Q: HP Pavilion 15 - Weak wifi signal from Broadcom card but USB...

Hi I have a new HP Pavilion 15-po78sa Notebook, Product number: J5B65EA#ABU, running Windows 8.1 64-bit The Wifi card is a Broadcom BCM43142 802.11 bgn. I'm getting only 1 bar signal strength but all other devices in the house (laptop, ipad, nexus) have a full strength signal. I tried a Samsung USB wifi adaptor & I'm getting full signal strength with this. I updated the drivers for the Broadcom card but there's no difference.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: HP Pavilion 15 - Weak wifi signal from Broadcom card but USB...

Hi, I am having exactly the same problem.I recently bought a laptop HP Pavilion 15, product number J1Z18EA#ABZ, running Windows 8.1 64 bit with a Broadcom BCM43142 802.11 bgn WiFi adapter. My modem is barely 3 feet away and the signal strength is 1 bar. My mobile phone (Nexus 5), the iPad and my other laptop (an old HP running Windows 7) are showing full strength (or at least 4 out of 5 bars). All the drivers are up to date and nothing changed. How can we fix this? regardsfilippo

Hi,

Before we do any troubleshooting, one thing you can try to do if you have not already tried is restarting your router. Also, is this happening to any other devices in your home?

I have had a HP 255 G4 since february and in the past few weeks no matter where I am in the house the computer will either get one bar of wifi signal or no signal at all, normally I would get a full signal no matter where I was in the house. I have other computers such as a msi gaming laptop as well and this has no issue where ever it is in the house. I ran a test on the laptop by connecting it to my iPhone's personal hotspot and placed it right next to it and it still struggled to maintain a one bar connection again. My HP is still covered under it's one year warranty how do I get it booked in for repair cause it is not my wifi provider that is the cause of the issue.

Welcome to the HP Forum, Rascal. Discussion on the Subject of Signal Strength Bars by themselves can be somewhat meaningless, UNLESS you can interpret the definition of what each "bar" indicates. Signals are affected by the type of router you have - routers are NOT equal. The less expensive router might lack the support necessary for the best performance of the wireless card in your computer. Example: An older router that only supports 802.11g is not going to provide faster than 54Mbps -- even if you have the best card you can buy in your computer. The opposite can be true as well - a good router cannot provide better service than the computer's wireless can support.Example:  If the card in your computer is 802.11g, then even if you have a Router capable of speeds upwards of 300Mbps, you are only going to get 54Mbps. The speed and range are limited by the weakest link in the chain.  802.11n is faster than the "g", but it too can be slowed down by walls, metal furniture, and other obstructions.  Moving your equipment, even a few inches, might make the difference to a 802.11g routerANDThe same might be true for an 802.11n router that has a weak (underpowered) antenna Antennas in routers are NOT equal.  Weak antennas in fancy routers can still equal a whimpy router.  You want a router with a 5db to 7db antenna (or better if they make such by the time you read this).  Assuming you purchased the b... Hello fellow windows 7 users,

I hope you don't mind helping me with an issue I have been having.

Let me explain my situation. A couple years ago, my dad bought a wireless router. For some reason, the signal on it was very weak. We tried tweaking the settings, but no results were produced. We then proceeded to buy another router, in case the one we had was a lemon, it wasn't. Same results from this one too. Then, when we made the switch from TWC to AT&T, we acquired yet another router, which is the one we currently have. We hoped that it was our service provider that was giving us the weak signal, but with AT&T it is exactly the same. We are stumped as to why this is so.

We live in a one story house, and by the time I get to my garage, where I have my brand new Xbox setup, I either get 1 or 0 bars. So it is impossible for me to use the live points I just paid $50 for.

Our router is in a cabinet, but I assume that doesn't make too much of a difference because so is our neighbors, and I get a full 3 bars from their wifi IN MY HOUSE.

So anyways, I would greatly appreciate any input any of you may have as to why we are unable to get a solid strong wifi signal. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

***PS: I am going to go to sleep now as it is rather late, but I am going to check this thread after I get back from school tomorrow, or before school if I have the time. Sorry ***

Hi Perhaps you can see the strength of the signal using inSSIDer to gauge how strong it is.  Mine is the Blue one, which tells me it is a strong transmission that is being rec'd.  I have a good internal aeriel. There is possibly a power setting for the card... You could visit www.ceeandbeetee.uk and read thru some of the pages, and copy netfix.bat and run it on you own machine, modifying as required. If in doubt please ask.

