Solved: Switched from direct connection to wireless router, sharing no longer works

Q: Solved: Switched from direct connection to wireless router, sharing no longer works

I switched to a wireless Linksys router from a crossover cable connection, and now file/printer sharing on my XP + Vista network isn't working. They can ping each other by ip address (not by name), and I've turned off firewalls, and the XP machine can see the Vista machine but not vice versa. Does anyone have any idea what I can try here? Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone,

I apologize if this topic has already been covered but search results were far too broad.

Anyways, I have a 3 computer network with a Linksys Etherfast router. Suddenly this morning, none of the computers can connect to the internet. All of the computers can still communicate with each other through the network so the router is working in that respect.

If I unplug any computer from the router and into the modem by itself, it can connect to the internet, so the modem is working fine.

Could my router possibly be bad or is there something else I can check?

I would appreciate any help. I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to networking.

I share my Internet connection with my Win ME computer, but ever since I performed a full restore on my XP machine (home edition) the Internet connection sharing wont work. I can share folders & see both computers in workgroup computers, But no ICS. I’ve run the network wizard multiple times, and I can ping both computers. Before performing the full restore on my computer I had something called a gateway in my network connections folder. This is gone now; I don’t know what happened to it. Is this my problem, and if it is, how do I fix it?

A:Internet connection sharing no longer works

wo0d the gateway is an IP address and yes it's important, i don't know ME or XP, but somebody will be along that does. just hate to see new members not have their questions not responded to - stick around best help site i've found. now my set up is a little different 98SE and other strange devices but my DNS IP and my gateway IP are the same if you have DNS enabled and have an IP in there give it a go can hurt

I need a direct connection to the internet. A connection straight from the modem to the computer with no routers involved. I am able to connect to the internet using my router (wired, not wireless). However if I try to connect directly to the internet through the modem it doesn't work. I have a broadband connection, always running. I don't understand the problem. Why would connecting through a router work but a direct connection fail? I tried power cycling the modem about 10 times and it's not working. Yet it will connect through the router every time without fail. Is there some kind of configuration I need to change? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm running windows xp and my ISP is comcast.

My computer's operating system is a Windows Vista. Here's the main problem, my main computer (desktop computer) AND ONLY THAT ONE is the computer that cannot connect to the internet. And it is not wireless so I have to make a direct connection, yet it still doesn't work. When I make a direct connection with my laptop it works perfectly.

I'm not sure if this is it, but this person had a similar person. I am uncertain if it was exactly this problem: http://forums.techguy.org/networking/792642-solved-wireless-network-ok-direct.html

It was working perfectly yesterday, and when I returned a few minutes later it had an attention sign near the little computer screens on my Notification Area: (http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3360/46083525.jpg)
First place I checked was the Network and Sharing Center: (http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/2182/24275532.jpg) It pretty much gave me a similar picture to what the notification area's computer screens had told me. It requires attention? What exactly did that mean? By the way, my internet provider is comcast, I had given them a call and they mentioned that it may be something with my router. I called my router's company and they just said that it was probably an internet/network card.. I don't remember which. I tried to install windows 7 and after i did that the sound did not work, i was suggested by someone to reset my motherboard since neither my sound card (sound blaster audigy 2 zs) nor my on board sound card doesn't work. I did that, nothing happened except now it says primary and secondary master & slave cannot be found, I took a picture of it and uploaded it
Here

Windows xp will boot up but i am completely without sound, i have installed my sound cards driver and that does not work, the system does detect that my sound card is that but it just does not work, neither does my on board.

I believe it may be a motherboard problem so here is my motherboards stats

Hi guys,

a bunch of my friends are sharing an apartment which has a cable modem 'net connection this summer. One of the guys brought his wireless access point (Dlink DWL-1000AP) but as we've already found out, we can't share the cable modem connection wirelessly with it alone.

