I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I realised once these updates are installed:

MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978)
Security update for Windows XP (KB920213) (KB923980) (KB924270)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - November 2006 (KB890830)

I have problems with using MSN Messenger 7.5, Windows Live Messenger 8 (I upgraded from 7.5 to 8 and the problem persists) and Outlook Express.

When I start Windows Live Messenger, instead of showing my normal display picture with my e-mail address there (so I can just type my password and
login), I see a 'generic' display picture with no e-mail address. Windows Live Messenger lags tremendously. When I type my e-mail and password (subject to huge lagging), Live Messenger will just display an error message "Service temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

When I start Outlook Express to check my Hotmail account, it shows an error while trying to connect to Hotmail servers.

Upon system restore to a state prior to Windows Update, everything is fine.

Once update reapplied, everything reappears, with exact reproducibility.
System Restore returns to state where everything is fine.

Any ideas of what is happening? If it's a real error, can anyone bring this up with Microsoft?

gang I found an old post here that describes my situation, something I caused but don't know how to undo.
The system in question has Windows XP Professional, and MS Office 2000 Professional, the main reason for which is OUTLOOK. When Outlook cranks up it triggers an error message which is in my subject line:
"Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater....". The system of course also has OE6 on it which we don't use, but it does work etc.

The issue is me: I use autoruns to shut off everything non-mandatory, and, as another thread-poster identified, there is something in the list of goods that I have disabled that OE is dependent on, if I understand the old thread properly. The problem is that the poster [OP] in that thread said he found the key, but he didn't NAME THE ENTRIES
Thus, I dunno which ones he reversed that made the issue go away.

if anyone knows, pls let me know, so I can fix my goof.

thx

I wanna make Microsoft Outlook 2010 the default email client for my user side and I wanna leave Outlook Express as default for another user on my computer. I cannot seem to figure out how to do this because once you pick a default email program on one user desktop it also makes it the default for other users on the computer. Hello again kapilkaaiser,
I think you need to import the required info into Outlook 2007 -

In Outlook 2007, click File > Import and Export > Make the appropriate choices
> & hopefully the Import / Export Wizard will oblige.

Post back with your results.

Hi,
Recently I have noticed my Dell Vostro laptop has been very slow in booting to a point where I can actually do something with any speed.

I had been reading various forums regarding the problem and the general consensus was that removing unnecessary start-up programs would assist. This I did, and included in it was the removal of Outlook Express as a start-up as I never use it.

I was rather startled to find that the next time I started up Outlook I get the message indicated in the title. When acknowledging the message, Outlook still opens and functions correctly as far as I can see, but this message always coming up is getting a little tedious.

Why would a company require the lesser of two programs to be loaded and started in order that their more powerful program should work? Amazing thought processes at MS.

I have seen answers for this question elsewhere and I have tried their solutions but to no avail. That includes setting IsInstalled in registry key 881dd1c5-3dcf-431b-b061-f3f88e8be88a to a Dword value of 1.

What I have found, is the key {44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} and {7790769C-0471-11d2-AF11-00C04FA35D02} in registry directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\AutorunsDisabled. As the first refers to Outlook Express 6 and the other to Address Book 6 I assume that this may have something to do with my problem.

If they are the problem, is there a way of moving these keys out of AutorunsDisable and back into Instal... Read more

How do I make Microsoft Outlook the default email program? I make the change in IE version 5, but when I reboot the system (Win 98), Outlook Express is once again selected as the default email program.

I read in a previous post about using the following sequence for making Outlook Express the default. Is there anything similar for Microsoft Outlook? :
------------------------------------------------------
To make Outlook Express your default e-mail client:
Close OE, click Start/Run and enter this command line, complete with quotes, spaces and the /reg switch:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg
---------------------------------------------------------

Thanks very much,

Use the "Import" feature of Outlook Express. if you choose to import "All" folders, it will include all messages and contacts data. or you can choose to import only contacts and not messages.

Obviously, it requires that both Outlook & Outlook Express are currently installed on the same PC.
Go here for a short tutorial: http://www.ehow.com/how_6374425_import-outlook-outlook-express.html

However, it must be pointed out that, for backup purposes, it's much easier to back up data in Outlook than is the case with Outlook Express.

My friend just had her computer reformatted after a bad virus contamination. It is still running EXTREMELY slow but has at least been running correctly. She is running XP

Yesterday I installed Microsoft Office 2003 for her with Microsoft Outlook and now her email doesn't seem to be working. She uses Outlook Express as her mail default rather than Office Outlook but keeps getting the error message that it can't find the POP3.