How far are you from the wifi accesspoint? If the wifi came preinstalled on the device. Who is the manufacturer and what is the model number of your laptop? What is the manufacturer and model of the Gateway you are using for your network? Is it your ISP's that you rent it from, or did you purchase the Gateway?

I need to amplify the signal of wireless internet. I heard about access points, but I don't really know what to look for. Something that will receive a wireless signal, then boost it back out. Any ideas for a cheap/quality way to do this? email is "[email protected]"

A:Weak wifi internet signal. Access points?

access point/router/gateway/switches are all ways to tie multiple computers together to share files/internet.

distance, walls/construcion, upstairs/downstairs, how strong the signal is, how many pc's/laptops, all play a part in how well it works as you're sharing the same bandwidth.

i keep it to about 100 ft or less from the signal to the pc/laptop.

The signal is very weak, 1-2 levels, but the pc adapter can be 7-8meters max from the router.
Also the speed, while other pcs get 25mbs, this one 3-6. Three days ago it had 25mbs, cuz we changed channel and its the same now. Weird...

Can something be interrupting the signal or what can be the problem? Im really out of ideas, i will be really thankful for all who can help.

Hi,

I need some help with Win7 wifi. I'm trying to create an ad-hoc wifi network between my Windows 7 laptop (Toshiba c650) and my samsung wave y handset. My wifi card is atheros-AR9285. When I connect to this network from my wifi, connectivity is established, but with some problems:

[1] It takes a long time for the ad-hoc network to show in the network-and-sharing centre.

[2] The signal strength is most of the time weak with just one bar visible (though my handset sits just besides my laptop. Do you think it could be conflicting with my neighbour's access-point with much higher signal strength?)

[3] The handset is assigned an IP in the range of 169.254.*, but when I ping this address from DOS, I get the error "PING: transmit failed. General failure.". I even tried to assign a static IP to my handset, but when connected, it automatically changes to 169.254.* range. What could be the issue here ?

Cheers,

Have you tried using the connectify software for this?

Your Hotspot, Your Way - Connectify

It should work with any Windows 7 certified driver to create a secondary access point from your machine. It uses the Microsoft Virtual WiFi miniport adaptor for this which should install with your Windows 7 certified wireless driver. You should be able to see it there in Device Manager under Network connections.

Hello all, I've a problem with my new HP Pavilion 15-bj000nh notebook, purchased few days ago.The wi-fi connection is too weak, if I keep the PC one meter far from router I get only 3-4 bars of 5 in the connection properties and if I go just 10 meters and a pair of rooms far I get 1-2 bars of 5 and frequent disconnections. Also the speed degrades I see, and close to the router too is not at maximum.Otherwise, my old HP 6735s notebook with Windows 7, had never problems in the same position (10 m) and keep 3-4 bars without disconnections. I verified the strength of wi-fi router with cell phone too (no problem), I already tried all the solutions suggested by the HP support assistant on PC and on the HP support site too, but without any results... I upgreaded the software of the Broadcom card (802.11n). IT helped a bit, but even with the newest software, my laptop has the connectivity problems. I cannot believe that a new NB can have a so weak connection... I have no other ideas different from an HW fault...Thanks for your help.

No wireless card will work well with only a single antenna, and a dual band (2.4 and 5 ghz) will not work at all on one antenna... An antenna lead can be added but it takes almost complete disassembly. I doubt the Service Center would do it. I wish there were something I could tell you. A usb wireless dongle is actually your best option. 15 bucks on amazon.com and you will have good reception at the cost of losing access to one usb port.

Yooooo! I have a Lenovo Y510p with modified BIOS so I could replace the crappy Intel wireless card that came with it (Intel Centrino N2230) for an Azurewave - Broadcom 4352. The experience has been good so far, the only problem I'm having is the low wireless signal with the card. I have other laptops that have higher range and strengths on the same place with older cards.

I've tried verifying (and even swapping) the cables and noted no difference. I asked on another forum and they told me that it could be that the card is not receiving enough power, but I have yet to find a settings in the BIOS or in Windows that dwindles its performance. I have recently updated the driver from Lenovo's website and it didn't improve a bit.

Any suggestions to improve the wireless signal? Thanks.

