14" Laptop LCD with thin blue line?

Q: 14" Laptop LCD with thin blue line?

I have an HP Pavilion N5425 laptop, 14.1" LCD TFT (Toshiba) that works fine but 1 complaint:

About 1/4 way across the screen (from left to right) there is a thin blue line running from top to bottom.

It started very faintly but grew continually worse and is now a "permanent" feature.

The screen and laptop are fine otherwise, and I've been able to check all internal connections and and component seating. But the this hasn't corrected the problem.

I can replace any peice, but what part is it? Screen? Cable? Video Card?

When I change resolutions, the line stays in the exact same place on the screen.

When I unplug the cable from back of the screen (leaving the invertor connected) the screen remains on and show a plain white field with no blue line.

Using the video-out from the laptop, the line does not appear when hooked to a TVs video-in. (I do not have a proper monitor to try this with.)

Gently moving the cable seems to have no effect. But there is a good length of it held still under the power-button pcb when the laptop is re-assembled enough to turn it on.

Anyone have any experience like this and have an idea as to which part to replace? Any more suggestions to try?

Preferred Solution: 14" Laptop LCD with thin blue line?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

take it to a laptop repair shop or get a good technician on the job because it'll take tools and training to fix the problem (laptops are very tricky to mess with).

Hi Kerberg, Can you try the following troubleshooting steps to see if it's hardware/software issue: - Connect the notebook to an external monitor to see if the line appears on the external monitor. - Go into BIOS by tapping "F10" key during boot up and see if the line appears on your main display. If it doesn't occur in BIOS, the hardware is good. We will have to focus on video drivers- onboard and discrete card. If the line appears on the screen, please call 800-334-5144, say notebook and then zbook through the promot. Thank you, -Tenzin

It could possibly be due to a faulty data cable and at worst the screen itself. Only solution would be to have it serviced by a Lenovo technician as it is most likely hardware related.

Random Blue Thin/Dotted Lines on My HP Laptop Screen

I was recently transfering files to my new laptop, and uninstalling programs on my old laptop when I suddenly got thin blue lines randomly on my old screen in dark or black areas (see images). It is not in the same location on the screen depending on what I am viewing.

I hooked an external monitor to my laptop and the image is perfect. Another odd thing is when I screen capture the bluelines and view the image file on another PC, they do not show.

Any ideas?

I hooked up an external monitor and i've confirmed that it is only on the laptop screen. Is this a common problem and is this something that Dell can resolve immediately with  replacement or is this something that will have to be sent in for repairs?

I just removed the hdd from a laptop.(purchased SSD for the laptop.) I want to use the original hdd as storage.
I hooked it to an adapter and formatted the 1st partition, which had the OS.

I've always been successful doing this task, so I can't figure this one.

The drive,(disc 2) does not show in My Computer and when I used Easeus to format that partition, it said "failed."
When I launch HD Sentinel, it recognizes the drive as healthy and the temp,so I'm confused.

I tried to merge the partitions, also failed.

If I right click on either partition, there is no choice to make it active.

Do I have to format the complete drive?

I have backups of the music and video partition, but would like to avoid that choice if possible.

A:External hdd shows as "off line."I just removed this hdd from a laptop

I'm confused by the pictures. The drive is definitely showing up in Disk Manager as Drive 1, which is what it should do as the second drive.

Maybe I'm dense, but I don't see a problem other than the fact that the drive doesn't have drive letters assigned to it.

Edit: Duh! Wait! The first partition on drive 1 has to be a primary partition. Right now, both partitions are logical. That must be why they aren't being seen...

First off, I'm wondering if this is an issue related solely to my laptop, or if it might just be a Vista issue; I have a Toshiba P305D-S8995E laptop, and when I right-click the speaker icon in the system tray and select "recording devices", it only shows "Microphone" as an available option. I would like to have the option to record whatever audio is passing through the soundcard similar to the way I do it on my Win XP computers, therefore I assume I'm looking for some sort of "Line In" recording option. So is not having a "line in" option an issue with my laptop's soundcard, or is this a Vista issue? Thanks in advance for any help.

