Store Apps: No small icons (just rectangles)

Q: Store Apps: No small icons (just rectangles)

Hi,

wherever a Windows Store app shows a small icon (in search and on the "All Apps" screen), the actual icon is missing:

The larger icons on the actual start screen show up. Re-installing the apps does not help, and the icons of desktop apps show up.

What can I do to fix this issue?

Best,
Felix

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On my Surface 3 Pro, in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 (tech preview), my taskbar icons are blank for any Windows Store apps. The icons are normal for other apps (like MS Office, Explorer, etc...).

I am betting it has something to do with a group policy. But I can't find anyone else out there with this problem. I've reimaged the device, upgraded from 8 -> 8.1 -> 10. Nothing has changed.
When I first got the Surface - it all worked great. I could see the icons fine. As soon as I joined the device to our corporate domain, that is when the problem started happening. I have tried connecting to the internet from home (thinking it was a network/firewall issue at work) but that did not solve it.

See the attached screenshot (it's a screenshot of Windows 10 - but the same thing was happening in Windows 8 and 8.1). It does this for any of the "apps".

Any ideas what group policies might affect this? Any other ideas?

On my ASUS N550, Windows 8.1, my taskbar icons are blank for any Windows Store apps. The icons are normal for other apps (like MS Office, Explorer, etc...).

It was working before and all of sudden, it stopped working! To start with, I thought it was the graphic card driver and I did all the updates but it didnt work.

In case you need to know; my computer is not connected with any business policy, I am just using my hotmail account.

Many thanks

I have blue rectangles around the icons on the desktop. I have a wallpaper on there. One that came with windows. But i can't seem to get the rectangles to go away. I have it adjusted for best appearance. What seems to be the problem?

A:Desktop: Blue rectangles around the icons

Sorted out now. I just used sytem restore and turn back the closk 3 hours which doesn't change nothing except what ever i did to make the rectangles appear around the icons on the desktop. So i used my brains yet again. Hope this helps anyone who is having the same problem - although your system restore will only return to your last saved point. And remember if you have had malware etc. and have removed it, please turn off system restore then turn it back on again because you want to make sure that they don't come back into your system if you need to use system restore.

Hi,
Did you make any change to your computer recently? If not, the most simple method is restore your system to restore your PC to an earlier point in time for test. Please refer to the link below for more details about System Restore.

In addition, you can use Windows APP troubleshooter to fix this problem.

Also can try to perform a Clean Boot to check whether this problem caused by 3rd program or service. Refer to the link below for more details.

I am having some trouble getting the default store apps to work. As for the store itself, it used to briefly show the splash then crash. Now it is just an unknown file type that doesn't do anything when clicked. I have tried some of the more common fixes, like the powershell re-register scripts, but none work, all returning errors of one kind or another. At this point, would it just be easier to "Reset this PC", or is there another fix I may not have tried? Thanks!

I was given a Windows 8.1 tablet that once had a detachable keyboard which the guy lost. he reset the whole computer and after I got my information on it instead. After the reset, Windows was no longer activated and I had to reactivate it. which neither of us knows why, it was activated before we did a data factory reset. after I created my user, I installed a bunch of exes. now I go to try to see if I could test out the Windows Store to search for apps. but I search "Windows Store" or "app store" and several other things that may bring it up, but it always says, "no apps match your search" like if the Windows store is missing or somehow magically removed with the reset process. How do I get it back?

My Computer: Acer | Aspire V5 | Aspire V5-552G-X412 | Overview

As of a few days ago, none of the apps in the "windows" menu will open. My Store also will not boot. It opens, animates, and closes. I've tried many solutions, none of which have helped. *Note*: My resolution has not changed. It is still 1366x768.

Solutions I've tried:
1. Changing resolution: fail
2. Running "sfc /scannow" in CMD in admin mode. Result: stops at 53%, says it it unable to fix corrupted files\
Also tried opening the .log file. Says I'm not an administrator, when I have set my profile to admin. (I am the only user)
3. Clean boot, attempted to "sfc /scannow": fail
4. Using Microsoft account and local account. (I used a local account originally and tried switching to an MS account. This did not fix it.)
5. System "Refresh": says it is unable to complete refresh after reboot.
6. UAC was not changed, although I tried playing with the settings. Did not help.
7. My Anti-Virus has not been modified in any way. No firewall should be affecting this.
8. This happens on any internet connection.

I apologize if this seemed brief, I was trying to make it to the point while in class. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I may have missed some of my attempted solutions here and there, so I'm sorry if I did. This has been extremely frustrating. I really do not want to resort to restoring the computer to factory settings. Thanks in advance!