Hi, I've been experiencing something weird with my Wifi connectivity. Ill try to explain as best I can, I'm on a PC desktop running windows 7 and there are basically two ways I've been using to connect to my router:

A. Network card that's connected to my motherboard, specifically the Linksys WMP600N Wireless N PCI Adapter
B. Tethered connection - I hop on the wireless using my Macbook Pro, then allow sharing of connection through ethernet line and connect it to my PC. My Macbook is then placed on top of my PC so the location is essentially the same.

Using method A the connection can get very shaky, as an example there are times when this connection gets really slow ie. sometimes my game connection will slow drastically just from loading pandora, or even a web page. Other times it is just slow in general.

If I switch to method B it becomes a completely different world, not only is the game showing me a faster connection (20-25ms vs anywhere from 20-100 average using method A), I can be streaming netflix and browsing a web page at the same time and it won't be affected.

So my question is, what about setup A can be improved or what is causing it to have such drastic difference in connection speed? I don't want to stay on a tethered connection so I want to figure out the issue, is it something with the setup? Maybe I just need a better network card? If so, what kind of card am I looking for that can avoid this problem? Also the macbook pro I have... Read more

would anyone know why an access point is not giving any signal outside the room. its an old linksys model but its signal doesnt go beyond 15 metrs.
well it is sort of... it nearly dies in signal strength near the end of the room.
the device is LinkSys WAP11..........

A:Weak AP signal

First question: what operating distance does Linksys specify for this device?

There are many reasons that could be the cause of the signal not leaving the room (e.g., the materials in the walls prevent signals, other external interference, etc.) However, if it is struggling to make it across a small, empty room, it could be equipment failure on one of the ends. Have you done any hardware troubleshooting such as trying another access point or computer in the room to see if one of those items fixes the problem?

I am working on a ladie's laptop and I have just taken advantage of the free upgrade to 8.1. Her original complaint is the connection to the internet is unstable. I did notice that she is using the guest account of the assisted care facility she is living in. That account is sometimes less than the full five bars strengh. I thionk that may be part of her problem because when I take it to my apartment where my router is, there is no problem using my wi-fi.
Question 1. Will a signal booster help if installed in her apartment? If so any recommendations?

I confirmed the installation of the update to 8.1 using Belarc Advisor. The same tiles displayed when the update completed. I thought there was a way to make the interface more user friendly. I, also, thought that was the reson for 8.1.
Question 2. What do I do next? Any tutorials?

I just posted this and it was closed. I am paying for wireless it's a shared connection, hence we share the cost. I wasn't aware that wasn't allowed...
My neighbor and I share wireless internet access. Our homes are about 100 feet apart. This works fine for internet browsing, but when it comes to playing online multiplayer games it lags like crazy. The Connection status is "low" with a speed of 11-24 Mbps. What's the problem? Is the signal cutting in and out because of the distance? If so is there anything I could by to strengthen the signal within my home without paying for a second wireless subscription?

Thanks

you will almost certainly find within the small print of the ISP contract that this is not allowed

Hi guys,

So i just got my new Asus G71-Q2 laptop and i love it so far the only thing is that i only get internet downstairs and even though upstairs is where my old pc and xbox are and they get excellent reception when i get none to very little. I was wondering if there is some settings i should mess with on my new laptop or what. I can connect down stairs pretty well there is some spots where i cant that are right below where my room is but i am still not sure why the upstairs computer would get it and not the new one. I have a netgear wpn824 router hooked up to a 2wire modem. any thoughts or ideas would be great appreciated

Not every WiFi card has an equally good antenna. Buy a card for your laptop.

I'm going to have to close this one. This is against the terms of service for the ISP, I suggest you pay for your own access.

Your case appears to be that there are three wireless networks, all running on channel 6. Try changing to channel 1 or 11 on your router and see if that doesn't help.

Hi? just bought a Netcomm wireless router 5540 and seem to have connected ok to wifes laptop using a Belkin 11g card.
The problem is that the signal is weak less than 10 metres away (4 rooms). The internet connection drops out.
But if I move it closer the signal is strong. How can I boost the signal? I thought it would work for much longer distances.

:giddy:

A:Weak signal 10 metres!

got 2.4GHz phones or other wireless devices in the house? Microwave oven close by? Maybe its the building materials of the walls. Anytime the signal has to pass through or bounce off an obstable such as a wall, it will lose strength. Some objects such as softwoods(like pine) will actually absorb part of the signal and result in greater loss.

