Securing Files for Distribution

Q: Securing Files for Distribution

Uh..not really sure if this belongs in this forum.

I was wondering if it was possible to distribute a file like a pdf such that it can only be read on one computer (much like a program can only be used on 1 computer)? And also if there is software that does this for me or something of that nature? I am looking to sell a pdf to some friends of mine but I don't want them just copying it for other people. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Securing Files for Distribution

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I remember years ago, using MS Word 97 in either Windows 98 or XP, I managed to create a password lock for a file that I use to this day - even now using MS Word 2007. I don't remember exactly how I did it. I can't seem to be able to do that at all now.
Seen a few ways to hide a file/folder using a convoluted script and pay through the nose to get specialized software.
There must be an easy way to do this.

A:Securing files and folders

To set a password in MS Word 2007 click the Microsoft Office Button , click Save As, and on the bottom of the Save As dialog, click Tools. On the Tools menu, click General Options. Under File sharing options for this document you can add a password to open or to modify the document.

I have a ton of files in C:\windows\software distribution\downloads\ and have searched online about deleting them. 1 person says it is safe, 1 says don't do it... I'd love to free up the space if it is safe to do so.
I would also like to get rid of other unnecessary features like Tour XP and MSN Gaming but I don't know how to delete the tour and I get a message saying I can't delete Gaming.
Is there any way to do this w/o causing problems?
Is there a link to info on what can be deleted/how to do it anywhere? I know using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel is 1 way but there is a lot of stuff on XP that doesn't show up there.

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this Tech forum but am frustrated and hoping someone can help.

Last night at 3am (and I've seen similar postings on google but no assistance), my computer ran an update (I know to now turn off auto updates)... As a result, I have lost all files I had in a back up folder connected to my old hard drive (new hard drive and link to old hard drive).

Just gone. All of my media files and pictures are missing. I did a system restore and it did nothing but did say the last update was a Service Distribution Service 2.0. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

A:Software Distribution Service 2.0 - Now lost all pictures, media files

This same update actually crashed my machine. I had to run a chkdsk /f in order to get it up and running again.

Perhaps your issue is similar, to run chkdsk, go to the Start Menu and select Run type chkdsk C: /f then click OK. Chkdsk might not be able to lock your drive for a scan and will prompt to run at next reboot. Just type Y press enter and reboot.
Substitute C: for the drive letter with the problem.

I am operating with Windows Vista Home Basic and have had trouble updating my files after a clean reinstallation. Finally succeeded through many strategies, but in doing so (a jillion times) eventually noticed that failures occurred whenever the 'System Distribution' file in the windows folder had not been emptied of logs and previous downloads. Not sure what this means. Any ideas? Could there be a problem with hard disk, processor, motherboard, electrical shorts? (Do not have problems downloading to other computers in my home, so my overall connection is good.)

I just got win8.  I removed all its default bloatware (including some crappy mcafee) and I'm wondering what I should to do keep it secure.  I put mbam on it and activated the trial with live protection.  I also put on superantispyware and I'm considering adding avast.  What do people recommend?
I ran tdsskiller just to check it out and to my surprise it crashed
do you think this is a concern?  I ran it again and it worked (didn't find anything) but it seems kinda strange that it crashed to me.  also superantispyware which I'm running for the first time is going really really slow.  It quarantined a bunch of stuff and its taking foreverrr to delete stuff.  It's been going about 5 solid minutes and it still hasn't finished.  Any ideas why this would be?
I kinda want to put comodo firewall on but I don't want to screw my os up or anything but it would be nice to have a powerful firewall which I could lock down if wanted.  What would you guys recommend?  What would you do to secure a new pc?  Just curious to other peoples ideas  cheers

A:Securing New PC

Hello nexus666,
Before I make any suggestions, please understand that my recommendations are based on my needs alone and may not apply to yours. So, with that said, the first thing I would consider is your own surfing habits. Now, for my purposes, I consider myself to be a safe-surfer. Please understand that even I get caught at times but my current configuration of using Avast 8 + the Windows 8 inherent firewall has served me well. However, if you consider yourself to be a risky surfer, then you might need a bit more protection and this could come in the form of some combination of programs to lessen your risk. Now, because I do not place myself in the risky category, I cannot address the risks associated with same so I will leave that for other forum members to address as needed. Good luck.

Help! I'm about to pull all the hair out of my head!

