Solved: Networking with Sprint Mobile Broadband card

Q: Solved: Networking with Sprint Mobile Broadband card

My internet connection is through a Sprint Sierra Wireless Aircard 595U USB connection. Supposedly the card can be plugged into the router and each computer in the network will then be hooked to the internet. Unfortunately few routers (including mine) have a USB connection. So I have to plug the card into one of the three computers on my network, switching the card as needed. Someone published a solution to the problem and is a follows:

ďFew routers that I'm aware of accept the AirCard 595U's USB connection. And only one that I'm aware of, the CradlePoint CTR350,
explicitly supports the 595U. I just got a 595U and Sprint Mobile Broadband and had the same issue of setting up a wireless home network using it. I solve the problem using Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Here are the steps I took:

1. Set up the 595U as normal, plugged into a USB port on your PC.
2. In Network Connections (assuming you're using Windows), right click on the dial-up listing for "Sprint Mobile Broadband - Sierra Wireless," and choose "Properties."
3. Click on "Advanced" tab and check the first box under "Internet Connection Sharing" to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection."
4. Choose "Local Area Connection" from the "Home Networking Connection" pull-down.
5. Choose "OK" and reboot computer.

1. Hook up a new wireless router (or reset your existing router to factory defaults) with a cable from your PC's ethernet port to the number 1 port (not the WAN port) on the router.
2. Reboot your PC

1. Open your browser and access the admin functions of the router (by going to the router's default IP address - for a Linksys router, for example; this may differ with your router).
2. In the admin area, change the router's IP address to
3. Reboot
4. Get back into the router's admin functions (using your browser and the new IP address) and find the setting for DHCP. Disable it.
5. Set up an SSID and WAP/WEP security, if you wish.

At this point, your laptop should see the wireless network. Try connecting. Took a lot research/tinkering for me to get to this point, but once I did, it worked great.Ē

I followed his directions and was unable to get the internet on all 3 computers. However, my network didnít work either. All 3 of the computer connected to the new network connection but not to each other. They only recognized their own computer on the network. When I tried putting in the new IP router address in the two computers that have network adaptors, I was unable to get the Routerís new IP on either computer. Iíve since reset the network to the default network settings and the three computers are again sharing files.

I really have two questions.
1. Should the method in quotes really lead to an internet connection of all the computers on the network?
2. Why were my computers unable to recognize the other computers on the new network?

I should add that my router and one of my adapters is a Linkys.
When I set up the network, I created a new SSID, and disabled DHCP. I also set up a WPA (PSK) with an 8 character password instead of the eleven character password that was the default. (Could that cause a problem?) Also is there a difference between WAP and WPA?

It also occurred to me that the IP address may not be one I can use and get all 3 computers connected correctly. The Linkys router had no problems with that address and took me back to the router settings so that I could put my original settings back in but the other two computers didnít connect with that internet page.

Even if I am unable to get internet on all 3 computers (at one time), I would like to set up my network with greater security, (right now itís set back on the Linkys default), so would appreciate any help you could give me.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have an X1 carbon, I bought it in July 2018, I think it's the 6th or 7th Gen, below are the specs. I'm having trouble setting up the mobile broadband with a sim card in the machine. I've put the sim card in and nothing happens, I can't see any other networks to connect to or a mobile broadband option, the sim definitely works, I use it in my phone. I use a laptop computer that was issued to me by the company I work for. They provided me with an Embarq mobile broadband air card to get high speed internet. Once connected to the air card, I access Outlook to get my business emails and do work related research on the internet using internet explorer. However, I also use the same computer to retrieve my personal emails by going to Internet Explorer then aol mail. I also visit several baseball websites using the company laptop. (My son is a minor league player.)

I know that if my IT department wanted to see what I've been doing on their laptop, they can request it, do a forensic search and see where I've been.

However, can the IT department see where I go on the internet, get my aol email password, etc. from the server at the office without me knowing it, when I use a mobile broadband air card?

PS: I don't go to any bad sites. And, this was not written on the company laptop.

I have a new Dell and am using a Sprint Mobile Broadband connection and can't access this forum (using my Cox connection now.) It displays that "Internet Explorer Can't Display the Webpage." Do you think that is Sprint's fault or something in my Vista settings causing this. Probably Sprint as I CAN access it using Cox. But I want to make sure before I call them....