OK, i'd like to make it clear that i'm using the so-called "real" Administrator account that is hidden but can be activated, not a regular account with admin privelidges. At first i was trying to figure out if Metro apps can be used by this account, and it appeared that they cant, but managed to find a trick to enable it. i did it by making sure UAC is on, making sure that FilterAdministratorToken is set to a value of 1 in the Registry, and by enabling "User Account Control: Admin approval mode for the built-in Administrator account" (secpol.msc [Local Security Policy]> Local Policies> Security Options).

So i did a bit more research and toying around, only to discover that although i might have found a workaround for running most Metro apps in general, i discovered that syncing, d/l'ing of apps from the Windows Store, etc is not possible unless you're using a Microsoft account. Please note that any other account with admin privelidges can use the apps without a hitch, as well as any Standard account. So it clearly is not a limitation of just having an admin account, alone.

Also, the built-in Admin is the only kind of account that cant be converted from a local account to a MS Account, all other accounts with admin privelidges can do so. If you look in the Control Panel and try to make changes to the account, you will find that the option isnt available, whereas with other accounts it is. This brings about the issue of not being able to sync or d/l... Read more

A:Use Metro Apps As Admin AND Be Able To Sync, d/l Store apps, etc???

Hello Stephen, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Setting that security policy below to be enabled will basically just turn the built-in elevated "Administrator" account into an unelevated administator account that requires UAC approval to open or run anything that requires elevated rights to do so.

This would be why you are able to open the Store afterwards, but you would still need to sign into the Store with any Microsoft account to be able to install any "Metro" Store apps.
Windows Store - Sign in with Different Microsoft Account in Windows 8

You still will not be able to switch the built-in "Administrator" to be a Microsoft account. It can only remain as a local account.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

See the screenshot below for selection you have to make for not to convert your local account to a Microsoft Account:

Windows Store - Sign in with Different Microsoft Account in Windows 8

Screenshot from tutorial Skype App - Use with Local Account in Windows 8.

You of course need an email address (Microsoft Account) but it will only be used for the app in question (Windows Store is also just an app), so in the next dialog either give an existing Microsoft Account credentials or select Sign up for a Microsoft account to create a new one to be used with Store app:

Your Windows sign in account will remain local, it will not be converted to a Microsoft Account.

Hello all,

I am new here, although I did come here quite a few times and many times found the solution :-)

My problem is (I am on 1511) that some icons of removed (by powershell) apps reapeared, and there seem to be no way to get rid of them. Nothing I have found had worked (like going to start menu folder and deleting the shorcuts).

Namely it's MicrosoftWindowsAlarms, MicrosoftZuneMusic, MicrosoftWindowsPhotos, and in Apps the name looks like this: @{Microsoft.WindowsAlarms_10.1607.1991.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwems-resource--Microsoft.WindowsAlarms-Resources-AppName-Text}

Moreover, few days ago some "new" apps have materialized - that was a shock........no update, nothing, out of blue I had about 10 unwanted apps in my all apps...............crazy.

Any thoughts?

P.S. Normally I deffer updates by turning the service off and/or metered connection. Now I have left it on by mistake...........still should not install against my will some unwanted apps..........and as I said, no update.....

A:Icons of uninstalled apps showing in All apps

Those left-over icons may be a result of deleting programs instead of using Control Panel, Programs and Features to uninstall the programs. When a program is installed the install routine puts the program files in either C:\Program Files [32-bit] or C:\Program Files for 64-bit or C:\Program Files (x86) for 32-bit depending upon which version of the OS is in use. It will also create the icons, write support files to C:\Windows or other Folders and create Registry entries so Windows knows how to run the program. The uninstall routine is supposed to get rid of everything associated, don't know if PowerShell can do it as cleanly.

How can i see all the applications instead of the normal 44 apps in the store??

A:Can't see all apps in the store

Actually, I'm encountering this problem for the first time.

On my PC, with my account, I see the full library of apps available in the Windows store.

However, on my father's PC, with his account, he sees a very limited selection of titles. Does anyone know why this is? And is there a way for him to see the full selection? I didn't even realize it until I was trying to install an app on his computer that I really liked and couldn't even search for it.

I found the solution!

In the settings (charms bar > settings > preferences), if you enable (switch it to Yes) the settings for "make it easier to find...", it will limit the number of apps you can see. This makes it easier to find your preferred languages because it limits the apps to only your preferred languages.

In order to see all the Windows Store apps, you have to set the option to No.

