Lenovo Z510 Shutdown issue

Q: Lenovo Z510 Shutdown issue

I bought a Lenovo Z510 a year ago with the following configuration... Operating SystemWindows 8.1 Pro with Media Center 64-bit (I got the laptop with Windows 8.0 and I installed 8.1 Pro myself).CPUIntel Core i7-4702MQ @ 2.20GHz 52 CHaswell 22nm TechnologyRAM8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28)MotherboardLENOVO VIUU4 (U3E1)GraphicsGeneric PnP Monitor ([email protected])Intel HD Graphics 4600 (Lenovo)2048MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M (Lenovo) 39 CStorage931GB Seagate ST1000LM014-SSHD-8GB (SATA) 40 COptical DrivesPLDS DVD-RW DU8A5SHAudioRealtek High Definition Audio The issue I am facing is that my laptop used to shutdown when the battery was charging . I would be working on something and the laptop would just switch off. The place where I bought it from replaced the charger once, the motherboard a second time and the third time they replaced the charger again at which point the problem seemed to have stopped. This was about 7 months ago in which time I haven't faced that problem again. Recently, I was playing a game on my laptop and the power was plugged in and the battery was charging from 15% and the laptop switched off. This happens whenever I run the game and the laptop is plugged in to power supply. However, if I run the game on just battery itself, I face no shutdown issues. Can anyone help me?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Have you ever checked the temperatures to see if that is the cause of the shutdown ? Use the free utility HWMonitor to see what the temperatures are when gaming with it plugged in and when gaming on battery only. The program comes in two versions. The first will install on your hard drive. The second is a compressed version that can be unzipped and then copied onto a flash drive for a portable version.

Here is a link to that free program......

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Since the laptop has been in use for 7 months, if you never blew out the dust from the fan and heat sink you might give that a try as well. Accumulated dust will increase temperatures and reduce the fan's performance. Just use short bursts of compressed air in the intake and exhaust vents several times. Avoid long blasts as they may damage the fan. Cans of compressed air can be purchased from any computer or electronics store.

I have a Lenovo Z510 laptop which turns off randomly while plugged in. It started intially only while playing games but then happened even while watching videos and browsing. Each time the interval got shorter and in the last stage it turned off the moment I inserted the charger pin. This never happens when its on battery so it not a overheating issue. I tried changing the charging adapter but it did not go away so I figured charger is not the problem. Then as a final solution got my Motherboard replaced and it went away but only for a month. Now even with a new mother board it randomly turns off while watching a video. Im really perplexed as to what could be the reason of such shutdowns. I really need to figure it out so it can replaced under warranty.

Hi vinayk23 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

There was a BIOS update for power issue on this model .
I would not however advise you to do it on your own since it may need constant ac connection and we do not want shutdowns to happen during the BIOS update as it may brick the pc .

I would rather have you call in tech support for assistance and back up your important files first for safe keep.

Hey everyone! I am writing here because everything else failed, and wanted some help before (and hopefully instead of) turning to service. I have a Lenovo Z510 with Gefore GT 740M video card, and an Intel 4400 HD integrated video card. When I use the 740M to play any game, my laptop just randomly shuts down, with a 'pop' sound (the sound comes from the laptop itself, not the speakers). With randomly I mean it sometimes takes an hour or two in-game, sometimes it's minutes. I have checked with AIDA64 and its definetly not an overheating issue, and I'm also using a cooling pad. It's probably not the CPU either, because that doesn't overheat while I'm using the laptop. Bear in mind that when I surf the net or watch movies, the problem doesn't occur at all, and when I use specifically the Intel 4400 HD, it doesn't happen either. I did try using my laptop without the power cord being attached to it, and no shutdowns whatsoever. I searched the interwebz all around and found some forum topics with the same issue mentioned in them. Lenovo Z510s just shutting down without any warning. No solution to them whatsoever, just the usual "return it to service blah blah blah". Some people said that their motherboard or HDD got replaced. However, I think my problem is with the GPU... while I play a game with the Intel chipset, and the power cord is attached, nothing happens, but when I change to the 740M the laptop shuts down in about usually 30-60 minutes maybe. Once again: this i... Read more

Seems like I?m not the only one with this problem and no answers as I can see in this post:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Z510-Battery-Issues/m-p/2248499#M138065 as you can see this post is marked as SOLVED but these is like 14 more pages after that which denies this post as a fix because it DOES NOT SOLVE the problem! Me and lots of other people have this battery issue, battery indicator shows 100% and stuck on that and after like 30 minutes is turns off without dropping 1%. My searches ended up here that I have to use the firmware update program that always say "there are no attached batteries that require a firmware update" so how about a real fix hah???

