Data DVDs OK, but movie DVDs not recognized

Q: Data DVDs OK, but movie DVDs not recognized

I have a Mashita 842s DVD-RAM superdrive in my Toshiba M400 notebook. I am running XP w/SP3. I don't recall whether or not in the past I've tried to play movie dvds on it using such as WinDVD and Windows Media Player 11. However, recently I've had the need to do so. Unfortunately, although data DVDs (both those I've burned myself and software discs) and audio cds can be read without a problem, movie dvds are not recognized as even being in the drive. The lack of recognition includes Windows Explorer, WinDVD and Windows Media Player. Because the other type of discs work fine, I'm assuming this a software or configuration problem. I've used both Windows and a third party utility and both say the driver(s) are the most recent. I would appreciate any and all assistance in diagnosing and correcting this problem. Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

So I tried using Ashampoo Move Shrink & Burn 3, which burnt the movie (2.5 hr movie when the DVD rom only held 2 hrs) to 2 discs, which worked really well - except it came with no sound. Tried everything to fix it, but to no avail.

DVD Flick is apparently capable of burning a movie to 2 DVDs, but I have no idea how - can't find any settings or anything anywhere.

If anyone knows how to burn a movie to 2 DVDs with sound, help would be much appreciated!!

Thanks,

You should able to burn a 2.5 hour movie on one disc with good quality, unless you have a really high end very large screen TV.

Problem: Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit does not recognize DVD VIDEO_TS folder on a movie DVD. In other words, Windows Media Center cannot play a Movie DVD. I see the VOB file is used by Window Media Center, but the BUP and IFO files are not seen. When I insert a movie DVD and try to play it, Windows Media Center says it cannot detect a video DVD into the drive. Also, when I open explorer and look at the DVD drive, it shows no disc it it, opens the DVD drive and asks me to insert a disc. It shows all other CD and DVD disc, and I can read and write data, photo files. They are all seen, just not the DVD movie DVDs. I can make movies from Windows Movie Maker and plays those okay. Here's what I've tried so far. Updating DVD driver, uninstalling DVD from Device manager and shutting down then disconnecting the drive from the motherboard. Waited 10 minutes, then reconnected the DVD drive and booted up. None of the above worked. My computer has a LG (HL-DT-ST-DVD-RAM SA-H55N ATA) Device, which reads/writes both DVDs and Cd's. My computer is 4 years old, but I've never tried to play a movie DVD in it before.

I was doing some converting of DVDs and was having some issues with the software loading one DVD. I walked away and it continued to try to load unsuccesfully. After restarting the computer it no longer reads either CDs or DVDs. I can hear some noise as the drive spins but that's it, never see the disks. No error messages.

The drive shows in My Computer and in Device Manager. I did uninstall it through DevManager and upon reboot drivers reinstalled.

In Event Viewer I see "CdRom0, has a bad block" corresponding to when I was having problems loading the DVD. Nothing since. Also see that error two other times going back two years. Tried Microsoft Fix It but it can't read any media inserted. Ran CheckDisk for the heck of it and nothing found. Also did a System Restore with no joy.

So is the burner bad? If the laser went bad it seems coincidental that it would be both CD and DVD as I understand there are two different lasers. I am not adverse to replacing the drive but am concerned there may be something else causing this. Thoughts?

A:CDs/DVDs not recognized, is the drive bad?

The easy way to confirm whether the problem is with the internal optical drive or elsewhere is to hook up an external optical drive and check if it works fine.

Sorry if duplicating; can't find "low tech" answer...
Our once-fine DVD/CD player is now not recognizing DVDs (under 'My Computer").

I used a Microsoft Help thread to 'fix' problem with CDs; they now are recognized & play (control panel, add new hdwr, sound vid game, eventually clearing the DMA check box). CDs play fine, but DVDs aren't.

There's no autorun for DVD player; I try to bring it up, it says "DVD player loading", then fritzes out with this msg in a window: "Another application is preventing DVD player". Once, it actually loaded, but then msg said display unabled(?). Most recently, am getting blue screens and reboot is very slow.

Another MS thread said possible virus? I ran Mcafee VirusScan, nothing shows. A very low technical answer is greatly appreciated.