I also installed AVG for her and have shut off the email plugin to see if that is part of the problem.

The thing is, it happened yesterday right after I installed these programs for her but then a minute later her email worked just fine. Now she just restarted her computer and the mail won't work again.

Is there something wrong with her computer or is it at the server?

I hope this all makes sense.

It is possible and you can either export from the File menu in Outlook or import the same way using OE. However, if you already have problems, it may be that your data file is too big for Outlook to handle. Check this by opening My Computer and from the Tools menu, select Folder Options then View. Tick to "Show hidden files an dfolders" and untick "Hide protected system file and folders". Click Apply, accept the warning and OK your way out.

Next, navigate to Documents and Settings>{yourusername}Local Settings>Application Data>Microsoft>Outlook and if your Outlook Data File (type .pst) is larger than 2Gb, go back into Outlook and delete anything you can to trim it down.

Outlook Express will also suffer an overstuffed data file but if you can't do without your historic e-mails, Mozilla Thunderbird can handle up to 4Gb.

okay, i've got one for you! i couldn't find anything in the archive. i have outlook express 6, msn messenger, and aol messenger installed on my puter. i know what your thinking... why does a hermit have two messengers, but that's irrelevant. in oe6 under tools, options it has an option "automatically log on to msn messenger". well recently i downloaded the newest version of aol messenger and then when i loaded oe6, aol messenger would loaded. so i go to oe6, tools, options, and now it say "automatically log on to aol instant messenger". so this irritated me, so i reinstall msn messenger, now my msn messenger loads with oe6, (like i wanted) but here is the thing... in oe6, tools, options, it still says "automatically log on to aol instant messenger" even though it controls my msn messenger. now i know this is being pretty picky, but how do i make it say "automatically log on to msn messenger" like it did originally?

info: i have Windows 98 (4.10.1998)

Well here's a switch! Doc's needs everyones help for a change.

My mom's computer cannot send and recieve mail on either M/O & O/E. Problem started this yesterday morning some time and I cannot seem to put my finger on the problem.

She runs XP Pro and lives 8hrs away from me, so anything I do is via "remote desktop" and she only has "dialup". Talk about a painful process!

When I click on send and recieve it appears that a connection is being made to the server and infact it even tells me how many messages are there to download. It then starts to download (or appears to) and then suddenly stops and posts an error message stating that the connection to the server was interrupted.

I ran a test on my computer by configuring my M/O using here inbound settings and such and was able to download all her mail without a problem. That leads me to believe the problem is not the server but, infact on her machine.

I have checked all the basic things that I can think of but, at the moment "I'm stumped"

Ideas?

Doc.

A:Microsoft Outlook & Outlook Express

If she's running an antivirus package that does a virtual IP proxie for the incoming/outgoing email AV check, then that might be the source of the problem. Try disabling virus checking for email and see if the behavior changes (This is a known bug in Norton, McAffee, and Avast, but it's rather rare. Usualy only happens for large outgoing attachments).

Also, since this is Dialup, I would check the actual modem to see if there's a problem on the line (or wityh the hardware). To much noise on the line can lead to droped packets and/or decreased bandwidth.

Try using Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 and see if there's still the same problem under that.

Hi ozne64

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Start Messenger and open Outlook Express,
Tools > Options > General tab
If present, uncheck: Automatically log on to MSN Messenger

If not present, place a check mark in: When starting go directly to my Inbox folder
Apply, OK to save and close.
If you have the Contacts Pane showing, this will also cause Messenger to start when Outlook Express is started.
View > Layout
Uncheck: Contacts

Suddenly I cannot run or use Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, MSN Messenger (or whatever the hell it's called now) or Firefox. I can open Outlook Express but it cannot send or receive emails and just tries forever. IE won't load ANYTHING, neither will Firefox. I can use Flock to access the internet. McAfee is telling me I'm not protected and when I click on fix it tells me it can't because of an error. I'm also getting "end program - O" error messages when I reboot. (Let's see I'm running Windows XP and thought I had all the latest versions of the afforementioned programs)

I have been searching the net for days trying to find out what this is. I've seen people post about one issue but never all of them. I'm terrified to try a fix on one thing because they all seem related. Can someone point me in the right direction? Do I need to just try to back up all my data and take this to a professional?? A:Ie, Msn Messenger, Outlook Express & Firefox All Fubar!

Here's a few options I PERSONALLY would try as I have a limited amount of patience and it sounds like you do too.

