I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

From your sig, you have an nforce mb. That is normal. After you install the nforce drivers, it shows as a removable drive. It is because the board supports hot swapping the drives.

I have an older asrock dual sata board, bought a hard 250gb barracuda drive, installed it. It shows up in the bios as working, shows up on post as enabled, but does not show up in windows 7. I read around and also tried to assign a drive number to it, but it does not show up there either.

I have tried running it in IDE mode and still get nothing. but I tested the drive in an xp system and it works fine. On one restart after installing the drive it said it needed ULi SATA/RAID Controller (M1689/M1695) driver. I got them, but they wouldn't install, but then I ran them in vista mode, however they didn't fix the issue. Anyone have anything else I can try?

Bought a LG Blu-ray internal sata rewriter. Installed it and windows 7 found it first time. So far so good.
Put windows into sleep mode and when I woke it up the sata drive was missing.
The drive was not only missing, but the tray failed to manually open and the activity light did not illuminate.
Drive totally dead. Check all power and sata cables all ok.
Done a full reboot and drive came back ok

This only happens when the machine is put into sleep mode. Sata drivers all up to date and all cables 100%.
Turn the machine fully off or restart and everything works ok each time. Use sleep mode and it fails when you bring the m/c to life.

Has anyone had a similar problem and how can it be put right? I use ( well I did ) the sleep mode quite a lot and this has become a bit of a pain.

Thanks

Just built a new PC with an ASUS X99 Deluxe Mother board. I have installed a new SSD drive and two SATA drives from my old computer, along with one new SATA 2G HD. I plan to migrate data from the old drives to the new one. All the drives show up in the BIOS but when I boot to the OS the new drive and one of the old ones does not show up in Windows. I have installed all the ASUS drivers in windows, and I am now wondering if the OEM version of Windows 8.1 that I purchased has a limitation of how may drives it will support. Can someone please clarify?

Hello, i have just recently started having some weird performance problems with my computer. It has been locking up a lot lately and a few times when i had to hard-reset it, my main WD 160GB hard drive would not show up on the list of drives in startup. I would then have to restart and try again maybe 2 more times and then the drive would finally show up and i'd have to change the boot priority back to it. Is the drive failing? Might it be a memory / processor issue as well? (with the locking up and 1 BSOD)

A:new sata hard drive showing as scsi in win 7 help

With some hard disk controllers it is normal for it to show up as a SCSI disk - particularly if the disk controller is running in AHCI mode, which is preferrable since it allows features such as NCQ. One thing you may want to check is: locate the drive itself under "Disk Drives" in device manager and go into the properties. Select the "Policies" tab and view what is set. For better performance you will want it set to "Better Performance" with both of the boxes checked. Though if you lose power you may run into minor file corruption issues - I personally have not had issues with this. If you disable those check-boxes performance can decrease significantly.

Hi guys
My laptop is not displaying my Sara drive in the my computer screen. I have had this issue before with an IDE drive, a strange issue where my external drive only appears in the list when I unplug it and then when I plug it in, it disappears.

With this drive, I get the message the device can perform faster in a USB 2 port (something my prehistoric laptop doesn't have,) then I get the message that the device is ready to use.

If I go into device manager it does appear as a USB Mass Storage Device and I've tried updating driver, rollback, uninstall and everything else I can think which all seem to work ok until I go into my computer and it isn't there.

Any ideas? Thanks

Hi guys,
I'm hoping you can help
On Friday I purchased an Intel NUC DN2820FYKH. Installed the correct RAM and HDD and installed windows 8.1 through USB. The system installed the OS and booted normally. However, when I shutdown the mini-pc and later turned it back on, it would not recognise the SATA drive.
I assumed something must have gone wrong so I removed it, formatted it in another machine and repeated the process. Eventually I re-installed windows 8. To check, I shut down the computer immediately, and the same problem occurred.
The initial startup screen (showing F2 for setup) hangs when the drive is plugged in but the bios still shows nothing, I tried mounting the drive in an external caddy and connecting it by USB and the computer was able to see it again.
On Friday I updated to the latest BIOS (fy0039). I rolled the BIOS back to (fy0015) and tried every update since then without luck.
I don't think its a hardware fault as a format fixed it until I booted into windows. Before I booted into windows I was having a bit of trouble finding the right installer and the drive was showing up fine. It seems that it's only once I've booted into windows that the drive vanishes on shutdown.

