Windows XP - Very slow boot up/pc running slow [moved from Security]

Q: Windows XP - Very slow boot up/pc running slow [moved from Security]

Hi all...

This is my first post here, I hope you can help me with my problem. For about a week now my computer is taking about 2/3 minutes to boot up and it's generally running slower than normal.

I've removed anything Spybot & Ad-aware found, cleaned everything with with CCleaner. I've cleaned the registry with Registry Mechanic. I've removed any unwanted files and programmes, making about 25gb free.

The p.c is still running slow, please can you look at my hi-jackthis log.

Thanks

Preferred Solution: Windows XP - Very slow boot up/pc running slow [moved from Security]

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

When I joined school I was given an IBM thinkpad laptop, had no choice. Anyway I have Windows XP Professional in it and it is extremely slow during shut down and start up. It takes literally 15 minutes to do either. It takes so long while it is "preparing network connections" wether I am in a network or not. And it takes even longer "saving personal settings.....".
I have no idea why, any help would be appreciated, thank you.

A:SLOW windows XP pro (moved from Security)

Let's rule out the first possible problem.

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

Everything is very slow starting up, even just opening folders. I can hear the processor or harddrive constantly chugging.
Basic specs are:
HP workstation xw4100
P4 @3 GHz
3 GB of RAM

However the C drive is pretty small (30 gig or so). This is the office pc at my work. They have another drive but its a network drive...b/c I thought of moving the paging file to something other than the OS's drive but dont know if I should.

I noticed also that 3ds max is listed in the processes even when Max is not running(?!)
And 3ds crashes a lot. (version 9) Just now even I opened my file and it crashed right away. Dont know if this is related.

Hey everyone, this is my first time on a forum so please help me out.My laptop is one given to me by a friend who used it a lot for downloading music.I have no discs for it just the comp and power cable. There are a lot of things on it i would like to take off but do not know which ones i am to leave on.The comp is an (Acer Aspire 1362lc,AMD Sempron processor 2800+,40gb hdd dvd/cdrw combo drive,256mb ddr ram).Recently the computer is running really slowly and freezing then saying virtual memory low.I tried to free up some space but a lot of the deleted stuff seem to remain or at least there is some reference to them still in the registry or add/remove software FOR EXAMPLE IPOD FOR WINDOWS SHOULD BE REMOVED BUT POPPED BACK AND CANNOT UNINSTAL NOW.
I did a registry defrag didnt help, there was bearshare, itunes and ipod stuff on here and they seem buried somehow.Iv been looking round for all kinds of anti virus software and after wasting 35euros on regcure im ready to buy new and tinker with this first to get more knowledge about pcs.
The comp has the free avg installed which does not seem great and to be honest i am very sceptic about free things, lets face it you dont get anything for free really.I believed the hype around regcure and it found all kinds of problems when i first ran it.I thought great its gonna work, but then my system ran even slowere and it was finding things everytime i ran it which made me sceptical. One of the things it found was MediaccK.exe which was in window... I'm coming here because I can't seem to find any help in any other forums.

This is the deal. About two weeks ago my video card died in the middle of booting up my system. I brought it in to a local repair place to get checked, and while they were booting it up with another video card, the system asked if I wanted to run system restore to fix startup problems. The repairman there ran it even though I told him not to. As a result, my Vista was reverted back to service pack 1 for some reason.

Anyway, I installed the new video card (an Nvidia GTS 450). I did all my research on whether or not my system could handle the card and it can. I have a 400W power supply and a motherboard that can handle it too. So I uninstalled all the previous Nvidia drivers with driver sweeper, cleaned my registry with Ccleaner and Auslogics registry cleaner, and installed the new drivers and chipset drivers.

Unfortunatley, after all that my computer is slogging for some reason. Programs are just running slow, specifically web browsers. Programs take up a ludicrous amount of CPU while booting up, and while running, things like internet explorer or firefox easily take up 25 percent CPU or more. Not to mention programs simply boot up slow too.

I've tried everything. I've uninstalled and reinstalled all these programs

Adobe Flash Player
Microsoft .Net framework
Microsoft C++ packages
Java

I've also upgraded to service pack 2 again and ran all the windows updates but it's just making my computer slowe... Read more

My computer seemed fine until recently when it became very slow. It coincides with moving in with my g/f so she probably screwed something up. Seems very slow, acts as if something else is running that i cannot see. It won't let me delete startup items, saying that i am not an administrator, when i am surely on the administrator login. Was not able to run the panda scan because IE would run but not go to another page, saying, "null" cannot be found. The only thing she did was download the new aim, or so she says. Please pardon her login name, she thought it was hilarious. I know mcafee sucks, but my father bought a subscription so i use it. I hope someone can help.

