Merging Word docs with different headers and footers in 2007

Q: Merging Word docs with different headers and footers in 2007

How do I merge 2 Word docs into one that have different headers and footers without changing them? I am not experienced in Macros, so would prefer a way to do it without getting into that. I am using Windows Office 2007 Professional.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Suddenly, Word 2007 does not display the header and the footer of any document. I can see in print preview!

Any idea how to solve this issue?

I am using Word 2003 and I have created a template containing a header/footer combination with my company letterhead information. This was working fine but the problem I now have is that when I open a new document by loading the template the header and footer are not shown. I must switch into them (using View/Header and Footer)
and they then appear. After that they stay visible. Apparently I have accidentally changed something.

My question is whether anyone knows how to have the header and footer visible by default when I open a new document using the template.

I am using Mircosoft Word 2000 and when I try to create headers and footers in my document by selecting view - headers and footers the document opens in print preview not print layout and I am unable to edit the headers and footers.

Thank you.

A:Headers and Footers Word 2000

You should be able to change the view in the same area as the footers/headers. Near the top of the pull down menu there are areas that indicate normal - web - print etc. Also at the bottom of your page are buttons showing the different view modes for your document. Hit the normal view and you should be able to work on your headers/footers.

Hi Constantine,The easiest way that I can find to do this is to create "Sections" in your Template/Document. By using Sections you can create different Headers or Footers for each Section.Check this link out, you should get the general idea.HTH

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere but Ive looked everywhere cant find the answer.

Is there anyway to have just a header in a document and not a footer?

I know you can have different headers/footers on each page etc and you can leave the footer empty and change how far it is away from the edge of the page but I cant seem to find a way of just inserting a header and no footer at all.

Any help will be accreciated its driving me mad

After banging my head against the wall and fighting with Visual Basic to create a template full of fancy bells and whistles for my client, I've come up against a probably simple, but amazingly annoying issue.

When I apply my template to a document, the headers and footers don't appear. I don't understand. (Yes, I click View --> Headers, Footers.) They're not there.

I go back to the template. They exist. I create a new document. They exist. I apply the template to a document with no headers/footers (or in some cases existing headers/footers) and nothing.

If it were just for me, I'd come up with a workaround. But I need to hand this template off to a client who needs to work with it. Cutting and pasting, etc, isn't going to do it.

Surely there is a way to make the headers and footers appear when applying to an EXISTING document.

Thank you so much, in advance, for any help you might provide.

Welcome to the forum. If you post the Word document as an attachment we can better look at it. I think you cannot post attachments until your 7th post or so though. If you mail me the document and let me know on the forum, then I will post it up here for you. Also if you feel uncomfortable posting the document, just post the code instead.

I have had trouble formatting Word 2003 documents so that the header is suppressed on the first page but the footer prints. It is probably some little thing that I am missing. I am a dyed-in-the-wool WordPerfect fan and use Word only as a last resort, so am not familiar with some of the fine points of the latter. To briefly summarize: I have gone to the View / Headers and Footers menu and entered the desired text for the header and the footer. Then I have gone to the Page Layout button and run into trouble there. If I click on First Page different, I suppress printing of both the header and the footer. I have tried choosing "From this point forward" and then entering header text on the second page rather than the first, but either both header and footer are blank on the first page, or if I unclick the box for First Page Different, then the header displays as well as the footer. I will appreciate any help.

A:Solved: Formatting Headers/Footers in Word 2003

Sounds like what you need is a section break. At the end of the first page, insert a section break - make sure you make it a page section break. This will allow you to have different headers for each section. On page 2 (which is now the first page of section 2), enter your header. On the header and footer toolbar, there is a "link to previous" button. It's selected by default, so you'll have to unselect it. The header might have automatically been put onto the first page; if so, go to page one and delete the header. As long as the "link to previous" button is not enabled, this should delete the header on only the first page, leaving you with the footer on all pages. Let us know if you need clarification on any of the steps since you're not used to using Word. Good luck!

Hi Guys - I'm new to this site and not very tech savvy or sure of which forum topic to post this under. If I'm not posting under the right topic please let me know which topic thread would be more suitable.