I am using a trial copy of 8.1 Enterprise from MS website.
Please note I have also posted this question on the Intel forums (https://communities.intel.com/message/254820#254820) but in the past have had quicker and more relevant help from this forum.

Does anyone have any ideas?

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as

is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

Hi

I have been having an issue with my self built system, not sure if it is hard drive, virus or software conflict.

1- A month ago I started experiencing slow start up and afterwards there would be system hangs and the HDD light would be on for a while before system response.
2- Last week started having black screen on start up then I would get the Windows start up screen for a split second then login screen comes up.
3- From Saturday I would have problems loading web pages. The page would load fully but there would be no functionality i.e cant click on links, videos wont play(have to reload the page for it to work), clicking on Google prediction links the browser hangs or crashes.
4- Today I have been getting Windows Explorer crashes when I open recycle bin.
5- Biggest problem though is programs are not showing in Programs list in the Control panel but all programs start up normally but.
6- Of late games have been also stuttering. Battlefield 4 mantle also stopped working now using DirectX and GTA 4 not loading textures.

Any help will be appreciated

Hi, hopefully should be straight forward enough...

I have just bought one of these space saving Acer Revos which does not come with an Optical drive.

I have a Blu-ray reader (dvd writer) which is SATA, but the Revo only has USB or eSATA.
So... i was wondering what is needed to get this (SATA) drive to work via eSATA or usb?

Is it as simple as a SATA to eSATA cable or will this not give the necessary power to the drive?

Or do i need an eSATA enclosure, and if so what size for an optical drive 5.2?

Cheers for any help.

I'm playing with a recently retired server running 32bit Windows 7 Professional. Originally it was configured as RAID 0 with 5 SATA drives. Those drives are gone but I want to install a spare 2TB SATA drive that I have. Using the RAID Management software I have created the drive and it shows the correct configured capacity. I initialized the disk with Disk Management and it lists the disk as online but it doesn't show up in the volume list with a drive letter. My intention is to use the 2TB drive as media storage. Other than combing RAID and Windows 7, what am I doing wrong? Am I better off reformatting everything and reloading Windows?

I am one of those people who like to gradually transfer over from one technology to another when the price is right. Well the price is right especially since SATA has been out for several years and PATA is an obsolete technology.

I have a PATA drive which is formatted for NTFS, not fat 32. I want to install it on a SATA 2 drive. I want to back it up with Ghost or Acronis and install it on the new sata2 drive.

Will this work? The drives aren't the same size either. Does it matter if it is Acronis or Ghost?

Thanks

A:Can I use Ghost or Acronis to back up my PATA drive and install it on a SATA drive

If you have the drivers for the SATA controller installed on your Windows installation then there's rarely any issue cloning the PATA drive to a SATA drive, and there's no issue with cloning to larger drive either, both Acronis and Ghost support going to a smaller or bigger drive. The file system doesn't matter.

Please help me with this one :

I have repartitioned my primary IDE drive & re-installed WinXP-pro, system is up & nearly fully restored but one of my 2 archive drives is unaccessable... I have 2 of: WD SATA 200Gb drives full of avi files & other things ....one is normal & useable as it should be, the other is not being recognized right.
BIOS sees them both, Disk Mgr sees them both, but it sees the problem drive as being Dynamic and Foreign......it will not recognize anything else about it.... I can right-click it in Disk Mgmt tool and I could convert to a basic disk, but I will loose all data. I can also choose to Import when I right click it, but I dont know what will happen... maybe it will fix the problem, but I'm not real interested in experimenting with my data - I would really like to save it....
I have no other system with SATA to put the drive in to check it ... just this one....I have re-installed the SATA drivers & it should be picked up properly like the other one....but it is still not there....
Hello?
Hello?
............Hello?

Thanks

A:SATA drive unaccessable-is called Dynamic Foreign drive

Unless you're going to have a multidisk volume HDD I don't think you will want
to partition your SATA into a Dynamic Disk. I have never heard of Dynamic and Foreign but things change everyday.