Hi I'm new! I'm not quite sure what exactly is wrong with my computer. It seems that every time I turn it on it gets slower and slower at loading stuff like say the "my documents". I'm pretty sure I haven't downloaded anything or if I did I wasn't aware it got downloaded. Also, I can't turn off the computer by going to "start" and clicking on the "turn off computer" icon because it freezes.

Hi! My daughter has a DELL Dimension DM051, P4 3.0GHz with 512 RAM. Heaven only knows what she does on it but it takes around 30 minutes to settle down after Windows boots up. In the meantime the hard drive churns away without apparently doing anything and any application works in super slo-mo. Browsing in either Firefox or IE is impossible because the pages take so long to appear. She has scanned with AVG and ZoneAlarm. I've also run Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (log attached) and SUPERAntiSpyware (curiously, I wasn't offered a log but I think it only found spyware cookies). I also run HiJack This (log attached). I know this thread is similar to others but they all differ in the cause of their problems and I don't know if this is the same problem as any of those. Any help much appreciated .

It seems my original post has disapeared into the ether!I'l try againI have recently been experiencing freeze ups and slow boot ups while both online and offline (ethernet cable unplugged from router)I originally look for help in another forum where various things were discussed with the result that I think I have excluded psu problems, but am not convinced of this, see last post here, where the full topic can also be viewed.I am running Win XP SP2 with 1gb ram and an AMD athlon 3700+ 2.19 Ghz processor. attached by USB are two external drives and printer all with there own power supply as well as a cannon scanner which draws power through the usb port. When the problems started I was running Kaspersky Internet Security which automatically updates virus defs and win patrol. Since then I have also installed Ad-Aware which is now running. I used to use Spyware Blaster which is still installed but not normaly used.Over the last week I have run two full scans with Kaspersky, two with Trend Housecall, two with Ad-aware and two with Spybot S&D. None of these scns showed anything nasty, just a ew cookies.Have also run chkdsk results of which are belowCleaning up minor inconsistencies on the driveCleaning up 1497 unused index entries from index $Sll of file 0x9Cleaning up 1497 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9Cleaning up 1497 unused security descriptors...........CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the master file table (MFT) bitmap... A:slow windows XP(slow booting and programme running)

The u torrent made your computer slow. Check your Task MAnager for extra processes(remember to see processes for all users),check your computer with reliable anti-malware programs and antispyware programs like spybot S&D,Malwarebytes'Anti-Malware,Ad-Aware,and your AV program. Try online scanners like kaspersky and f-secure. If nothing helps, scan your computer with HiJackThis(post log here somewhere,I can't handle HJT logs. And dont AnalyzeThis)and OTListit by OldTimer(like a better version of HJT) Then put the Extras.Txt also in the mix as an attachment if this forum allows txt attachments. I would suggest malware from p2p sharing made it slow. If that fixes it,stay clean. Never visit any pornographic websites or download anything(except AV programs) without an Antivirus program like Avast!,AVG ,F-Secure,Norton etc.

Okay, first off thanks for reading this, I am getting increasingly desparate to figure out how to salvage my data.

Okay, so I pack my computer into my car and drive it home from college, (might have gotten banged around a small amount between the seats), I unpack it and plug it all in, and extremely slow boot times, and it crashes upon trying to load windows.

This is with two raptor SATA drives in RAID 0.

I boot off my old IDE drive that had like a beta x64 windows copy on it and try to open up the raid drive, and it opens very slowly, I see the file structure, I can navigate, but slowly, some files can be pulled off, but the computer is freezing like every 2 seconds, and alot of the time the file transfer hangs. I have never had HD problems before so I run scan disk on it, it starts to find bad sectors and starts eating up the drive a bit, so I canceled that (later on searched and found out thats a mistake to do), so I plugged in each drive separately, and one of them passes all diagnostics tests fine, the other I ran hdd regenerator on the bad drive (and it found and started to fix bad sectors), and it is also running extremely slow with this drive plugged in, and it will never complete, I calculated out the time and it would take like 7 years to complete.

The harddrive vibrates and appears to be spinning and I do not hear any funny noises coming from the disk, also I ran memtest and that passed.

Now the money question is: what is wrong with this dri... Read more

A:RAID0, moved PC, wont boot, extremely slow, bad sectors! HELP!

The hard drive is going bad, the do die without smoke and noise sometimes You can throw the WD diagnostic utility at it if you like to be sure.