Hello guys, so I am here to address the same issue regarding about the battery problem occur on Lenovo z510. For those of you who are new to this problem or this is the first time, where this issue occurs please check out the following guide--->https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Z510-Battery-Issues/m-p/2248499#M138065        For the rest of us who are facing the same issue for the 2nd time, I have decided to write this post as I saw that there is many of us who have updated our battery firmware and we are still facing the same issue, plus Lenovo staff themselve have not update us on this issue yet. From here onwards, I am going to be addressing the issue based on my experience, so I had updated my firmware on March of 2016 when this problem occurs. After the update everything was working fine as usual until recently around this week or last week the same issue occurs again and again, which is quite devastating for me as I usually use my laptop for presentation.      I hope that Lenovo support team will be able to fix this issue as soon as possible, as I do use my laptop everyday, sometimes in an environment that does not have plug. Thank You. LnvBFU v00.65?

Hi,My laptop hangs when ever i try to shutdown/restart. it will display a black screen but the keypad lights and other lights stay on for longer than 10 mins (i hold the power button to hard shutdown, after a while). recently i have noticed that my fn keys keys keep reversing randomly (without me entering the bios) and when i do enter the bios it says that its on the correct setting.  I have no way of proving that these two issues are related besides the fact that the shutdown problem only occurs when the fn keys become reversed. any help would be appreciated,  thanks

Hello, I have ideapad y500 and  I've noticed that when ever I shut it off and power it back on the battery has drained. Its about 12% per night .. Its rly weird bcs i am not using "always on usb" or any others features. I think that it is HW bug or BIOS. I have noticed that when  i shut it down -> unplug the power cable then i remove and again attach the battery leave it for 12hours and there weren't any battery drain. So it only appears when i just unplug the power cable and leave it. I have read some topics(some ppl have the same problem) but i haven't find any solution. Is there any solution to solve this problem?? Bios version is the latest one.. I haven find any newest bios ver on your website.  Tomas

A:Lenovo Ideapad Y500 issue - battery drain (shutdown)

I'm assuming you have win 8. Try this:On the Windows 8 Start Screen, press CNTL + ALT + DEL.On the next screen select the Power icon located in the lower Right. When the options appear, press the SHIFT key and select "Restart". When the next screen appears, select "Turn off your PC". The unit will power down completely.See if you still have the battery draining.Note: Even if the unit is off, a little drain is expected to maintain the clock, etc.

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Z510. I got it around 3 years ago, and this year, I realized that it has been running quite slow, or slower than usual. Whenever I open a chrome tab, it would take around a minute to set it up and would lag a little when I open up multiple tabs.  This is the specs of my computer.http://tech.firstpost.com/product/laptops/ideapad-z510-59-387061-specification-348262.html So, I was wondering, if I were to add more ram to my computer, would it fix this problem? Would my computer speed up and will respond/act faster? I know that I have 4 GB DDR3 right now, 2 GB that is shared with the graphics card and my task manager says that I have only used 1 out of 4 slots. Does this mean that I have another 3 empty slots that can be filled with ram? Also, is there a maximum amount of ram my computer can handle? I have seen some people ask about it but have no idea about it. So, my real question, would it be possible to add 8 GB of ram? This means that I would have a total of 12 GB ram, and would most likely have 4GB, 4GB, 4GB of ram, 3 slots taken out of 4. If I have 4 slots. But if I have 2 slots, then could I add an 8GB ram, and would have 4GB and 8GB, still totaling up to 12GB?

A:Lenovo Z510! ABOUT RAM

Hi fwachee,

Welcome to the COmmunity Forums.

Yes you can add 8GB ram to your current 4GB for a total of 12 GB.

As per specification from your hardware manual (page 27):
 DDR3-1600/1333MHz SODIMM 2 (max 16 GB)

Two slot are physically available if you would open it up for confirmation as shown below.