Other operating systems: If you convert a disk with a partition that contains an operating system other than Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional, you will not be able to start the computer from that operating system after the conversion.

Reverting back to basic disks: After you convert a basic disk into a dynamic disk, you cannot change the dynamic volumes back to partitions. Instead, you must delete all dynamic volumes on the disk and then use the Convert To Basic Disk command. Hope this answer some of your question.

SATA drive detected as an atapi drive by windows xp setup.

I’m wanting to install windows xp for backwards compatible with order programs.

1st primary partition is W7 size is 243.71 GB NTFS maximum it will shrink down.
2nd primary partition is setup as 99.97 GB FAT32 (can expanded space later after installing SP2)

After installing XP,
I will use the windows 7 system boot disk and do the following from the command prompt
Bootrec /fixmbr
Bootrec /fixboot
Bootrec /rebuildbcd

Is it ok to install windows xp, since it sees the drive as an atapi and don't need to worry about the sata driver?
Is the boot fix correct?

Thank You
I also added a logical partition which has been removed. Out of curiosity I put a windows 98 setup cd. It didn't see the Fat 32 2nd partition but it did see the logical fat 32 partition as a normal dos primary partition. It makes me wonder on SATA drives if windows 98se can be installed onto logical partition. There was a size limitation, it only saw around 35 GB

I was just copying files right from my c drive (which contains 2 defunct windows folders that the pc doesnt use.. I had no clue what i was attempting to do years ago with this install.) onto my e drive which is the primary drive. i am going to reformat the c drive to install windows 7.

Now what happened is that i went to disconnect the one drive to make 100% certain the windows folders on c are not in use (im sure theyre not since they havent been modified in years) but ran into an error on bootup where the system couldnt find the file ntldr. I had to burn this fix from my laptop onto a dvd and then run that and it fixed it. What happened was that in the root c drive folder was the ntldr file (and a few others apparently) that i moved into a folder on my e drive in my attempts to preserve everything from the c drive for after i format it.. I moved all those little files back to the root c drive. I checked in the root e folder and those files arent there. I was expecting there to be copies of them at least.

I then copied those files from the c: root dir to the E: root dir. I then unplugged c and booted and i get the "error loading os" or "os not found" i forget the exact error message... This may have something to do with e: being a SATA drive and c: being an IDE drive however.

Anyway, for whatever reason, the pc will not recognize the e drive on the SATA as bootable. I read that if I boot from the xp cd and choose repair on the e drive, it may fix... Read more

Can anybody talk me through installing a slave drive on my gateway gm5483e motherboard model 945gct-m3 made by elitegroup also known as ECS

A:windows Vista sata hard drive slave drive

plvness,

It should be as simple as installing a couple of cables. Hopefully you've got a nice flat cable either with the new slave drive, or a spare with the motherboard: it's normally red, but can be other colours, about 1cm wide and 1mm thick. That needs to be plugged in between the drive and one of your SATA slots on the motherboard. They'll normally be black, and unlike most, will have a slight 'L' shape to them. If you get a torch on your motherboard, you should see SATA1 or SATA2 written very close to them. If you've already got a SATA drive, then it should be easy to spot, so just use the second port.

When you start the machine up, go into the BIOS by pressing the appropriate key (it should come up with a screen just after displaying what graphics card you have / testing memory, telling you what key to press - normally F1, F2, F12, Esc or Del),

Then find your way to the 'Boot Order' section (sorry, not sure quite where it'll be for your chipset - but it'll be either on the first screen, or more likely a menu off of it), and make sure that it's still on your CD/Floppy/original drive first and hasn't swapped to your new SATA (it shouldn't have done, but some prefer a SATA drive by default to an IDE).

Any probs or questions, please come back. You'll do fine!

Rich.

Dell Dimension 8400 (about 3-4 years old). Stock SATA 160gb hard drive crashed (got the blue screen, all the codes, etc.) Took it to a computer place, they also said the HD crashed. I have bought a replacement 250gb SATA HD - attached the two inputs to the back (one thin and ling, one thin and short) and all I get on boot up is a couple of chirps and the screen says "Drive 1 (and 2 and 3) Not Found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" and repeats for drives two and three. The drive is warm, it's being accessed (it's humming), but I've also tried a third 160gb drive, same thing. I even replaced the original drive back in and the same thing - not even the blue screen and error codes any more.