I run Word 2007 on Windows 7. I recently had a virus hide all my documents and programs - the virus has been removed but it has changed things around.

I cannot open the word documents I have stored in My Docs. All the icons next to the name of the word files are showing up as a little orange page - when I click on the file name, a Microsoft Office 2010 window comes up which says "The Microsoft Office Product needed to open this file is not installed on your computer". And then it has the invitation to purchase Office 2010.
Does anyone know what's going on here with this and know how I can rectify this & change this back somehow so I can open & read these docs in Word 2007 again?

I can open Word 2007 and make a new document and save it but if I go to open it again it has been converted into this other file with the orange page icon and I cannot open it.

(I can open & save in wordpad - the wordpad doc can be saved in My Docs and it will reopen so I can read it again. Also my music, picture and video files all open ok.)

A:Office 2007-Word-Footers and Page #'s

I'm not following. Headers and footers don't go away. They are always there even if there's nothing in them. If you insert page number field then it should display. It will also "stay in the document" unless you remove it.

Is your problem perhaps that the page number displays on, say, the first page but not others? If that is the case, you need to go into Page Layout and change the settings for Headers and Footers.

I'm running Word 200 on Vista. I have a book - pages are 6 x 9.

I have a book with many sections. There are no page numbers for the first 6 sections. When I start the odd and even page numbers (they start at page 3), the odd pages are positioned in the footer correctly and increment properly for the rest of the document. But the evens, which are positioned correctly do not increment. They're all page 4. I called Microsoft 's Word 2007 free-for-30-days tech support (they're in India) and the guy spent two hours and couldn't figure it out. BUT I NOTICED AFTERWARDS THE FOLLOWING:

When the odd page numbering begins, THE HEADERS COMPLETELY DISAPPEAR. Not even their "shadows" are there. But I can't get the even headers to disappear. Or the footers to disappear.

1) The reason why I want the headers to go away is that it may make the even page numbers work like the odd page numbers.

2) Or, failing that, if I can get the footers to disappear I can definitely lower the margin, since I will have freed up that space -- and I can enter the page numbers by hand. The page numbers can be no higher than .5 from the bottom. But the closest I can get them now, lowering margins, is about 7/8" (.875).

Can either the headers or the footers be deleted entirely --like you could do in earlier versions of Word?

Hi JFresh,
Sounds like a margin problem to me. Go to File/Page Setup/Margins and set the top margin to a higher number or the header margin to a lower number. For example, if the header is 0.5 and the top is 1, try changing the top to 1.5. Let us know if that doesn't seem to do the trick.

I'm having a problem with a Word 2k3 document:

I'm trying to make changes to this document such as setting the margin to 2.5" from the top on one page and a 1/2" to 1" on all others.
I make the changes, and everything looks ok until I hit the save button. Upon hitting the button the formatting reverts back to its original state (as if I didn't make any changes).

I've unchecked the 'update links' and the 'update fields' boxes under Tools -> Options -> Print tab but to no avail.

However one thing I think it may be related to is the headers and footers in the document. Just above the beginning of the text on the page (which is centered) there is a grayed out carraige return charcter (the backwards p looking thing). It's greyed out similar to the way field codes are displayed in grey. If I double click on it then the header toolbar appears and I am able to edit the contents of that header or footer. Also when I do double click on it, all of the text that I've typed turns grey. Finally, if I click the close button on the Header toolbar then the backwards p symbol disappears, and my document appears exactly as it should (with the revisions I made).

I apologize if this seems very confusing. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask and I'll try to clarify as best I can.

Thanks for all your help,

Might you have your document in Outlook?
I have seen many people have a document in Outlook, they make edits and save them, but when they reopen the document they are surprised that none of their edits are there. The obvious reason is that their edits were done to the "temp" copy in the Outlook on-drive storage location, not really their one in the Outlook email.

Just a guess.

Otherwise, you could place a copy of your doc here in the Board, and we could look at it here, to see what you are seeing.

Go into the header and footer of each section of the document. Hit Ctrl+A, Format-Font, Hidden text.

And if you send it to someone--they may also be viewing hidden text...

