How to read warning that appears and disappears too fast to read on startup

Q: How to read warning that appears and disappears too fast to read on startup

Whenever I boot up my VAIO (VGN-SZ750N) laptop an all-blue screen appears only momentarily, so that there's no time to read any of what is clearly a very wordy warning in white typescript that fills the whole screen. How can I stop this long enough to read it and take whatever action it recommends?

then, something happens that may be related to this . . .

soon afterward, a boxed message appears saying: "System has recovered from a serious error . . . " Clicking on this results in a huge number of figures that would challenge anybody who attempted to write them down.

Preferred Solution: How to read warning that appears and disappears too fast to read on startup

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hiya-Hello. (Osu, I feel bad, two topics on BC right off the bat. Too many computer problems. Sorry for the somewhat spamming.)

I'm in the process of trying to repair my good friend's laptop.
EDITED: It's a Compaq: Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005,HP, Presario V600.

Here is the problem: The laptop starts up and shows the main "Compaq" screen. With the press Esc for setup, and so forth.
If you try to run Windows normally, you get a lovely blue-screen of death.
Safe mode is the same.
And last know good configuration, also gives a blue screen.

Here is another issue. I do not even have a second to read the error message when the laptop will restart.
I want to know if I can find a way to view the message without tweaking the Control Panel (I can not reach it.)
And, if this is a driver or hardware issue, that can, or can not be fixed.

Anyway, thank you for checking out my topic, and for any assistance you can provide me with. : )

Whenever I boot up my X395 Thinkpad, an icon briefly appears and disappears at the lower center of my screen. It's a side view of a face, with a finger held up to the lips. I'm pretty sure it's a Thinkpad icon and not a Windows or app icon.It doesn't seem to be related to audio settings or mic settings, since these have their own icons. It seems to be telling me that something is being muted, but I don't know what.Any help appreciated!.

I have a Philips standalone DVDR 75, and I was always able to play DVD+RWs created on it in my Optorite dd0201 burner, and as for those DVD+Rs that got messed up by the Philips, I could always extract most of the recordings as raw data using iso-buster.
It had started getting awkward before I upgraded the firmware, but now it won't read any disks, in any way, that haven't been finalised. Worse than that, it completely disappears from my computer until I take the Dvd out and reboot.
is the problem likely to be with the Opto, or the Philips?
when I did the firmware, had shows the most recent one, but now I'm wondering whether I should have used the older firmware first, and then the latest one, but no instructions were given about this on Optorites website.

A:Opto DVD burner disappears when asked to read!

Could simply be that one or the other is on it's last legs as you mentioned you had problems before the FW upgrade. Try a Philips disc in another rig or pop your burner in another rig.

My XP SP2 just keeps rebooting with a blue screen.. I have to take it to work for a disk wipe and reinstall. I have about a year's worth of Opera, Firefox, Internet Explorer favorites/bookmarks on there that I do not want to lose. They were not saved or exported prior to the the death of this XP install. The XP install IS NOT bootable. I am accessing it with a Linux LiveCD like Knoppix (but not Knoppix). I would really appreciate it if you can tell me where to find the bookmarks/favorites for these browsers so that I can save that file or folder to a thumb drive before they are lost forever.

Hi all,

I recently started using ReadyBoody on my Sandisk Cruzer Edge 16GB USB, and when I needed to copy files into the USB, I could simply go right click USB > Properties > ReadyBoost > turn off ReadyBoost.

However, now I have a message " this device is mounted read-only. This usually happens with write-protected media or when BitLocker Policy's setting has prohibited write-access ..." but in actual fact, I hadn't done any write-protection, nor turned on BitLocker.

I can't format it (though, I wish I could, if I could), because it is says it is write protected, and I have tried formatting through Safe Mode with Command Prompt too, no success. Also have tried using PNY UFD UFIX II Formatting tool, with no success.

I have also turned off BitLocker settings so that it allows writing, but to no success. I've also seen a couple of posts regarding going to regedit and changing that values in Storage Drivce Policies and usbstor to "0" but with no success.