As for salvaging your data, you just have to copy the files that are still intact. If there aren't too many bad sectors, then it can be done in your lifetime Some other program than Windows Explorer is a good idea. I'd recommend FAR manager or the DOS copy commands that let you ignore bad sectors.

I have noticed lately that my computer seems to take an excessively long time to boot up completely - almost 5 minutes. Also when clicking on desktop icons, they seem to also take much longer to load. Windows Explorer (the folder and file management tool, not to be confused with the browser Internet Explorer) is agonizingly slow to rename and open folders and files, sometimes taking close to 2 minutes just to open a 56 KB file. I have done all the usual things like running a virus and spyware scans (I have AdAware, Spybot, Malwarebytes and ATFCleaner, CCleaner as well as my ISP's Computer Associates Antivirus, Firewall and Spyware protection installed), emptying temp files and recycle bin and defraging the hard drive and I've unchecked "Automatically search for Network folders and printers". I also did a chkdsk scan and a system restore to before when the problem started. Nothing seems to help the slow response, especially when working with folders and files through Windows Explorer. I have not downloaded or installed any programs recently (only AdAware, Spybot and CA updates), but I did have a new power supply and a new cable modem installed recently. Even the tech that installed the new power supply said he was concerned at how long it took for my computer to boot up, however he only repairs hardware and could offer no suggestions as to what the problem is. If it's any help in diagnosing my problem, my system is an HP Pavilion 750n with a 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 proce... Read more

Hello,

I would greatly appreciate any assistance, if possible. I have owned an Asus ux32a ultrabook for about 1.5 years. About a month ago, the computer froze, then BSOD, and then took forever to restart (after Windows engaged the Automatic Repair function). After that happened, the computer started taking forever to reboot, it won't properly awaken from sleep mode, and while in operation the Disk often appears to be at 100% (in the task manager). Also, any time I power down the computer (if it freezes) and restart, I will get another BSOD, with varying errors.

I was getting ready for exams, so I didn't have a chance to personally address the issues a month go. Now that I have some time over the holidays, I am hoping to implement a fix that can get my computer back and running again, hopefully for next semester.

Really, any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Would be nice to have my laptop back instead of relying on uni computers.

Other info:
1) I have avast virus scanner
2) I have downloaded all the latest asus drivers from their website

Hi againThis is really a continuation to a problem I had last year when I received help for removing trojans. I don't think I have any trojan problems back, but from that time, my laptop has been so slow. I thought it was caused by the anti-malware, anti-spyware, etc. that I had installed to get rid of the malware(trojans) at the time and it would be normal for all these programs to slow things down. However, this is getting worse. I believe this is the address to my previous thread as suggested that you might read what was done then: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...obdor&st=15Or you may have to regard this problem now as a new topic. Furthermore, taskbar items take almost 5 minutes to load, and my HP Wireless Assistant will not even load up for about 10 minutes after start up. This is quite devastating and annoying to me when trying to take care of business and type out a few research papers. I am wondering what I need to do to resolve this problem.

Hello,

My problem is the following: after a boot up, my laptop can find itself in two states, seemingly at random.
- runs fine: the laptop runs as it always did, no slowdown or anything.
- runs slowly: as the name implies, every program runs slowly, from Firefox to video games (offline, so it's not just an internet connection issue).
As far as I can tell, which state the computer will settle in is set at boot up or wake up from hibernation mode. I've never seen my laptop go from "runs fine" to "runs slowly" while I was using it, even after running all day long. Same way, if it's in the "runs slowly" state it's noticeable as soon as I launch any program just after boot up, and it doesn't get better or worse after using it all day .
Another symptom I noticed recently is that as soon as I launch a game while in the "runs fine" state, I can hear both the CPU fan (shortly) and GPU fan (continuously) kick up a few gears, which I take to mean both CPU and GPU are put to use. This has always been the laptop's behaviour, even before this problem appeared. However, when playing a game while in the "runs slowly" state, the CPU fan will remain quiet and the GPU fan will only go a bit faster from time to time before returning to quiet speed. It seems as if the whole computer gets lazy and don't want to put any effort.
I first took notice of this whole behaviour around the end of March/beginning of April of this year, though in retrospect the "runs slowly" state may have shown up on... Read more

I am having problems visiting facebook.com and imperiaonline.org; other websites seem to be running fine. CPU meter gadget shows that whenever I am trying to visit facebook.com, my CPU usage is above 85% and RAM usage is above 95%. Did a Kaspersky scan few days ago, found a clean result; found a $RECYCLE.BIN folder in my drive however, and deleted it. Searched the internet for anti-malware tool and found ComboFix, scanned with it, but couldn't understand what to do next. A feature at imperiaonline.org doesn't work too; the support team said it has to do something with my browser. Re-installed Chrome, tried Mozilla, saw no improvement.