I planned to seek help from TSG about finding an easier way of getting into headers in the MSWord 2007. Word had changed rather drastically from the previous version and I found the new version unnecessarily complicated when it came to dealing with headers.

But before posting, I decided to look at the situation very carefully once more so I could describe the issue accurately. Lo, and behold, I discovered the existence of something called the "Quick Access Toolbar." Now maybe you knew all about that, if so, this post is not for you.

Right-click on an empty place on the top menu bar to the right of the menu items (Home, Insert, Page Layout, etc). When you do that, you will see a menu window appear that provides these options: "Customize Quick Access Toolbar," "Show Quick Access Toolbar Above (or below) the Ribbon," and "Minimize the Ribbon" (The Ribbon being the entire collection of menu icons and subdivisions).

In the Customization Window that appears, you can select items from the extensive list of items in the left column and move them to the "to be included" (my term) column on the right by means of a directional arrow betweem the columns in the middle. You can also remove things you don't want by selecting them in the right column and using the directional arrow between the columns to move them back into the "items from which to select" column on the left.

Let's say I have data contained in Excel with each piece of data in an adjacent cell...

Name: Rank: SSN#:
Smith, John R SSG 123-456-7890

How would I take that information and merge it into a memorandum in Office, all in separate documents?

So say the memorandum looks like this:
Whomever it may concern,

Smith, John R., SSG, United States Army, 123-456-7890 has been certified blah blah blah blah

So if I had 50 names it would produce 50 documents or something?

Is that even possible?

A:Merging Data From Excel Into Word (2003 Or 2007)

I think you can use Mail Merge to do this kind of thing.

I'm guessing your spreadsheet is in the .CSV format?

If you are using 2003, I'm not sure what the headings are at the top, but with 2007 you need to choose the mailings tab and then select start Mail Merge.

Select the Wizard and you should then have an option somewhere down the line to import a data source.

After doing this you should be able to insert the merge fields which should look like <<Surname>> or something like that.

From this you should then be able to create a template letter and print all the records out.

Hope this helps,

I have been working on a school report for the past few days on Google Docs (so I could access it from home and school). Now that I am done modifying the document at school, I exported the file as a Word document. In my stupidity, I clicked 'Open' instead of 'Save' when downloading the file, so I am assuming it saved in some temporary folder. I have been putting the finishing touches on for about an hour, saving every few minutes. However, I just realized that I never selected a location to save to, so I have most likely been saving to some temporary Word location.

Is there a temporary location where Word saves documents downloaded from the Internet? If so, what can I do to find the location and recover the document?

I am running Windows 7, Internet Explorer 9, and Word 2007 if that helps.

I copy a lot of documents as I research. They all have different titles (obviously) and I file them in different document folders according to subject (i.e. Plot, Character Development, Pacing, etc.). I also print them out and put them in notebooks with similarly designated tabs. For ease of reading, I like to put my own title (or sometimes the author's, if it's short enough) followed by the page number in the header on the right. It looks like this:
Hero's Fatal Flaw, Page 4
To make this happen, I currently:
1. Go to Insert
2. Click Page #
3. Click Top of Page
4. Scroll down to Plain #3
5. Click Plain #3
6. Click in the Header
7. Click Control V to enter my text or manually enter it. (Sometimes, if I've planted the cursor just right, I can position the text in front of the page number; otherwise, it ends up left aligned and I have to go through additional steps on the Home tab to right align it. In this case, I also have to delete the extra line that's gratuitously thrown in at the end.)
8. Hit Back Arrow to position the cursor after the last character (for some reason, an extra space is also gratuitously put in)
9. Type , space Page
10. Click Close Header/Footer or Double Click in the document

Doing all these steps on hundreds of documents really takes its toll. There must be a way to streamline it and create some sort of template across multiple documents.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Any help much appreciated.

A:Word 2007 How to Create Default Pg # Header in Multiple Docs?

Create a new Word template, perform steps 1 through 6 the Save As a .dotm file, because page numbering is considered a Macro so your template must be Macro enabled.
So you will create a new document using that template, when it opens you will just type in your custom text and complete the remainder of the steps. Probably someone who is slick with VBA can write the macro so that it will ask for the custom text and once you submit, it will automate the rest of the steps for you.