My PC used to play movie DVD's with no problem. I recently tried to play a movie on it and it the audio and video is either very slow, jerky or misses parts of the movie. I think the problem started after I reformated my harddrive

I've used a program that indicated that I have the codec to read MPEG-2 files (the movie was encoded with MPEG2). Audio CD's work fine.

Any thoughts on why this problem is happening?

Thanks!

I have recently been experiencing trouble in burning/creating DVD-video discs from both video files and images (.iso).

OS: Windows XP Media Center 2002 w/ Service Pack 2
Software: Cyberlink Power2Go 4.20.2329
Windows Media Player 10.00.00.4036

I have in the past been able to create DVD-videos from either a video file (.mpeg, .wmv, .avi, etc.) or an .iso image without problems, however now I am apparently unable to. The disc is created without any error messages, yet when I attempt to play that disc in either the same PC or on a standard DVD player, it is not recognized. My PC will say its blank and autoplay will pop up with "Burn/Create Disc". If I explore the disc, it appears empty, yet I can see that the disc has been written on, from visually looking at it.

I first thought the problem was from updating to Windows Media Player 11, so I rolled back to Player 10, but the problem persists.

Any help would be appreciated.

When I insert a CD/DVD into the drive it isn't recognized, unless the disk was already in the drive at the point of starting up.

For example, if I'm installing a program on 2 disks and need to insert the second disk to continue with installation it always fails since it can't recognize the new disk. Or, if I'm playing a CD and then insert a DVD, I still see the details of the now-replaced disk instead of the new one.

Any ideas for what's happening?

Even with on-board video there should be an entry for it under "Display Adapters" in Device Manager - showing the actual name/manufacturer of the graphics chip.

If you have no such entry, you need to install the correct display driver, available from the Dell website for your region or country. Install only drivers from Dell, not from anywhere else. This is because Dell hardware requires custom-made drivers which are available only from them.

Last year after one of my external hard drives failed, I spent a good week backing up everything on my two computers to DVD, files ranging from Word Documents to video files. I tested each one after it was finished and they all worked fine.

Recently I've needed some of those backed up files and videos, so I've put the DVDs in my computer and tried to drag files off. However, Windows often interrupts me and says that the file is corrupt, or it won't copy, or "cyclic redundancy check". When I try to drag it to my (new) external hard drive, it tells me that "COM surrogate stopped working". I've tried at least 30 different DVDs on a number of computers (including a mac) and nothing helps. I've tried DVDs that I burned a few years back and they too have issues now. It's the same problem on both computers. They will play/open files straight from the DVD without problems, but it's the dragging off they don't like.

Computer 1: Desktop, Cicero, 5 years old, Windows XP. Burner/player is a bit on the fritz in that sometimes it won't physically open.
Computer 2: Laptop, Toshiba, 2 years old, Vista.
I used both computers for burning with different software.

The DVDs themselves: almost entirely Memorex, DVD-R.

Any advice on how to fix this would be super appreciated, or even an explanation, that way I can know what to do in the future Thanks!

Here's the scenario: I have two DVDs here which someone 'wrote' (or thought he did) with "Verify Written Data" turned off. Well, when I got there, I recognized the DVDs as being the same brand I had the same problem with several months back. The program would chug along as though it were writing data to the disk; but, when it went verify, it would fail.

It turned out the disk was actually blank. Looking at the bottom side of the disk, one could see that it looked like it had data on it; but, opening it in Windows Explorer showed a drive letter and an empty window.

I would like to hear some suggestions. I would especially like to hear from anyone who has used any of those data recovery programs I have heard and read about for CDs and DVDs.

By the way, I've tried the DVDs in two other readers with the same result. And, his writer does write readable disks on brands other than Verbatim.

A:DVD drive doesn't read data DVDs

How old is the DVD drive.
The most common failure item in a computer built in the past 10 years is the optical drive. The laser burns out, or the laser gets out of alignment, or the belt slips, or the drive wheel slips.
They generally last about a year, but if you use them a lot, they will fail after six months.
Luckily, they are very inexpensive nowadays. You can replace one from Wal-Mart, or Best Buy, or Target, or Circuit City, or the remaining CompUSA for about $$24 to $29 to $34 to $39. Four screws, and some cable exchanges, and you are done... if you can figger out how to get into the case.

