Realtek Ac97 Audio "this Device Cannot Start. (code 10)"

Q: Realtek Ac97 Audio "this Device Cannot Start. (code 10)"

HP Pavillion zx5000
Intel Pentium 4
3.20 GHz
Windows XP Home Edition SP3

My friend's laptop is having trouble recognizing its sound driver (Realtek AC97). The hard drive was replaced and the operating system reinstalled a couple months ago, and ever since then it hasn't been able to play sound. Under the Device Manager, Realtek AC'97 Audio has a yellow exclamation point next to it, and under its Device Status it reads "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device, as well as downloading the most recent driver (the most recent seems to be 4.04), but to no avail. I'm not sure what else I can do at this point.

On other boards that I've looked at people have asked what motherboard was being used. I used Everest to find the following information under "Motherboard":

CPU Type Intel Pentium 4, 3200 MHz (16 x 200)
Motherboard Name Hewlett-Packard Pavilion zx5000 (DZ313U#ABA)
Motherboard Chipset ATI Radeon 9100 IGP
System Memory 1024 MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type Phoenix (02/16/04)
Communication Port ECP Printer Port (LPT1)

Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Realtek Ac97 Audio "this Device Cannot Start. (code 10)"

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Realtek Ac97 Audio "this Device Cannot Start. (code 10)"

OK you probably thought of this first thing but don't laugh when I ask: after the clean install, did your friend run the motherboard disk for his machine? Because the AC97 drivers are on that cd. He should disable it in "devices' and install the driver from the mobo cd and then enable it again and reboot. Should have sound. Only other thing is it could be disabled in the bios - you could check that too.

I don't know if any of this is related, but I wanted to provide as much information as I could for you gurus to deal with. So here's what happened:

I left my ASUS K55A laptop in sleep mode. I opened the lid to wake it up, logged in, and then everything started to load really slowly. This hasn't happened before, and the computer quickly BSOD'd in that new Windows 8.1 fashion. It restarted and scanned/repaired my D drive, again in a very slow manner. It took maybe 20 minutes just to get to the login screen (as opposed to maybe a minute). I login, and again, everything's very slow. This time, I just hit the power button and reset the laptop that way, hoping it'd fix things. Unfortunately, the same thing happens. After doing this about 2 or 3 more times, each time spending about 20 to 30 minutes, I just let it run after I log in. I manage to click the "Restart" option on the side after waiting eons for it to respond to my clicks. I get it to load and it booted up normally.

Or so I thought.

My D drive was suddenly inaccessible and my little volume speaker at the bottom right had the red X beside it, saying "No Audio Output Device is Installed". I spend another billion years trying to fix my D drive, changing permissions and allowing full control, and eventually getting full access again, most likely with some unknown ramifications. I found out after that although my C drive didn't suffer from the same problem as my D drive, the C drive would keep asking me f... Read more

From your description, I'm going to suggest what I try to avoid at all costs. Do a complete reinstall. I know its a hassle but sometimes its what is needed.

Backup your user data to some external media (USB flash drive, CD/DVD media, etc) first as the reinstall will wipe it all out. Then do the reinstall, using the recovery mode that I assume ASUS has (most PC vendors have a recovery partition on the hard drive that will allow restoring to the original factory condition).

Hello. I just recently updated my Lenovo Y530 Ideapad to Windows 7 Ultimate x64 from Windows Vista Home Premium x64. After I updated my laptop, I went to adjust the sound and I noticed that I had 3 sound devices that all said Speakers. I then went to the Device Manager and saw that under the Sound, video, and game controllers tab that one of the sound drivers said "High Definition Audio Device". Before upgrading to Windows 7, the driver said it was a Realtek driver. I have tried to get back the Realtek driver, however, when it finishes installing I end up with no sound. Is there anyway I can get back my Realtek drivers?

A:Realtek Driver replaced with "High Definition Audio Device"

Download the latest Realtek driver.

Or, you can get the Lenovo older driver, which may be more compatible with your hardware.

I've spent countless hours trying to fix this. It started out with me wanting to enable the "stereo mix" option and so following a youtube video I proceeded to updating the driver using device manager > update driver and after restarting, I received this error.

