Thinkpad Edge e550- Function Key is always depress...

Q: Thinkpad Edge e550- Function Key is always depress...

Hello, I have a Thinkpad e550 that I bought last year. Yesterday while typing my term paper I realized that some of the keys(s,k,d) were not working. Then i realized that the entire function keys row wasn't working either. Upon closer investigation I realized that this was because of the fn key always being depressed(not physically). So I went to the BIOS and swapped the control and the fn key. After a reboot I found that all my keys are working, but the fn key(which is now mapped to the ctrl key) isn't. Is there any fix to this? It seems weird that the function key is always depressed when mapped to fn but doesn't work at all when mapped to ctrl. It's been only a week since my warranty expired and I'm hoping to avoid replacing the hardware. Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Back in summer I purchased a Thinkpad E550 from Lenovo spanish online shop, still today I don't have what I paid for. Before purchase, I tried confirming the availability of the TPM in the E550 models, after few calls, the only thing I was told is that if website says it has, it definetly has it. So I go on and purchase. On 07-09-2015 I receive confirmation for my purchase via email with all the details including TPM.Laptop was delivered with no TPM (not sure if any other component could be wrong, as I didn't investigate further). After several calls and effort, finally someone accepted that there was an error from Lenovo side and offered a replacement for another model, as E550 has no option of TPM or security chip (be careful when purchasing online using their configurator). They offered me a L540 model as replacement. I cannot consider this model because I don't like its touchpad configuration. I have been using thinkpad machines since IBM and its middle pointer mouse is one of the best features when accompanied by the button on top of touchpad. Anyway, the L540 model was worth around 300eur over the price that I paid for. I believe that that was their target of compensation and I went online and choose a model of the Yoga that was exactly 300 eur difference. They simply said no with no reason. They escalated the case and for my surprise, they accept a yoga as compensation, but they don't accept the configuration that I proposed, in stead they ... Read more

Hi, I have SEVERAL E550 Thinkpads and none of them will play dvds correctly. Some will play SOME dvds but not all. Some won't play any without using an external dvd drive. All have Windows 10 and pretty much the same software installed. They ALL say "DVD Copy Protect: Fail" What's going on? I'm NOT copying them or trying to copy them and they're NOT copied dvds I'm trying to play. (Although, incidentally, I did try ONE copied dvd on one of the machines that wouldn't play any original dvd and it played the copied dvd perfectly!) Is this a defect with the machines or is it a software issue? I think it's strange this comes to light on several machines all at the same time. Please help! Thanks.

I am using a Thinkpad E550 laptop with 3.0 Ultra Dock. Currently I have my 4K monitor hooked up with Displayport into the Ultra Dock and am only able to reach 4K resolution with 30 hz refresh rate. Unfortunately due to this, there is a lot of "choppyness" in the display, mouse movements, etc. Ideally i need the refresh rate to be at least 60 Hz. Is there a known possibility to get these settings with the current equipment? It seems DP is only capable of outputting 60 Hz refresh rate but the Laptop doesnt have a DP port. I can only get that through the dock. HDMI doesn't seem to do the trick either.

Hi everyone,A few days ago, my ThinkPad went out of battery. I left it plugged to charge it, but could not start it any more in battery mode. When plugged, my laptop works properly, except for the battery which is "plugged in, not charging".I have tried many tips suggested on forums, including removing the battery, starting with and without the battery, updating the whole Lenovo software suite. I could not install any new version of the Battery Manager, since none is available for the E550.Has anyone encountered this problem? Anything to suggest?Cheers,Ben

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad E550 running Windows 10 having been updated automatically from Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (initial and anniversary).  I cannot get Skype to use the integrated webcam. That is not the issue. Discussions of that said to make sure the video drivers were up-to-date. There have been no non-automatic updates of Lenovo software since its purchase in early 2015. I used Lenovo's utility to identify the system as 20DFCTO1WW. Just about everything looks out of date, so much so I wonder if I am looking at the drivers for the right system though it agrees with the solution center's showing of model and serial number. I am familiar with computers, byut I am not familiar with how Lenovo does things. Multiple questions: 1) The current drivers for the integrated camera are RealTek 6.2.9200.10282 (7/11/2014), but the Lenovo site shows version 6.5.717 (6/19/2016 for Liteon) and Version 10.0.10240.11135 (Bison/Chicony). Is this the same device.2) Is there a suggested sequence for applying multiple updates?3) The Lenovo page has an option "Let Lenovo update your system". Is this safe? Thanks

I have a ThinkPad E550 laptop connected to two Acer V246HL monitors via a ThinkPad OneLink Pro dock. One monitor is connected via DVI/HDMI to the dock and the other connected either via VGA or DVI/HDMI directly into the laptop.  When both are connected via DVI/HDMI only one monitor will be detected. When one is connected via VGA both monitors are detected, however the one connected via VGA will flicker or blink off and on. Disconnecting the ThinkPad dock solves this issue. I have tried the following:Uninstalled and reinstalled graphics driversUpdated dock firmwareRun updates on graphics driversChecked different cablesChecked different monitorsChecked different dockChecked different laptopRun Lenovo VGA fix The Lenovo VGA fix would not complete and ended up in error loop. After advice from the internet I unplugged the dock and tried again, but failed. I then unplugged everything but the VGA cable and tried again, but failed. I unplugged all peripherals and tried again, but still failed. Errors include "Invalid AUX device" and"Enable Aux2 Reg Failed".Finally I redownloaded the fix, unblocked everything before unzipping then ran as Administrator, however it all still failed. Any other advice? I can run off battery for a while but not for a full working day.

A:Thinkpad TP E550 How to install Win7 32-bit instea...