We realised we need a router so we're gonna buy one 2nd hand (looking at the 4 port Linksys one). My question is this : Do I use a "normal" cable to connect the router to the wireless access point, or do I need to use a "cross-over" cable.

Also, do I need to get anything else? Will the router+wireless access point function just like a wireless router?

thanks!

Shu

A:sharing 'net connection with wireless access point (NOT router)

The wireless point is enable users with wireless cards to make connection to the router "WITHOUT" a cable.

You are right in thinking a router is needed for several PCs to share an incoming line.

You can still make connection to the router to pick up the signal by a physical cable (RJ45). However if the router is in another room a wireless card is a much neater solution. The wireless card makes the connection to the wireless access point which you have already got now.

One more thing you need to know the transmission capability of the wireless access point. It should either be 802.11b or 802.11g. The latter is 5 times faster. The wireless cards should be compatible without saying.

Last week the wireless connection on my PC upstairs quit working. I have 2 PCs and 2 PS3s. One PC(my main one) and PS3 are downstairs in my "gaming room" with a wired connection to my router(Linksys WRT54GL). My other PC(connected with a linksys ethernet bridge in bedroom, used just for email really) and other PS3(in living room) had wireless connections.
Everything was perfectly fine for years, then last week the PC in my bedroom no longer would connect. At first I thought that the bridge went out due to it's age and I bought a usb wireless adaptor. That did not solve the problem. After investigating further with my limited knowledge I saw that the IP address assigned wasn't valid for internet use(196.168.255.2 or something to that effect). I manually changed to IP to one that would be in range(192.168.1.112) and it did not help.
The lights on the bridge seem correct(power, lan and wlan). I took the PC downstairs and it is able to connect with a wired connection. When I run ipconfig with a wired connection everything looks fine, but when I try with the bridge or adapter the IP is invalid. I tried to ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew but I get an error when trying to renew. I even ran a program called "Winsockxpfix" and it did not solve the problem either. I disabled the firewall and it did not solve the issue. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I went to a small office that has a DSL connection. It seems to be going through a router of some kind because they all have IP adresses with the first 3 octets being the same number. (e.g. 69.147.292.xxx). I hooked up a wireless router to one of the network connections and attached 3 pc's to it. Of course they now all have addresses like 192.168.2.xxx. Router is a Belkin 802.11g router.

Can I still share resources from the 192.168.2.xxx machines with the ones that have the 69.147.292.xxx addresses?

Thanks.

The cable is fine; all computers recognize when they are plugged/unplugged. Tried connecting cable to laptops but same problem. Tried all 4 porta in the back of the modem, same problem. Tried a solution to what sounded like a similar problem (Freddie_fly post here on TSGuy) (and todays Limited or No Connectivity post) but it didn't work (ie i changed the ethernet settings to 10 and 100 duplex). Tried to use a static IP address, also didn't work. Am thinking of climbing a tall tree with a rope...

Hi.wELCOME TO tsg

Let's start with the basics.

See if this gets us anywhere.
Then let's see the ipconfig /all
and pings.

Basic network setup procedure

From a Johnwill tech tip:

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.
• Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
• Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
• Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
• Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
• Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
• Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
• Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous command output!

I'm trying to help a friend connect her laptop directly to the cable modem. She already has it set up wirelessly through a Linksys BEFW11S4 router. Sometimes she wants to connect directly to the modem using the eithernet cable to bypass the router to eliminate the router as some possible connection problems. When the eithernet cable is pluged into the laptop there is no internet connection. Should I run the lan setup wizard? Does the cable modem need to be rebooted? She wants to be able to switch back and forth once in a while. Once it's setup will this be automatic or will she have to enable and disable the wireless and lan connections manualy? The lap top is a Dell Inspiron 600M running WinXP Pro.