Hi all,

I sent this off to Microsoft about a month ago and have since received three emails in response, one of which said 'try reinstalling' another saying 'are you sure this is the only program in which there is a problem' and a third saying 'please bear with us, we're experiencing high levels of requests right now and need more time.' That was ten days ago.

So some background information. I purchased a new laptop about two months ago, on which had Windows Vista (business) automatically installed. Office 2007 can read previous versions of Office no matter which program in Office you are using, other versions will need the compatibility pack from Microsoft so they can read 2007 version.

I did use Office 2007 myself recently in a temp job for seven weeks and I don’t remember seeing an option to save a document in an earlier version format, is the computer is still under warranty?

What ram and processor have you got? Some problems with Vista are caused because If buying a new PC or laptop beware of the differences between ‘Vista-Capable’ and ‘Vista Premium Ready’
A PC that is ‘Vista-capable’ can run Windows Vista, but won’t necessarily get everything working. <<<<<<<<

‘VistaPremium-ready’ PC, can get all of the more demanding features such as Aero working correctly.

At the very least Vista needs a truckload of memory and a lot of the cheaper notebooks only come with 512mb of ram unless you have paid for extra, where at least a gig is needed, Ideally 2 gig of memory would be the way to go.

But you did say a reasonable lap top and going by what you wrote it obviously was not like this at the beginning. (Two weeks after you brought it, it started to play up, or is that when you installed Office and its been playing up since you installed it? A:Problem with send word docs using Micrsoft Office Home and Student 2007...

This caused me all kinds of angst when I got my new computer with 2007 Office Student & Home Edition. I searched and searched and after a lot of searching and trying to solve it, I found this gem. See attached link. It fixed Student & Home Office Word, Excel, etc. I kept these notes in Notebook for future reference. Recommend as with any install of this kind that you set a system restore point before you run it. The link is

I recently discovered the Ransom virus on my computer. I downloaded Spyware Hunter and it removed the virus as far as I can tell. It had encrypted several files, which I replaced with backups.
The only thing still wrong, that I can see, is that, when I open a Word document and try to insert a footer, I get a pop-up box that says "File Conversion - HELP_DECRYPT.PNG.: There are no files in the footer gallery, either. The header gallery is also missing and the page number gallery is missing. I tried Repairing the MS Office and then tried removing it and reloading it. But the problem remains.
I use Windows 7, 64-bit and Office 2007.

Welcome aboard First of all I strongly recommend you uninstall Spyware Hunter.See here: https://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/enigmasoftware.com?utm_source=addon&utm_content=popup-donuts HELP_DECRYPT.PNG presence indicates an infection by Cryptowall. That will require elevated help. Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic. If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

I have a multi section document and oen of my pages is landscape.... as a result of this, when I bind my doucment together, the footer of the landscape page appears on the right and the header appears on the left.

How do I change the footer to sit at the left of a landscape page and the header at the right of a landscape page.

Any ideas would be helpful.

You leave your page orientation at portrait and turn the contents of that page sideways (generally by turning it into a graphic and rotating it).

How can I insert page numbers (x of y page format) into the lower right corner of the same footer that has copyright language in the bottom left corner? I am working with Word 2010 in a large capacity PC.

When I put in the second of the two items the first is lost, even though I've selected a divided footer.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Simple question.....

Does anyone know a way of having a different footer for different pages of a single document. Whenever I change a footer for a page it, as expected, changes on every page.

I've got a lot of word documents (about 100) that all have the same footer, but they all need to be edited. If I want to make the exact same change in the footer of every document, is there some sort of tool or utility in Word that would allow me to do this? I know a little about Macros, and I could set up a macro that I could run every time I open the document, but I guess what I'd like is a Macro that would open each document, change the footer, close the document, open the next document....etc.

Anyone know the quickest way to accomplish this?

I am writing a paper which requires headers. The first two pages are fine however once I hit page three or more the header margin goes half way down the page. I don't see a way to have variable header spacing for different pages so I have no idea why this is happening or how to correct it?
