Determining scan results after using "System File Checker"

After running Avast, it found an infection, "INI: Shortcut-inf [Trj]. Avast has it named as: PC Pitstop.url. Location: C:\Users\Gary\Favorites. I then quarantined it.

After that, I ran System File Checker, and it reported that no integrity violations were found. Is it safe to say that the file can now be deleted?

Preferred Solution: Determining scan results after using "System File Checker"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Determining scan results after using "System File Checker"

Those two scans really have nothing to do with each other.

And based on what you posted Avast is just finding a bookmark/favorite to a website called PC Pitstop that it wants to remove. It's simply a shortcut to a website so you absolutely can delete it if you want.

I really need some help here, guys! What am I doing wrong? I'm unable to run System File Checker (SFC). It generates the following text no matter how I try to execute the command (paraphrasing):

SFC is checking the integrity of your system files, this may take a few minutes....
(pauses 2-3 seconds)
SFC cannot run since System Recovery has repair(s) pending. Please restart the system to allow the repair(s) to complete.
(returns control to command prompt)
I can get the exact wording if it would help. Anyway, I have one disk with two partitions, the 100MB boot partition, and a ~450GB system partition; the former is active. I've run the command using every possible switch(es). Since I'm running SPC BECAUSE Windows is not starting up fully, I obviously can't run it from within that Windows environment (Win7 Home Premium 64-bit), but I've run it from the Windows System Recovery command prompt and from a Windows retail installation DVD command prompt window. System Recovery previously stated that it believed the problem was from a driver or system file that was recently installed or became corrupt. After MANY, MANY repeated runs through System Recovery, it now says that it finds no problems and windows loads without problem - but nothing has (outwardly) changed whatsoever. I can't get to login screen, just blackness and the mouse cursor after win-logo screen. No waiting for hours or key-combination will do anything at that point.

So what am I doing wrong? One example of many ... Read more

I've been following the tips from these fora quite closely, and it seems that I've narrowed down the problem for my computer to a few corrupt files. But now I've hit a wall--I can't figure out if replacing them would work and where to get a good copy of these files, and also, what are these files, other than the fact that they are startup files.

Symptom: Computer initially froze after a full problem free boot, could not open any programs. Thought may have been a problem with downloaded programs (a week ago) so uninstalled them. Computer continued to freeze, would erratically not boot in safe mode, or hang in the middle of safe mode reboot. Initially could not run system file checker till ran msconfig and hid all non MS services.

This is the log after running sfc: it says it cannot repair some files, and the sfcdetails.txt says:

I'm new to this forum. I saw a few threads regarding the System File Checker Tool. As my computer has crashed recently, I decided to use the System File Checker Tool to fix corrupted windows files.

The results stated that there are corrupted files but it can't fix some of them. I went to look through the CBS log but I didn't find any lines that stated it couldn't repair the file. I run the tool 3 times.

I've attached the CBS log file. Please help. Thank you!

Hello gibernau,

Welcome to Seven forums for starters. I would like to add some suggestions in this case. When SFC scan locates corruption
and states that it can not fix some of the corruption. In good practice is to run a check disk on the Mach. to
further address the issues the system is experiencing.
Check disk can be performed in the following manner(s):

Quick Link to Steps: ( Via windows explorer)
Disk Check

Under Command Line:
In Start menu> under search for programs or files:
Type CMD> cmd.exe will appear above in the Search>right click
and in the drop down Menu choose Run As Administrator>
Allow through UAC(User Account Control) Windows Command line will Appear.
There at the Flashing Cursor Please type chkdsk (space) /r
and tap Enter. it will advise of the type of file system running (NTFS)
as well as inform the system is in use and can not perform Task.
In a moment after it will ask to perform this task at the next reboot
y/n tap y then enter. it will advise that the system will checked next time the system starts.
close out CMD and reboot the computer. the chkdsk will start on its own
(*note to cancel at start ) tap any Key with in the count down timer to resume booting to Windows.
this will check the disk for errors 5/5 will be performed/
depending on issue and speed of Mach. could take up to an hour or more.