This would definitely improve speed and memory utilization of your machine specially with multiple browser and virtual machine apps.

Hope this help answer your query.

Regards

Have you tried to update the BIOS yet?  If not, that would be a good place to start.  You can also try pulling the battery out while having the laptop plugged in and see if you get the same results.  If so please let us know.

Could anyone please inform me of the measurements of the RAM card I should get. I would  also gladly appreciate if someone could suggest a specific 4GB RAM card that would be compatible and would work nicely on my laptop. hi, until recently my fn keys would work as intended  - they would mute, increse volume etc. (i left them as default). but recently they reversed and f1 would be "f1". i checked other fourms and they said to go into bios, i did not change bios before this so how it changed by it self is still a mystery to me. When i entered the bios, it said that my hotkeys were already enabled, so i was confused as to why they were not working. i did a reset and it worked. Good. but today i started my pc again and my fn keys were reversed again!. and i did not touch the bios! tldr; my fn keys keey reversing automaticallyCan someone tell me whats going on? thanks

First of all I'm so sorry if someone already created a topic about this subject, I'm a Lenovo Z510 user and I would like to know which computer parts would be the best upgrade for my laptop. First of all I'm so unsatisfied about the cpu fan, it got cleaned for 3 times and still after 2 weeks of usage of computer it makes so much noise so I would like to know which cpu fan would be the best one instead of the regular one (the regular one is: SUNON MG60090V1-C170-S99), I would also like to know what SSD card (of course the best one which will fit lenovo z510) would be the best update for the HDD one I have on my laptop. Lastly which processor would be a good option for this laptop? (I'm using this laptop mostly for gaming (of course as much as it allows me hehe), so I hope you guys will recommend me computer parts which will help me to get a better gaming experience on z510 ) Thank you all in advance!

Hello,I am planning to upgrade RAM of my Lenovo Z510 (Model 20287, MTM: 59400189) from current 8GB to 16GB.  Product Overview  page is showing it has x2 DDR3 slots:   Standard memory:   DDR3-1600/1333MHz SODIMM 2 (max 16 GB) But, in ubuntu,  sudo lshw -class memory is showing it has 4 slots. Two filled with 4GB modules and other two are empty.  Using CPU-z in Windows, is showing nothing in SPD tab. (grayed screen)  Crucial System Scanner is showing it has only two RAM slots, both occupied by 4GB modules.  Now, I am confused. How many slots does this system actually has? I know one option is to open the panel and see it there. But, disassembly of this system is much complicated, so I don't want to take risk just for counting slots.  Can someone help me with actual number of memory slots this laptop has, so that I can plan upgrade accordingly.  Thanks.

Hello,

I noticed that many people have found solutions to their problems in these forums. I hope I get mine fixed too.

Well I bought a new laptop Lenovo Z510 with 16GB of RAM already and it seems that I am dealing with tons of problems. I got it back to warranty they changed the RAM and the situation seems to have improved significantly.

But even with that I still have faced several BSODs and a lot of problems in the event viewer plus to random crashes for some some apps like firefox.

I attached the files hoping that we get this one sorted.
Thank you very very much.

Hi, I've recently installed an OCZ Arc 100 SSD into my Z510 laptop via a SATA caddy that replaces the optical drive. The advertised sequential speed of the drive is around 480 MB/s read/write however AS SSD Benchmark is informing me that I am getting just under 250 MB/s in sequential read/write.  Getting precisely SATA II speeds seems like more than a coincidence, however I thought that my Z510 is SATA III compatible. Any ideas on what might be causing my SSD to be capping at SATA II speeds? I really need the drive to perform at full speed as I am using my laptop for (intensive disk streaming) audio production. Thanks,Alastair

Try placing the ssd in place of the hdd and test again.

It would be best if you can share the details of your machine using the MTM / machine number from the sticker or get it from here. Knowing the specifications of your machine and acknowledging your needs would help you approximate on how far you would like to upgrade things.

Hi all,  My z510 is a couple of years old now. Tonight it is refusing to charge and when it's attached to AC power the battery remains at 5%, while the icon looks like it's charging normally. I've restarted a few times and tried updating the battery firmware, but it was up to date already. I'm running the most recent version of Windows 10. Anybody know of a solution? Thanks!