If I run the setup wizard what should I look out for? Pleeeeease help. I'm lost

OK, I have a Belkin N1 wireless Router connected to a Billion Modem on ADSL here in Thailand. While away from home working my wife called to tell me the wireless network wasnt working after a power outage. I told her to unplug the Belkin and then reset the Modem and reconnect the Belkin. So far so good, Wireless now OK. I returned home and tried to connect from My home desktop which is direct connect to the Belkin. No joy,It seemed to connect once, then nothing. Not sure why as I was a little punchy after 30 hrs of flights to get home. So here we are next morning. All wireless hookups (3 laptops one desktop network printer and Wii) seem fine but the direct connection shows "Limited or no connectivity, network did not assign a network address to the computer".
I tried pinging 192.168.2.1 and no joy.
reset modem and Belkin again - same problem
On the Belkin the Wired and router lights are off, Security,Wireless Modem and Internet are lit up.
Not sure where to go from here.

Hi,
I have windows 7 Pro installed. I have a DSL connection that requires a username and password. I have read the tutorials for setting up ICS in windows 7, but it is not working for me. In my 'change adapter settings' page, I have 3 connections: LAN, Wireless and M 1 (this is the dial-up for the username and password). Here's what I have done:

I have enabled ICS for M 1, and created an ad-hoc wireless connection called 'M network'. I basically want to share my wired connection with my iPhone. Everything is ok as far as connecting my iPhone to M network, but when I try to use the internet, all i get is a 'connecting' message on my phone, and it doesnt go any further. I have used this network before to connect 'air mouse' on my phone that lets me use my phone as a touchpad. It still works fine that way, but I cant use internet.

I have even tried enabling the ICS on LAN instead, but got the same results.

Am I doing something wrong?

Hi,

I live in an apt. block and my neighbour had a request. Shes having major problems with her net access and requested if i could let her share my wireless access for the weekend. I trust her but how do i ensure there's no abuse of my 'net connection ? Can I restrict the type of sites she can log into or is there any s/w to monitor the kind of sites shes going into? I plan to disable file sharing that is currently enabled to share files with my desktop.
I have winxp, sp1; a linksys wrt54gs router and inbuilt wireless card.

Any other security issues I need to look into ?

Any and all advise welcome

Hello everyone. This is my first time dealing with networking and wireless adapters.
Computer 1 (Compaq Deskpro Win98SE) has Verizon DSL through a Westell 327W modem/router and wired ethernet card.
Computer 2 (Pavilion8590C Win98SE) has a Compusa(Realtek)#333618 54Mbps 802.11g wireless adapter.
The DSL works great on the wired computer. I get a strong signal on the wireless, but when I try to access the internet, no luck.
I went into the modem setup(192.168.1.1) and disabled security for now, enabled MAC Addressing and input the address of my wireless card. Now I can access the modem setup from the wireless card (some improvement) but still no internet.

Info from wireless card status page:

NDIS Driver Version : Not Available
Short Radio Header : Yes
Encryption : Disabled
Authenticate : Open
Channel Set : FCC
MAC Adress : 00:0E:2E:81:B5:24
Data Rate : 54 Mbps
Channel (Frequency) : 6 (2437 MHz

Status : Associated
SSID : ********
Network Type : Infrastructure
Power Save Mode : CAM
Associate AP MAC : 00:12:0E:17:4F:EA
Associated AP IP : (blank)

Under the General Tab :

IP Address : 192.168.1.102
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 192.168.1.1

In command prompt : ipconfig /all the same info as above with the addition of:
DHCP Enabled : Yes
DHCP Server : 192.168.1.1
Primary WINS Server : (blank)
Secondary WINS Server : (blank)

If there's any more information you need, please let me know. I'll be very grateful for any advice you can give.

hey,

Today i have a new problem with my adsl. The wireless was working at full 'advertised' speed last night, then today i noticed the wireless connection symbol in the task bar had changed from 54mbs to only 2 mbs, and a speedtest showed that it was a tenth of the speed it used to be.

