Inital setup of Carbon X1 6th Gen - 20KH

Q: Inital setup of Carbon X1 6th Gen - 20KH

Finally received new purchase. Started initial setup but didn't have on hand info being requested so I simply closed the laptop assuming when I gathered info I could simply continue with setup. However, when I opened up the laptop again, the inital setup process was no longer available. Can anyone tell me the name to search on the new laptop to restart the initial setup?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,  I have a brand new X1 Carbon laptop and I can't for the life of me get the HDMI to connect. Drivers have all been updated and Thunderbolt Controller 15D2 does show up in my list of devices (this was the fix from a previous forum post). My other laptops connect immediately through HDMI, yet this brand new machine is not recognized. What am I missing?

Since getting the machine, I've not been able to use the integrated microphone array at all. It is enabled, and I've given the apps I've tried the permission to use it. Both external USB-mic and headphones with integrated mic with 3.5mm plug work. I've tried downloading and reinstalling the Realtek driver from the support pages. No help. What to do? Using up to date Windows. April update did not help either.  ----(As a side note since I couldn't find a place to give feedback: it would be nice if the Pro Dock would stop crashing. Or at least would recover without removing the power cord. And I'm pretty sure that at the time I ordered the order page said that an ethernet adapter was included. No such luck. And the integrated on the chip fingerprint reader recognizes me maybe one time out of ten. I originally thought that it was broken, but I guess it just doesn't like me.)

The factory preload used by the Lenovo Digital Download Recovery Service (DDRS) for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Machine Type 20KH,20KG with the English language Win10PROx64 operating system is outdated and will not result in a factory-state installation --unless your machine was manufactured at the beginning of 2018. My ThinkPad X1 Carbon Lenovo, manufactured on 6/23/2018, came with Windows 10 Pro Version 1803 (OS build 17134.81) and Lenovo Vantage. I created a Lenovo Recovery USB Key after downloading all the files from the Lenovo Digital Download Recovery Service (DDRS) as indicated. The recovery process installed Windows 10 Pro Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.547) and Lenovo Companion. While examining the files in the Lenovo Recovery USB Key, I found a filed name "VALUES.TXT" which dates the factory preload to "2018/01/26". This may matter because it has been reported that excessive fan noise and excessive CPU speed issues were related to certain settings in factory preloads based on Windows 10 Version 1709. Moreover, some end-users have reported that they continued to face similar issues after running "PowerConfigurationPatch.exe?. Be it as it may, Lenovo should provide end-users with the latest factory preload.

Hi and thanks in advance to anyone with any assistance they may offer in helping me clean up my reinstalled OS and any viruses or general slowdowns. I just restored XP to it's original settings as my computer would have random shut-downs. It seems to have helped as I haven't experienced anything in 2 or 3 days. It seems to me I've got a lot of junk, doubles, etc. on my computer. I'd love to be able to tighten up my HD (and keep it that way) so I don't run into this again. Muchas Gracias!

I have recently purchased a 6th gen x1 carbon. It is the model with a 512gb ssd and 16gb of ram. I am planning a setup for my dorm room that definitely could use some work. There are a lot of peripherals going into this so bear with me. My main question through explaining this is if there is a way to streamline the setup and make it more cost efficient.  I am planning to major buys with this setup, the thinkpad ultradock and an Egpu. Regarding the Egpu, it will be a GTX 1070 mounted in a Razor Core V1. My question is I feel like having both the dock and core is unnecessary. I ideally would like to come into my room and put my X1 straight into the dock, which will be closed and probably upright next to the Egpu. Where I see the problem is that I could just as easily do the setup without the dock and instead plug the Egpu into the TB3 port every time I get home, and simply have the peripherals connected to the Egpu housing. One of the pieces that is making me question the setup is I also intend to have an external SSD that will stay in my room with the Egpu and will store my video games to save space on the internal drive for classes and regular programs. I have been told that the SSD and Egpu cannot share the same port as there would not be enough bandwidth to support the two for how I intend to use it, mostly gaming. So here are a couple questions I would like answered. 1. Should I even bother with the Ultra Dock if I am getting the EGPU2. What would be th... Read more

On initial startup the error message "CMOS BATTERY FAILED" appears. A new (tested) battery has been installed, but the message still shows on startup, and computer boot up hangs at this point. Any fix ?? Or has the mainboard gone bad. This is a Pentium 166, AT power supply. (Yeh, I know, I should "junk it", but it is being reburbished for donation to the East Valley Boy's & Girl's Club). A:Inital boot hang-up

Have you tryed cleaning the contacts where the battery connects to the board. On an older board they could be corroded. Do you have a meter that you can use across the board contacts to be sure the connection is good? Check and see if there is any jumper across two points marked clear cmos. Other than that its probably something shorted on the motherboard.