A:Can't Access Vista Forum Using Sprint Mobile

If you can access every other website other than this one then yes its sprints fault.

There is a simple test to identify what the ISP is doing (sprint has a history of blocking domains)

open cmd from the start menu and do the two following commands

Tracert will trace the path from you to the vistax64 host and can help identify the ISP computer blocking connection.

tracert www.vistax64.com

Tracing route to vistax64.com []

13 294 ms 293 ms 293 ms vistax64.com []
14 294 ms 293 ms 292 ms vistax64.com []

Trace Complete

Ping will help confirm the host is up and listening for website requests...

Okay I have now spent a few days trying to sort this with no success, so please can anyone help.

We have a youth bus with 4 PCs (2 on Vista, 2 on XP) connected using a switch (Prime PS-108ms). One computer has an internet connection through a Huawei E1550 on 3 mobile broadband, and we have in the past had all the computers sharing this connection succesfully.

Over Easter we took all PCs into office in order to run updates on a faster connection and then put them back on the bus. We now no longer have the ability to share the internet connection. I am concentrating on the two Vista machines first as thought this would be easiest to sort. The host computer (Bus5) has LAN Connection and Internet access via the USB modem. The client computer (Upper3) has LAN connection and I can view each computer from the other, but does not allow access to the internet.

I have been very careful to follow the ICS instructions on Vista but to no avail! Can anyone help?

Oh and also - the LAN is "Unidentified Network" and on the host PC I have to keep switching it from public to private. As it automatically reverts to public in background and on restart!

Hey, is this as simple as they make it look? Can I just plug it in anywhere and get wireless service? ( of course, not EVERYWHERE). Do I have to subscribe to that service? I currently have t mobile as a provider, so if so, I'd get a tmobile one, thought I know verizon has more coverage, in my area anyway.

I just need more info before I buy, it looks to good to be true, just plug it in and connect, have to be some kinda pitfall.

Thanx in advance

A:A few questions about those sprint, verizon, cingular, t mobile pcmcia cards?

It's almost that simple. You can indeed get access where the service provider has the service available. Note that data service isn't necessarily in all the providers coverage area, so even though you can get phone service, that doesn't mean you'll get data service. Best to check in detail about the coverage.

Hi I have a 3 mobile broadband modem which works fine with my pc. Except for Internet gaming and Limewire. It just doesn't connect to said programs. Is there some sort of reason/solution for this?

I have checked the firewall and its allowing them access, thats the limit of my internet know whats.

A:Solved: Mobile Broadband and gaming/limewire.

Try disabling the firewall altogether, and connect to a GAME, not limewire.. if you're game works, they the firewall is lieing to you, if it still doesn't work you may want to contact your ISP because you don't have a router that could be blocking packets of information from recieving/sending.

Recently got a mobile broadband dongle for my laptop, shows 7.2 Mbps speed in the status window and under activity the received bytes is shooting up, as I write this is has went from 25,000,000 to 35,000,000, that's about 10 mg for a few seconds, it does this even when I have no page open, I can't see anything in task manager, I don't know why it's downloading so fast when there's nothing there, also because of this it is slowing my browsing down, any ideas why it's doing this?

A:Solved: Mobile Broadband High Usage

Some app on your PC might be accessing the internet without your knowledge. I've never used Win XP Home, but try pressing Win+R to open the "Run" diaog, then type "cmd" and press Enter. Type "netstat -b" but DON'T press Enter until you notice the received bytes shooting up. When that happens, press Enter to see which executables are accessing the internet at that moment. It should provide a clue. Look for any exe names that you didn't install or start yourself.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I will be moving from the rented house I've been in for 21 months into a new house in the next couple of months. The house is a new-build and I will obviously not have broadband to start with - don't know if I'll have a phone line straightaway yet. I am trying to work out the best way to get online during this time.I am in the UK.

I went in to an O2 shop today and they were trying to sell me a dongle which cost £20 and then £2 a day, £7.50 for a week and £15 for a month. This would get over my immediate problem of geing broadband-lacking when I move but wasn't quite what I had in mind. I was thinking more of a dongle with x amount of Gbs (to be decided) which doesn't have clock running on it. So, after I've stopped needing it at the new house, I could take it out and about with me on my laptop whenever I wanted and when it ran out I'd top it up.

