I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:plugging in a switch for power

Look at the documentation and it should show you which pins on the switch header are the correct ones. With out you providing any information we can not even begin to answer that question properly. You should always include system specs if when you ask for help finding a solution.

Hi I've been using my X220i for the last 3 years or so and decided to upgrade to an i7 X230 a few days ago. After a few days of no problems, using the same charger I've been using on my X220 (the 90w slim travel charger) I plugged it in to charge while the laptop was powered on. The laptop powered off instantly and now it will not power on again. There are no status lights visible and nothing happens when I plug it in. I have done all the steps of removing the battery and pressing the power button etc and on putting the battery back in the fingerprint sensor light was flickering orange - it is now back to no signs of life at all again other than the left side of the palmrest gets hot when I insert the battery. I am strongly suspecting a fault with the charger fried the motherboard when I plugged it in but am wondering if anyone else has any suggestions before i try to make a claim within my remaining 1 week of warranty. Thnaks

The past few days, my laptop has been freezing after about 20 minutes (lately the amount of time has been decreasing to now about 15 minutes). First it would only freeze if it went idle but now it's freezing randomly. It would only freeze when I plug in my charger.

I replaced my adapter to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't. I also tried changing my set up so that my computer wouldn't sleep but still, it would freeze. I also launched CCleaner to try and clean up my registry and though it did fix up some problems, yes once again, my laptop would freeze.

I installed several anti-virus/malware programs as well but none of them seemed to work. They wouldn't detect anything through quick scan but once I try full scan, it would freeze. I tried going into safe mode, but before making it in, my laptop would stop and go into regular mode. And just a few minutes ago, I got the blue screen of death.

Please help!

That means your display driver is not usable for windows 8 and windows 8.1. I would advise you to download and install Windows 7 display driver in compatibility mode and review if it helps.
There are few steps to set up window 7 display driver

Install & download display driver
Right click on the driver & go the properties
Select compatibility’ tab and test the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for” and click Windows 7 operating system from the drop down.
Finally click on button ”apply” then “ok” and run the file to install it

A:How to enable sound when plugging/unplugging charger for laptop.

In the System Sounds, there is an option for device connect or disconnect. This will probably do what you want. You will have to assign a sound for those functions.

The System Sounds panel can be accessed from Start/Control Panel/Hardware and Sounds. Click on "Change System Sounds".

Hi, my new Acer V Nitro laptop makes a short, beep tone (coming from the speakers) when I plug and unplug the charger. I have read online that it is due to the driver and/or BIOS and I have done everything to disable it (installing new driver, searching for options in sound menu of Windows, going into the BIOS settings...). Finally, I have found the solution: deactivating the autostart of Realtek Audio driver on Windows start. Do you think that it is normal to hear this tone? I have completely reinstalled Windows and the tone finally reappeared (only after installing all updates). Thanks,

Hi, Well it makes a beep to tell you that the charger has been plugged in. Nothing wrong with this. It makes the same beep when you unplug the charger. It is normal, and it is implemented on more acer notebooks, not just yours.

I recently bought a wireless 3G USB modem / hot spot. Although i use it primarily by plugging in my PC USB port, It just occurred to me that my smartphone charger also has a USB port. So i was wondering if i can use the modem by using the charger USB port or not. That way i will not have to keep my PC powered on all the time. My charger has a output rating of 5V and 830mA. I reckon there shouldn't be a problem but want to be sure lest i damage the modem.

Just noticed this whenever I plug or unplug the charger. The laptop lags for 1-2 seconds before returning to normal. This is noticeable when playing games or watching videos. Haven't seen any abnormal drops or spikes with the temperature of the CPU, GPU and HDD which would suggest a hardware issue. Tried doing this while running 3DBenchmark, and there is a huge drop in FPS, from 130-200fps down to almost 16fps esp. when unplugging the charger. Is this normal?

I have recently bought a few Microsoft wireless display adapter for my projectors and I really wish that microsoft would roll out a firmware update that would cause them to power down (even if for 30 minutes) after a preset time (that could be set in the

my power down the drain. I have tried a hack by putting a electric timer on the usb adapter than i am powering it on, but i software solution would be much easier.

Hi there,

It will tell me that "Windows cannot save some of your changes to this plan's power settings. The system cannot find the specified file." Lastly, before the new harddrive I had a power-saving battery mode. Now it does not exist.

Hey there.

I was wondering how Power Plans work. Say, I have my Power Plan set on Balanced. Now it'll adapt to the Balanced settings for plugged and unplugged respectively.