I am a bit confused by all the full disk encryption methods available between hardware options like OPAL and software/hardware options like Bitlocker for a X1 Carbon Generation 6 thinkpad. I am about to install Windows on a new Samsung 970 EVO 1 TB NVMe SSD that I just installed. I have a number of questions and concerns. 1) The way I typically do backups in the past is to pull the SSD and install it in another desktop computer or enclosure and make an image using Macrium Reflect or other disk imaging software. My understanding is that if a HD Password in the bios is set in the bios of the thinkpad this is not possible and the drive will be inaccessible on another machine. Is this correct? 2) Is setting the HD Password the same as setting the ATA password? Can it be cleared? Can it be disabled? 3) Does using Bitlocker (which I haven't used before) allow the drive to be read on another computer if the HD password in the bios is not set? How much of a speed/CPU hit is likely to be encountered with using Bitlocker? 4) Are there recommended settings for Bitlocker? I haven't used it before. Any gotchas? 5) It looks like the Samsung 970 EVO supports the eDrive 1667 standard which I believe should allow Bitlocker to use the drives hardware encryption engine. Is this correct? Does this cause any portability issues? 6) If Bitlocker is not used it looks like there are two options for password protecting the SSD either the HD password in the bios or using s... Read more

Sorry I'm not sure if this is the right category for this, but I just need some help. I've got a 6 or so month old Toshiba Satellite C50D-A-13G laptop on Windows 8, which had been working perfectly up until yesterday when I turned it on, and for 10 minutes it was stuck on the: 'Toshiba, Leading Innovation' screen with the little loading circle thing going round normally at first, but gradually it would stop and start again, until eventually it went to the 'POWER_DRIVE_STATE_FAILURE' where it said it was collecting data to help it repair itself, but then it restarted and did exactly the same thing again. It either does this or it says 'Preparing Automatic Repair' where it loads for a few seconds and then for a fraction of a second looks normal with a pop up which I assume is normal for automatic repair, but then goes on to a black screen, where I can move the cursor but nothing else. I've tried taking the battery out with the laptop connected to the power cable, and then taking the power cable out and holding down the power button for 1-2 minutes,as has been suggested on other websites, but to no avail. I'd just like to know if there was any sure way of fixing this or if I just need to take it in and get it looked at.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here's the problem:

I am having an issue with a program driver which caused my computer to bluescreen, to make a long story short I need to repair or rollback my system to a previous date.

However, and I've never had this problem before, I can not use my keyboard to boot to CD or to boot to safe mode. It will work on the initial screen where it will check hard drives, etc, Press DEL to enter BIOS. I've entered the BIOS and can move around in there...

After that first screen, the keyboard will become completely unresponsive. I've tried both USB and PS/2 keyboards with no results. Anyway, I can't "press any key to boot to CD" to repair my OS, and I can't enter Safe mode without a keyboard.

I forgot to grab the exact model of Motherboard I'm using, (I'm at work posting this) but I'm pretty sure it's an ABIT SiS type of motherboard. Not sure on the exact model.

The error that occurs when I boot into Windows in regular mode is as follows:

Stop: 0x000000CE (0XF7876E80, 0X00000000, 0XF7876380, 0X00000000)

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I used the 1st gen X1 Carbon for a while and found out that it's very robust and the touch feeling is very good. I guessed that all sides (A+B+C+D) of it are made by carbon fiber. Correct me if I'm wrong. But when I use my X1 Yoga 1st gen, which has only carbon fiber on A side (the cover behind screen) and uses "Super Magnesium" on C+D sides (the cover around keyboard and behind the keyboard), this design bring several problems: 1. " Super Magnesium" is still metal, if you crash it by accident, you may leave a scrath on it permanently, this happens more on edges;2. what's more, the paint at the edge of " Super Magnesium" will be rubbed away with time goes on, and you will see the white metal not the ThinkPad black;3. metal will suffer from deformation by force;4. the D side of my X1 yoga feels loose when you hold it with one hand, which make you feel cheap of this $1500 machine. Thus I hope the next gen of X1 Yoga or X1 Carbon can provide a pure carbon fiber version, for better build quality and user experience. How do you guys think about it?

HiI own a X1 Carbon Gen 2 thinkpad and wonder if it is possible to replace the current keyboard with a X1 Carbon gen 3 keyboard (with proper mouse buttons), or if it will not fit?I have tried to check the manuals and the connectors seems similar although some things, such as the fingerprint reader, seems different. I have no problem "loosing" the adaptive keyboard and fingerprint reader if I can have all the functionality of the keyboard and trackpoint on the new "keyboard" (i.e. the gen 3 frontpanel).