My USB has no write-protection button/ switch on it either.

The strangest thing is I can see the ReadyBoost Cache file on my USB. It's not an issue of turning ReadyBoost on or off (so please dont start going on about how useless it may be like some other threads ...), but an issue of reclaiming my USB.
Anyone that can help me reclaim my USB? Thanks all

A:Cannot turn off ReadyBoost from USB, disk appears to be read-only

To be frank, if this were my Stick and there was nothing on it that I needed then I would bin it. There is clearly a problem with it so it cannot be trusted not to fail next time you use it. Not worth trying to save. They are so cheap nowadays!

Lets start with this.

I have an asus p5p800-vm mobo, a pentium d 2.6ghz (i know the d isnt the best but whatever), 2gb of ram, a creative sound blaster audigy se, 1x80gb sata 7200 rpm hdd, 1x200gb 7200 rpm sata II hdd, 1x250gb sata II 7200rpm hdd, and a saphire radeon x1650 pro with 512mb ddr3, sony dvd player, and lg burner.

Not a horrible pc to my standards.

Now WoW runs fine (my subscription is running up and im bored of it anyway), and genereally speaking prey runs fine. Now Wow never used to run. Basicaly everygame except prey the videos played fine, liek everythign worked except when I went to play games its like i had a sticky keyboard all my commands would lag to **** but the mouse was fine, video was smooth etc. So i formatted and the same problem was there. I bought a new copy of windows xp pro and it has ALL of the updates on it, and everything. Then WoW worked fine and prey would run a bit better, I also noticed a slight increase in pc performance.

Now except for the above two games all the video lags, like its really choppy (even on lowest settings), and I have updated all the drivers. I have had this problem for months and its driving me crazy as I have soem games I woudl liek to play and I cant figure this out.

Ok, so you did some hardware check, you have multiple hard drives, which one is the os on? I see that you reformatted, did you try putting stuff on another HD, if you have multiple items/programs pulling from all these drives at the same time, it could cause some issues, did you think about that? Obviously its not your vga, and I high doubt its the keyboard, lol.

Help! I suspect my HD is crashing... again. I keep getting some type of a box flash on my screen... it has a blue header and is a black box, looks like a DOS command or something in the blue header. But, it flashes so fast sometimes I can't see anything at all, and sometimes I can see enough to see the blue header and black box. I think the blue header has a DOS command, or an address in it (maybe something like D:\volume ??). I can't really read what the header says, it is just too fast. I don't see anything in the box. Any suggestions, thoughts? I did a virus scan, ad scan, spyware scan this morning and had no viruses or ads, a few things came up on the spybot scan but I have gotten rid of them, rebooted and the same problem. Have also deleted all cookies and temp internet files and still the same problem. Again, any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Has happened 2 times in the length of time it has taken me to type this, and I type pretty fast. Thx.

To make the long story short, I ran combofix before reading the warning against doing so.

Having read the warning, I can fully appreciate the admonition not to, and I consider myself lucky as it appears I have been spared any damage to my system.

Regardless, malware was found and removed. I am quite certain what was removed was malware, as I had previously detected the software at issue as malware and thought I had successfully removed it from my system, and it turns out I was wrong.

The malware appears to have been using my video card as a bitcoin mining device, which is consistent with the symptoms I was having. (Vaguely unresponsive at times, but little network activity.)

The intense use of the video card actually caused a failure of the GPU (Nvidia underfil problem), which I corrected using the heat-gun reflow technique. That's off topic.

Combofix found and removed this file along with the bitcoin files, but, as is stated in the instructions, the log should be submitted to check to see if there are other infections. I do not know if this is even possible, since I never ran DSS before combofix, however, if it is possible to analyze the log any further, I would appreciate that.

I did run the dss script after running combofix and have included those logs. I don't know if this will be helpful or not.

Thank you for this wonderful tool, and my apologies for using it incorrectly. I'm sure I will be back on this forum in the future.

This came from Merijn's web site.