I thought by cleaning out my WindowsApps folder it would just redownload stuff nope now none of my apps work. My question is it possible to copy the WindowsApps folder from another working pc or does it not work that way. Because I have a few working win8 pcs I could use or am I just going to have to reinstall win8

A:Windows Store Apps

Well first I want to tell you: Never ever mess around with your system unless you have got a backup (system image) at hand to restore your Windows in case desaster strikes.

To resolve your current problem I recommend reinstalling Windows. By copying those files from another PC you would most likely face various permission difficulties which would take hours to fix with no guarantee that you will ever make your system stable again. Seriously, better reinstall everything. It takes less time and the result will be much better.

A:how to open apps store

Hi tony

The trouble that you are having concerning your Windows Apps, Windows Store, and Cortana are likely all related. Just let the techs helping you in that other thread that you are also having trouble getting to the Windows Store, too.

It sounds like you are unfamiliar with how to find things in Windows 10. By all means, have a look at the apps and programs listed in "All Apps" on the new Windows 10 Start Menu. Tap or click on the Windows 10 Start Menu icon in the far lowest left-hand corner of your screen: you should see "All Apps" at the bottom of a list of icons. Select it, and see if you can find things in there (everything installed should be listed).

It's possible (even likely) that you are having a fairly common problem, and that your Windows 10 Start Menu isn't working properly either. The Windows Store, Windows apps, Cortana, and the Start Menu are all interconnected to some extent. Our tech jenae already had you try reregistering the Windows apps using PowerShell. If that didn't help, you can try the downloadable troubleshooter from Microsoft:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...t-menu-cortana

It can sometimes help on computers like yours with Cortana & other Apps issues.

So - let the techs know in the other thread & and we'll keep the repairs discussion over there.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum. I recently read advice on microsofts forum regarding app store not working. I've read a variety of reasons:
- diff between local and roaming profile (I've changed to local)
- Norton interfering with process/defender turned off
So I've tried turning Defender on but can't seem to find the setting for this and am greeted witht the message: you have this feature furnted off and go to the user settings.
I've attempted turning off norton firewall and anti virus before attempting to update apps in the store.
At present I'm unable to upgrade or purchase any apps.

I'm not keen on uninstalling Norton, although will do this if needed. However, I'm wanting to cover any other bases before I do this. I've been unable to update apps for around 6 months now and am now jack of this.

Any help would be appreciated. I have just tonight completed the windows all in one download and process to the letter from this website. It's probably fixed a lot of stuff I wasn't aware of but not my particular issue.

Thanks in Advance!!

Regards,

Steve.

PS - I run a Toshiba Satelite Win 8 Pro 64bit, 8mb RAM with media player also installed/Norton Internet Security.

A:Win 8 Pro 64 bit - store will not upgrade apps

For starters, you could remove Norton. I know you'd prefer not to but it's not as if you couldn't reinstall it later.
Once it is uninstalled, then you'd be able to go into the Control Panel to the Windows Defender feature and get it started there.
Installing Norton automatically turns Defender off.
BTW: In case you're interested in my opinion, there's no way I would have Norton run on my computer or those of my clients (I run a computer repair shop).
Moving on.
I have a question.
Are you able to install free apps? Just asking, as you didn't mention it.

The one and only time that I ran into the same problem as you have, is when I had turned off Windows Automatic Updates, as per a client's request.
With Updates turned off, you cannot download or update any apps.

Has anyone had this problem?

A:Can't update apps in store

That may or may not have something to do with my problem. For me, it affects only one app, but I also have this "hanging while pending". In my thread, I have collected a few folders that contain data from the Windows Store - maybe clearing them will work for you (make a backup!).

Have a format/reinstall getting ready to happen. Needing to back up windows 10 store apps and games. Wanting to copy to external hdd so hopefully to not have to redownload 50gb games as I only have 6mb dsl (all I can get where I live).

Not even sure it will work but it does for steam, origin etc. When I try to copy the folders to external hdd I get this message "do you want to copy this folder without encryption, a problem is preventing this folder from being encrypted". Couldn't figure out what to do after that. I saw something on google about decrypting but it's a lengthy process it seems on such large folders and I'm not sure if they would need reencrypted once moved back to folder after reinstall of windows or what. Can any one help? Thanks in advance!

A while a back ago I upgraded from windows 8 to windows 10. I was happy to go back to the classic shell look and feel. Although signing-in password changing/disabling is sadly not up to par as it should be (Can't disable pw/cannnot change back to old pw). Anyways back to my main issue the windows 10 store and apps.

Ways I've tried to get it up and working or just other problems
1) wsreset.exe- fail
2) http://www.techgeekandmore.com/2015/...r-0x80070003/- worked for 1-2 apps then failed
2.1) Renaming SoftwareDistribution to .OLD- failed
3) Every single time I run something in command prompt or admin. powershell I break the start menu & cortana or It- fails
4) I also have trouble logging into the windows store. When I click sign-in I just get a plain blank box, it's like the java script didn't load the sign-in material. I'm pretty sure my java is up to date last time I checked.