I then downloaded the newest driver of the manufacturer website (realtek hd audio) realtek.com and installed it. Mind you, the stereo mix option did in fact show up, although I couldn't make use of any audio since I was getting the "no audio output device is installed" error.

All this time, I can still see the mic/line-in inputs, and headphone/speaker outputs in the sounds (control panel). I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, and using the roll-back option for drivers. Although from control panel, I managed to uninstall the sound card software for realtek. Between all of this, after any sort of install or uninstall I also restarted my computer.

I downloaded the drivers from the HP site (PC manufacturer for my comp) and the Realtek site (sound card creator) and all of them are giving me the same results.

Furthermore, I even tried the System Restore and it wouldn't work complaining about an anti-virus when all of mine are already disabled. I checked what the System Restore would affect too and nothing for my driver was in there as far as I know.

I'm really not sure what my options are now, and it's sucks not having any sound.

Please help me out! Thanks!

I just reinstalled windows today (not a full format) and after I got it back up and running it ran perfectly... exept without any sound. So I popped in the CD that came with my mobo for it's onboard sound (nForce4 chipset, 8-channel sound) and installed the Realtek AC'97 software drivers that came with it and what I was using before the install, when it worked perfectly. Well it showed up in the device manager and had no device conflicts anywhere to be seen, but windows didn't seem to pick up that I had it installed and it wouldn't let me select anything for my audio device in the "sounds and audio devices" menu in the control panel, everything there is just ghosted. There's no lil speaker icon in my taskbar for volume control, and when I click on volume control in the Entertainment tab in Accessories, it says I have no "Audio mixer device" installed. Well Realtek AC'97 is my freakin audio mixer device damnit, why won't it pick that up?! I have it installed and have uninstalled and re-installed and updated several times and it still won't detect it and let me use it as my audio device or mixer device! I need help ASAP, I'm a big gamer and can't go without sound. Also, system restore won't let be go back before I reinstalled windows either to get my sound back. Can anyone help me with this?! It'd be GREATLY appreciated!!!

That dxdiag "no sound card" message is misleading as I've found it says that if no driver OR sound card. I think you're missing the right driver

Also, it would seem from your post you have High Definition (HD) audio. Which means you'll need to find the right High Definition audio driver. (AC97 pre-dates HD audio so the Realtek AC97 couldn't be right)

Try starting on the HP support website HERE and enter your model number or they have a button where they'll try to identify your product and drivers for your model. They should list an HD audio driver there

Hey hello everyone, I am new member here. I already checked couple threads with this same title, but I didn't really find any solution.

Here's a thing. Yesterday I went to clean my computer for dust, so I opened case and unplugged all wires. Now everything is backup except there is no sound. In device manager I got that yellow/black '!' next to Realtek AC3'97 Audio. I reinstalled drivers couple times already, but nothing. I mean, I was just cleaning dust...

So I came up with that idea that it might be the problem with the front panel pins, which I probably connected in wrong ways. I don't even know in which way those pins should be facing when connecting. So the motherboard is Asus A8N5X (from 2005, yea old), computer runs on Windows XP SP3. I tried many combinations with those pins, but nothing. I get that yellow/black '!' next to device or I get nothing at all (it won't show the device at all).

I tried reading the manual, but the wire names are different on the actual wires than shown in the manual:

And the names on wires are:

GND (black wire)
GND (black wire)
Mic Bias (yellow)
Mic In (green)
Spkout L (red)
Spkout L (red)
Spkout R (white)
Spkout R (white)

As you can see names duplicates. So I tried various combinations, but nothing. Once looked like I fixed it, after loading Windows up, there was sound icon in the tray, but PC suddenly restarted and next time there was no audio again.

Like I said I unplugged all wires befo... Read more

Hello all!