April22, 2005:
Just a short note on the domain HIJACK-THIS.NET: this is not mine! It has been registered by XoftSpy (who are also on the Rogue Antispyware List on SpywareWarrior.com) and they are luring people into downloading their software believing it is HijackThis. Also, they have registered a few AdWords at Google leading to the same result. I have contacted them about this and received no reply (how surprising). Google can't do much about it since there is no copyright being breached. We'll see where this goes.

Solid state?

USB zip drive?

I've been using a 500gb Western Digital usb hard drive I picked up at Best Buy and it seems to be quite slow at reading/accessing the data. I believe a solid state hard drive or a usb zip drive might be the right product for what I want.

I use it for storing mp3 music on to put in my car. the WD drive works decent but when browsing around my 24,000 song collection stored on the drive, it becomes a little laggy/bogged down sometimes and I believe a better/faster reading drive would be worth the money to me.

How to disable the Firefox .NET Framework Assistant installed by MS.
In a recent update of the .NET framework Microsoft silently installs an extension to your Firefox browser if it is found on your system. This extension enables websites you visit with Firefox to silently install software on your computer, thus injecting the most serious flaw of Internet Explorer into Firefox.

Microsoft installs this extension in such a way that it cannot be removed directly by the user -- it is listed in the Extensions list but Uninstall is disabled.

This is not a bug -- this is the intended functionality of the Firefox extension, probably to enable Microsoft to install software on your machine when you visit their websites with Firefox instead of IE. This extension introduces a serious security vulnerability to Firefox. It should be removed immediately, using the instructions below.

I repeat a friend sent it to me, but called and warned me before I opened it. He was not so lucky and now he can't even start his computer! Forward this to everyone in your address book. During the next several weeks be VERY cautious about opening or launching any e-mails that refer to the World Trade Center or 9/11 in any way, regardless of who sent it. On boot-up, the AMI POST screen flashes by so fast there's no way to read it.

I have tried various BIOS Quick-Boot, Full Screen Logo, Force BIOS settings, together with mashing the keyboard's Pause/Break key. The 'del' key only takes me into the BIOS itself!

None of these work. I see the red and blue (I think?) AMI boot screen for about 1-second then it's gone followed by a normal W7 boot.

How can I read those start-up POST messages? I know this is a common problem, but has anyone ever solved it? Taking a video of the monitor screen during boot-up doesn't count as a solution!

Hello all (and Karbo, if you're looking in)...I can't reply to my thread of last week (IE closes as soon as I hit Reply)...My problem has devolved further. First I managed to make the Internet Options menu inaccessible, and now I can only boot into Safe Mode. The problem seems to be right after the XP splash screen - it displays a Blue Screen for maybe 1/4 second, not long enough to read more than a small word of the error message. No desktop. It then reboots continuously with the same symptoms. I have rolled the registry back with ERUNT, but the blue screen persists regardless of how far back I turn it, so it appears the registry itself isn't involved.

Worse, my PS2 keyboard driver doesn't load in Safe Mode, though the wireless mouse does work..? So I am unable to log in to get to the desktop. Any ideas where to start that doesn't involve reinstalling XP? Batch virus "MeLT" * Creates the hidden file "MELT_2A" in the temp directory * Infects files in the current, parent and all path directories * Infects one batch per run if less than ten infected files encountered * After detecting ten infected files it displays a graphics screen effect * Adds one line before the host batch and appends the rest * Will not run if attached to AUTOEXEC.BAT (but infects it)This batch virus is much more advanced. It takes control from the host immediately, runs the virus then runs the host batch. The host is run in such a way as to disable the virus until the host is completely finished to avoid slowing down batch files that call themselves in a loop. Simple appenders are very obvious when on such files, but this one causes no significant speed loss except at startup. This virus carries a harmless payload which is assembled with the debug command - it 'melts' the screen in a flash of color then returns it to normal before running the host.vx.netlux.org

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this

A:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

A:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Backup, backup and backup is the mantra when it comes to important data...

I tried unchecking read only.
When apply and look it is back to read only.

How can I make this read and write permission?

