer then use High Performance.

Here are other tips for cleaning up factory bloatware

I have my machine set to start the Aurora (pretty!) screen saver after five minutes idle and then to shut off the monitor after ten minutes. Today, after being gone for two hours, I came back to find that the screen saver had never started. I'm the only one who uses this machine, so I know no one woke it up in the mean time.

Is there some known problem with screen savers not starting in Vista?

A:Screen saver doesn't start

Yes. It could be a mouse issue, in fact. There's a chance your mouse "drifts." There's a utility somewhere, put out by someone, to fix it. I don't remember where (maybe MS forums will give you a clue).

To test that, see if you still have a ball mouse lying around that you could plug in to test it.

I have a Compaq laptop 32 bit running on Vista Home Basic. I have set my screen saver to 'kick in' after 100 minutes, that way I can watch a catch up movie or a lengthy video on You Tube. After approximately 15 minutes (if I don't remember to move the mouse) the screen goes blank, then I have to move the mouse to get the screen back. Sometimes the movie starts with no sound and no matter what I do, I can't get the sound back. I then have to close the movie down and start all over.
Any help you can give, will be most appreciated.

I have my screensaver set for ten minutes and have my monitor set to go blank at 20. That is what yours is doing. If you want to change the time before it goes blank check in your Control Panel under Power Options. You should not leave your screen on all the time, there is no reason. Let it go blank after about 20 minutes.

I have my power settings set so the screen saver comes on after 10 minutes, and the display turns off after 15 minutes. Everything starts off hunky dory. Though whenever I add a monitor or change resolutions there's a 50/50 chance I'll get a "windows explorer has stopped responding, windows explorer is restarting" error. Once that restarts my screensaver/power options won't start again until I reboot the computer.

Previewing the screen saver works, but it won't start up by itself.

Changing or resetting the power plans has no effect.

A:Screen saver doesn't turn on after explorer crashes

The screensaver and some of the power functions are handled by the video drivers. Update those if possible.

If those video drivers are already up to date, then let's start looking for a reason for explorer restarting. Use Process Explorer to see you we can find an app that is exiting and taking explorer down with it. You can change one setting to make it easier to see such an app:
File > Options > Difference Highlight Duration
...set that to 9 seconds.

If Process Explorer does not help, then take as many things out of the equation as you can via this process: Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

If a clean boot does not stop explorer from restarting when you change screen resolutions then spend some time with these steps: Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

I was wondering if anyone knew what settings I could change to lock the computer after it goes to sleep/screen saver kicks in (like XP Pro does). I just realized that after the screen saver and/or sleep kicks in, when I reactivate the computer, it doesn't revert to the windows logon screen (yes, the on resume, display logon screen is checked in the screen saver), it goes straight back into the account it was in.

I tried changing all kinds of security settings but to no avail. Anyone know a way around, or if this is a common issue?

PS - I set my logon screen to not show user names, so you need both the user name and password to access any account (and no-one can tell how many accounts are on the system), not sure if that "setting" is an issue to automatically go to the log-on screen after sleeping/screen saver. Help...thanks.

Okay forum I am coming to you once again for a little assistance.

Today I went to fire up my desktop and everything loaded quick and fine as usual. But when I went to click on my browser nothing happened. I then proceeded to try and click on my Windows Start button but again nothing happened. Nothing will function at all. The system just freezes and won't do anything.

My system is set up using an SSD for the OS and a RAID0 array for the programs and user files. While I have had issues with CHKDSK pulling the Raid array apart it is now disabled on both the SSD and the Raid array. I tried loading with the install disk and going to a restore point but the only one is from the updates yesterday and the issue still remains. I have also tried the SFC /SCANNOW using the command prompt on the install disk and it found no errors. I'm at a loss here and really don't want to do a fresh install. This thing is a pain to set up.

Thanks all in advance.

A:Windows 7 Opens and looks fine but doesn't function

Okay so I figured it all out. Still not sure why it happened but here's how I fixed it. I rebooted the system and loaded into safe mode. Once in I accessed the hidden system admin, found my user profile and transferred it over to another drive just in case. During the transfer the loader froze so I had to abort with a manual system power down (holding down the D-Day button). Once the system booted up (again into safe mode) I ran CHKDSK again on both drives. Again the results came back negative. However when the system rebooted into normal OPS I had a functional desktop. The only issue being that even though I logged into my profile, once in I got an error. "You have been signed into a temporary profile, etc. etc." Since I at least have some headway I jumped over to the hidden system admin and went to the REGEDIT. I found my User Profile Registry Key, backed it up and deleted it and rebooted. After I rebooted I no longer had this error but none of my saved files, movies or pictures were anywhere to be found. I did however manage to keep my programs installed. But then I got to thinking about that file I tried to back up. I tried to open it and got an error. I tried to delete it and it wouldn't let me. I finaly played it all out and ran CHKDSK again from safe mode on both drives. Lots of errors. After I booted the system up this last time I was able to open the file and low and behold I at least saved my docs and pics. Just transferred everything over and am now back ... Read more