So, I've just installed a fresh version of Windows 7, coming from Ubuntu 10.04. Everything seems to work smoothly, except for the little problem of having NO SOUND! I've tried everything I can think of or find anywhere on the internet, and nothing seems to be making any difference. The sound symbol on my taskbar has a little red circle with an x, and it states "No audio output device is installed". I've downloaded oodles of drivers (realtek, ones from HP, chipset driver for intel as well as the nvidia one, ricoh card reader driver, etc., all 32bit, which is what my win version is); some will install, some come up with errors, but neither seem to make any changes. Through device manager, I've disabled/enabled, uninstalled, deleted, had it check for drivers. I've used windows update to see if perhaps it had any solutions. Nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any advice/ideas I could try? If you do, please use layman's terms to get there. I'm usually very good at troubleshooting, enough to get by with few problems most of the time, but I'm not up on all the technical terms. I can include screenshots of anything if it would help. I am on a Compaq Presario V3020US notebook, with an intel centrino duo processor. I'm not completely sure of other specs, but if you know where I can find them, I shall look there. ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

A:"Audio output device not installed", code 10, presario v3020US problem

I notice you mention the chipset drivers. In most cases the chipset drivers must be installed before installing sound drivers. If you haven't installed in this order, give it a try. I've also seen cases where the install was not initially done with the correct install sequence and after many different tries, it finally will take a new/correct sequence install to get everything working. On many PC's the correct install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install motherboard chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers including video, sound, ethernet, etc. The chipset drivers are key to a successful install as one of the prime things they do is define (identify) all the devices on the motherboard.

Also, it could be a BIOS problem. Make sure the audio is enabled in the BIOS. You may want to reset the BIOS and see what that does. Check the Compaq BIOS resetting procedure (on most desktops you can just Power off the PC and remove the CMOS backup battery for about 10 minutes, but that's not alway easy on a Laptop).

Hi All

As i was playing COD last night my PC froze and when i rebooted i had yellow vertical lines on the monitor. I went to the device manager and under the display adapter theres now a yellow exclamation point. The message that is there is -"This device cannot start. (Code 10)".
I had a quick look at several forums and have a feeling my card might be dead. Any suggestions before I assume that?

I had the PC put together about 4 months ago. I did have a problem with a defective mother board that was fried about a month after purchasing. That was replaced by the manufacturer and was told it did not affect any other parts of the PC.

A:Nvidia Geforce 8800GTX: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

Start by wiping the old drivers and reinstalling the newest WHQL drivers from www.nvidia.com and make sure to download a small app called "Driver Sweeper." After you uninstall the display driver from the Add/Remove Programs list (don't restart yet), run DS to completely purge all of the video driver files from the system. Once that is done, restart the computer and proceed to install the new drivers for the card. After another restart try the game again and if it still causing freeze-ups or vertical lines have the card replaced, it's probably faulty vRam.

This is my issue:

Sound has been working great. Used it everyday up until last Friday. Went on a weekend trip, unplugged the pc from the power surge protector. Came back Tuesday, Turned on power surge protector, plugged pc and accessories. I didn't even turn on the PC yet and it seemed to try to power up itself. The power button was blinking frantically and a synchronized sound came with it. I pressed the power button to turn it off, turned it back on after a few seconds and it started up. No sound at the welcome screen. Played a video on Windows Media player, no sound.

Opened up the PC to look at the MOBO, and I have an attached sound card. Can't be loose right? So I contacted eMachines cust. service and chatted twice with 2 different reps.

First rep got remote access from my pc and downloaded Avance AC97 driver from the emachines site and reinstalled the driver. (Which I did the day before). He told me it would solve the problems. Restarted the PC and still I'm having the same problem with my sound card.

You dont need to get into the bios.

Go into device manager and under display adapters what exactly does it say?

There are 2 ways this can be done but more information is needed.

What video card do you have and please describe what driver you were trying to install.

Hi everybody! ('Hi Dr Nick!")

I'd like to share with you all my experience with this manifestation of raw evil in the hope that someone might be able to give me a solution. I bought this laptop off a certain, well-known internet auction site at Christmas and had it shipped to the UK. It came with XP installed and a set of copied system restore discs (i.e. not original) and a pair of Sony software restore discs (same). Everything worked wonderfully and I was generally having a jolly nice time with my new uber-portable laptop. However, I loath XP and I wanted to install w2k so I checked that there were drivers on the sony support site and went ahead with it.

Nothing worked.

I say 'nothing'- the touchpad worked, but all the cool stuff like the internal wireless, the jog dial and the power panel didn't. So I gave in and did a system restore to XP using the CDs and everything worked again.

Except the wireless.

It gave me the error message in the subject line and despite fiddling about with a whole heap of stuff, restoring XP to SP2 twice and even trying other drivers for it (including the original ones from the XP install it came with that I had copied as a precaution against just this sort of digital mishap) - nothing can get rid of this darned message!