I have a Siemens 2624 DSL/Cable Router. I'm trying to encrypt my wireless network. I got into the router settings. The only encryption choice within is WEP 64 or 128 bit. There is no WPA or WPA2 or anything other than that. The other choices within for these particular settings are: automatic, open or shared.

My laptop has an Intel Pro 3945 wireless card that has other choices besides WEP. It works fine without the security settings. No problem at all. When I tried to set it up for security either I cannot connect. It is asking for a network security key which I got by running set up a wireless network on my big PC, which has the router attached. This code is a lot of numbers and letters. I've tried all kinds of settings. I know it must be something really simple I am not getting.

In addition, I'd like to update my router's firmware (maybe that would give me more security options).

I just want a secure network. I hope someone can help.

A:Securing my network

Yes, a router firmware upgrade may give you WPA-PSK capability.

Disable encryption on the router and connect your PC. Then re-enable encryption and reconnect.

If you have to use WEP be sure to use a HEX key, not an ascii passcode that can be translated differently by different devices.

Hi, I'm currently taking a Windows Vista class at my college. I'm working on an assignment right now and have gotten stuck:

They want me to create a folder in C: and "Secure the folder only allowing the user account (user name here) to access it".

I've created the folder, right-clicked to view its properties, selected the Security tab... and don't really know what to do from there.

Any help would be great.

A:Securing Folders

Once you have right clicked the folder and selected the security tab you should see a box with the title group and user names, underneath that box it should say Edit click that button

a new window should open up with a list of group or user names

Its here where you can select who has access and how much acess

Select the user from the top box and tick the relevant check boxs in the bottom box

once done click apply and ok

you should now have locked the folder so that only one person may have access to it

Is there anyway for me to find out if he is logging into my computer somehow? Or is that even possible?

A lot of times I have to reboot my computer and again while I'm not a techie person, I bought a top of the line computer about 1 year ago. When I reboot it tells me that other people are logged into my computer and shutting it down will cause them to lose information.

Ive been told over an over Christy just go in an delete all the stuff you don't know what it is and don't need. Problem is I dunno what any of it is and/or if I need it.

Win XP p4

I always had a problem with scratching my CD's, so in 1998 I started making backups of all my music on my computer. Worked great until a few years ago when I got a decent stereo for my computer.

I keep everything Music\Artist\Album\ and I'm having problems because people are moving one folder into another one. And I just noticed today that I'm completely missing a Zeppelin CD that I remember getting as a gift when I was 19 (NOT COOL).

I've been looking around online all day for a solution and I can't seem to find anything. There are a ton of file security programs that will hide everything, but that won't do me any good. I need to somehow make these files read only. And I mean really read only, not the BS checkbox in windows that lets you do whatever you like to the file(altho if I could get that box to make them unchangeable it would be the perfect solution). I want to be able to play them, but I don't want to be able to delete them change their locations, or modify them in any sense. Closest I've come is File Guard by superhero software, and all it does is make a log of the modification/deletion so I don't spend an hour trying to figure out what happened to it like I did today.

I posted to the media forum, but I think this may be a better place. Scorpion suggested I set up a series of shortcuts, but as this would be harder to organize and play I don't think it will work out for me. Like I said, I've been m... Read more

Months ago I received a "code number" for use in IMO - a service like whatsapp/telegram.
But it wasn't asking money, at least
Honestly, I don't know if it is a malware or if someone used my phone number to register there. They say to send an SMS to X number to stop the service, but actually I guess it's a double scam: if you send an sms, you are activated to their service; if you don't, you "only" are in a phishing list.
Funny fact: in the message is linked also a WAP site/service. In 2017!
Luckily, I don't use any credit card on phone.

I don't know much about this stuff, so i hope this makes sense. Boise I own a computer service company, and once upon a time was curious to try CA products, they are the WORST!! OMG, I was contacted by a rep wanting me to sell the product, so I thought I would personally give it a try before putting it on client computers.

I found a REALLY old virus on a thumb drive and it took the system DOWN!!

CA Support had to "look" into the problem and get back to me....

My suggestion GET RID of CA on your system.

I have had great results by using

MalwareBytes is a free product, but the paid edition is SO much better, you get real time protection and scheduled updates and scans

At church, we have a computer in the saunctuary running Win XP that we use for presentations during services. Up until now, we have all used the same login account, but now we need to create a guest account for about 6 weeks for some other users that are doing a special project during the week. They will be unmonitored and limited on their computer skills, so I have some issues that I need to address.