I recently upgraded my 3 computers to Windows 8.1. Only 1 PC (INTEL) is working as it should. The other 2 PC's are AMD based and the search function is acting funny. When I search it gives my the results, but when I click on says I'm looking for DEVICES AND PRINTERS and I search "printers", it gives my the result. If I click on DEVICES AND PRINTERS tab it doesn't respond, but when I click on say my Canon printer's link to MY PRINTER it responds. I ran SFC/SCANNOW and also DISM (Micorsoft actually ran it) and nothing changed. It sometimes locks me onto the Meto screen and I have to reset the PC to get back to my normal Desktop. When it does that non of the Metro tiles works. Micorsoft technician also tried to create a new user account which comes out blank and when creating another account, as soon as you log into the account it immediately signs out of it and don't allow you access. I tried to refresh the pc, but the frustrating part is, it asks you to choose a keyboard layout, but disables all USB and PS ports. Now how do I choose a keyboard layout, unless I have a touch screen. Microsoft really didn't think this trough. Is there anybody that perhaps now how to get the searh to work. Oh I do have searchindex.exe in my system32 folder and in services I stop and restarted Windows Search, but still no change.

A:Search function in Windows 8.1 doesn't work as it should

Problem solved. After Microsoft technicians tried everything and my PC crashed I decided to just redo. Then I found out that a program called Wisecare 365 that I was running on my Windows 8 PC caused all the problems. It went and deleted registry and other files that windows 8.1 need to operate with. So it's no longer on my PC and so far Windows 8.1 is running fine.

I've got a problem where my screen saver will not activate in windows XP and I was wondering if anyone else has had the same issue.

I have tried setting it manually through control panel/display and also through Group Policy with a W2K server without any luck.

This is the only XP P.C. I have in the network, everyone else is running W2K pro without a problem.

All other areas of Group Policy look to be applied correctly on the XP machine (I have hid the screen saver and background tabs through Group Policy to verify this). I have also tried different screen savers to see if that was the problem. Even the default logon.scr will not activate.

Any assistance would be most welcome as this problem is starting to do my head in.

I have my screen saver set at 15 minutes. I first noticed something odd this past weekend. The screen saver was on when I drifted off to the land of sweet dreams. Sometime during the night I woke up, looked across the room, and I saw my desktop.

Other than thinking "why do I see my desktop" I thought nothing else about it.

Since then I have actually seen the screen saver disappear and my desktop appear. I was on the other side of the room, not on the computer, the mouse did not get moved, and nothing happened that would cause this.

I've not been able to figure out why all of a sudden the desktop would appear. Does anyone have any clues that might explain this or suggestions on what I can do to keep the screen saver on until I want to go to my desktop?

edit to add: After I made my post earlier, I noticed that after a while the screen saver would come back on and stay on a while before going back to the desktop. It's caught in a loop of going back and forth. In the grand scheme of things, this is not a biggie but I'd still like to know why this is happening.

That's a new one Queen-Evie. I know you have already checked your settings. The only thing I can think of is that something you have set scheduled to do a scan or a program is checking for updates. You could also unplug you keyboard and mouse and see if it still happens. Their could be a circuit in either one of them with a little problem that could cause that to happen.

I've been having various problems after loading internet explorer 7.0 about a month ago. I did get rid of it and went back to the older version. My machine has been getting slower and slower. I have used system restore about once every 2 weeks since I have had this computer. (about 2.5 years) I defragment every month or so. I have Lava Soft anti spyware, Spyware Doctor and Panda Titanium. I run a scan everyday and put forth extra effort to keep the system clean. My newest problem seems to be associated with the screen saver. After a fresh restart everything seems to be ok for a while even after the screen saver starts. When I come back to my machine after an hour or so, the screensaver is running in extra slow motion, almost froze. When I move my mouse nothing happens. My only option has been the old control/alt/delete to get the saver off the screen. When the end program window pops up, I simply cancel it and everything seems normal at first. Then when I try to do anything else the hour glass keeps popping up at some point on the screen. It will go away after a few seconds but this happens over and over again as if the computer is trying to load something. Now, anything I attempt to do operates extremely slow and continues to do so until I restart. Then everything is fine at first. Then the same cycle repeats. I have no problems doing anything for as long as I want and remain active, but as soon as I'm idle and the saver kicks in, here we go again. I have reset the... Read more

I want to have a screen saver of my personal photos that are shuffled and fade in/out as the photos change. This used to be an option, but Windows 10 does not make that option obvious at all. It is not present on the screen saver settings menu.

Can anyone explain why Windows periodically freezes when the screen saver is running?

At first I thought it was due to the Windows Live Photo Gallery. After running for several hours (overnight, for e.g.), it would freeze on one picture. Usually moving the mouse would eventually close the screen saver and I'd return to the desktop.

I then changed to a regular screen saver, Mystify. Usually this isn't a problem, but today when I moved the mouse, the screen saver froze. I couldn't soft boot, actually had to shut down manually. This is the second time this has happened.