What should I do now?

The details has been filled up in the form above. Attaching the last ComboFix log with this thread.

Update:
Facebook is getting crashed often. Can't open 'messages'. imperiaonline.org isn't running at all, keeps loading. Problem browsing

A:Windows XP Slow (moved from XP)

Hi Kurang and welcome to TSF !

Unless I'm mistaken there are several evidences of viruses/malwares in your log.

Our security analysts will want you to use another version of HijackThis and do several other steps before posting your log so please follow these instructions carefully :
http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...sting-log.html

Go through the whole 5 steps process and post your final Deckard's log in a new thread in the HijackThis section. The security techs will get back to you as soon as they'll have reviewed your log but please be patient as they are very busy.

Edit : I just noticed that a moderator (I think I caught a glimpse of Carsey) moved this thread in the HJT section. You can post your updates here instead of creating a new thread but please follow the 5 steps guide so that the analysts have the right informations from the start.

Thank you and God bless,

A:computer running extremely slow & security warning

Hello, Kim. Sorry for the dealy in replying, but we're terribly busy of late.

This is where to begin:

Please download HijackThis to your desktop - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\

Double click on HijackThis.exe to run the program.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

I have 2 questions actually

I noticed that people had hijack logs... how do I get my hijack log? because I know this may answer my question.

My computer seems to have a lot of background programs running. And when I go to the internet it is so much slower and some programs will just not run.

I just switched to CA security center because I did not like McAfee. Now... I am really frustrated...

Does anyone have any suggestions also on the best anti-virus program?

Thanks.

I hope I have posted this in the correct area, as this is my first posting. I have just installed Eset Smart Security 3.0.672.0. It found 6 problems, and I was happy about that. Sorry to say, that was this morning. Now my computer is running as slow as the proverbial "paint drying statement." Everything is slow. To make matters worse, I am on dial up, so it is even worse. Even when typing, it is delayed. What is the problem, and how can I fix it. Must confess, I am just a computer beginner, so go slow !

On another computer, I first downloaded MALWAREBYTES, RHKILL,and COMBOFIX (did not solve the problem) and later PC TOOLS SPYWARE DOCTOR to a flashdrive and installed on my computer in SAFE mode.Spyware Doctor found various infections and removed them and the SECURITY SUITES virus seemed to be gone. MOST subsequent scans have found no infections.I have repeatedly run chkdsk, defragged, removed all the programs I did not use regularly, scanned for registry errors (CC CLeaner) but my computer is running incredibly slowly: 10-15 minutes to boot up, opening EACH program takes anywhere from 3 - 15 minutes. Also i used hijackthis to nuke a couple processes associated with desktop security 2010.If anyone has any tips for getting the GMER scan to run so i can post that log, it would be very helpfull. Thanks for the help i really appreciate people taking the time to help out victims of maleware and such.

Hello.

Win XP Pro SP3
Pentium D CPU @ 3.00 GHz
1G ram

This machine is on a server-based network in a nonprofit. I am the "IT person" but frankly, I am not an IT professional... I'm in charge of it simply because I have some basic "do it yourself" skills!

The machine was running very slowly for the past week, with hangs that lasted from 30 seconds to a few minutes, but always did come back. Shut down was taking over 2 minutes; restart was taking nearly 5 minutes. Programs such as MS Word 2003 opened very slowly. Our employee who uses this didn't mention all this to me until...

During an MS auto update this past Wednesday, when XP rebooted to add 11 updates, the machine hung entirely. It took 6 hours before the first update was installed, then sat another 2 hours showing "2 of 11" and "do not turn off or restart your machine."

I contacted MS and after heehawing around for a while, the person said to go ahead and do a hard shut down. It rebooted, slightly faster, and did not hang again, so last night, I was able run Ccleaner, then Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes. No malware. The machine normally runs Vipre Enterprise (which will show as SBEAgent in the log below); the Vipre log for the past three days for the machine is clean.

I also scanned the disk for errors (none found) last night. And, I changed the page file size so that its virtual memory is now 2500 to 3048.

I then manually updated the remaining 9 OS up... Read more

Erm hi. Last night my PC was absolutely fine, and today it seems to be completely broken.