I have lost track of the number of times I have uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them. I do it daily now every time I come home from work just as an act of faith, in case Jesus or Buddh... Read more

Windows 7 64-bit I'm using an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor My audio is working, but I'm getting "popping" noises every 15-30 seconds and it's really bothering me. I updated to the latest driver for Realtek AC'97 and I insalled the Realtek HD Audio drivers, but only the AC'97 shows up in the device manager. When I got to add/remove programs, it shows that HD Audio can be uninstalled, but I don't know if that means it's working. From reading around on the internet, some people said the HD Audio driver solved their problem, but I'm not sure if mine is actually working or not. I don't know much about computers, so please spell things out explicitly for me so I can just follow directions.

Hi Guys,
New to this forum, have searched this problem on the internet but found no answer. I have had to recently re-install Windows XP after a nasty virus wrecked my computer. Everything was working great afterwards except the sound. In the Device Manager it says that my sound hardware (C-Media AC97 Audio Device) is there but has a yellow exclaimation mark on it. I have tried updating drivers through windows, uninstalling and re-installing, and deleting and re-installing. But every time I get an error message This device cannot start (Code 10).
I have downloaded Belarc and have my computer spec if it is relevant(what a piece of software btw).
PS. I'm not exactly a computer whizz!!

Mods, if you feel that this thread is more of a "Windows" issue, please feel free to move this thread.

Here last year I did my second build because I was having "boot" issues. Wasn't certain what exactly the problem was at the time. But something some how screwed up the boot sequence in my system, and where everything was pretty much "outdated." I just went ahead and did another build.

Though, since then I've been pondering around with the thought of using a SATA to IDE adapter so that I can retrieve what ever salvageable data I can from one of the two HDD's that was in my last build. So I finally broke down and ordered a couple different one's earlier this week.

Unfortunately, I've been running in to some problem(s) when I try to launch with the IDE in place.

Upon initial launching, the boot sequence seem to take some time longer than it normally does with out the IDE HDD in place. Though after a 15-20sec lapse I'll get an error screen displaying an windows error code of "0xc000000e" with a prompt message below stating "The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible"

I searched all over online to see what that error code represents, only to get "pages after pages" of sites with each site telling me something different.

I have no intentions of using this as a third HDD in my system. I just want to retrieve select data from it.

I'm experiencing slim keyboard not being recognized in the Windows 8.1
The keyboard was working fine until just one day it just stopped working.
I tried factory reset literally 8 times along with most recent BIOS update and dell's recommended update software. + power setting --> disabling power saving on USB
It still come up as unrecognized each time even with fresh reinstall.
I was wondering if this is a hardware issue or just software bug from factory reset.
I don't think there is a available driver for this kind of problem is there?

Ok... before you say its time to buy a new comp, it costed 2000 so yeah, dont

Ok so basically, i run a dell dimension 5150, and after some nut named phlos gave me something that deleted part of my windows boot, i had to reinstall windows, and first thing i realised is that i had no audio, so i searched around, and i was told to install a plug and play enumerator so i did so, and i realised i now had 2 of them, then realising that everything inserted was showing the duplicate error after that point, i couldnt get rid of the plug and play so i went to the extreme and reinstalled windows AGAIN
this time after having a fidl i discovered that if i tried to install my soundcard it no longer said it didnt exist and it worked yet i had no sound coming out of my speakers because they were plugged into intergrated (was saying before hand) however this is a basic one of the dell site and not the one that came with my package, and i found the disc and tried to install it, and halfway through ( it didnt say any errors) i got a blue screen of death displaying that it had something to do with "NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" or something like that so after rebooting it there was all these muff ups and errors and i no longer had working volume controls, so i reinstalled windows again (lol) this time i tried to install the basic and it didnt work so i am now well and truley lost, feel free to ask me questions, i just zoomed through this

ps. i have 2 audio options on my pc, intergrated ... Read more

For the onboard, visit the dell website and get the latest driver from them.
If you want to get the card working instead then google and get everest home edition and use that to identify it.

Which ever you use, the other needs to be disabled in bios (for on board) or removed(for card).