I've checked whether I'm using the latest video driver using device manager, and it says everything is up to date. I'm using NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430, driver version Could there be a device conflict? How would I be able to tell? Thanks.

I am at a loss for what is happening here.

This issue just appeared out of nowhere a few days ago. Did the basic troubleshooting of checking settings, unplugging and reinserting my USB devices, updating drivers and running Windows Update to no avail. Even verified screensaver was not disabled in registry. I have now found that the screensaver will work after a reboot but once I play a game or other fullscreen 3D application the screensaver no longer works.

I figured there was a process or something in the background breaking system idle timer so I downloaded Turn of Monitor and Process Monitor to see what was going on. It got late so I left the timer running in Turn of Monitor and decided to work on it the next day. I was shocked to come back to my PC and find that Turn of Monitor showing that my system had no user input for 38,947 seconds (That's 10 hours 48 Minutes) yet my screensaver set to turn on after 15 minutes was still nowhere to be seen. WTF!!

Only change that has happened in the past week or so besides automatic Windows updates is that I installed GTA V through steam.

Any advice out there besides "just wait for windows 10 to come out"

I have an XP OS on a PC and have an interesting issue regarding the Screen Saver.

I have the screen saver pointing to a folder containing a group of family photos which I have in an order I wish to have displayed. When the screen saver 'kicks in', the photos are displayed in random order.

I would like to arrange to have them displayed in the order they are stored in the folder.

Can I do this and how?

A:Windows Screen Saver Question

Hi polaris6,

I just went scurrying through my settings and I didn't see anything that would allow me to set the order... I think randomness is the order of the day, though it would sound logical that you should be able to set 'my pictures slide show' to show stuff in the order of your choosing.

Maybe there is a seperate utility that would allow you to do what you're trying to do,

Good Luck,

After a couple of days of testing, I've discovered a possible bug in the code. It has to do with the screen saver and power saver settings. I've done every kind of voodoo I know of, and even had a consultation with our resident expert johngalt. We both agree that these features not working is part of either a bug in the code, or lack of code. In either case, if your screen saver isn't working along with your power saver options, you are not alone.

Should some kind of work around be found, we'll post it in this thread.

Possible solution: If you are using a Microsoft Mouse (like I am), you'll need to download the beta software for your mouse from Microsoft. This fixed the screen saver/power settings issue on my pc. Here's the link:

Microsoft Hardware Windows? 7 Support

A:Windows 7 (7000) Screen Saver

I am going to try to force power off / standby using the power button on my keyboard - let's see what happens.

I also need to link the other thread to this one - at first I thought another user was having issues, but now I am not so sure....

Purchased new Dell Desk Top with Windows XP Service Pack 1 alrady installed. I can not get the screen saver to work. Tried resetting it. Nothing. The monitor will power off when in the personality screen.

A:Windows XP Screen Saver Problem

First the screen saver: Right click anywhere on the desktop and select properties, then select the screen saver tab.Choose the screen saver from the dropdown list (you can preview before you set it) then make sure you click apply then ok.

Next the monitor:Go to control panel/power options,on the next box, under settings for home...,are the settings for powering off the monitor (I have mine set to never, just my personal preference)

If the above dosen't work, then log on as administrator to make the changes

Just bought a Asus desktop and had issues with my screensaver working. Spent 1/2 hour on tel with teck support, got nowhere. Found out that wireless mouses still emit a signal even when still. Have a Microsoft Wireless Laser 6000. Worked fine but....no screensaver. Googled my mouse, went on the software update. found out there was an update for the 6000 for windows 7, downloaded it and badabing presto! Screensaver works. All my other presets for turning monitor off after so many minutes, works, hybernation, works. Good to go. So my problem was the Mouse.(no more cheese hehe). Hope this helps.

Sorry, I did not know which forum to put this in....I bought Microsoft Plus! for WindowsXP long time ago....could not ever use it because my older computer did not have enough oomph etc., to run it...it would run part of it but the part I wanted was the "Space" screensaver...have tried everywhere to find out if this would run on my new computer....would I damage anything by trying to install it or would it simply not work? Anyone that can help I would appreciate it....have wasted my money on this program and would love to use it....thanks in advance!

Hi all

I have just bought a brand spanking new laptop with windows 7 on it, its all good! apart from my screen saver wont come on, i can preview it fine but it wont come on itself.

I do have a wireless Microsoft mouse which after a bit of google could be the problem, and sure enough if i unplug the mouse the screen saver then works just fine.

Is there a fix for this anywhere that anyone knows about as i cant seem to find one

Thanks all

A:Solved: Windows 7 Screen Saver Issue

Install the latest driver for the mouse. See if that works if not let me know. If not, you can do windows updates and see if that resolves the issue as it should install the most updated driver for the mouse.

I am new to the forum and hope someone with plenty of knowledge can help me.

I have upgraded through Windows XP, 7 and finally to 10, and have found an old windows Christmas theme with an animated cursor and animated screensaver which works under Windows 10. The files are dated December 2004. Does anyone know how to get any of the old style themes to work under Windows 10, as I have had no luck so far.
