After update ThinkPad Yoga, 20CD cannot POST!

Q: After update ThinkPad Yoga, 20CD cannot POST!

After running updates the computer will no longer POST.Turning on power only boot cycles (turns on for 3 seconds, turns off, turns on etc.), screen is black, no POST.Possibly a BIOS update fail? Need to spend a grand to get a new MB?? Tried removing the battery, drain power, use only power cord. No luck.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I wish they would stop pushing BIOS updates other than at the request and guidance of support, they seem to fail too often and brick far too many systems. You can usually perform a Boot Block Recovery on modern motherboards, but I do not think Lenovo has implemented that technology on their laptops for security reasons, but you might still check with Lenovo Support to see if they have any options short of replacing the system board. BTW: Does your system have the emergency reset hole on the back side of the case, and if so have you tried unplugging it from the power supply, and then pressing it for about 10 seconds or so? (see item #1 on page 46 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual) Hardware Maintenance Manualhttps://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/s1_yoga_hmm_en_sp40a26742_01.pdf

My S1 Yoga, 20CD-00B1US, is stuck with the screen off and the power LED stuck on. When I try to push or hold the power button it beeps two short beeps and the LED stays solid. I was running the Lenovo Bios Update Software directly from their site. The power cord was plugged in and no other programs were running (aside from background programs). Now it is just stuck like this. Any thoughts or help would be great. I can't even get it to force shut off. Thank you in advance!

Lenovo Yoga 20CD will not power on after shut down yesterday. When I plug in charger the red dot above the "i" blinks three times. I have removed battery, held power for five seconds and put battery back in, no change

I'm facing the same issue. Suddenly it won't power on. Only LED indicator blinks when plugging in the power supply; and the LED turns on for a few seconds without plugging in the power supply. Beside that nothing happens. Any clue how to solve this? I've checked the connectors but they look ok. I've also tried resetting via "reset button" on the backside. further I've tried several sequences pushing the power button and holding it for 30 - 60 seconds. So far nothing helped. Any clue? Thanks.

Long story short, i erased everything and performed a clean install of Windows 10 64bit and the computer stopped shutting down or go into sleep mode. I had Windows 8.1 64bit, i upgraded it to Windows 10 about a year ago, when it first came out. The upgrade went almost fine, some bit issue with the OS but nothing serious, so i went on till i decided, to correct those little issues, to perform a clean install.  So i downloaded the media creation tool, the version with the anniversary update, and erased everything, but keeping the recovery partition. After the install, i started having troubles with entering sleeping mode or shutting down the laptop.I installed the power management driver i found on the site (n1cku04w). With that I can shut down even if it strangely blinks a few times before shutting down. I can enter sleep mode and wake it up properly if I do it from the start menu, but if i close the laptop or try using the power button takes me to a state where OS is sleeping and HW is still awake, so i can't do anything apart from force it off. Strangely too, the driver on the site is overriden from another version i recieve from System Update app. But, with the version from System Update app, i can't even shut it down properly, the OS dies but the HW is still awake and fully functioning leading me to kill it pressing the Power Button. Anybody have faced the same issue? If somebody with the same laptop still has Windows 8.1 can he tell me, someh... Read more

They do not appear in device manager and reinstalling drivers did nothing. On Lenovos advice, I purchased replacement palmrest, trackpad, keyboard etc and fitted them successfully but this has made no difference. Could it be a power management issue? I've updated PM drivers. Motherboard damage? As far as I know no water or physical damage has occurred.

Hello to everyone,I'll need your help. I installed a new, fresh Win 8.1 operating system on my Yoga S1. I also mount a new Intel SSD in the place of the old HDD. So it's way faster now I need to have a HDD password, also a start-up password. So, i set the same password (I'm sure, double-triple check it) for supervisor, power-on and HDD password. I enabled the password on restart option. So here is the problem - when i power on the Yoga, it asks for the power-on pass. I enter it and it is corect. Then, it shows that it enters the HDD1 pass automatically and it is succesfull. The system boots and it's fine. But when i press Restart from Windows, it powers off, ask for power-on pass - correct, then it asks for HDD1 pass. It's the same and should be automatically filled, like in cold start. Ok, it enter it manually, but it is incorrect. I also tried with blank pass, but without succes. So, after three incorect passwods, it freezes. Then, I power off completelly, start again, enter the power-on pass and it's fine, it boots the OS. So, it's not working on restart, but cold starts are OK. As I said, I checked many thimes that the passwords are the same. Please advice guys. Thanks to everyone

