HP laptop, media player not working, HP support not working

Q: HP laptop, media player not working, HP support not working

Hi all,
I'm not too technically minded so I'll explain this as best I can and hope somebody can help me out.
A few weeks ago my media player stopped working - it flashes onto the screen for a split second and then disappears or just doesn't respond at all. Also the HP Advisor isn't working properly and keeps saying "an error ocurred" links don't work on the help section so I went to the HP site to try to get help there. I opened one of these instant help chat boxes and a technician  phoned me, said he could help etc mentioned a one off charge and it took me half an hour to find out how much etc. He had remote access to my laptop and was running scans that found several thousand problems and now I'm worried that he may have "planted" something in my pc. When I told him I couldn't pay what he was asking he finished the call pretty quick and left me to it.
How do I fix my problem and how do I found out if he left something malicious on my pc? I'm scared to do internet banking now :-(

Preferred Solution: HP laptop, media player not working, HP support not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: HP laptop, media player not working, HP support not working

Those are questions that you should be asking HP support, IMO.
As for what your problem with Media Player...what version is installed?...

I am so lost now I will try anything to get this (2 Week old) Keyboard to work...

I upgraded my cpu recently to a Q9400 Quad core cpu on a EVGA i680 SLI motherboard. I have Vista Ultimate x64 running on it with 2 TV tuners from ATI the ATI TV Wonder 600 and an internal digital card. Everything worked fine prior to the cpu upgrade. After the cpu upgrade (and firmware update to the motherboard). The Media Center crashes and does not recognize the TV tuners (although they apparently installed with no issues) and the Media Player also crashes if I try to do or play anything in it once opened. I have provided the following problem reports for the different crashes that i have seen. (FYI - I also have been running iTunes prior and after the crashes with no issues):

Did you upgrade directly from a dual or single core?

Here's what it sounds like to me... I have experienced the same issue upgrading my dual core 5000+ to a Phenom 9650 recently. The main thing that is happening is that since you have upgraded from a dual core to a quad core, you've effectively added another processor to the system. Windows Media Center and Media Player both use certain codecs to de-code the video stream. By DEFAULT the codecs are designed to run basically very efficiently with 50% of the activity on each core, assuming you had a dual-core CPU. Now, swapping this to a Quad-Core confuses the application because it is still trying to allocate 50% of the activity to each core of the processor, but it cannot do so as there are now FOUR cores instead of TWO. So generally, I recommend you reinstall all of your codecs ( This solved the problem for me ) and download the latest Windows Updates. Now, since you also have more power going to your new Quad-Core, you may also want to do a capacitor reset. ( Unplug power-cable and press/hold power button down for 1 minute and 30 seconds ) and then reboot the system and let it power back up as normal. If this doesn't resolve your issue, unfortunatley the only thing left to do is to backup your data and do a Full Format/Reinstallation of Windows

-Good luck..

I seldom use Windows Media Player as I prefer other alternatives. You can try to disable, then re-enable Windows Media Player and turn off software that depends on it to see if that resolves the problem by referring to this Microsoft article: Turn Windows features on or off. A quick fix is to install a different media player. If not I need the error you are getting when you try to open WMP (Windows Media Player)

I have used it twice since installation and haven't used it for quite sometime because I prefer using Winamp, Divx and Quicktime.

But out of curiousity today, I tried to run Windows Media Player 9 but no window pops up, no error, nothing. The cursor changes to the 'pointer with hourglass' for a few seconds before it returns to the 'pointer' and nothing happens.

Just wondering what is wrong. I don't like faulty programs.

EDIT: It also seems that everytime I try to load it, Norton would alert me about this particular virus . I did a full scan but no virus turned up.

A:Windows Media Player 9 is not working

First do a full system scan here http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

If it turns up clean then install WMP over top of the current installation from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx

If you get a warning about that there is a newer version installed, use this regfile

In device mgr the only place I have a 'yellow dot against is my mouse, and Advance Power management Support.

When I try to run a file online with WMP doesn't work. When Itry to open a file this is what I GET:

There is no sound card
Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000
This error indicates that you either do not have a sound card or it is functioning incorrectly. If you do not have a sound card, you must install one to play this file. If you do have a sound card, refer to its documentation to troubleshoot the problem.