1. Reinstall Internet Explorer, MS outlook express, Firefox, McAfee.

2. Try switching to ZoneAlarm free or another firewaill, to see if McAfee is the problem, if not, put McAfee back on I guess.

3. If your system automatically creates restore points (which in XP it should, as my XP machine does), restore back to before this all started happening.

Since Flock works, and it's a derivation of Mozilla and it's Gecko insides, Firefox shouldn't be having a problem. What I'm getting is that when you click the icon to open IE or FF, NOTHING at all happens? Does a window open up and not display a page because it cannot connect? What are the details of this?

(And btw, we are professionals. )

Uhm, how do I move my old messages in Netscape messenger to Outlook express, and also how do I erase or remove an entity from Outlook express, you see I have Netzero as my default e-mail carrier but I installed Earthlink for the goodies that came in the CD-rom, and now it whenever I check for mail from Netzero, Outlook Express asks me for my login and password for Earthlink ( which I don't have so I cancel it) and then for My Netzero Password. Everything works fine with Netzero, but I get an error message regarding my inability to get mail from earthlink. So How do I Stop Outlook express to promt me to login to my earthlink account ( which again, don't have)

A:(Solved) From Netscape Messenger to Outlook Express!

Do you want to remove the whole Identity from Outlook Express or just the Account? If just the Earthlink Account it thinks you have, go to Tools>Accounts, Mail tab and delete the account. Then to import your Netscape mail, go to File>Import messages..., choose Netscape Communicator and continue on.

Or, you could just add a new Identity (File>Identities>Add new Identity and follow steps. You should be asked if you would like to import your messages from Netscape.
Then go to File>Identities>Manage Identities and delete the old one.

(If you delete your old identity, the identity information will actually still exist in \windows\application data\identities if you want to completely wipe it out. If you would, before deleting the Identity, log into it and go to Tools>Options, Maintenance tab and click Store folder to see the path to that Identity.)

We have the internet through our cable co. With them, we can have up to 5 mailboxes in our account. We kept the Outlook Express mailbox that we had through the dial-up provider. When we got cable, my husband wanted a mailbox so we set it up.

The problem: Everytime he opens Outlook Express into his mailbox, the little window to sign on the AOL Instant Messenger opens also. What a pain! We have never had this problem before. I am sure there is some little magic connection doing this.

Does anyone know how to disconnect these two programs????

It's not a matter of "x-ing" it out because once open, it notifies our daughter's friends and then their IM messages to her pop up over the middle of his email typing.

A:Outlook Express opens AOL Instant Messenger

Open the Instant Messenger, right click its icon in the system tray and choose Preferences. Under Sign On/Off uncheck "Make AIM My Default Instant Messenger".

Hi,
Each time I start up Outlook Express, it opens the Windows Messenger program, which I never use. I have gone to tools/options and deselected the "AUTOMATICALLY LOG ON TO WINDOWS MESSENGER" but it still does this. Is there any other way to prevent this from happening?

Thanks

I know many of you curse Windows Messenger, but, my wife uses it daily. Windows Messenger loads and runs OK on her XP Home machine when it's booted.

The issue is that Outlook Express lost it's "integration" of Windows Messenger. Her contacts area does not show on-line contacts, and all integration of Windows Messenger in the menus of Outlook Express are missing as well.

I believe this may have resulted in either her using Incredimail for a short while and/or one of the children loading Yahoo Messenger on her machine. Not sure though.

Have looked at all the Windows and Messenger settings and everything looks normal when comparing to a system that does show the integration OK.

I am reluctant to reload Windows Messenger, since the version I can find on Microsoft's site is not as current as the one I am running. I also do not want to go to MSN Messenger as this does not also have any integration with Outlook Express.

Members, any ideas?

Never a problem before, but my Beloved accidently upgraded MSN Messenger when she could not get Email to work(the problem was with provider, but she did not know that). I have gotten rid of all the start up stuff that automaticly was checked with the program, but since I never use "instant messages"...I would like to get rid of it. I cannot find an uninstall for this program, or an option in Outlook Express to disable it.

There are several ways to remove MSN from your system. I found one way but *IT ALMOST CRASHED MY SYSTEM*. So why do I tell you? Cause I screwed up and had it open when I did it so proceed at your own caution.

First Open Outlook express and click on Tools>options>other and uncheck "Enable instant messaging in Microsoft Outlook". Click on apply and ok and restart Outlook. It should be much faster.

EDIT: Upon using my system I deam this a crap tweak! Use it if you want but I'm sorry I wasted my time posting this one.