I turned the computer on today and received a "malware detected" message from Avast antivirus. I tried to move to chest/delete and the message kept popping up. I looked up NewDot malware on the internet (which is what Avast was detecting) and it said that NewDot prevents access to the internet, which seemed about right as i was having to use my laptop to access the internet as the time, because the other computer wasn't working properly. It said that i could get rid of it easily my going to Add/remove programs and uninstalling it, which i did.

After this i restarted the computer and the loading time was exceptionally slow, i thought it had frozen, but it was just taking 5-10minutes to load. When it finally did load i tried to access the internet through a number of different browsers, but none of them would load. I tried to open some other applications too, and they wouldn't load either. I went to msconfig and disabled the majority of my startup items, and then restarted the computer. Once again the loading time was slow, and no applications would start. I then tried to do a defrag, but the program didn't work. Then i tried system restore, and the application didn't load, i came back to the computer 5-10minutes later and it had loaded, but it came up with an error that said something along the lines of "system restore is unable to protect your computer, please restar... I don't know if there's an edit option on this site, but i couldnt find it.

Anyway, i've found a website dedicated to this newdot "foistware" as it is known: http://www.cexx.org/newnet.htm

It says that deleting the .dll will result in a broken internet connection. IT also mentions that sometimes uninstalling it will still leave errors in winsock.
This seems to be what has happened to me, so i'm going to try the LSP fix utility available for download on that site. The problem is that this laptop has no floppy disk drive, and i don't have a UBS storage device available.

I was just wondering, if and when i do repair the LSP problems, could that be what is causing my system to run slowly? I hope so.

Thanks again.

My daughter is home from university and has dumped her notebook PC on me complaining that it takes forever to run anything. It certainly does seem to have a problem and from past experience (which you guys sorted out for me) I think there maybe something infecting the machine and eating all the CPU capacity.

I have spent a little while with it doing the usual cleanups and it seemed to improve a bit but nothing like what it should be. The main problem is that It will take 10 mins or more to boot up, even with the internet security turned off. Also ages to shutdown. It does seem also that even when it's up and running you can look in the task manager and find it says CPU usage is way up even when nothing appears to be running. On the other hand I have also noticed that windows defender sometimes seems to start scanning without being prompted so that may explain some of it. Even if the CPU usage is not high the "physical memorey usage history" is usually 800+MB - but I'm not sure if this means anything. However after several boot ups tonight the machine is running and I can access programs without waiting ages for them to open.

We bought the machine 3 years ago. It is an Advent notebook PC and is running Vista Ultimate with service pack2. It has a gig of RAM. It has an Intel Core 2 CPU T5300 @1.7 GHz. I'm not sure how much technical information to provide.

why don't you post a hijack log ,maybe someone can spot your problem.
http://majorgeeks.com/Trend_Micro_HijackThis_d5554.html

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi erica316..

my initial thoughts are that the problem is malware related. Has the problem suddenly started or gradually gotten worse? Have you installed any new programs prior to the issues starting?

It would probably be wise to perform a full system scan to check for virus and spyware threats.

If things do not improve after that, I advise you to read the following thread:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html

It explains the 5 step procedure you need to take before posting a HijackThis log file so one of our analysts will be able to check your system for any infections.

I have a AMD Athlon 3800+ 2.4 ghz i think, with an Asus M2ne motherboard, a 120 gig hard drive with 20gigs free, and a gig of ram. I'm running windows XP. The problem I have is my computer, after booting with relatively good speed, slows down incredibly. It takes about 20 minutes for my computer to load up all it's startup programs and about 10 minutes to open most programs. Took more than 40 for Warcraft III to open, and didn't even finish opening, I just reset my computer in frustration. I've run Ad-aware scan, Spybot search and destroy, done a ram check and a few other micellaneous fixes and none of them have helped. Currently I'm doing a Norton Full System scan, and so far it's taken 18 hours and is still not complete. I defragged my drive only last week before these problems arose, as well as run a scan disk and clean up. I have no idea what the problem is and I'm nearing my wits end. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh also when slam alt ctrl del in frustration, it takes a couple minutes for the window to pop up, but when it does it shows Explorer.exe taking 95-99% of my processing power and 100% of my processing power being used.

Thanks in advanced, Tom.

First of all, thank you in advance for anyone responding to this post. I am very grateful for your help!

I have a Dell Latitude 200X machine running Windows XP. About a month ago, I got the Netsky P virus. Although I have an updated Norton Antivirus program running, and I was able to quarantine the virus, my machine has been VERY slow to boot up ever since then.

I have already downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster, and Ad-aware, and run them. After doing so, I get the Hijack This log posted below. Could someone please tell me what I should delete to get my machine to run faster? Thank you!