Because i just installed my modem yesterday, i thought maybe this was just the isp limiting my connection until i register the modem or something. However, when i connect an ethernet cable between the modem and my computer, the connection works at full advertised speed. Does this rule out the possibility that my isp is limiting my signal, and suggest that the problem is with my wireless settings? Thanks for any help. The modem is a speedtouch 780.

Just had a random thought:
Can I share my high speed internet connection (albeit at a lower speed) via a direct cable connection (either paralell or 56k modem)? I have a parallel cable laying around from a old broken scanner and i also have a few modems that i could use as well (i'm trying to do this using existing parts (and without tying up the phone line)). Anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks for you help

I have a Presario M2000 with Windows XP. I have been using a Linksys WRT54G wireless router for three years with no problems. Recently a relative, unable to find the Encryption Key, "reset" the router. It still works fine but it is now an unsecured connection.

I tried to secure the connection by running the Linksys installation CD four times. I called Linksys and was informed that my service contract, which I did not know I had, had expired. If I paid them $39.99 they would walk me through a new installation that I could make secure.

I tried to check out their website, linsysbycisco.com, but it seems not to exist!

I had no idea that I would not be able to change the security settings of the router after a certain amount of time! Is there anything I can do, short of paying them $39.99, to make the wireless router connection secure?

(I am a new member and posted this question twice as I titiled my first inquiry with my user name...sorry!!!! ....wont do it again!)

A:Solved: Reset wireless router now can't secure the wireless connection!

That is a pretty common Linksys router and you should just be able to download the router manual from Linksys's website and go into the Web Interface of the router to setup the Wireless encryption again.

I have a Motorola Surfboard SB5120 Cable Modem hooked up to a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router Model WRT54GS and a Netgear Dual Speed Hub DS116.

Two days ago I noticed significant lag issues with the wireless internet on my Xbox 360 and I thought our unprotected WiFi might be getting stolen. I put a WPA on it and continued playing, and it seemed to have helped. However, my family and I noticed that our iPhones began to have problems with the WiFi; even after putting in the WPA password, the phones were unable to access the internet. First I tried messing with the DNS address on the WiFi settings on the iPhone, then I changed from WPA to WPA2, then I took off the password completely and the problem persisted. I reset the modem and router, unplugging and reconnecting everything countless times, still to no avail.

I'm using Windows 7 on my laptop, which I have directly connected to the router. The wireless signal is still in the air, and I can connect but I can't use it. None of these issues existed before I put the WPA password on the internet.

Here's the ipconfig /all from this computer.

Recently I purchased a new wireless N router, and have moved the older wireless G router downstairs, where I hope to be able bridge a connection between the two. Google results, ironically enough, have suggested Googling instructions on setting such a thing up.

Connected to this computer (which is upstairs) is the new one, a Belkin Wireless N model no. F5D8236-4 Version 1. Downstairs the the old Linksys Wireless G model no. WRT54GS Version 6. I have a friend who works a lot with networking, who is skeptical of the idea, but Googling it has returned hope that it is possible. The main dispute is how.

Here's the setup: This computer is wired to the Belkin router, which is wired into the modem and is also currently hosting the house's wireless network. The Linksys is downstairs wired only to my Xbox 360. My attempts at even trying to find where to configure these routers have proved pathetic, so I've been driven here.

Could this work, and will it work with these two routers? If so, how do I go about it?

I have a laptop running Win98 SE. I have a D-Link PCMCIA Ethernet card which works fine. When I switch to a D-Link AirPlus G PCMCIA card I can see the wireless network but I cannot connect to anything. The Link light is lit, Act light only goes on when running the D-Link utility to measure signal strength, etc. the link quality and signal strength are > 90%.

ipconfig shows a valid IP address but pinging anything I get "Destination host unreachable."

I tried the wireless card on a WinXP laptop and it works fine.

Any help/suggestions is appreciated.