Now say, my computer needs more power for a task I'm performing while I'm not plugged in. Will it be able to push itself to it's capabilities, or would it stay restricted? How about when it's plugged in?

If I would rather have "High Performance" settings when I'm plugged in, and "Balanced" when I'm not, is there a way to do that? It's clear that Power Plans work even while being plugged in, but I see no need to limit the PC while you aren't on battery.

Thanks. XD

A:Power Plans

Hello XD, and welcome to Eight Forums.

All of the default power plans have the same options. It's just that each one has it's own preset settings of each option. You of course can set these how you like though.

Since your PC uses a battery, you will be able to set your power plan options to what you like for when you are "Plugged in" and "On battery" for the same power plan. This way you will have two separate actions for the same setting depending on if you are "Plugged in" and "On battery".

I've just done a clean install on my Dell Inspiron 7537 laptop. I had a Dell supplied power plan on the previous W10 installation (upgraded from W8.1). Where are these plans stored so I can recover the previous Dell plan?

A:Where are Power Plans Stored?

Hi, a quick test indicates the relevant area (you'd have to explore further) is here:
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Power\User\PowerSchemes\381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e\238c9fa8-0aad-41ed-83f4-97be242c8f20\29f6c1db-86da-48c5-9fdb-f2b67b1f44da\DCSettingIndex: 0x00000258

However, what the structure is for a complete scheme I don't know.

Given that you've done a clean install, I'm a little puzzled as to the source you'd use to recover one.. a disk image maybe? And would it really be worth the effort?

All my Windows Vista-on based desktops have always had problems sleeping/turning the monitor off. I can usually pull off a scheme for a while after a clean install but eventually it will regress to the point where the schemes just flat no longer work. On my most recent format, a Windows 7 64 PC, I am now at this point. I set a power plan to turn the monitor off after 10 mins and go to sleep after 20, but the computer does neither after the appropriate amount of time. This also happens on my girlfriend's current Windows Vista 64 machine as well.

I remember hearing about the potential for various programs to interfere with sleeping, but I was wondering how I would go about diagnosing which program, or what in general, is interrupting my PC's sleep/monitor off cycle?

A:Problems with power plans

I wonder if the anti-virus could be the culprit. What A/V are you using? Try disabling it, for the time being, and see if your problem goes away.

Hello friends, I am having a strange problem with my home network.

I have a my HTPC plugged into a 5-port switch along with my Xbox 360, PS3, and U-Verse TV box. Naturally, all 5 ports are being used with line 1 going into my router. There are 3 other computers in my house plugged directly into my router.

My problem is that my network ceases to work whenever I plug in the switch. I am neither able to access the internet or view any other computer on my network for file/printer sharing. Running ipconfig shows that I have no LAN/internet connection. If I unplug the switch and plug in the components individually, then everything works normally.

I have tried 3 different switches but I am getting the same result. It is very inconvenient to have to manually unplug and plug in my various game consoles and TV box in order to enable them to access the internet.

Any ideas?

Just a quick question(might seem kinda newbie) for Win7.

Does setting your computer to "high performance" actually make your hardware "maximized". Or is "high performance" just a setting that doesnt make your monitor dim(or shut off) as fast or your computer go to sleep as fast. The same goes for the other two settings(power saver and balanced). Do the power plans actually increase or decrease your computers performance when running games, etc?

Thanks in advance.

I've spent way too much time on this and it seems basic so I'm hoping someone here has some insight for me. The task seems simple; we need to create designated power plans that users can select between but can't alter.

In detail, we want 3 plans; High Performance, Balanced and Tablet. We want users to be able to choose whichever closest meets their needs at that moment. However we do NOT want them to be able to change the tablet plan to never sleep, for example.

We can force this with a GP Preference that resets everything every single time, but users are complaining about that because they go in and manually are changing the settings (because the interface lets them) and then our policy updates and overwrites it.
The high volume of complaints has management requiring that I disable the forms to prevent the confusion.

Is there not a way to disable the individual settings but to still enable the ability to switch between the plans?

P.S. Our environment is Windows 7/8.1/10 and the behavior seems to persist in each OS.