OK, now for the system cracher.
Click on Run and copy or type in
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove. MAKE SURE you have EVERYTHING closed out. This includes the start-up group. I don't want anybody to have to go through what I just did.

By some chance your system goes black after the first XP logo, just boot to safemode and remove the video drive. I found that the AGP440 file flips out and has to be reloaded.

Personally I hate messenger too, and just removing it from start up doesn't work, so I quit the stupid thing, and renamed it with an extra "s" It can't load what it can't find :) That list of smilies really needs a demonic grin.. anyone who's played D&D knows it.... it's the one the DM has when s/he knows something you don't...darn Beholders :)

My computer runs on Windows XP Home plus Service Pack 1 + 2. Windows Messenger version: 4.7.
Often, when I open Outlook Epxress (version 6), Windows Messenger is loaded although Outlook Express should not log on automatically on Windows Messenger (corresponding option box is unchecked) and Windows Messenger is set so as not to run or load automatically when the computer boots.
I want to disable it (in Outlook Express), but as a consequence Outlook Express may take a very long time to open. I found a tool to disable Windows Messenger but I am not sure if it can prevent a possible delay in Outlook Express:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm
Also, I don't wish to change the registry manually, as it can cause serious problems...
Renaming or moving the Windows Messenger folder does not work - it is protected, and I can't removed the protection.

Is the tool above worth running?

When I had Outlook Express for email, there was a link enabling me to select a color from several, and apply it to the body of the email. Is there a way to do that with Live Mail? Thanks.

A:Live mail versus Outlook Express

Are you using LM 2010 or 2011? I have 2011 and if you have it set to Plain Text then you can't set a color but if you switch to Rich Text (HTML) then you can change fonts and colors.

I am using Windows live Mail on a Windows 8 Laptop.
I have 6 email accounts that I use regularly.

In Windows Live Mail each account has it?s own entry complete with ?Inbox?, ?Drafts?, ?Sent Items?, ?Junk? and ?Deleted items? folders.
There is also a Windows Live Mail ?Outbox?, ?Drafts?, ?Sent items?, ?Deleted items? plus Storage folders including ?Drafts?, ?Sent items? and ?Deleted items?....These storage folders appear to be redundant as nothing is ever sent to them or saved in them.
Below the storage folder there is the ?Imported? folder which includes ?Local? folders, ?Drafts?, ?Mail? etc. which were imported from my old Email Client, Outlook Express.

When I use any of my 6 email accounts, messages are dropped into there own individual ?Inbox? and ?Sent items? folder relevant to the email account being used.
This means I have to check each of the 6 separate email accounts to get my mail.

Prior to using Windows 8 I used Outlook Express which had just one ?Inbox?, ?Sent items? folder etc. which was used by all 6 of my email accounts.

Is there any way to set up Windows Live Mail like Outlook Express....with just one ?Inbox?, ?Outbox? etc. for all my email accounts.

Thanks

Jan

Not that I know of. Windows Live Mail is the "new and improved" replacement for Outlook Express.

What is it with M$ - and why do their improvements turn out to be worse than the originals?
Live mail email handler is a case in point - beware that if you ever create and setup a @mail.com account on the thing it will wipe any previously installed accounts or logins whether you have a @live.com account or not. The contacts listing is vanished for you too.
Getting it back would have been tedious if I had not had a @hotmail.com account to install and log into instead - at least I got all my messages and contact lists back.

Is Outlook Express email data readily compatible with Windows 7 ?
Info and advice would be much appreciated

A:EMAIL -Windows Live and Outlook Express

No it's not, but you can install Windows Live Email on your XP Computer and it will backup your OE Emails to Windows Live then you can export them from Live to a Flash drive and then transfer them over to the Windows 7 Computer.

I know just enough to mess things up so please be patient. Old computer Win XP and Outlook Express quit working. Purchased a new computer with Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail, Micro Center suggested try to remove old HD and use an USB to IDE adapter to recover letters, photos etc. Worked like a charm Tried to recover OE mail and import into WLM. Followed directions I found on the web to find the OE .dbx files on the old drive. After much searching and drilling down I found the .dbx files in local settings, application data etc.copied them to a scandisc cruzer. I opened WLM and went to the import mail, it asked where to find files and I went to browse and the drive that scandisc was in, now the problems begin. The browse window in WLM finds the drive but shows nothing on it. Check the computer for that drive and inbox, sent and all the rest are there but it will not show up in the WLM browse window. I created a new file on the scandisk and placed all the .dbx files in it now back to WLM import, the browse window finds the new file I created great next I get an error message "No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open" I could use some advice on what I'm doing wrong, thanks
