HP laptop, media player not working, HP support not working

Q: HP laptop, media player not working, HP support not working

Hi all,

I'm not too technically minded so I'll explain this as best I can and hope somebody can help me out.

A few weeks ago my media player stopped working - it flashes onto the screen for a split second and then disappears or just doesn't respond at all. Also the HP Advisor isn't working properly and keeps saying "an error ocurred" links don't work on the help section so I went to the HP site to try to get help there. I opened one of these instant help chat boxes and a technician  phoned me, said he could help etc mentioned a one off charge and it took me half an hour to find out how much etc. He had remote access to my laptop and was running scans that found several thousand problems and now I'm worried that he may have "planted" something in my pc. When I told him I couldn't pay what he was asking he finished the call pretty quick and left me to it.

How do I fix my problem and how do I found out if he left something malicious on my pc? I'm scared to do internet banking now :-(

Preferred Solution: HP laptop, media player not working, HP support not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Those are questions that you should be asking HP support, IMO.

As for what your problem with Media Player...what version is installed?...

I upgraded my cpu recently to a Q9400 Quad core cpu on a EVGA i680 SLI motherboard. I have Vista Ultimate x64 running on it with 2 TV tuners from ATI the ATI TV Wonder 600 and an internal digital card. Everything worked fine prior to the cpu upgrade. After the cpu upgrade (and firmware update to the motherboard). The Media Center crashes and does not recognize the TV tuners (although they apparently installed with no issues) and the Media Player also crashes if I try to do or play anything in it once opened. I have provided the following problem reports for the different crashes that i have seen. (FYI - I also have been running iTunes prior and after the crashes with no issues):

A:New CPU and Media Center and Media Player not working

Did you upgrade directly from a dual or single core?

Here's what it sounds like to me... I have experienced the same issue upgrading my dual core 5000+ to a Phenom 9650 recently. The main thing that is happening is that since you have upgraded from a dual core to a quad core, you've effectively added another processor to the system. Windows Media Center and Media Player both use certain codecs to de-code the video stream. By DEFAULT the codecs are designed to run basically very efficiently with 50% of the activity on each core, assuming you had a dual-core CPU. Now, swapping this to a Quad-Core confuses the application because it is still trying to allocate 50% of the activity to each core of the processor, but it cannot do so as there are now FOUR cores instead of TWO. So generally, I recommend you reinstall all of your codecs ( This solved the problem for me ) and download the latest Windows Updates. Now, since you also have more power going to your new Quad-Core, you may also want to do a capacitor reset. ( Unplug power-cable and press/hold power button down for 1 minute and 30 seconds ) and then reboot the system and let it power back up as normal. If this doesn't resolve your issue, unfortunatley the only thing left to do is to backup your data and do a Full Format/Reinstallation of Windows

-Good luck..

A:Windows media player is not working

hello

you may have some remnats left on your system

first do this

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to sliptream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Windo...p2-bootcd.html

now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps

--------------------------------------------

performing a (sfc) system file checker

It is a scan that checks the core files & dlls of the (os) operating system and replaces them if they are corrupt or missing with the correct original version

start

#1 then select (run) , then press enter
a window will open
#2 type in ( cmd ) then press enter
another window will open
#3 type in ( sfc )then press enter
another window will open
#4 type in (sfc /scannow ) then press enter ( notice the space between the (sfc & /)

now a scan will start , have your (Windows XP software disk ready ) your pc may ask for this disc when it starts or during the scan( so you must sit with the pc while this scan functions ) , if it does then incert t... Read more

A:Windows Media Player not working

The weirdest thing just happened.

I straightened out the problem I was having with the DVD writer and I burned a disk. I put the disk in the drive to check it and all of a sudden the latest version of Windows Media Player came up and asked if I wanted a custom or express install. Last thing I remember was that the download did not complete (three times)! I figured if it was asking for a custom or express install I wasn't going to let this gift get away. I hit express and a few "seconds" later I was watching My Cousin Vinny!

Maybe it did have something to do with the DVD Burning software after all.

A:VLSub is Not Working (VLC media player)

Hi - I am having the same problem - please help!
I am using Windows 10 PRO x64 and VLC 2.2.1

VLSub suddenly stopped working on Friday.
When calculating a hash -it just hangs, progress bar shows nothing. Eventually a close dialog comes up indicating that "VLSub is not responding. Kill it now?"
When I try to search for subs by name the same thing happens.

I uninstalled VLC 2.2.1 and reinstalled VLC 2.1.0 (and deleted preferences and cache, including %AppData%\vlc folder. (I didn't realize VLSub didn't work with VLC 2.1.x)
I enabled logging and got a log file indicating that the version was unsupported (VLC 2.1.x)

I repeated the process to re-install VLC 2.2.1 and delete preferences and cache.
I had the same problem with VLSub not responding.
Worse yet, I was unable to create a log file, no matter what I did - I enabled logging /verbosity 2 in preferences, created a log file name and save location (and ensured it was not write-protected). I am now completely stuck.

Please help.

I seldom use Windows Media Player as I prefer other alternatives. You can try to disable, then re-enable Windows Media Player and turn off software that depends on it to see if that resolves the problem by referring to this Microsoft article: Turn Windows features on or off. When I opened it last it made some changes. To be honest, I wasn't really paying attention. Now the program will not open. Whenever I click on the program, it just never opens. If I click on a video, an error pops up that says, "Server Execution Failed". I've tried some supposed fixes involving WinFix and msdt.exe. However, none of them worked. For the record, I got my laptop with everything pre-installed so I don't have a disc available.