On my 3 year old laptop (HP dvEnvy7), a very thin line of black pixels has showed up. The first time it showed up was on the red background login screen, and I think tapping the monitor made it go away, but that might've been coincidence. I just noticed it again in the same place where the color of the screen is green. I was running an MBAM scan while that showed up and the line went away, again I don't know whether that was coincidence. I've read that this problem could be caused "by the traces going bad in the video cable going from the LCD the the main board" due to the laptop lid opening and closing. The lid is getting a bit loose. Is this the answer or could there be something more malicious, as my paranoia comes back to haunt me?

A:Thin black/dead vertical pixel line

If it's a single pixel width from edge to edge, it will almost certainly be a fault inside the LCD panel itself. Individual pixel drive signals are not carried on the LVDS cable connecting the panel to the mainboard, as that would require thousands of individual conductors. So a "hard fault" such as a complete black column or line is usually due to a bad connection in a heat bonded loom inside the panel, or an intermittent line or column driver IC which are also integrated into the bonded loom matrix inside the panel. Pressing or tapping the screen/frame can commonly make the symptom come and go in its early phases.
With that said, odd line-like faults can be a result of poor contact on the LVDS cable connector(s), and dismantling enough to gain access to this and cleaning the contacts with alcohol can solve it.

Hi there
If you are using an external TV type of monitor go into the menu of the Monitor -- usually via a remote controller etc. Somewhere in the Video / picture setups you should see an option like auto adjust picture / size or something like that -- then the image should fit the screen perfectly.

(Assuming of course that you have set the resolution (in the PC settings) of the monitor to one it can handle).

I hope I can make this sound sensible. Ever since I obtained a PC with Windows 7 Pro, I have had a very serious problem seeing details in the display window, even though I have turned off all the special effects, switched to a customized Aero display scheme, and so on. The biggest problem is the extremely high level of brightness on all Windows screens, both native Win and non-MS apps, along with a very extensive use of "ultra-thin" characters in fonts and faded, dimmed, or extremely low contrast on the screen text. Sometimes, it gets to a point where my (admittedly aged) eyes just cannot read what is on the screen, especially with the almost pathological fixation Windows has with using very light blue or other similar colors everywhere.

I have been able to compensate by reducing the brightness on my monitor to about 20% of the optimum default setting, using a custom CSS with IE, and by extensively modifying the display characteristics using the Advanced Window Color and Appearance settings, and by totally shutting off all the Win 7 "effects". Although that worked fairly well for the native Windows software and MS apps, and for some other non-MS apps, it still does not totally fill the bill for me. I still have to mostly use the high-contrast theme to comfortably do things like read my email etc.

If I could just completely rid my system of the ultra-thin fonts, I think I could get by good enough. (I should mention that I never had any problems with Win... Read more

I've always heard and read that a paper thin layer is best but since the paste is really only there to fill microscopic pits and imperfections, wouldn't merely smearing a tiny bit on with a platic bag around your finger be even better? Wouldn't this be closer to having true contact between the cpu and the heatsink? Paper thin almost seems too thick.

Also, are antec silver and arctic silver basically the same or is arctic better? I had some of both from my last upgrade a few years ago but i was only able to find the antec.

A:Thermal paste question: Is "paper thin" actually thicker than necessary?

Paper thin is fine, not to little, and not to much. I use, and most people would probably reccomend using artic silver.