Hi. I set up wireless lan broadcasting on my xp laptop; laptop cabled to router, smartphone wifi'd to laptop. I got it to work fine but now, even after undoing all the steps i went through to set up connection sharing, i can't get my laptop to connect to a wifi signal; i've tried three. LAN works fine but if i try wireless it will see the signal and try to connect but then give me an error "..unable to connect. wireless network may no longer be in range" I'm standing right next to it and my phone is connected to the same signal just fine. Is there any way to just reset all wireless settings to default? I tried cmd- netsh winsock reset (possibly different wording) and the command was successful but nothing useful happened after restart. If anyone can help that would be awesome.

Hello and Welcome to TSF!

Disable any Firewall/Security Software for now.

Try removing all wireless profiles stored in your computer and re-connect to your home wireless network, make sure that you have the correct encryption needed if your wireless is secured. Here's the guide.

If above suggestion didn't work can you pls. provide an ipconfig /all info of your computer? Here's the guide:
Click on Start => run and type cmd and press enter. From the command prompt screen, type the word ipconfig /all and press enter. Right click on the black screen choose Select All and Paste the results here.

Ok, for a while now I have been trying to get the Internet working on my old iMac. The iMac is an old 600 MHz PowerPC G3 running Max OS X 10.3.9. The iMac has a modem and a wired Ethernet card, but with it being so old I don't think I could even get an Airport card for it. The router, and my modem (using Comcast High speed), are in the living room, where my PS2 and Xbox 360 are wired to the router. My desktop and my laptop are both using wireless cards to connect to the router. My desktop and iMac are in my bedroom, which is probably 40ft away from my router, so running cables would be just absurd as I would pass the living room, the kitchen, and the front door, simply to get to my room. I have no place to put the iMac in the living room, so it has to stay in my bedroom. I can't move the router because my PS2 is connected to it and I don't really want to have to spend $99 dollars on a wireless adapter for my Xbox 360.

Now my goal is to use the wireless internet connection on my desktop and share it with the old iMac. It does not have to share printers, or share folders or anything like that, I simply just want it to be able to browse some websites and such. Here are the specs for everything involved. I have attempted to mess with ICS on my desktop and I have tried a few things, but I have no idea exactly what I am doing with that, so it obviously did not work.

A:Solved: Sharing a Wireless Internet Connection on a PC with an Old iMac

Connect the two computers with a cross-over cable. If you have no cross-over cable, you can connect each computer to the EZXS55Wv.2 switch.

If your router is using 192.168.0.x subnet you will need to change it (e.g., to 192.168.1.x).

Enable ICS on the wireless connection on the PC.

If you have a 3rd party firewall on it you'll need to configure it for the new LAN access (192.168.0.x).

The MAC will be assigned a dynamic IP configuration by the ICS feature of the PC.

I know nothing about the other computer, but if you do the above and show an ipconfig /all for the PC I can tell you if that should be working.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Here is my question, My roommate has a wireless network installed in the apartment we share. It is actually set up nicely, very rarely any problems getting on-line and browsing and such. The router is a Netgear WNDA 3700 and cable service is thru Comcast. I play a lot of on-line games and sometimes the connection will drop and I get a lot of lag and sometimes die (no fun). I was wondering if it is possible to run a Cat 5 cable from the back of the router straight to my computer, there is 1 connection available on the router, and If this is possible I want to make sure it won't interfere with him getting on the internet and doing whatever he does while I'm on-line. Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.

I have a three year old HP Laptop with Windows Vista home premium SP2, 3 GB RAM. Never used it with a wired connection, and had no connection problems with a wireless. Recently I had no wireless connection available and tried to connect to a wired connection. No success. Tried to get to the original driver for NVidia nforce network connection, and it worked! A few days ago, windows updates had an option to update this driver, and I updated it (while I was using wireless). I now have tried to connect to wired LAN, and no connection again! System restore has not helped. Device manager lists three network adapters: Broadcom 802.11 b/g WLAN, HP Netserver 10/100TX PCI LAN Adapter (with a yellow sign. no updates for the driver found), and NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller.

Grateful for any help in getting it connected with wired LAN.