I created a "limited" account, gave it a password... so far so good! They cannot get in to our "main" account "My Documents" folder which is good.

Here's my question: is there a way to lock them out of certain programs, like Internet Explorer for sure.

Here's the scenario... they need to use PowerPoint and Photo Impact 7 only. We do not want them using the internet or messing around in the other programs, or worst yet, getting into some system file or erasing files.

Any help would be great,

Thanks, Jimmy

Hi all,

So how would i secure this?

I was curious if anyone had knowledge about not just programs to use ( As I've tried almost all of them on PC World Download Center and otherwise ); but any tips or basic non-program actions someone would take to clean and secure their PC to the upmost.

The WINDOWS and system folders have alot of files that are obviously related to core function in Windows, but some are related to games, old files, etc. A program that can depict what is what would be awesome, as freeing and cleaning up space their would be nice.

Also, a "better" defrag program would be quite helpful aswell. Been having problems with the Windows Defrag not rearranging everything it says it will, etc.

Thanks! Email me if you have any info.

Can anyone point me to a tutorial on how to secure my intranet server? I'm very new at this.

Perhaps I should add a few more details. This will be used to run a php app with access to a mysql database. It will be tiny, just the server and about 4-5 clients.

And I should also add, I don't know how to setup an intranet, much less a secure one.

You have enough. You may & probably will get other recommendations for anti spyware but you could keep changing & adding. You have to decide when to stop. You have what I used to have except for the CC thing, never had one of those
Now I just use one anti virus anti spyware, firewall, program,I highly recommend it because I get in one program what what it used to take three or more to do.

I'd like to allow individuals to view images but not copy and paste them or print them. Can you share images this way? If so, how do you go about it? FTP? My own website?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I need to send, via email, some tax related files to my accountant ( doc, xls, pdf etc)

I thought the easiest way to do this, with some level of secrity/deterrent , would be to zip them and apply some security/encryption.

I currently have no zip software other than native Win 7 (send to compressed folder). Is there any recommended software that can get the job done easily with making the process to complicated. I am open to any commercial software as well.

I downloaded 7-zip Ver 9.2 but could not see any security.

Is WinZip still a good choice? I downloaded Winziip V16 64-bit ( but not WinZip courier just yet). So far I hate it. It doesnt remeber where my files are ( always need to drill down) and I cannot figure out yet how to password protect the zip files. Ver 4, circa 1990, was so much easier

7-zip should do the job.

I've got a small network in my home (3 computers all running XP SP2). Two are personal laptops, and one is a shared computer. On the shared computer, I have set up user accounts, locked down my admin login both in normal and safe mode, and set a BIOS Admin password. The network is being fed the internet via cable broadband.

One of my user accounts is for a 15 year old. He does not have his account password, in order to limit access to the account when an adult is not home. However, I would like to set a password for the internet to keep him from accessing the internet when logged into his accout.

I suppose I could simply log into the router, and kill internet to the shared computer, but I'd like to be able to limit user access via password.

Any ideas?

I don't see how you can without installing a program locally on the shared computer, and even if you did that, what's stopping him from tampering with it. Your best bet would be to use the router to block port 80 for that computer when you aren't around.

So I'll be bringing my XP notebook to college this year and accessing their wi-fi network. I'd like to know what I should be doing to ensure I'm safe from my malevolent and destructive classmates, who will surely steal all my information and print porn to my printer to waste ink if they get the chance.

The notebook's been set up to share files and printers with my family's desktop computer. I know I need to turn off sharing for all the file folders. And I need to get SP2. Is there anything else I need to do?

Got a new Omen laptop with an SSD and a HDD. Not sure if this is the place to ask this but don't where is.I am not a gamer but do have a lot of Word and Excel files and millions of pictures. I would like to put all my user files on the HDD, but the HDD comes completely blank and apparently not set up from the factory to save your files there. I would like to organize it like my old Win 7 pc basically, and have Public Documents, Public Pictures, and User1 Documents, User1 Pictures, User2 Documents etc. so the Public Doc's are available to everyone, and the Users Doc's are only available to the individual user, like Win 7 was when you password protected your account. Can anyone help or send me to the place to get my answers? I'm not a complete computer novice, but neither am I an expert, so I don't want too much technical stuff, just a simple answer if there is one. Thanks,Mark