Went to F2 set up, set to auto detect, all (SATA) drives sets to 'on.'

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

HelloI have recently upgraded from vista 32bit to Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. All my important data was stored on Icybox External Drive enclosure in RAID mode (fully working before the upgrade).

Since the upgrade it is not showing up under "My computer", and then I go to disk management it is showing as an invalid Dynamic drive. I spent about 18 hours in various forums searching for solution, tried everything suggested, nothing worked.
I need the data that is on the ICYBOX and cannot convert it to basic disk until I get the data off.
The commercial software recommended did not work either.
Loosing my will to live!Anyone has any suggestions please?
Thank you

Hi all,

I am attempting to install Win7 in an Inspiron 1545 with a new SATA hard drive that was purchased. When i insert the drive, I get "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found." I have verified the drive is not showing in the BIOS, I've already attempted to reseat the drive several times. In addition, I've attempted to load the chipset drivers, SATA drivers, etc from Dells website, the drive still does not show in the OS install when booting to DVD or in bios.
I dont believe it to be an issue with the new drive, as I plugged the new drive into another model Dell laptop and it recognizes the drive fine in BIOS, also I can still boot to the previous hard drive in this laptop without issue when i plug it back in.
Is there a specific driver, etc that I need to use for the drive to be recognized or other thoughts people have?

A:Inspiron 1545- replacing hard drive, new SATA drive not found "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found

This is strange - either the new hard drive has a rare compatibility issue with your onboard controller (I use a 500Gbyte in my 1545 without probs)) or it is a mechanical problem.I would take a close look at the physical dimensions and compare your original hdd with the new one.Watch the video (even though it's about a 1525 (similar to an 1545) and an SSD hdd) -  go to 2:20

i'm using windows 7, my external hard drive shows up in my devices and printers section but it won't show up as a drive, so i can't view any files in that external hard drive. if i put a memory card in, it shows up as a drive and a flag shows up for when i want to unplug that drive and it asks if i want to remove my external hard drive too.

normally when i turn on the external hard drive it autoplays but it doesn't do that anymore.

i don't understand why it shows up in my devices and printers but not as a drive when i open windows explorer.

i've looked into the external hard drives properties and it all says that the device is working properly.

A:problem with external hard drive not showing as a drive in windows 7

Go into Control Panel (classic view) ---> Administrative Tools ---> Computer Management ---> Disk Management.

In bottom-right pane, if you see a horizontal band representing a drive with no drive-letter assigned to it, that's the cause of your problem. You need to give it a drive-letter:

Right-click that horizontal band and choose "Change drive letter and paths".

First off PC specs:

AMD Phenom II x4 processor - 3.4 Ghz
8GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia N460 GTX GFX card
240GB SanDisk SSD
Windows 7 64 bit

So here is the problem. I had a Western Digital 300 GB SATA drive that was starting to quit on me. So using an Ubuntu live CD I cloned the 300 gig drive onto the 240 gig drive (I only had used approx. 120 GB on the old drive so had LOTS of free space). It seemed to clone fine, and after removing the old drive the computer booted up fine (no errors, running super fast). Windows 7 also recognizes it as a solid state drive (it doesn't show up in the defrag list). However, I just noticed that it's showing the space on the drive as incorrect. It shows up as 126GB free of 297 GB (so pretty much the same size as the old drive). the motherboard's bios shows it correctly, and my linux CD shows it correct as well.

Any way I can fix this in windows without a reinstall of the OS?

A:Problem after having cloned drive. (showing incorrect space on drive)

Maybe you can try to clone with Macrium free
Try loading defaults in BIOS

I need to retrieve data from a SATA drive but can only achieve this if I can connect it as a slave drive to a machine with a master PATA drive. The motherboard will accept both devices. Is this possible? and if so how?

A:Master PATA drive Slave SATA drive-is it possible

Leave the pata as master, plug in the sata and reboot. OS will assign new drive letter to the sata and you should be able to see it.

