I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi: Contact HP, and they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at bootup to reset the password.  http://welcome.hp.com/country/w1/en/contact_us.htm??l When talking to the HP rep, ask them to escalate your service request. In the USA/Canada, you can call this toll free number for assistance.  1-800-334-5144 Have the serial number of the notebook handy to give to the customer services rep.

Hello dear hp wizards! I have a weird problem. When I'm attempting to install the newest BIOS update thru HP Support Assistant, the installation program asks me for my BIOS password which doesn't work for some reason, but it works fine at startup when I access BIOS setup / update BIOS after I have to give the password there, it even gives me the happy "bleep bleep bleep bleep"- sound. I've never had this problem before.  Any ideas? kody

Currently, I'm trying to format an Acer TravelMate 4100 with PhoenixBIOS. I know how to format computers, I have the recovery CDs and everything, but when I try to boot BIOS from those CDs, BIOS asks me for a password... I've tried every password that I've used for other things, I've tried backdoor passwords ('bios', 'phoenix', 'PHOENIX', and 'cmos'). Also, I removed the CMOS battery without any success either.

Is there any way to reset the password, or maybe another way to boot from the CDs?

Thanks in advance

PS. I'm new here, so I didn't really know in which category to put this post.

Hello, this is my first post to this site. I appreciate any advice you may have to offer.

I have an HP Pavilion XH365 (laptop). It was given to me for the reason I am writing to you today; the system/BIOS is password protected.

I power on the unit and am immediately prompted for a password. I am unable to boot to anything (HDD, CD, FDD), nor am I able to access the BIOS/CMOS menus.

In the past I have overcome this problem on other computers by using default passwords, booting to lived CDs, removing the CMOS battery, and other rather popular suggestions found on google (praise google!!!)

Unfortunately these methods have not been successful on this particular laptop.
I intend to revive this otherwise archaic device with linux if I can solve this password issue.
Thank you for your help

There is, in my opinion, no reason to put a password on your BIOS.

But they are unable to solve my problem.
I know my laptop is now out of warranty.

The unknown BIOS password cannot be removed/deleted easily.
The unknown BIOS password can be removed ONLY by a Toshiba authorized service provider.

From my knowledge the Satellite M30-742 PSM30E-7100V-EN was released in Europe (probably for UK market)
So probably you will need to contact the Toshiba ASP available in UK in order to remove the BIOS password.

Here you can find a link to all Toshiba ASPs available world wide:

I just can not believe that, anyone has the same problem or any advise?
Thanks very much guys.

A:XPS 15 L521x BIOS PASSWORD Problem

If you did not change the password, and it suddenly fails to work, either something is wrong with the keyboard (you can try an external USB one), or as Support has indicated, if a master password hasn't worked, the mainboard is faulty.

Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I wasn't fully sure on the right place.
I just had a customer in who was having an issue reverting his Windows 8 laptop to windows 7 and I said I'd take a look at the bios settings.

Anyway while in there, all options for everything were greyed out so nothing could be changed.
The only thing I could do was change the password (he had a bios password originally), and when I looked online somebody mentioned resetting the password, so I thought there is nothing to lose.

I got him to type his bios password in and then as the new password I got him to hit enter twice to blank out the bios password.

We reset the machine, went to the bios and up popped the password field to my surprise. I hit enter and it came up as wrong. We tried the old password and that was also wrong.

Any ideas what this could be? I won't be seeing the person now until Friday, so I am looking for some good news before he comes in.
The laptop is a Lenovo

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

This isn't you're typical lost password and can't access the system problem, this is quite the opposite. From my understanding a bios system password should ask for a password on each system boot/restart, however I have been prompted once after setting the password but never since.
If I enter BIOS setup then it will again ask me for the password but again afterwards will not ask me again. I have updated to the latest BIOS, please help!

Unfortunately I think only an authorized service provider can help you to get rid of the password because they have special tools to do this and know how to do it. Maybe some jumpers must be set but I don?t know?

On the Toshiba website you can find a list of ASPs? Give them a call and ask for help, that?s all! ;)

Dear Customer, Welcome to HP Support Forum and we are glad to assist you. This is to inform you that all HP Business Notebooks such as Probooks  or Elitebooks have more stringent security than consumer models infact they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial Number and thecode is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case. Please have a look at this link. http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/49497-HP-Probook-Elitebook-BIOS-Password-Reset-Utility Replace the BIOS chiphttp://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Elitebook-8470p-8470w-8570p-8570w-8770w-Programmed-Bios-Chip-No-Password-... Please Contact HP Business Notebook support they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password. Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again  **Click the White Thumbs Up Button on the right to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,GBL84I am not an HP Employee

Bios Password word Lock problem

I bought a refurbished Dell D600, 60 GB laptop running WinXP SP2 .. It has a legit winxp license but came with no Recovery /Driver CDs .

A few days ago experienced blue “Kernel data inpage error – and basically advice was “if 1st time you see this just reboot machine” so I did … approx 1 hour later happened again – so followed ”if seen this before follow steps below”

Up popped Dell screen effectively telling me “Primary HDD was protected by password authenticated … system and that I could not access disk without the password” . BUT I had not set one had only set user acct pwords !

I tried rebooting many times and could NOT get past this screen , in the end left it a few hours. to search on web for some more suggestions… and contact reseller etc..

The reseller comp I bought it from again confirmed they had definitely set NO passwords, which is exactly what I had been told when I purchased it, so having searched on web and seen zillions of entries from people in same situation ( saying Dell could help with an override password which will unlock bios with master password generated from service tag ended with -595... In the process of performing a clean, 'unattended' install of Windows XP on a Dell Dimension E520, I decided to enter the BIOS and clear the existing "System" password as the computer requires several boots during the installation procedure. Upon saving the changes and exiting the BIOS, the computer rebooted and requested (you guessed it) a password. What? I thought I had removed the BIOS password! I turned the computer off, unplugged it, pulled the two-pinned jumper switch for 30 seconds and started the computer once again. Yep, it still wanted the now, *non-existent* password. As this Dell uses a Phoenix BIOS, I inputted several known backdoor passwords; none of which worked. I then shut down, removed the CMOS battery, and left it off for more than three hours. I started this Dell up again, and it *still* wants a password. BTW, this Dell has been turned off, minus the CMOS battery for more than 12 hours. I'm going to leave it off for a total of 24 hours to see if the "capacitor drain" solution will finally clear the BIOS settings, etc. God, how I hate Dells! If someone knows of a more 'radical' solution, please feel free to chime in. At this point, I'm willing to try anything! Thanks!

You'll need to call Dell with verification of ownership -- it may not be worth it though, since the call will cost about $60, which is probably about six times more than the entire system is worth.
The other option is to replace the mainboard - which is probably well under $60.

The thing is it seems to auto enter in 10 characters (*) and then stop. There are no other options.

I have searched unsuccessfully for any info about this and I cant even find where the CMOS is located which I think is soldered onto the board.

Has anybody had any similar experience like this?

So when the tablet gets turned on I can scan my finger and get in without any issues, however I now want to turn the boot up security off. So I booted it in to the OS and went to disable it....however it asks for my password....which I have forgot as I have been a typical end user and have been only using my bloody finger!

Does anyone know if I can disable the BIOS security while in the OS using the biomentric security rather than entering a password? I have tried just changing the admin password within the win OS but that doesn't work....any ideas?

Any help with be greatly appreciated!

You are speaking about BIOS password which you set up in the BIOS?
As far as I know you cannot remove the BIOS password if you don?t know the old BIOS password.
In such case just the Toshiba ASP could help you? just the Toshiba ASP technician could remove the unknown BIOS password