Other than that, maybe its the Belkin card. Belkin is one of the lowest quality manufacturers of wireless equipment(which is why they are usually so much cheaper than the others).

My wifi signal has become much weaker than what it used to be on my laptop (Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q701). From both my workplace and my home (so different routers. Ones an N and other is G) my signal has went from being great, to not being able to connect from just 2 rooms away so it's not the routers or interference from other devices as I've checked that and tried changing the channels. My cell phone can pick up my wifi much better than my laptop can now.It will read out at 70 dBm on my cell phone when my laptop won't even be able to pick up a signal. Any ideas on the matter?

I'm not positive, but I know it happened sometime close to when I upgraded from windows Vista to Windows 7, but I have the latest driver for it. I can't place right when this happened because most of the time I'm within one room of the router so it still ran.

I live in a three level townhose with people living in units to the left and right of me. My Verizon Fios wireless router resides on the third floor, where the cable connection is. I have that as my office and have most of my equipment hard wired to the router. Problem is when I use my media center PC or laptop on the second floor. I get an extremly weak wireless signal. I tried to attach a new D-link 655 N router to the fios router, and turn off the wireless on the verizon router. It worked really good, but anything wireless could not talk to anything hard wired, and vice virca. I set all the equipment onto the new router and shut off the DNS,DHCP and gateway from the verizon router and only used it as an internet access. Im a systems admin by trade, and Im completly baffled at what could be wrong. Ive since put everything back and dis connected the D-link router and now everything is happy again. But, Im back to the weak wireless signal. Any suggestions would be great and thanks.

Try the following configuration for the secondary router.
Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

For reference, here's a link to a Typical example config using a... Read more

Well i decided to just reform my laptop to out-of-box state instead of uninstalling the network adapters and going through more hassle.

Now i have the main dsl connection on it. But my internet on my desktop keeps falling or going slow. Is there anything i can do with my router to "open" anything that might be holding it back from giving me a better wireless connecton? I use to be going much much faster before. now i dl @ around 60kb's.. Maybe theres a program out there for this?

Thanks for any help techguy!

Is this just because the router is far away from the computer? Have you changed channels on the router?

My network interface card has recently come into some problems. The connection drops all the time, and for a good amount of time tonight it's been off completely. I will bullet point the info for ease of access.
The network card has had a decent signal for a long time, and has recently (past few months) been degrading in signal quality/uptime.
The plastic on the antennae has been broke for a while, but this hasn't seemed to change signal quality
Sometimes the connection goes off completely, sometimes the connection is incredibly weak, sometimes it's perfectly fine. The times of when the connection dips or goes off seems completely random, sometimes when there are more people using the connection, it will actually be better.
The connection is very unstable, it's very rare that I get a full day of good quality connection.
I've set up a wireless hotspot with my phone, putting the phone right next to the router. My PC was able to connect to my phone, but not my router.
Other people are able to connect to the router when I'm not.

Here's what I've done so far:
Restarted the router.
Unconnected and reconnected the wired connection between the router and the line.
Restarted the network adapter many times.
Flushed the DNS.
Reset the IP config.
Reinstalled drivers.

Could it be that my interface card as just packed in? I think something is wrong internally and it's not picking up weaker signals very well. But saying that, it was able ... Read more

I have 3 computers sharing the connection from my 2Wire modem/gateway. The modem is in my room upstairs; the 2nd computer is in the kitchen downstairs, and the 3rd is in the basement. There are obviously floors and walls in-between. The kitchen computer is fine but the basement's signal is weak to none.
Does this mean I have to move the modem to the kitchen pc? Or can I boost the signal at all? The kitchen pc is very old and slow so I don't really think it should be the "hub"; it's running XP and the other 2 are running VIsta. Also, the kitchen pc would need an extension cord.

All of the sudden the wireless signal is either extremely weak (can't even connect) or just gone, while the wired connection to the router is fine. All I know is it's a Linksys router and nothing was done to it, no power hits or anything. They've taken the encryption down and it still either is weak or not there when it comes to wireless. I can't look at the computer and get specific details as it's not where I am, this is all I was told...any ideas? Their router is about two years old, has it just maybe gone bad?

A:Wireless Signal Weak/Gone

Power cycle the router and the modem a few times. The off cycle should last for 10 minutes or more.