A:X1 Carbon Gen 3 Keyboard on X1 Carbon Gen 2

I am interested in this exact topic as well. Looks like the Gen 3 keyboards lack the adaptive keyboard - that clear stripe on the top that changes. The FRU for these X1 Carbons seem to be the whole keyboard, adaptive part, trackpad and bezel - they go for 150 USD or so. Problem is we don't know if it will work given the model year differences. A nice alternative would be just to replace the trackpoint. They came close with this one, but it is no macbook in terms of tactile feel of the pad. I really am having a hard time with it and it's been about a month.  Lenovo please help!

Hi everybody.
I got dell latitude d800 laptop with dead display and without os (supposed to be XP, sticker is intact).
Hunting for affordable good shape lcd panel will take a while so I made unattended cd with nlite and installed XP but external monitor didn't fire up
I checked the installation with live CD and it looks like complete install so I got an idea that the install is lacking dell drivers particularly video driver (nvidia fx 5200 go card).
Even more: it's possibly lacking any video driver 'cause native display was disconnected.
So I have to somehow inject video driver and force setup to install it. Then XP must fire up external monitor and then I can update all the drivers.
I read about winnt.sif and $OEM$/Drivers directory but that all about "naked" drivers like .sys .cat .inf ... but the drivers I got from dell have also .dll .exe and other files but nvidia driver even has its own setup.exe.
How to make XP setup to install such drivers during unattended setup?

Is there any info recorded anywhere in Windows, that tells me the name of a setup file
that (ideally including it's path)?

An executable can usually (always?)
be opened with 7-zip, often (like itunes) revealing the executable internally to contain a collection of .msi's. Maybe info about the execution of one of these is logged somewhere, in which case (with a bit more effort) I think the 'origin' (setup.exe) could
be inferred...

I read that the journal records every file that's opened!!! is this human-readable?

Thinking aloud. I have about 7 widi setup executables I obtained whilst trying to setup
intel widi, similar scenario with several other applications installed on various VHDs. I'd like to purge my downloads>>setups folder, but retain installation-media for important applications (just in case).

So much info is installed during installation (ie setup/msi stuff as well as appdata of
course), surely something this simple must be possible somehow, somewhere! somebody?

I have several Asus Eee netbooks that I'm getting set up to use at my school. I had some parent volunteers helping me get them ready to deploy, and one of the netbooks was plugged in to initially power it up, but then hard-shut-down before Windows could run through its initial setup.

Now when I boot up the netbook, and it attempts to go through the initial windows setup "Setup is starting services", and then throws an error message:
The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation.I restart, and the cycle continues. This happens whether I try to boot normally or in safe mode.

I've got no CD-drive attached to it, so I'm not sure what I can do to break this error cycle. Any suggestions/tools/ideas?

Not sure how you deployed them, but if Startup Repair doesn't help when run from System Recovery Options then I would redeploy the image or run Factory Recovery from its partition after backing up the disks.

If you don't have one and they are same hardware, simply backup one's image using Win7 backup imaging or free Macrium - Image your system then boot System Recovery options to Recover Using an Image from its external storage location which you have connected.

If they are not same exact hardware or Image hangs at startup, SysPrep the original before deploying to remove all drivers, activation, SID and HID's.

Hi Guys & Gals,

I've been trying to get my Home XP(SP2) desktop talking to my XP(SP2) Laptop, using tips gleemed from the threads in this forum.

My desktop does not require a sign-on.
My laptop is from work and requires sign-on to the work Domain.
I have put my Desktop into a workgroup of the same name as the laptop domain.
I have enabled file & print sharing, and added the laptop into my trusted Norton security zone on the Desktop.
I have shared folders on both machines.

I can see the Workgroup from my Laptop but not the desktop within it.
I can see the Domain from my Desktop but it times out if I try to drill further.
I cannot see my shared printer (connected to the desktop) from the laptop.
I can map from my laptop to desktop (shared folder), but not vice versa.

The only thing I haven't tried is to run the Network setup wizard on either the desktop or laptop.

Here's my question: if I run that wizard on my laptop, will it destroy my work network settings?

OR any other ideas what I should try to get each machine to see each other?

Ive read the Instructions on how to setup XP to dual-boot with Vista...
However, im concerned (and someone mentioned it happened to them in the thread)
that when XP SETUP is finished with the TX part of setup and reboots PC to go into the
rest of setup (GUI XP SETUP)) it wont continue....?
is this right>? ive read elsewhere that if the partitions for XP are created in Vista that it wont boot into the rest of setup....