Well, I think by doing this it deleted my Windows Media Player because it just stopped working. I don't even get error messages, it just won't work. The weirdest thing just happened.

I straightened out the problem I was having with the DVD writer and I burned a disk. I put the disk in the drive to check it and all of a sudden the latest version of Windows Media Player came up and asked if I wanted a custom or express install. Last thing I remember was that the download did not complete (three times)! I figured if it was asking for a custom or express install I wasn't going to let this gift get away. I hit express and a few "seconds" later I was watching My Cousin Vinny!

Maybe it did have something to do with the DVD Burning software after all.

My (college age) daughter has a Toshiba Satellite L505D that has suddenly developed a problem playing any CDs or DVDs. She is running Windows 7, has all current & available drivers, & the DVD/CD (combo) drive is functional. Doesn't matter which media player she uses, (Windows Media Player, Real Player, Toshiba DVD Player, VLC Media player) The dvd (or cd) loads, comes up in the chosen player, advances to maybe the menu screen (of the movie) or sometimes only to the FBI warning, etc. then freezes. In fact it then freezes the entire computer & after numerous tries in Task manager usually closes. Since it is not the drive or the media players, since it doesn't matter which media player is used is this a Windows 7 problem? What is the fix?

A:VLSub is Not Working (VLC media player)

Hi - I am having the same problem - please help!
I am using Windows 10 PRO x64 and VLC 2.2.1

VLSub suddenly stopped working on Friday.
When calculating a hash -it just hangs, progress bar shows nothing. Eventually a close dialog comes up indicating that "VLSub is not responding. Kill it now?"
When I try to search for subs by name the same thing happens.

I uninstalled VLC 2.2.1 and reinstalled VLC 2.1.0 (and deleted preferences and cache, including %AppData%\vlc folder. (I didn't realize VLSub didn't work with VLC 2.1.x)
I enabled logging and got a log file indicating that the version was unsupported (VLC 2.1.x)

I repeated the process to re-install VLC 2.2.1 and delete preferences and cache.
I had the same problem with VLSub not responding.
Worse yet, I was unable to create a log file, no matter what I did - I enabled logging /verbosity 2 in preferences, created a log file name and save location (and ensured it was not write-protected). I am now completely stuck.

Please help.

Hi everyone, my VLC Media Player has stopped working. I found YouTube video how to fix the problem and followed the steps carefully but it did not help.

My question is: do you know a real working problem solution for VLC, or can you recommend another nice Media Player that works with Windows 7?

I would much appreciate ANY help.
I have 6 GB RAM. 64 bit operating system My browser is Firefox (latest version).

P.S. If by miracle I find a solution myself I will post here on this thread.

WMP has worked until yesterday.
I went to start and and hit WMP and nothing happened.
No error message.
The icon or logo looks different to usual
The only change music wise is that I now have an iphone , but i dont actively use itunes , only to sync calender and photos.
it doesn't make sense that it should be that as I have had the iphone 1 2 months now.

WMP is still the default player in the control panel.

My windows player stopped working after I did a full scan using Mcafee. After I ran a full scan there was about 87 Potentially unwanted programs (PUP). After the scan I was asked if I wanted to do a cleanup and I chose to do that when I finished the media player wouldnt work. When I click on the icon it gives me an error message :: The application or DLL C:\windows\system32\wmp.dll is not a valid windows image. It then asks me if i want to download media player from the internet, i choose to do that and it still wont install i still get an error message. How can I fix that problem.

you may have some remnats left on your system

first do this

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to sliptream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps

performing a (sfc) system file checker

It is a scan that checks the core files & dlls of the (os) operating system and replaces them if they are corrupt or missing with the correct original version

#1 then select (run) , then press enter
a window will open
#2 type in ( cmd ) then press enter
another window will open
#3 type in ( sfc )then press enter
another window will open
#4 type in (sfc /scannow ) then press enter ( notice the space between the (sfc & /)

now a scan will start , have your (Windows XP software disk ready ) your pc may ask for this disc when it starts or during the scan( so you must sit with the pc while this scan functions ) , if it does then incert t... Read more

Which Operating System are you running, and which version of Windows Media Player is it?

When did the problems start, and had you done anything significant before it. If so, a System Restore might be in order.