Does such a deal exist and, if so, what size in Gbs would be OK? We use aroung 10Gb per month on average but that's with the kids looking at YouTube, using iPlayer a bit so assume that just a bit of surfing would need less? Thanks for any help.

A:Mobile broadband Pay-as-you-go?

I use '3' mobile broadband all over UK. £10 per month, 1gb which is plenty for an hour or so a day surfing plus emails.

I think in a new build you'll soon have utility providers beating a path to your door!!

I have an X1 Carbon Thinkpad: X1 Carbon (Type 20A7, 20A8) Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 20A8, Model 003YMZ It has a slot for a SIM card on the back, but I don't know how to get this to work. Simply popping a SIM in there does nothing! Does anyone know (a) if this model is actually configured for mobile broadband, and (b) if so, how to activate it? Many thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forums.

I assume you live in the UK like me so I think I can help.

I use 3 mobile broadband which in my opinion is the best of the PAYG tariffs. You can buy a dongle which is the expensive bit or if you have an unlocked 3G phone which allows tethering you can use that if you know how to set it up.
You get 150MB of free data when you top up (minimum ?5 in store, ?10 online) plus it also works as a phone if you want it to.
This 150MB of data lasts 90 days or until you use it all up.
This means it works out you spend ?1.66 for 50MB of data every month, which if you have static broadband at your home should be enough. If you ever use more than this just top up more regularly.

For more info (and probably a much clearer explanation visit 3 - Pay As You Go - SIM Only - Free stuff - Free stuff with every top-up)

I don't know too much about Virgin medias mobile broadband but a good place to start would be here Mobile Broadband - Broadband - Virgin Media

Hope this helps, Oli.

EDIT: After reading your post more carefully, it sound like your do not have your Internet connection going into a Wireless router and then to your laptop and desktop.

This suggests to me that your Virgin Contract may be quite old as all new tariffs include a free Wireless router and setup, not to mention less to pay per month (I went down this road with BT, tripled my connection speed, got a load of free stuff and I now pay ?10 less per month.)

For our company laptops we have Sprint Air Cards (598U) with a Sierra Wireless app, which we use for community access, and we also have a ProCurve AP in the office for connecting to the network.

A recurring problem that has cropped up is that after being connected via the Air Cards, the laptops end up with private IPs, losing the IP assigned to them by our company network. Once this happens, the laptops don't connect properly to the APs. Windows' wireless reports "limited or no connectivity". No amount of Repair via the dialog box or /release & /renew at the prompt will fix it. The only way I've been able to get past this is plugging it in via Cat5. This fixes the IP, and I can then connect via the AP.

Unfortunately, for most users this is too much of a project, and the Air Cards are being used in the office, which negates things like printing & company email.

Is this a common issue, and is there a resolution for it?

I have a dongle to use with laptop when away from home. I have connected to O2 Mobile Broadband and will purchase credit on daily, weekly or monthly basis when necessary. The dongle claims to be a memory stick and does work in that capacity on the laptop where the O2 Mobile Broadband is installed, but does is not recognised as an external drive in the desktop computer (which does not have the O2 mobile broadband software installed. Any ideas of why not?

A:O2 Mobile Broadband Dongle MF 100

If its like my wifes dongle then it has a micro sd card inside, to read those files in another machine you need to use a separate card reader.

You could try and install the o2 mobile software on the DT computer and access it there.

Hi The card should work, has p/ns required. But might need (or not need) some efforts to work, in dependency of factory default or presale settings.

I am trying to connect a new Dell Latitude laptop with a Dell 5720 VZW (EVDO Rev-A) mobile card to our network using the sonicwall GVC. Any interface other than the VZW card such as WIFI or ethernet cable work fine when connecting and mapping drives over the internet using GVC. However with the Verizon Wireless connection, all I can do is ping our server and strangely I have no problem connecting to remote desktop. When attempting to map a drive on the laptop using the mobile broadband I get the error message "The network location cannot be reached." almost as if I never was within reach of the server even though I can ping it and RDP! I have Netbios enabled on our VPN so I don't believe that is the problem. Numerous calls to Sonicwall support have left me with nothing. Any suggestions would be VERY appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help that might be offered. I'm running Vista.