I could make the partition during XP setup if this will help?

A:Vista/XP Dual Boot - Will XP setup continue into GUI setup after reboot of 1st part.?

When I did my dual boot [using win2k / vista] I used an existing partition that was created by vista. No problem at all. It is a little more difficult than say installing win2k after xp however as long as you follow the instructions there are no problems.

As always make an image of your system before you start. This way if something does go wrong, it is a simple matter to restore the image and be back where you started from.

I'm trying to install windows xp, after formatting, it goes thru the process of copying the xp files and automatically reboots. Now after rebooting, instead of this installation to continue, it just goes back to the same setup process again i.e right from the beginning again of wanting to format and repeating the same process again. It does not continue with the installation as it normally does. Xp disk is good. no problem with it.
One thing strange I noted is when booting with the XP disk in, it automatically goes thru with the XP setup without asking 'Click any key to boot from CD-Rom'
Any ideas to solve this? Thank you all in advance

The simple answer is a stuck key, or a faulty key signal. Could you post your system specs to give us a little more to go on?

i can setup my d-link 604 wired router with no probs...but after i have done that then i need to do something in the windows control panel under the network connections icon. i have no clue what to do there to complete the final step in networking my 2 machines. some nfo: 2 new machines with ethernet cards. one is xp home and the other is xp pro. all i want to do is make those 2 machines use the same cable connection...i dont want ics or print/file sharing. i have been told to set up the router then power cycle the devices and magically the 2 machines will begin working. but i refuse to fall into that lame trap. i do format approx every 3-4 months so i will need to know how to do this so i can recover from that activity. each machine has a network connection from its previous service - do i delete this - do i create a new one -must i disable/delete/leave alone original connection icon ??? these are the many questions that i have and i have googled this and can not find any nfo as to what to do, on the windows side, after the router is setup. help, i have been trying to figure this out for approx 2 months and my hardware will be obsolete before i get it, so i appeal for help, mahalo and aloha.

I mistakenly launched XP Setup and want to know how to stop it from progressing further. I have another XP installed on another virtual disk. Rebooting from there allowed me delete the Setup files. Or so I thought ! The main XP installation however continues to try to launch Setup. Just about whatever I do, it ends in tears. My question is … how do I stop XP on this disk from thinking it has to launch Setup? I don’t want to reinstall XP, as that will involve a huge amount of work to recreate my environment.

I am able to choose my operating system when I press F8

If I launch the corrupt system in “safe mode” or “domain controllers”, everything appears to progress normally until the very end… when the XP black desktop appears (and just before the icons appear). At that point I get the error message
“Windows XP cannot run under safe mode” and I am asked to click OK to consult a log file. The screen however is actually frozen at that point, so I have to unplug the machine.

Otherwise if I launch in debugging mode or “Last known good configuration”m I get a message saying “Setup will restart now” and then “ Setup is being restarted…” while the usual XP installation logos start to appear e.g. “An exciting new look etc…”. Shortly afterwards I get
“An error that has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing ”,
Again the screen freezes so I need to unplug the machine.

I looked at the difference config and ini files, and compared the Windows dir... Read more

So I decided to experiment with Raid 0 on my i7 system to see if it had any impact on video encoding performance using two 500Gb Green Caviar WD HDD's. Specifically, I encoded a 700Mb AVI to DVD. Unfortunately, it took almost 3 times longer over a single HDD setup.

Prior to this, I installed Vista Ultimate (non-Raid mode) on 5 different 500Gb HDD's and a Velociraptor and ran the same test above. Keep in mind that the video file and the software were always on the Main Drive and there were no jumpers on any of them.

Here's A summary:

WD 500Gb Green Caviar 16mb Cache = 13 mins
WD 500Gb Green Caviar 16mb Cache = 36 mins
WD 500Gb Green Caviar 16mb Cache = 13.5 mins
WD VelociRaptor 150Gb 16mb Cache = 12.5 mins
Seagate Barracuda 500Gb 16mb Cache = 39 mins
Seagate Barracuda 500Gb 32mb Cache = 37 mins
Raid0 WD 2 x 500Gb Green Caviar = 34 mins

I am trying to get into BIOS Setup or Program Setup with the keys " DEL or " F12 " on my Acer Aspire M3450 - UR20P for the last few days. I am not sure why it won't happen after restarting the desktop then hit the key for BIOS or Display Boot Setup. After the desktop restarted and went right into login at Windows. I am wondering if I can get into command prompt to type the commands for those two setups or not possible.

If yes, is there a tutorial for this.