A:Yoga S1 (20CD) Strange HDD password behaviour

Do you still have the 2.5: drive also?  I have seen this behavior once before in a machine with a 2.5" drive and an M.2 SSD.  It turned out that the problem was related to the 2.5" drive, even though the bad pw showed up on the M.2 drive at restart.  My 2.5" drive was originally from an HP and there was something screwed up in the HP firmware that interfered with the M.2 drive.  It took me a long time to figure out what was wrong.  It also might have the same symptoms with an HP SSD

My wife's Yoga just today stopped charging or turning on.  It was working seemingly fine before and would last several hours on battery (so don't think the battery was at the end of it's natural life).   The little blinky light on the over no longer blinks when plugged in.  There's 0 sign of life.  Here's what I've tried: 1) Hold power button for 20 seconds (both with and without power plugged in while holding before plugging back in after)2) Push the reset button with a pin for 10 seconds (again, with and without power plugged in)3) Used voltage meter to validate 20V from power supply. Also tried a second power supply.4) Removed cover and used voltage meter to validate 20V at board soldier points for the power jack (so power reaching board)5) Checked all chips, hard drives, connectors that were readily visible to make sure they were tight. Nothing when plugging back in. Questions:1) Anyone know of any common remedies or things I can look for?2) Any general guidance on getting something like this fixed? (ie, send to Lenovo, find a big name store like Best Buy, other?) Thanks!

I needed to replace my keyboard on my Thinkpad Yoga 20CD, so I swapped parts, and long story short, no post, no BIOS, no external video.  When I plug in the AC adapter, I get 3 blinking red lights on the "i" Thinkpad LED.  If I press the power button, the backlight on the keyboard comes on for 1 second, fades away, and the red LED stays on.  Fan on the CPU spins for about 3 seconds, then stops.  There is a chip on the motherboard underneath the card reader that gets EXTREMELY hot on both the AC power and battery, even without turning it on.  I guess I just need to know if I somehow fried the board when swapping parts?  If there is a short somewhere on the board?  Is there anything I can do to get it to boot, and prevent it from getting so hot?  I've tried a complete power drain, removing the CMOS battery, and leaving it sit overnight with nothing plugged in, all to no avail.  Any help or suggestions wold be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, hopefully someone can help me. Back when my laptop was still under warranty, I complained to Lenovo about the many scratches I was getting on my screen from using their pen. I don't press hard when I draw, and I even bought replacement nibs just in case there was something sharp on the one I was using. Alas, nothing helped. This didn't happen on the last tablet Thinkpad (X61) I had! At the time, I couldn't afford to send my laptop in to get it repaired. I was in the middle of a VERY busy college year. But now, the scratches are so numerous, it's really affecting my ability to work on it. Is there a way to just... replace the matte finish? Looks like it's like a screen protector to me. Is that something I can purchase on my own, or would I nee to take my laptop to a repair place to get it put on correctly? I tried to see if I could take the thing off myself, but I can't even get my fingernail under a corner. I HOPE it's a screen protector of sorts, because there's no way I can afford replacing the entire screen.

Hello all. My laptop used work perfectly until the day I decided to remove all the extra stuff by doing a clean install of Windows 10.  I predownloaded all the drivers I would need and then did the clean installation.  Now I have an issue with my wifi.  It randomly drops connection to wifi and is slow to start working again.  After coming out of sleep it does not automatically reconnect to the ap and I have to trigger it manually.  Separately (i think) when coming out of sleep, the login screen does not respond to the keyboard and I am forced to use the mousepad to click or a touchscreen swipe to get to the password field. What I'm seeking is an official list of drivers that are required for a clean windows 10 install on a thinkpad yoga series 20CD.  If order of installation is critical, please give this also.  I believe I downloaded everything available from the support page but just want to be sure.  Sometimes not all drivers are available when filtering by OS "Windows 10".   Thanks in advance. Laptop specs are:512gb ssdmemory card slot2.4/5 n/ac wireless 7260ac w/bluetooth

One of my end users has a ThinkPad Yoga 20CD-00BYUS. He's one of the few users in my organization with a Lenovo device. His hard drive failed. I've purchased a replacement, but don't have any setup/recovery media. Is there a way to obtain this? I can't seem to find a way to do so on the Lenovo site, at least not for a device out of warranty.

A:Yoga 20CD hard drive failure - recovery media

If the machine has been upgraded to windows 10, you can download (free) from Microsoft.  To obtain the media to recover your machine to its original configuration, you can call 1-800-426-7378 and tell them you need to purchase a recovery set for a machine out of warranty.