See how that works on the issue you are having.

I've refreshed the MBR and run Fixboot at the command prompt.

I've run the special command to run sfc called sfc enable on Win7 where it normally runs on XP.

A few weeks ago a techie friend tidied up my Vista laptop. Coincidentally a few days later, when I switched on my desktop (windows7) all my documents had disappeared. I reinstalled from a backup.
I do think this must be a coincidence.
However I now find that after working on the desktop for a while, clicking Start and then Control Panel or Computer result in a explorer.exe "System Failled Call" window appearing.
Restarting clears this but it happens again.
I have scanned with AVG & windows defender and also used the microsoft system scan tool. Nothing untoward showed up.
Attempted a system restore but no luck as it wouldn't work.
I ran Task manager, killed explorer.exe, went back into task manager, new task and typed "explorer.exe". This has worked for the moment.
Finally each time I close down I get the message programs are still running tho' none are listed. My only option is to force closedown. I feel these problems are all related.

Incidentally, when another user logged in their closedown was clean.
Very confused. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Clicking Start, Control panel/computer results in "System Call Failed"

I first would create a new Restore Point. Then I would go to MSCONFIG via WinKey--R and either disable some startup items or select Diagnostic Startup. If these stop the problem then focus on what is enabled in a full boot - including non-MS services on the Services tab of MSCONFIG.

I am trying to get BGInfo to use custom fields with the WMI Query to hide the network adapters not in use from showing "none" many times on the screen.
I have used the following query:
IP  Address
WMI Class: Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration   Class Property: IPAddress
WMI Query:
SELECT IPAddress FROM Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration WHERE IPEnabled=True AND NOT description LIKE "%VMware%" AND NOT description LIKE "%Virtual%"
After using this custom field and deleting the default IP Address field, the results show properly during the current session.  After rebooting the computer, the IP Address field shows correctly the IP Address for 5 seconds then changes to <IP Address>
after the network card initializes or something else happens to it.
Would someone please help to offer advice how to make this change permanent so the IP address displays properly.

I was infected with the Antivirus System Pro virus. This caused porn pop-ups, fake error messages, fake virus-protection software, etc.

I installed MBAM, which immediately solved all of the worst problems.

However, there is still one specific issue that I cannot get rid of. When I use a search engine (Google or Yahoo), it returns strange and inaccurate results: random travel websites, medication ads, yellowpages.com, just weird stuff that has no relevance to my search. This happens in either Firefox or IE. It happens whenever I use the toolbar search box, but not when I type my search directly into Google.com

The "Idle-time Full System Scan" in Norton 360 v4 is bogging down my computer constantly, and there is no option to turn it off in "Automatic Tasks".

I contacted Norton and (after several attempts to find someone at Norton who could understand what I just said above and getting "hung-up" on over Norton chat. Inexcusable!!!) I was able to get a hold of a technician who told me that Norton intentionally removed this option "for security reasons, because they didn't want people turning it off".

The problem is, people will then be forced to turn it off by turning off ALL scheduled tasks (under "Settings/Scheduling/Schedule:Manual Schedule") and that is an even worse security problem than the relatively small one that would be created by turning off idle-time full system scanning.

Once the system has completed a full system scan, all files are on-access scanned anyway, so running a full system scan every 3-4 days is rather silly and extremely annoying--especially, because it will continue to try to run every time the system is idle if you cancel it.

A warning urging the user to not turn off idle-time full system scans without fully understanding the risks, and after explaining the risks, would be VERY preferable. Or at least the option to run the full system scans when the system is idle on a certain day of the month/week! The schedule for idle-time full system scans really needs to be separate from other tasks. In fact, t... Read more

I suggest first before doing anymore repairs you need to make a backup of all your important data so as not to lose it.

Then using startup repair option at F8 option choose choose the windows installation by highlightlng and choose next go to cmd prompt and type: chkdsk /r press enter

I am here to ask you guys, Is there any possibility to make an entry in the start-up items for "Scan for hardware changes" in windows 8.1 or not. If Yes, please give me the solution.