Well, I think by doing this it deleted my Windows Media Player because it just stopped working. I don't even get error messages, it just won't work. I went to my Media Player icon and opened it and it directed me to the website to download, but when I downloaded version 11, it says I already have it installed at a newer version. When did the problems start, and had you done anything significant before it. If so, a System Restore might be in order.

I have used it twice since installation and haven't used it for quite sometime because I prefer using Winamp, Divx and Quicktime.

But out of curiousity today, I tried to run Windows Media Player 9 but no window pops up, no error, nothing. The cursor changes to the 'pointer with hourglass' for a few seconds before it returns to the 'pointer' and nothing happens.

Just wondering what is wrong. I don't like faulty programs.

EDIT: It also seems that everytime I try to load it, Norton would alert me about this particular virus . I did a full scan but no virus turned up.

A:Windows Media Player 9 is not working

First do a full system scan here http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

If it turns up clean then install WMP over top of the current installation from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx

If you get a warning about that there is a newer version installed, use this regfile

Hello,
I have been having trouble with my Windows Media Player 11 for Vista Home Basic x32 bit Service Pack 2, it freezes every time I open it & I cant close it even with Windows Task Manager. Its always on the library window stating that its looking for media files but I've left it like that for two days once & as soon as I open any other program or click on it it freezes, opening music files directly works only to play the file for a bit but the player is frozen the whole time. Ive tried many forums, contacted windows, & I cant find a solution to this problem please help, Thank you.

Having this problem for a while now. Everytime I install media player classic (any version), I use it for first time well for all media files, but after closing it and re-opening any media file (or the program itself), it shows a runtime error
"Microsoft visual c++ runtime library, R6002-floating point support not loaded".
Error is also shown in attachment. This problem is on all versions of windows xp. Currently im on windows xp sp3.

Hiya,

Windows Media Player 11, yes well right, enough said.

My honest opinion, for what it's worth, would be to roll back to Media Player 10 and enjoy.

Kind Regards,

Tony.

Hi, can anybody suggest why my Windows Media Player 11 won't work any more?
I keep getting the message 'cannot play this file' nine times out of ten, whereas everything worked fine before, and as far as I know I haven't altered my system or anything.
I tried re-installing WMP but the problem's still there.
I'm XP Home.
Thanks

My (college age) daughter has a Toshiba Satellite L505D that has suddenly developed a problem playing any CDs or DVDs. She is running Windows 7, has all current & available drivers, & the DVD/CD (combo) drive is functional. Doesn't matter which media player she uses, (Windows Media Player, Real Player, Toshiba DVD Player, VLC Media player) The dvd (or cd) loads, comes up in the chosen player, advances to maybe the menu screen (of the movie) or sometimes only to the FBI warning, etc. then freezes. In fact it then freezes the entire computer & after numerous tries in Task manager usually closes. Since it is not the drive or the media players, since it doesn't matter which media player is used is this a Windows 7 problem? What is the fix?

Thanks!

Sometime windows media player won't burn when trying to burn data (mp3). For instance I successfully burned audio data and then when I tried to burn a 2nd copy of same material I got error. I tried closing program and removing blank cd from burner and a number of other things but no burn. This happens often. Operating system is windows 8. Maybe there are settings I need to change? Can't use realplayer for data (mp3) unless I pay for those features which I'm not going to do. Any suggestions? I'm using desk top, no touchy feely screen.
Thanks, Marianne

I have a problem with my Windows media Player. When I try to watch a video on there is will either open Media Player and an error box (Wmplayer) with the basic "this program has preformed an illegal operation and will be shut down" message or will open it and bring up a dialog box saying "Cannot play back the video stream: no suitable decompresser can be found" with close and details. Does anyone know what has happened

Have you considered uninstalling it and reinstalling the latest version?

I would start there.

I have sound from IE; and all other places; other software etc.. It would seem that the only place sound not to come from, is Windows Media player. I have tried uninstalling and then re-installing - same thing!
In device mgr the only place I have a 'yellow dot against is my mouse, and Advance Power management Support.

When I try to run a file online with WMP doesn't work. When Itry to open a file this is what I GET:

Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding. When I click on details:

There is no sound card
Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000
This error indicates that you either do not have a sound card or it is functioning incorrectly. If you do not have a sound card, you must install one to play this file. If you do have a sound card, refer to its documentation to troubleshoot the problem.

OS win98
WMP ver 7.01

PII 300
392 mb RAM
16 bit 3d AD1816 sound card.

A:Windows media player NOT working!

try the newest version of Windows Media Player... you can download it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx

try that... what brand of computer do you have? if you have an emachine, dell, gateway, etc, (major brands) most of them have live troubleshooting support online or over the phone. did you also check to see if your sound driver is in with the devices in WMP? you can check by going to Tools ---> Options... ---> Devices. If it isnt there, then hit "Add" and follow the instructions

Hey all! It's me.. again. I downloaded WMP 11, and now, it doesn't seem to play online videos or music, like those from websites, or downloaded. It can play music from Limewire though. Ex. it can't play videos from here: http://www.geocities.com/avsbob/multimedia/0102A.html or those from my playlists.I can't seem to find the problem. I'm not "working offline", I tried downgrading and upgrading again and checked the FAQ from Microsoft. Is this happening to anyone else? Could my computer be infected?

A:Windows Media Player 11 Not Working Online

ALright, I think I found the problem. It's my adobe flash player, I can't download an update. I've got FP 8 or maybe an early 9 series, no idea.
Anyways, problem is, I can't download an update. I've done everything it says in Adobe's FAQ also, including uninstall my previous versions. (I downloaded an FP 8, then got a nine, but i don't see a difference, and can't play any videos on YouTUbe. Sucks.)

HELP HELP HELP!

Thanks!