Hi!2 years ago when I encountered the battery problem on my z510. I only learned about the solution only just last year, after a few months of the release of the said solution. Just a few days ago, it happened again. It started by showing that my battery is weak, then just yesterday, whenever I unplugged my laptop from its charged state, it will just automatically shutdown, just like what happened on my first encounter if the problem 2 years ago. I tried to use the solution, but what it shows is that the firmware of my battery is already updated. Is there any ways in which I could downgrade or uninstall the firmware? Or is there another solution for my problem? Thanks alot.

Hello,I made a clean format and deleted all partitions of disk (recovery include). I installed Windows 10 64bit but it opens very slowly.-I installed all dirvers compatible with win10 x64-I updated Windows-I have no unnecessarry program on startup.-I've converted the partition GPT to MBR and reinstalled win.-I reconverted the partition as GPT and reinstalled win.-I used Lenovo system softwares but there is no problem in my hardwares.-I reinstalled Windows 8.1 again to get back my old system -I tried "secure boot - disabled" on bios-I used uefi still having the same problem. I've read a lot of things for this problem such as power management drivers, ACPI drivers, vga direvers  but there is no solution for this.SSHD disks have flash memory and we install windows there to make it open quickly. I don't know how can we do it or can we choose it manually but I need a factory settings DVD or system image file. Thanks for your helps in advance.

EDIT NOTE : This post was move to the top of the page to assist Lenovo with an escalation. For all future post and comments, please continue posting in this thread. i have this issue too, but when i changed the option "intel virtual technology" to enabled in the bios configuration section, my laptop started at 3.2 ghz on battery, then i changed the power option from "high performance" to "power saving" mode, it was redused to 0.77, then i changed back to performance mode,it speeded up till max. it seamed problem was solved.  i am not sure what intel virtual technology is doing or related to this issue, but it's worked for me. i hope this helps. meh, after 3 restarts it's stuck at 0.77 again, i think we definetly need a bios update. Edit- After a quick search, i ve found that "intel virtual technology" doesn't related to this issue, and it' NOT THE SOLUTION.  problem still exists. Also, just fyi, some other brands of devices faced this issue over the inernet and all solved by bios update or board replacement.    EDIT NOTE : This post was move to the top of the page to assist Lenovo with an escalation. A:Re: Lenovo Z510 CPU stuck at 0.77GHz

Hi! The CPU (i3-4000M) in my Z510 sometimes stuck at 0.77GHz. It doesn't matter if I set the performance to maximum in Windows and in Lenovo Energy Manager. It usually happens when the notebook is unplugged from AC but sometimes it happens on AC too. And also it doesn't matter if the computer is cold booted, restarted or waked up from sleep\hibernation. I have read about a lot of similar cases (just google on "stuck 0.77GHz").I'm using Windows 8.1 x64, the drivers ar up-to-date and all of the updates are installed. We are talking about a wold-wide problem since it is exists in other notebooks too. (e.g.: Asus) Is there any (un)known problem with the new Haswell processors\chipsets?What is the solution?

Hello everyone, Where to start. So I started having issues with my Lenovo z510, about a month after the warrenty expired (go figure). At the time I thought the issue was the DC Jack, so I replaced it and it worked for awhile. Then the problem came back after awhile. Havn't replaced the jack again because it doesn't seem to be the issue anymore. Now to the issue. Right now when the computer is plugged in it doesn't charge. I'm running Parrot OS. I installed Windows 10 and downloaded the battery firmware, updated the bios to v40, made sure the airplane mode is off and conservative mode is off as well. I have also verified volts through both adapters (replacement and original). Now the computer doesn't charge when on. When I first plug it in it charges for about 30 seconds and then shuts off. When the computer is powered off the computer "charges" to a "full" charge according to the battery symbol. However, it displays the error that the battery may be faulty and that its at a 5% charge. I have ran linux tlp and verified its running in A/C mode. However the only thing I havn't done is replace the battery. But it doesn't seem like it would be the issue given everything I listed above. Here is the TLP breakdown, am I reading the battery being BAD correctly???? upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0  native-path:          BAT0  vendor:         ...