My Laptop configuration is

It was running OK, but getting a bit old and a bit slow. I upgraded to a W7 desktop, but wanted to keep this one playing around with.

Ran System Recovery 2 or 3 times using the Alt-F10 method. First time, I wanted to avoid loading bloatware so ran msconfig early on, went to Startup to uncheck Acer Launch and stuff like that. Windows Update worked until SP1. Just couldn't get SP1 to install, including when I downloaded it from the web.

Then I ran System Recovery and let the bloatware run. It stalled at 9/11. Again, Windows Update worked until SP1.

Then I tried System Recovery using discs, instead of Alt-F10. It failed for some reason. I have a couple other System Recovery discs from an laptop and an eMachine laptop. I tried them with the same result. Recovery starts, writes over the C drive, then fails.

The message is:
The system registry contains invalid file paths. Installation cannot proceed. This system image was applied without guaranteeing that drive-letter assignments would match across computers.

So now I'm stuck.

I googled the error message, but generally ended up in discussion boards that are over my head. I think I saw some discussion about partition. A:Vista System Recovery failure - "system registry contains invalid file paths" - canno

The vista image extracts to the temporary drive letter D.

If you use a regular installation dvd and MS standard setup.exe, it will fix the os registry letter correctly. (Defaults to the first letter i.e. C as A and B are reserved for floppies )

If you are trying to restore from a factory image, you will have trouble because there is now another os on the machine.

I have a script I use for it.

You could get it to work , but it is a lot of mucking around.

It is just easier to use a Vista install dvd ( not the same as your factory recovery image ), boot it up, and install to your desired partition.

Repeated attempts through the same process seems to move the folders, but the errors increase as the concentration of stubborn folders increases.

There are no event viewer logs corresponding to these errors. (eventvwr.msc: system, or application)

I would have thought this would be a common problem, but extensive searches came up with nothing... so either it is rare, untroubling to others, extremely easy to fix, or my search queries suck. =)
I am going to run Checkdisk to make sure all is well there, and I will repost the likely failure.

A:"Error moving file or folder" "directory is not empty" one file left

Occasionally when I am deleting a file, it is difficult, I have to go through process explorer, search for the thread that is strangely(?) associated with that file in explorer (no reasonable dependencies could be linked, nor is the file being viewed), and kill the thread before deletion.

any thoughts?

Thanks =)

System - Windows 7 Home Premium - 64 bit
After Mcafee scan shows: 2 "unresolved issues". They are 1. Generic PUP.x!ct 2. Generic PUP.z!ca. Mcafee says under "potentially unwanted programs" that they were "unable to delete" these malware programs. What are they and are they harmful to my system? How do I remove them if necessary? I am a bit of a novice so thanks for the help. THX, SK

A:"Generic PUP.z!ca" & "Generic PUP.x!ct" Mcafee - "unable to delete" after scan

Hi there.

Those are most probably false positives. What files are being detected as such?

When something is labeled "Generic" it means that McAfee doesn't know what it is but that it looks like something else it knows about.

Hey Friends,

I guess its not only me having this, is it? Many of us have it right? so whats the thing which brings up this dialog box > Scan and Fix /or/ Continue without scanning > when you connect an external device to your computer?
i had some time some bad day of mine when i clicked on the Scan and Fix and the result was the windows converted a very large number of my files into .CHK files hidden in the HDD!! and i still cannot find a way to recover those most most important files of mine (they are text files). I did recover a large bundle of files, but not the ones i actually needed more than anything! those text files. i have gone through literally 30,000 files and recovered almost everything > videos, movies, images, and messed up bits of large installation files of softwares like AE broken down to many many small pieces... but that doesnt matter! that stuff can be recovered (softwares and movies and songs) but the text files are still among those .CHK files i have which are still more than 10,000.

Anyone have anything regarding this is more than Welcome to share their Knowledge.

Hi all
Previously the  "Save Picture"  box would put a web generated title in the box and automatically selected JPEG.  Now the title box reads "untitled" and the only file options offered are "png" & "bmp"

Please note that a similar post has appeared, but the solution did not match the fault.  I'm seeking to restore the automatic response to save picture, that might have been upset by antivirus clean-up programme.