I need to always display the default audio input and audio output device currently on win7.
Would like to launch a small program on change as well or instead.
I tried to use task scheduler but was not able.

A:need "always on top icon & msg for "default audio input/output device"

Do a search on this forum. I think someone found a program to basically do what you want.

However, I just created a shortcut on my desktop to the Sound Panel/Playback section where you can change default playback devices. Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound. RIGHT Click on "Sound" and then click to create a shortcut.

The audio input is another issue. If you set the default Recording device to the Stereo Mix then whatever input is used will be heard. In recording programs, select the Stereo Mix as the input and then whatever input device/port is used will be recorded. e.g. Mic, Line In, etc. Also, the Stereo Mix is needed if you want to record audio from the Internet or sites such as youtube.

Hi all, I've searched through the various threads on this issue, and aside from the complaining and finger-pointing, it appears 'Enhancements>Environment/Speaker Fill' seems to be the only option, which merely gives the illusion of true 5.1 surround sound.

I've just today downloaded and installed the latest Realtek driver (I think I'd forgotten to do that from since I installed the 64-bit version of Windows 7 - and yes, I made sure the Realtek drivers were the 64-bit ones, from Realtek's own website), and it didn't make any difference.

I still haven't yet figured out what it means/why it says "Device In Use", exactly? Does it basically mean they're not working for some reason?

My specs are there to see, anyway. I'll be glad to see the back of this problem for good!

ps. is there anything else I need to download other than that Realtek Driver (in the context of what motherboard I've got [or whatever] - if that makes a difference?)?

A:Realtek 5.1 Surround "Device In Use" problem (only stereo works)

You can try using the Realtek software.
What happens when you select Environment / Room from the Realtek software, do you get the 5.1 experience?.

Hello, this is my first post here on this forum.
About a week or two, I Downgraded my Computer (Dell l502x) from Windows 8 to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bits, installed the drivers from the Dell Page, and everything worked good, except for the Realtek HD Audio Driver Version (Recommended for my PC on Dell Website), This is the problem:
When I Start my computer, a message shows up with the following error: "Realtek HD Audio Manager has stopped working" and then, I Have to close the message and open Realtek HD Audio Manager again from the Control Panel. I Have already tried re-installing Windows and the error keeps appearing After I Install that driver, I Was wondering if maybe that version of the driver is faulty or something (It would be weird, since it's the one Dell recommends for this computer on the page)
I Have visited many forums, including this one looking for a fix to this issue, but I have not found a solution yet. So I was wondering if someone had this issue before and has a solution to this annoying problem.
any Help would be appreciated, Thanks.

Here's a picture of the issue im having when I start Windows 7 (It's in Spanish, but I think you will understand it)

A:"Realtek HD Audio Manager has stopped working" at Windows Startup

Try the R275 version on the RealTek site. Its the latest version and will work on your PC. When you run the Realtek installation the first thing it will do is uninstall the current version you have installed and then restart the PC. After the restart it will continue and install the R275 version. This is the version I have on all my PC's for both Win 7 64 bit and Win 8 64 bit.

Download the High Definition Audio Codec R.275 64 bit OS version.

BTW, here is the info on posting screen shots on this forum. You con't have to upload them to a host.

Hello friends;
i really really need your help in this one.. i just bought LOGITECH x-530 5.1 Speaker system.
when i go to "Realtek HD Audio manager" and choose "5.1 speaker" the "rear pair" is grayed out!
Here is a picture;
Now i know this;
if i change it to 7.1. then the "rear pair" will appear and i will be able to preform the test and hear sound... B-U-T ---> when i will play movies.. (divx, mkx, bluray.. ect'...) i don't hear the people talking.. it's like the wrong sound configuration information goes to the speakers. it will seem the people talking coms from the sub-woofer.. and again really really dim... .+ the rear speakers will work but very low (even when i put it on full volume) .

any idea how to set up correctly the sound ? so even if i am on 7.1. the sound will go to the speakers as 5.1 and send the right information to each speaker?
Thanks !

A:Realtek HD audio 5.1 speaker "rear pair" is grayed out

I believe this is because in the Realtek HD audio world, the surround speakers are sides, not rears. In a 5.1 config, tick the sides checkbox and plug your black audio cable (rears) into the grey input.