The only way would be to buy a 32-bit copy, reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows from scratch. I am surprised that your 32-bit software will not run, since the 64-bit version of Windows was designed to run 32 and 64 bit software and, in fact, most Windows software is still 32-bit, since not many software manufacturers have have even re-written their software as 64-bit yet.       One the limitations of the 32-bit is that it can only see 4GB of memory (RAM) regardless of how much is installed, so if you are going to run Windows 10, you will probably find it a bit slow.   I have installed programs that were written for Windows 95 for people Windows 10 64-bit.   It requires a bit of tweaking to install and register the older .dll's etc, but it can be done.      What software are you running that cannot run on a 64-bit, and what errors are you getting when you try?   Are you trying to run a 16-bit software application perhaps, because in that case you would not be able to run it in a 64-bit OS environment, as 16-bit emulation was removed.     In that instance, running a virtual machine of a 32-bit version of Windows 7 on 64-bit Windows 10 pro using Microsoft's HyperV, VMWare Player or VirtualBox, would be the way to go.    Virtual machines are pretty cool, and are basically another copy of Windows, Linux or even DOS that runs in a Window of your 64-bit W... When I'm charging my Thinkpad E550 and I connect it to any external monitor with a VGA cable, the external monitor flickers constantly such that the external monitor cannot be used for any meaningful work. However, when I remove the charger, the constant flickering stops and the external monitor could be used though the screen still flickers/blinks for only about 4 seconds every 50 minutes or so. Disappointingly, using the laptop on battery all the time is not healthy for the laptop's battery but that's the choice I have if I need to use an external monitor. I have tried to use a 2-pronged adapter to plug the monitors into the mains but I still experience the flickering until I remove the charger. Does anyone have a solution? Thank you.

Purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e520 1143-cto from Lenovo in December, 2011 and now it won't power-up. I plug it in wall, press the power button and nothing. 1 year warranty expired December, 2012.

Can't be the power cord: 1) Tried a cord from another Thinkpad (R61i back in 2008 that's slow but still works) but still get no power, and 2) Edge's cord powers up R61i.

Price to fix probably beyond what the laptop's worth but thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks.

A:Solved: Thinkpad Edge won't power-up

Those models have a faulty EEPROM chip on the motherboard. However there is no recall on them so you will have to pay out of pocket to get it fixed. The cheapest and best way to get it fixed is to call Lenovo and buy an extended warranty for about $130(I think) and then use the newly purchased warranty to get a warranty claim to send it in. Turn around is one to two weeks and shipping is covered both ways. The only upside is that you then have a warranty again on the laptop for other possible issues.

Will be running 7 64 OS, with 4 gigs of RAM, and hopefully a 7200 rpm hd. Leaning towards the i5 processor.

The Thinkpad Edge is part of Lenovo's excellent T Series but somewhat less expensive. Looking at current configurations it seems it will deliver what I am looking for but I know nothing of the quality build.

Would love to hear back from people who have used this series and/or from ITs who repair laptops for their insights.

Hey guys, Had my Thinkpad Edge E450, for more than a year now. Never really had any problems with the keyboard. However, since yesterday, my keyboard has simply gone crazy on me. Right shift + c no longer registers, even though right shift + any other key still works. c works too along with c+ left shift. w+e keys, when pressed together doesn't register the e although both keys registers fine when pressed individually. Most weird of all is the fact that F4, associated with microphone no longer works either when FN is locked and when it isn't. However, every time I press the G key, the microphone activates/deactivates. I used the lenovo diagnostics tool and the keyboard passed the tests. Tried clean install windows 10 on the whole system and still the same result. Also tried uninstalling all drivers for keyboard in device manager and it still hasn't gotten any better. I didn't do any manual updates or anything that I know of which could affect the keyboard. Please help! That microphone popup is trying to hog my attention whenever I try to write a paper.

Hi, the USB 3.0 slots are not working on my E535, the lone USB 2.0 slot has always worked though. The 3.0 slots can charge a battery but no device is recognized, and no data can be exchanged on any of these slots. When I go to device manager, I can see two USB-Controllers with yellow exclamation marks and no drivers, apparently (Code 28). Attemps at fixing this: Installed the chipset drivers, USB filter drivers, and USB 3.0 drivers from the Lenovo website. When I try to install the USB 3.0 drivers, the catalyst program insists that everything is there and up to date. Didn't do anything. Uninstalled every USB controller in device manager, restarted computer to reinstall them, didn't do anything. Replaced possibly corrupt usbstor files and deleted INFCACHE.1. Didn't do anything.  I'm not finding any new answers, I really hope someone has an idea. Since the USB 2.0 slot is broken aswell now (hardware) I can't use external drives right now. Thanks so much for any help.

A:USB 3.0 slots not working on Thinkpad Edge E535

Going from a thread where a similar problem was discussed, I also tried removing upper and lower filters in the registry just now but they weren't there in the first place.

Hello everyone, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 and it was working fine until today. Today I worked on the laptop as usual and just turned off the Fast Startup setting in the Windows 8 and then restarted the computer. Now it only shows a black screen (LCD backlights are on but there is nothing on the screen). I hear the usual BIOS beep sound but I can't see the BIOS screen or the Windows. I've tried to connect to a an external monitor via HDMI. Amazingly, both my laptop's screen and external monitor works fine when the laptop is connected to the external screen. But when I disconnect them, again I can only see the black screen. I turned on the Fast Startup settings in Windows 8, but it didn't work. Then I loaded the default settings from the BIOS and it didn't worked too. Finally I've installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS to test if it is because of the operating system but it didn't help too. I've tried all of this using the laptop's screen while it was connected to the external screen. It is very confusing for me. It seems like the screen is only working when an external screen is also connected to the laptop. I would be very happy if anyone can help me about this problem.