Can I make Dell Audio (or something) automatically route the sounds to my headphones when I plug them in?  I didn't see any option within the Dell Audio menu to toggle that option.
I do quite a bit of work in my school's library, meaning I need to be quiet.
The problem is that when I plug in my headphones, I have to wait for Dell Audio to pop up and then I have to confirm my selection of "headphones with microphone" before any sound will go to them.  Only then will the sound go to my headphones.  While I do this, my computer starts dinging and beeping all the latest notifications for anyone nearby to hear, until I do the confirmation.
To make matters worse, if I plug in my headphones on the Windows lock screen and then sign in, the Dell Audio pop up never comes up; however, I still get the Windows notification center give me a notice, but it is non-interactive.  So then I have to unplug the headphones, wait for all the alerts saying that I unplugged something to go away, then plug them in the again.  If I don't wait for the alerts to clear, the Dell Audio selection windows won't load.  Again, the dings and beeps are going once I sign in and do all of this.
Of course, this is all provided I didn't mute the audio before I closed the lid the last time I used it.

A:Dell Audio - automatically switch to headphones when plugging them in.

SOLUTION: the pop up menu isn't clear.
If you toggle the option at the bottom saying to not pop up each time something is plugged in, it will just automate whatever it is you plug in (at least I can confirm that for 'headphones with microphone').
The way the radio button is phrased, simply sounds like it's just meant to turn off the pop up and nothing more.

Hi,

Straight to buisness: When I change power plans, let's say from "Power saver" to "Balanced" the changes does not take affect immediately. Any ideas?

Background:

I have just started using the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc), and these are the following changes I have made, and nothing else:

"Hide the notification area"
"Turn off all balloon notifications"
After this the sympons to the aforementioned problem occurred.
So my initial thoughts are that when I created a shortcut to <Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options>, the changes won't take affect immediately. Before I used to just right-click the power icon in the notification area, but as mentioned, I have hidden the notification area, so I can no longer do this.
I have also tried the following guide to create power plan shortcuts:
Power Plan - Create Shortcut to Change Power Plan
That does not work either, so I'm stumped...only way to make the changes (for instance from "Power saver" to "Balanced") is to either reboot or log off-log on.

A:Problem when changing power plans; changes won't take effect immediate

There are some system changes that you can make which can take effect immediately, some which require the user to log off and back on again, and some require a reboot. If in doubt, a reboot is probably the best option.

I recently have been trying to add the hibernate feature to my power button but when I went to do so it became apparent to me that my system for whatever reason can't retrieve any power plan information.

I have researched it online and attempted pretty much everything I have found...multiple elevated command prompts, updating the BIOS, etc. but to no avail. One option said to try and make a new user account and see if the power plans are available there in order to copy them over but when I went to make a new account, the button did nothing. It appears clickable but when I interact with it nothing happens. Not sure why any of this is happening but it seems I am not the only one.

Any insight would be helpful!

Hi there,

When at home with my laptop, I use external moniotor, mouse, keyboard. Notebook lid is closed. To use it this way, I had to choose a desired effect of lid closing, that is "do nothing when lid closes" (since I use polish language Windows, it may sound different in english).

It seems like this applies to all power management plans. It is a bit of annoyance, since when I'm on on the go, which is basically everyday, I want my machine to go to sleep when I close the lid, instead of "do nothing". That means, I have to either change the options on a daily basis or click start/on - off menu everytime, which is not very convenient.

I tried to create a custom power management plan and specify the desired behaviour for lid closing, but dint find the solution.

My question is - is it possible to have different actions performed after closing the lid, according to power plan that is in use?

OS is Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Thanks in advance for your help, folks.

A:A question on custom power plans and effect of lid closing

Hello BGSH, and welcome.

This is an interesting question.
When you changed the setting to "Do Nothing", was this made in BIOS or in Vista?

If it was in BIOS, then no, it has to stay. If it was in Vista, then yes you can. There are three preset powersettings. Choose the HighPerformance one for when you are plugged in at home, and set the "Do nothing" there. Then open Max Power Saver (or something) and set it to whatever you need for that. That should fix it up for you.

G'day,
Looking for guidance re: a really hot machine and missing power profiles/control.
I just received by new Dell XPS 13-9360 Core i5-7200U X2 2.5GHz machine today.
I've been modifying power options, and found that I ONLY have a balanced profile with very little control over settings. I have no access to what others have mentioned, such as power saver or high performance. All I've been able to view or change is setting options to sleep, hibernate, or turn off.
I've accessed this through the control panel and the intel graphics settings.
I only use laptops on a hard surface. It was shrink wrapped new, so the vents are likely not blocked by dust.
My main concern: Using only word and a web browser, my keypad is already running quite warm. I'm not a gamer, I haven't been watching videos, but within 20 minutes the keyboard itself is really warm. The fan is running continually. Since the entire point of my laptop is to do a lot of word-processing writing, email, and research browsing, this doesn't bode well for my main source of work. I purchased the xps13 for great battery life, but it seems to only be granting about 4.5 hours.
What are my options or possible solutions?