I will add that Microsoft does not make it easy to apply security and driver updates to a newly-recovered windows 7 system.  If you had win 7 and you ever want to upgrade, now is the time.

I have a TP S1 Yoga (Model 20CDCTo1WW) running Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit. I utilize it mostly at work and have it hooked up to a Thinkpad Onlink Pro Dock.  I use the dock to run two external monitors, for connecting to our network (through an ethernet cable) and utilize the USB ports on the front/back to hook up a wireless keyboard/mouse, for powering my phone and for thumbdrives.  I had the problem of the Onelink having port "flapping" issues (network would disconnect and connect at random times) as discussed elsewhere in these forums.  The solution that I found was to update the bios.

I proceeded to attempt to update the bios (which I had not done since I purchased it in January 2014).  The current bios version is: GQET32WW (1.12), 1/22/2014.  I downloaded the TP Yoga bios update utility for Windows 8.1 (64-bit), Version 1.18.  I read the README and then ran the utility.  It installed the utility software to a location on the local drive ("c:" ) and then proceeded.  I went through the setup screens, selecting the "Update ThinkPad BIOS" clicking through a few more text boxes (with the warning about not powering off, keeping it plugged in, etc) until it asked to reboot. I clicked OK to reboot, which it did.  This is the next thinkg I seen on the screen:

Hello,  I used the Lenovo-Tool to automatically check what needs to be updated and followed the recommendations. It was a NVIDIA-Driver update for security reasons and about 10 - 15 other updates. What I noticed late was that there was also a Bios update recommended and selected. However, I tursted in Lenovos automatic update meachnism. The updates ran trough, despite the NVIDIA-Update which was marked by a red cross. Also the Bios update started and mentioned not to turn off the computer. A Dos-Box under my Windows 10 appeared and disappeared and the computer wanted to shut down - which was happening in a normal way. But now the screens were black, the computer was off. After a while, I switched it on again - the fan went on again but nothing happened.  Which means: - The screen is black all the time (as if it was broken, no text is displayed)- External screens, connected via dockingstation or HDMI are black- Computer did not display anything when connecting a bootable USB-Stick with free DOS- Interestingly, the computer is warm and the fan sometimes changes its speed. What can I do now? I assume that something went wrong with the BIOS-Update. Is there anything I can do on my own? Can this problem be fixed by Lenovo? Thank you for your replies! Best regards Nic4

This sounds a lot like a prior thread about porblems with BIOS 1.08, but that thread ended up marked as solved, while for me the issue returned on the latest BIOS update to 1.12. My CPU temp got up to 92C without the fan coming on. Conclusion: there still seems to be some kind of condition where the BIOS completely disables all cooling. I think it's the same problem as that earlier thread, and it's clearly not solved. Thankfully it IS possible to get out of this state by rolling back the BIOS version to the one that worked, instructions are posted here and three posts below that for further clarification.  Symptoms: you start noticing that the TPY gets oddly hot during normal use, or it experiences a forced shutdown due to overheating. It's also completely quiet. But: the fan itself is operational because you hear it briefly spin up during cold boot.  Given that LoneSentry mentioned that the problematic BIOS 1.08 did work on second install, there seems to be some 'random' glitch in the update process or in the BIOS. Meanwhile I'm pretty unhappy that I'm having to do continued truobleshooting on this machine.   Edit: going to the BIOS update page I saw that a newer BIOS was available (1.13), which you can install without having to disable Secure Rollback. Lo and behold. the fan is working again. The fan started blowing full speed right at the start of the EC flashing procedure. This is NO... Read more

I am still fighting with "260 will not wake up from sleep problem" described in my post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-S-Series-ThinkPad-Yoga/ThinkPad-Yoga-260-cannot-wake-up-from-s... I tried everything, fresh restore (5 times), boot from linux live, the laptop can't manage correct sleep, hybernation and even a simple shutdown. I can only switch on and off by pressing power button for more than 10 seconds. I tried to update the bios (from the lenovo website or from a bootable ISO) but it does just half of the job, when it tries to restart do finalize the process it goes again in a frozen state and can only restart by pressing power button for long time. Ok my laptop is out of warranty, but this has been clearly caused by a lenovo update, before that the lapotp was performing perfectly. There are several people with thinkpad reporting the same problem, lot of them with my same 260. The last one IDENTICAL problem 4 days ago: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-S-Series-ThinkPad-Yoga/Yoga-260-Does-not-wake-up/m-p/3930549 This is unacceptable, I went to a lenovo assistance and they asked me 750euros to change the motherboard. WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER LENOVO. I would like to hear an opinion from a Lenovo operator reading this forum, if any.