A:public tv folder read only? mythtv needs read write persmissions

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

Nice. I had scrutinized it hard enough already with a steel hat, so I'm still safe.

Hehe, Veesta is a beast! Most corps, even NIST, MIT, UDoD and ASUS as the largest MB MFG detests it. Not fit for mass consumption eh.

A:dvd drive can't read dvd movie, but can read data dvd or dvd games

Shot in the dark...

Go to the Device Manager and find the entry for your DVD. Right click it and select properties then "Region" and make sure a region is set for the drive. Without a region set it won't play movie DVDs.

Using outlook 2003 and a pop3 server to access my webmail email, i am able to send and recieve. However when i read my emails and close outlook the items remain unread when i check outlook later. This happens quite often and is very annoying... any help is appreciated.

A:Outlook 2003: not marking read items as read

Outlook Express has a tab to fix this-maybe Outlook has the same.
check Mark Messages READ after displaying (add 5 seconds)

Maybe that seconds number has been raised above the time you take to scan messages. OE doesnt care IF you peek at a message-it cares HOW long you stare at it.

Ok I just spent about three hours looking in this forum to solve my problem and no dice.

Here it goes: I'm running xp pro and I have a Norcent RW-481 48x12x48 CDRW probably not the best brand but oh well. I'm using Nero 6, InCD is not installed.

The problem: It does not recognize any data CD's or any CD's that the drive itself writes. I can play an audio CD, which elimates (I think) that the read lense is dirty and I can burn a CD, which elimates (I think) that my burn lense is dirty. I'm mentioning dirty lenses because a post in this forum suggested that a dirty lense may be the problem. So, before taking things apart I wanted to post in the forum the problem. Any other suggestions of what else I can look for?

More info: I even switched around the jumpers from cable select to master, same result.

I really believe I have a setting wrong in my XP pro operating system. Any suggestions????? :cronfused:

Lastly, The drive is recognized corectly in device manager

Greetings. I would like to find out whether customers read my emails, but without obligating them to use a "read receipt" dialog box. Is there a way I can do this?

I know Constant Contact offers that as part of their service, but I would rather save the money.

Thanks in advance.

A:how can I confirm email read without using read receipt?

There are other ways to get confirmations, especially ones that spammers use, but I am not keen on posting them on the forums.

I already know how to create a "read" receipt for sent emails. From my understanding, when you set the function, I will received read receipts for all email that was read. I was wondering if this setting could be set on individual emails instead of all of them. Thanks!

A:Read receipt for read emails in Outlook 98

In the compose area of Outlook go to Options and check the box for that email.

Hello everyone. I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 (two, three days ago) and I'm having a problem with my World of Warcraft Addons. I'm thinking the problem is due to parts of my World of Warcraft folder being read only. In the Properties menu of the folder, the "read only" check box is not checked but filled in with a little blue square. Now being a windows noob I'm not 100% sure, but I'm assuming that means it's read only. So I unchecked the box, pressed okay but if I open the Properties window again, it's still got the little blue box.

I've ran a few virus/malware scanners, and I don't seem to have anything. I've installed all of the Windows updates and I'm still having the same problem.

Thanks in advance everybody!

A:Read only folders revert back to read only

By default all folders with Files in them, the properties are Read Only (Only applies to Files in Folder) Meaning that if the actual file within the folder isn't Read Only, the rest of it isn't either. (test this theory on any other folders on your computer) so that is not your problem with WoW

A:XP startup problem please read

Try visiting your hard drive manufacturer's website and download their diagnostic utility to check your hard disk for physical errors.

Also, if you boot up in safe mode, does it do the same or does it stop at a certain file and/or give an error?

Hi All,

I'm using Outlook 2003 on Widows XP. One of my rules includes "Mark As Read" after moving the email to a folder. It does get marked as read, but the tray notification (envelope) still appears. This defeats the purpose for me, and actually makes it harder (I use multiple folders, so I hunt through each to find the new message). What am I missing, or is this a glitch? I just want it to be marked as read, and NOT show the tray icon.

Thanks in advance!