Hey guys I purchased a new SAGER NP7358 and it came in yesterday. However I have been getting numerous "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE" blue screen of deaths at seemingly random times.
When I got the laptop I figured I would go direct to SAGER's website and download the newest Windows 8.1 drivers instead from the CD they provided. So I did all that and installed my programs like Chrome, Steam, Skype and Spotify. Shortly after the blue screens started to come up. I figured maybe restarting my PC or cleaning my registry would fix the problem. But it kept happening since last night to today at work.
I emailed the reseller and they told me to wipe my PC and install a clean Windows 8.1 copy while installing drivers from the CD and not SAGER's website. So started doing that and got all the drivers installed straight from the CD. And after 20 minutes of finishing installing driver I received the same blue screen... "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE".

Hello and thank you for reading my post.

I would like to start another "cmd.exe" console as "u2" and "as administrator".
(So, "u2" is not the current logged in user).

The following command:

u1 cmd.exe> runas /user:u2 "cmd.exe"
runs "cmd.exe" as "u2" but not "as administrator".

I would like to do this in command line. Can you tell me how?

Best regards.

u1 cmd.exe> means: I'm running "cmd.exe" as "u1".

A:Run "cmd.exe" as a given user and "as administrator" in command line

Hi Lea,

I don't believe that what you want to accomplish is possible. This is because Windows only "runs" one login at a time, unlike some true multi user operating systems, such as Linux.

If your logged in as U1, then you can only perform operations as U1, or as the Administrator. As far as running things as the Administrator is concerned, I believe in this case that you simply inherit the Administrators permission levels, thus permitting you to perform elevated activities.

If your U1 login has Administrator privileges then running as Administrator will be no different to running as U1!

Good luck

I couldn't get a good picture with my camera but it looks very similar to this picture http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/t/19434351.aspx however, it is just a little thicker on my screen. I am not sure if it was there since I bought the laptop however, I am pretty sure it wasn't. Could any one please tell me how to fix this or if this is normal on all laptops.
Any replies will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Had IBM Thinkpad 600E fixed under warranty for faulty screen (which had ceased to work) - problem turned out to be faulty motherboard, and motherboard was replaced.
Since getting the laptop back, there is a thin (about 4mm) vertical grey band down the entire screen which obliterates whatever is behind it. This line is about a cm in from the left hand side.
the band comes on from start up...ie through the black POST screen, and if operating in DOS - the same. The correct drivers and refresh rates, etc were already loaded. OS is Win98SE.
Wondering if it could be caused by something simple like a loose cable?
The reason I'm asking is that I'm in Sydney & have to send the laptop back to Melbourne to be fixed....if it is something that has happened in transit, there's no point sending it back to have the same thing happen again. Any ideas much appreciated.

That could be a physical flaw in the screen, but hopefully it's just a loosened connection in the wiring involved.

It probably did happen in transit, since the repair techs would have noticed and called you if they saw it.

You could have a local tech try to check the wiring first, but you'll probably have to send it to Melbourne again. If so, use a bigger box and ship it wrapped in something big and soft like a down-filled winter coat or quilt. You might also want to insure the parcel for the round trip if your postal system or courier company offers the option.

My sister just got a brand new Dell Desktop......she uses a dial-up connection with a local ISP and had no problems with her old computer. Dell tech support has been of little help although they came out and even tried to correct situation putting a new modem in. It came pre-installed with AOL 9.0 and I am wondering if that is the culprit.....something is running in the start up menu referencing AOL......I am ever so confused! It also came pre-installed with Earthlink but do not believe that is the problem. We uninstalled AOL leaving the cab files but still the same error message when trying to connect to the internet. Modem Helper and Hyper=Terminal also show the same error message. Have tried everything to no avail and could really use some help.

Thanks in advance!

SO i was restarting again it, until it could see my hdd for master.

BUt 2 days ago i changed the cable where i put in on mobo for my hdd to fix this.

And then i get this error minimal bash error.

MOBO has 4 slots of sata.

I have only win7 original. I dont have ubuntu or linux.

Hdd is 160 gb hdd with 3 drives.

after i got this, i put ubuntu live usb and i selected try ubuntu and when i was on that os, i could see my 3 drives. So there seems no problem for hdd as i guess.