Thank youin advance for considering my problem

how can I change this?

Some background - this may not be the issue I need to solve at the end of the day:

I believe the location is causing crashes, since I blew up lots of Library registry values (in an attempt to remove them from the OS), and I think it defaults to the library page.

eg, 2shared - file upload and sharing
[edit: stupid editor auto href'd the text... bah]

crashes IE and Firefox (not Chrome for some reason... possibly because it uses its own code?) when I click the browse button (same for any "browse" button that spawns a native find-your-file thing).

It may be something else, but anyway...

edit: If I disable "Expand to Current Folder" in Win Explorer, the crash does not occur. So perhaps it is trying to expand to a folder that is broken?
I want to keep "Expand to Current Folder" on, though, as I like the feature.

A:Default "Browse for file" location in web browser "choose file" box

Hello Silmeria,

It may be best to do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before you blew up the registry to see if that may sort this for you. Afterwards, you could use the tutorial below instead to remove libraries without blowing up the registry like that.

Libraries Folder - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane

Hope this helps,

I don't know if this belongs on this forum. I am trying to back up files onto a DVD and also delete files from same DVD, using Roxio. I keep getting a message saying that " is a system file and if i delete it one or more programs might not work. Then asking do i want to go ahead. If I don't go ahead, I can't copy or delete files. I can't detect any " in my file titles or anything. What should I do?
Thanks, people.

A:What to do about " "is a system file" with Roxio

It might help to know what the file or files is/are but it probably is a system file and a proper warning but since its taking place on the DVD its ok to go ahead because in that location its not going to affect function one way or another as long as the original file remains intact at its location on the system.

I'm hoping for a little help with a curious problem I'm having. Spyware Doctor keeps finding "Block-Checker" as 12 infections;fixing them then seems to cause 6 items to have protection disabled against them in Spyware Blaster. It's acting like a False Positive but what I can't understand is the Items that become Protection-Disabled being flagged as Block-Checker. Not sure what's wrong. Below are 1) the items that become Protection-Disabled in Blaster 2) a SpywareDoctor report - that only finds Block-Checker again when I re-enable protection for those six items in Blaster and 3) a HJT report just in case. Appreciate any help as always- Thanks in Advance!

Info: Ad-Aware,Spybot and Microsoft Anti-Spyware don't flag anything but cookies and usage tracks whether those items are protected in Blaster or not. I have not run MSN Messenger which came pre-installed for months and did not knowingly download the Block-Checker application. I have uninstalled MSN and Windows Messenger. AVG and Freedom Anti-Virus also are clean. In the third post down I describe new developments.

Recently "SpywareDoctor," which I am running in the trial mode, indicated that "Block-Checker" has infected my system. None of my other spyware security programs indicate that it is present. However, when I go into the Registry per the path "SD" gives, I do find the entries.

I found this free removal program- "BlockRemove" - at http://jayloden.com/block-checker.htm. Has anyone had experience with it?

Is there an explanation for why "SD" finds "Block-Checker" whereas four other programs of repute do not? I am suspicious!

I do not engage in instant messaging of any kind, and I do not employ Internet Explorer as my browser.

Many thanks for helpful comment and advice. {redoak}

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I have a Dell 2330 all-in-one running Win7 64 bit.

I'm trying to do a system image back up to a USB3 external hard drive. The image will take up about 333gb and I have about twice that amount of space left on the 1 TB drive.

I get the error message: System cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)

I've looked through this forum and found a suggestion that I use the SFC command to repair possibly corrupted files. Two questions:

1. Is this the best way to proceed or should I try something else?

2. Will the SFC alter changes I've made in the registry to slightly modify my keyboard.

Many thanks.

Hi Mark Bacon,

You can check the below link for resolving this issue if you do not wish to run SFC to fix this issue:

Error message when you try to restore from a full backup of a Windows Vista-based computer: "The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)"

Also, when you run SFC, files critical to restart Windows that do not match the expected Windows version may be replaced with the correct versions. If a file is repaired, the corresponding registry data is also repaired. Protected files not critical to restart Windows are not repaired.