Confusion.

What exactly is a "recovery DVD drive"?

I know what DVDs are. I know what DVD drives are.

You say "burn the data from the DVD drive". More confusion. A DVD drive doesn't hold data. DVDs do.

I recently replaced the hard drive in my 3 year old HP notebook. The original HD was an IBM Travelstar 20 gig and the new HD is an IBM Travelstar 40 gig. I am not sure if this is related to my problem but note it here just in case. After reloading my OS with factory provided restore discs as well as downloading other freeware such as hijack this and ad-aware se, my Sony CD-RW DVD combo drive will not read data or audio cds. It reads them as being blank cds and after the auto-run starts the box asking me what I would like to do with the inserted blank cd pops up. DVDs however play perfectly in the system. Obviously the drive was working when I reloaded my OS with the factory restore discs. I ran hijack this once after installing to establish an ignore list of installations on the restore that are not a regular part of my Windows XP Home but I have not deleted anything. I have upgraded the driver, un-installed and re-installed the drive, downloaded Windows updates (SP-1 and 2 and other patches) amongst other suggested solutions and have restored the computer back to when I first re-installed the OS all to no avail. The only thing I have not done is a complete reload of the OS. I have seen some solutions that speak about BIOS updates and configurations and HD partitions but they are in response to problems similar to mine but not exactly the same thing. I am reluctant to try those without more info. I am at this point thoroughly exasperated. I want to reload some picture and aud... Read more

A:cd dvd combo drive plays dvds but will not read audio or data cds

Well, here's what you can do to narrow it down to a software issue. You said the drive obviously was working when you reloaded your OS from the factory restore disks, which I have no dispute on. So how about rebooting with one of those disks in there again (the first one thats bootable), if it boots off of that again great, but be sure to cancel everything so it doesn't wipe your existing system.

Provided it boots from that your drive is still good, and it is something in Windows, something I can't think of right now though

Dear fellow techies!

From the last few days, I am facing a major problem while burning my data DVDs. Everytime, the burn process fails in the beginning (around 1%). I use Nero basically but have tried CDBurnerXp and default windows burning options.

I have also tried different optical medias but the problem persists. I have wasted a lots of DVDs now to this problem.

I am sharing the error report of the recent failed process when I was trying to burn certain AVI files on the DVD. I also faced problems when I tried burning my digicam pics and videos.
Please help me...

Notebook Computer

Software: MS-XP SP2 Media Player(s): MS-Media Player 10.00.00.3646
Power DVD Player

Media Used: DVD disk and video movie download (Cinemanow.com)

Issue: Video Display has slow update and loses frames on both DVDs and Video Movie downloaded files.

[1] The computer has always had this problem; this is not a new issue.

[2] I have tried adjusting the Display settings provide by XP with no measurable improvement.

[3] Sound is not affected and has good quality.

[4] When MS-Media Player is used and is minimized to the task bar (mini screen presentation) the Video Display quality improves, but is not acceptable.

[5] Only about half of Video Movie can be viewed. Image freezes and play button is enabled. When play is clicked, the Video Movie restarts from the beginning.

Does anyone have a suggestion, I am out of ideas.

A:Video Display has slow update and loses frames on both DVDs and Video Movie downloade

Wow, it just might be the ancient processor you have and the very small amount of Ram you have. Video really eats up resources and I think you dont have the power to run it without problems, The key here is that when you minimize your preview window in Media Player, you have less problems.

A:How to Copy a USB Recovery to DVDs/CDs, Or Recovery DVDs/C...

The problem with moving a flash drive contents to DVD might be that the contents of the flash drive is larger than the DVD capacity.  It might be better to be able to make the DVD's, if it still allows that.  Keep in mind, it normally only allows one copy to be made.

Can anyone tell me how I can tell if my Laptop DVD device will burn double-layer DVDs?

A:DVDs

Hello Frederick, and welcome to Vista Forums.

From the specs below, it shows that your DVD drive is DVD?RW (?R DL) / DVD-RAM - Fixed.

So, yes it supports burning up to 4X + or - R type dual layer DVDs.

I simply bent all mine in half and 90% of them shattered. You can also use a paper shredder that has a slot for CD/DVD/credit cards/etc.