In conclusion, it sounds like I need a reinstallation of windows 10/store ; or even to get rid of system entirely (reverting back to 8). It would be a lot of help if someone could give me some kind of direction to take this, because this has been baffling me for awhile. I'm surprised Microsoft has not put out a message about this; although I did hear they pulled their recent windows store update and did update the start menu and cortana in their last update (ofc I just broke it again ).

Hello

I installed Windows 8 release preview. I see only about 200 apps in the store.
I turn off "Make it easier to find apps in my preferred languages".

Do you know where can be the problem?
Thanks

When you buy an APP in windows store is it good on all your windows 8 devices?
Or do you have to pay again for each device?

A:Windows store Apps

That's a good question. I've been running Win 8 since the first preview and have yet to buy any apps!

I've got Windows 8 running on three computers, I've downloaded a few Apps on each. Anyway the other day I noticed Flixter was on the Store so I down loaded it on to my Netbook and played around with it. While its not up to the Android tablet standard I thought I would put it on my Home Theatre computer, lo and behold I couldnt find it anywhere in the store on this computer. So I fired up my third computer W8 and its not on that store either.

Has anyone else had this problem with Flixter or any other App, not going onto more than one computer. Thanks in advance.

Suddenly I have got the entries below, which do not respond to clicking.

e.g News app is visible as tile and updating but cannot get full screen.

On programs list I have:

@ MicrosoftBingNews 4.8.239.0X86 _8weekb3d8bbwe?ms-resources/microsoft Bing News/resources/application tile

I uninstalled and reinstalled all through powershell +WSReset...nothing helped

A:App store and apps disappeared

Hi that's typically because the user ran the Powershell command to repair apps; this repair procedure has been broken since build 10586.

I recommend you do an in-place upgrade repair install.
For this you need an installation medium with the same build as you have installed.
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums
This will refresh Windows, after the manner of a Windows installation.
- all/most associations will be unchanged
- all your programs will be left installed
- you will lose any custom fonts
- you will lose any customised system icons
- you may need to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection
- you will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build you have used for the repair install

Recommendation:
Please consider using disk imaging regularly. It's a brilliant way to
- preserve your system (and your sanity)
- back up your data
- restore your system to a previously working state in a relatively short time

Recommended:
Macrium Reflect (free)
Veeam Endpoint Backup
Free Desktop and Laptop backup - Veeam Endpoint Backup
+ the boot disk/device + large enough external storage medium.

Microsoft People
Microsoft Solitaire Collection
Both updated via the Store

A:Two more Store Apps updated

I saw people, mine had some kind of sorry message and then a cryptic error code but then I manually clicked the download button and it worked. Didn't see solitaire but maybe that just automatically updated. There seems to be no way to check what apps successfully update automatically in the background which is frustrating. Means I have no idea if the process is working correctly! I presume it must be because I have Facebook app and I see no update pending etc but in the couple of months since I got my machine and installed the app there must of been Facebook updates in that time!

Hi there

If you wish to create easily custom desktop Icons from images captured then you can use the LAST FREE VERSION of ICOFX (It Used to be freeware - everybody seems to be trying to Monetise every possible item now -but the last FREE version is still available and the paid version doesn't really have much to offer if you just want to create ICONS).

Last Freeware version: DiskDigger, Amic Email Backup, Mystic Thumbs, IcoFX, phpDesigner, Xinorbis

@Brink - I added a question in your tutorial about How to create the ICONS for Metro apps as you used Custom ZIP one in your example -- perhaps you could delete the remark or refer to the above program which does it easily

1) For Metro simply open the tile and press PRT SCREEN before the application starts
2) Paste to ms WORD / WORDPAD (Standard comes with Windows enter WORDPAD in the Start box)
3) Use Snipping tool to select a reasonable rectangle of the ICON and save as PNG file
4) Import into the ICOFX program - Will create Icon for you
5) Save as .ICO file
6) Now ready to use in Windows.
Cheers
jimbo

I think it may have something to do with permissions because I just changed a lot for my account, but here it is:
On the desktop, apparently they only appear on programs or shortcuts, are small little blue emblem things pasted onto the original icons. They look like envelopes or something. Does anyone know what these are and how do I remove them? They don't directly disrupt anything I'm doing, I would just like them off because they are annoying.

EDIT: I just did something else, not sure what, but now some of them are displaying google Chrome emblem on the original icons! Someone please help.