So, it would be advisable to make a backup of the registry before you run SFC. Please try the steps and let us know if it helps.

XP Home (installed SP2 recently, which MIGHT have something to do with this?).

Just saved two word docs and a bmp file, all separately. All three times I saw that a new location has been added to the Save As drop-down menu. It didn't open to My Documents folder but was in the general folder list of the whole computer. The location was called "FTP File Locations." It's never appeared on the Save As menu before. This made me think of the file/print sharing control, which is now located in the Windows Firewall, but I don't use that Firewall, I turned it off to use Norton. What was FTP Locations? And is there any way to disable file/print sharing without using the Windows Firewall? (These may be the same thing, I don't know.) Also, in Network Connections, I thought I'd find file/print sharing control there, but now XP wants me to run a whole Network Wizard thing..I'm afraid I'll somehow set up a network instead! or enable all kinds of things..I don't want to create a disaster here.

(My son installed an FTP program months ago for work he was doing, but the program was removed. I just searched for it, it's definitely gone.)

This is a stand-alone, non-networked home computer.

P.S. I saved another Word doc and now it's back to opening to My Documents folder as usual..now I can't find the FTP Locations anywhere.

When I plugin an external USB hard disc or USB stick it appears that Windows 7 pops up a dialog window asking me:

"Do you want to scan and fix removable disc?"

After reading a while in Internet I saw two methods for disabling these popups:

1.) Disabling service "Shell Hardware detection"

2.) enabling "Turn off Autoplay" in gpedit.msc

Whats the difference?

I want be sure that if I plugin a new USB device (like an USB stick or USB printer or USB hard disc) this USB hardware IS successfuly detected and joined by Windows 7.

So I can imagine that the first method is too brutal because it prevents inclusion of new USB devices

Is this correct?

If yes: Why is it recommended so often for avoiding the popup?

A:Disable popup "Do you want to scan and fix remov.device""? 2 methods?

You get that message because Windows detects something wrong with the file system on the device. This can happen if the device was unplugged without "Safely Removing Hardware", and a transfer was not complete.

The methods you mention just mask the problem.

You can let Windows scan and fix the drive, choose: fix file system errors.
or, do a full format on the drive, not the quick format.
Or, run Chkdsk /f X: manually, X = the problem drive letter, you may have to run it more than once.

It is always a good idea to move all data off the drive first, then copy it back after the fix is complete. This also fixes bad file problems that can contribute to the error.

The drive probably has it's "Dirty Bit" set. This is a single Hex value that tells Windows the file system is no good. Chkdsk and formatting will often reset the dirty bit, but sometimes not on the first attempt.

To see if the dirty bit is set:
Open a command prompt > Start > type: cmd > right-click on Command Prompt and choose “Run as administrator”
and then type:
fsutil dirty query x:
(substitute the letter "x" with the drive letter that is giving you problems)

If the dirty bit is set you will get a message that "Volume X is DIRTY".

Keep running chkdsk /r , or chkdsk /f /r until the dirty bit clears.

Are such proprietary programs necessary for WINXP? If so, I wonder why Microsoft does not include one on the installation CD (maybe it does?). The proprietary programs run $39.95 per year which is OK if such software is necessary and cannot be duplicated from within WinXP. Is it necessary? If so what is a good one?

However, everyone is agreed that before going down this route - should
one choose to - a full back-up beforehand is vital.

How can I make it such that in Search Results, when I open a folder in a new window (by right-clicking a file), I will be directed to a window with the "full path" displayed in the address bar, instead of Search Results\"Path" or Search Results>"Path"?
Edit: "Right-click -> open file location" will open the file location and have the full address displayed. But that doesn't solve the problem if I have more than one result that I need to go to and check.

A:Open a new window with "full path" instead of Search Results\"Path"

See if this works, from the control panel, click on Folder options > View tab > check the box that says "Display the full path in the title bar" (classic theme only)