Said clean install went flawlessly with Windows 10 installing the first time with no issues or errors. Since I had performed a clean install, all my previous apps, including the stock Lenovo apps, had been deleted. I had anticipated this and only really desired to reinstall the app that automatically adjusts the screen orientation when folding the cover back. So in an effort to find this app and any Windows 10 related updates that may be available I went to support.lenovo.com and used the handy Lenovo Bridge app to automatically detect my hardware and suggest relevant updates. While combing through the suggested software I noticed a BIOS update that noted added support for Windows 10. I have tried multiple time to install the Thinkpad BIOS UPdate - 7/8 [32,64]/8.1/10 [64].
I follow instructions to plug-in and close all programs.
The installing bars will not complete past 91%. There is a prompt that asks to pick Thinkpad or Model Number. When I click Thinkpad and NEXT the computer SHUTS DOWN immediately (right after warning not to shut down or damage may occur). The computer screen goes black and 3 ominous beeps repeated 3 or 4 times sound. When I restart my computer nothing has updated.

I am unable to complete the Critical Update after trying 4 or 5 times. (Tried downloading and deferring install and the same thing occurred.)

(In tandem, I'm getting numerous STOPCODE errors from Microsoft after updating with the Fall Creators update. Not sure if it's related. I've had a variety of problems since the Fall Creators update and was hoping the BIOS update might clear things up.)

Any advice?

So, when you press and hold the power button, it doesn't shut off?  It is a new machine, almost certainly with a warranty.  Don't mess with it.  Call support

Get a messagebox saying "battery not detected" and it's not charging from mains. So laptop has now turned into a desktop... as needs plugging in continually... making it almost useless for purpose. This happened exactly after firmware update a few weeks ago. By coincidence the management software also kindly informed me that it could manage the battery better and stop it wearing out by only charging up to 90% - fair enough, but don't treat me like a muppet and disable it without any way to get it back. Tons of Windows 10 updates today (after not being able to use it for a few weeks) but still no battery. I tried F1 BIOS but nothing there to enable the battery (only to disable it). This is frankly a joke - timing shows it's due to the firmware update because the battery was fine and lasted a couple of hours right before. In 25 years of countless laptops, have never had this problem - batteries weaken gradually but don't suddenly lock up and require a paid replacement suddenly. How do we run down our original battery properly before polluting the planet? Phil

Hello,     I was recently prompted to install the following updates but I am unsure as to what they mean and if it is absolutely necessary/recommended to install them. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.  Edit: My BIOS update also asked me to choose from two options: Update BIOS or Update Model number.  I have updated neither as I am unsure what it means and why I see that message. Can someone please tell me what it means? Thank you.

After performing the May 15, 2018 update, my touchscreen no longer works.  The Wavcom device in device manager is hidden and shows "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)"  I have done extensive searches in this site and in google and have been able to find a solution.  It was working fine before the update.

I've spent the last 7 hours trying to get my programs to work correctly, however it appears to be an Intel Graphics Driver issue. 4 (3?) programs I want to work:Blender (open source 3d modelling)Krita (open source painting)libGDX (open source Java game framework, based on GLFW)GLFW (open source C++ OpenGL library) I've read: https://developer.blender.org/T51521Which is the exact issue I have. This is aparently fixed in a new driver from Intel, but Lenovo hasn't released it for the Thinkpad X1 Yoga (2nd Gen) yet.Can those in the know please give an update for this?

Hello everyone, Lenovo System Update keep asking me to install version 10.0.56.3002 of Intel Management Engine Firmware on my ThinkPad Yoga 12 (Type 20DK) running Windows 10 Pro x64. Once I install the update, a cmd window pops up for a fraction of a second, then my PC restarts. However, the installation seems to fail as System Update keeps asking me to install the update again after the reboot. I understand that this update is security critical and therefore want to resolve the installation error. I've done a little debugging by running MEInfoWin.exe and FWUpdLcl64.exe in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ME:The update seems to fail indeed, as MEInfoWin.exe still reports my FW Version as 10.0.55.3000.When I try to manually run the upgrade, I get an error:C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ME>FWUpdLcl64.exe -f ME10.0_5M_Production.binIntel (R) Firmware Update Utility Version: 10.0.56.3002Copyright (C) 2007 - 2017, Intel Corporation.