As an alternative to plugging black jack to grey input, you can right click the black input in the "Analog back panel" graphic and "Retask" that input to sides.

Hello. I've got a basic problem I guess: I messed up with the Realtek microphone settings and selected "Set Default Device". I just solved my own problem and thought others might benefit, since I could not find the solution using internet search.

My Realtek HD Audio manager seemed to be creating an echo on my "Line In" audio signal. I had already set the 'environment' and 'equalizer' sound effects options to <None>, but the echo persisted. I found the problem seems that I was essentially duplicating the Line In audio stream.

The first "source" I found was the HD Audio manager. You can open the manager and view the 'Line In' tab - mine had a non-zero playback volume (the slider was NOT all the way to the left for zero playback). If you want output from the HD Manager, that makes sense.

I also found out a second Line In "source". It was in the 'Line In' properties settings where I had checked off the option to "Listen to this device." When I disabled that, the echo disappeared.

To view this 'Line In' properties tab, right-click on the speaker icon in the notification area, then select Recording Devices (yes, "Recording"). Then, the tab will display in a window with the title 'Sound'. You should see the Line In device in the list. Right-click on this item and select Properties. The 'Line In' properties window pops up. Then select the 'Listen' tab. UNselect 'Listen to this device'. The echo should disappear if you're experiencing my ... Read more

I've posted this on another website forum, but they haven't replied and it's been five days now.

Let me start from the very beginning!

I have an Acer Aspire 3050 Vista 32-bit Home Basic laptop. If you need anymore details, please let me know.

A week ago I finally figured out that you have to mute the speakers in Realtek HD Audio Device so the sound would play through the headphones. About two days after that, no sound would come through the headphones, but would come from the speakers. So my sister suggested we un-install Realtek. I did and then I re-installed it and re-started the computer.

When the computer booted back on, a little thing at the bottom said "installing latest drivers" and then I had to click "allow" to let it search for audio. A few moments later, a box popped up that said it found the audio device but "This operation requires an interactive window station." Yes, that one...

I have enabled UAC since I don't have to click allow on the restricted areas, and I have tried many many suggestions from other forums, but none of them have worked.

I know it's not a hardware problem considering when I'm in BIOs and try to go backwards, beeps come from the speakers so they are working fine. And I'm guessing the "No Audio Output Device is installed" is because I'm not able to update the drivers. Also when I go into Device Manager, there isn't an option for "Sound, audio, or... Read more

Dear all,

my speakers do work. When i plug in my headphone at front the speakers get replaced, means I head everything through the headphone.

Headphones themselves aint shown under "Sound":
It appears that both, speakers and headphones are used as one source for audio-out.

However, I want to use both. Headphone should not automatically replace Speakers.

What do I make wrong? Setting for simultaneous Audio can't be found with this new Realtek R2.75 as previously?

Thanks a lot for your support!

A:Realtek HD Audio Problem: Headphones appear as "Speakers"

Hi and welcome to 7F. You won't see a separate entry for standard headphones in the Sound properties and normally you would find the option to disable front panel jack detection in the Realtek Sound Manager and often they seem to bury that option somewhere obscure so try to look for it again in the Realtek Sound manager

Hi all, I just recently upgraded to Windows 10, and came to find out when I went to listen to my music that the bass sounded absolutely horrible (rattling and sounding like a broken speaker - and I assure you, my speakers are not broken). Days before my upgrade I tinkered with all of the settings in iTunes and on the computer and found the perfect sound for these built in speakers, so I am very disappointed that such beauty was ultimately destroyed by a new (supposedly better) driver - which was literally updated yesterday (7/30). I am very frustrated with this situation and have tried to roll back the driver to the original and update and uninstall, and nothing seems to have that good sound that my new XPS 15 had even before any settings or levels were changed. So is anyone else having this problem, or am I the only one? I have researched the problem and have found absolutely nothing. And if you know what's wrong, is it on my part and a matter of changing settings, or has RealTek totally screwed over their newest update?

A:Windows 10 Realtek "HD Audio" Horrible Quality

I am using the Dell XPS 15 L502x and facing the same issue. After windows 10 upgrade the sound is horrible and there is too much base. I tried downloading the drivers from the Mediatek website but still there is no improvement. Would really like to get back the original sound from the JBL speakers for which the XPS series is well known for.