I am running Windows 7 Pro. Have a external dual dock connected to a estata port. One of the drives assigned letter K often comes up as E and I have to change as application is looking for K. Another disk in this dock works fine. No problems.
Does anyone know why this might be happening or anyway to prevent?
Seems like when I go to disk management and assign K it should stay that way.

Try assigning a drive letter a "distance" away from your existing drive letters.

For example, change the dock drive letter to Z and see how you get on with that.

I messed up by making a cloned SATA drive instead of just doing an image back up. Now, because it's recognized as a real system drive, I can't get to it to make it a backup drive with an image vice a clone.

Sorry to hear you are having issues Beaner...

Not sure how politically correct that name is either... LOL!

What application did you use to make this "Clone"?

Can you boot into your OS? If yes, can you see both the old HDD and the Cloned HDD? If you can positivly ID the cloned drive just format it and start again!

I can give you more details once you give me more details!

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a 1.5TB Seagate SATA HDD Which I will be using as a data drive. I have my Primary 320gig sata hd which i use for windows. Now when I go to install the 1.5tb Drive, it detects it on first boot in the bios. when it trys to boot, it hangs on a black screen and doesnt move. When I go to restart, the 320 Primary Drive dissapears and only the 1.5tb drive is visable.

So what I've tryed to do is ive disconnected the 1.5tb drive, i left the 320 drive connected and it booted up fine. got into windows and worked as normal. but when I plugged in the 2nd drive it doesnt boot up. and when it doesnt boot, you restart and the 320 dissapears. I've also ghosted my 320gig drive to the 1.5tb drive. My 320 contained 2 partitions (C: for windows and D: for data) So atm im using my 1.5tb drive like my 320 with the C and D. But would anyone know the issue why I cant have both drives in there.?

Here are the troubleshooting steps I took

1) Changed SATA Cables
2) Changed the sata order (Plugged primary in SATA 2 and DATA HD in SATA 3 to see if the ports are faulty
3)Took out the IDE CD-ROM
4) Tryed to mess around in the bios and nothing worked.

Also using an ASUS P5ND mobo with lastest bios update.

A:Hard Drive Dissapears after installing 2nd SATA Drive

What is the power supply like? Make sure the power cables are on a different branch, if possible.

Perhaps the PSU isn't sending out enough power for both drive on a single cable?

Just a guess.

There was a post on this earlier in the month, but it was about a laptop and the responders told others to make a new thread with their problems. So here's mine:

I bought a seagate sata drive, and I'm trying to install xp on it. I have an epox 9nda3j mobo. The computer already has a WD pata drive dual-booting XP and Vista on it. I've had absolutely no luck installing XP on the computer, getting the same disc read errors that others get. I tried using nlite to make a boot disc, but I'm not sure if I did it right or not. I tried using a USB floppy with the sata drivers from epox, but XP appears to have no intention of recognizing it. I briefly looked into seagate's disc wizard, but it didn't seem to be very helpful either. I saw some stuff about dynamic drive overlay being a problem in other searches I made, but the option to remove it from my drive was grayed out. So now I'm sitting here with a 400GB paper weight. Does anyone have any idea what I could be doing wrong here, or what else I need to do to fix this?

A:fresh xp install on new sata drive w/o floppy drive

any ideas?

I have a Dell Dimension MCE 8400 that I ordered with a single drive. In retrospect I should have ordered it with 2 drives and without MCE but that is another discussion. I am wanting to install a new OEM WD Cavier SATA 160 with dual boot operating systems on the same drive but partitioned, XP Pro and MCE. I have installed the WD drive as the second drive (in position 1) and made a partition of 40 GB. The drive is seen by the system. I reboot the system and go into setup, disable the Maxtor SATA drive (one delivered with system and in position 0) change the boot order so it boots from CD, save the changes. I boot the system with the Win XP Pro CD, and in the FDD I have WD SATA drivers. The system boots, I hit F6 and it looks as though it is reading the SATA controller drivers. Needless to say the system doesn't recognize that a hard drive is present. Please help!!!!! If anyone has any ideas or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
